Zonation of intertidal macrobenthos in the estuaries of Schelde and Ems   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Based on data, collected in 1980–1990, the intertidal benthic macrofauna of the Schelde and Ems estuaries was compared. The spatial occurrence of the benthic macrofauna along the salinity gradient, including the freshwater tidal area was emphasized. Both estuaries appeared to have a very similar species composition, especially at genus level. The higher number of species observed in the Schelde estuary was probably due to a greater habitat diversity. In both estuaries species diversity decreased with distance upstream. The total density did not vary along the estuarine gradient, whereas biomass is highest in the polyhaline zone.In both estuaries distinct intertidal benthic communities were observed along the salinity gradient: a marine community in the polyhaline zone, a brackish community in the mesohaline zone, and a third community in the oligohaline and freshwater tidal zones of the estuary. These three communities were very similar between both estuaries. Their main characteristics were discussed together with the occurrence and distribution of the dominant species. For the Schelde estuary and to a lesser extent also for the Ems estuary, there was evidence that anthropogenic stress had a negative effect on the intertidal macrobenthic communities of the oligohaline/freshwater tidal zone. Only Oligochaeta were dominating, whereas the very euryhaline and/or true limnetic species were missing. In the mesohaline zone, the Schelde estuary was dominated by large numbers of short-living, opportunistic species, whereas in the Ems estuary relatively more stable macrobenthic communities were observed. A comparison with some other European estuaries showed in general similar trends as those observed for the Schelde and Ems estuaries.  相似文献

The intertidal benthic macrofauna of the Schelde estuary (The Netherlands and Belgium) was sampled in late autumn of 1990 at 50 stations along the whole salinity gradient (between Vlissingen and Dendermonde), including the freshwater tidal part. All stations were situated in sheltered areas with a relatively muddy sediment. Species richness, diversity and total biomass of the benthic macrofauna decreased along the salinity gradient from Vlissingen to Dendermonde, while total density showed no clear trend. Especially the oligohaline and freshwater tidal part of the Schelde estuary was characterized by a very impoverished benthic community, composed only of Oligochaeta. No other species (freshwater, marine or brackish) was observed in this part of the estuary. The marine part had a more diverse macrozoobenthos structure than that of the brackish part. Species found only in the marine zone areCerastoderma edule, Tharyx marioni, Eteone longa, Nephtys hombergii andCapitella capitata. In the brackish part of the estuary,Corophium volutator was a typical, dominant species. However, a lot of the dominant species were common in both the marine and brackish part of the Schelde estuary (e.g. Heteromastus filiformis, Pygospio elegans, Nereis diversicolor, Macoma balthica). The observed gradient in species composition and dominance is compared with some other European estuaries. The marine and brackish part of the Schelde estuary is quite similar to other european estuaries. The freshwater tidal part, however, was more impoverished.  相似文献

During the course of 1996, phytoplankton was monitored in the turbid, freshwater tidal reaches of the Schelde estuary. Using a simple light-limited primary production model, phytoplankton growth rates were estimated to evaluate whether phytoplankton could attain net positive growth rates and whether growth rates were high enough for a bloom to develop. Two phytoplankton blooms were observed in the freshwater tidal reaches. The first bloom occurred in March and was mainly situated in the most upstream reaches of the freshwater tidal zone, suggesting that it was imported from the tributary river Schelde. The second bloom occurred in July and August. This summer bloom was situated more downstream in the freshwater tidal reaches and appeared to have developed within the estuary. A comparison between phytoplankton growth rates estimated using a simple primary production model and flushing rate of the water indicated that no net increase in phytoplankton biomass was possible in March while phytoplankton could theoretically increase its biomass by 20% per day during summer. Chlorophyllaconcentrations at all times decreased strongly at salinities between 5–10 psu. This decline was ascribed to a combination of salinity stress and light limitation. Phytoplankton biomass and estimated annual net production were much higher in the freshwater tidal zone compared to the brackish reaches of the estuary (salinity > 10 psu) despite mixing depth to euphotic depth ratios being similar. Possible reasons for this high production include high nutrient concentrations, low zooplankton grazing pressure and import of phytoplankton blooms from the tributary rivers.  相似文献

