The pollination biology and breeding system of Vellozia squamata (Velloziaceae), a species of cerrado vegetation in Central Brazil, were studied. V. squamata is unusual in being pollinated by a few, generalist bee species despite having very large flowers, and having a distinctive pulsed flowering phenology. The species is self-incompatible but with a late-acting, post-fertilization rejection mechanism.  相似文献

? Premise of the study: Vellozia hirsuta forms a complex presenting wide morphological and anatomical variation, resulting in five specific names and 14 morpho-anatomical patterns occurring in disjunct populations. We carried out a phylogeographical study to investigate the existence of correlation among the genetic and morphological patterns within this complex, and to determine whether it is composed of various species or should be treated as an ochlospecies, a species having widely polymorphic and weakly polytypic complex variation, with morphological characteristics varying independently. ? Methods: We carried out phylogeographical analyses using cpDNA rpl32F-trnL intergenic region. ? Key results: We found 20 haplotypes in 23 populations sampled. The populations are genetically structured (Φ(ST) = 0.818) into four phylogeographical groups demonstrating geographical structuring but with no correlation with morpho-anatomical patterns. Our analyses do not support recognizing any of the species now synonymized under Vellozia hirsuta. The northern populations were the most genetically differentiated and could be considered a distinct taxon, as they are also morphologically different. ? Conclusions: It is recommended that Vellozia hirsuta be considered a single enormously variable species. The patterns of variation within V. hirsuta probably are related to climatic changes that occurred during the Pleistocene Epoch in tropical Brazil when reductions in forest cover favored the expansion of V. hirsuta populations into extensive lowland areas. The expansion of forest cover at the end of the glaciations would have again restricted the occurrence of campos rupestres vegetation to high elevations, which constitute the current centers of diversity of this species.  相似文献

We have studied the genetic diversity of three plant species: Angelica archangelica (Apiacieae), Bistorta vivipara (Polygonaceae) and Viscaria alpina (Caryophyllaceae) along the free-flowing Vindel River in northern Sweden. The plants differ in reproductive strategy. A archangelica and V. alpina are insect pollinated outbreeders while B. vivipara reproduces with apomixis through bulbils. The seeds of A. archangelica may float for over a year, while the propagules (seeds and bulbils, respectively) of V. alpina and B. vivipara float for less than two days. Genetic diversity was assessed using starch gel electrophoresis. The clonal diversity of B. vivipara measured by Simpson's index (D) ranged between 0.78 and 0.99. Only a few clones were shared between localities. The average percentages polymorphic loci and mean He based on polymorphic loci for V. alpina over all localities were 23.1 and 0.15, respectively. Wright's F-statistics showed a significant overall deficit of heterozygotes. The diversity of A. archangelica was found to increase downstream. Genetic diversity of each species is sufficiently high to be used in studies on hydrochory. Dispersal appears to be related to the floating ability of progagules.  相似文献

The Espinhaço Range, in eastern Brazil, has a peculiar landscape that has influenced the vegetation pattern of the region because of its valleys, canyons, ranges and disjunct rock outcrops found at high elevations. In this region, the vegetation type known as campos rupestres (rupestrian fields), which occurs in the disjunct outcrops, has high levels of species richness and endemism. Vellozia gigantea, a 6-m tall dracenoid monocot, is a vulnerable species endemic to this vegetation and has a narrow distribution that extends approximately 27 km. This region is located in a disturbed area, where populations are divided into three geographical groups, separated by a canyon and a valley. For this study, we used ISSR markers to measure the genetic diversity of the species and test the hypothesis that the canyon and the valley constitute geographical barriers to gene flow in V. gigantea. Nine populations and 173 individuals were analyzed using nine ISSR primers, which produced 89 fragments. In spite of being a vulnerable species with a narrow distribution, the populations of V. gigantea have high genetic diversity (mean percentage of polymorphic loci = 56.6%; mean Shannon’s index of diversity = 0.278; mean expected heterozygosity = 0.183). Genetic divergence among populations was high (ΦST = 0.28), and principal coordinate, neighborjoining and Bayesian analyses showed that only the canyon may constitute a partial barrier to gene flow in this species. Groups of populations separated by the canyon should be managed separately because they contain different gene pools.  相似文献

Plant communities in which the herb layer is dominated by Vellozia crinita were surveyed in seven mountain ranges with a complex comprising open herbaceous or savanna-like montane vegetation overlying quartzite and sand, locally known as “campos rupestres” in the State of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, by means of 92 vegetation relevés (totaling approx. 4629 m2). Vellozia crinita displayed a growth strategy which is rare among the Velloziaceae south of the Espinhaço mountain chain. While most species of Vellozia are phanerophytes with erect caudices and grow exclusively on or among rock outcrops, V. crinita is a caespitose chamaephyte with a profusely branched, repent caudex which grows under the ground or very slightly exposed. It forms cushions which stabilize convex mounds of colluvial sand, thus occupying a distinct niche in the “campos rupestres”. One association, two subassociations and two variants of the white-sand vegetation component are described as new.  相似文献

