The Babassu palm is a very important forest resource for over 300 000 families in Maranhao State, Northeastern Brazil. The rudimentary nature of the babassu kernel extraction process employed by the peasantry has been blamed for being one of the key factors of the crisis in the babassu oil industry economy. This paper provides the results of the use of a new model for sustainable exploitation of babassu palm forests and integral fruit processing at the village and farm- level. The new model includes the coordination of fruit collection and storage, and the gradual replacement of the traditional system of manual breaking by mechanized integral processing at local level. The machinery consists of a dehusking machine (to separate epicarp and mesocarp), a breaking machine (to crack the dehusked fruits), and a machine to separate the small pieces of broken endocarpfrom the kernels. The preliminary results arising from the application of the new model are shown and discussed.  相似文献

The fuel characteristics of solid biofuels derived from biomass that is abundantly available in Malaysia are presented. The objectives of the study were to characterize fuel properties of oil palm biomass (empty fruit bunch (EFB) and oil palm trunk (OPT)) and wood from a range of fast growing timber species (Albizia falcataria, Acacia spp., Endospermum spp. and Macaranga spp.), inclusive and exclusive of bark. Among the fast-growing timber species, the higher heating values ranged from 4288 cal g-1 to 4383 cal g-1 for wood inclusive of bark, and 4134 cal g-1 to 4343 cal g-1 for wood exclusive of bark. The inclusive of bark portion in the biomass sample generally increased the heating value except for Macaranga spp. Empty fruit bunch and oil palm trunk had heating values of 4315 cal g-1 and 4104 cal g-1, respectively. Ash-forming elements and trace elements were much higher in the timber species samples inclusive of bark than samples exclusive of bark. On the other hand, oil palm biomass contained higher ash-forming elements and trace elements than the wood from the fast growing timber species. The European energy crops show higher HHV, Cl and Si content but lower K, Mg, Na and P compared to the local biomass used in this study. The data obtained from this study can serve as a foundation for the selection of suitable biomass to be used as solid fuel, or as a reference on the fabrication of conversion systems for the selection of biomass solid fuel.  相似文献

The date palm Phoenix dactylifera has played an important role in the day-to-day life of the people for the last 7000 years. Today worldwide production, utilization and industrialization of dates are continuously increasing since date fruits have earned great importance in human nutrition owing to their rich content of essential nutrients. Tons of date palm fruit wastes are discarded daily by the date processing industries leading to environmental problems. Wastes such as date pits represent an average of 10% of the date fruits. Thus, there is an urgent need to find suitable applications for this waste. In spite of several studies on date palm cultivation, their utilization and scope for utilizing date fruit in therapeutic applications, very few reviews are available and they are limited to the chemistry and pharmacology of the date fruits and phytochemical composition, nutritional significance and potential health benefits of date fruit consumption. In this context, in the present review the prospects of valorization of these date fruit processing by-products and wastes’ employing fermentation and enzyme processing technologies towards total utilization of this valuable commodity for the production of biofuels, biopolymers, biosurfactants, organic acids, antibiotics, industrial enzymes and other possible industrial chemicals are discussed.  相似文献

Microbial lipase preparations from Thermomyces lanuginosus (TLL) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (PFL) were immobilized by multipoint covalent attachment on Toyopearl AF-amino-650M resin and the most active and thermal stable derivatives used to catalyze the transesterification reaction of babassu and palm oils with ethanol in solvent-free media. For this, different activating agents, mainly glutaraldehyde, glycidol and epichlorohydrin were used and immobilization parameters were estimated based on the hydrolysis of olive oil emulsion and butyl butyrate synthesis. TLL immobilized on glyoxyl-resin allowed obtaining derivatives with the highest hydrolytic activity (HAder) and thermal stability, between 27 and 31 times more stable than the soluble lipase. Although PFL derivatives were found to be less active and thermally stables, similar formation of butyl butyrate concentrations were found for both TLL and PFL derivatives. The highest conversion into biodiesel was found in the transesterification of palm oil catalyzed by both TLL and PFL glyoxyl-derivatives.  相似文献

