Although inducible defenses are an important component of the defense systems of a range of modular organisms, little is known about inducible defenses of octocorals. A localized inducible response against multiple enemies was detected in the Caribbean sea fans Gorgonia ventalina L. and G. flabellum L. Field surveys showed that localized purpling, resulting from an increase in the proportion of purple sclerites, was associated with overgrowth by Millepora alcicornis and macroalgae, and infection by the fungus Aspergillus sydowii. To confirm inducibility and to assess specificity of the response, a range of treatments—abrasion, cable tie, M. alcicornis, sea fan tissue infected with A. sydowii (diseased allografts), and healthy allografts—was applied to healthy sea fans. After 10 days, all biotic treatments induced a localized physical response consisting of changes in concentration, type, and color of sclerites; however, antifungal activity of non-polar chemical extracts was unaffected. The purpling response appears to be specific to biotic agents and reduces tissue damage in subsequent interactions.Communicated by H. Lasker  相似文献

The freshwater macrophyte Cabomba caroliniana induces a chemical defense when attacked by either the crayfish Procambrus clarkii or the snail Pomacea canaliculata. Induction by either consumer lowers the palatability of the plant to both consumers. When offered food ad libitum, snails feeding on non-induced C. caroliniana grew 2.6–2.7 times more than those feeding on induced C. caroliniana. Because snails fed less on induced plants, this could be a behavioral effect (reduced feeding), a physiological effect of the induced metabolites on the consumer, or both. To assess these possibilities, we made artificial diets with lipid extracts of induced versus non-induced C. caroliniana and restricted control snails to consuming only as much as treatment snails consumed. Growth measured as shell diameter was significantly lower on the diet containing extract from induced, as opposed to non-induced, plants; change in snail mass was more variable and showed a similar, but non-significant, trend. Thus, snails may reduce feeding on induced plants to avoid suppression of fitness. The induced defenses also suppressed growth of co-occurring microbes that might attack the plant through herbivore-generated feeding scars. When two bacteria and three fungi isolated from C. caroliniana surfaces were cultured with the lipid extract from induced and non-induced C. caroliniana, both extracts inhibited the microbes, but the induced extract was more potent against three of the five potential pathogens. Thus, induced plant defenses can act against both direct consumers and microbes that might invade the plant indirectly through herbivore-generated wounds.  相似文献

Summary Many tropical brown algae have low levels of polyphenolic compounds and are readily consumed by herbivorous fish. In contrast, temperate brown algae often produce large quantities of phenolic compounds causing them to be distasteful to herbivorous gastropods and sea urchins. We hypothesized that tropical brown algae do not use phenolic compounds as antiherbivore defenses because these compounds are not effective deterrents against tropical fish. To test our hypothesis, we assessed the ability of extracts from 8 tropical and 13 temperate algae with a broad range of phenolic levels to deter feeding by herbivorous fishes on Guam. Extracts of the high-phenolic (>2% d.w.) temperate brown algae consistently deterred feeding by herbivorous fishes, whereas extracts from low phenolic (<2% d.w.) temperate and 6 of 8 low-phenolic tropical brown algae did not. Thus, phenolic compounds could be effective feeding deterrents towards herbivorous fishes on Guam, but for unknown reasons they are not used by Guamanian brown algae.  相似文献

