Ovarian activity and uterine involution were monitored by rectal palpation, oestrus detection and plasma progesterone analysis from 3 to 4 days to approximately 150 days post partum in 38 suckled swamp buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis). The intervals from parturition to regression of the corpus luteum (CL) of pregnancy and involution of the uterus were 10 and 28 ± 6 (S.D.) days respectively. First detected oestrus and first elevation of plasma progesterone (> 0.7 ng/ml) occurred at 88 ± 26 and 96 ± 22 days in 8 and 12 buffaloes respectively. During the first 150 days post partum, 26 of 38 suckling buffaloes (68%) were acyclic (anoestrus) and of 12 animals (32%) exhibiting ovarian cycles, 4 were not detected in oestrus. The tentative diagnosis, based on rectal palpation, that CL were present between days 30 and 90 after parturition (without concurrent luteal levels of progesterone in plasma) suggests that confirmation should be by laparoscopy. It is concluded that a delay in the resumption of ovarian cyclicity post partum represents an important factor contributing to the prolonged calving to conception interval in the suckled swamp buffalo.  相似文献

Three cross-bred cows calved in March and April and were followed until day 62 after parturition. Each animal was suckled by 2 calves ad libitum. All calves were removed from the cows on day 55 after parturition. Blood was collected 3 times per day from the jugular vein by venipuncture. On 4 occasions after parturition - i.e. days 7–8, 21–22, 35–36 and 49–50, the cows were bled through a jugular venous catheter every 30 min during the 24 h. The plasma samples were analyzed for the content of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF2α (main PGF2α metabolite), LH, prolactin, Cortisol and progesterone by radioimmunoassay methods. The concentration of PGF2α increased from 280 to 730 pmol/1 within the last 4 days before parturition. The highest geometric mean was 3106 pmol/1 on the day of parturition. Thereafter a steady decrease of PGF2α metabolite concentration was seen until day 21 when it reached plateau at 148 pmo/1. In all cows plasma LH concentrations increased significantly (P<0.05) from about 1.6 µg/l on days 7–8 to 2.4 µg/1 on days 21–22 post partum. The frequency of LH pulses showed no tendency to increase as the postpartum period progressed and averaged 6.5 pulses/24 h. Mean plasma LH concentrations increased from 2.1 µg/l 2 days before weaning to 3.2 µg/l 2 days after weaning (P<0.05). LH peaks occurred less frequently in association with prolactin and Cortisol peaks than in their absence. A partial positive correlation between PGF2α metabolite and Cortisol (r = 0.30) was found on days 7–8 post partum. Correlation between prolactin and Cortisol on days 7–8 and 21–22 post partum was also positive (r = 0.20 and r = 0.27, respectively). There was a negative correlation between LH and Cortisol on days 7–8 (r = −0.27) and days 49–50 (r = −0.21) post partum. The first and short progesterone increase observed after weaning was terminated in conjuction with PGF2α metabolite peaks.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of lutein cells during pregnancy and the post partum period was examined by transmission electron microscopy in the house musk shrew, Suncus murinus. Lutein cells on day 13 of pregnancy contained an extensive system of anastomosing tubules or cisternae of smooth ER and many enlarged mitochondria with numerous tubulovesicular cristae. From day 13 on, the number of small granules, possibly lysosomes, increased gradually. Between day 20 and 25, the loss of smooth ER began and elongated, or flattened mitochondria increased. Regressing lutein cells observed after parturition were characterized by abundant large dense bodies, bizarre mitochondria and a decrease in the amount of smooth ER. Unusual forms of mitochondria were always observed after day 5 of pregnancy. Two types could be distinguished; one, found frequently in the second third of pregnancy, was ring-, disc-, cup-or dumb-bell-shaped with tubulovesicular cristae, and the other, found exclusively in the last third of pregnancy and after parturition, was elongated, flattened and sometimes twisted. The paucity of lipid droplets was a characteristic feature of the lutein cells of this species. The significance of these ultrastructural changes of cellular organelles is discussed in relation to the ovarian and plasma levels of progesterone.  相似文献

