The present study investigated the effects of island isolation on songs of three species of Australian songbirds. The characteristics of songs recorded from mainland locations were compared with those recorded on Rottnest Island off the coast of Western Australia. In all three species, the characteristics of the island song patterns differed from those on the mainland. Each species exhibited a different kind of divergence on the island, including (1) differences in the structure of individual notes and syllables constituting songs; (2) differences in temporal patterns of song delivery; and (3) differences in the order of notes within songs. In two species, the island songs were less complex than mainland songs and this may be the consequence of a founder effect. In the third species, island songs were more elaborate and diverse, and this may be the consequence of sexual selection, although other explanations are plausible. For several of these populations, quantitative comparisons were made between samples collected 6–7 years apart. In two species, new recordings made in 2004 were compared with those made in 1998 and, in one species, recordings made in 1991 were compared with those made in 1998. Local environments can act as selective agents on some characteristics of birds’ songs, whereas other song traits may not reflect local genetic adaptation. Geographic variation in songs of two Australian bird species (red‐capped robins Petroica goodenovii, western gerygones Gerygone fusca) was studied to examine one component of the ‘habitat‐dependent selection’ hypothesis. This hypothesis suggests that: (1) the detailed spectral characteristics of male songs are an evolved response to local habitat conditions affecting signal propagation and detection and (2) parallel evolution of other fitness traits sets up the potential for assortative mating by female choice. To examine the first part of the hypothesis, I made comparisons among widespread mainland populations and an island population using two levels of analysis: a typological analysis of song morphology (phonology: notes, syllables, syntax, temporal pattern, repertoires) and a spectral analysis of acoustic characteristics of songs (mean frequency, Wiener entropy, frequency modulation) using an automated procedure of feature extraction (Sound Analysis Pro). Spectral analysis was also used to extract values of the same acoustic features from the background sound environment of each recorded population. The typological analysis revealed no differences among mainland populations of either species, but large differences between mainland songs and those on the island. In contrast, the spectral analysis revealed acoustic divergence among populations, both mainland and island. For both species, Wiener entropy of songs correlated negatively with that of the ambient sound environment, consistent with predictions of the habitat‐dependent selection hypothesis of environmental selection on signal design.  相似文献

Bird songs in island populations have often been reported to be simplified, in that island birds have a smaller number of song types and song-element types compared to mainland birds. However, there is less information on the characteristics of acoustic structure in island songs. I investigated song structure of one mainland and three island populations of Japanese bush warblers, Cettia diphone, and found that island songs had an acoustically simple structure. The frequency-modulated (FM) portions of the songs were shorter and had fewer frequency inflections in the insular populations than in the mainland population, while the number of FM notes, the frequency range of these notes, and the song repertoire sizes of males did not differ between the islands and the mainland. I also investigated whether the song complexity is related to sexual selection pressure using the degree of sexual size dimorphism as a proxy for the latter. The degree of dimorphism in body mass was larger on the mainland. Thus, weakened sexual selection on islands is a possible factor in the formation of simple songs. Further studies related to male–male competition and female choice on islands are required.  相似文献

Song complexity and the repertoire of the bush warbler Cettia diphone were studied in an island and a mainland population in Japan. The song complexity (number of modulations in a song) was lower in the island population than in the mainland one. On the other hand, the repertoire size (number of song types per male) was larger on the island. Founder effect probably does not influence the island song because colonization occurred a very long time ago. Sound transmission properties of the habitat and weak selection pressure for interspecific identification might have influenced the island song, but these cannot elucidate the simpler song on the island. There is a possibility that social conditions affect song complexity in the populations; the highly polygynous mating system of the mainland population yields strong selection pressure toward complex song through acquisition of mates and/or establishment of quality territories. Territories of the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) and great tit (Parus major) overlap on the mainland of Scotland but are mutually exclusive on adjacent islands. Birds on the mainland responded only to playbacks of conspecific song. On the island both species responded to conspecific song and non-conspecific song, but not to the song of the willow warbler. On the island, great tits responded significantly more strongly to songs than did the chaffinches. When chaffinches were removed from part of the island woodland, great tits rapidly expanded into the vacated areas. It is suggested that on the island there is a limit to the co-existence of these two species because they forage in a similar manner and that this has resulted in interspecific territoriality, not seen on the richer mainland environment.  相似文献

