To study the effects of plant density on populations of the cabbage root fly (Erioischia brassicae), cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprout and swede were each planted in plots with twenty-four concentric circles of plants at spacings ranging from 10 to 90 cm between the individual plants. Plants treated with a root drench of chlorfenvinphos and untreated plants were each sampled at ten plant densities which ranged from 1–5 to 68-3 plants/m2. In the absence of insecticide, the numbers of overwintering cabbage root fly pupae produced ranged from c. four per m2 at the lowest plant density to 200 per m2 at the highest. The number of pupae per m2 was proportional to plant density to the powers 0–98,0-77,0–69 and o-6i for the swede, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprout crops, respectively. The magnitude of each cabbage root fly population was determined mainly by plant density but also by the cultivar used as host plant. The results suggested that, in a given locality, when changing from low to high plant density crops during a growing season it should be unnecessary to apply insecticide to control cabbage root fly; conversely, a change from high to low plant densities would necessitate an extremely efficient application of insecticide.  相似文献

In soil inoculated with Pythium ultimum or Pythium irregulare, seed treatment with either Apron 70 (=1 g metalaxyl and 1 g captan/kg seed) or thiram gave control of pre-emergence damping-off of Brussels sprout and cabbage seedlings. On cauliflower, Apron 70 was significantly more effective than thiram. No post-emergence damping-off occurred in either of these crops or in oil-seed rape following seed treatment with Apron 70 whilst post-emergence losses from untreated seed ranged from 10·2–19·4% and from thiram treated seed from 5·7-7·4%. Apron 70 gave complete control of Peronospora parasitica on cauliflower inoculated 10 days after sowing; thiram was ineffective. Following seed treatment with Apron 70, metalaxyl was detected in the cotyledons, true leaves and roots of cabbage seedlings up to 4 wk from sowing.  相似文献

Previous knowledge provided no explanation for the greater prevalence of cauliflower mosaic than of cabbage black ring spot in field crops of cauliflower. Both viruses are spread principally by Myzus persicae and Brevicoryne brassicae , and both are transmitted equally readily from infected seedlings. Cabbage black ring spot virus has a much wider host range, and sap from infected leaves has a higher dilution end-point than sap from leaves infected with cauliflower mosaic virus.
At least part of the difference between the rate at which the two viruses spread in the field may be accounted for by the different manner in which they are distributed in old infected plants, and the effect this has on transmission by aphids. Cauliflower mosaic virus occurs in high concentration in all the new leaves produced by infected plants. Cabbage black ring spot virus, on the other hand, occurs mainly in the older leaves, and even there is localized in parts that show symptoms. Only in recently infected plants does cabbage black ring spot virus occur in young leaves.
After flying, most aphids alight on the upper parts of plants; they are therefore less likely to acquire cabbage black ring spot virus than cauliflower mosaic virus. It may be significant that cabbage, a host in which old leaves are in a more favourable position for alighting aphids than are those of cauliflower, is also often extensively infected with cabbage black ring spot virus.  相似文献

Carrot, cauliflower and radish seedlings raised in sand culture and treated with aqueous suspensions containing chlorfenvinphos, diazinon, iodofenphos or triazophos were planted into the field in 1982 and 1983 to compare the performance against cabbage root fly and carrot fly of these treatments with that of bow-wave applications of granular formulations at sowing. Initial residue concentrations were up to 4100 mg kg-1 in the seedlings at planting. Thereafter the amounts of insecticides per root system declined. Residue concentrations in mature carrot and radish roots were smaller when plants had been treated as seedlings rather than by bow-wave application. Chlorfenvinphos was the most effective insecticide against both pests. Amounts of insecticide applied in transplanted seedlings were < 5% of the amounts applied by the bow-wave method but short-term control of cabbage root fly on radish was similar. Carrot fly damage was reduced by 60% by some of the seedling treatments after 16 wk in 1982 but in 1983 they were less effective. Pot experiments with chlorfenvinphos showed that most of the insecticide in the seedlings was transferred rapidly into the surrounding soil and it was concluded that the bioactivity resulted mainly from uniform distribution of the released insecticide between and around individual plants.  相似文献

