When searching for insects along edges, Barbastella barbastellus alternated between two signal types. Type-2 signals had durations around 6 ms and were composed of an initial shallowly downward frequency modulated component, starting at about 45 kHz and followed by a shorter more steeply modulated component that ended at about 32 kHz. Type-1 signals were rather stereotyped with durations around 2.5 ms and a very short rise time. They covered an approximately 8 kHz-wide frequency band positioned just below the 12-15 kHz-wide frequency band of type-2 signals, with no or small frequency overlap. In the recordings, type-1 signals almost had always a higher amplitude than type-2 signals, at least partly caused by head movements. Assuming that signal structure reflects function, we hypothesize that type-2 signals have the same adaptive value as the signals with a broadband and narrowband component of other vespertilionids, but with a reverse arrangement of the signal elements. Like the broadband component of the type-2 signals, type-1 signals are well suited to localize background targets. Thus, the localization component may be distributed among two signals separated in time, which has the advantage that both signals can be varied independently in the direction of emission and in amplitude.  相似文献

We evaluated the spatial and temporal patterns of roost switching behaviour by a tree-dwelling population of barbastelle bats Barbastella barbastellus in a beech forest of central Italy. Switching behaviour was common to both sexes and did not depend on group size. We observed both individual and group switching, the latter often involving the abandonment of a roost tree on a single night. We suggest that behaviours such as flight activity around roosts or cavity inspection by bats play a role in recruiting group mates and coordinating their occupation of another site. Bats almost never crossed mountain ridges to use roosts located beyond them, possibly because ridges are regarded as boundaries delimiting main roosting areas. The rate of switching was lowest during the middle of the lactation period, probably to minimise problems related to the transportation of non-volant young by their mothers. Although the maintenance of social relationship among bats spread over large forest areas may partly explain the occurrence of roost switching, the persistence of this behaviour in solitary bats and the movement of entire groups best fit the hypothesis that roost switching represents a way to maintain or increase knowledge of alternative roosts.  相似文献

Here we employ multiple approaches (population genetics, past and present predictive modelling) to determine the population structure and the potential distribution in Portugal of the barbastelle, Barbastella barbastellus. Population structure was analysed by sequencing two mitochondrial DNA fragments: cytochrome-b and D-loop. The latter fragment showed almost no variation with only three haplotypes found. In contrast, 13 haplotypes were identified in cytochrome-b sequences although without a significant population structure despite the existence of unique haplotypes in the northern and southern regions. Predictive modelling showed that, under current conditions, the distribution of B. barbastellus is fragmented and highly dependent on the existence of native woodland, with the majority of the suitable areas located in the centre and north of the country, while the predicted occurrence in the south was very restricted. Our bioclimatic models for the Last Glacial Maximum also exhibited a similar pattern which, in agreement with the location of the unique haplotypes, suggests that some degree of isolation has existed between northern and southern populations. Nevertheless, the separation of these populations is not significant in the genetic analysis; hence, Portuguese populations should be managed as a single unit, where the maintenance of the existing mature native woodland is paramount for conservation. In conclusion, this study illustrates how combining genetic analysis with predictive modelling can help in the conservation management of a poorly documented species in a rapid and low-cost manner.  相似文献

The barbastelle (Barbastella barbastellus) is a rare forest bat with a wide distribution in Europe. Here, we combine results from the analysis of two mtDNA fragments with species distribution modelling to determine glacial refugia and postglacial colonization routes. We also investigated whether niche conservatism occurs in this species. Glacial refugia were identified in the three southern European peninsulas: Iberia, Italy and the Balkans. These latter two refugia played a major role in the postglacial colonization process, with their populations expanding to England and central Europe, respectively. Palaeo‐distribution models predicted that suitable climatic conditions existed in the inferred refugia during the last glacial maximum (LGM). Nevertheless, the overlap between the current and the LGM distributions was almost inexistent in Italy and in the Balkans, meaning that B. barbastellus populations were forced to shift range between glacial and interglacial periods, a process that probably caused some local extinctions. In contrast, Iberian populations showed a ‘refugia within refugium’ pattern, with two unconnected areas containing stable populations (populations that subsisted during both glacial and interglacial phases). Moreover, the match between LGM models and the refugial areas determined by molecular analysis supported the hypothesis of niche conservatism in B. barbastellus. We argue that geographic patterns of genetic structuring, altogether with the modelling results, indicate the existence of four management units for conservation: Morocco, Iberia, Italy and UK, and Balkans and central Europe. In addition, all countries sampled possessed unique gene pools, thus stressing the need for the conservation of local populations.  相似文献