Abiotic factors and primary production by phytoplankton and microphytobenthos was studied in the turbid Westeschelde estuary. Because of the high turbidity and high nutrient concentrations primary production by phytoplankton is light-limited. In the inner and central parts of the estuary maximum rates of primary production were therefore measured during the summer, whereas in the more marine part spring and autumn bloom were observed. Organic loading is high, causing near anaerobic conditions upstream in the river Schelde. Because of this there were no important phytoplankton grazers in this part of the estuary and hence the grazing pressure on phytoplankton was minimal. As this reduced losses, biomass is maximal in the river Schelde, despite the very low growth rates. On a number of occasions, primary production by benthic micro-algae on intertidal flats was studied. Comparison of their rates of primary production to phytoplankton production in the same period led to the conclusion that the contribution to total primary production by benthic algae was small. The main reason for this is that the photosynthetic activity declines rapidly after the flats emerged from the water. It is argued that CO2-limitation could only be partially responsible for the noticed decrease in activity.  相似文献

A compilation of available data in between 1967 and 2002 on spring zooplankton abundance was made for the brackish and the freshwater zone of the Schelde estuary. The general picture is a significant increase of 1–2 orders of magnitude in abundance for Rotifera, Copepoda and Branchiopoda (mainly Cladocera) in the freshwater zone, while zooplankton abundance in the brackishwater zone remained more constant. Possible natural and management related causes for this increase in zooplankton abundance are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The autotrophic production and heterotrophic consumption of organic matter in the Westerschelde, a highly turbid and eutrophic estuary in the Southwest Netherlands is examined by means of a dynamic simulation model. The model describes the ecologically relevant processes in thirteen spatial compartments and adequately fits most observed data.Three autotrophic processes are included in the model. Net pelagic photosynthetic production is relatively low (average 41 gC m–2 yr–1) and three spatial compartments near the turbidity maximum zone are respiratory sinks of phytoplankton biomass. According to the model, net phytobenthic primary production is more important than pelagic primary production in the upstream half of the Westerschelde. On the scale of the entire estuary, benthic primary production amounts to about 60% of pelagic primary production. Water-column nitrification, which is very important in the nitrogen cycle, is most pronounced near the turbidity zone where it accounts for the major autotrophic fixation of carbon (up to 27 g C m–2 yr–1). Viewed on the scale of the total estuary, however, the process is not very important.Less than 20% of total organic carbon input to the estuary is primary produced, the remainder is imported from waste discharges and from the river. The degree of heterotrophy of the Westerschelde estuary proved to be one of the highest yet reported. On average 380 g carbon per square metre is net lost per year (range 200–1200 gC m–2 yr–1). The yearly community respiration (bacterial mineralization, respiration of higher trophic levels and sedimentation) is 4 to 35 times (estuarine mean of 6) higher than the net production. This degree of heterotrophy is highest near the turbidity maximum and generally decreases from the freshwater to the seaward boundary. About 75% of all carbon losses can be ascribed to pelagic heterotrophic processes; the sediment is only locally important.Mineralisation rates are highest in the turbidity region, but as only a fraction of total carbon resides here, less than 20% of all organic carbon is lost in this part of the estuary. This result is in contradiction with a previous budget of the estuary, based on data of the early seventies, where more than 80% of all carbon was estimated to be lost in the turbidity zone. Part of this discrepancy is probably caused by changes that have occurred in the estuary since that time.Due to the high heterotrophic activity, nearly all imported and in situ produced carbon is lost in the estuary itself and the Westerschelde is an insignificant source of organic matter to the coastal zone. The model estuary acts as a trap for reactive organic matter, both from the land, from the sea or in situ produced. Internal cycling, mainly in the water column, results in the removal of most of the carbon while the more refractory part is exported to the sea.  相似文献

The zonation of non-breeding waterbirds along the Schelde estuary (The Netherlands–Belgium), one of the longest estuaries in NW-Europe with still a complete salinity gradient, including a large freshwater tidal area, was described. Numbers of birds were counted monthly over the period October 1991 to June 1997. Highest numbers of waterbirds were observed in late autumn and winter, with annual peak numbers ranging between 150,000 and 235,000 individuals for the whole estuary. Based on a multivariate analysis different waterbird communities were observed along the salinity gradient. The polyhaline areas of the estuary were numerically dominated by the waders Oystercatcher and Dunlin. Due to the presence of a large brackish marsh in the mesohaline zone, the waterbird community in this area was dominated by the herbivores Wigeon and Greylag Goose. In the oligohaline and freshwater tidal areas, the waterbird community was dominated by duck species, with Teal and Mallard being the most important. The international importance of the Schelde estuary for waterbirds was evidenced by the fact that for 21 waterbird species the 1% level criterion, according to the Ramsar convention, was exceeded. The relation of the observed diversity and community patterns with the functional and habitat diversity of the Schelde estuary as well as the effect of recent conservation measures to preserve this habitat were discussed.  相似文献

