New capacities of roentgen diagnosis in detecting small intestinal pathology

The paper based on the data of more than 200 studies of the small bowel with the new agent Entero-VU specially designed for X-ray study of the bowel gives an objective evaluation of this agent. The authors of the paper analyze the capacities of Entero-VU in diagnosing 38 cases of Crohn's disease, tuberculosis and tumors of the small bowel. Moreover, as a separate section the paper provides an assessment of the agent in mapping the X-ray standards of the small bowel. In the authors' opinion, the use of this agent as though fills the existing gap in the X-ray study of the small bowel.     

Current possibilities of X-ray diagnosis of small intestine diseases using the agent Entero-view

The paper analyzes the current capacities of routine (classical) X-ray study in the diagnosis of organ diseases of the small bowel. The distinctive feature of the paper is that in addition to routine barium passage through the small bowel, the new barium contrast agent Entero-view specially designed for its exploration is used. Of the 115 examined patients with various gastroenterological diseases, 76 underwent Entero-view examination that revealed different organ pathology of the small bowel in 28 cases (Crohn's disease in 18, tuberculosis in 3, lymphomas in 5, and cancer in 2). A normal X-ray pattern of the small bowel was diagnosed in 48 cases. The authors highly appreciate this agent. In their opinion, it is essentially helpful in solving one of the most difficult problems in X-ray gastroenterology--present-day X-ray diagnosis of small bowel pathology. The paper describes a procedure for using this agent. It gives a normal X-ray pattern of the small bowel, the agent's use has provided a particularly vivid image of both a normal part of the ileum and its different organ pathology-associated changes.     

Digital X-ray detection of extrapulmonary pathology during chest screening

The outcomes of digital roentgenography are analysed at screening examinations of members of chest 8000 men: with a pathology lung--83, cardiovascular system--1625, thoracal spine--2034. The outcomes bear to high quality of the image not only lung, but also hearts, aorta, thoracal spin, allow to prefer digital roentgenography of members of a chest as to effective procedure screening of surveys of the population.     

Radiologic diagnosis of malignant lymphoma of the small intestine]

The authors observed 10 patients with malignant lymphoma revealed by x-ray; 2 of them were supposed to be afflicted with heavy alpha-chain disease with malignant transformation. An x-ray picture revealed a triad of pathognomonic symptoms and a regular parallelism of intestinal changes with clinico-laboratory findings. In all the cases the diagnosis was confirmed by morphological data.     

Slow-waves in rat small intestine

Rat small intestine generates rhythmic slow-wave activity. The slow-waves are not eliminated by ouabain application or incubation in potassium free solution. Exposure to low sodium or calcium free solution decreases slow-wave activity. Incubation in sodium and calcium free solution eliminates activity. It is concluded that rat small intestinal slow-waves may not result from the same mechanism as in the cat.     

Ultrastructural localization of calcium, by electron-probe X-ray microanalysis, in the small intestine of suckling rats

The subcellular distribution of calcium has been investigated in samples, from the intestinal mucosa of 10-day rats, prepared for X-ray microanalysis by various techniques designed to minimize the loss of this element. Calcium retention and its threshold of detection was most satisfactory in freeze-dried frozen thin sections. In resin-embedded samples the best retention of calcium was found in specimens fixed in absolute ethanol, embedded without osmication, and sectioned onto glycerol. The results of this investigation indicate the presence of calcium in the supranuclear vacuole of enterocytes in the distal intestine of the neonatal rat. This calcium is probably taken up during the endocytosis of material from the intestinal lumen. The same mechanism may also be important in the uptake of other metals by suckling animals.