Three strains of cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) designated NVRS, CM4-184 and PK caused respectively severe, moderate and mild reactions in turnip cv. Just Right plants and severe, mild and symptomless reactions in Brussels sprout cv. Fasolt plants. Chlorotic local lesions formed consistently in the leaves of young turnip plants when inoculated with each of the virus strains. Lesions were suitable for infectivity assay of crude and purified preparations of the virus. Three variants of the NVRS strain were isolated by single-lesion transfer after treatment of the virus with nitrous acid (pH 5.0) and two variants were obtained after treating the virus in acetate buffer at the same pH. One of the variants (designated V3) caused symptomless infection in turnip and Brussels sprout plants. In cross-protection tests, Brussels sprout plants infected symptomlessly with the PK, CM4-184 or the V3 strains, subsequently resisted infection by the severe NVRS strain.  相似文献

Yellow rocket, Barbarea vulgaris (R. Br.) variety arcuata, was evaluated as a trap crop for diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), in cabbage, Brassica oleracea L. variety capitata, in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, the numbers of P. xylostella larvae found in field plots of cabbage alone were 5.2-11.3 times higher than those on cabbage plants in plots that included cabbage and several rows of yellow rocket. In an outdoor experiment in screenhouses, P. xylostella oviposition on cabbage was compared among six treatments that varied in the percentage of yellow rocket in relation to cabbage (0, 4, 8, 16, 24, and 32% of the plants were yellow rocket). Results indicated that the percentage of eggs laid on cabbage decreased as the percentage of yellow rocket in the treatment increased, but this decrease was not significant beyond 20% of the plants being yellow rocket. In 2004, the numbers of P. xylostella larvae in field plots of cabbage alone were 1.6-2.4 and 1.7-2.8 times higher than numbers in treatments with 10 and 20% trap crop, respectively. Sticky trap and sweep net captures of P. xylostella adults indicated that within-field dispersal was reduced by the presence of yellow rocket and aggregation occurred around yellow rocket plants. Our study suggests that using yellow rocket as a trap crop may reduce P. xylostella infestations in cabbage fields, and this possibility is discussed in the context of general crop and insect pest management practices in crucifers.  相似文献

Electron microscopy of infected D. stramonium cells showed that the virus particles occurred in the cytoplasm. Particles were mostly bacilliform and measured 297 ± 18 times 64 ± 4 nm. In negatively stained leaf homogenates, particles were mostly disrupted; intact particles measured 267 ± 20 times 69 ± 6 nm. In brussels-sprout cells containing BNYV and CIMV, BNYV particles were rarely found compared with those of CIMV, and they occurred within and near CIMV inclusion bodies. BNYV particles were also found in extracts of virus-carrying Brevicoryne brassicae. Broccoli necrotic yellows (BNYV) and cauliflower mosaic (CIMV) viruses occurred together in naturally infected Brussels sprout plants, which showed conspicuous symptoms, and in cauliflower. BNYV was transmitted to and maintained in Datura stramonium and Hyoscyamus niger. It was partially purified from D. stramonium. Using these preparations, from which inhibitor had been removed, BNYV was manually transmitted to cauliflower, causing mild symptoms, and to Brussels sprout, causing a symptomless infection. BNYV also infected Sinapis alba but not cabbage, lettuce, Sonchus oleraceus or Plantago major. BNYV was transmitted by Brevicoryne brassicae but not by Myzus persicae, Hyperomyzus lactucae or Aleyrodes proletella.  相似文献

We studied the effect of different host plants and rearing atmosphere on life cycle of cabbage butterfly, Pieris brassicae. Insects were reared in the field (fluctuating weather) as well as in the laboratory (constant rearing conditions) on four host plants, viz. cabbage, cauliflower, knol-khol and broccoli. Significant differences were not found in the incubation and pupal period of butterfly reared on different host plants. However, larval period was found to be significantly lower on cabbage followed by knol-khol and highest on broccoli. Therefore, the developmental period (from eggs to adult) was reasonably lower on cabbage. Furthermore, inverse relationship was found in the body weight of butterfly and developmental period, where weight of full grown caterpillar and pupae was significantly higher on cauliflower and lowest on cabbage. Besides, significant differences were not found in the body weight of P. brassicae caterpillar reared under field and in the laboratory. Nevertheless, pupal weight of butterfly was significantly higher under field conditions than the laboratory conditions. Overall, the development of P. brassicae was much faster on cabbage than other hosts; but its body weight was considerably higher on cauliflower.  相似文献

