To investigate the effect of repeated regrouping and relocation (R&R) on behaviour of steers, 72 Holstein–Friesian (14-month-old; 441 ± 3.2 kg) steers were assigned to either control (n = 30; C) or regrouped (n = 42; R) treatments and housed six per pen in 12 pens. The R steers were exposed to six R&R over 84 days. New pen cohorts were allowed to stabilise for 14 days and none of the R steers were allowed to share the same pen or pen mates, where or with whom, they were previously housed. Control steers were housed in the same pen with the same pen mates. Each steer was marked on its back with an individual identification code. Twelve cameras were used to observe and record behaviour for each pen allowing observation of all individual steers continuously for a week following each R&R. The following behaviours were recorded for each steer: lying, standing, eating, drinking, head-to-head contact with another animal while not eating, head contact with the body of another animal and bodily contact with none, one, two or three steers. Behaviour was observed by instantaneous scan sampling after each R&R, at 2 min intervals for 2 h on day 1; at further 20 min intervals on days 1 and 2; and at 120 min intervals from day 3 to 7. Where appropriate, the % of time spent in each behaviour was calculated from the data on total counts in each behavioural category. The total count data were analysed by χ2-statistics for all behavioural categories. Steers were weighed before each R&R. Average daily gain from day 0 to 84 was analysed by ANOVA. During the first 2 h observation period following mixing, R steers displayed a greater (P < 0.05) % of time standing (following the first to sixth R&R), eating (first to fourth and sixth R&R) and drinking (first, third and fourth R&R) than control steers. In the 20 min observational period, a greater % (P < 0.05) of time was spent standing, eating and drinking in R than in C steers following each R&R. In the 120 min observation period, R steers spent a greater (P < 0.05) % of time lying with less body contact behaviours than C steers, and these findings increased in the fourth, fifth and sixth R&R. These data suggest that there was partial adaptation to repeated R&R at the first two R&R followed by complete adaptation at the third and subsequent R&R, with no detrimental effect on animal performance.  相似文献

Yolk fatty acid (FA) concentrations and egg quality were evaluated with respect to the inclusion of different levels of marine fish oil (MFO) and linseed oil (LO) in a basal diet. Ten diets were arranged factorially with two levels of MFO addition (15 and 17 g/kg) and five levels of linseed oil (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 g/kg). Two commercial feeds with no n-3 FA sources added, or containing 15 g MFO/kg served as controls for egg sensorial quality traits. Type of diet did not affect egg production traits, nor total fat content in yolk or saturated and monounsaturated FA concentration in yolk fat. An increase in the inclusion of MFO from 15 to 17 g/kg increased (P<0.05) egg yolk content of total n-3 FA, C20:5 n-3 and C22:6 n-3 by 3.3, 9.8 and 3.5%, respectively. Linseed oil addition increased linearly (P<0.001) the level of total n-3 FA and the proportion of C18:3 n-3, C20:5 n-3, C22:5 n-3 and C22:6 n-3 retained in yolk fat by respectively 131, 12.0, 6.9 and 20.7% between extreme diets. Efficiency of retention of n-3 FA decreased (P<0.001) with dietary level of n-3 FA, and with the dietary ratio of MFO to LO. Both MFO and LO addition decreased (P<0.001) C20:4 n-6 to C18:2 n-6 ratio in yolk. Sensorial quality of eggs was not affected by treatments and did not differ with respect of that obtained in commercial n-3 FA enriched eggs. No interaction was found between LO and MFO addition for any of the traits studied. Regression equations have been calculated in order to predict efficiency of retention and yolk fat content of LC n-3 and n-6 FA from dietary characteristics.  相似文献