The post-partum reproductive performance of suckled and non-suckled Afrikaner cows was compared in order to assess the importance of suckling in the resumption of post-partum ovarian function in this breed. Non-suckled cows were weaned at 3 days post partum whilst calves in the control group had continuous access to their dams. Commencement of ovarian activity was significantly (P < 0.01) earlier in non-suckled cows at 18.1 ± 5.2 (mean ± SD) days post partum than in suckled cows 53.2 ± 19.7 days. Conception rates were significantly higher (P = 0.01) in non-suckled cows (80%) than in suckled cows (50%). Mean intervals from parturition to conception were 45.8 ± 15.8 (mean ± SD) days in non-suckled cows as compared with 70.9 ± 17.9 days in suckled cows. The conception rate associated with each ovulation appears to be highest between 50 and 70 days post partum regardless of the degree of suckling stimulus. Four classes of ovarian activity were recorded from the progesterone profiles compiled. The incidence of short cycles was unaffected by the degree of suckling stimulus. Weaning may (P = 0.05) reduce the proportion of cows which exhibit regular cyclic ovarian activity without conceiving. Coitus during oestrus may (0.01 < P > 0.05) be more easily observed in non-suckled cows than in their suckled contemporaries. Suckling altered the diurnal distribution of coitus, with non-suckled cows showing the highest frequency for this component of oestrus before 09.00 h and after 15.00 h, whilst in suckled cows coitus appeared to be more evenly distributed throughout the day.  相似文献

The onset of post partum ovarian activity, the number of artificial inseminations (AI) and the time of conception were monitored in 412 Icelandic dairy cows during a period of 3 years. Blood was sampled from the animals at various times after calving and the serum concentration of glucoce, urea, calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) measured. A significant positive correlation was found between the levels of glucose, urea and Ca and the number of days from calving. A significant negative correlation was found between the level of urea and the time of first post partum ovulation. A significant positive correlation was found between the level of glucose and the time of conception. No correlation was found between the blood parameters and the number of AI per animal, the length of first post partum ovarian cycle or the ammount of progesterone found during that cycle. A distinct, although not statistically significant, tendency towards a negative correlation between the level of glucose and the time of first post partum ovulation was found. Our results show that the levels of glucose and urea shortly after parturition do indicate the time of onset of post partum ovarian cyclicity. Our findings indicate that low blood glucose and urea values early post partum lead to subclinical or clinical ketosis which can considerably delay the onset of ovarian activity.  相似文献

The activities of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, ATP citrate-lyase and fatty acid synthetase remained low until parturition at 22 days of gestation and increased significantly within 1 day post partum. Administration of progesterone on days 20 and 21 and at parturition abolished the increases for at least 48 h after parturition. Removal of the pups of normal rats prevented the increases in activities of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and ATP citrate-lyase, but not of fatty acid synthetase, and administration of prolactin corticosterone or insulin did not stimulate activity. Tissue from suckled glands in which the ducts had been ligated at parturition showed no increase in the activities of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and ATP citrate-lyase within 24 h, whereas fatty acid synthetase activity was similar to that in the sham-operated contralateral glands. Foetoplacentectomy on day 18 increased the activity of fatty acid synthetase but not of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and ATP citrate-lyase; suckling of these dams by foster pups increased both acetyl-CoA carboxylase and ATP citrate-lyase.  相似文献

Five pony mares were blood sampled during late pregnancy, foaling and early lactation. An homologous assay for horse prolactin was used to measure plasma prolactin concentrations in these samples. Regular estimates of cyclic activity were also made. Plasma prolactin concentrations rose markedly in the last week of pregnancy and remained high although variable in early lactation, before declining to basal levels by 1-2 months post partum. All mares showed a post-partum oestrus 7.0 +/- 0.9 days after parturition. One mare whose foal died shortly after birth showed a rapid decline in plasma prolactin values after death of the foal and an early oestrous period (4 days after parturition). The pattern of prolactin changes reported for the mare are in agreement with those reported for other mammalian species.  相似文献

Doses of 125, 250 or 500 micrograms LH-RH were injected i.m. into suckled beef cows on approximately Day 11 of an oestrous cycle synchronized by prostaglandin treatment. There was a positive linear relationship between dose of LH-RH and the area under the measured LH peak. Administration of 500 micrograms LH-RH as a single injection to suckled cows 13-32 days post partum resulted in LH release but failed to induce normal ovarian activity. A small transient rise in plasma progesterone for 6--9 days occurred at the expected time after injection in 50% of animals. Administration of 500 micrograms LH-RH to suckled beef cows approximately 20--30 days post partum and a second injection approximately 10 days later at the time when the resulting transient rise in plasma progesterone had returned to basal values induced normal cyclic activity (as shown by progesterone concentrations and observed oestrus) at 35 days compared with 70 days for untreated controls. Pituitary responsiveness to LH-RH, as assessed by LH levels, was found to increase up to 20 days post partum.  相似文献

