A main objective of the study is the establishment of a forensic entomological database for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Decomposition processes and beetle succession were analysed on rabbit carcasses in three different habitats (agricultural, desert and urban) in the period from May to July 2014. Due to the effects of the high temperature at the study sites, carrion reached the dry stage within 12 days in the agricultural habitat, and 6 days in the desert and urban habitats. A total of 125 beetles belonging to eight species and five families were collected during the decaying process, with their abundances increasing from the fresh to decay stages. The prevailing species belonged to the families of Dermestidae and Histeridae. It was not possible to confirm any definitive relationship between the occurrence of a single species and a particular stage of decomposition. The beetle communities were also not distinctively different between desert and urban habitats, but a distinct community was evident in the agriculture habitat. In addition, there were distinct beetle communities between the decay stage and the other stages. The dry stage recorded the lowest number of beetles. This study indicated that, the habitat type had an effect on the decay process and the abundance rate of the beetles. 相似文献

Burial has a special influence on carrion fauna, which may change the rate of decomposition and so affect postmortem estimates. This study aimed to identify species and succession of beetles on buried remains. From 28 January to 31 May 2021, we examined the Coleoptera on buried and exposed rabbit carcasses, on the campus of the University of King Saud in an area measured around 175 m by 250 m. The area is almost entirely devoid of flora, except for a few acacia trees and some common wild herbs. It is about 1 km away from residential neighborhoods. In total, 165 specimens belonging to 4 families were collected. The Tenebrionidae was the most abundant family, where it formed 52% at a depth of 20 cm and 78% at a depth of 40 cm in the buried carcasses, while the family Dermestidae was the most abundant in the surface carcasses, as it formed 53% of the insects sampled. Type Mesostena puncticollis Solier, 1835 (Tenebrionidae) predominated at exposed carcasses as well as at depths of 20, 40 cm and while type Dermestes frischii Kugelann, 1792 (Dermestidae), predominated at depth of 40 cm and exposed carcasses, and type Saprinus chalcites (Illiger, 1807) (Hisiteridae) at depth of 20 only. These findings are possibly useful in forensic investigations involving buried bodies in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 相似文献

In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, we are reporting two cases of natural death. The two bodies showed different types of habitat, insect colonization and decomposition stage. The first case was about the body of a 65-years-old male, with mummification of the clothed body was found in an outdoor habitat. Different life stages of Dermestes maculatus DeGeer (Coleoptera: Dermestidae were gathered from the cadaver, and due to the advanced degree of decomposition, the PMImin was estimated to be 3 months. The second body belonging to a 40-years-old male, was found in a semi-closed apartment (indoor habitat), and the body was at the end of the bloated decomposition stage. In this case, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) larvae were collected, and the PMImin was estimated to be 4 days. The limited insect activity for the two bodies caused by the advanced decomposition stage in the first case and indoor environment in the second. Average temperatures of (23.3 ± 1.6) °C for the first body and (27.5 ± 1.7) °C2 for the second body. Habitat was the key factor to attract insects to the two cadavers. This study stressed that, for accurate estimates of time since death, knowledge of the impact of different variables on insects found over and around the carrion is essential. 相似文献

We evaluated the occurrence of social wasps in the decomposition process in tropical rainforest in central Amazonia (Ducke Reserve, Manaus, Brazil), using cadavers of rats as attractants, exposed in suspended cages. Ten species, in three genera, of social wasps were collected only in the initial stages of decay (fresh and bloated). Five species were collected, mainly in the fresh stage, feeding on flesh: Agelaia angulata, Agelaia constructor, Agelaia fulvofasciata, Agelaia pallipes and Angiopolybia pallens. Five species were collected, mainly in the bloated stage, feeding on flesh and eggs and first instar larvae of dipteran: Agelaia testacea, Angiopolybia obidensis, Apoica arborea, Apoica pallens and Apoica thoracica. Due to the aspect of the injuries caused by the wasps to the carcass, they may be mistaken as skin ulcers, burns or abrasions, which may mislead a forensic investigation.