Ethiopian cattle are under threat from uncontrolled mating practices and are at high risk of becoming genetically homogeneous. Therefore, to evaluate genetic diversity, population structure and degree of admixture, 30 microsatellite markers were genotyped using 351 DNA samples from 10 Ethiopian cattle populations and the Holstein breed. The mean number of alleles per cattle population ranged from 6.93 ± 2.12 in Sheko to 7.50 ± 2.35 in Adwa. The mean observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.674 ± 0.015 and 0.726 ± 0.019 respectively. Ethiopian cattle populations have maintained a high level of within-population genetic differentiation (98.7%), the remainder being accounted for by differentiation among populations (1.3%). A highly significant deficiency in heterozygotes was detected within populations ( F IS = 0.071; P  <   0.001) and total inbreeding ( F IT = 0.083; P  <   0.001). The study populations were highly admixed but distinct from pure Bos taurus and Bos indicus breeds. The various levels of admixture and high genetic diversity make Ethiopian cattle populations suitable for future genetic improvement and utilization under a wide range of agro-ecologies in Ethiopia.  相似文献

DM intake (DMI) for individual pens of cattle is recorded daily or averaged across each week by most commercial feedlots as an index of performance. Numerous factors impact DMI by feedlot cattle. Some are available at the start of the feedlot period (initial BW, sex), and others become available early in the feeding period (daily DMI during adaptation) or more continuously (daily DMI from the previous week). To evaluate the relative impact of these factors on daily DMI during individual weeks within the feedlot period, we employed a dataset compiled from 2009 to 2014 from one commercial feedlot, including 4 132 pens (485 458 cattle), which were split into two fractions: 80% were used to calculate DMI regressions on these factors to develop a prediction equation for mean DMI for each week of the feeding period, and 20% were reserved to test the adequacy of these prediction equations. Correlations were used to determine the relationship between all available variables with observed DMI. These variables were then included in the generalized least squares regression models. A veracity test of the model was performed against the reserved data. Daily DMI from previous week was the factor most highly correlated with daily DMI (P < 0.10) during from week 6 to week 31, accounting for approximately 70% of the variation, followed by mean daily DMI during adaptation period (weeks 1–4), including in the prediction model from weeks 5 to 12. Initial shrunk BW (ISBW) was the third most correlated factor, which was included in prediction equations from week 5 to week 20. Sex entered the prediction model only after week 8. Daily DMI for each test week within the feeding period was predicted closely (r2 = 0.98) by these four factors (RMSE = 0.155 kg). In conclusion, the mean daily DMI during each week of the finishing period for a pen of cattle could be predicted closely based on mean daily DMI intake during the previous week plus other variables available early in a feedlot period (daily DMI during adaptation period, ISBW and sex).  相似文献

Adding nitrate to the diet or increasing the concentration of dietary lipid are effective strategies for reducing enteric methane emissions. This study investigated their effect on health and performance of finishing beef cattle. The experiment was a two×two×three factorial design comprising two breeds (CHX, crossbred Charolais; LU, Luing); two basal diets consisting of (g/kg dry matter (DM), forage to concentrate ratios) 520 : 480 (Mixed) or 84 : 916 (Concentrate); and three treatments: (i) control with rapeseed meal as the main protein source replaced with either (ii) calcium nitrate (18 g nitrate/kg diet DM) or (iii) rapeseed cake (RSC, increasing acid hydrolysed ether extract from 25 to 48 g/kg diet DM). Steers (n=84) were allocated to each of the six basal diet×treatments in equal numbers of each breed with feed offered ad libitum. Blood methaemoglobin (MetHb) concentrations (marker for nitrate poisoning) were monitored throughout the study in steers receiving nitrate. After dietary adaptation over 28 days, individual animal intake, performance and feed efficiency were recorded for a test period of 56 days. Blood MetHb concentrations were low and similar up to 14 g nitrate/kg diet DM but increased when nitrate increased to 18 g nitrate/kg diet DM (P<0.001). An interaction between basal diet and day (P<0.001) indicated that MetHb% was consistently greater in Concentrate – than Mixed-fed steers at 18 g nitrate/kg diet DM. Maximum individual MetHb% was 15.4% (of total Hb), which is lower than considered clinically significant (30%). MetHb concentrations for individual steers remained consistent across time. Concentrate-fed steers were more efficient (lower residual feed intake (RFI) values) than Mixed-fed steers (P<0.01), with lower dry matter intake (DMI) (kg/day) (P<0.001) and similar average daily gain (ADG). CHX steers were more efficient (lower RFI; P<0.01) than LU steers with greater ADG (P<0.01), lower DMI (/kg BW; P<0.01) and lower fat depth (P<0.001). ADG, BW or DMI did not differ across dietary treatments (P>0.05). Neither basal diet nor treatment affected carcass quality (P>0.05), but CHX steers achieved a greater killing out proportion (P<0.001) than LU steers. Thus, adding nitrate to the diet or increasing the level of dietary lipid through the use of cold-pressed RSC, did not adversely affect health or performance of finishing beef steers when used within the diets studied.  相似文献