GnRH (250 μg) was administered intravenously in a total of 121 experiments carried out on 21 cows during the period from 180 days ante (ap) to 50 days post partum (pp). Additionally in one group of animals prolactin secretion was inhibited after parturition by means of 3 intramuscular injections of 150 mg Bromocryptine (CB-154) on days 1, 4 and 7 pp. LH response (peak height, area under the dose response curve) was about the same from 150 to 60 days ap, then decreased significantly towards parturition and was lowest during the first 6 days post partum. At a later time the Lh response was more pronounced than during pregnancy. The FSH response decreased significantly during the last 9 days ap, remained low during the frist 6 days pp and increased thereafter. There was no significant influence of prolactin inhibition on LH and FSH values (except for the total FSH released on day 50 pp). Whereas in all GnRH treated animals pronounced pituitary gonadotropin responsiveness was measurable (except during the period around parturition), the variation of the LH response pp was much higher than ap. The LH results gave some indication of the wide range of response pattern for this hormone after parturition which might be one reason for the individuality in the initiation of a new estrous cycle post partum in cattle.  相似文献

Sexual behaviour of 16 female and 12 male rabbits was studied during pregnancy and early post partum. The main behavioural events of the male (nuzzling and mounting) did not differ in the presence of receptive or non-receptive females. When introduced into the cage of the male, receptive and non-receptive females flattened to the floor or circled around. Sexual receptivity to males decreased in early pregnancy and increased to a maximum a few days around parturition; on Days 1 and 6 post partum, all experimental rabbits submitted to mating. Two groups of females were distinguished: one group submitting to mating whatever the stage of pregnancy, the second being receptive only during the few days before parturition or post partum. During pregnancy and early post partum there was no relation between the colour of the vulva and the female sexual behaviour. Does remained sexually receptive even when progesterone concentrations were high. Nevertheless, the number of receptive females was higher when progesterone concentrations decreased around parturition and the mean daily progesterone values were consistently higher in non-receptive than in receptive females. Oestrogen concentrations during pregnancy were very low and were not related to receptive behaviour.  相似文献

Studies were carried out to determine the time of appearance, frequency, titre and specificity of lymphocytotoxic antibodies in the plasma of parous Hereford cattle. Cytotoxic antibody was first detected in a small proportion (3/62 = 4.8%) of primigravid cattle during the last third of pregnancy. Titres were low (neat or 1 in 2) at this time and decreased in one animal so that antibodies were not detectable in samples obtained on the day of calving or 9 days beforehand. Following parturition, the proportion of primiparous cattle producing lymphocytotoxic antibodies increased markedly and reached a maximum value (8/19 = 42.1%) during the third month post partum. Antibody levels also rose over the same period. An increase in the parity of the dam also resulted in an increase in the proportion of cattle with lymphocytotoxic plasma. These antibodies appeared earlier in pregnancy, were at a higher titre and had a wider specificity than those found in primigravida. Non-foetally stimulated antibody was detected in 4 cattle. In one plasma sample, lymphocytotoxic activity was present prior to mating, and in the 3 others it was not directed against cells from either the bull to which the dam was mated or the calf produced by the sire and dam.  相似文献

The activities of two groups of peptidases separated from a homogenate of rabbit hypothalamus were determined (a) in adult female animals, (b) in ovariectomized animals and (c) in intact female animals after injection of oestradiol monobenzoate (15-120mug.). 2. Ovariectomy decreased the enzyme activity initially; the activity in the particulate group of enzymes subsequently returned to normal whereas the activity of the supernatant fraction was less than normal 8 months after operation. 3. Injection of oestradiol monobenzoate increased the enzyme activity in the supernatant fraction to that observed in pregnant animals and in suckled lactating animals. 4. There is a correlation between changes in enzyme activity of the supernatant fraction and conditions that are known to influence gonadotrophin secretion.  相似文献