The distribution and accumulation of organic matter, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in mangrove soils at four sites along the Shark River estuary of south Florida were investigated with empirical measures and a process-based model. The mangrove nutrient model (NUMAN) was developed from the SEMIDEC marsh organic matter model and parameterized with data from mangrove wetlands. The soil characteristics in the four mangrove sites varied greatly in both concentrations and profiles of soil carbon, N and P. Organic matter decreased from 82% in the upstream locations to 30% in the marine sites. Comparisons of simulated and observed results demonstrated that landscape gradients of soil characteristics along the estuary can be adequately modeled by accounting for plant production, litter decomposition and export, and allochthonous input of mineral sediments. Model sensitivity analyses suggest that root production has a more significant effect on soil composition than litter fall. Model simulations showed that the greatest change in organic matter, N, and P occurred from the soil surface to 5 cm depth. The rapid decomposition of labile organic matter was responsible for this decrease in organic matter. Simulated N mineralization rates decreased quickly with depth, which corresponded with the decrease of labile organic matter. The increase in organic matter content and decrease in soil bulk density from mangrove sites at downstream locations compared to those at upstream locations was controlled mainly by variation in allochthonous inputs of mineral matter at the mouth of the estuary, along with gradients in mangrove root production. Research on allochthonouns sediment input and in situ root production of mangroves is limited compared to their significance to understanding nutrient biogeochemistry of these wetlands. More accurate simulations of temporal patterns of nutrient characteristics with depth will depend on including the effects of disturbance such as hurricanes on sediment redistribution and biomass production.  相似文献

Biota and abiotic environment in the Westerschelde estuary   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
An estuary such as the Westerschelde is a highly dynamic environment, both on an ecological time scale where climatic and hydrodynamic forces, mainly the tides, shape a very variable environment and on a geological, evolutionary time scale, since estuaries are young and very unstable habitats.Low species diversity and high adaptability of the resident animal and plant populations are characteristic of estuarine habitats where large fluctuations in submersion, salinity, temperature etc. occur. The existing biota are therefore resilient to environmental stress and effects of the important influx of anorganic and organic pollutants from the river Schelde and its tributaries on the biota in the estuary are not easy to detect.Although water movement and sedimentation patterns in the Westerschelde are relatively well known, there exists little information on important ecological processes such as primary production and heterotrophic metabolism in the estuary.Contribution no. 405 of the Delta Institute, Yerseke.  相似文献

A tentative nitrogen budget for the Westerschelde (SW Netherlands) is constructed by means of a simulation model with thirteen spatial compartments. Biochemical and chemical processes in the water column are dynamically modeled; fluxes of dissolved constituents across the water-bottom interface are expressed by means of diagenetic equations. The model is calibrated on a large amount of observed variables in the estuary (1980–1986) with relatively fine temporal and spatial detail. Additional constraints are imposed by the stoichiometric coupling of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen flows and the required conservation of mass. The model is able to reproduce rather well the observed distributions of nitrate, ammonium, oxygen and Kjeldahl nitrogen both in time and space. Also, model output of biochemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon falls within observed ranges.By far the most pervasive process in the nitrogen cycle of the estuary is nitrification which mainly takes place in the water column of the upper estuarine part. On average about three times as much nitrate is leaving the estuary at the sea side compared to what enters from the river and from waste discharges. Ammonium on the other hand is consumed much faster (nitrification) than it is regenerated and only about one third of the total import leaves the estuary at the sea side. The budget for detrital nitrogen reveals import from the river, from wastes and from the sea. Phytoplankton uptake of inorganic nitrogen is negligible in the model.About 21% of total nitrogen, 33% of inorganic nitrogen, is removed from the estuary (mainly to the atmosphere through denitrification) and the load of nitrogen net exported to the sea amounts to about 51 000 tonnes per year. Total denitrification in our model is lower than what was estimated in the literature from the late seventies, where a nitrogen removal up to 40–50% of the total inorganic load was reported. Part of the differences could be methodological, but inspection of the nutrient profiles that led to these conclusions show them to be different to the ones used in our study. The oxygen deficient zone has moved upstream since the late seventies, entrailing the zone of denitrification into the riverine part of the Schelde. The nitrification process now starts immediately upon entering the estuary.  相似文献

