Superparasitism is a widespread phenomenon in parasitoids and may be advantageous in some circumstances. In this study, offspring sex ratio was analysed in three superparasitism situations: when the second egg was laid by a random Eupelmus vuilleti (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) female from a group, when an isolated female was allowed to lay two eggs on the same host (self-superparasitism) or laid one egg on a host already parasitized by a conspecific (conspecific superparasitism). Females produced a different offspring sex ratio according to the different superparasitism situations tested. These sex ratios are in line with the local mate competition theory. The results further suggest that females can discriminate between hosts parasitized by a conspecific or by themselves and adapt the sex of the eggs they lay accordingly.

Because hosts utilized by parasitoids are vulnerable to further oviposition by conspecifics, host guarding benefits female wasps. The present study aims to test whether female adults regulate brood guarding behaviour by host discrimination in a solitary parasitoid Trissolcus semistriatus by presenting an intact or parasitized host egg mass to a female adult. Virgin females without oviposition experience have host discrimination ability, which enables them to adjust the number of eggs laid in the hosts. Mating experience increases superparasitism by female adults, whereas mated females achieve a higher discrimination ability as a result of oviposition experience and show a lower superparasitism rate. As expected, females exhibit brood guard after parasitizing an intact host egg mass, whereas those females visiting a previously parasitized host egg mass, do not. Because the survival of eggs in superparasitized hosts is relatively low, regulating brood guarding behaviour by host discrimination is adaptive for female wasps.

Most parasitoid female wasps can distinguish between unparasitized and parasitized hosts and use this information to optimize their progeny and sex allocation. In this study, we explored the impact of mating on oviposition behaviour (parasitism and self‐ and conspecific superparasitism) on both unparasitized and already parasitized hosts in the solitary parasitoid wasp Eupelmus vuilleti (Crw.) (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae). Virgin and mated females had the same oviposition behaviour and laid eggs preferentially on unparasitized hosts. The sex ratio (as the proportion of females) of eggs laid by mated females in parasitism and conspecific superparasitism was 0.67 ± 0.04 and 0.57 ± 0.09, respectively. Likewise, females laid more eggs in conspecific superparasitism than self‐superparasitism under our experimental conditions. These experiments demonstrate that E. vuilleti females can (i) discriminate between unparasitized and parasitized hosts and adapt the number of eggs they lay accordingly, and (ii) probably discriminate self from conspecific superparasitized hosts. Finally, mating does not appear to influence the host discrimination capacity, the ovarian function, or the oviposition behaviour.

The fitness consequences of superparasitism and the mechanism of host discrimination in Cotesia flavipes, a larval parasitoid of concealed stemborer larvae was investigated. Naive females readily superparasitized and treated the already parasitized host as an unparasitized host by allocating the same amount of eggs as in an unparasitized host. However, there was no significant increase in the number of emerging parasitoids from superparasitized hosts due to substantial mortality of parasitoid offspring in superparasitized hosts. Furthermore, the developmental time of the parasitoids in a superparasitized host was significantly longer than in a singly parasitized host and the emerging progeny were significantly smaller (body length and head width). Naive females entered a tunnel in which the host was parasitized 4 h previously and accepted it for oviposition. Experienced females (oviposition experience in unparasitized host) refused to enter a tunnel with a host parasitized by herself or by another female. In experiments where the tunnel and/or host was manipulated it was demonstrated that the female leaves a mark in the tunnel when she parasitizes a host. The role of patch marking in C. flavipes is discussed in relation to the ecology of the parasitoid.

The role of sex-controlling behaviour at oviposition in generating primary sex ratios, and the effect of larval competition on secondary sex ratios, were studied in the gregarious endoparasitoid, Trichogramma chilonis. The production of a fertilized (female) egg is indicated by the incorporation of a pause in abdominal movements during oviposition, while the absence of it indicates the production of an unfertilized (male) egg. During each ovipositional bout, the first male egg is deposited at the second oviposition, and thereafter at intervals of about eight eggs. This simple pattern enables the wasps to adjust their progeny sex ratios under local male competition to a wide range of host size. Inexperienced wasps do not distinguish between parasitized and healthy hosts. Immature mortality is not significantly different between the sexes when a host is attacked by a single wasp, while females suffer higher immature mortality than males when superparasitism occurs.

