SUMMARY. 1. Potential phosphatase activity and phytoplankton from several lakes of different character were compared in order to evaluate the importance of lake water pH and phytoplankton composition for the activity and pH optimum of lake water phosphatases.
2. In oligotrophic lakes, in which phytoplankton biomass was most often dominated by Ochromonadaceae spp., optimum phosphate activity was found at pH values <6. In eutrophic lakes, where species of Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae dominated the phytoplankton biomass, optimum phosphatase activity was found at pH 7.5 or 8.5.
3. The pH optimum of phosphatase activity often differed from the corresponding lake water pH.
4. Experimental variation in phosphorus availability resulted in predictable changes in phosphatase activity. However, specific phosphatase activity, calculated per biomass of phytoplankton, was dependent on plankton species composition.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The summertime phytoplankton assemblage in abysmally deep (Zmax: 589 m) Crater Lake, Oregon, consists of over 100 species, which are variously distributed in the upper 200 m of the vertical water column. The depth distribution of the lake's three most prevalent species follows a predictabk pattern: Nitzschia gracilis in the 0–20 m stratum, Tribonema sp. at mid–depth (80–20 m), and Stephanodiscus hantzschii in the lowermost stratum (160–200 m). These major species, which account for approximately 80% or more of the lake's total phytoplankton biomass and primary production, exist under atypical temperature, light, and nutrient conditions.
2. The spatial distribution of phytoplankton in Crater Lake resembles a three-tier structure. Unlike most lakes, where the entire phytoplankton communities exist in less disparate environmental conditions, or are vertically mixed periodically by storm events and seasonal lake turnover. the Crater Lake community is partitioned into stratified environments.
5. The disparate and unusual characteristics of these environments, and the hydrological and limnological stability of the lake basin, are perhaps important factors regulating the diversity, dominance. and partitioning of the lake's phytoplankton populations.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Three Chaoborus species dominated in abundance and biomass the mid-lake benthic fauna of a small, natural Nigerian lake. Each population showed distinct seasonal varialitions. C. anomalus being most abundant during the early rainy season, while ( ceratopogones and C edults were most abundant during the dry season. A fourth species. C. fuscinervis (not reported previously from West Africa), was collected only in the adult stage. Also abundant at mid-lake were the Chironomidae. Chironomus seydeli, Prodadius brevipetiolatus and Tanypus brevipalpis. all of which showed a seasonal pattern most resembling that of C. anomalus .
2. Second. third and fourth instar larvae and pupae of the Clutoborus species underwent a diel vertical migration between the lake sediments (diurnal) and the water column (nocturnal) which was strongly related to prevailing light conditions.
3. Lunar periodicities of Chaoborus emergence determined from emergence trap collections are described for the first time. Corresponding lunar periodicities of larval abundance were observed in two of the species. The statistical techniques employed in describing the lunar periodicities permit the estimahon of generation times.
4. C. anomalus is believed to be parthenogenetie in the study lake (no males collected). while the other Chaoborus species are bisexual (1:1 sex ratios). The biology of this species is discussed in relation to the parthenogenetie condition.  相似文献

1. Surface-sediment assemblages of subfossil chironomid head capsules from fifty-four primarily shallow and nutrient-rich Danish lakes were analysed using multivariate numerical techniques. The species data, comprising forty-one chironomid taxa, were compared to environmental monitoring data in order to establish a relationship between chironomid faunal composition and lake trophic state.
2. The subfossil assemblages were compared to the chironomid bathymetric distributions along transects from four lakes. Correspondence analysis and similarity coefficients showed that the subfossil assemblages, sampled in the lake centre, reflect the chironomid communities in the littoral at a depth of 2–7 m.
3. Two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) was used to classify the Danish lakes into five groups defined by trophic state, lake depth and pH. Eighteen chironomid taxa showed significant differences in abundance among the five groups. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed the chlorophyll a concentration ([Chl a ]) and Secchi depth to be the variables best correlated to the faunal data, and fourteen taxa were significantly correlated to [Chl a ].
4. The strong correlation between chironomid data and the ln-transformed ([Chl a ]) was used to create a weighted averaging (WA) model to infer lake trophic state. Several models were tested by cross validation (leave-one-out jack-knifing), and a simple WA model using inverse de-shrinking had a RMSEPjack of 0.65 (ln units) and a r 2jack of 0.67.