The heterotrophic bacterial communities associated with the seaweedsFucus vesiculosus andUlva rigida in an estuary were studied. Changes in these communities were monitored by monthly sampling during the year. The isolated strains were identified at the genus level and grouped into 14 clusters by their similarities. Seasonal changes in genera and clusters as well as variations in diversity were related to primary production periods and fluctuation of salinity levels. TheFlavobacterium group was the major inhabitant of algal surfaces, being dominant after the primary production peaks occurred in spring and autumn. The decrease of dissolved organic matter after these peaks yielded an increase in diversity. Important alterations in these bacterial communities were observed during a period of large decrease in the salinity of estuarine water. In general, the epiphytic communities of both seaweeds were similar in their composition and dynamics, but they were very different from the surrounding water communities.  相似文献

Aims: Research on biofilms requires validated quantitative models that focus both on matrix and viable bacterial mass. In this study, a new microplate model for the detection of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms was developed. Methods and Results: Dimethyl methylene blue (DMMB) dye was used to quantify biofilm matrix colorimetrically. Initially developed for the detection of glycosaminoglycans, the DMMB protocol was optimized for S. aureus biofilm research. In addition, the redox indicator resazurin was used to determine the viable bacterial biofilm burden. Conclusion: A new, simple and reproducible microplate test system based on DMMB and resazurin, offering a reliable differentiation between biofilm matrix and cellular activity, was developed and validated for the detection of S. aureus biofilms. Significance and Impact of the Study: The DMMB–resazurin microtitre plate model is a valuable tool for high capacity screening of biocides and for the development of synergistic mixtures of biocides, destroying both biofilm matrix and bacteria.  相似文献

Bacterially mediated iron redox cycling exerts a strong influence on groundwater geochemistry, but few studies have investigated iron biogeochemical processes in coastal alluvial aquifers from a microbiological viewpoint. The shallow alluvial aquifer located adjacent to Poona estuary on the subtropical Southeast Queensland coast represents a redox-stratified system where iron biogeochemical cycling potentially affects water quality. Using a 300 m transect of monitoring wells perpendicular to the estuary, we examined groundwater physico-chemical conditions and the occurrence of cultivable bacterial populations involved in iron (and manganese, sulfur) redox reactions in this aquifer. Results showed slightly acidic and near-neutral pH, suboxic conditions and an abundance of dissolved iron consisting primarily of iron(II) in the majority of wells. The highest level of dissolved iron(III) was found in a well proximal to the estuary most likely a result of iron curtain effects due to tidal intrusion. A number of cultivable, (an)aerobic bacterial populations capable of diverse carbon, iron, or sulfur metabolism coexisted in groundwater redox transition zones. Our findings indicated aerobic, heterotrophic respiration and bacterially mediated iron/sulfur redox reactions were integral to carbon cycling in the aquifer. High abundances of dissolved iron and cultivable iron and sulfur bacterial populations in estuary-adjacent aquifers have implications for iron transport to marine waters. This study demonstrated bacterially mediated iron redox cycling and associated biogeochemical processes in subtropical coastal groundwaters using culture-based methods.  相似文献

Abstract

The Changjiang estuary and its adjacent East China Sea (ECS) have been considered as one of the most dynamic areas significantly contributing to elemental exchanges globally. The purpose of this study was to understand the alteration of microbial consortia at the interface of riverine and coastal environments in relation to environmental variations as well as their roles in biogeochemical cycling at this dynamic region. We sampled surface sediment samples at 4 stations from the estuary to coastal regions of the ECS. Along with collections of physicochemical parameters, we sequenced bacterial 16S rRNA genes of clones from each sample. Results showed a distinct transition of bacterial community from typical freshwater sediment phyla (e.g., Betaproteobacteria and Firmicutes) to those commonly inhabited in saline environments (e.g., Deltaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria). The bacterial group at the transition zone characterized by high accumulation of organic matters and intense mixing of riverine and coastal waters was most diverse. Bacterial community structures at two ECS stations showed a similar pattern but contained different dominant taxa, shifting from Deltaproteobacteria-affiliated sulfate-reducing bacteria at the station closer to the shore to Gammaproteobacteria-affiliated nitrate-reducing bacteria further offshore. It suggested that the sedimentary bacterial community structure was related to salinity, sediment type, and substrate availability and composition.  相似文献