The babassu palm (Orbignya phalerata) is an important source of oil and charcoal in Brazil. In some areas it grows in association with O. eichleri, and where their distribution is sympatric, a third palm is found. This taxon was described by Bondar in 1954 as O. teixeirana. As a result of intense fieldwork and subsequent morphological and anatomical studies, we conclude that O. teixeirana is a hybrid between O. phalerata and O. eichleri and propose a change in its status to reflect this new understanding of its origin.  相似文献

Leaf area is an important parameter in oil palm breeding as it is positively correlated with oil yield. However, measurement of leaf area is tedious and also destructive. In the present study, a breeding population with 145 palms derived from a cross between Deli Dura and Avros Pisifera was used to construct a high-density linkage map and identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) for leaf area in oil palm. Using genotyping by sequencing, a linkage map containing 2413 SNPs was constructed. The total length of the linkage map was 1161.89 cM, with an average marker spacing of 0.48 cM. Based on the continuous phenotyping of leaf area from 2010 to 2015, two suggestive QTL for leaf area were mapped on chromosomes (Chr) 3 and 9. The allelic effects of the QTL associated with leaf area in the mapping population were estimated by linear regression using ordinary least squares method. The QTL on Chr 9 explained 13.3% of phenotypic variation for leaf area. A candidate gene, ARC5, within the narrow interval of QTL on Chr 9 was identified. The gene was significantly higher expressed in leaf than root and fruit of oil palm. This high-quality and SNP-based map supplies a base to fine map QTL for agronomic traits in oil palm, and the markers closely linked to the stable QTL may be used in marker-assisted selection in oil palm breeding.  相似文献

A pool of hydrolases with 21.4 U g−1 lipase activity was produced through solid-state fermentation of the fungus Penicillium restrictum in waste from the Orbignya oleifera (babassu) oil processing industry. Enzymatic hydrolysis and anaerobic biodegradability tests were conducted on poultry slaughterhouse effluents with varying oil and grease contents (150–1200 mg l−1) and solid enzymatic pool concentrations (0.1–1.0% w/v). Enhanced anaerobic treatment efficiency relative to raw effluent was achieved when a 0.1% concentration of enzymatic pool was used in the pre-hydrolysis stage with 1200 mg oil and grease l−1 (chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of 85% vs. 53% and biogas production of 175 ml vs. 37 ml after 4 d).  相似文献

Contamination of soil by petroleum hydrocarbons is becoming prevalent in Malaysia. Infiltration of soil contamination into groundwater poses a great threat to the ecosystem and human health. Bioremediation can occur naturally or can be enhanced with supplementation of microorganisms and fertilizers. However, fertilizers are expensive and therefore alternative nutrient-rich biomaterials are required. In this study, two organic wastes from agricultural industry (i.e., sugarcane bagasse and oil palm empty fruit bunch) were investigated for possible enhanced bioremediation of soil contaminated with Tapis crude oil. Two bacterial strains isolated and characterized previously (i.e., Pseudomonas aeruginosa UKMP-14T and Acinetobacter baumannii UKMP-12T) were used in this study. Sugarcane bagasse (5% and 15%, w/w) and oil palm empty fruit bunch (20%, w/w) were mixed with soil (500 g) spiked with Tapis crude oil (3%, v/w). The treated soils as well as controls were incubated for 20 days under controlled conditions. Sampling was carried out every four days to measure the number of bacterial colonies (CFU/g) and to determine the percentage of oil degradation by gas chromatography. The two biostimulating agents were able to maintain the soil moisture holding capacity, pH, and temperature at 38-40% volumetric moisture content (VMC), 7.0, and 29–30°C; respectively. The growth of bacteria consortium after 20 days in the treatment with sugarcane bagasse and oil palm empty fruit bunch had increased to 10.3 CFU/g and 9.5 CFU/g, respectively. The percentage of hydrocarbon degradation was higher in the soil amended with sugarcane bagasse (100%) when compared to that of oil palm empty fruit bunch (97%) after 20 days. Our results demonstrated the potential of sugarcane bagasse and oil palm empty fruit bunch as good substrates for enhanced bioremediation of soil contaminated with petroleum crude oil.  相似文献