Hydrotaea spinigera Stein is a muscid species with high forensic importance. To further supplement the genome-level features of related species, the complete mitochondrial genome of H. spinigera is amplified, sequenced, annotated, analyzed, and compared with 13 other species of the family Muscidae. This mitogenome is 15,517?bp in length, with a standard set of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and a typical non-coding control region. The gene organization, base composition, and secondary structures of tRNA genes of this mitogenome are similar to other dipteran species. Phylogenetic analyses based on all the mitochondrial PCGs and rRNA genes for 14 muscid and one outgroup taxa are performed using Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) analysis. The inferred trees indicate that the Muscidae, the subfamily Muscinae, and the tribes Azeliini and Reinwardtiini are monophyletic, whereas the monophyly of the subfamily Azeliinae and the tribe Muscini is not supported. 相似文献

This paper studies the impacts of antemortem ingestion of alcoholic beverages by the domestic rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus L., on postmortem successional patterns of insects during winter and summer 2018 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Insect samples were collected from the carcasses of rabbits fed alcoholic beverages as well as untreated rabbits for 15 days postmortem during two successional studies in each season. The results showed that, during both seasons, the decomposition process for the carcasses of rabbits fed alcoholic beverages antemortem was one to two days longer. The results also showed, however, that alcoholic beverages did not affect insect succession patterns in either season. In fact, the number of insects appeared to be influenced by the ambient temperature during the two seasons, with 4415 insects in the winter compared to 1033 insects in the summer. In total, 30 insect taxa were collected during the winter study from the carcasses of rabbits fed alcoholic beverages antemortem; while 26 of these same taxa were collected from the carcasses of the untreated rabbits. Among the treated rabbits, those fed 25 ml alcoholic beverages treated attracted the highest number of insect taxa (24 taxa). In the summer study, 21 insect taxa were collected in total, 19 from the carcasses of the alcohol-treated rabbits and 13 from untreated rabbits. Among the treated rabbits, those fed 50 ml alcoholic beverages attracted the highest number of insect taxa (14 taxa). These results contribute to the understanding of the factors affecting the use of insects in medical investigations, given that alcoholic beverages are a common addictive agent. 相似文献

Summary Creosobebush (Larrea tridentata) fine litter was treated with either the general biocide HgCl2 and CuSO4 or water (controls) and buried 5 cm beneath the soil surface in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. The treated litter showed significantly less mass loss than controls during the three month summer-autumn field study; controls lost about 20% of the original mass while treated litter lost less than 2%. In addition, the total nitrogen content of the control litter increased from an initial concentration of about 14.08 g kg-1 to 17.62 g kg-1 dry weight by the end of the study, while treated litter nitrogen content decreased to 13.30 g kg-1. Results suggest abiotic processes other than leaching have little effect on the decomposition of buried litter in this environment. 相似文献

Fly larvae living on dead corpses can be used to estimate post-mortem intervals. The identification of these flies is decisive in forensic casework and can be facilitated by using DNA barcodes provided that a representative and comprehensive reference library of DNA barcodes is available. We constructed a local (Belgium and France) reference library of 85 sequences of the COI DNA barcode fragment (mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene), from 16 fly species of forensic interest (Calliphoridae, Muscidae, Fanniidae). This library was then used to evaluate the ability of two public libraries (GenBank and the Barcode of Life Data Systems – BOLD) to identify specimens from Belgian and French forensic cases. The public libraries indeed allow a correct identification of most specimens. Yet, some of the identifications remain ambiguous and some forensically important fly species are not, or insufficiently, represented in the reference libraries. Several search options offered by GenBank and BOLD can be used to further improve the identifications obtained from both libraries using DNA barcodes. 相似文献

This work investigates variation in the crawling speed of Protophormia terraenovae larvae (Robineau-Desvoidy) (Diptera Calliphoridae) as a function of body length and ambient temperature. A video-tracking system was used to follow the movement of larvae in an experimental arena, and to estimate their average crawling speed. Recordings were carried out at various temperatures using larvae of different developmental stages. As temperature increased, the larvae crawled at a faster speed. Furthermore, speed increased as a function of body length. We present a general allometric relationship to express the average crawling speed of larvae as a combined function of temperature and body length, expressed in the following equation: speed (cm/min)=5.45 x log[length (mm)]+0.66 x temperature (degrees C)-12.8. These results are particularly useful in forensic entomology for estimating the time that elapsed following the larva's departure from the corpse. This information can provide more accuracy for post-mortem interval estimations and a better comprehension of larvae behaviour and displacement. 相似文献

