Summary Relationships between organisms at all trophic levels are influenced by the primary productivity of the ecosystem, and factors which enhance rates of primary production may modify trophic relationships and community structure. Nutrient enrichment of intertidal and nearshore waters leads to enhanced production by intertidal algae, and it was hypothesized that where rocky shores are washed by nutrient-rich upwelled waters, the intertidal communities should show a characteristic functional structure, based on the effects of enhanced primary production. Study sites were chosen on rocky shores in southern Africa, central Chile and the Canary Islands, in areas with and without coastal upwelling, and mid-shore community structure at these sites was analysed in terms of the abundance of certain functional guilds of organisms.It was found that algal cover and the biomass of herbivorous limpets supported per unit area on rocky shores were significantly greater in regions of coastal upwelling than in regions where upwelling did not occur. Ground cover by sessile filter-feeding organisms was significantly greater on shores in non-upwelled areas. However, correspondence analysis showed no functional aspect of intertidal community structure that was characteristic of coasts washed by upwelled waters. Primary reasons for this are probably the large variations in the nature of nutrient enrichment that accompanies upwelling, and in the nutrient status of non-upwelled areas. The structure of rocky intertidal communities may be influenced by large-scale patterns of productivity. In this study we examine the in situ rates of production by intertidal epilithic microalgae (chlorophyll a production per unit area per month), intertidal nutrient concentrations (nitrates, nitrites, phosphates and silicates), and standing stocks of different functional-form groups of macroalgae around the South African coast, and their relationships to consumer biomass. Clear gradients of in situ intertidal primary production and nutrient concentrations were recorded around the South African coast, values being highest on the west coast, intermediate on the south and lowest on the east coast. Primary production by intertidal epilithic microalgae was correlated with nutrient availability and could also be related to nearshore phytoplankton production. The dominance patterns of different functional forms of macroalgae changed around the coast, with foliose algae prevalent on the west coast and coralline algae on the east coast. However, overall macroalgal standing stocks did not reflect the productivity gradient, being equally high on the east and west coasts, and low in the south. Positive relationships existed between the average biomass of intertidal intertebrate consumers (grazers and filter-feeders) and intertidal productivity, although only the grazers were directly connected to in situ production by epilithic intertidal microalgae. The maximum body size of a widely distributed limpet, Patella granularis, was also positively correlated with level of in situ primary production. The maximal values of biomass attained by intertidal filter-feeders were not related to intertidal primary production, and were relatively constant around the coast. At a local scale, filter-feeder biomass is known to be strongly influenced by wave action. This implies that the local-scale water movements over-ride any effects that large-scale gradients of primary production may have on filter-feeders. The large-scale gradient in intertidal productivity around the coast is thus strongly linked with grazer biomass and individual body size, but any effect it has on filter-feeder biomass seems subsidiary to the local effects of wave action. 相似文献

The effects of ontogeny, diet, and phylogeny on glycogen storage levels and esterase and alkaline phosphatase activities in four related prickleback fishes were determined in situ using quantitative histochemistry. Of these species, Cebidichthys violaceus and Xiphister mucosus shift from carnivory to herbivory at approximately 45 mm standard length (SL), whereas Xiphister atropurpureus and Anoplarchus purpurescens remain carnivores. Comparisons between small (30-40 mm SL) and larger (60-75 mm SL) wild-caught juveniles showed that glycogen storage levels and alkaline phosphatase activity were unchanged with ontogeny. Comparisons between the larger wild-caught juveniles and juveniles of the same size that had been raised on a high-protein animal diet revealed that glycogen storage level and alkaline phosphatase activity increased in all species in response to this diet. Esterase activity also increased in response to the high-protein animal diet in all four species but increased with ontogeny only in C. violaceus, X. mucosus, and X. atropurpureus, in the xiphisterine clade, and not in A. purpurescens, in the adjacent alectriine clade. Xiphister mucosus and X. atropurpureus showed indistinguishable responses in esterase activity to ontogeny and diet despite their divergent natural diets. Overall, glycogen storage level and alkaline phosphatase activity responded primarily to diet, whereas esterase activity was also influenced by ontogeny and phylogeny and differed between intestinal regions among the species. 相似文献