Fifteen six-eight month old steers and bulls weighing approximately 160 kg were inoculated orally with a virulent strain of Salmonella typhimurium. Three or four inoculated animals were confined in each of four pens, immediately after inoculation, with approximately 22 uninoculated cattle. The pen size in the experimental feedlot was 23 x 46 m. The 15 intentionally inoculated animals all became infected and excreted Salm. typhimurium in their faeces. Two of them died of salmonellosis and more than half the cattle penned with the inoculated animals became infected within 8 d after exposure. Twenty-four of the animals were still excreting salmonellas 71 d after initiation of the experiment.  相似文献

Group foraging can be beneficial for ungulates by decreasing the time required for vigilance, but it can also prove costly because of competition. To determine responses to gregarious behaviour, we studied foraging activity and vigilance of impala ( Aepyceros melampus ) near Kruger National Park, South Africa. We measured time spent foraging, vigilant, moving, grooming, engaging in social interactions and determined herd size and group distribution (i.e. density). We calculated accepted food abundance (AFA), food ingestion rate, steps per minute and percent vigilance for female, bachelor male and herd male impala. There was no relationship between herd size and vigilance, but vigilance decreased with increasing density ( t 1,311 = 4.91, P  <0.0001). Additionally, AFA decreased ( t 1,61 = 5.96, P  <0.0001) and steps per minute increased ( t 1,311 = 14.38, P  <   0.0001) as more individuals fed in close proximity to each other. Impala could be altering their behaviour to accommodate a perceived change in resources because of intraspecific competition and these adjustments might be related more to the distribution of herd members than to herd size. Further studies should examine the behaviour of gregarious animals in relation to the distribution of herd members in addition to group size.  相似文献

This study used spectral analysis in 2 separate experiments to examine feeding and lying behavior of Bos taurus steers under 2 housing treatments: a feedlot yard stocked at 12.0 m2 per head with a dry, firm pen surface (NDF) and a “high density ”(HDF) feedlot yard stocked at 6.0 m2 per head with a wet and muddy feedlot pen surface. The study conducted 1 experiment in Autumn, another in Spring. The study measured and analyzed ambient temperatures, relative humidity, and barometric pressure half-hourly onsite, using time series cross-correlations to determine whether steer behavior was associated with them. Both NDF and HDF groups showed similar lying and eating duration. HDF steers exhibited patterns of lying and feeding different from those of NDF steers. Spring observations found a number of correlations with temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure. Health and production data showed no differences between treatments. The results indicate that cattle made successful, short-term changes to changed feedlot environmental conditions. However, confirming these findings requires further replication. Spectral analysis was shown to be sensitive enough to detect behavioral differences between treatments and thus has potential animal welfare assessment tool.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that cattle aided by visual cues would be more efficient than uncued animals in locating and consuming foods placed in either fixed or variable locations within a 0.64-ha experimental pasture. Eight yearling steers were randomly selected and trained to associate traffic barricades and traffic cones with high- (oat-barley mixture) and low- (straw) quality foods, respectively. Initially steers were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 food location/visual cue treatments: fixed locations/with cues (F/C), variable locations/with cues (V/C), fixed locations/no cues (F/NC), or variable locations/no cues (V/NC). High- and low-quality foods