Exchange processes in estuaries such as the Westerschelde,an overview   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A short overview is presented on the principles of exchange processes of metals and PCBs for the Westerschelde, the estuary between the river Schelde and the North Sea. Critical reference is made to the commonly used interpretation of concentration-salinity mixing curves of dissolved material, and to the application of stability and distribution constants (coefficients) for metal species partitioning between dissolved, complexed and solid phases. A discussion is given on the specific PCB congener distribution, the impact of Kds on the solid/liquid percentual distribution in an estuarine system and the approach to determining the residence times of substances in an estuary.Communication no. 406 of the Delta Institute, Yerseke.  相似文献

Genetic variation was assayed at 14 allozyme loci in estuarine, coastal and offshore samples of lozano's goby, Pomatoschistus lozanoi and the sand goby, P. minutus. Samples were taken from locations on the Belgian Continental Shelf and in the Schelde estuary with a range of environmental heterogeneity. We evaluate whether any differences in (1) the degree of genetic variation and (2) allele frequencies at the various loci exist within samples occurring in various habitats on the BCS and in the Schelde estuary. No significant differences in levels of genetic diversity were recorded between estuarine, coastal and offshore samples in either species. A temporally stable clinal gradient in allele frequencies at the two-allele locus GPI-A(*) was observed in P. lozanoi, differentiating the samples in an estuarine, coastal and offshore group. We suggest that these differences might be maintained by balancing selection at locus GPI-A(*).  相似文献

Freshwater tidal estuaries comprise the most upstream reaches of estuaries and are often characterised by the presence of dense bacterial and algal populations which provide a large food source for bacterivorous and algivorous protists. In 1996, the protistan community in the freshwater tidal reaches of the Schelde estuary was monitored to evaluate whether these high food levels are reflected in a similarly high heterotrophic protistan biomass. Protistan distribution patterns were compared to those of metazoan zooplankton to evaluate the possible role of top-down regulation of protists by metazoans. Apart from the algivorous sarcodine Asterocaelum, which reached high densities in summer, heterotrophic protistan biomass was dominated by ciliates and, second in importance, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN). HNAN abundance was low (annual average 2490 cells ml–1) and did not display large seasonal variation. It is hypothesised that HNAN were top-down controlled by oligotrich ciliates throughout the year and by rotifers in summer. Ciliate abundance was generally relatively high (annual average 65 cells ml–1) and peaked in winter (maximum 450 cells ml–1). The decline of ciliate populations in summer was ascribed to grazing by rotifers, which developed dense populations in that season. In winter, ciliate populations were probably regulated `internally' by carnivorous ciliates (haptorids and Suctoria). Our observations suggest that, in this type of productive ecosystems, the microbial food web is mainly top-down controlled rather than regulated by food availability.  相似文献

The Scheldt river drains a densely populated and industrialized area in northern France, western Belgium and the south-west Netherlands. Mineralization of the high organic load carried by the river leads to oxygen depletion in the water column and high concentrations of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. Upon estuarine mixing, dissolved oxygen concentrations are gradually restored due to reaeration and dilution with sea water. The longitudinal redox gradient present in the Scheldt estuary strongly affects the geochemistry of nutrients. Dissolved nutrients in the water column and dissolved nitrogen species in sediment porewaters were determined for a typical summer and winter situation. Water column concentration-salinity plots showed conservative behaviour of dissolved Si during winter. During summer (and spring) dissolved Si may be completely removed from solution due to uptake by diatoms. The geochemistry of phosphorus was governed by inorganic and biological processes. The behaviour of nitrogen was controlled by denitrification in the anoxic fluvial estuary, followed by nitrification in the upper estuary (prior to oxygen regeneration). In addition, nitrogen was taken up during phytoplankton blooms in the lower estuary. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen species in porewaters from the upper 20 cm of sediments were obtained from a subtidal site in the middle of the lower estuary. Dissolved nutrient concentrations were low in the upper 10–15 cm of the sandy and organic poor (<1% POC) sediments mainly as a result of strong sediment mixing. The porewater profiles of ammonium and nitrate were evaluated quantitatively, using a one-dimensional steady-state diagenetic model. This coupled ammonium-nitrate model showed ammonification of organic matter to be restricted to the upper 4 to 7 cm of the sediments. Total nitrification ranged from 3.7–18.1 mmol m?2 d?1, converting all ammonium produced by ammonification. The net balance between nitrification and denitrification depended on the season. Nitrate was released from the sediments during winter but is taken up from the water column during summer. These results are in good agreement with data obtained from the independently calibrated water column model for the Scheldt Estuary (VAN GILSet al., 1993).  相似文献

