We investigated seasonal changes in the chemical properties of precipitation (bulk deposition, throughfall and stem flow) in Picea glehnii forests and neighboring Sphagnum communities in three ombrotrophic mires in Ochiishi district, northern Japan, to clarify the contribution of fog to nutrient addition to mires. Na+ and Cl dominated the bulk deposition, followed by Mg2+, Ca2+ and SO42–, implying an oceanic influence on mire chemistry. Differences in chemical properties among bulk deposition, throughfall and stem flow increased with proximity to the coastline. There was little difference in electrical conductivity (EC) among bulk deposition, throughfall and stem flow during the period of high fog frequency, which was approximately 17 fog days per month from June to August, but there were large differences in EC during the period of low fog frequency, which was approximately 5 fog days per month from September to November. In general, throughfall and stem flow were enriched with Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl and SO42– at the P.glehnii canopy, and seasonal trends in ionic concentration showed almost the same trend as EC. This seasonal pattern of atmospheric deposition chemistry showed that sea salt deposition on mires depends on fog occurrence. Sea salt is washed out of the atmosphere by fog when fog covers the forest canopy and, hence, throughfall and stem flow did not lead to the enrichment of chemical constituents during passage through the canopy in these mires during the season of high fog occurrence.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate associations between meteorological conditions and the number of emergency department visits for asthma in a childrens hospital in Ottawa, Canada. A case-crossover study design was used. Hospital emergency department visits for asthma between 1992 and 2000 were identified based on patients presenting complaints. We obtained hourly measures for the following meteorological variables: wind speed, temperature, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, and visibility. Particular emphasis was placed on exploring the association between asthma visits and fog, thunderstorms, snow, and liquid and freezing forms of precipitation. In total, there were 18,970 asthma visits among children between 2 and 15 years of age. The number of visits and weather characteristics were grouped into 6 h case and control intervals. The occurrence of fog or liquid precipitation was associated with an increased number of asthma visits, while snow was associated with a reduced number (P<0.05). Stratified analyses by season found no association in any of the four calendar intervals between the number of asthma visits and visibility, change in relative humidity and change in temperature. In contrast, summertime thunderstorm activity was associated with an odds ratio of 1.35 (95% CI=1.02–1.77) relative to summer periods with no activity. Models that incorporate calendar and meteorological data may help emergency departments to more efficiently allocate resources needed to treat children presenting with respiratory distress.  相似文献

Background

Tropical montane cloud forests (TMCFs) are characterized by a unique set of biological and hydroclimatic features, including frequent and/or persistent fog, cool temperatures, and high biodiversity and endemism. These forests are one of the most vulnerable ecosystems to climate change given their small geographic range, high endemism and dependence on a rare microclimatic envelope. The frequency of atmospheric water deficits for some TMCFs is likely to increase in the future, but the consequences for the integrity and distribution of these ecosystems are uncertain. In order to investigate plant and ecosystem responses to climate change, we need to know how TMCF species function in response to current climate, which factors shape function and ecology most and how these will change into the future.

Scope

This review focuses on recent advances in ecophysiological research of TMCF plants to establish a link between TMCF hydrometeorological conditions and vegetation distribution, functioning and survival. The hydraulic characteristics of TMCF trees are discussed, together with the prevalence and ecological consequences of foliar uptake of fog water (FWU) in TMCFs, a key process that allows efficient acquisition of water during cloud immersion periods, minimizing water deficits and favouring survival of species prone to drought-induced hydraulic failure.

Conclusions

Fog occurrence is the single most important microclimatic feature affecting the distribution and function of TMCF plants. Plants in TMCFs are very vulnerable to drought (possessing a small hydraulic safety margin), and the presence of fog and FWU minimizes the occurrence of tree water deficits and thus favours the survival of TMCF trees where such deficits may occur. Characterizing the interplay between microclimatic dynamics and plant water relations is key to foster more realistic projections about climate change effects on TMCF functioning and distribution.  相似文献

Introduction. Tropical montane forests support a high abundance and diversity of bryophytes and lichens on different substrates. However, quantitative information about how their biomass and water-holding capacity change with elevation is scarce. The current project assessed variation in the biomass and water-holding capacity of bryophytes and lichens on Baru Volcano, Panama.