5. The results can be used in the assessment and reconstruction of lake trophic state for long-term monitoring and palaeoecological investigations of shallow, temperate lakes in the mesotrophic to hypertrophic nutrient range.  相似文献

Aim  There is no previous direct evidence for the occurrence of lacustrine refuges for invertebrate fauna in Antarctica spanning the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). In the absence of verified LGM lacustrine refuges many species are believed to result from Holocene dispersal from sub-Antarctic islands and continents further north. If freshwater lake environments were present throughout the LGM, extant freshwater species may have been associated with Antarctica prior to this glacial period. This study looked at faunal microfossils in a sediment core from an Antarctic freshwater lake. This lake is unusual in that, unlike most Antarctic lakes, the sediment record extends to c . 130,000 yr bp , i.e. prior to the LGM.
Location  Lake Reid, Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica (76°23' E; 69°23' S).
Methods  Palaeofaunal communities in Lake Reid were identified through examination of faunal microfossils in a sediment core that extended to c . 130,000 yr bp .
Results  Ephippia and mandibles from the cladoceran Daphniopsis studeri and loricae of the rotifer Notholca sp. were found at all depths in the sediment, indicating that these two species have been present in the lake for up to 130,000 years. Copepod mandibles were also present in the older section of the core, yet were absent from the most recent sediments, indicating extinction of this species from Lake Reid during the LGM.
Main conclusion  The presence of D. studeri and Notholca sp. microfossils throughout the entire Lake Reid core is the first direct evidence of a glacial lacustrine refugium for invertebrate animals in Antarctica, and indicates the presence of a relict fauna on the Antarctic continent.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. To investigate the contribution of hatchlings from lake- Daphnia resting eggs (ephippia) to population and community structure, hatching was monitored in situ from April to November 1986 in two north German lakes. Hatching traps were placed on the sediments and the incidence, genetic and species composition of ephippial hatchlings determined twice-weekly.
2. Hatching began in April after the thawing of ice. and continued for 3–4 weeks until the lakes stratified. There was no obvious relationship between the onset and duration of hatching and the environmental variables recorded, namely Secchi depth, surface temperature, temperature and oxygen concentration at the sediment-water interface.
3. Among the hatchlings were D. galeata, D. hyalina and their interspecific hybrid.
4. In the lake which contained overwintering animals the number of ephippial hatchlings was approximately one third of the total number of juveniles present in the lake.
5. In the second lake, no adults were recorded during winter and the population was probably founded by ephippial hatchlings alone. There was good agreement, in the short term, between the proportion of each species represented among hatchlings and the subsequent species composition in the lake.
6. The hatchlings were genetically diverse, and alleles were representative of those alleles present in contemporary populations.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Profundal macroinvertebrates and water chemistry of sixty-eight nutrient poor, poorly buffered lakes were sampled in 1983 or 1986. Assemblages of profundal zoobenthos were classified using two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN), ordinated by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), and related to physico-chemical factors using CCA. discriminant analysis, and regression.
2. 90% of zoobenthos (TWINSPAN) groups were classified correctly using discriminant analysis. Depth (Function 1), soluble reactive Si(OH)4 and HCO3, -(2), and phytoplankton biovolume and pH (3) were the strongest correlates with the three discriminant functions.
3. Regression analysis showed that depth, KmnO4, consumption, and phytoplankton biovolume were the best estimators of zoobenthos biomass in the profundal.
4. Multivariate analyses showed species assemblages amongst the profundal zoobenthos to be good indicators of lake type, particularly depth, pH, and phytoplankton biovolume.  相似文献

Geographical patterns of species turnover in aquatic plant communities   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. A classic theory in biogeography predicts that high latitude communities are unstable. This may be because of decreased species richness or decreased environmental predictability and productivity towards the poles.
2. We studied latitudinal patterns in long-term community persistence of aquatic vascular plants in 112 Finnish lakes, situated within a 1000-km range from the northernmost to the southernmost lake.
3. Contrary to theoretical predictions, we found that the turnover rate of plant species in 45 years was inversely related to latitude. That is, plant communities in northern lakes were more persistent than communities in southern lakes. When we used multiple regression to find the best predictors of species turnover rate (TR), latitude was the only variable that was highly significantly related to species turnover rate. Area, species number, water transparency, pH and change in transparency did not notably explain the gradient observed.
4. The latitudinal trend was mainly because of lower species immigration rates at higher latitudes, whereas extinction rate did not so strongly decrease with increasing latitude. Immigrations and extinctions in the lakes were not in balance: the species numbers between the 1930s and 1980s increased more strongly in the southern than northern lakes.