The recognition and avoidance of already parasitized hosts is a major issue in parasitoid behavioural ecology. A key factor affecting the fitness reward expected from superparasitism is the probability that the second or subsequent egg laid on a host will win the contest with the first-laid egg. The present study investigated the ability of females of the solitary ecto parasitoid Anisopteromalus calandrae Howard (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) to (i) discriminate between unparasitized Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) hosts and those parasitized by a conspecific, and (ii) discriminate between a host parasitized by an egg just laid (2 h) and one parasitized by an egg about to hatch (28 h). However, they did not adjust their offspring sex ratio on already parasitized hosts compared to unparasitized ones. Our results show that A. calandrae females can discriminate between parasitized and unparasitized hosts, as they lay more eggs on the latter. The probability of the second or subsequent egg laid on a host (superparasitism) winning the contest with a conspecific increases as the time between the two ovipositions decreases. Consequently, parasitoid females should lay more eggs on recently parasitized hosts than on those that have been parasitized for a long time (i.e., when the first eggs are about to hatch), and that is indeed what they were found to do. To increase their fitness in spite of the presence of already parasitized hosts, A. calandrae females have developed highly discriminative capacities regarding the parasitism status of hosts.

Abstract.
  • 1 The pay-off from an egg laid in a parasitized host is an important parameter in models on adaptive superparasitism in solitary insect parasitoids.
  • 2 For Leptopilina heterotoma, a parasitoid of larval Drosophila, the pay-off from a second egg laid in a host is 0.43 offspring when the interval between the two ovipositions is less than 3h. For longer intervals, this pay-off decreases to almost zero for an interval of 24 h.
  • 3 When a female encountering a parasitized host is able to estimate the interval since the first oviposition, it is expected that she will take this into account in her host selection decisions. This is, however, not in the direct interest of the female that lays the first egg, and marks the host.
  • 4 We studied whether superparasitism in hosts containing a young egg is more common than in hosts containing an older egg, when searching in a patch containing once-parasitized and unparasitized hosts.
  • 5 The acceptance/encounter ratio of parasitized hosts increased for intervals longer than 6h, as predicted when the interests of the marking female and the longevity of the mark are taken into account.
  • 6 Superparasitism occurred more often when parasitoids had previously searched a host patch 7 days before the experiment compared to when parasitoids had searched a patch 1 day before, a phenomenon predicted by dynamic optimal diet models.

Female parasitoids are expected to avoid superparasitism (ovipositing in and/or on parasitized hosts) when unparasitized hosts are available. However, when the supply of unparasitized hosts is restricted, they are expected to self‐ as well as conspecifically superparasitize. One of the cues of a reduced availability of unparasitized hosts is the presence of a conspecific. Moreover, if the focal species can perform infanticide, after encountering a conspecific female, the females are expected to kill eggs existing in and/or on hosts when superparasitizing, because the eggs are more likely to be laid by others. In this study we investigated whether females of an infanticidal semisolitary parasitoid, Echthrodelphax fairchildii, increase their frequencies of superparasitism and infanticide after encountering a conspecific female. Echthrodelphax fairchildii females are capable of discriminating between self‐ and conspecific superparasitism until up to 0.75 h after the first egg was laid (self‐superparasitism frequency < conspecific superparasitism frequency). As expected, the female parasitoids were more likely to perform self‐ and conspecific superparasitism after they had encountered a conspecific. In particular, the self‐superparasitism frequency increased highly within a short period after the first oviposition, so that no difference between the self‐ and conspecific superparasitism frequencies was found. In contrast, the infanticidal‐probing frequency remained extremely low, irrespective of whether or not the female parasitoids had encountered a conspecific. Moreover, when superparasitizing, females usually laid female eggs. Possible causes for the low frequency of infanticidal probing and the female‐biased sex ratio are discussed.

In Africa, the seeds and/or pods ofVigna unguiculata andVigna radiata (Papilionacea) are attacked in fields and storage structures by bruchid beetlesCallosobruchus maculatus andBruchidius atrolineatus, on which parasitoid communities can develop. One of these parasitoids is the solitary ectoparasitoidEupelmus vuilleti (Eupelmidae). The storage conditions ofV. unguiculata andV. radiata favor the overlapping of all host stages during several months. These conditions suggest that female parasitoids would vary the sex ratio of their offspring according to the different sizes or developmental stages of hosts. The sex ratio ofE. vuilleti was strongly related to the developmental stage of the hostC. maculatus. Under our experimental conditions, where superparasitism is rare, the proportion of daughters varied between 5 and 25% on the third larval stage but reached 70 to 90% on the pupae. The increase in the proportion of daughters was also observed in the absence of superparasitism. In this case, there was an absolute coincidence between the sex ratio of eggs laid and that of emerged adults. Manipulation of the sex of the egg by the females seems to take place at the time of the egg's fertilization. The relation between host weight and egg sex showed that the male eggs are preferentially laid on lighter host larvae and the female eggs on heavier ones.

