Surface topography plays a key role in the colonization of substrata by the colonizing stages of marine fouling organisms. For the innovation of marine antifouling coatings, it is essential to understand how topographic cues affect the settlement of these organisms. In this study, tapered, spiked microstructures and discrete honeycombs of varying feature dimensions were designed and fabricated in order to examine the influence of topography on the attachment of zoospores of the green macroalga Ulva linza and cells of the diatom (microalga) Navicula incerta. Contrasting results were obtained with these two species of algae. Indeed, the preferred location of cells of N. incerta was dominated by attachment point theory, which suggested a positive correlation between the density of cells adhering and the amount of available attachment points, while the settlement of spores of U. linza was mainly regulated by both Wenzel roughness and local binding geometry.  相似文献

The settlement and recruitment patterns of Chromis viridis were followed during three consecutive seasons along the reefs of Eilat, Red Sea. The findings, based on intensive field surveys and a translocation experiment, indicated a strong and repeatable preference for some, but not other, colonies of the branching coral Acropora eurystoma; with significantly more larvae settling onto preferred colonies that house conspecific adults and juveniles. Furthermore, these findings showed that, given high recruitment rates, settlement‐site selection could drive migration by adults and older juveniles. As only some C. viridis schools received direct settlement, it was suggested that settlement‐driven migration is responsible for the replenishment of those schools that do not receive settlement and to the colonization of previously unoccupied coral colonies.  相似文献

A model of extinction probability, based on the general theory of island biogeography [MacArthur and Wilson, 1967], is proposed for humans on oceanic islands; extinction probability is determined by island carrying capacity, frequency and amplitude of fluctuations in resources determining carrying capacity, and the net costs of contact and exchange between population units. The model predicts that extinction probability will determine island settlement patterns within an island group resulting in nonsettlement of islands with low carrying capacities and settlement of all islands with high carrying capacities. Data examined from the Marshall Islands tend to support the model. The model is extended to initial atoll colonization patterns. The success of an exotic species relies on many factors including dispersal capabilities and adaptation to novel environments. In particular, rapid spread from an initial point of introduction favours long-term establishment of exotic species, especially when large genetic diversity is maintained during the colonization phase. We here focused on the slipper limpet, Crepidula fornicata, a species native to the western Atlantic that has successfully invaded European bays and estuaries since the end of the nineteenth century following repeated introductions. Its settlement at high densities has major consequences on the macro-benthic fauna and flora. The aim of the present study was to analyse the ability of C. fornicata for rapid diffusion and long-distance dispersal, at the level of a large French gulf, namely the gulf of St-Malo (covering 120 km in latitude and 40 km in longitude) in the English Channel. The genetic architecture of 16 populations distributed all over this gulf was investigated using five microsatellite loci. Genetic diversity was found to be high and did not vary significantly with population density, population age or geographic location. Moreover, despite potential isolation among populations due to a strong tidal regime and the action of wind-induced currents, only weak barriers to gene flow were found across the gulf. These results were in agreement with results obtained from a simple 2D larval dispersal model. Both genetic data and the simulation model highlighted the potential for rapid and efficient spread of C. fornicata at a regional level.  相似文献

Summary Experiments were performed to determine if earlier colonists inhibited, enhanced, or were necessary for establishment of later colonists during development of an estuarine fouling community at Lewes, Delaware. We determined the significance of earlier stages on the successional process by functionally removing early colonizing species. Since settlement of sessile invertebrates onto our experimental test plates was seasonal, we were able to accomplish functional removal of early colonists by putting out clean test panels after these species had ceased settling. Comparisons between panels initially submerged at three different times in 1974 and 1975, and between panels put out at one-month intervals throughout the study (to describe seasonal settlement patterns) allowed us to determine interactions between adult populations of earlier colonists and colonizing individuals of later arriving species.The dominant sessile species in our system and their times of settlement were: a barnacle (Balanus improvisus) — April through June, a polychaete (Hydroides dianthus) — July and August, a tunicate (Molgula manhatensis) — June through October, a hydroid (Tubularia crocea) — July through October, and a mussel (Mytilus edulis) — November through April. All successional series eventually came to be dominated by M. edulis, and it persisted as the dominant for over a year.A variety of species interactions were observed. M. edulis inhibited colonization by all other dominants and B. improvisus partially inhibited settlement of M. manhattensis. The presence of adult M. manhattensis had no influence on summer settlement of T. crocea, but the hydroids enhanced settlement of tunicates in the fall. During both years of our study, larger settlements of mussels were noted on panels harboring tunicates and hydroids than on bare surfaces. H. dianthus, on the other hand, became established only on bare substrates, and colonization was almost totally inhibited by other dominants.Development in our fouling community did not conform to any single model of community development presented to date. Instead, components of several models were observed within our relatively simple (in terms of number of species) system. For example, facilitation (enhancement of later colonists by earlier ones) and inhibition (resistance of earlier colonists to invasion by later colonists) were both observed. However, we found no evidence earlier colonists were essential for establishment of the next developmental stage. In fact, inhibitory interactions appeared to be much more prevalent than facilitative interactions. The former may also have more profound effects on community development since they more often determine eventual species compositions.  相似文献