This study looked for evidence of trophic shifts in the diet of two predatory catfishes ( Bagrus docmac and Schilbe intermedius ) following the establishment of introduced Nile perch ( Lates niloticus ) into lakes of the Lake Victoria basin. Bagrus docmac exhibited a shift from a primarily piscivorous diet dominated by haplochromine cichlids to a broader diet that included a significant proportion of invertebrates and the cyprinid fish, Rastrineobola argentea , which became abundant following depletion of the haplochromines. Schilbe intermedius exhibited a trophic shift from a piscivorous diet dominated by haplochromines to an insectivorous diet. The flexibility in diet exhibited by these two catfishes may have permitted these species to persist, albeit in reduced numbers, subsequent to the introduction of Nile perch and may facilitate resurgence as fishing pressure reduces numbers of large Nile perch. 相似文献

Synopsis Black & Miller (1991) concluded that there was no large impact of an experimental harvest of rockweed,Ascophyllum nodosum, on fishes. A critique of their study demonstrates that this conclusion cannot be substantiated by their data because of sampling biases, errors in experimental design and low statistical power. Deciphering ecological effects of major catastrophic events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, storms and fires, requires rapid interdisciplinary efforts often hampered by a lack of pre-event data. Using results of intertidal surveys conducted shortly before and immediately after Chile's 2010 M(w) 8.8 earthquake along the entire rupture zone (ca. 34-38°S), we provide the first quantification of earthquake and tsunami effects on sandy beach ecosystems. Our study incorporated anthropogenic coastal development as a key design factor. Ecological responses of beach ecosystems were strongly affected by the magnitude of land-level change. Subsidence along the northern rupture segment combined with tsunami-associated disturbance and drowned beaches. In contrast, along the co-seismically uplifted southern rupture, beaches widened and flattened increasing habitat availability. Post-event changes in abundance and distribution of mobile intertidal invertebrates were not uniform, varying with land-level change, tsunami height and coastal development. On beaches where subsidence occurred, intertidal zones and their associated species disappeared. On some beaches, uplift of rocky sub-tidal substrate eliminated low intertidal sand beach habitat for ecologically important species. On others, unexpected interactions of uplift with man-made coastal armouring included restoration of upper and mid-intertidal habitat seaward of armouring followed by rapid colonization of mobile crustaceans typical of these zones formerly excluded by constraints imposed by the armouring structures. Responses of coastal ecosystems to major earthquakes appear to vary strongly with land-level change, the mobility of the biota and shore type. Our results show that interactions of extreme events with human-altered shorelines can produce surprising ecological outcomes, and suggest these complex responses to landscape alteration can leave lasting footprints in coastal ecosystems. 相似文献

We summarize characteristic sequences of morphological change in the teleost visual system from larvae to large adults at the level of the retina, the optic tract and the optic tectum. These shifts include sizes and ratios of cone and rod receptor cells, sizes and types of retinal ganglion cells and optic tract fibers as well as features of the optic tectum. Teleost larvae are the smallest vertebrates known. We suggest that the utilization of color contrasts as an adaptive benefit dictates the starting point of morophological development, which is a pure cone retina in most fish larvae. The direction of morphological and functional shifts in the teleost visual system during growth is determined by continuous retinal stretch, which allows for improving visual abilities. The larval visual system probably provides just adequate photopic (cone-)acuity for plankton feeding, but limited space in the retina hampers optimization of both, photopic resolving power and sensitivity Limited space also Irevents the simultaneous development of the scotopic (rod-)system. Over a wide range of body sizes, morphological parameters change, photopic and scotopic resolving power, acuity and sensitivity improve. 1. Despite widespread recognition of the role of body size in fish trophic ecology, little attention has been focused on this issue in isotopic studies, particularly in tropical systems. 2. We used analyses of stomach contents and stable isotopes to examine size‐related shifts in diet in a terapontid fish assemblage in the Australian wet–dry tropics. Stomach content analysis identified substantial ontogenetic dietary shifts in all species, corresponding to changes in body size–isotope trajectories for two species. Shifts away from relatively specialised diets of heavily 13C‐depleted insect larvae to consumption of a range of items across multiple basal carbon sources appeared to be the proximate cause of observed isotopic changes. 3. Allochthonous organic matter in the form of C3 riparian vegetation was particularly important to smaller terapontids before larger fish shifted to a broad range of dietary items and similarly broad range of basal carbon sources. 4. While there was general agreement between δ13C and stomach content analysis, there was minimal concurrence between the latter and δ15N isotopic derivation of estimates of trophic position. Due to factors such as omnivory, isotopically overlapping basal sources and uncertainties about rates of isotopic fractionation in both predator and prey species, stomach content analysis provides an essential complement to isotopic methodologies in tropical systems. 5. Given that basal sources supporting any individual species can change markedly with ontogeny, consideration of intraspecific, size‐related variation is necessary in isotopic studies of food web structure. 相似文献