Food webs are overlaid with infochemical webs that mediate direct and indirect interactions. Behavioural ecologists have extensively documented that carnivorous arthropods exploit herbivore-induced plant volatiles during foraging for herbivorous arthropods. Most studies on the role of infochemicals in multitrophic interactions have been conducted against an odour-free background, although field studies show that carnivores also use herbivore-induced plant volatiles under more complex conditions. Here we investigated the effect of mixing the blends of volatiles emitted by two plant species on the foraging behaviour of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis . This was done in an olfactometer under laboratory conditions and in a semi-field setup under greenhouse conditions. The olfactometer setup ensured directed mixing of the two odour blends, while odour mixing in the greenhouse setup was much less controlled and resulted from diffusion. In 4 out of 5 olfactometer experiments the behaviour towards volatiles from spider-mite ( Tetranychus urticae ) infested Lima bean plants was not affected by mixing with volatiles from caterpillar ( Pieris brassicae ) infested Brussels sprouts plants. In the fifth olfactometer experiment the response shifted significantly towards the volatiles from infested Lima bean leaves without volatiles from infested cabbage leaves. In the greenhouse setup no effect of infested cabbage plants or their volatiles on the location of spider-mite infested bean plants was recorded. The two odour blends used in this study, i.e. those from spider-mite infested Lima bean leaves and from caterpillar-infested Brussels sprouts plants, are very different and there is no overlap in compounds that are known to attract the predators. The results are discussed in the context of other types of odour-blend mixing and the effects on food web interactions.  相似文献

Experiments were made on field plots with four soil partial sterilants applied at different dose rates or as combination treatments. The effects of treatments on clubroot were assessed by growing cabbages on the field plots or in a glasshouse in soil removed from the plots. In two experiments, no plants grown on plots or seedlings grown in soil samples from plots treated with Dowfume M.C.2 or Telone were infected with clubroot, whilst only one infected seedling was found in soil samples from those plots treated with chloropicrin. Although relatively few infected plants were recovered from Basamid treated plots, many infected seedlings were found in soil samples from those plots. The effectiveness of these treatments as indicated by seedling survival was Dowfume M.C.2 < chloropicrin < Telone < Basamid. At five sites a combination of Dowfume M.C.2 at 98 g/m2 with 40 g/m2 Basamid resulted in all cabbage seedlings grown in soil samples being disease free.  相似文献

Vapour components emanating from disrupted cauliflower, turnip, radish, wallflower and brown mustard tissue were assessed for their effects on the cabbage root fly (Delia brassicae). Of about 20 vapour components detected and separated by gas chromatography, six elicited sufficiently large electroantennal responses to warrant further testing, but of these only allyl isothiocyanate and hexyl acetate markedly affected the behaviour of gravid flies in an olfactometer. In wind-tunnel tests at a wind speed of 1–2-1-7 m/s, the numbers of females caught was increased when allyl isothiocyanate vapour was released at 32–130 mg/h but decreased at higher evaporation rates. The only effect of hexyl acetate vapour released at 40–140 mg/h was a reduction in the numbers caught at the highest concentration. In a cabbage crop, yellow water traps fitted with allyl isothiocyanate sources, each evaporating 2–3 g/day, caught 11 times as many female and seven times as many male flies as unmodified traps during the early period of the third generation but the improvement in trap efficiency later diminished. Trap efficiency was slightly reduced when the rate of evaporation of allyl isothiocyanate from a trap was decreased from 2–3 to 0–51 g/day. On fallow ground, allyl isothiocyanate improved trap performance in catching female flies by about seven-fold, but along a hedgerow adjacent to Brussels sprouts the improvement was barely two-fold. Hexyl acetate did not improve the performance of traps in a cabbage crop.  相似文献