Seventeen species of nematophagous fungi were recorded, three species were endoparasitic and fourteen species were predacious fungi. Among the predacious fungi Arthrobotrys oligospora, Dactylaria brochopaga and Monacrosporium eudermatum were very frequent, whereas others were recorded at lower frequency. Twelve species of nematophagous fungi from compost as well as cow dung manure, 15 species from leaf litter and only eight species from agricultural soils were recorded. In general, substrate colonization by nematophagous fungi was higher in leaf litter, compost and cow dung manure. The agricultural soil amended with FYM (farm yard manure) recorded nine species of nematophagous fungi while unamended soil recorded only seven species. Thirteen species of nematophagous fungi were recorded from soils under banyan tree. Of all these fungi unidentified net-forming fungus, M. eudermatum, A. cladodes, D. brochopaga, S. hadra, A. oligospora and A. dactyloides had higher percentage of soil colonization. In soil collected under pipal tree only eight species were recorded, of which A. oligospora, A. cladode and an unidentified fungus were more predominant as their percentage colonized in soil samples was higher. Few studies have examined root galls as a substratum for colonization of nematophagous fungi. Of all the root gall samples, okra root galls recorded maximum colonization by predacious fungi. Maximum percentage of root gall colonization was recorded for M. eudermatum followed by A. oligospora and M. ellipsosporum. M. eudermatum was also most predominant colonizer of balsam, brinjal and rice root galls.  相似文献

Spatial patterns of settlement and abundance of older life stages were examined for three species of damselfish in the genus Dascyllus by monitoring natural colonization of standard amounts of initially empty juvenile microhabitat (anemones for D. trimaculatus; branching coral for D. flavicaudus and D. aruanus) transplanted to a series of sites within lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia. Large spatial differences in larval colonization were observed, which were temporally consistent but different among the species. At the whole-island scale, D. trimaculatus settled primarily on the northern shore, while settlement of the other two species was greatest at the southern end. The three species also showed different patterns of settlement within lagoons: D. aruanus settled mainly nearer to shore, D. flavicaudus primarily on offshore lagoon portions and D. trimaculatus colonized equally across the lagoons. Among sites around the island, the relative abundance of older juveniles after 10 months was a curvilinear function of the relative abundance of settlers for two species (D. trimaculatus and D. flavicaudus). There was no relationship between patterns of settlement and abundance of older juveniles for D. aruanus, although juvenile abundance was inversely related to that of juvenile D. flavicaudus. At the within-lagoon scale, settlement mirrored almost exactly the relative abundance of older lifestages of D. trimaculatus and D. flavicaudus, whereas there was just a qualitative match for D. aruanus. A competition experiment revealed that juvenile D. flavicaudus had a greater effect on population growth of D. aruanus than vice versa, and this mechanism helped explain why the modification of settlement patterns was greatest in D. aruanus. Interspecific variation in abundance of older stages was shaped to differing extents by both patterns of larval delivery and subsequent density-dependent processes involving competition for shelter space. The presence of c. 1450 individuals of the balanid barnacle Balanus crenatus Bruguière encrusting the test of a clypeasteroid sea urchin from the Late Miocene of the Guadalquivir Basin (southwestern Spain) allows proposing a settlement pattern linked to the growth of the encrusting organism. The possible influence of dip angle was controlled by dividing the test into four concentric zones ranging from lowest margin to apex (0–15°, 15–30°, 30–50° and 0°). Contour diagrams were prepared to identify areas of highest barnacle density as well as size categories distribution in relationship to the pitch of the sea urchin test. The orientation of balanid tests was recorded and plotted on rose diagrams from 0° to 180°. Four size categories of barnacles were distinguished: (1) < 1 mm, (2) 1–2 mm, (3) 2–3 mm and (4) 3–4 mm; these correspond to a growth sequence ranging from post‐larval forms to juveniles. Two areas of maximum settlement density are situated on the posterior margin of the test, on aboral as well as oral surfaces. The aboral surface shows the maximum number of barnacles. Two groups of individuals are defined on the basis of their location, that is, those encrusting the posterior medium part of the urchin, and those located on the anterior half. The results suggest that larval settlement was initially controlled by the availability of free space and afterwards by an intensification effect. Orientation and dip of the test may have played a secondary role in the settlement of the larvae. Substrate colonization seems to have been closely related to the biostratinomic history of the sea urchin test and although several scenarios are possible, our data are congruent with a synchronous settlement of both surfaces (aboral and oral) by one spat or several.  相似文献