Methods. On the western slope, the bryophyte and lichen layer was collected from 600?cm2 plots on six substrate types with four replications at eight elevations along a gradient from 1900 to 3300?m a.s.l. We recorded the thickness, water-holding capacity and biomass of all samples, as well as environmental parameters.

Key results. At lower elevations substrates had a similar biomass and water-holding capacity per area, but with increasing elevation terricolous substrates showed the strongest increase (highest values at 3100?m). These patterns are associated with climatic variation along the gradient. At the highest elevations, the forest was of low stature and more light reached the forest floor. Also at these high elevations fog provides a daily wetting of the bryophytes and lichens. At lower elevations the water supply is increasingly in the form of rain, which is less frequent than the fog.

Conclusions. The apparent strong coupling of biomass variations to precipitation regimes implies a high sensitivity of the bryophytes and lichens to climatic warming and changes in the cloud base elevation. Furthermore our data suggest that the importance of bryophytes and lichens for regulating ecosystem water fluxes increases with elevation, which underlines the necessity to conserve intact montane forests.  相似文献

The rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) is an important tropical crop with a high economic value that has been successfully cultivated in Xishuangbanna, China. Xishuangbanna has a long dry season (November–February) with cold nights and frequent fog events. Thus, it is important to select chilling-tolerant cultivars in order to understand better the role of fog in protecting rubber tree from chilling-induced photodamage. In this study, we examined the photosynthetic responses of six rubber tree cultivars (Lan 873, Yunyan 77-2, Yunyan 77-4, GT1, Reken 523, and Reyan 733-97) to night-chilling stress (0, 5, and 10°C) and two different irradiances (100 and 50% of full sunlight). Our results showed that all six cultivars could withstand nights at 10°C for three days, while night chilling at 0 and 5°C impaired photosynthesis, which was indicated by photoinhibition, decrease of soluble protein content, and accumulation of malondialdehyde. Reken 523 and Reyan 733-97 were more sensitive to night chilling than other cultivars. Low irradiance (50% of full sunlight) after the chilling treatment apparently mitigated the effect of night-chilling stress. It indicates that frequent fog events after cold nights might greatly contribute to the success of rubber tree cultivation in Xishuangbanna.  相似文献

Summary Midday closure of stomata of well-watered ( between-10 and-25 bar) or moderately stressed ( between-25 and-35 bar) Arbutus unedo plants occurs when midday leaf temperatures increase above 30°C and vapor pressure difference between leaf air spaces and the external air increases above approximately 30 mbar/bar. Moderate water stress decreases maximum conductance and may result in greater sensitivity to high leaf temperature and vapor pressure dificit, which results in earlier closure and later reopening of stomata. Severe water stress ( of-50 bar) changes the form of the daily pattern observed for leaf conductance. A single morning peak in conductance occurs followed by decrease in conductance over the remainder of the day. Morning fog in Portugal during the dry season may facilitate stomatal opening and may allow improvement of carbon balances of the leaves for short periods, but contributes little to improvement of plant water balances over the longer term.  相似文献

Conclusions There is no doubt that positive and negative ion concentrations are influenced by meteorological conditions. But this dependence on weather is due to the given atmospheric content and size of aerosol particles which the small ions attach to (Lassen and Rau, 1960). Consequently, minimum values are found in fog and low visibility, respectively, high values at high visibility, fair weather without precipitation, but also during foehn conditions. However, the latter are in no way distinguished by special features compared to other weather conditions that favor the increase of ion concentrations. This relates to ion concentrations of both signs as well as the ratio from positive to negative concentrations.On the basis of an extensive data material it was possible to confirm again what has been observed long time ago (Reiter, 1960). Weather-dependent effects of foehn ften claimed but never convincingly proved —can no longer be explained by abnormal ion conditions. This conception should once and for all be put to the realm of stories. Advertisements from the commercial side according to which strong excess and high concentrations of negative ions will generate a well-being like that in high mountains or other open countrysides are completely unfounded. It even needs to be pointed out that in a mountainous region during fair weather the ratio of the small ion concentration is shifted more towards positive ions. Similarly, this is true of conditions in roof-gardens and even balconies of multi-storey buildings.  相似文献