The degradation of triglycerides in oil palm fruit due to an endogenous lipase in the pulp is the main reason for acidification of palm oil, which causes major economic losses and is currently mainly associated with the FLL1 gene. We designed this study to identify all the major genes controlling differences in acidity and lipase activity in the oil palm fruit mesocarp and determine a molecular markers kit to allow marker-assisted selection of commercial varieties with low acidity. Not only one gene (FLL1) but three closely linked genes including FLL1 were found and characterized in LM2T_EgCIR184O12c, a bacterial artificial chromosome sequence of 231 kb. Intra-gene PCR-based markers were designed for these genes. A QTL gene co-localization analysis for oil acidity (percentage of fatty acids released) was performed on two mapping populations. It evidenced a single major QTL at our lipase gene loci, explaining 84 to 92% of phenotypic variation, and validating the main genetic control of palm oil acidification by FLL1 and/or by the two new lipase genes. The three lipase genes had high homology to demonstrated triacylglycerol lipases. While FLL1 shows the highest expression levels, the two other genes may also contribute to oil acidity. Our molecular markers of lipase genes and the associated major QTL is an important step towards marker-assisted selection of commercial varieties with low acidity.  相似文献

The popularity of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) fruit is increasing, therefore the demand for high-quality date palm fruit with less or no chemical treatment is the topic of interest for date producers and consumers. The quality of date palm fruit is much dependent on its postharvest handling and processing. For preventing the degradation and maintenance of the high quality of dates during the storage an appropriate harvest and post-harvest processes are required. The process should control the biotic and abiotic factors like insects, fungus, temperature, as well as handling and processing of dates. Therefore, in this work, we reviewed the literature related to the protection of date fruits during their post-harvest life. The commercially viable advance and updated techniques that can be used to avoid storage losses and problems while keeping fruit quality (nutritional, color, flavor, and texture) and microbial safety under optimal conditions are discussed.  相似文献

Increasing prices and demand for biofuel and cooking oil from importer countries have caused a remarkable expansion of oil palm plantations in Indonesia. In this paper, we attempt to monitor the expansion of oil palm plantations on peat land and in tropical forests. We measure the GHG emissions from the land conversion activities at provincial scale. Using Landsat images from three different periods (1990s, 2000s and 2012), we classified LULC of the Riau Province, which is the largest oil palm producing region in Indonesia. A hybrid method of integration, generated by combining automatic processing and manual analysis, yields the best results. We found that the tropical rainforest cover decreased from ∼63% in the 1990s to ∼37% in the 2000s. By 2012, the remaining tropical rainforest cover was only ∼22%. From the 1990s to the 2000s, conversion of forests and peat lands was the primary source of emissions, total CO2 emitted to the atmosphere was estimated at ∼26.6 million tCO2.y-1, with 40.62% and 59.38% of the emissions from conversion of peat lands and forests, respectively. Between 2000 and 2012, the total CO2 emitted to the atmosphere was estimated at ∼5.2 million tCO2. y-1, with 69.94% and 27.62% of the emissions from converted peat lands and converted forests, respectively. The results show that in the Riau Province, the oil palm industry boomed in the period from 1990 to 2000, with transformation of tropical forest and peat land as the primary source of emissions. The decrease of CO2 emissions in the period from 2000 to 2012 is possibly due to the enforcement of a moratorium on deforestation.  相似文献

The ungurahua palm (Oenocarpus bataua subsp.bataua) is widely used throughout the Amazon Basin for its thatch, fibers, wood, and edible fruits. The fruits of this species are especially important to indigenous peoples and yield a high quality oil. This study examines the use of this species by the Siona people of the Ecuadorian Amazon in the Cuyabeno Faunistic Reserve. The reproductive phenology, fruit production, and relationship between vegetative characteristics and fruit production is explored here. Fruit production varies greatly from palm to palm with a range of approximately 500–7000 fruits biennially. This amounts to approximately 700 kg/ha every two years. Height, diameter breast height (dbh), and number of leaves on an individual are poor predictors of tree productivity. Reproductive histories of individual palms are examined. The economic potential of this species and the implications of overharvesting are discussed.  相似文献