Metal impacted, anoxic sediments from five sites at a coastal location in the wet/dry tropics of Australia were sampled during both wet and dry seasons. Metal concentrations in total sediment and porewater, and in potentially bioavailable and bioaccessible fractions, were measured. Pyrosequencing was used to sequence bacterial DNA extracted from the sediment, and the sequence data was used to generate community profiles at each sample site. Changes in bacterial populations between sites reflected changes in the concentrations of 7 metals/metalloids (Al, V, Mo, Ga, Zn, Cd, As), and best correlated with the HCl-extractable fraction of metals. Bacterial community structure was also related to physicochemical factors, such as redox potential and organic carbon. Despite a strong sulphide gradient across the transect, acid-volatile sulphide was not significantly correlated to bacterial community structure. We conclude that the bioaccessible fraction of metals to bacteria is partly comprised of particulates, and porewater alone is not a sufficient model for potential metal impact.

The detrital food web is a major nexus of energy flow in nearly all aquatic ecosystems. Energy enters this nexus by microbial assimilation of detrital carbon. To link microbiological variables with ecosystem process, it is necessary to understand the regulatory hierarchy that controls the distribution of microbial biomass and activity. Toward that goal, we investigated variability in microbial abundance and activities within the tidal freshwater estuary of the Hudson River. Surface sediments were collected from four contrasting sites: a mid-channel shoal, two types of wetlands, and a tributary confluence. These samples, collected in June to August 1992, were sorted into two to four size fractions, depending on the particle size distribution at each site. Each fraction was analyzed for bacterial biomass (by acridine orange direct counting), bacterial production (by 3H-thymidine incorporation into DNA), fungal biomass (by ergosterol extraction), fungal production (by biomass accrual), and the potential activities of seven extracellular enzymes involved in the degradation of detrital structural molecules. Decomposition rates for particulate organic carbon (POC) were estimated from a statistical model relating mass loss rates to endocellulase activity. Within samples, bacterial biomass and productivity were negatively correlated with particle size: Standing stocks and rates in the <63-m class were roughly twofold greater than in the >4-mm class. Conversely, fungal biomass was positively correlated with particle size, with standing stocks in the largest size class more than 1OX greater than in the smallest. Extracellular enzyme activities also differed significantly among size classes, with high carbohydrase activities associated with the largest particles, while oxidative activities predominated in the smallest size classes. Among sites, the mid-channel sediments had the lowest POC standing stock (2% of sediment dry mass) and longest turnover time (approximately 1.7 years), with bacterial productivity approximately equal to fungal (56 vs. 46 g C per gram POC per day, respectively). In the Typha wetland, POC standing stock was high (10%); turnover time was about 0.3 years; and 90% of the microbial productivity was fungal (670 vs. 84 g C per gram POC per day). The other two sites, a Trapa wetland and a tributary confluence, showed intermediate values for microbial productivity and POC turnover. Differences among sites were described by regression models that related the distribution of microbial biomass (r 2 = 0.98) and productivity (r 2 = 0.81) to particle size and carbon quality. These factors also determined POC decomposition rates. Net microbial production efficiency (production rate/decomposition rate) averaged 10.6%, suggesting that the sediments were exporting large quantities of unassimilated dissolved organic carbon into the water column. Our results suggest that studies of carbon processing in large systems, like the Hudson River estuary, can be facilitated by regression models that relate microbial dynamics to more readily measured parameters.