Islands are simplified, isolated ecosystems, providing an ideal set‐up to study evolution. Among several traits that are expected to change on islands, an interesting but poorly understood example concerns signals used in animal communication. Islands are typified by reduced species diversity, increased population density, and reduced mate competition, all of which could affect communication signals. We used birdsong to investigate whether there are systematic changes in communication signals on islands, by undertaking a broad comparison based on pairs of closely related island‐mainland species across the globe. We studied song traits related to complexity (number of different syllables, frequency bandwidth), to vocal performance (syllable delivery rate, song duration), and also three particular song elements (rattles, buzzes, and trills) generally implicated in aggressive communication. We also investigated whether song complexity was related to the number of similar sympatric species. We found that island species were less likely to produce broadband and likely aggressive song elements (rattles and buzzes). By contrast, various aspects of song complexity and performance did not differ between island and mainland species. Species with fewer same‐family sympatric species used wider frequency bandwidths, as predicted by the character release hypothesis, both on continents and on islands. Our study supports the hypothesis of a reduction in aggressive behavior on islands and suggests that discrimination against closely related species is an important factor influencing birdsong evolution.  相似文献

For conservation purposes islands are considered safe refuges for many species, particularly in regions where introduced predators form a major threat to the native fauna, but island populations are also known to possess low levels of genetic diversity. The New Zealand archipelago provides an ideal system to compare genetic diversity of large mainland populations where introduced predators are common, to that of smaller offshore islands, which serve as predator-free refuges. We assessed microsatellite variation in South Island robins (Petroica australis australis), and compared large mainland, small mainland, natural island and translocated island populations. Large mainland populations exhibited more polymorphic loci and higher number of alleles than small mainland and natural island populations. Genetic variation did not differ between natural and translocated island populations, even though one of the translocated populations was established with five individuals. Hatching failure was recorded in a subset of the populations and found to be significantly higher in translocated populations than in a large mainland population. Significant population differentiation was largely based on heterogeneity in allele frequencies (including fixation of alleles), as few unique alleles were observed. This study shows that large mainland populations retain higher levels of genetic diversity than natural and translocated island populations. It highlights the importance of protecting these mainland populations and using them as a source for new translocations. In the future, these populations may become extremely valuable for species conservation if existing island populations become adversely affected by low levels of genetic variation and do not persist.  相似文献

Detailed estimations of habitat structure, plant species diversity and diversity of arthropods were made at six 4.0 ha sites, two on mainland Western Australia near Perth and four on adjacent islands. The number of resident passerine bird species was also recorded at each site. Plant species diversity, and horizontal foliage diversity (=patchiness) varied only slightly between sites. There were significant positive correlations between arthropod Order diversity and bird diversity, and between vertical foliage diversity and bird diversity. In both Acacia and dune scrub, the Rottnest Island sites had more individuals of arthropods than the mainland sites but these belonged to fewer Orders. Numerical imbalance between arthropod Orders on Rottnest Island probably results from diminution of predators (passerine birds) there. As the actual number of arthropods is higher on the islands, the absence of so many species of passerine birds may result from other factors (ecological and historical).  相似文献

Reduced vocal diversity in founder populations of songbirds is particularly well described in congeners and conspecifics introduced to remote islands but has rarely been examined in species that have been introduced to both island and mainland systems across an expansive geographical range. We examined male between‐ and within‐song complexity variations between founder and native populations of the widely distributed Common Myna Acridotheres tristis and predicted reduced complexity within individuals from founder populations. The percentage of unique songs within a repertoire and within‐song complexity were significantly lower in Mynas from founder populations. This reduced song complexity suggests that vocal founder effects may be exhibited in both island and mainland founder populations.  相似文献

The courtship song of Drosophila is useful for species recognition and sexual selection. A new species of the melanogaster group of Drosophila , D. santomea , has recently been described from the island of São Tomé in the Gulf of Guinea. We describe the courtship song of D. santomea and compare it with that of its sibling species D. yakuba . Both species have a relatively unusual song pattern for melanogaster-group species, in that they have two types of pulse song but no sine song. There are large differences in the inter-pulse interval of both types of song, but no major differences in pulse shape or intrapulse frequency between the species. The song of D. yakuba is similar in lines from the African mainland (allopatric to D. santomea ) and from São Tomé (sympatric). We test if song pattern might influence sexual isolation by examining the mating success of wingless males with homo- and hetero-specific females. We show that song pattern contributes to sexual stimulation, but the differences in song patterns alone are unlikely to explain patterns of sexual isolation such as the asymmetrical isolation seen between species.  相似文献

Abstract.— Bird song is a sexual trait important in mate choice and known to be shaped by environmental selection. Here we investigate the ecological factors shaping song variation across a rainforest gradient in central Africa. We show that the little greenbul ( Andropadus virens ), previously shown to vary morphologically across the gradient in fitness-related characters, also varies with respect to song characteristics. Acoustic features, including minimum and maximum frequency, and delivery rate of song notes showed significant differences between habitats. In contrast, we found dialectal variation independent of habitat in population-typical songtype sequences. This pattern is consistent with ongoing gene flow across habitats and in line with the view that song variation in the order in which songtypes are produced is not dependent on habitat characteristics in the same way physical song characteristics are. Sound transmission characteristics of the two habitats did not vary significantly, but analyses of ambient noise spectra revealed dramatic and consistent habitat-dependent differences. Matching between low ambient noise levels for low frequencies in the rainforest and lower minimal frequencies in greenbul songs in this habitat suggests that part of the song divergence may be driven by habitat-dependent ambient noise patterns. These results suggest that habitat-dependent selection may act simultaneously on traits of ecological importance and those important in prezygotic isolation, leading to an association between morphological and acoustic divergence. Such an association may promote assortative mating and may be a mechanism driving reproductive divergence across ecological gradients.  相似文献