Blowfly larvae aggregate on exposed carcasses and corpses and pass through three instars before wandering from the carcass and pupating. The developmental landmarks in this process can be used by forensic entomologists to estimate the time since the insects colonised the carcass, which sets a minimum post mortem interval. Large aggregations of feeding larvae generate a microclimate with temperatures up to 15 °C above ambient conditions, which may accelerate larval development and affect forensic estimates of post-mortem intervals. This study investigated the effects of heat accumulated by maggot masses of Lucilia cuprina at aggregations of 20, 50 and 100 larvae, each at incubation temperatures of 18 °C, 24 °C and 30 °C, using body length and life stage as developmental indicators. Aggregation temperatures reached up to 18.7 °C above ambient temperature, with significant effects of both size and temperature of the aggregation on the development time of its larvae. Survivorship was highest for all life stages at 24 °C, which is near the developmental optimum of L. cuprina. The results of this study provide a broadly applicable method of quantifying heat accumulation by aggregations of a wide range of species of forensic importance, and the results obtained from such studies will demonstrate that ambient temperature cannot be considered the only source of heat that blowfly larvae experience when they develop on a carcass. Neglect of temperatures within larval aggregations will result in an overestimation of post-mortem intervals and thus have far-reaching medicolegal consequences. 相似文献

Summary. Since the entomosarcosaprophagous community is affected by environmental variables, it needs to be studied under different environmental conditions. In addition, because most studies are usually conducted with biomodels rather than human corpses, it is necessary to verify whether or not the type of decomposing animal matter affects the decomposition process itself, as well as the related fauna. For this reason, a study was conducted on the sarcosaprophagous Diptera community in two different environments of the Region of Murcia (SE Spain), using piglet and chicken carcasses, and Schoenly traps as collecting devices. To analyse possible differences regarding faunal composition among samples, a one-way Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA) was applied. The results indicate significant differences concerning the bait. In this sense, Calliphoridae, Muscidae, Fanniidae and Sarcophagidae families are the main groups responsible for such differences. In terms of environment-related differences, the only species that contribute are those of the dominant families, Calliphoridae and Muscidae. 相似文献

The composition and spatial distribution of sarcosaprophagous Diptera assemblages were studied using carrion‐baited traps along a bioclimatic gradient of natural habitats in central Spain throughout the different seasons during 1 year. Calliphoridae and Muscidae were the most abundant families, accounting for, respectively, 41.9% and 35.1% of all Diptera specimens collected. Other abundant families were Heleomyzidae (8.4%), Sarcophagidae (6.9%) and Piophilidae (5.1%). Fly assemblage compositions differed among bioclimatic levels, with Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) being the dominant species in mesomediterranean habitats, Muscina levida (Harris) (Diptera: Muscidae) the dominant species in supramediterranean habitats, and Prochyliza nigrimana (Meigen) (Diptera: Piophilidae) the dominant species in oromediterranean habitats. Differences in assemblage composition were also found among seasons. Thermophobic species such as Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and some species of Heleomyzidae were well represented during autumn, winter and spring in the three bioclimatic levels sampled. By contrast, thermophilic species such as Ch. albiceps and Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and most Muscidae and Sarcophagidae species were more abundant during summer and in mesomediterranean habitats located at lower elevations. Knowledge of the preferences of some species for certain habitats may be of ecological and forensic value and may establish a starting point for further research. 相似文献

Numerous insect species are necrophagous, with Dipterans and Coleopterans being the most abundant on a corpse. Whether the presence of necrophageous species on a corpse affects the attraction of adult blowflies to the corpse is sparsely studied. We test the hypothesis that Lucilia sericata can discriminate the odour of a noncolonized cadaver from the odour of a cadaver on which conspecific and/or heterospecific necrophagous insects are feeding. The volatile organic compounds are collected from decomposing rats under four modalities: (i) in the absence of insects; (ii) in the presence of L. sericata adults; (iii) in the presence of Dermestes frischii adults; (iv) and in the presence of both D. frischii adults and L. sericata adults. During a multiple‐choice bioassay, blowflies are exposed to the four odour samples, and are shown to prefer the odour of a corpse where conspecific larvae are present. We also expect blowflies to avoid cadavers on which predators where present, although L. sericata are not repulsed by the odour of a cadaver colonized by hide beetles. We then compare the average quantities of all 61 volatile molecules identified, finding that the presence of necrophagous insects impacts some of them. However, none of the volatile organic compounds previously reported in the literature as being attractive for L. sericata adults are impacted by the presence of necrophagous insects. The results of the present study suggest that blowfly larvae modify the volatilome of a corpse, enabling adults to discriminate a colonized from a noncolonized corpse. 相似文献