Begonia dregei and B. homonyma (Begoniaceae), rare plants endemic to coastal forests of eastern South Africa, are two closely related species with high levels of variation among populations in the shape of leaves. Distribution of genetic variation and genetic relatedness were investigated in 12 populations of B. dregei and seven of B. homonyma using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Twelve of the 15 enzyme loci examined were polymorphic, but only seven loci were polymorphic within at least one population. Genetic diversity measures indicated that the among-population gene differentiation represents >90% of the total genetic component in both species considered individually or combined. This indicated restricted gene flow, consistent with the limited dispersal abilities of Begonia generally and the ancient separation of isolated forest patches. Genetic distances among populations are much higher than usually found within species. Allozyme data provide no support for the recognition of B. dregei and B. homonyma as distinct species.  相似文献

The pollination biology of four species of passionflower was studied in south-eastern Brazil, specifically the importance of chemical features of floral nectar, pigments and odours. All species required pollinators to produce fruits: P. alata was pollinated by bees, P. speciosa by hummingbirds, and P. galbana and P. mucronata by bats. Pollinators consumed nectar as a food source. The activity of vertebrate pollinators reflected resource availability: they foraged when large amounts of nectar were available and when quantitative resource predictability was greater. The nectar of the vertebrate-pollinated species was richer in cholesterol and phospholipids, and had a potassium-sodium ratio higher than 1.0. For all species, the light absorption of flowers was paralleled by the pollinators' visual spectral sensitivity. This first report on Passiflora floral volatile compounds showed that there was a greater chemical class diversity among the species pollinated by animals with an acute olfactory sense, such as bees and bats. Benzenoid alcohols were the most represented compounds. The fragrances contained compounds that occur in other plant species and in the exocrine secretions of bees. This study shows a strong association between pollinators and the attracting and rewarding features of flowers.  相似文献

Tradescantia hirsuticaulis, the hairy-stemmed spiderwort, is an insect-pollinated perennial plant species found primarily on rock outcrops in Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama. Although populations of T. hirsuticaulis are rare and scattered, local populations are frequently large. Levels of genetic variation were assessed for 13 populations representing the species' range in these three states. Despite the disjunct distribution of this habitat specialist and apparent lack of specialized seed and pollen dispersal mechanisms, exceptionally high levels of genetic variation are maintained within the species, with a moderate level of variation (18%) found among populations. Twenty-nine of the 33 loci resolved (88%) were polymorphic within the species; the mean number of loci polymorphic within populations was 54%. The mean number of alleles per polymorphic locus was 3.24 across all populations and averaged 2.37 within populations. Genetic diversity was 0.206 for the species, whereas mean population genetic diversity was 0.157, both much higher than the average for other short-lived herbaceous perennials. Estimated levels of gene flow were moderate (Nm = 0.95), and a significant association between geographic distance and genetic distance between populations was found (r = 0.68; P < 0.0001). Habitat destruction is the major threat to this genetically diverse species. Since gene flow among its highly dispersed populations is limited, diminution or extinction of local populations could jeopardize the long-term evolutionary potential of this species.  相似文献

The main objective of this investigation was to study the pollination characteristics of two types of Amazonian rain forest at plant community level. Seasonally inundated forest was compared with upland (tierra firme) forest. The study focused on plant species in the canopy. The pollination spectra show that in both forests most canopy trees and lianas are pollinated by small bees, large bees, butterflies or by small, relatively unspecialized insects. In the upland forest small bees are the most important pollinators (32% of all species of trees and lianas are pollinated by them), whereas large bees are predominant in the floodplain (22%). Other pollinators, like hummingbirds, bats, moths, and beetles are less common (>10%), but always somewhat more important in the flood plain than in the upland forest. Bees are the most common pollinators of epiphytes. In the flood plain forest, flies are also important as epiphyte pollinators (19%), whereas in the upland forest hummingbirds pollinate more epiphytes. The phenological patterns are quite similar in both the upland and the flood plain. We found a peak in flowering in the transition period between the wet and the dry season. Flowering activity was lowest during the wet season. Differentiation in sexual systems was correlated with life form. Dioecy and monoecy were found mostly among tree species. Most species of all life forms though were hermaphroditic. No difference with respect to the relative importance of sexual systems was found between the two forest types.  相似文献