Conditions affecting rhizogenesis in vitro and ex vitro and subsequent acclimatisation of Telopea speciosissima (waratah) were investigated. Clonal selections were successfully rooted in vitro in agar, on filter paper bridges or using crushed quartz-sand, the last substrate resulting in superior growth of roots. The in vitro substrates were impregnated with half-strength MS, 7.5 gl-1 sucrose and various concentrations of IBA. For the quartz-sand, an IBA concentration of 50 M was optimal, 70% of microcuttings were rooted. No plantlets rooted in vitro were acclimatised to ex vitro conditions (using mist, fog or humidity tent regimes). Microcuttings (25–45 mm in length) were rooted ex vitro in a fog humidity regime (droplet size <10 m) using an IBA powder dip (3 g IBA kg-1). Neither a mist nor a humidity-tent regime was suitable for rooting of waratah microshoots ex vitro. A peat and perlite mixture was superior to crushed quartz-sand or potting mix for the rooting of microshoots; this appeared to be related to the air-filled porosity (>20%) of the mixture, measured after the medium was saturated and then drained for 24h. Plantlets must be left under the high humidity regime until shoot growth resumes (four to eight weeks) otherwise plant mortality increase significantly. Dog hemoglobin has four sulphydryl groups per (tetramer) molecule located at the G18(111)a and F9(93) positions. The two sulphydryls at the G18(111)a positions are unreactive toward nonmercurial sulphydryl reagents, but those at the F9(93) positions are reactive toward these reagents. We have studied the kinetics of the reaction of dog hemoglobin with 5,5-dithiobis (2-nitrobenzoic acid) as a function ofpH. At allpH values studied, the reaction is kinetically monophasic. Quantitative analysis of thepH dependence of the apparent second-order rate constant shows that two ionizable groups are linked to the reaction of the sulphydryl group. TheirpK a values are 5.57 and 9.0. These values are assigned to HisHC3(146) and to the CysF9(93) sulphydryl. We find that dog carbonmonoxyhemoglobin is significantly—almost an order of magnitude—less reactive than the aquomet, azidomet, and oxy derivatives. This result may be due to a greater tendency (at acidpH) for the salt bridge between HisHC3(146) and AspFG1(94) to form in the carbonmonoxy than in the other derivatives. Formation of this salt bridge is known to hinder access to the CysF9(93) sulphydryl [Perutz, M. F. (1970),Nature 228, 734–739].  相似文献

Present models of turbellarian evolution depict the organism with a frontal organ — a complex of glands whose necks emerge at the anterior tip of the body — and therefore imply that this organ is homologous throughout the Turbellaria. However, comparisons of representatives of the Acoela and Macrostomida, two putatively primitive orders of the Turbellaria, show that frontal organs in these two are not similar in ultrastructure or histochemistry. The acoel Convoluta pulchra had a prominent cluster of frontal mucous glands whose necks emerged together in a frontal pore at the exact apical pole of the organism, and an array of smaller glands of at least five other types opened at the anterior end, separately from and ventral to this pore. The frontal organs (Stirndrüsen) of two species of Macrostomum on the other hand, comprised an array of discretely emerging necks of at least two gland types including one with rhabdiform (rhammite) and one with globular mucous secretion granules neither of which emerge at the apical pole. In neither species did the organ appear to be sensory. Our findings indicate a low probability of homology between the frontal glands of the Acoela and Macrostomida.  相似文献

