Maturing sub-adults of two species of anguillid eels (a female Anguilla bicolor bicolor and a male Anguilla marmorata ) were collected for the first time at Réunion Island, western Indian Ocean. Both were silver eels, i.e. maturing eels at the onset of their spawning migration, and characterized by advanced sexual maturation that has been only observed in Anguilla dieffenbachii from New Zealand.

It is well established that Anguillid eels undergo a complex suite of morphological and physiological changes during their transformation from resident, yellow-phase juveniles to actively migrating silver-phase eels. While it has been shown that some morphological measures can be used successfully to identify sexually maturing European eels, Anguilla anguilla, as well as Australian short fin, Anguilla australis, and long fin, Anguilla dieffenbachii eels, this relationship has never been quantitatively assessed for American eels, Anguilla rostrata. American eels of varying sexual development were collected from three locations on the St. Lawrence River: Lake St. Lawrence, Quebec City and Kamouraska. Sexual development of each eel was assessed with gonadosomatic index (GSI), oocyte diameter and degree of oocyte development. Morphological measures of total length, weight, head width, pectoral fin length and vertical and horizontal eye diameters were obtained from each fish. We used this data to test two hypotheses: (i) resident yellow phase eels, suspected migrants and known migrants are morphologically indistinguishable; and (ii) if differences exist, they cannot be used to reliably predict gonadal development or migratory status. Univariate analysis (ANOVA and ANCOVA) indicated that there were highly significant differences in all of the measured parameters and thus we were able to reject the first hypothesis. However, we failed to reject the second hypothesis as the high degree of overlap between groups eliminated the ability of any single measure to differentiate between resident and migratory eels. A multivariate discriminant model was developed that could classify only 72–80% of the eels correctly based on their morphological characters. While morphological measures may have some potential as a rapid, cost-effective method of pre-screening individual eels, morphological measures should not be considered a definitive indicator of sexual maturity or migratory status for female American eels in the Upper St. Lawrence River.

Temperate-zone anguillid eels use both saline (marine or brackish) and fresh waters during their continental phase, but use of fresh waters is paradoxical because on average these fishes grow more rapidly in saline than in fresh waters. Based on data from anguillid eels whose habitat-residency histories had been determined by Sr:Ca otolithometry, superiority of growth rates in saline water is much greater in American eels Anguilla rostrata in north-eastern North America (mean saline:fresh growth rate ratio 2·07) than in European Anguilla anguilla , Japanese Anguilla japonica and shortfinned Anguilla australis eels (range of mean ratios 1·12–1·14). Data from A. rostrata in the Hudson Estuary, U.S.A., and Prince Edward Island, Canada, were used to test adaptive explanations of catadromous migrations. The hypothesis that lower mortality in fresh water offsets faster growth in saline water was not supported because loss (mortality + emigration ) rates did not vary between saline and fresh zones of the Hudson Estuary. Hypotheses that anguillid eels move to fresh water to escape from larger anguillid eels in saline water or to evaluate habitat quality were not supported by size and age distributions. Catadromy in temperate-zone anguillid eels increases the diversity of occupied habitats and therefore lowers fitness variance caused by environmental fluctuations. Catadromy in temperate-zone anguillid eels could be due to natural selection for maximum geometric mean fitness which is sensitive to fitness variance. Temperate-zone catadromy might also be maladaptive, at least in local areas, due to shifts over time in selective pressures or to inability of panmictic genetic systems to adapt to local conditions.

The infection status of silver stage eels, Anguilla anguilla , infected with Anguillicola crassus from three locations, ranging from a lake to seawater, were investigated. Data show a significant difference in mean intensity of Anguillicola crassus in silver stage eels according to the salinity of the habitats.

Two morphological characters were examined in 4099 anguillid glass eels sampled in four south-western Indian Ocean islands, and resulting identifications were tested using genetic analysis. Distance between the origin of the dorsal and anal fins as related to total length and tail and caudal fin pigmentation enabled formulation of a useful field identification key, which was able to discriminate 4036 glass eels of the regional species Anguilla bicolor bicolor , Anguilla marmorata and Anguilla mossambica , and excluded the occurrence of Anguilla nebulosa labiata in the sample.