and their respective cue (or no cue) were placed in the experimental pasture. Individual animals were allowed to explore the pasture for 10 min twice per day every other day for 1 week. Minutes until feeding, first feed type consumed (i.e., high-quality, low-quality, or no food consumed), animal location and activity (i.e., feeding, standing, or moving), and total intake of high- and low-quality feed were recorded during each 10-min trial. At the end of each week, location/visual cue treatments were randomly assigned to another 2 steers, which permitted an independent test of each animal in each treatment over a 4-week period. Animals in the F/C and V/C treatments took about 2 min to initially locate and consume a food, compared to F/NC and V/NC animals who took nearly 4 and 6 min, respectively. The high-quality food was the first food located and consumed by F/C, V/C, F/NC, and V/NC animals during 79, 77, 67, and 54% of sampling occasions, respectively. Cued animals typically spent more time feeding (P=0.0004) and less time standing (P=0.005) than uncued animals. Cued animals had a higher mean intake than uncued animals of high- (P=0.001) and low- (P=0.04) quality food. Mean high-quality intake for F/C, V/C, F/NC, and V/NC treatments was 266, 245, 214, and 126 (+/-22) g, respectively; mean low-quality intake for the same treatments was 36, 32, 12, and 10 (+/-10) g. Cued animals also consumed more food per distance traveled than uncued animals (P=0.005). Animals located food quicker (P=0.03) and consumed more high-quality food (P=0.02) when food locations were constant than when they were variable. Our data strongly indicate that cattle can learn to associate visual cues with disparate food qualities and use this information to forage more efficiently in both fixed and variable foraging environments.  相似文献

Although cattle can synthesize vitamin C (VC) endogenously, stress may increase VC requirements above the biosynthetic threshold and warrant supplementation. This study investigated the effects of a VC injection delivered before or after a long-distance transit event on blood parameters and feedlot performance of beef steers. Fifty-two days prior to trial initiation, 90 newly weaned, Angus-based steers from a single source were transported to Ames, IA, USA. On day 0, 72 steers (356 ± 17 kg) were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to intramuscular injection treatments (24 steers/treatment): saline injection pre- and post-transit (CON), VC (Vet One, Boise, ID, USA; 5 g sodium ascorbate/steer) injection pre-transit and saline injection post-transit (PRE) or saline injection pre-transit and VC injection post-transit (POST). Following pre-transit treatment injections, steers were transported on a commercial livestock trailer for approximately 18 h (1675 km). Post-transit (day 1), steers were sorted into pens with one GrowSafe bunk/pen (4 pens/treatment; 6 steers/pen). Steers were weighed on day 0, 1, 7, 30, 31, 56 and 57. Blood was collected from 3 steers/pen on day 0, 1, 2 and 7; liver biopsies were performed on the same 3 steers/pen on day 2. Data were analyzed as a randomized complete block design (experimental unit = steer; fixed effects = treatment and block) and blood parameters were analyzed as repeated measures. A pre-transit VC injection improved steer average daily gain from day 7 to 31 (P= 0.05) and overall (day 1 to 57; P= 0.02), resulting in greater BW for PRE-steers on day 30/31 (P= 0.03) and a tendency for greater final BW (day 56/57; P= 0.07). Steers that received VC pre- or post-transit had greater DM intake from day 31 to 57 (P= 0.01) and overall (P= 0.02) v. CON-steers. Plasma ascorbate concentrations were greatest for PRE-steers on day 1 and POST-steers on day 2 (treatment × day; P< 0.01). No interaction or treatment effects were observed for other blood parameters (P≥ 0.21). Plasma ferric-reducing antioxidant potential and malondialdehyde concentrations decreased post-transit (day; P< 0.01), while serum non-esterified fatty acids and haptoglobin concentrations increased post-transit (day; P< 0.01). In general, blood parameters returned to pre-transit values by day 7. Pre-transit administration of injectable VC to beef steers mitigated the decline in plasma ascorbate concentrations and resulted in superior feedlot performance compared to post-transit administration.