Mutations at the folded gastrulation (fog) and twisted gastrulation (tsg) loci interfere with early morphogenetic movements in Drosophila melanogaster. fog embryos do not form a normal posterior midgut and although their germbands do elongate, they do not extend dorsally. As a result, when normal embryos have fully extended germbands, the germbands in mutant embryos are folded into the interior on the ventral side of the embryo. tsg embryos have abnormally deep dorsal folds during early gastrulation, associated with the failure of dorsal cells to slip laterally to make way for the expanding germband. Both fog and tsg embryos continue to develop, but form disorganized first instar larvae. fog and tsg are zygotically active genes expressed at least by 10 and 20 min after the onset of gastrulation. Both mutations are viable in homozygous germ cells and the wild-type genes need not be expressed during oogenesis for survival of heterozygous progeny. Elimination of fog+ gene product from maternal germ cells does, however, affect the extent of folding observed during gastrulation in viable heterozygotes. Analysis of fog adult and larval gynandromorphs indicates that normal folded gastrulation gene function is only required at the posterior region of the embryo, most probably in the cells giving rise to the posterior midgut or proctodeum. The relative survival of fog mosaics suggests that embryos with mosaic "lethal foci" also die during embryogenesis, although the typical fog phenotype is only produced when the entire focus is mutant. In contrast to the fog focus, no particular cell must be wild type in tsg mosaics for survival. Wild-type cells on the dorsal side of the embryo, however, are most effective in rescuing the embryo. This indicates that normal tsg gene product may be required only on the dorsal side of the embryo, potentially in the region which gives rise to the amnion serosa.  相似文献

A series of eight histrionicotoxins and two synthetic analogs inhibit binding of [3H]batrachotoxinin B to sites on voltage dependent sodium channels in brain membranes. Perhydrohistrionicotoxin (IC50 0.33 M) and octahydrohistrionicotoxin (IC50 1.2 M) are comparable in activities to potent local anesthetics. Histrionicotoxin (IC50 17 M) and the other histrionicotoxins are much less potent. The histrionicotoxins also inhibit binding of [3H]phencyclidine to putative potassium channels in brain membranes. Histrionicotoxin (IC50 15 M) and the other histrionicotoxins are much more potent than perhydrohistrionicotoxin (IC50 200 M), but are at least 200-fold less potent than phencyclidine. The histrionicotoxins enhance binding of [3H]nitrendipine to sites on calcium channels in brain membranes, with the exception of perhydrohistrionicotoxin, which inhibits binding. Structure activity relationships at these channel sites and at the sites for noncompetitive blockers on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor channel (AChR) complex differ. The histrionicotoxins are more potent at the sites on the AChR complex than at sites on other channels with the exception of perhydrohistrionicotoxin, which has comparable potency at the AChR complex and sodium channels.  相似文献

Conformation of a nonhydrolyzable adenosine triphosphate (ATP) analogue, adenylyl-(,-methylene)-diphosphonate (AMPPCP) bound at the active site of yeast hexokinase-PII was determined by proton two-dimensional transferred nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (TRNOESY) and molecular dynamics simulations. The effect of the glucose-induced domain closure on the conformation of the nucleotide was evaluated by making measurements on two different complexes: PIIAMPPCPMg(II) and PIIGlcAMPPCPMg(II). TRNOE measurements were made at 500 MHz, 10°C, as a function of several mixing times varying in the range of 40 to 200 ms. Interproton distances derived from the analysis of NOE buildup curves were used as restraints in molecular dynamics simulations to determine the conformation of the enzyme bound nucleotide. The adenosine moiety was found to bind in high anti conformation with a glycosidic torsion angle = 48 ± 5 degrees in both complexes. However, significant differences in the conformations of the ribose and triphosphoryl chain of the nucleotide are observed between the two complexes. The phase angles of pseudorotation P in PIIAMPPCPMg(II) and PIIGlcAMPPCPMg(II) are 87 degrees and 77 degrees, describing a OE and OT4 sugar pucker and the amplitudes of the sugar pucker () are 37 degrees and 61 degrees, respectively.  相似文献