Forensic science uses scientific methods to help the scientists who study evidence to assist in the solving of crimes. Coleoptera is the most diverse and speciose group of insects that have an important role in many scientific fields especially forensic entomology. In addition, it is difficult to morphologically identify and discriminate between them. In the present study, the molecular analysis using mitochondrial DNA information was conducted to swiftly and accurately identify the recovered Coleoptera species. A molecular identification method involving a 221‐bp segment of the 16 s ribosomal RNA (16 s rRNA) gene from three beetle species, collected from a rabbit carcass, was evaluated. The analysis with maximum likelihood method recovered a generally well supported phylogeny, with most currently accepted taxa and species groups as monophyletic. These results will be instrumental for the implementation of the Saudian database of forensically relevant beetles. 相似文献

- The hairy maggot blow fly (Chrysomya rufifacies: Macquart) is an invasive necrophagous fly found throughout the continental United States. Chrysomya rufifacies is of medical/veterinary, forensic, and ecological importance due to its ability to cause myiasis, colonise human remains, and displace native Diptera. However, little is known about their upper thermal tolerance, which could be used to better predict their invasion potential.
- We investigated the upper thermal tolerance of C. rufifacies exposed to different temperatures (20–45 °C), times (1–6 h), and nutrients (no food or water, water only, or a food-water mixture) for both sexes and two age ranges (young = 6–8 days post pupal emergence; old = 9–11 days post pupal emergence).
- As temperature or duration increased, the probability of knockdown increased (0–100% at 20 and 45 °C and from 41 to 75% at 1 and 6 h), while the probability of survival decreased (99–2% at 20 and 45 °C and from 75 to 28% at 1 and 6 h). The availability of nutrients increased thermal tolerance at moderate temperatures (40 and 42 °C). Female flies were more thermally tolerant than males (probability of knockdown = 49% vs 58%; probability of survival = 58% vs 46%). Thermal tolerance did not differ by age.
- These data reveal details about the upper thermal tolerance for a single population of C. rufifacies, and suggest that environmental and organismal factors ought to be considered in order to make meaningful predictions about the invasion potential of C. rufifacies in North America.

Sarcophaga dux (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is a necrophagous flesh fly species with potential forensic value for estimating minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). The basic developmental data and precise age estimates of the pupae are significant for PMImin estimation in forensic investigations. In the present study, we investigated the development data of that species at seven constant temperatures varying from 16 °C to 34 °C, including body length changes of the larve, developmental duration and accumulated degree hours of the preadults. Several reference genes for relative quantification of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were firstly selected and evaluated in the pupae of different ages under different temperatures. The DEGs of the insects during the pupal period at different constant temperatures (34, 25 and 16 °C) were further analyzed for more precise age estimation. The results showed that the developmental durations of the preadults at 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31 and 34 °C were 1478.6 ± 18.3 h, 726.1 ± 15.8 h, 538.5 ± 0.9 h, 394.1 ± 9.5 h, 375.6 ± 10.8 h, 284.1 ± 7.3 h, and 252.5 ± 6.1 h, respectively. The developmental threshold temperature the flies was 12.27 ± 0.35 °C, and the thermal summation constant was 5341.71 ± 249.29° hours. The most reliable reference genes during the pupal period at different temperatures were found: GST1 and 18S rRNA for the 34 °C group, GST1 and RPL49 for 25 °C, and 18S rRNA and 28S rRNA for 16 °C. The four differential expression genes (Hsp60, A-alpha, ARP, and RPL8) have the potential to be used for more precise age estimation of pupal S. dux. This work provides important basic developmental data and a more precise age estimation method for pupal S. dux, and improves the value of this species for PMImin estimation in forensic investigations. 相似文献