Protoplasts were enzymatically prepared from the mesocarp of two species of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq. and E. oleifera HBK and Cortes) 16–20 weeks after anthesis and from rapidly multiplying embryogenic cultures of E. guineensis. The protoplasts were purified by density gradient centrifugation in 20% (w/v) sucrose. Radioactive incorporation studies showed that the protoplasts metabolized [1-14C]acetate to lipids, water-soluble compounds and 14CO2. The [14C]fatty acids obtained consisted mainly of C16: 0, C18: 0 and C18: 1. C16: 1, a very minor fatty acid in palm oil, was also labelled and accounted for 8–39% of total fatty acids synthesized by the mesocarp and embryogenic culture protoplasts. The ratio of labelled C18: 0 to C18: 1 was found to vary with the age of the fruit from which the protoplasts were prepared. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) of the labelled lipids showed the presence of all neutral acylglycerol classes. However the distribution of radiolabel in the various classes differed from those previously reported for oil palm mesocarp [K.C. Oo et al. Lipids, 20 (1985) 205] and embryoid tissue slices [E. Turnham and D.H. Northcote, Phytochem., 23 (1984) 35]. Ozonolysis showed that all the labelled C18: 1 acid was vaccenic acid.  相似文献

To better understand lipid biosynthesis in oil palm mesocarp, in particular the differences in gene regulation leading to and including de novo fatty acid biosynthesis, a multi-platform metabolomics technology was used to profile mesocarp metabolites during six critical stages of fruit development in comparatively high- and low-yielding oil palm populations. Significantly higher amino acid levels preceding lipid biosynthesis and nucleosides during lipid biosynthesis were observed in a higher yielding commercial palm population. Levels of metabolites involved in glycolysis revealed interesting divergence of flux towards glycerol-3-phosphate, while carbon utilization differences in the TCA cycle were proven by an increase in malic acid/citric acid ratio. Apart from insights into the regulation of enhanced lipid production in oil palm, these results provide potentially useful metabolite yield markers and genes of interest for use in breeding programmes.  相似文献

Queen palm seeds (Syagrus romanzoffiana) are a vital source of nutrients for Ingram's squirrel (Guerlinguetus ingrami), a common inhabitant of the Atlantic forest biome of Brazil. G. ingrami acts as both a seed predator and disperser of this important palm; however, little is known about how G. ingrami selects or efficiently opens queen palm seeds. The objectives of this study were to: (1) investigate the squirrel's capacity to determine the germinal orifice among the fruit's three pores, which permits more efficient opening of the fruit; (2) assess whether the thickness and size of the fruit endocarp influence the squirrel's palm selection during foraging; and (3) evaluate whether the rodents preferentially select fruits with invertebrate infestations. To answer these questions, we used a series of behavioral experiments measuring patterns of squirrel feeding behavior (fruit opening, fruit selection, and patch selection), controlling for environmental variables. We found that (1) squirrels identify the queen palm germinal pore by its greater relative depth to the other pores; (2) the average size and thickness of fruit does not influence the squirrel's choice of palm for foraging; and (3) squirrels preferentially consume fruits infested by invertebrates. The development of methods for more efficient processing of queen palm fruit highlights the importance of this resource for G. ingrami. In addition, due to its preferential selection of infested fruits, G. ingrami may benefit palms by reducing parasite population loads.  相似文献

Actinomycete strain AUM 00500 was 99.5 % similar to Streptomyces sanglieri NBRC 100784T and was evaluated for antagonistic activity towards Ganoderma boninense, the causative fungus of basal stem rot of oil palm. The strain showed strong antifungal activity towards G. boninense in in vitro and SEM analysis showed various modes of inhibition of the fungus. Ethyl acetate extracts of single culture and inhibition zone of cross-plug culture by HPLC indicated that strain AUM 00500 produced two different antibiotics of the glutarimide group namely cycloheximide and actiphenol. In greenhouse trials, oil palm seed treated with spores of S. sanglieri strain AUM 00500 at 109 cfu/ml showed significant (P < 0.05) increase in oil palm seedlings growth when compared to the control. Streptomyces sanglieri strain AUM 00500 successfully colonised the epidermal surface of the roots of treated oil palm seedlings and it was recovered from root fragments plated on starch casein agar.  相似文献