The settlement of Madagascar is one of the most unusual, and least understood, episodes in human prehistory. Madagascar was one of the last landmasses to be reached by people, and despite the island's location just off the east coast of Africa, evidence from genetics, language and culture all attests that it was settled jointly by Africans, and more surprisingly, Indonesians. Nevertheless, extremely little is known about the settlement process itself. Here, we report broad geographical screening of Malagasy and Indonesian genetic variation, from which we infer a statistically robust coalescent model of the island's initial settlement. Maximum-likelihood estimates favour a scenario in which Madagascar was settled approximately 1200 years ago by a very small group of women (approx. 30), most of Indonesian descent (approx. 93%). This highly restricted founding population raises the possibility that Madagascar was settled not as a large-scale planned colonization event from Indonesia, but rather through a small, perhaps even unintended, transoceanic crossing.  相似文献

Methods used in the restoration of lowland heath vary depending on edaphic factors at a site and need for introduction of ericaceous propagules. This study investigates the effect of some methods on growth of an important ericaceous species, Heather (Calluna vulgaris). It also explores whether success of growth of C. vulgaris in restoration schemes is affected by its degree of colonization by ericoid mycorrhizal fungi (ERM). The success of Heather growth was compared at three sites, a control area of natural heathland and two restoration sites. These were a quarry where soil had been translocated but not chemically manipulated and a site on agricultural land where the top soil had been improved but then either stripped away or acidified prior to attempting heathland restoration. Propagules of C. vulgaris were applied either as turves or as clippings. Results show that clippings produced as dense a cover of C. vulgaris as turves over a period of 13 years and that plants in such swards can exhibit a degree of ERM colonization comparable to that found in mature plants growing in natural heathland. Young (<2 years of age) plants of C. vulgaris had less extensive mycorrhizal colonization of their roots, particularly when growing on restored agricultural soils. A relationship was found between lower levels of mycorrhizal colonization and smaller aboveground plant growth. Success of heathland restoration may be improved by finding means to enhance the rate and extent of mycorrhizal colonization of young C. vulgaris growing in a restoration environment.  相似文献

Plants recruit microbial communities from the soil in which they germinate. Our understanding of the recruitment process and the factors affecting it is still limited for most microbial taxa. We analysed several factors potentially affecting root microbiome structure – the importance of geographic location of natural populations, the microbiome of native seeds as putative source of colonization and the effect of a plant's response to UVB exposure on root colonization of highly abundant species. The microbiome of Nicotiana attenuata seeds was determined by a culture‐dependent and culture‐independent approach, and the root microbiome of natural N. attenuata populations from five different locations was analysed using 454‐pyrosequencing. To specifically address the influence of UVB light on root colonization by Deinococcus, a genus abundant and consistently present in N. attenuata roots, transgenic lines impaired in UVB perception (irUVR8) and response (irCHAL) were investigated in a microcosm experiment with/without UVB supplementation using a synthetic bacterial community. The seed microbiome analysis indicated that N. attenuata seeds are sterile. Alpha and beta diversities of native root bacterial communities differed significantly between soil and root, while location had only a significant effect on the fungal but not the bacterial root communities. With UVB supplementation, root colonization of Deinococcus increased in wild type, but decreased in irUVR8 and irCHAL plants compared to nontreated plants. Our results suggest that N. attenuata recruits a core root microbiome exclusively from soil, with fungal root colonization being less selective than bacterial colonization. Root colonization by Deinococcus depends on the plant's response to UVB.  相似文献