Summary The v x1 deficiency in Zea mays induces chromosomal nondisjunction during the megagametophyte divisions after meiosis producing large numbers of monosomes, trisomes, double monosomes, double trisomes, and even triple monosomes. In this study, microsporogenesis in six doubly monosomic combinations was analyzed. Double monosomes in a diploid organism provide the ideal material to determine if there is an interaction between two nonhomologous univalent chromosomes because two nonhomologous chromosomes lacking partners are present in each meiotic cell.At diakinesis and metaphase I, the two nonhomologous monosomic chromosomes were infrequently paired (3.76% and 2.18% respectively). These estimates are the upper estimates of pairing of nonhomologous monosomic chromosomes and probably represent an overestimate of these values because cells with any connections between the monosomic chromosomes were scored as having nine pairs and similar connections are not infrequently observed between two bivalents.The transmission of two nonhomologous unpaired chromosomes was deduced by studying the progeny of maize plants hyperploid for two chromosomes (a B4 and Wd ring). The two nonhomologous univalents disjoined randomly.Since no evidence for an interaction between nonhomologous univalent chromosomes which leads to their non-random disjunction to opposite poles was found in this study, these data confirm my earlier conclusion (Weber, 1966, 1969) that distributive pairing does not occur in maize (and probably most other plants) or that it occurs with a much lower efficiency than in Drosophila females. The frequent pairing between nonhomologous chromosomes at diakinesis and metaphase I and the non-random distribution at anaphase I in doubly trisomic maize plants reported by Michel and Burnham (1969) was found neither in my earlier studies (Weber, 1966, 1969) nor in the present study. The current study is far more sensitive than any of the previous studies because two nonhomologous chromosomes lacking pairing partners are found in every cell of a doubly monosomic plant.Research supported in part by U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Contract AT(11-1)-2121. Four distinctly crossbanded, stout polytene chromosomes are present in the nuclei of both the basal reservoir region and gland proper region of salivary glands of young larvae of the Cecidomyid Dasyneura crataegi. In older larvae, asynchronous progressive splitting of the chromosomes into oligotene fibrils occurs, underlining their truly polytene nature. Three nucleoli are present, located on two of the chromosomes. A series of massive puffs is also organised by one of the nucleolar chromosomes. Three other features of interest shown by the chromosomes of this species are (a) the centromeric association of only two, the nucleolar organising, chromosomes of the four present; (b) the high breakability of the centromeric regions of these two chromosomes; and (c) the marked heterochromatin proliferation which is found at these regions in older larvae. As in most Cecidomyids, the salivary glands are of complex structure with anterior basal reservoir and posterior gland proper zones. Marked differences in the relative and absolute sizes of these two regions are found during the development of the glands, which indicate that their names are inappropriate to their probable functions.  相似文献

Summary The electromotor system of the electric catfish (Malapterurus electricus) consists of two large ganglion cells situated in the spinal cord, two single axons containing electric nerves and two large electric organs with several million electroplaque cells. The small, irregularly stacked electroplaque cells possess at their center a crater-like indentation from which a stalk like protrusion arises. Many synaptic contacts derived from a single axon collateral are carried on lobe-like protrusions at the terminal knob of this stalk. The electric nerve consists of a large myelinated axon (diameter: 25 m) surrounded by many layers of connective tissue cells. The two ganglion cells (200 m in diameter) are rich in elements of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and lysosomal structures. The cytoplasm of the soma changes its appearance towards the voluminous axon hillock (50 m in diameter) which these organelles do not enter. The cell soma is perforated in a tunnel-like manner by blood capillaries, axons and processes of glial cells. The cell soma and dendrites are covered with two types of synapse. One type forms mixed chemical and electrical (gap junctions) contacts with intermediate attachment plaques. The other type is only chemical in nature. This system may be useful in the study of an identified vertebrate giant neuron.  相似文献