The bat ray, Myliobatis californica, is the most common, large predatory fish in Humboldt Bay, California. To prevent bat ray predation on cultured oyster beds, much effort has focused on reducing their population. A 13 month study was conducted in Humboldt Bay to examine the rays' use of the bay, population structure, and feeding ecology. Bat rays are seasonally found in Humboldt Bay during the spring, summer, and early fall months. Adult rays were most abundant during the summer months, while numbers of juveniles increased through the summer and early fall, indicating that Humboldt Bay is an important pupping and nursery ground. Very few rays were found in the bay during the colder months of the year. This decline in abundance is attributed to cooler water temperatures (< 10° C). The stomach contents from 503 bat rays were examined. Overall, clams were the predominant prey item. The index of importance and Shannon-Weiner diversity index indicated that food habits of bat rays change with increasing size. Larger prey items and a wider variety of prey items were consumed as rays increased in size. Dietary importance of small clams and Crangon shrimp decreased with increasing ray size, while the importance of larger prey items (e.g. large clams, Cancer crabs, blue mud shrimp, echiuran worms) increased. Predation on oysters was rare. Differences between the diets of male and female rays of similar sizes were also observed.  相似文献

Diet of wolvesCanis lupus Linnaeus, 1758 in Latvia was studied from 1997 to 2001 based on 302 scats and 107 stomachs. Wild ungulates (cervids and wild boarSus scrofa) and beaverCastor fiber were the dominant prey. Cervids were found in 50% of samples (62% biomass), wild boar in 25% (21% biomass), beavers in 14% (12% biomass). Wolves selected for wild boar, especially in winter when its ratio in the diet increased to 34% from 20% in summer. It was a more common prey species in the east of the country. The ratio of beavers, small rodents and plant food was higher in summer, which resulted in a broader food niche in summer than in winter (B = 2.53 versus 1.81, respectively). The role of domestic animals in the wolf diet was minimal except for winter when they were consumed as carrion (13%). More than 1/3of all stomachs investigated were empty. The average weight of stomach contents was 972.8 g. The importance of the beaver as an alternative prey is discussed. We conclude that wolves in Latvia prey mainly on wild animals and conflicts with livestock owners are only occasional and/or local.  相似文献

Food habits and the basal rate of metabolism in birds   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Brian K. McNab 《Oecologia》1988,77(3):343-349
Summary The correlation of basal rate of metabolism with various factors is examined in birds. Chief among these is body mass. As in mammals, much of the remaining variation in basal rate among birds is associated with food habits. Birds other than passerines that feed on grass, nectar, flying insects, or vertebrates generally have basal rates that are similar to mammals of the same mass and food habits. In contrast, most invertebrate-eating birds that weigh over 100 g have higher basal rates than equally-sized, invertebrate-eating mammals. The high basal rates of small passerines equal those of small mammals that do not enter torpor and represent the minimal cost of continuous endothermy. Large passerines and small procellariiforms, charadriiforms, and psittaciforms generally have higher basal rates than mammals with the same mass and food habits. The high basal rates of passerines (in combination with altricial habits) may have significance in permitting high post-natal growth rates and the exploitation of seasonally abundant resources. These interrelations may contribute to the predominance of passerines in temperate land environments.  相似文献

The food habits of the mudskipper, Pseudapocryptes dentatus (Val.) ranging from 43 to 205 mm in total length collected from the mudflats at Fao estuary, Iraq were studied. A combination of numerical, frequency occurrence and gravimetric methods was used to analyse the stomach contents, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The fish was found to be a strict herbivore and a frequent feeder. It fed solely on phytoplankton dominated by benthic forms. Diatoms were the most important food item in respect of both numerical and frequency occurrence methods comprising about 84% of the total number of phytoplankton organisms. The types of phytoplankton that contributed significantly to the diet were, in decreasing order of importance, Pleurosigma, Navicula, Nitzschia, Synedra, Closteriopsis and Oscillatoria . Larger fish had consumed lesser amount of food, and there was usually a gradual decrease in consumption with increase in size. The mudskipper consumed food ranging from 1·3 to 10·5% of its body weight.  相似文献