Japanese freshwater fishes, including lampreys, comprise 15 orders, 35 families, and 96 genera, with 211 species and subspecies. Most belong to the families Cyprinidae (29% of species and subspecies), Gobiidae (21%), Salmonidae (10%), and Cobitidae (8%). Cyprinids and cobitids presumably originated from east Asia, gobiids from southeast Asia, and cottids and salmonids from the north Pacific. Japanese freshwater fishes include 88 endemic species and subspecies, of which three have been extirpated. Fishes introduced into natural rivers and lakes for inland commercial fisheries and sport fishing, and by accident, include many exotic species, of which 23 now inhabit natural freshwaters. These often have destroyed the local fish fauna by predation, and caused genetic pollution by hybridization with local strains. Destruction of freshwater environments by land development also poses a threat to Japanese freshwater fish communities. In addition Japanese freshwater systems have been markedly altered by development of rice paddy fields which have caused some species to decline but others to flourish, and changed the distribution patterns of fishes between upstream and downstream areas. To conserve endangered species and declining communities of Japanese freshwater fishes, we need to clarify the characteristics of their original habitats and the effects of developing paddy fields, from both the ecological and historical points of view. 相似文献

An ecological survey was carried out at bimonthly intervals for 2 years from 2000 to 2002 in the intertidal granite shore at Chengshan Cape, on the northwest coast of the Yellow Sea. Significant differences in macroalgal composition were evident in different seasonal assemblages. The highest species richness was found from April to August, and the lowest in October. In all the seasonal assemblages surveyed, Rhodophyta showed the highest species richness, Phaeophyta ranked second and Chlorophyta last. Macroalgal biomass peaked in August (246 gm-2). From December to February cold-water species, such asEnteromorpha intestinalis, Porphyra spp., Gelidium amansii, Halymennia sinensis, Laminaria japonica and Polysiphonia urceolata, dominated the assemblage.In June warm-temperate and subtropical species became dominant. Species diversity peaked in April and then declined throughout the year until December. The seasonal assemblages surveyed could be grouped into an Enteromorpha-Corallina-Ulva dominated winter-spring association, a Sargassum-Ulva-Corallina dominated summer association and an Ulva-Gymnogongrus-Sargassum dominated autumn association.Regression analysis showed that changes in seawater temperature were the main influence on macroalgal biomass. The 1998 global coral bleaching event was the largest recorded historical disturbance of coral reefs and resulted in extensive habitat loss. Annual censuses of reef fish community structure over a 12-year period spanning the bleaching event revealed a marked phase shift from a prebleach to postbleach assemblage. Surprisingly, we found that the bleaching event had no detectable effect on the abundance, diversity or species richness of a local cryptobenthic reef fish community. Furthermore, there is no evidence of regeneration even after 5–35 generations of these short-lived species. These results have significant implications for our understanding of the response of coral reef ecosystems to global warming and highlight the importance of selecting appropriate criteria for evaluating reef resilience. 相似文献

Factors and processes affecting community structures operate at various spatial and temporal scales. We analyzed how similarities of rocky intertidal assemblages vary at different spatial scales using a nested, hierarchical sampling design. Intertidal assemblages consisting of algae, sessile animals, and mobile animals were censused on five rock walls at each of five shores chosen within each of six regions along the Pacific coast of Japan, encompassing 1,800 km of coastlines. Based on this sampling design, similarities in assemblages were calculated using both qualitative (presence/absence) and quantitative (percent cover and density) data, and compared at three spatial levels: (1) rock level (the finest spatial scale, encompassing several to hundreds of meters), (2) shore level (the intermediate spatial scale, encompassing several to tens of kilometers), and (3) region level (the broadest spatial scale, encompassing hundreds to thousands of kilometers). Cluster analysis showed that assemblages were categorized into distinct regional groups except for the two southern regions, but they did not separate clearly from each shore. A nested analysis of similarities revealed significant variation in similarities among regions and among shores within each region, with the former showing greater variation. Similarity was negatively correlated with geographic distance at the regional level but not at the shore or the rock levels. At the regional level, similarity decreased more rapidly with distance for mobile animals than sessile organisms. The analyses highlighted the importance of broad-scale abiotic/biotic factors such as oceanic current conditions and biogeographic factors in determining observed patterns in similarity of rocky intertidal assemblages. 相似文献