The population structure of benthic marine organisms is of central relevance to the conservation and management of these often threatened species, as well as to the accurate understanding of their ecological and evolutionary dynamics. A growing body of evidence suggests that marine populations can be structured over short distances despite theoretically high dispersal potential. Yet the proposed mechanisms governing this structure vary, and existing empirical population genetic evidence is of insufficient taxonomic and geographic scope to allow for strong general inferences. Here, we describe the range‐wide population genetic structure of an ecologically important Caribbean octocoral, Gorgonia ventalina. Genetic differentiation was positively correlated with geographic distance and negatively correlated with oceanographically modelled dispersal probability throughout the range. Although we observed admixture across hundreds of kilometres, estimated dispersal was low, and populations were differentiated across distances <2 km. These results suggest that populations of G. ventalina may be evolutionarily coupled via gene flow but are largely demographically independent. Observed patterns of differentiation corroborate biogeographic breaks found in other taxa (e.g. an east/west divide near Puerto Rico), and also identify population divides not discussed in previous studies (e.g. the Yucatan Channel). High genotypic diversity and absence of clonemates indicate that sex is the primary reproductive mode for G. ventalina. A comparative analysis of the population structure of G. ventalina and its dinoflagellate symbiont, Symbiodinium, indicates that the dispersal of these symbiotic partners is not coupled, and symbiont transmission occurs horizontally.  相似文献

We examined 22 species of algae and two species of seagrasses from coral reef habitats around Guam to determine if they possessed chemical defenses against the acanthurid Naso lituratus. Whole plants (18 species) were offered to determine whether they were preferred or avoided by N. lituratus in the laboratory. Organic extracts of 15 algae and one seagrass were applied to palatable seaweeds and offered to N. lituratus in the laboratory to determine if the seaweeds were chemically defended. Extracts that deterred feeding were further fractionated if sufficient amounts were available, and the fractions and associated pure compounds were tested in similar feeding assays. N. lituratus was significantly deterred from feeding by crude extracts from five different species of algae: Avrainvillea obscura, Bryopsis pennata, grazed Halimeda macroloba, Neomeris annulata, and Portieria (=Desmia) hornemannii. The pure compounds avrainvilleol from A. obseura, ochtodene from P. hornemannii, one fraction and one brominated sesquiterpene from N. annulata, and two fractions from T. expeditionis also deterred feeding. These results, together with previous work, suggest that tropical herbivorous fishes differ in their responses to plant chemistry, and this variability precludes broad generalization about the effects of marine plant secondary metabolites on herbivorous fishes.  相似文献

Abstract

Crude root extracts of the black beetle-resistant legumes red clover, white clover, lupin, Lotus pedunculatus, and lucerne significantly reduced feeding by 3rd-instar black beetle larvae when incorporated in an artificial medium containing a strong feeding stimulant. The same extracts were toxic when administered orally. Lucerne and L. pedunculatus contain particularly active feeding deterrents and toxins. The root of the black beetle-resistant grass Phalaris aquatica (= P. tuberosa), like that of the susceptible perennial ryegrass, had no effect on larval feeding or survival. Lotus pedunculatus was very much more active against black beetle larvae than L. corniculatus or L. corniculatus × pedunculatus.  相似文献

When large, predatory fishes and invertebrates were excluded from areas of a coral reef in the Florida Keys, USA, densities of the normally rare gastropod Cyphoma gibbosum, a principal predator of gorgonian corals, increased 19-fold. Gorgonians in predator exclosures were grazed more frequently and extensively by C. gibbosum than were gorgonians in uncaged areas. In exclosures, 14% of all gorgonians showed recent predation by C. gibbosum, with 62% of the entire colony surface being removed from these attacked individuals. In areas where predators of C. gibbosum were not excluded, only 5% of gorgonians exhibited recent damage, with only 26% of the colony surface being removed from these few damaged individuals. Thus, the increases in both frequency and extent of attack combined to produce an 8× increase in gorgonian damage following removal of large predators. These patterns suggest that predators typically suppress C. gibbosum populations, that overfishing of these predators could release C. gibbosum from top-down control, and that this release will allow increased damage to gorgonian corals.  相似文献