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess potential post-bottleneck temporal genetic differentiation following the reintroduction of the species into the Białowieża Forest. Variability of 12 polymorphic microsatellite markers was analysed for 178 individuals born between 1955 and 2005, divided by birth year into five temporal groups. Low overall allelic richness (AR) per locus (AR = 2.0) and a low overall expected heterozygosity (HE = 0.28) were observed. The overall F IS was not significantly different from zero. The mean F IS values were, however, significantly different from zero for individuals born between 1955 and 1965 ( F IS = 0.19). A Bayesian computation was used to estimate effective population size (Ne) for each temporal group. We observed relatively small values of Ne ranging from 7.9 to 28.4. The low Ne values confirm that, despite a rapid growth of the bison population following the founder event, Ne increased only slowly.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 801–809.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine the incidence of transfer of a naturally occurring rifampicin-resistant strain of Escherichia coli (RREC) among cattle in a research feedlot. METHODS AND RESULTS: During three separate experiments, steers in three different pens were orally inoculated with RREC originally isolated from bovine faeces. Faecal swabs were performed on all steers in the feedlot at approximately 5 week intervals thereafter. Faecal grab samples were collected from steers in the inoculated and the immediately adjacent pens for up to 4 months. In all three experiments, the inoculated steers and penmates shed RREC within 48 h, and then shed intermittently throughout the sampling periods. Transfer of RREC to steers in an adjacent pen was confirmed only during the first experiment, but never to those in non-adjacent pens. All recovered RREC isolates were compared with the inoculated strain using multiple methods indicating that all RREC isolates were descendants of the original inoculated strain. CONCLUSIONS: Detection of the RREC strain on the pen floor and within the animal handling system, but not in the feed troughs or water bowls, suggests faecal-oral to be the primary mode of transmission among animals. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The results suggest that in the absence of selective pressure, antibiotic-resistant bacteria may persist in cattle for a short duration but widespread transfer among cattle in a feedlot environment may be an exception rather than the norm. Modifications to feedlot management are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract  Different host-seeking responses to cattle by Culicoides brevitarsis and Culex annulirostris were found using two-dimensional cattle-shapes and simulated stimuli. Culicoides brevitarsis was attracted to the respiratory chemicals CO2 and CO2 + octenol but not to octenol alone. It was attracted to cattle-shape when CO2 + octenol was also present and when the shape was enhanced with visible and infrared light. Culex annulirostris was attracted to each chemical treatment but not to any visual stimuli. Orientation of the host, possibly in relation to wind direction, may also be important but requires further consideration. The detection of behavioural differences between the species was dependent on the positioning of attractants and traps in relation to the host image. Responses by C. brevitarsis to CO2 + octenol and the basic shape were only recorded in sticky traps. Contact with the shape was recorded initially on the shape head but preference was shown later to be for the ridge-line of the back. The response by Cx. annulirostris to CO2 + octenol was only recorded in light traps placed centrally and above the shape. It is proposed that the initial location of hosts by C. brevitarsis is by visual stimuli. Attraction to CO2 + octenol is secondary and probably only occurs close to the host. The chemicals help the midge to recognise and come to the potential host where landing is induced visually near the interface between the backline of the host and the background. The primary response by Cx. annulirostris is to CO2 and octenol although these did not appear to bring this insect on to the host. Covers could be used to protect cattle from C. brevitarsis (but not Cx. annulirostris ) by blocking the visual stimuli.  相似文献