Fouling species produce adhesive polymers during the settlement, adhesion and colonization of new surfaces in the marine environment. The present paper tests the hypothesis that enzymes of the appropriate specificity may prevent biofouling by hydrolysing these adhesive polymers. Seventeen commercially available enzyme preparations designed originally for bulk use in a range of end-use applications were tested for their effects on the settlement and/or adhesion of three major fouling species, viz. the green alga Ulva linza, the diatom Navicula perminuta and the barnacle Balanus amphitrite. The serine-proteases were found to have the broadest antifouling potential reducing the adhesion strength of spores and sporelings of U. linza, cells of N. perminuta and inhibiting settlement of cypris larvae of B. amphitrite. Mode-of-action studies on the serine-protease, Alcalase, indicated that this enzyme reduced adhesion of U. linza in a concentration-dependent manner, that spores of the species could recover their adhesive strength if the enzyme was removed and that the adhesive of U. linza and juvenile cement of B. amphitrite became progressively less sensitive to hydrolysis as they cured.  相似文献

基于辽宁省营口市1988、1992、1997、2000和2004年5期Landsat TM卫星遥感影像数据,利用城市增长和土地利用变化模拟模型SLEUTH模拟预测了6种预案(当前趋势预案、无保护预案、适当保护预案、管理增长预案、生态可持续预案和区域及城市规划预案)下2005—2030年营口市城市及农村聚落的增长和土地利用变化情况.结果表明:1988—2004年,营口市城市及村镇聚落的增长面积为14.93 km2;1997—2004年,研究区水域、园地、矿山、耕地等土地类型面积的变化较大.2005—2030年,生态可持续预案下,营口市城市及村镇聚落的面积将缓慢增长,较好地保护耕地、林地等资源,但在一定程度上将限制城市及村镇聚落的增长;无保护预案下研究区城市及农村聚落的增长速度最快,耕地流失面积较大;当前趋势预案下,耕地流失面积与无保护预案相近,但耕地流失的格局不同;适当保护预案和管理增长预案下,耕地的流失面积较小;区域与城市规划预案下,城市及村镇聚落增长主要分布在城市开发区和城市周边地区.利用不同预案下的SLEUTH模型可以模拟不同土地管理政策对城市及村镇聚落增长和土地利用变化的影响,对我国实施统筹城乡发展、建设社会主义新农村具有指导意义.  相似文献