Summary Many coral-reef seaweeds and sessile invertebrates produce both secondary chemicals and mineral or fibrous skeletal materials that can reduce their susceptibility to consumers. Although skeletal materials often have been assumed to function as physical defenses, their deterrent effectiveness may derive from their reduction of prey nutritional quality as well as from noxiousness of the skeletal material itself. To test the relative importance of prey nutritional quality and chemical defenses in susceptibility to predation, we offered reef fishes on Guam a choice of artificial foods varying in nutritional quality (4% versus 22% protein) and in secondary chemistry (spanning approximately natural concentration ranges). Field feeding assays were performed with pachydictyol A from the pantropical brown seaweed genus Dictyota, manoalide from the Micronesian sponge Luffariella variabilis, and a brominated diphenyl ether from the Micronesian sponge Dysidea sp. The results indicated that chemical defenses were less effective in high- than in low-quality foods. In paired assays with metabolite-free controls, all three compounds at natural concentrations significantly reduced feeding by reef fishes only in assays using low-quality food, and not in assays with high-quality food. When fishes were offered an array of artificial foods varying in both food quality and metabolite concentration, food quality significantly affected fish feeding in all three cases, while secondary chemistry was significant in only one. Thus differences in nutritional quality, within the natural range among reef organisms, can be comparable to or greater in importance than secondary chemistry in affecting feeding preferences of their consumers. Reduced nutritional quality may be an important selective advantage of producing indigestible structural materials, in addition to their roles as physical support and defense, in coral reef organisms.  相似文献

Halimeda spp. are among the most common seaweeds on tropical reefs where herbivory is intense. These calcified seaweeds produce diterpenoid feeding deterrents; the major metabolites are halimedatetraacetate and halimedatrial. We found that most species of Halimeda on Guam immediately convert the less-deterrent secondary metabolite halimedatetraacetate to the more potent feeding deterrent halimedatrial when plants are injured by grinding or crushing. This conversion would therefore occur when fishes bite or chew Halimeda plants. We term this process of rapid conversion “activation”. Extracts from injured plants contained higher amounts of halimedatrial and were more deterrent toward herbivorous fishes than extracts from control plants. Herbivore-activated defenses are common in many families of terrestrial plants: however, this is the first example of an activated defense in a marine plant.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Feeding discrimination of Manduca larvae reared on leaves and a variety of artificial media was tested against leaves, various media, solvent fractions of leaves and media, and media components, including pure chemicals. Field-collected animals showed the same preferences as did animals cultured in the laboratory for many generations. Rearing larvae on a leaf species, an artificial diet, or homogenized leaves added to artificial diet induced a preference for that food in subsequent choice tests. Extracts of these foods using organic solvents (particularly hexane) elicited feeding choices resembling those evoked by the foods themselves: water extracts were effective as stimulants or deterrents, but responses to them differed considerably from responses to the foods. Animals raised on a defined artificial diet showed an increased preference (or decreased deterrence) for the lipid component (linolenic acid) of that diet in behavioural tests. Thus induction of preference was shown to be influenced by a specific nutrient compound. Fifteen artificial diets were tested; three were successful, including a completely defined medium. Various components of the diets were tested for feeding preferences, both as omissions from the main diet and as pure compounds. Some were stimulatory, most were neutral or slightly deterrent; a few were strongly deterrent. With the exception of linolenic acid, preferences for pure compounds were not significantly correlated with the food on which the animals were reared. The data suggest that food discrimination depends on the perception of a complex chemical message comprised of both polar and non-polar compounds, with the latter being of somewhat greater importance. The results are consistent with the explanation of the induction of feeding preferences being due to a reduced responsiveness to deterrents, to an increased preference for feeding stimulants or to both.  相似文献