We describe differences in life history of the intertidal arboreal snail, Littoraria filosa, among patches of mangroves ranging in size from isolated trees to large stands several square kilometres in area. Recruitment of L. filosa occurred from mid spring (October) to early winter (June), recruits grew rapidly and copulating adults were found during the following September–April. Populations within large patches of forest were annuals; all or most individuals died between October–January (spring–midsummer). In contrast, those in smaller peripheral patches were more likely to survive over the summer but survival differed among patches and years. These differences in life history were caused by a parasitoid fly (genus Sarcophaga) that attacked L. filosa 10 mm and longer and was present in all large patches, but absent from, or rare, in smaller peripheral patches. Experimental introductions to isolated trees confirmed that the fly could kill L. filosa. Another sarcophagid parasitoid that attacked L. filosa from 4 to less than 10 mm long was also found in every patch. The combined effects of these parasitoids appear to determine the metapopulation structure of L. filosa. Most adults in large patches were killed by the larger fly during early summer. Summer recruits were often killed by the smaller fly within a month of settlement and when this happened effective recruitment of L. filosa was reduced to autumn. The planktotrophic larval stage of L. filosa lasts less than 1 month, so the source of autumn recruits to all patches must have been adults that survived the early summer, most of which were in small patches or on isolated trees. Consequently these ”peripheral sources” are likely to be important for persistence of the metapopulation of L. filosa. The results of this study demonstrate that metapopulation structure may be determined by complex interactions and that common models cannot be assumed to apply in all habitats. 为了解海坛海峡潮间带大型底栖生物现状,我们于2005年10月、2006年4月在位于台湾海峡北端的海坛海峡设置6条断面,依据<海洋监测规范第7部分:近海污染生态调查和生物监测>(GB17378.7-1998),进行潮间带大型底栖动物采样.共采获潮间带大型底栖动物228种,其中多毛类77种、软体动物75种、甲壳动物52种、棘皮动物7种、鱼类5种、其它类群动物12种.年平均生物量(湿重)为12.14 g/m2,年平均密度为571.5 ind./m2 .在数量组成中,软体动物占优势(314.2 ind./m2, 5.38 g/m2),其次是多毛类(20 4.7 ind./m2, 3.35 g/m2).Shannon-Weiner多样性指数3.419, Margalef物种丰富度指数3.271, Pielou均匀度指数0.780, 群落特征表明海坛海峡潮间带生态环境属正常状况.年平均去灰干重2.19 g(AFDW)/m2,依据Brey(1990)的公式计算,潮间带大型底栖动物次级生产力3.72 g(AFDW)/ (m2·a),年平均P/B值为1.74 a-1,表明海坛海峡潮间带大型底栖动物中,个体小、生命周期短、繁殖力高、栖息密度大的种类对潮间带大型底栖动物次级生产力的贡献较大[动物学报 54(3):428-435,2008]. 相似文献

The feeding niche ofColostethus stepheni changes during ontogeny. Small individuals eat small arthropods, principally mites and collembolans, and larger frogs eat bigger prey of other types. The shift in prey types is not a passive effect of selection for bigger prey. There is a strong relationship between electivity for prey types and frog size, independent of electivity for prey size. Four indices of general activity during foraging (number of movements, velocity, total area utilized and time spent moving), which are associated with electivity for prey types in adult frogs and lizards, did not predict the ontogenetic change in the diet ofC. stepheni. Apparently, the behavioral changes that cause the ontogenetic change inC. stepheni are more subtle than shifts in general activity during foraging. Studies of niche partitioning in communities of anurans that do not take into consideration ontogenetic changes in diet and seasonal changes in the size structures of populations present a partial and possibly erroneous picture of the potential interactions among species. 相似文献