5. We suggest that the inverse relationship between latitude and plant species TR in Finland is most probably caused by human influence on lakes, especially eutrophication and immigration of new species in southern latitudes. In addition, although species richness per lake did not decrease towards the north, the total species pool probably does, which means that in the north there are fewer species that can actually immigrate.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. During the summer of 1987 we conducted an acidification experiment using large enclosure at Emerald Lake, a dilute, high-elevation lake in the Sierra Nevada, California, U.S.A. The experiment was designed to examine the effects of acidification on the zooplankton and zoobenthos assemblages of Sierran lakes.
2. Treatments consisted of a control (pH 6.3) and pH levels of 5.8, 5.4, 5.3, 5.0 and 4.7; each treatment was run in triplicate. The experiment lasted 35 days.
3. The zooplankton assemblage was sensitive to acidification. Daphnia rosea Sars emend. Richard and Diaptomns signicauda Lilljeborg decreased in abundance below pH 5.5–5.8, and virtually disappeared below pH 5.0. Bosmina longirostris (Müller) and Keratella taurocephala Ahlstrom became more abundant with decreasing pH. although B. longirostris was rare in the pH 4.7 treatment. These species might serve as reliable indicators of early acidification in lakes such as Emerald Lake.
4. The elimination of D. rosea in acidified treatments probably allowed the more acid-tolerant taxa to increase in abundance because interspecific competition was reduced. Even slight acidification can therefore alter the structure of the zooplankton assemblage.
5. In contrast to the zooplankton, there was no evidence that the zoobenthos in the enclosures was affected by acidification.  相似文献

Lake Kotto is a shallow crater lake, sometimes weakly stratified, and with a dense phytoplankton dominated by blue-green algae. The ecology of Lake Kotto and the similar, smaller lake Mboandong is described in relation to the feeding biology of their fishes. Of the five species of cichlids in Lake Kotto only one is endemic. Two are phytoplankton-feeders, one takes invertebrates as well as phytoplankton, one feeds mainly on chironomid larvae, and one preys on vertebrates as well as on invertebrates. The three phytoplanktivores are the main species eaten by man. One species of Clarias and one of Barbus also occur in Lake Kotto; and in the associated streams are four species of cyprinodont fishes. The fish fauna of Mboandong consists of three species of cichlids and two cyprinodonts, all known from the Kotto system. We contrast Lake Kotto with the oligotrophic lake Barombi Mbo, and conclude that Lake Kotto would probably be less sensitive to human interference than would Barombi Mbo.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The potential tor competition in the zooplankton of small Araucana Lake (Andes, Argentina) was tested experimentally.
2. Laboratory enrichment of lake water with nutrients resulted in an increased abundance of nannoplankton with the cyanobacteria Gloeocapsa minor predominating.
3. The dominant species of zooplankton showed contrasting responses to enrichment: the abundance of Bosmina longirostris increased, whereas that of Ceriodaphnia dubia decreased relative to the corresponding controls.
4. The clearance rates for various nannoplankton by these cladocerans were similar, resulting in high niche overlap as estimated by the Pianka index.
5. Life table experiments showed that when fed on a pure suspension of lake flagellates (103 cells ml−1) Ceriodaphnia had a significantly higher average intrinsic rate of natural increase ( r ) than on a suspension of Gloeocapsa (0.28 v . 0.146); in the case of Bosmina no significant differences for the two foods were found (0.182 and 0.141, respectively).
6. The contrasting responses of the animals to enrichment are explained by the differing suitability of particular nannoplankton species as food for different cladoceran species. The seasonal succession in the species composition and food quality of nannoplankton may be important for the coexistence of competing zooplankters in lakes.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Quantitative benthic samples were collected monthly between June 1984 and May 1985 from seven stations at various depths in Lake Zwai, one of the Ethiopian Rift Valley lakes, situated in the northern part of the Rift Valley. The most common species of ostracods were Limnocythere thomasi thomasi Martens (a subspecies endemic to Lake Zwai), Gomphocythere angutata Lowndes (common in, but restricted to. East Africa) and Darwinula stevensoni (Brady & Robertson) (cosmopolitan).
2. Absolute densities of all species varied considerably over the year. In all stations, there were population peaks during the two dry seasons, followed by as yet unexplained population crashes during the short and the long rains.
3. The three common species had different habitat preferences. Darwinula stevensoni avoids parts of the lake where temperatures rise high and both G. angulata and L. thomasi had a preference for sheltered habitats close to vegetation and/or for a specific grain size of the sediment (300–350 μm).  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Tagimaucia crater lake and swamp are located at an altitude of 820m in Taveuni, Fiji (lat. 16°S; long. 179°56'W). Rainfall exceeds evaporation in all seasons and residence time for water in the shallow lake (2.5–5.5 m deep) is only 4 days.