In nature, most species of Lepidoptera are attacked by parasitoids, and some species may be hosts for several parasitoid species. When hosts are parasitized by more than one female of the same species (=superparasitism) or females of different species (=multiparasitism), then intrinsic competition occurs for control of host resources. To reduce competition, some parasitoids are able to recognize the difference between parasitized and unparasitized hosts. Inter- and intra-specific host discrimination were investigated in the two sympatric species, the gregarious Cotesia kariyai (Watanabe) and solitary Meteorus pulchricornis (Wesmael), endoparasitoids of the Oriental armyworm Mythimna separata (Walker). To measure host discrimination, choice experiments were conducted in which females of both species foraged and chose between healthy host larvae and hosts initially parasitized by either C. kariyai or M. pulchricornis. An olfactory test was also performed to examine the discrimination behavior of the two parasitoids. Our results showed that, in oviposition choice tests, both braconid female wasps were able to discriminate between unparasitized hosts and from four to seven day-old hosts previously attacked by conspecific and heterospecific wasps. On the other hand, superparasitism and multiparasitism occurred even in host larvae that were parasitized two days earlier. However, once the immature parasitoids hosts are at larval stage (1st and 2nd instar), super- and multiparasitism were avoided in the two-choice test, but the latter often occurred in the multiple-choice experiment. Host discrimination abilities may have been based on plant volatile signals incurred from damaged plants and internal mechanisms from four to seven post-parasitized hosts.

The effects of superparasitism on the size, rate of development, progeny production, sex ratio and percentage parasitism of the parasitoid Pediobius furvus (Gah.) and the number of parasitized hosts producing mature parasitoids were investigated. High parasitoid egg densities in hosts were obtained using two host densities (1 and 2) and three arbitrary parasitoid densities (1, 2 and 5) under two exposure times (12 and 24 h). Superparasitism in P. furvus resulted in a reduction in the number of adults that matured and a reduction in the size and preponderance of male production. Dissections of the parasitized host pupae of the stem borer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) showed no combat among developing wasps. Immature supernumeraries were eliminated by starvation and/or suffocation. The results showed that P. furvus larvae are not harmed by surplus food material in their hosts and that the female parasitoid preferred to lay more eggs into unparasitized than into parasitized host pupae.

One of the foraging decisions facing parasitoids is whetherto accept (superparasitize) or reject hosts that have alreadybeen parasitized. An important distinction is whether the hosthas been parasitized by the female parasitoid herself or bya conspecific. In solitary parasitoids, the pay-off from anegg laid in the latter host type (conspecific superparasitism)is the probability that the second egg wins the competitionfor the host and results in an offspring. The pay-off from anegg laid in the former type (self-superparasitism) increaseswith an increasing probability that another female will superparasitizethe host in the near future. When this probability equals one,self-superparasitism and conspecific superparasitism have thesame payoff. However, conspecific superparasitism will generallyhave a higher pay-off than self-superparasitism. It will thereforebe beneficial for a female parasitoid to be able to distinguishbetween a host she parasitized and one parasitized by a conspecific. The degree of benefit depends on the probability of conspecificsuperparasitism in the near future. Using an optimal diet model,I show that when a parasitoid encounters a patch containinga mixture of unparasitized and already-parasitized hosts, afemale that can distinguish between the two types of parasitizedhosts gains more offspring than a female without this ability. However, when parasitoids search a patch together with conspecifics,it is adaptive to self-superparasitize, and the pay-off fromthis ability may be negligible. It is therefore predicted thatwhen a female parasitoid searches a partially depleted patchalone, it will reject the hosts parasitized by itself more frequentlythan hosts parasitized by conspecifics. In contrast, femaleparasitoids searching together are predicted to accept hoststhat they parasitized themselves much more often. The resultsshow that the solitary parasitoid Leptopilina heterotoma (Hymenoptera:Eucoilidae) is able to distinguish between hosts that it parasitizedand hosts parasitized by conspecifics. The predictions of themodel are met in a second experiment that shows that L. heterotomaself-superparasitizes when the probability of conspecific superparasitismis high.

In solitary parasitoids, superparasitism (the allocation ofan egg to an already parasitized host) has a payoff, measuredin offspring produced and costs, measured in eggs and time invested.Solitary parasitoids that are capable of host discriminationmust adopt the strategy that ensures the best use of both theiregg load and available lifetime. In this paper, we develop astate-dependent model defining the optimal strategy of superparasitismfor a solitary parasitoid species with overlapping generations. The fitness measure we use is based on the growth rate of thenumber of genotype copies. The model predicts that the tendencyto superparasitize should increase as the egg load of the parasitoidincreases, or as its life expectancy decreases. The model alsopredicts that under particular conditions wasps should showpartial preferences for parasitized hosts. These predictionswere tested with the parasitoid Venturia canescens (Hymenoptera:Ichneumonidae). The tendency of the wasps to superparasitizein the presence of both healthy and parasitized hosts was correlatedto egg load and access to food before the experiment A complementaryexperiment, where parasitized hosts were given sequentiallyto parasitoids, showed that V. canescens exhibits partial preferencestoward superparasitism. These experimental results and a previouswork support the predictions of the model.