The effect of tidal emersion on survivorship, photosynthesis and embryonic development was studied in 8 h old zygotes and 7 d old embryos of the intertidal brown alga Pelvetia fastigiata (J. Ag.) DeToni. Zygotes and embryos were outplanted for single low tides in the intertidal zone on the central coast of California (U.S.A.) during June, 1990. Both zygotes and embryos exhibited close to 100% survival when outplanted beneath the canopy of adult P. fastigiata. Embryos (7 d old) also exhibited high survival when outplanted in a red algal turf, the microhabitat where most successful recruitment occurs. However, zygotes (8 h old) experienced high mortality (65–90%) when outplanted in the turf microhabitat. Embryos and zygotes that survived emersion experienced sub-lethal stress that temporarily impaired light-saturated photosynthesis when plants were reimmersed in seawater. The effects of sub-lethal stress were more pronounced in 8 h old zygotes than 7 d embryos, and more severe in the turf microhabitat than beneath the adult Pelvetia canopy. Zygotes outplanted in the red algal turf did not re-establish net photosynthesis until at least 6 h after re-immersion. Photosynthesis was less inhibited in 8 h old zygotes outplanted beneath the adult Pelvetia canopy, and recovered to control (non-emersed) levels within 3 h of re-immersion. Embryos (7 d old) were able to achieve positive net photosynthesis immediately on re-immersion after emersion in the turf or canopy microhabitats. Emersion also retarded the rate of embryonic development in 8 h old zygotes, delaying the formation of primary rhizoids, which help to attach the plant to the substrate. For example, at 19 h post-fertilization, 75% of control (non-emersed) zygotes had developed rhizoids, compared to 3% and 30% for zygotes outplanted in the turf and canopy microhabitats. The different emersion responses of 8 h old zygotes and 7 d old embryos appeared to be related to their ability to tolerate cellular dehydration. At the water-sediment interface of aquatic ecosystems, the presence of biogenic structures produced by benthic invertebrates strongly affects biogeochemical processes. The quantification of these structures and the assessment of the vertical distribution of fauna are essential for determining the impact of communities in sediments. In the present study, computer axial tomodensitometry (CAT-scan) was used to measure the space occupied by an intertidal community of the St. Lawrence estuary. Three cores were sampled at a site that was considered homogeneous according to surface sediments. The vertical distribution of biogenic structures and gravel were measured in the three cores using CAT-scan; the vertical distribution of fauna was also analysed for each core. The biogenic structures were highest at the water-sediment interface and decreased with depth in the three cores. The number of invertebrates also decreased with depth. We observed similar distributions of biogenic structures in cores 1 and 2. However, fewer biogenic structures were observed below 90 mm in core 3. This result was correlated with a high quantity of gravel from 90 to 140 mm in core 3 whereas the other cores had lower quantities of coarse material. We found relationships among the distributions of biogenic structures, fauna, and sediment characteristics (gravel quantity) that can affect species distribution. The vertical distributions of Macoma balthica, Mya arenaria, Nereis virens, and small-sized gallery-producing species (nematodes and oligochaetes) could also be recorded with the CAT-scan method. Thus, CAT-scan is an excellent tool to determine the fine-scale heterogeneity in the space occupied by benthic invertebrates in sediments. 相似文献

To assess fish stocks, the populations and community assemblages of metazoan parasites were compared in 1172 Chilean hake Merluccius gayi landed at two major ports, and caught during 1991–1992 in three major fishing areas off central Chile. At least two ecological stocks are suggested, based on consistent differences in parasitism between body length classes for Grillotia dollfusi, Hysterothylacium sp., Clestobothrium crassiceps and Aporocotyle wilhelmi . More use should be made of the information on whole parasite assemblages including, for example, patterns of co-occurrence of parasite species. Univariate analyses on selected taxa in samples from different areas may show no differences because of the same prevalence or abundance for each parasite taxon, but opposite numerical arrangements of co-occurring taxa in community assemblages would remain undetected. 相似文献

The reliability of 1H chemical shift calculations for DNA is assessed by comparing the experimentally and calculated chemical shifts of a reasonably large number of independently determined DNA structures. The calculated chemical shifts are based on semiempirical relations derived by Giessner-Prettre and Pullman [(1987) Q. Rev. Biophys., 20, 113–172]. The standard deviation between calculated and observed chemical shifts is found to be quite small, i.e. 0.17 ppm. This high accuracy, which is achieved without parameter adjustment, makes it possible to analyze the structural dependencies of chemical shifts in a reliable fashion. The conformation-dependent 1H chemical shift is mainly determined by the ring current effect and the local magnetic anisotropy, while the third possible effect, that of the electric field, is surprisingly small. It was further found that for a double helical environment, the chemical shift of the sugar protons, H2 to H5, is mainly affected by the ring current and magnetic anisotropy of their own base. Consequently, the chemical shift of these sugar protons is determined by two factors, namely the type of base to which the sugar ring is attached, C, T, A, or G, and secondly by the -angle. In particular, the H2 shift varies strongly with the -angle, and strong upfield H2 shifts directly indicate that the -angle is in the syn domain. The H1 shift is not only strongly affected by its own base, but also by its 3-neighboring base. On the other hand, base protons, in particular H5 of cytosine and methyl protons of thymine, are affected mainly by the 5-neighboring bases, although some effect (0.2 ppm) stems from the 3-neighboring base. The H2 protons are mainly affected by the 3-neighboring base. As a result of these findings a simple scheme is proposed for sequential assignment of resonances from B-helices based on chemical shifts. 相似文献