Multiparous pregnant gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) were housed with or without male mates following parturition. Six of seven litters in the ‘male-present’ condition were found dead by the third day post partum; these females showed very little maternal behaviour. Six of seven litters in the ‘nomale’ condition were successfully reared through 9 days of observation; these females showed consistently high rates of maternal behaviour. Cannibalism was rare in both conditions, the majority of pup-deaths resulting from neglect. It appears that the presence of the male disrupts maternal behaviour, resulting in neglect of the pups and pup-mortality. The male's presence may interfere with the effective space, or ‘territory’, necessary to the female for the display of appropriate maternal behaviour.  相似文献

In rats, late prenatal and/or early postnatal zinc deficiency results in behavioural anomalies in adult animals, but not in overt dysmorphogenesis of the central nervous system. Cerebellar and hippocampal development occurs mainly in the first three weeks postnatally and zinc accumulates specifically in the mossy fibres of the hippocampus during this period.In the present investigation, rat pups were suckled by dams fed a zinc-deficient (<0.5 mg/kg) diet either from day 19 of pregnancy or from parturition. Control animals were restricted-fed the same diet supplemented with 100 mg zinc/kg. Studies were performed on pups either on day 18 postpartum in the case of animals fed the experimental diets from parturition, or on day 20 for pups which received treatment from day 19 of gestation.Cerebellar and hippocampal weights were lower in pups suckling from zinc-deficient dams but zinc levels were not affected in either organ, although histological evidence suggested less zinc in the hippocampal mossy fibres. Incorporation of H-thymidine into cerebellar and hippocampal DNA was not affected by maternal zinc status, nor was the activity of the zinc metalloenzyme alkaline phosphatase.The activity of the myelin-marker enzyme 2′, 3′-cyclic nucleotide 3′-phosphohydrolase was substantially lower in both regions of the brain in zinc deprived pups, especially in the hippocampus. Activity of the zinc metalloenzyme L-glutamic acid dehydrogenase was also diminished in both tissues from 20-day-old pups and in the hippocampi of 18-day-old animals.The data suggest that cerebellar and hippocampal DNA synthesis is not seriously affected by late prenatal and/or early postnatal zinc depletion, but that the activities of two enzymes associated with neural function are. The possibility is raised that these defects may be associated with the behavioural changes observed in rats subjected to zinc impoverishment during the period of maximal cerebellar and the hippocampal development.  相似文献

This experiment was designed to determine 1) if exposure of firstcalf suckled beef cows to mature bulls in the first 30 days, after 30 days, or continuously post partum reduces the postpartum anestrous period and 2) if exposure to bulls alters the first service pregnancy rate. Postpartum first-calf suckled crossbred (Angus x Hereford; Hereford x Angus) cows were randomly assigned to be 1) exposed continuously to mature, epididectomized bulls (BE; n = 18); 2) exposed to bulls for the first 30 days post partum (BE/NE; n = 17); 3) exposed to bulls after the first 30 days post partum (NE/BE; n = 16); or not exposed to bulls (NE; n = 18). Blood samples were collected weekly to be assayed for progesterone to determine resumption of ovarian cyclic activity. All the cows were bred for 21 days by AI while under their respective treatment regimens and were then exposed to fertile bulls for an additional 35 days. The postpartum interval to resumption of ovarian cyclic activity did not differ (P>0.10) among the 3 (BE, BE/NE, and NE/BE) treatment groups, but it was 15.4 d shorter (P<0.05) than for cows in the NE group. The overall pregnancy rates did not differ (P>0.10) among the treatment groups. The AI pregnancy rates for the BE/NE and NE/BE treatment groups were higher (P<0.05) than for the NE group. The AI pregnancy rates for the BE and NE treatment groups did not differ (P>0.10). The results showed that all three treatments (BE, BE/NE and NE/BE) similarly decrease the postpartum interval and that exposure to bulls may improve the reproductive performance of first-calf suckled beef cows.  相似文献