The oviposition decisions made by insect parasitoids when encountering hosts of variable quality have been the subject of extensive theoretical and experimental investigation. For parasitoids that lay their eggs inside the host, the possible outcomes of encounters with parasitized hosts have been assumed to include only oviposition (superparasitism), rejection, or in some cases feeding on host haemolymph. We document another outcome in Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), a species that has been a model system for the study of oviposition behaviour. In E. formosa, females may kill eggs previously laid within the host by jabbing them with their ovipositor before ovipositing themselves. (1) Our observations indicated that jabbed eggs were indeed killed. (2) In experimental arenas in the laboratory, ovicide occurred in the majority of encounters with parasitized hosts and at highest frequency in encounters resulting in oviposition. (3) There was no significant difference in the handling time associated with oviposition+ovicide in parasitized hosts in comparison with oviposition alone, suggesting that there is no time cost to ovicide. (4) Ovicide did not appear to be incidental to normal probing within a host. Radial analysis of the direction of ovipositor movement with respect to the centre of the previously laid egg within the host showed that females engaged in ovicidal bouts probed most often in the direction of the egg. This is the first well-documented study of ovicide in an endoparasitoid. We suggest ovicide may be under-reported in other endoparasitoid species due to the difficulty of observing it. The bethylidCephalonomia stephanoderis Betrem is an ectoparasitoid that prefers to oviposit on the prepupae and pupae of the coffe berry borerHypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). It has the ability to distinguish unparasitized from parasitized hosts and rarely lays more than one egg per host. The mechanism of this host discrimination byC. stephanoderis was investigated under laboratory conditions. For this, parasitoid eggs that had been deposited on host pupae were removed and pupae were then offered (individually and collectively) to individual female wasps. A total of 92% of individually offered hosts and 93% of collectively offered hosts were not parasitized. It is concluded thatC. stephanoderis recognizes a marking pheromone deposited into or onto the host, preceding, during, or after oviposition which enables female parasitoids to avoid self and conspecific superparasitism.

Superparasitism refers to the oviposition behavior of parasitoid females who lay their eggs in an already parasitized host. This often yields intense competition among larvae that are sharing the same host. Why would a female oviposit in such hostile habitat instead of looking for a better quality, unparasitized host? Here we present a continuous-time model of host-parasitoid interaction and discuss alternative scenarios. This model is first used to analyze the evolution of the superparasitism behavior of a solitary proovigenic parasitoid under both time and egg limitation. Then, following the recent discovery by Varaldi et al., we allow the parasitoid to be infected by a virus that alters the superparasitism behavior of its host to enhance its own horizontal transmission. The analysis of the coevolution of this manipulative behavior with the oviposition behavior of uninfected females clarifies and quantifies the conflict that emerges between the parasitoid and its virus. The model also yields new testable predictions. For example, we expect that uninfected parasitoids should superparasite less after coevolving with the manipulative virus. More generally, this model provides a theoretical framework for analyzing the evolution of the manipulation of parasitoid life-history traits by microparasites.

Fitness consequences of ovicide in a parasitoid wasp
Ovicide, superparasitism and host rejection are alternative reproductive tactics facing female parasitoid wasps encountering an already-parasitized host. Superparasitism is simply the addition of an egg or a clutch of eggs by the secondary parasitoid, but under ovicide the primary clutch is removed or destroyed. Host rejection occurs if the wasp leaves without laying a clutch. The ectoparasitoid Laelius pedatus (Say) (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) performs ovicide in this situation. Clutch manipulation experiments show that secondary clutches suffer high mortality in competition with primary clutches, which increases with increasing time delay between clutches. Primary clutches however suffer little in competition with secondary clutches, even if there is minimal time delay between clutches. These data suggest that the offspring of ovicidal females are substantially fitter than the offspring of superparasitizing females. Handling time and clutch size do not differ significantly between first (sole) parasitoids and second (ovicidal) parasitoids. The same is true for offspring survival and development time. However, offspring of second females are slightly smaller. This suggests that parasitized and unparasitized hosts are resources of similar quality when ovicide is performed. These data strongly support the predictions of evolutionary models of ovicide. They may also give some insight into the taxonomic distribution of ovicide in parasitoids.