In beef cattle, feeding behaviour and activity are associated with feed efficiency and methane (CH4) emissions. This study aimed to understand the underlying traits responsible for the contribution of cattle behaviour to individual differences in feed efficiency, performance and CH4 emissions. A total of 84 steers (530±114 kg BW) of two different breeds (crossbreed Charolais and Luing) were used. The experiment was a 2×2×3 factorial design with breed, basal diets (concentrate v. mixed) and dietary treatments (no additive, calcium nitrate or rapeseed cake) as the main factors. The individual dry matter intake (DMI; kg) was recorded daily and the BW was measured weekly over a 56-day period. Ultrasound fat depth was measured on day 56. Based on the previous data, the indexes average daily gain, food conversion and residual feed intake (RFI) were calculated. The frequency of meals, the duration per visit and the time spent feeding per day were taken as feeding behaviour measures. Daily activity was measured using the number of steps, the number of standing bouts and the time standing per day. Agonistic interactions (including the number of contacts, aggressive interactions, and displacements per day) between steers at the feeders were assessed as indicators of dominance. Temperament was assessed using the crush score test (which measures restlessness when restrained) and the flight speed on release from restraint. Statistical analysis was performed using multivariate regression models. Steers that spent more time eating showed better feed efficiency (P=0.039), which can be due to greater secretion of saliva. Feeding time was longer with the mixed diet (P<0.001), Luings (P=0.009) and dominant steers (P=0.032). Higher activity (more steps) in the pen was associated with poorer RFI, possibly because of higher energy expenditure for muscle activity. Frequent meals contributed to a reduction in CH4 emissions per kg DMI. The meal frequency was higher with a mixed diet (P<0.001) and increased in more temperamental (P=0.003) and dominant (P=0.017) steers. In addition, feed intake was lower (P=0.032) in more temperamental steers. This study reveals that efficiency increases with a longer feeding time and CH4 emissions decrease with more frequent meals. As dominant steers eat more frequently and for longer, a reduction in competition at the feeder would improve both feed efficiency and CH4 emissions. Feed efficiency can also be improved through a reduction in activity. Selection for calmer cattle would reduce activity and increase feed intake, which may improve feed efficiency and promote growth, respectively.  相似文献

Mycotoxins are present in almost all feedstuffs used in animal nutrition but are often ignored in beef cattle systems, even though they can affect animal performance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of mycotoxins and a mycotoxin adsorbent (ADS) on performance of Nellore cattle finished in a feedlot. One hundred Nellore cattle (430 ± 13 kg) were used in a randomized complete block design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The factors consisted of two diets with either natural contamination (NC) or exogenous contamination (EC) and the presence (1 g/kg of DM; ADS) or absence of a mycotoxin adsorbent. The NC and EC diets had the following contaminations, respectively: 0.00 and 10.0 µg/kg aflatoxins, 5114 and 5754 µg/kg fumonisins, 0.00 and 42.1 µg/kg trichothecenes B, 0.00 and 22.1 µg/kg trichothecenes A and 42.9 and 42.9 µg/kg fusaric acid. At the beginning of the experiment, all animals were weighed, and four randomly selected animals were slaughtered to evaluate the initial carcass weight. After 97 days of treatment, all animals were weighed and slaughtered. There was no interaction among factors for the DM intake (DMI; P = 0.92); however, there was a tendency for the EC diets to decrease the DMI by 650 g/day compared to animals fed NC diets (P = 0.09). There was a trend for interaction among factors (P = 0.08) for the average daily gain (ADG), where the greatest ADG was observed for cattle fed the NC diet (1.77 kg), and the lowest was observed for those fed the EC diet (1.51 kg). The NC + ADS and EC + ADS treatments presented intermediate values for ADG. The animals fed the NC diet had a greater final BW (596 kg) than animals fed the EC treatment (582 kg; P = 0.04). There was a tendency for interaction among factors for carcass gain (P = 0.08). Similarly to ADG, the highest carcass gain was observed for animals fed the NC diet (1.20 kg), and the lowest was observed for those fed the EC diet (1.05 kg). The NC + ADS and EC + ADS treatments presented intermediate values. The natural contamination groups had greater carcass gain than that of the EC groups, and the use of the ADS recovered part of the weight gain in animals fed the EC diet. In conclusion, mycotoxins at the levels evaluated affected the performance of beef cattle, and adsorbents may mitigate their impact.  相似文献