The variations in lipid metabolism according to the physiological stage and their relationship to the resumption of postpartum ovarian cyclicity were assessed in Limousine beef cows fed a grass diet over 3 yr. Weekly blood samples were collected from 59 cows beginning 10 wk before to 20 wk after calving to evaluate serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations and electrophoretic lipoprotein fractions. After parturition, progesterone concentrations were also measured at weekly intervals to determine time of resumption of ovulation. Cows were categorized by resumption of postpartum ovarian cyclicity into 3 groups: early (4 to 6 wk post partum, n = 36); mid (7 to 10 wk post partum, n = 46) and late (after 11 wk post partum, n = 38). Higher serum triglyceride values (P<0.05) were observed during the last 10 wk of pregnancy (0.36+/-0.15 g/L) than during the first 20 wk of suckling (0.29+/-0.09 g/L). Cholesterol values decreased significantly (P<0.05) at the end of pregnancy, were minimal (1.01+/-0.03 g/L) at parturition, and increased again up to 9 wk post calving. Increased cholesterolemia and low serum triglyceride values after calving could be linked to the increased bovine alpha-lipoprotein fraction and decreased beta fraction. Serum triglyceride concentrations were not related to the resumption of postpartum ovarian cyclicity. Higher serum cholesterol values were observed from 2 wk before to 4 wk after calving in cows with early rather than mid and late resumption of ovarian cyclicity. Therefore, modifications in lipid metabolism during the puerperium seem to be related to resumption of cyclicity during the early postpartum period.  相似文献

The rate of fatty acid synthesis from [6-14C]glucose in mammary tissue remained low until parturition at 22 days of gestation and increased 10-fold at 1 day post partum. Administration of progesterone on days 20 and 21 or removal of pups at parturition abolished this increase. In the latter case, administration of prolactin, corticosterone or oxytocin had no stimulatory effect; tissue from suckled glands in which the ducts had been ligated at parturition also showed no increased rate in 24 h. Foetoplacentectomy on day 18 did not stimulate fatty acid synthesis but subsequent suckling by foster pups did. Whereas lactose synthesis is initiated by withdrawal of progesterone from the circulation, a further stimulus related to removal of milk by suckling is required to initiate fatty acid synthesis.  相似文献

Two female African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) in a pack of 10 animals at the Bronx Zoo gave birth to litters of nine and seven pups within a 2‐day period. Two pups from the litter of seven died before they were 2 weeks old, but the other 14 survived past weaning. Litter size, sex ratio, and pup developmental stages were all consistent with data obtained from other captive‐ and wild‐born litters. Both dams were very attentive to their litters, and during the pups' first 2 weeks spent >90% of their time in the dens with the pups. By 2 days after birth and during their first 2 weeks of life, the pups spent 86% of their time in a nursing position. Before parturition and during the first week post‐partum, one of the dams (DAL) was clearly dominant to the other (WHI). However, the females' dominance rank reversed 2 weeks post‐partum. On two occasions during the pups' first 2 weeks DAL stole and reared one of WHI's pups, but between Weeks 3 and 4 all of DAL's pups were stolen and WHI raised both litters as one until they were weaned. The pups began spending time out of their den at approximately 1 month of age. The timing of the births, the design of the wild dogs' management facility, and the presence of several dens in different enclosures within the facility all likely contributed to the successful rearing of the litters. The pups in both litters were very similar in size because of the short interval between births, so one litter did not have a competitive advantage over the other with respect to gaining access to the dam for milk. The facility's design helped mitigate aggression within the pack, and the presence of multiple dens enabled to dams to move the pups to different den sites and allowed the two females to stay visually and spatially apart from each other while remaining with the pack. The endocrine regulation of parturition exhibits several interspecies differences. Among the endocrine parameters considered to be the most important ones from the point of view of the regulation of parturition the concentration of oestrogens (oestradiol, oestriol and oestrone), progesterone, PGF2 alfa and its degradation product PGFM, was determined in both peripheral and uterine venous blood by RIA method in rats starting from the 15th day of pregnancy to the 3rd or 4th day following parturition. In the pregnant rat oestriol could only be detected on the day of parturition (21th day). Concentrations of oestriol and oestradiol were the highest on the day of parturition. An opposite tendency could be observed as far as progesterone concentration was concerned, i.e., the concentration decreased gradually from the 15th day of pregnancy onwards and the lowest value was reached on the day of parturition both in peripheral and uterine venous blood. PGF2 alfa and PGFM concentrations in the uterine vein increased gradually from the 15th day of pregnancy and the highest value could be detected peri partum. Our data, in accordance with those of others support the idea that the hormones investigated are involved in the process of parturition, i.e., characteristic changes of oestrogens, progesterone and prostaglandin levels ensue in the rat prior to parturition.  相似文献