Differences in song repertoires and characteristics of island and mainland populations of the same avian species are usually explained by dispersal, cultural evolution and/or habitat differences. The influence of morphology is often overlooked, even though island populations are frequently morphologically distinct from mainland populations, and morphology could affect vocalizations. I compared morphological features, songs, contact calls and alarm calls of six isolated island populations of silvereye Zosterops lateralis with those of two mainland populations to examine whether differences between mainland and island vocalizations were consistent across vocalization types, and whether these differences could be linked to morphological differences. Vocalizations were lower in frequency on islands. Island individuals were larger (both in mass and body structure), and body mass was an important predictor of frequency in contact and alarm calls. I argue that this strong association results from the island rule (islands promote larger body sizes) and cascading effects of morphology on vocalization frequency in this species.  相似文献

Differing selective pressures on islands versus the mainland may produce alternative evolutionary outcomes among closely related lineages. Conversely, lineages may be constrained to produce similar outcomes in different mainland and island environments, or mainland and island environments may not differ significantly. Among the best‐studied island radiations are Caribbean Anolis lizards. Distinct morphotypes, or ‘ecomorphs’, have been described, and the same ecomorphs have evolved independently on each Greater Antillean island. The mainland Anolis radiation has received much less attention. We use a large morphological data set and a novel phylogenetic hypothesis to show that mainland Anolis did not evolve the same morphotypes as island Anolis, despite some island species being more closely related to mainland species than to island species that share their morphotype. A maximum of four of the six Caribbean ecomorphs were found to exist on the mainland, and just 15 of 123 mainland species are assignable to a Caribbean ecomorph. This result was insensitive to differing taxon samples and alternative phylogenetic hypotheses. Mainland convergence to a Caribbean ecomorph occurs only among species assigned to the grass‐bush ecomorph. Thus, the ecomorphs that have evolved convergently multiple times in the Caribbean have not evolved in parallel on the mainland. Many animal populations that are endangered in mainland areas exist in stable island populations, which have the potential to act as an “ark” in case of mainland population declines. Previous studies have found neutral genetic variation in such species to be up to an order of magnitude lower in island compared to mainland populations. If low genetic variation is prevalent across fitness-related loci, this would reduce the effectiveness of island populations as a source of individuals to supplement declining mainland populations or re-establish extinct mainland populations. One such species, the black-footed rock-wallaby (Petrogale lateralis lateralis), exists within fragmented mainland populations and small island populations off Western Australia. We examined sequence variation in this species within a fitness-related locus under positive selection, the MHC class II DAB β1 locus. The mainland populations displayed greater levels of allelic diversity (4–7 alleles) than the island population, despite being small and isolated, and contained at least two DAB gene copies. The island population displayed low allelic diversity (2 alleles) and fewer alleles per individual in comparison to mainland populations, and probably possesses only one DAB gene copy. The patterns of DAB diversity suggested that the island population has a markedly lower level of genetic variation than the mainland populations, in concordance with results from microsatellites (genotyped in a previous study), but preserved unique alleles which were not found in mainland populations. Where possible, conservation actions should pool individuals from multiple populations, not only island populations, for translocation programs, and focus on preventing further declines in mainland populations.  相似文献

The song of many bird species is relatively constant in form, yet each bird has more than one song type, making it an excellent model for studies of the mechanisms underlying switching between behaviour patterns. The chaffinch is a good example. Males sing with eventual variety, repeating each song type in the repertoire a few times before switching to another type. The mechanism triggering these switches is not known. We investigated long continuous recordings of spontaneous singing by six wild males to test two hypotheses: (1) that a maximum number of repetitions limits bout length; or (2) that a switch occurs after a song type bout reaches a maximum duration ('time window'). Strong evidence was found for a temporal limitation: song type bouts with many repetitions were delivered only at a fast rate, whereas bouts consisting of few songs were delivered either fast or slow. This study addresses the issue of how evolutionary convergence within shared environments shapes some features of bird song while leaving others unaffected, using as an example the songs of 51 North American wood warblers (Parulinae). I combined published information on breeding habitats and evolutionary relationships to show that the structure of warbler songs is correlated with habitat, whereas the structure of the notes that comprise the songs is relatively unaffected by habitat and more closely related to phylogenetic history. The results confirm known relationships between bird song and habitat, including correlations between song frequency and the type and density of canopy foliage, and between the number and arrangement of notes in the song and foliage density and moisture. More importantly, the results suggest that individual notes and whole songs are to some extent functionally independent, because the configuration of notes shows more evidence of evolutionary constraint than does the way notes are assembled into songs.  相似文献