Understanding how populations are genetically and demographically connected is beneficial for species management, since gene flow and dispersal contribute to genetic diversity and population persistence. For hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis), an aquatic salamander species experiencing dramatic declines in population size, fine-scale (i.e. within river) patterns of genetic diversity and gene flow are not well understood. Previous findings indicate that hellbenders are habitat specialists that exhibit extreme site fidelity and low vagility, suggesting that gene flow is restricted among the several, discrete habitat patches within a river. Using 15 polymorphic microsatellite loci and 497 hellbender samples from four Missouri rivers, we assessed fine-scale patterns of genetic diversity in order to infer population connectivity and aid in population management. Results indicate moderate levels of genetic variation (HO = 0.66–0.78) with little differentiation among habitat patches (avg. FST = 0.002) and no evidence of isolation by distance. Our data suggest that hellbender gene flow has been extensive even among habitat patches separated by distances greater than >100 km. These results are useful for hellbender management, especially in terms of making informed decisions regarding restorative releases of captively propagated individuals.  相似文献

Inselbergs occur as mostly dome-shaped rock outcrops in all climatic and vegetational zones of the tropics. Consisting of Precambrian granites and gneisses, they form ancient and stable landscape elements. Due to harsh edaphic and microclimatic conditions, the vegetation of inselbergs differs markedly from those of the surroundings. Monocotyledonous mats form one of the most characteristic communities of this ecosystem. The floristic composition of this community was studied on six inselbergs located in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest. Dominating are Bromeliaceae ( Alcantarea , Encholirium ), Velloziaceae ( Vellozia ), Cactaceae ( Coleocephalocereus ) and the Cyperaceae Trilepis . The alpha diversity of the mats was relatively uniform among the six outcrops. However, beta diversity varied considerably between the different sites. Beta diversity was highest at the most speciose locality indicating a high degree of stochasticity in colonization. In contrast to the low diversity mats on West African inselbergs, the Brazilian rock outcrops bear a floristically more diverse mat community rich in endemics. Thus the edaphically controlled inselberg vegetation reflects the outstanding diversity of the Mata Atlaântica. Possibly the high species richness of mats on East Brazilian inselbergs is a consequence of a large species-pool. The processes that regulate regional and local diversity in the Mata Atlaântica are not fully clear. It is assumed that historical (i.e. long-term stability) and biotic (i.e. evolutionary interchange of taxa between canopies and rock outcrops followed by differentiation of local populations) conditions have promoted high rates of speciation and their coexistence in isolated habitats. A danger to the unique vegetation of East Brazilian inselbergs is the establishment of invasive weeds.  相似文献

Vaccinium section Cyanococcus comprises diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid species (x = 12) all of which are highly self-sterile. In order to assess the distribution of genetic variation within and among the diploids, population genetic analyses of allozyme data were conducted on three species: V. elliottii, V. myrtilloides, and V. tenellum. Populations were located throughout the range of these taxa in eastern North America. Data were collected at 20 loci, 12 of which are mendelian based on formal genetic analyses. Consistent with expectations for out-crossing taxa, these species exhibited high levels of variation within populations. Eighteen loci were polymorphic with the number and frequency of alleles varying among taxa. Mean values for the number of alleles per polymorphic locus, proportion of polymorphic loci, and expected heterozygosity were 2.8, 48.2, and 0.148, respectively. High infraspecific genetic identities exceeding 0.9 indicated that these taxa are homogeneous. All populations were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium with slight heterozygote excess observed in V. myrtilloides and V. tenellum. Although total genetic diversity was lower than that observed for other predominantly out-crossing species, it was apportioned similarly. The majority could be attributed to differences among individuals within populations. Conspecific populations were relatively undifferentiated with genetic differentiation similar to other self-incompatible species.  相似文献

Covariation among traits can modify the evolutionary trajectory of complex structures. This process is thought to operate at a microevolutionary scale, but its long‐term effects remain controversial because trait covariation can itself evolve. Flower morphology, and particularly floral trait (co)variation, has been envisioned as the product of pollinator‐mediated selection. Available evidence suggests that major changes in pollinator assemblages may affect the joint expression of floral traits and their phenotypic integration. We expect species within a monophyletic lineage sharing the same pollinator type will show not only similarity in trait means but also similar phenotypic variance‐covariance structures. Here, we tested this expectation using eighteen Salvia species pollinated either by bees or by hummingbirds. Our findings indicated a nonsignificant multivariate phylogenetic signal and a decoupling between means and variance‐covariance phenotypic matrices of floral traits during the evolution to hummingbird pollination. Mean trait value analyses revealed significant differences between bee‐ and hummingbird‐pollinated Salvia species although fewer differences were detected in the covariance structure between groups. Variance‐covariance matrices were much more similar among bee‐ than hummingbird‐pollinated species. This pattern is consistent with the expectation that, unlike hummingbirds, bees physically manipulate the flower, presumably exerting stronger selection pressures favouring morphological convergence among species. Overall, we conclude that the evolution of hummingbird pollination proceeded through different independent transitions. Thus, although the evolution of hummingbird pollination led to a new phenotypic optimum, the process involved the diversification of the covariance structure.  相似文献