Plant–insect interactions occur in spatially heterogeneous habitats. Understanding how such interactions shape density distributions of herbivores requires knowledge on how variation in plant traits (e.g. nutritional quality) affects herbivore abundance through, for example, affecting movement rates and aggregation behaviour. We studied the effects of plant patch size and herbivore-induced differences in plant nutritional quality on local densities of insect herbivores for two Brassica oleracea cultivars, i.e. white cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Early season herbivory as a treatment resulted in measurable differences in glucosinolate concentrations in both cultivars throughout the season. Herbivore induction and patch size both influenced community composition of herbivores in both cultivars, but the effects differed between species. Flea beetles (Phyllotreta spp.) were more abundant in large than in small patches, and this patch response was more pronounced on white cabbage than on Brussels sprouts. Herbivore-induction increased densities in all patches. Thrips tabaci was also more abundant in large patches and densities of this species were higher on Brussels sprouts than on white cabbage. Thrips densities were lower on induced than on control plants of both cultivars and this negative effect of induction tended to be more pronounced in large than in small patches. Densities of the cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae) were lower on Brussels sprouts than on white cabbage and lower on herbivore-induced than on uninduced plants, with no effect of patch size. No clear effects of patch size and induction were found for aphids. This study shows that constitutive and herbivore-induced differences in plant traits interact with patch responses of insect herbivores.  相似文献

To determine the importance of beetle predators on the natural control of cabbage root fly, experiments were carried out in 1958 and 1959 using various types of barriers to obtain different levels of beetle populations on cauliflower plots. A barrier of DDT-treated straw, placed in the soil around some plots, decreased the numbers of beetles within them and allowed a greater number of eggs and larvae of cabbage root fly to survive than on the untreated plots, resulting in a greater crop damage. Another type of barrier allowed the beetles to enter plots but made it difficult for them to leave. On these, fewer cabbage root-fly eggs and larvae survived and the crop damage was much less than on the plots surrounded by straw barriers. Where plants were treated with insecticide the root-fly population was reduced to a minimum and crop yields were considerably increased. The insecticide, however, caused a reduction in the numbers of predatory beetles.  相似文献

将SRAP与ISSR 2种分子标记技术应用于8种甘蓝类植物(Brassica oleracea L.)的种子鉴别中。先以甘蓝(Brassica oleracea var. capitata)基因组DNA为模板,通过对SRAP、ISSR反应体系中各影响因素的逐一筛选,优化了甘蓝类植物SRAP、ISSR反应体系。进而采用30个SRAP引物组合和15个ISSR引物对白甘蓝、皱叶甘蓝、红甘蓝、羽衣甘蓝、花椰菜、青花菜、抱子甘蓝、球茎甘蓝的基因组DNA进行了PCR扩增,结果表明:M3E5与M4E5两个SRAP引物组合可以在8种甘蓝类植物之间显示较高的多态性;844和888两个ISSR引物也可在8种甘蓝类植物之间产生很好的多态,特别是844引物单独应用即可区分所有材料。  相似文献

First-generation cabbage maggot, Delia radicum (L.) (Diptera: Anthomyiidae), can cause extensive damage to newly transplanted brassica crops. This study investigated the use of relay cropping, a form of intercropping that involves overlapping two crops in the same field for a short period, as a means to 1) reduce first-generation D. radicum egg numbers by disrupting female host finding and 2) minimize yield loss by reducing the time that crops overlap. Because of the high incidence of two other Delia species, Delia platura (Meigen) and Delia florilega (Zetterstedt), treatment effects on these insects also were considered. In both years of the study (2003 and 2004), there were fewer D. radicum eggs collected from the base of cauliflower, Brassica oleracea variety botrytis, plants relay cropped with lettuce, Lactuca sativa L., than in monoculture. D. platura/D. florilega also laid fewer eggs on cauliflower in the relay crop than in monoculture in 2003, but in 2004 the opposite was true, there were more D. platura/D. florilega eggs laid on the relay-cropped cauliflower. After peak D. radicum oviposition, the lettuce was harvested. Cauliflower curd weights and diameters were comparable between treatments in both years. Plant loss because of D. platura/ D. florilega feeding in the 2004 relay-cropped plots resulted in reduced yields in these plots compared with the monoculture. Although further investigation is needed into the effects of relay cropping on other pests within this system, this is the first study to demonstrate that relay cropping can reduce egg laying by D. radicum at the scale studied while minimizing competition between component crops for key resources.  相似文献