Two processes are thought to generate positive relationships between species richness and island area. The areaper se hypothesis states that larger islands maintain larger populations, which are less susceptible to extinction. The habitat hypothesis states that larger islands contain more habitats, and therefore a greater number of habitat specialists. However, the importance of each mechanism is debated. I tested the areaper se and habitat hypotheses by comparing relationships between plant abundance, age and island area in five shrub species on islands off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. Results showed that two shrub species increased in both abundance and age with island area. The remaining three species showed no differences in abundance and age with island area. Conifer abundances increased with island area, which generated differences in habitat availability. Smaller islands were dominated by open habitat, while larger islands contained both open and forested habitats. Changes in habitat availability with island area could explain patterns in plant abundance and age. The two species that increased in abundance with island area were commonly found in conifer forest on the mainland, and their distributions were consistent with the distribution forest habitat. Positive relationships between plant age and island area in these two species may result from lower survivorship in the open habitat, which dominated small islands. The three species that showed no relationship between abundance and island area are commonly found in open habitat on the mainland, and their island distributions paralleled the availability of open habitat on islands. Similar plant ages on different sized islands may result from their occurrence in open habitat on both large and small islands. Overall results support the habitat hypothesis and indicate that species distributions result from the interaction between habitat affinities and changes in habitat availability with island area.  相似文献

Aim To relate variation in the migration capacity and colonization ability of island communities to island geography and species island occupancy. Location Islands off mainland Britain and Ireland. Methods Mean migration (transfer) capacity and colonization (establishment) ability (ecological indices), indexed from 12 ecological variables for 56 butterfly species living on 103 islands, were related to species nestedness, island and mainland source geography and indices using linear regression models, RLQ analysis and fourth‐corner analysis. Random creation of faunas from source species, rank correlation and rank regression were used to examine differences between island and source ecological indices, and relationships to island geography. Results Island butterfly faunas are highly nested. The two ecological indices related closely to island occupancy, nestedness rank of species, island richness and geography. The key variables related to migration capacity were island area and isolation; for colonization ability they were area, isolation and longitude. Compared with colonization ability, migration capacity was found to correlate more strongly with island species occupancy and species richness. For island faunas, the means for both ecological indices decreased, and variation increased, with increasing island species richness. Mean colonization ability and migration capacity values were significantly higher for island faunas than for mainland source faunas, but these differences decreased with island latitude. Main conclusions The nested pattern of butterfly species on islands off mainland Britain and Ireland relates strongly to colonization ability but especially to migration capacity. Differences in colonization ability among species are most obvious for large, topographically varied islands. Generalists with abundant multiple resources and greater migration capacity are found on all islands, whereas specialists are restricted to large islands with varied and long‐lived biotopes, and islands close to shore. The inference is that source–sink dynamics dominate butterfly distributions on British and Irish islands; species are capable of dispersing to new areas, but, with the exception of large and northern islands, facilities (resources) for permanent colonization are limited. The pattern of colonization ability and migration capacity is likely to be repeated for mainland areas, where such indices should provide useful independent measures for assessing the conservation status of faunas within spatial units.  相似文献

Three species of marine nemerteans described and illustrated from Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, include one new genus and two new species: these are the monostiliferous hoplonemerteans Thallasionemertes leucocephala gen. et sp. nov. and Correanemertes polyophthalma sp. nov. A new colour variety of the heteronemertean Micrura callima is also reported, this species previously only being known from Rottnest Island, Western Australia. A key for the field identification of the marine nemerteans recorded from coastal Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef is provided.  相似文献

Many related bird species differ through their conspicuous plumage coloration characteristics. On islands, birds often have a drabber plumage coloration than their mainland counterpart. This rule is regarded as the main evidence for the species recognition hypothesis, because on islands mostly only one species per genus is present. In the absence of congeners there may be no benefit from a species specific badge, with drabness as a result. However drabness as such is not predicted by this species recognition hypothesis. In fact the only selective pressure caused by a species recognition mechanism, works in sympatry. Therefore on an island with no related species present, the elaborate coloration that originated in the mainland situation, is allowed to evolve in any sense, or may even not evolve at all. Taking this all together, if under the. species recognition hypothesis island taxa may evolve at random with respect to colouration, and island drabness is a well known phenomenon, then an additional mechanism inherent to the island situation is needed, that causes the degradation of any bright plumage colouration. As a consequence, island drabness in itself does not provide any information at all on the original mechanism that caused plumage elaboration on the mainland.  相似文献