Pteronotus personatus as an insectivore bat and has a diet that consists of a high protein diet, whereas the diet of Anoura geoffroyi, a predominantly nectarivore bat, is rich in simple sugars like sucrose, glucose and fructose. Considering that diet influences the activation of different pathways, which may influence morphological adaptations in the gastrointestinal system, the aim of this study was to compare the morphology of the endocrine pancreas in P. personatus and A. geoffroyi. For this, histological, stereological and immunohistochemical methods were used. In P. personatus, the average diameter of the pancreatic islet was 40.47 μm ± 13.94, while in A. geoffroyi was 88.16 μm ± 36.40. The total number of pancreatic islets in P. personatus was 26150 ± 2346 and in A. geoffroyi was 15970 ± 1666. In P. personatus, the volume density of the pancreatic islets was 3.4%± 2.6, whereas in A. geoffroyi the volume density was 6.1% ± 3.7. In addition, the immunodensity of the α, β and δ cells, in P. personatus was 25.8% ± 11.9, 35.5% ± 13.5, 3.9% ± 0.7, respectively, and in A. geoffroyi was 33.10% ± 12.7, 55.08% ± 7.4, 6.2% ± 4.6, respectively. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate differences in the pancreatic weight/body, weight ratio, diameter and volume density of pancreatic islets and in immunodensity of the β and α cells between both species, which have different dietary habits.  相似文献

Food habits of sika deer on the Boso Peninsula, central japan   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The rumen contents of sika deer (Cervus nippon Temminck) on the Boso Peninsula, central Japan, were analyzed to identify local, sexual and age-specific differences in food habits. Graminoids and woody plants were the primary foods throughout the year. In winter, the use of evergreen broad leaves increased. The food habits of sika deer on Boso Peninsula were intermediate between those of populations inhabiting northern and southern Japan. Acorns, mainlyLithocarpus edulis Nakai, were consumed in fall and winter with a peak in October. Since the availability of acorns is not influenced by foraging in previous years, it can be regarded as a stable food supply and hence may be important for deer on the Boso Peninsula. The local difference between the Amatsukominato (AT) area, having a large plantation ofLithocarpus producing acrons, and the Kamogawa-Katsuura (KK) area, having a small plantation ofLithocarpus, was recognized; seeds and fruit were consumed more in AT than in KK in fall and winter. Males consumed more seeds and fruit than females at both sites in fall. This can be attributed to sexual differences in nutritional requirement.  相似文献

In the context of a broader ecological investigation, food habits of giraffe were studied in Tsavo National Park (East). The only method employed was direct observation of feeding animals in the field. Each instance in which one animal fed on one individual plant was counted as one food record for this plant species; 4025 records are analysed. A total of sixty-six plant species was found to be eaten, the great majority being trees and shrubs, with a few creepers and vines. There were marked seasonal differences in the diet of giraffe, deciduous trees, shrubs and vines being dominant in the green season, evergreen plants (partly in riverine forest) in the dry season. All the trees and larger shrubs common in the study area were eaten by giraffe, while few records for very small shrubs and none for herbs and grasses were obtained. An analysis of the available vegetation was made in part of the dry-season habitat, and for twenty species the frequency in the habitat was compared with the frequency in the giraffe's diet, revealing selection for or against certain species. Giraffe utilized the upper vegetation layers, where available, but overall c. 50% of all browsing was below 2 m above ground, i.e. within reach of smaller browsers. Results of this study are compared with what is known on food habits of giraffe in other areas. Possible competition of giraffe with other browsers and the relationship between giraffe and their habitat are discussed. Continued survival of giraffe, and other browsers, in Tsavo National Park depends primarily on (1) adequate control of fire, and (2) the impact of future vegetation changes on the amount and variety of available browse plants.  相似文献

StoatsMustela erminea Linnaeus, 1758 and weaselsMustela nivalis Linnaeus, 1766 exploit the same array of prey species at different frequencies according to body size. The rabbitOryctolagus cuniculus, which typically is the dominant prey for stoats in temperate parts of Europe, is absent in Denmark. The present study based on gastrointestinal tract contents examines the food habits of sympatric stoats (n=112) and weasels (n=132) from Denmark. Rodents were the most important prey group for both stoats and weasels, constituting 77% and 84% of their diet respectively, expressed as frequency of occurrence. No differences were detected in the proportions of major prey groups between sexes within species, but between species the diets differed. Stoats ate birds and birds’ eggs more often than weasels did, while weasels ate more insectivores. Stoats ate more oftenMicrotus voles and water voleArvicola terrestris than weasels did, while weasels ate more bank voleClethrionomys glareolus and moleTalpa europaea. There was a larger dietary overlap between sympatric stoats and weasels in Denmark than in other dietary studies in areas where rabbits were available.  相似文献

Yellowtail flounder, Limanda ferrugunea , were collected from the waters north of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, from April 1971 to January 1972. Cumaceans were the most important food item in the spring. Amphipods and polychaetes, as well as cumaceans, were the main foods consumed in other seasons. Large volumes of plant detritus, sand, and pebbles were present in the stomachs throughout the year. The highest percentage of empty stomachs coincided temporally with the spawning season, although the frequency of occurrence was low at all times. There were no differential food habits by sex or age.  相似文献