Dyckia is the third most diverse genus from Pitcairnoideae, pollinated mainly by insects and hummingbirds. In this study, we evaluated demography, reproductive biology and pollination of Dyckia excelsa, a saxicolous species typical of ironstone outcrops. It occurs in groupings composed of genets, ramets and seedlings and bloomed several times, principally in September, with fruiting and dispersing of seeds in November. The anthesis is diurnal and flowers remain open for 2 days. Nectar volume decreased during the anthesis, whereas nectar sugar concentration remained constant. Dyckia excelsa is partially self-compatible and xenogamic; the highest fruit set was observed in the control and cross-pollination treatments; high seed germination rates were observed in all treatments. Flowers have the ornithophilous syndrome, but hummingbirds, bees and butterflies visited them. The occurrence of groupings with multiple inflorescences could contribute to geitonogamy. The high number of flowers during a year supplies food resources and ensures the fidelity of pollinators.  相似文献

Due to their high degree of polymorphism, microsatellites are considered useful tools for studying population genetics. Nevertheless, studies of genetic diversity in stingless bees by means of these primers have revealed a low level of polymorphism, possibly the consequence of the heterologous primers used, since in most cases these were not specifically designed for the species under consideration. Herein we compared the number of polymorphic loci and alleles per locus, as well as observed heterozygosity in Melipona rufiventris and M. mondury populations, using specific and heterologous primers. The use of specific primers placed in evidence the greater frequency of polymorphic loci and alleles per locus, besides an expressive increase in observed heterozygosity in M. rufiventris and M. mondury, thereby reinforcing the idea that populational studies should be undertaken by preferably using species-specific microsatellite primers.  相似文献

We used enzyme electrophoresis to evaluate genetic diversity in 32 populations of Calystegia collina, a clonal plant species endemic to serpentine outcrops in northern California (USA). Of 34 loci examined 56% were polymorphic, but on average only 17% were polymorphic within local populations. Neither the total number of alleles nor the number of multilocus genotypes differed significantly between populations in small vs. large serpentine outcrops. Genetic and geographic distances between populations were positively correlated, but this relationship was not significantly affected by the isolation of serpentine outcrops. Populations were highly differentiated (F(st) = 0.417) and little genetic variation was explained by geographic region or serpentine outcrop.Observed heterozygosity within populations almost always exceeded Hardy-Weinberg expectations. In many populations, all 30 sample ramets were uniformly heterozygous at one or more loci yet were genetically variable at other loci. These results imply that many C. collina populations originate from one or a few genetic founders, with little recruitment from seeds. Genetic variation within uniformly heterozygous populations must be the product of multiple, closely related founders or somatic mutations within the population. We conclude that vegetative reproduction, perhaps coupled with somatic mutation, helps maintain genetic diversity in these isolated but long-lived populations.  相似文献

Summary Gene flow was investigated in a natural population of Lotus corniculatus L. (Fabaceae) using a combination of pollen and seed dispersal studies and a recombinant DNA technique. The population is spatially heterogeneous and grows with Empetrum nigrum. L. corniculatus is pollinated by the pollen-collecting bumblebee Bombus lapidarius L. Most pollinator flights occurred within patches, as bees usually visit nearest-neighbour plants, show no marked directionality, and forage mostly within patches. Gene flow by seeds is also limited, reinforcing the pattern of gene flow within patches. However, 2.6% of pollinator flights are between patches and considerable pollen carryover also occurs. Thus, gene flow between patches is potentially sufficient to retard or prevent genetic differentiation in spite of the patchy sub-structuring of the population. A sub-set of the population was analysed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) to document the actual gene flow pattern of the population. The DNA analysis revealed significant levels of genetic differentiation between the patches. The level of gene flow that can be inferred from the distribution of genetic variation is surprisingly restricted, as compared to gene flow inferred from pollinator behaviour, and emphasizes that stochastic processes like genetic drift and founder effects may have a strong impact on the prevailing genetic structure.  相似文献

Population structure, diversity and gene flow in four populations of Aciphylla glaucescens were studied using allozymes. Six of the seven putative loci were polymorphic in at least one population. Within populations the mean percentage of polymorphic loci was 68%. Gene diversity for Aciphylla glaucescens (H-e = 0.258) was greater at the species level compared with other outcrossing, wind pollinated plant species (H-e = 0.162). The mean diversity among populations of A. glaucescens (F-ST = 0.256) was also greater than that reported for most other species with similar breeding systems. Estimated gene flow (N-m) between populations was low, with only 0.72 migrants per generation. The high gene diversity of A. glaucescens may be due to the widespread distribution, obligate outcrossing and high fecundity of this species.  相似文献