The influence of fucalean canopy species and dominant understory macroalgae on algal colonization was investigated to evaluate whether layering contributes to patterns in algal diversity. Patterns in recruitment were compared among total-clearing, understory-removal, canopy-removal, and undisturbed plots (plot area = 0.25 m2), using a randomized block design in depths <10 m and 10–20 m at Woody Island, Western Australia. To evaluate if propagules were available in the water column above the canopy layer, settlement plates (plate area = 0.04 m2) were deployed in depths <10 m, 10–20 m, and >20 m. A total of 198 macroalgal species was recorded. Biomass of the understory species Osmundaria prolifera Lamouroux and Botryocladia sonderi Silva was similar between canopy-removal and undisturbed plots. Diversity of macroalgae was similar in the presence and absence of a canopy layer. Taxa found in the canopy showed different patterns in recruitment. Cystoseiraceae recruited predominantly in total-clearings in both depth strata. Sargassaceae recruited most abundantly in depths <10 m. Density of canopy taxa on settlement plates was similar with depth (20–30 juveniles per plate), and juveniles were mainly Cystoseiraceae. In contrast to kelp beds or forests, patterns in algal colonization appeared to be maintained by environmental factors or processes other than the direct effects of layering in the subtidal fucoid-dominated assemblages at Woody Island. The impact of initial surface chemistry on settlement of barnacle, bryozoan, and hydroid larvae was assessed. Temporal (on a scale of weeks to months) and fine scale spatial (centimeter to meter) variation in settlement were quantified. Four arrays of silanized glass surfaces, deployed at ≈2-wk intervals, were monitored after 1 and 3 days of immersion. Settlement of all larval types exhibited strong temporal variation. There was a 25, 22- and 18-fold difference between the highest and lowest Day 1 settlement for barnacles, bryozoans and hydroids, respectively. Bryozoan and hydroid settlement was spatially variable, barnacle settlement was not. Barnacle and bryozoan settlement was influenced by inttial surface chemistry, hydroid settlement was not. For barnacles, there was a 2-fold difference between total settlement over the four arrays on untreated glass and diphenyl-silanized surfaces; for bryozoans, there was a 51-fold difference, and in the opposite direction. There was a negative correlation between barnacle and bryozoan settlement with respect to surface. This result was independent of the presence of the other species. Bryozoan settlement was also spatially and temporally quantified in a separate, single surface 56-h array, and total bryozoan settlement ·h−1 was found to be correlated with light intensity. Patterns of initial colonization were strongly influenced by surface chemistry and spatial temporal variation in larval supply. Defining historic grazing pressures and rangeland management is vital if early landscape threshold crossing and long–term trajectories of landscape change are to be properly understood. In this paper we use a new environmental simulation model, Búmodel, to assess two contrasting historical grazing landscapes in Myvatnssveit Iceland for two key periods—the colonization period (ca. Landnám, a.d. 872–1000) and the early eighteenth century a.d. Results suggest that there were spatial and temporal variations in productivity and grazing pressure within and between historic grazing areas and indicate that land degradation was not an inevitable consequence of the livestock grazing introduced with settlement. The results also demonstrate the significance of grazing and livestock management strategies in preventing overgrazing, particularly under cooler climatic conditions. The model enables detailed consideration of historic grazing management scenarios and their associated landscape pressures.  相似文献

Aim Land use intensity has been recognized as one of the major determinants of native species declines. The re‐expansion of species previously constrained by habitat degradation has been rarely investigated. Here, we use site occupancy models incorporating imperfect detection to identify the land use drivers of the re‐expansion of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra). Location Czech Republic. Methods We applied multi‐season occupancy models to otter presence–non‐detection data collected in three national surveys (1992, 2000, 2006) at 552 sites (11.2 × 12 km grid cells). Model parameters included site occupancy, colonization and extinction probabilities, and detection probability at a sub‐site level. We modelled changes in occupancy over time as a function of agricultural, urban and industrial land use and change in the extent of agricultural land use. Results Under the best fitting model, occupancy was estimated to be 34.6% in 1992, 51.3% in 2000 and 83.7% in 2006. Detection probability was neither perfect nor constant. Occupancy probability in 1992 was negatively related to land use gradients. Colonization was more likely to occur where a reduction in agricultural land was larger. Variation in extinction and colonization rates along land use gradients resulted in increased occupancy in industrial and especially urban landscapes. Conversely, occupancy remained almost unchanged along agricultural gradients. Main conclusions Dynamics of otter expansion were strongly associated with the two main patterns of the rapid environmental transition that has taken place in the Czech Republic since the early 1990s. Results show that a reduction in intensive agricultural land use led to an increase in otter distribution, providing evidence of the impact of agricultural land use on stream ecosystems. Moreover, otters recolonized urban and industrial landscapes, probably as a result of extensive reduction in water pollution from point sources. Our results suggest that active conservation of otter populations should focus on restoration of freshwater habitat at large scales, especially in agricultural landscapes.  相似文献