In the present study, we investigated whether growth and main nutrient ion concentrations of cabbage (Brassica campestris L.) could be increased when plants were subjected to different NH4+/NO3- ratios. Cabbage seedlings The results showed that cabbage growth was reduced by 87% when the proportion of NH4+-N in the nutrient solution was more than 75% compared with a ratio NH4+/NO3- of 0.5:0.5 35 d after transplanting, suggesting a possible toxicity seedling weight, root length, and H2PO4- (P), K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ concentrations were all higher than those in plants 0.5 NH4+/NO3-. The present results indicate that an appropriate NH4+/NO3- ratio improves the absorption of other nutrients and maintains a suitable proportion of N assimilation and storage that should benefit plant growth and the quality of cabbage as a vegetable.  相似文献

The relative resistance and susceptibility of various cruciferous plants to swede midge, Contarinia nasturtii (Kieffer) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), damage was investigated to provide growers with planting recommendations and to identify potential sources of resistance to the swede midge. Broccoli cultivars experienced more severe damage than cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. The broccoli 'Paragon', 'Eureka', and 'Packman' are highly susceptible to the swede midge, whereas 'Triathlon' and 'Regal' showed reduced susceptibility to damage and slower development of damage symptoms. No differences were found between normal and red cultivars of cabbage and cauliflower in damage severity and progression of damage symptoms. Four new plant species (Brassica juncea Integlifolia group, Erucastrum gallicum (Willd.) O. E. Shulz., Lepidium campestre (L.) R.Br., and Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medic.) are reported as hosts of the swede midge. The weed species Descurainia sophia (L.) Webb, Camelina microcarpa Andrz. ex Dc., and Erysimum cheiranthoides L. exhibited no damage symptoms, and they seem to be nonhost crucifers for the swede midge.  相似文献

A water-soluble germination- and growth-inhibitor present in plants of Brassica genus was studied. Aqueous eluates from chromatograms of methanolic extracts of Savoy cabbage, cabbage and Brussels’ sprouts leaves, and of Brussels’ sprouts roots, inhibited the growth of wheat; the chromatographic behaviour of this inhibitor was similar to that of the thioglycoside glucobrassicin (GLUBR). GLUBRat 10-3 m, and the supposed product of its enzymatic degradation, 3-indolylacetonitrile (IAN) at 10-4 m, inhibited the growth of wheat and clover in a similar manner. At lower concentrations, both substances gradually enhanced growth. In contrast to IAN, GLUBR did not appreciably influence the growth of Savoy cabbage. Other products of GLUBR degradation, such as thiocyanate ion and ascorbigen, influenced the growth to a lesser extent and in a different way. At higher concentrations GLUBR and IAN also inhibited the germination of clover seeds. The biological effect of GLUBR is dependent on the presence of the indole nucleus in its molecule; the thioglycoside glucoiberin, which is not of indolic character, does not influence growth. The presence of free myrosinase was shown in intact wheat seedlings. Hence, GLUBR taken in by the germinating plants must undergo enzymatic cleavage. The in vitro activity of myrosinase in wheat and clover was lower than in Savoy cabbage, but the quantity of IAN formed at a pH corresponding to the natural pH was higher in wheat and clover than in Savoy cabbage, where the formation of the growth-inactive ascorbigen prevailed. On the basis of these results the hypothesis was formulated that GLUBR, the indolic complex from the generaBrassica, Raphanus, Cochleria, Nasturtium, Barbarea andSisymbrium, is a representative of a class of potential inhibitors of growth and germination, whose activity can be explained by the liberation of large amounts of growth-affecting substances during their specific enzymatic cleavage.  相似文献