The hypothesis that a part of the yellow American eel Anguilla rostrata sub-population of the St Jean River in eastern Quebec feeds in the brackish environment during summer and returns to the river to overwinter was tested. Three years of microtagging and the acoustic tagging and tracking of 40 American eels demonstrated that a part of the downstream migrants exploited the estuary as a summer feeding area. Upstream movement of some microtagged American eels provided support for the hypothesis that a part of those American eels returned to the river to overwinter. In addition to the demonstration of amphidromous behaviour of yellow eels, the study revealed that American eels in the estuary were active at night but homed to specific daytime resting sites.

Anguilla japonica and Anguilla marmorata share overlapping spawning sites, similar drifting routes, and comparable larval durations. However, they exhibit allopatric geographical distributions in East Asia. To clarify this ecological discrepancy, glass eels from estuaries in Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and China were collected monthly, and the survival rate of A. marmorata under varying water salinities and temperatures was examined. The composition ratio of these 2 eel species showed a significant latitude cline, matching the 24 °C sea surface temperature isotherm in winter. Both species had opposing temperature preferences for recruitment. A. marmorata prefer high water temperatures and die at low water temperatures. In contrast, A. japonica can endure low water temperatures, but their recruitment is inhibited by high water temperatures. Thus, A. japonica glass eels, which mainly spawn in summer, are preferably recruited to Taiwan, China, Korea, and Japan by the Kuroshio and its branch waters in winter. Meanwhile, A. marmorata glass eels, which spawn throughout the year, are mostly screened out in East Asia in areas with low-temperature coastal waters in winter. During summer, the strong northward currents from the South China Sea and Changjiang River discharge markedly block the Kuroshio invasion and thus restrict the approach of A. marmorata glass eels to the coasts of China and Korea. The differences in the preferences of the recruitment temperature for glass eels combined with the availability of oceanic currents shape the real geographic distribution of Anguilla japonica and Anguilla marmorata, making them "temperate" and "tropical" eels, respectively.

A total of 261 individuals of the four tropical eel species, Anguilla celebesensis, Anguilla marmorata, Anguilla bicolor pacifica and Anguilla interioris, were collected from 12 locations around Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, to gain knowledge about the riverine distribution of tropical eels. Anguilla marmorata was predominant in the lower reaches of Poso River (94·4% of total eel catch in the sampling area), Poso Lake (93·3%), three small inlet rivers of Tomini Bay (100%) and Laa River (92·3%). Anguilla celebesensis occurred frequently in the inlet rivers of Poso Lake (63·5%). Anguilla bicolor pacifica and Anguilla interioris were rare (1.5 and 0.4%, respectively). Otolith Sr:Ca ratio electron‐probe micro analysis (EPMA) for individual migratory histories revealed that 15 A. celebesensis caught in Poso Lake and its inlet rivers were categorized into 14 river eels (Sr:Ca < 2·5) showing upstream migration seemingly at their elver stage and only one sea eel (Sr:Ca ≥ 6·0) that stayed in the marine habitat for the majority of its life after recruiting to Sulawesi Island before its late upstream migration. In A. marmorata, 19 examined eels from Poso Lake and its inlet rivers were all river eels, while 17 eels from the lower reaches of Poso River were two river eels, six sea eels and nine estuarine eels (2·5 ≤ Sr:Ca < 6·0) that mostly lived in the brackish water. The sex ratio of A. celebesensis was highly skewed towards a dominance of females (99%). In A. marmorata, females were predominant in Poso Lake (95·2%), its inlet rivers (94·7%) and Laa River (100%), while males were more frequent in the lower reaches of Poso River (76·5%) and small inlet rivers of Tomini Bay (94·1%). These results indicate that the riverine distribution pattern of tropical eels differs among species and between sexes.