Summary The cycle of the nucleolus and sex chromosome was studied with the electron microscope during the following stages of spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis of Gryllus argentinus: (1) spermatogonia; (2) prophase cyte I, leptotene, part of pachytene, and end of diplotene till breakdown of the nuclear envelope; (3) division I, metaphase and anaphase; (4) cyte II, prometaphase; (5) division II, metaphase, anaphase and telophase; (6) early and late spermatids. Some observations were also carried out in the primary oocyte until beginning of the growth period.It was found that nucleolus and sex chromosome are associated, at first without mixture of their components (leptotene) and afterwards interchanging components (pachytene). The interchange takes place by the passage from one element to another of filamentous units ot low electron density, similar in appearance to those existing in the medial plane of tripartite groups (synaptinemal complexes).At pachytene the primary results of interchange are: (1) the nucleolus contains filaments of chromosomal nature; (2) the nucleolus emits a long rod-like prolongation containing a cylindrical bundle of filaments, and an axial unit of the same nature; two equidistant clear spaces separate the axial unit from the cylindrical bundle and the latter from the dark wall of nucleolar material. At the end of diplotene these components are found organized in two bodies and a prolongation. One of the bodies is formed by a number of alternatively dark and light bands, the other by a pack of tubular units each showing the structure of the former nucleolar prolongation. The prolongation is either formed as in the preceding stage or it is composed of five ribbons, two dark ones outside and three light ones between them. It is supposed that both bodies are united by the prolongation but no definite proof was obtained. It is assumed that the complex thus constituted represents the sex chromosome.The sex chromosome was found at any phase of both divisions as well as at the intermediate stages between them; at the division phase the chromosome is separated from the autosomes and moves independently of them.The element could not be traced at telophase II but it reappears within the reorganized nuclei of spermatids. Amorphous nucleolar-like material and chromosome-like material are found associated at this stage with banded complexes like those seen at the end of prophase I. All these components undergo involution during spermatid maturation. At the final step of maturation no traces of them are found.A similar association of nucleolus and chromosome was found at prophase of primary oocytes of the same species. The associated body is of the same structure as that described for primary spermatocytes. The structures existing in the primary oocytes disorganize at the beginning of growth. The identification of a cDNA (MR19) corresponding to a maize -tubulin and homologous genomic clones (MG19/6 and MG19/14) is described. The cDNA has been isolated by differential screening of a cDNA maize root library. We have found two -tubulin genes in a tandem arrangement in the genomic clones, separated by approximately 1.5 kbp. One of the genes (gene I) contains an identical nucleotide sequence which corresponds to the cDNA clone. The two deduced proteins from DNA sequences are very similar (only two conservative replacements in 451 amino acids) and they share a high homology as compared with the published -tubulin sequences from other systems and in particular with the Arabidopsis thaliana and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii sequences reported. The structure of both genes is also very similar; it includes two introns, of 1.7 kbp and 0.8 kbp respectively, in each gene and only one intron placed at a homologous position in relation to Arabidopsis thaliana genes. By using specific 3 probes it appears that both genes are preferentially expressed in the radicular system of the plant. The -tubulin gene family of Zea mays seems to be represented by at least 3 or 4 members.  相似文献

Diel vertical migration (DVM) and diel feeding rhythm of two cladocerans, Daphnia longispina and Bosmina coregoni were investigated at the pelagic area of Lake Toya (Hokkaido, Japan) in May, August and October 1992. Both species performed nocturnal DVM. The amplitude of DVM, however, became smaller from May to October. Such seasonal variations in DVM could not be explained by light penetration and/or water temperature. The two species had a clear feeding rhythm; they fed at night in May and October but also after sunrise in August. These feeding rhythms appeared to be related to the light-dark cycle, but were not necessarily associated with their DVM. We suggest that the diel feeding rhythm and DVM are regulated independently by light cues.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for crystalline -cyclodextrin dodecahydrate (-CD) at two different temperatures, 293 K and 120 K, have been performed using the GROMOS program package. The calculated structural properties are compared to those obtained from neutron diffraction studies of this system at the quoted temperatures. The simulation was carried out over a period of 20 ps on four unit cells containing 8 -CD molecules and 96 water molecules, whereby all atoms were allowed to move.At room temperature, the experimental positions of the (non-hydrogen) glucose atoms are reproduced within 0.034 nm, a value which is smaller than the experimental (0.041 nm) or simulated (0.049 nm) overall root mean square (rms) positional fluctuation. The corresponding numbers for the low temperature study are 0.046 nm, 0.019 nm and 0.022 nm. At both temperatures the experimentally observed degree of anisotropy of the atomic motions is also found in the simulations.The comparison of a variety of structural properties leads to the conclusion that the molecular model and force field used are able to simulate the cyclodextrin system very well. Experimentally observed differences in properties as a function of number of glucose units in the CD molecule (-CD, 6 versus -CD, 7) and as a function of temperature are qualitatively reproduced by the simulations.  相似文献