The genetic structure of the Dexter, a minority cattle breed with complex demographic history, was investigated using microsatellite markers and a range of statistical approaches designed to detect both admixture and genetic drift. Modern representatives of two putative ancestral populations, the Devon and Kerry, together with the different populations of the Dexter, which have experienced different demographic histories, were analysed. Breed units showed comparatively high levels of genetic variability ( H E = 0.63–0.68); however, distinct genetic subgroups were detected within the Dexter, which could be attributed to known demographic events. Much lower diversity was identified in three small, isolated Dexter populations ( H E = 0.52–0.55) and higher differentiation ( F ST > 0.13) was found. For one of these populations, where strong selection has taken place, we also found evidence of a demographic bottleneck. Three methods for quantifying breed admixture were applied and substantial method-based variation in estimates for the genetic contribution of the two proposed ancestral populations for each subdivision of the Dexter was found. Results were consistent only in the case of a group consisting of selected Traditional Dexter animals, where the ancestor of the modern Kerry breed was also determined as the greater parental contributor to the Dexter. The inconsistency of estimation of admixture proportions between the methods highlights the potentially confounding role of genetic drift in shaping small population structure, and the consequences of accurately describing population histories from contemporary genetic data.  相似文献

The relationship in geographical distribution and morphological variation of leaflet width and length (diagnostic trait), between and within populations of Dioon edule Lindl., has been investigated throughout its known range in eastern Mexico (from the states of Nuevo León to Veracruz, north to south, respectively). A total of 1832 leaflets were measured for width and length from 154 plants distributed amongst five populations using four leaflet replicas from each of three leaves per plant. For leaflet width and length the variation among populations indicated significant stat-istical differences ( F 4,147 = 125.83; P  < 0.0001; R 2 = 92.17% and F 4,147 = 9.04; P  < 0.001; R 2 = 26.8%), respectively. With respect to leaflet width, the multiple range test showed three groups with a north to south distributional relationship along the range of the species. The correlation coefficient among paired populations, respect to geographical distance and the absolute value of the mean difference of leaflet width in each population, was positive, and different from zero ( r  = 0.82; P  = 0.013). A great variation of important ecological and evolutionary parameters was shown.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 141 , 465–470.  相似文献

The effects of the β-agonist ractopamine, recently approved for use in feedlot cattle to improve carcass quality and performance, on fecal shedding Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella in feedlot cattle was examined. In the first study, 20 feedlot steers and heifers were randomly assigned to receive ractopamine or no ractopamine (control) by way of oral bolus for 28 days. Fecal samples were collected daily, and shedding of E. coli O157:H7 determined. When examined during the entire 28-day experimental period, ractopamine decreased (P = 0.0006) the percentage of cattle shedding E. coli O157:H7 (58% vs. 42% for control and ractopamine treatments, respectively). A second study was conducted in a commercial feedlot facility in the southwestern United States. Eighteen pens of cross-bred beef heifers (approximately 100 head/pen and 9 pens/treatment) were randomly assigned to receive either 0 (control) or 200 mg ractopamine/head·d–1. Fresh fecal samples (30/pen) were collected off the pen floor before ractopamine supplementation and again after approximately 28 days of ractopamine supplementation (within a few days of slaughter); the samples were cultured for E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella. The percentage of animals shedding E. coli O157:H7 was decreased when data were pooled across replicates (P = 0.05) in ractopamine-treated cattle compared with controls. The percentage of animals shedding Salmonella tended to be higher (P = 0.08) with the ractopamine treatment when data were pooled across replicates. In the wild, cover is