2. Dissolved ion concentrations are low (conductivity 14–18μScm−lat 25°C), and the water is slightly acidic (pH 5.0–6.5 at 25°C), Median total phosphorus (0.5 gm−3) and total nitrogen (3.3gm−3) are moderately high and probably represent dissolved and suspended organic matter. Median chlorophyll a concentrations (2.5 mg−3) were low and indicate low phytoplankton productivity.
3. The swamp vegetation is dominated by Lepironia articulate (Retz.) Domin and algae which form floating sedge peat islands, and Pandanus taveuniensis St John and other small trees where alluvium and colluvium are infilling the margins of the crater. The surrounding slopes are forested.
4. The fauna of the lake and swamp are low in both diversity and abundance. The only aquatic vertebrates observed were Anguilla eels and cane toads, Bufo marinus L., and the only bird was the swamp harrier, Circus approximans approximate Peale. A variety of aquatic insects were observed but crustaceans and other invertebrate taxa were scarcely recorded.
5. Although the swamp and lake are otherwise undisturbed, several recently introduced plants and animals have been recorded.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Pelagic and epipelic microalgal production were measured over a year in a pre-defined area (depth 0.5 m) in each of two lakes, one turbid and one with clear water. Further estimates of epiphytic production within reed stands were obtained by measuring production of periphyton developed on artificial substrata.
2. Total annual production of phytoplankton and epipelon was 34% greater in the turbid lake (190 g C m−2 year−1) than in the clearwater lake (141 g C m−2 year−1). However, the ratio of total production to mean water column TP concentration was two fold greater in the clearwater lake.
3. Phytoplankton accounted for the majority of the annual production (96%) in the turbid lake, while epipelic microalgal production dominated (77%) in the clear lake. The relative contribution of epipelic algae varied over the year, however, and in the turbid lake was higher in winter (11–25%), when the water was relatively clear, than during summer (0.7–1.7%), when the water was more turbid. In the clearwater lake, the relative contribution of epipelon was high both in winter, when the water was most clear, and in mid-summer, when phytoplankton production was constrained either by nutrients or grazing.
4. Compared with pelagic and epipelic primary production, epiphytic production within a reed stand was low and did not vary significantly between the lakes.
5. The study supports the theory of a competitive and compensatory trade-off between primary producers in lakes with contrasting nutrient concentrations, resulting in relatively small differences in overall production between clear and turbid lakes when integrating over the season and over different habitats.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The abundance and species composition of the phytoplankton of Grasmere were monitored over a 12-year period following the commissioning of a small sewage treatment works, upstream of the lake.
2. Although Grasmere has been subject to increased phosphorus-loading and has quickly developed many features associated with eutrophication, the composition of its plankton has retained the characteristics of a mesotrophic, soft-water lake: a vernal diatom maximum, generally dominated by Asterionella , is followed by summer growths of nanoplanktonic species, of various colonial Chlorophyceae, before a substantial return to Asterionella-dominance in the autumn. In cooler summers there have been episodes of renewed diatom growth. followed by truncated recapitulations of the essential summer sequence. Anabaena solitaria was relatively common in drier summers when dissolved inorganic nitrogen fell to low concentrations, although many of the 'larger' algal species associated with stratified eutrophic lakes (Aphanizomenon, Microcystis, Ceratium spp.) have failed to become abundant in Grasmere.
3. Mean biomass levels (as indicated by chlorophyll concentration) have increased in response to the enrichment, though they do not conform well with most chlorophyll/phosphorus regression-models.
4. The key factor resisting a more complete transition to a typical eutrophic plankton appears to be the efficiency of episodic flushing of the lake during periods of high fluvial discharge sustained by heavy rainfall over the extensive, mountainous catchment. The probabilities that these limnological conditions might fail to deter the development of 'nuisance' blooms are briefly assessed.  相似文献

1. Artificial mixing in the hypertrophic Lake Nieuwe Meer was successful in preventing blooms of the cyanobacterium Microcystis. During the 2 years of artificial, deep mixing the number of colonies of Microcystis per litre and also per m2 was lower than in the two preceding control years. Hardly any nuisance scums of Microcystis occurred in the lake.
2. The phytoplankton shifted from a cyanobacteria-dominated community in summer to a mixed community of flagellates, green algae and diatoms. Reduced sedimentation losses in the mixed lake, probably in combination with a lower pH, favoured non-buoyant algae, while the entrainment of cyanobacteria in the turbulent flow nullified their advantage of buoyancy.