Twelve polymorphic dinucelotide microsatellites in the freshwater eel Anguilla anguilla L. were isolated and characterized. Genetic diversity was assessed in eels from Lake Constance, Germany. Allele numbers ranged from five to 26 per locus with observed heterozygosities between 0.125 and 0.875. A portion of locus AangCT77 aligns with a transcribed region of the zebrafish gene crystallin beta B2. Cross-species amplification of most markers was possible for nine other Anguilla eel species. The newly developed primer pairs will facilitate population and conservation genetic studies in order to refine the understanding of the subtle population genetic structure typical of eels, and to identify interspecies admixture due to global trade.

The arrival pattern of glass eels of the shortfin eel Anguilla australis and longfin eel Anguilla dieffenbachii was studied over a two successive migration seasons in the Grey River, South Island, New Zealand. Fishing was carried out on selected nights during September to November, for 3 h per night during 2000 and 2001. The number of shortfin glass eels exceeded longfins in both years; earliest glass eels (September) were larger than later glass eels (November), and longfins larger than shortfins, but there were significant differences in size between years for both species. Environmental variables affecting recruitment differed between years, but common variables for both years were sampling date, time after high tide (incoming tide preferred), time after sunset and moon phase; the influence of moon phase appeared to be expressed both through tides (spring tides preferred) and moonlight. During the year of higher discharge variability, both increasing discharge and increased turbidity were also important.

This study examined the influence of body size and temperature on oxygen consumption and food converstion in juvenile American eels ( Anguilla rostrata ). The weight-specific oxygen consumption rate for underdeveloped eels (18 months old) was significantly higher than the weight-specific oxygen consumption rate of developed eels of the same weight (6 months old). Oxygen consumption rates increased linearly with weight at each experimental temperature (15, 20, 25°C) when data were transformed logarithmically. No significant differences were found among slopes oflog transformed data at varying temperatures. Oxygen consumption was significantly higher at night (2300 h) as compared to morning (0900 h). The results indicate that underdeveloped eels use more energy and use less food less efficiently than developed eels.

We cloned and sequenced the HaeIII 350‐bp 5S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) band of Anguilla rostrata and designed specific primers from this sequence. Polymerase chain reaction performed with these primers is able to distinguish DNA samples obtained from European (Anguilla anguilla) and American (Anguilla rostrata) eels. Two amplicons of 1200 bp and 600 bp were obtained, respectively, from A. rostrata and A. anguilla, and the whole 5S rDNA repeated unit from these eels was cloned and sequenced. Southern blot experiments, using four different restriction enzymes and the 5S nontranscribed spacers regions as probe, are able to point out specific diversity in these eels.

Using otoliths of eels Anguilla anguilla of known and unknown age from fresh, brackish and marine waters, the accuracy of age estimation was uncertain and deviations from the correct age were dependent on reader, locality and fish age.

We studied diel and seasonal movements of 21 radio-tagged shortfinned, Anguilla australis Gray, and longfinned, A. dieffenbachii, eels in two small New Zealand streams. Movements of eels commenced at dusk, with a higher proportion of shortfinned eels moving per night than longfinned eels, and also moving greater distances. Both species often showed extensive movements immediately after tagging, but thereafter movements were limited. In the smaller stream, home ranges averaged 30 and 10m for shortfinned and longfinned eels, respectively, but not all eels were active on every night. There were no seasonal differences in mean distances moved. In both streams, eel movement was almost exclusively bankside, and seldom cross-channel; eels also showed considerable fidelity to a particular bank. Shortfinned eels were most commonly found in runs, and longfinned eels in riffles.

Based on thyroid hormone concentrations and histological criteria, glass eels of Anguilla anguilla caught in the French Atlantic coast in January and November were found to be late metamorphic. The pigmentation of the glass eels was demonstrated to be regulated by thyroid hormones, and evidence is given that together, the end of the progression of pigmentation, a fully developed gut and a change in behaviour marked the end of metamorphosis.

After 1 week, the mortality of European eel Anguilla anguilla after marking glass eels with oxytetracycline (OTC) and alizarin red (ALC), and farm eels with coded wire tags (CWTs) was 0% within all treatments. The suitability of implanting CWTs in the nose region (tag loss 94% after 1 week) and in the dorsal musculature (tag loss 4% after 1 week) was also examined.