used by animals to seek shelter from the elements, protection from predators and aggressive conspecifics and as a way to reduce inter-animal communication. Rearing environments for captive raised fowl often contain open areas that are lacking in complexity and that are greatly underused. As a result, use of space within pen-type enclosures is often not uniform. This paper investigates the effect of increased environmental complexity on the use of space by broilers. The experiment consisted of three cover treatments (mesh panels, frame panels and no cover) and three group sizes (80, 110 and 140). The vertical panels, constructed of PVC piping, were positioned in pen centers, while the pen centers in the no cover treatment were left empty. It was hypothesized that the provision of vertical panels to pen centers would attract birds into the central space and would lead to a more uniform distribution of birds. Using a grid-coordinate system set up in each pen, scan samples were taken on the use of space in each pen four times per day, 3 days per week from 5 to 44 days of age. Use of space in the central region for the two cover treatments was significantly higher than for the no cover treatment (P<0.0001). The effect of cover treatment on the mean percentage of birds using the central space was influenced by age (P<0.0001) and by group size (P<0.05). Differences in the use of space between the frame and mesh treatment were only found during week 1. In the side, end and middle regions surrounding the panels, use of space was influenced by cover treatment and age (P<0.0001). Over 80% of the use of pen center occurred at the ends and sides of the panels. These results support the hypothesis that the presence of vertical panels results in a more uniform distribution of birds within the pen by increasing the number of birds using the center.  相似文献

Effects of proportions of neutral detergent fibre (aNDFom) and starch, as well as their degradation rates, on rumen fermentation were tested using an in vitro rumen simulation system (SIMCO). The in vitro system was designed to simulate selective particle retention and had an average fluid volume of 1150 ml with a liquid dilution rate of approximately 0.07 h−1. Two types of hay (aNDFom sources) and two types of starch were each included at two different levels in the diet and were examined in an experiment following a 2×2×2 factorial arrangement of treatments (eight diet combinations). The hay was either late-cut timothy (Phleum pretense L.) or early cut meadow grass (Poa pratensis L.), with ruminal in situ aNDFom digestion rates of 0.03–0.04 and 0.07–0.08 h−1, respectively. The two starch types were raw (R) and cooked (C) potato starch with previously determined in vitro ruminal digestion rates of 0.04 and 0.20 h−1, respectively. The starch levels were 300 and 600 g/kg diet dry matter (DM) with the remaining being hay (282–682 g/kg DM) and peptone (14–111 g/kg DM). The aNDFom level varied among the diets with different starch levels and hay types. The peptone acted as a source of peptides and, together with ammonia salts from buffer, was used to balance the N contents of the diets. The feeding level for each of the eight vessels was 28 g DM/d. Two 10-day simulations were made with the system. The average pH was higher (P<0.05) for all treatments with raw potato starch (6.19) versus cooked starch (6.07). Protozoa scores, on a qualitative scale, declined faster at the higher starch level. The aNDFom digestibility was, as expected, higher (P<0.001) for meadow hay (0.57) than timothy (0.32), and was also higher (P<0.001) at the lower starch level (0.54) versus the higher (0.35). Microbial protein production efficiency (mg microbial N/g organic matter truly digested) was higher for the faster degrading aNDFom (P<0.01) and starch (P<0.05) sources, but was not affected by starch level. Cooked starch resulted in a lower acetate proportion (449 mmol/mol versus 591 mmol/mol VFA; P<0.001) but higher proportions of propionate (297 mmol/mol versus 236 mmol/mol VFA; P<0.001), and butyrate (169 mmol/mol versus 127 mmol/mol VFA; P<0.01). Butyrate increased with starch level (127 mmol/mol versus 169 mmol/mol VFA; P<0.01), and was also higher for meadow hay versus timothy (168 mmol/mol versus 128 mmol/mol VFA; P<0.01). Interactions between the treatments demonstrate that the response in VFA pattern to starch level is dependent on starch and aNDFom sources. Substrates such as starch and aNDFom are fermented differently depending on their rates of ruminal degradation.  相似文献