3. The chlorophyll concentrations were much lower in the mixed lake, but the euphotic depth did not show clear differences between the years. The chlorophyll content integrated through depth (m–2) increased in the artificially mixed lake.
4. The deep lake normally stratified in summer, but artificial mixing of the lake in 1993 resulted in a homogeneous temperature and oxygen distribution with depth. In spring 1994, the mixing was applied intermittently with a reduction of 75% of the energy costs, while the mixing was still sufficient to prevent stratification.
5. Determination of the buoyancy state of the colonies on a sunny and calm day showed that the buoyancy loss was low close to the bubble plumes, and high at some distance from these plumes. This suggests that Microcystis could escape the mixing at some distance from the plumes, and could synthesize more carbohydrates during its stay in the upper illuminated layer of the lake than the deep mixed colonies close to the bubble plumes. Determination of the buoyancy state appeared to be a good and simple method to investigate the extent of entrainment of colonies in the turbulent flow.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Two rooted freshwater macrophytes ( Lagarosiphon major (Ridley) Moss; Myriophyllum triphyllum Orchard) were grown in two lakes of differing trophic status on sediments collected from an eutrophic lake. In the two experiments (summer and winter) in the oligotrophic lake (Lake Taupo, New Zealand), the relative growth rates of both species were approximately double those recorded in the experiments in the eutrophic take (Lake Rotorua, New Zealand). These growth responses occurred even though the light and temperature regimes were similar at the experimental sites in both lakes and the concentrations of inorganic nutrients were higher in the eutrophic lake water.
2. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) analysis of both lake waters indicated that the oligotrophic water had approximately 10-fold more DIC than the eutrophic water. This corresponded, at natural pH, to a 2-fold higher concentration of free-CO2 in the oligotrophic lake water (49 μM) than in the eutrophic lake water (23 μM). Photosynthetic experiments demonstrated that the maximum rates of photosynthesis were 2.46 and 2.25-fold higher in L. major and M. triphyllum , respectively, when the shoots were incubated in Lake Taupo water at Lake Taupo levels of free-CO2 relative to Lake Rotorua water at Lake Rotorua levels of free-CO2.
3. It is concluded that these differences in photosynthetic rates would lead approximately to a 2-fold difference in growth rate, thus explaining the growth responses observed in the field experiments.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Constrained cluster analysis of thirty-five surface sediment diatom assemblages shows that Lough Erne, a complex multi-basin lake in Northern Ireland, can be sub-divided into four main zones.
2. All areas of the lake system have planktonic diatoms typical of eutrophic lakes but the lack of small Stephanodiscus species in zone 4 suggests that this area of the system is least productive.
3. Surface sediment diatom assemblages can be used to assess spatial variations in complex lake systems and can thereby be used as a guide to the choice of sites for water quality monitoring and sediment coring.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Lake Wisdom is of interest because it is large and deep, has oxygen throughout, and yet, apparently as a result of its recent formation, its biota has some surprising lacunae. It is nearly circular and fills the central caldera of Long Island, Papua New Guinea (5° 20′ S, 147° 6′ E). Its maximum length is 13.4 km, and area approximately 95 km2. A bathymetric map of the lake to depths of 300 m has been constructed from fathometer transects. Repeated soundings in the deeper parts gave depths of about 360 m. The surface of the lake is approximately 190 m above sea-level and water samples from the deepest part of the lake are fresh, so the basin is apparently sealed. The lake level shows annual fluctuations of c. 1.0 m. Limnological information has been collected during seven visits to Lake Wisdom over the period 1969–76. The surface temperature of the lake was constant at 28°C throughout this period and the temperature falls very gradually to 26–27°C at 60 m, except for a relatively rapid drop of approximately 1°C from 10 to 20 m. One of the most unusual features is the relatively high oxygen concentration in the deepest parts of the lake. Living chironomid larvae and molluscs were collected from the bottom in depths of 360 m. Light penetration in the lake varies greatly depending on the amount of rainfall and the volcanic activity of Motmot, a secondary cone within the lake. The biota of Lake Wisdom is rather simple. There is a low standing crop of phytoplankton. Benthic algae are abundant and diverse although they cover only a limited area because of the depth of the lake. There are no vascular aquatic plants. The pelagic fauna consists of two species of Cladocera and one species of notonectid. There is one species of sponge, four species of molluscs, and a small number of species of aquatic insects including Hemiptera. Odonata, and the larvae of chironomids, mayflies, a caddisfly, and a pyralid moth. Water birds, including ducks, grebes and waders, are fairly numerous. The lake also contains one or more crocodiles.  相似文献