In the Chaîne des Puys, a mid-elevation volcanic mountain of the French Massif Central, Scots pine proves to be an invasive species colonizing abandoned lawns or heathlands, and forms in a few years monospecific natural forests. Most of the abandonment occurred 30 to 40 years ago and this process has now stopped. Thus, we lack data on the very first phase of tree colonization. We anticipate that a simulation tool could bring an appreciable help in (i) rebuilding the entire colonization process – including the initial phase – of pine settlement and (ii) answering questions about the origin of the narrow and unimodal distributions of age of pine stands we observed. In addition, such a simulator could help managers to forecast extension of Scots pine and to predict growth and evolution of present secondary forests. A spatially explicit individual-based model is presented. The model takes into account both space and time and includes growth of trees, seed production and seed dispersal, death and competition between individuals. The influence of the initial parameters are analyzed and elements of validation given. The model was then used to predict tree settlement and stand establishment using the initial conditions from a natural stand studied in the field whose characteristics before abandonment were known (number and age-distribution of trees, location of mother trees, time of abandonment). Three simulations were achieved by using the same initial conditions but following different scenarios for the recruitment process. The scenario of a fluctuating resistance of the resident vegetation (that controls the susceptibility of the environment to tree establishment) seemed as one of the most probable to explain the actual stand characteristics. We thus concluded that dynamic models could be improved by taking into account the resistance of the vegetation to colonization as a fluctuating parameter instead of a static and permanent attribute.  相似文献

Aim This paper describes the dispersal process of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus Linnaeus, 1758) with respect to climatic factors, landscape characteristics and human activity. We hypothesized that environmental characteristics constrain the relative abundance and dispersal process of roe deer. Location The study was conducted in the Iberian Mountains, north‐eastern Spain, during 1986–2000. Methods Roe deer colonization dates in the study area were obtained from a survey for large mammals and from direct interviews with the employees of the Fish and Game Agency. We used a 10 × 10 km UTM grid as the sampling unit (n = 91). The relative abundance of roe deer was estimated by counting the number of pellet groups in line transects, which were representative of the habitat availability in the 10 × 10 km UTM grid. Climatic factors were obtained from meteorological stations placed near to the plot. Landscape structure indices, topography and human activity factors were obtained from digital maps using fragstats 3.3 and idrisi 32. We discarded a number of variables with no statistical significance and avoided multicollinearity by using Spearman rank correlation. Then, we used GLMz (with a multinomial error distribution and a logit link function) to analyse the influence of each variable considered in the dispersal process. Finally, GLMz (with a binomial error distribution and a logit link function) were used a posteriori to differentiate between the effects of the explanatory factors on a particular phase of the dispersal process. Results Our results indicate that proximity to a previously colonized grid significantly affected the global process of roe deer colonization. Independently of the proximity of the nearest population in the previous phase of colonization, our results also indicated that the dispersal process was influenced by precipitation and landscape structure, leading the species to colonize even apparently hostile places. Original nuclei of these populations occurred in territories with high and constant precipitation, and a landscape formed by mosaics of agricultural land with a high proportion of forests. During the expansion process, roe deer colonized territories with summer droughts, dominated by large agricultural patches and with few forest patches. Main conclusions These data support the working hypothesis that environmental characteristics constrain roe deer relative abundance and dispersal process through the Iberian Mountains. The location of the original nuclei of these populations probably had environmental conditions that were more favourable for the roe deer. Areas settled in the final phases of the dispersal process had low relative abundances of roe deer, and are likely to act mainly as dispersal corridors rather than being able to sustain viable populations themselves.  相似文献

The impact of Dreissena polymorpha settlement on recruitment of juvenile mussels and density of other macroinvertebrates was studied in field experiments using blank concrete blocks and tiles (control), blocks and tiles with attached empty zebra mussel shells, and blocks and tiles with attached living mussels. On blocks, dominant invertebrate taxa showed colonization patterns coinciding with increased habitat complexity owing to zebra mussel settlement or the biodeposition of faeces and pseudofaeces. Adult and especially juvenile zebra mussels preferred blocks with empty shells to blank blocks and blocks with living mussels; this might possibly be caused by a chemical cue that induces gregarious settlement. Lower recruitment on blocks with attached living mussels compared to blocks with only shells could be the consequence of ingestion of larvae by adult mussels and of competition for food. On tiles, the sediments deposited and the organic content of the sediment were investigated. Sedimentation was significantly higher on shell‐only and live‐mussel tiles compared to blank tiles. Organic matter differed significantly between blank and live‐mussel tiles.  相似文献