Plant structural traits often act as defenses against herbivorous insects, causing them to avoid feeding on a given plant or tissue. Mineral crystals of calcium oxalate in Medicago truncatula Gaertn. (Fabaceae) leaves have previously been shown to be effective deterrents of lepidopteran insect feeding. They are also inhibitors of conversion of plant material into insect body mass during or after consumption. Growth of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), larvae was correspondingly greater on calcium oxalate‐defective (cod) mutants of M. truncatula with lower levels of crystal accumulation. Data presented here show that insects feeding on M. truncatula leaves with calcium oxalate crystals experience greater negative effects on growth and mandible wear than those feeding on artificial diet amended with smaller amorphous crystals from commercial preparations. Commercial calcium oxalate can be added to insect artificial diet at levels up to 7.5‐fold higher than levels found in wild‐type M. truncatula leaves with minimal effect on insect growth or lepidopteran mandibles. These data suggest that negative impacts of calcium oxalate in the diet of larvae are due to physical factors, and not toxicity of the compound, as high levels of the commercial crystals are readily tolerated. In contrast to the dramatic physical effects that M. truncatula‐derived crystals have on insect mandibles, we could detect no damage to insect peritrophic gut membranes due to consumption of these crystals. Taken together, the data indicate that the size and shape of prismatic M. truncatula oxalate crystals are important factors in determining effects on insect growth. If manipulation of calcium oxalate is to be used in developing improved insect resistance in plants, then our findings suggest that controlling not only the overall amount, but also the size and shape of crystals, could be valuable traits in selecting desirable plant lines.  相似文献

Sensitivity of the cabbage butterfly,Pieris rapae L. to feeding deterrents was compared for larvae reared on different food sources under laboratory conditions. Since cabbage-reared larvae normally reject nasturtium,Tropaeolum majus L., the effects of previous exposure to allelochemicals on larval acceptance or rejection of this plant were also examined. When compared with cabbage-reared larvae, nasturtium-reared larvae were less sensitive to feeding deterrents including cymarin, erysimoside and 2-O-β-d-glucosyl cucurbitacin E. Nasturtium-reared larvae were insensitive to chlorogenic acid, which was deterrent to cabbage-reared larvae. Feeding by larvae reared on a wheat germ diet was not deterred by these compounds. The results indicate that dietary experience can extensively affect larval sensitivity to feeding deterrents and that cross habituation of larvae to deterrents occurs in response to certain chemical constituents of nasturtium and wheat germ diet. Digitoxin, however, proved to be an exception. Larvae reared on either nasturtium or wheat germ diet were as sensitive to digitoxin as those reared on cabbage. Previous results have shown that rejectionof nasturtium by cabbage-reared larvae is due to the presence of strong feeding deterrents in this plant. However, more than 50% of 2nd instar larvae reared from neonate on cabbage leaves treated with strophanthidin, cymarin, erysimoside, digitoxigenin and digitoxin accepted nasturtium as a food source. 2-O-β-d-glucosyl cucurbitacin E, 2-O-β-d-glucosyl cucurbitacin I and rutin were also active in causing larvae to feed on nasturtium. Thus dietary exposure to unrelated plant chemicals can profoundly affect insect acceptance of a plant that contains feeding deterrents.  相似文献

Ganoderma is a genus of medicinally and economically important mushrooms in the family Ganodermataceae. Ganoderma species are popular medicinal mushrooms and their health benefits are well-documented. Ganoderma is a cosmopolitan genus that is widely distributed in both tropical and temperate regions. This genus is characterized by its unique laccate or non-laccate species with double-walled basidiospores. Here, we report on eight collections of G. gibbosum collected during surveys in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. The specimens are described and illustrated based on macro- and micro-morphological characteristics. Total DNA of the eight G. gibbosum strains were extracted using the Biospin Fungal Extraction Kit following manufacturer protocol. Amplification of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (nrITS) region was carried out using ITS5/ITS4 primers and LROR/LR5 for the nuclear ribosomal large subunit 28S rDNA gene (LSU). Phylogenetic analysis with closely related species to G. gibbosum showed that all eight collections grouped with G. gibbosum with 100% bootstrap support. Phylogenetic similarity and morphological variations within the eight collections of G. gibbosum are discussed.  相似文献

To evaluate the role of predation in the evolution of diet specialization and to determine the effectiveness of various larval defenses, we offered lepidopteran larvae to colonies of the tropical ant Paraponera clavata. We recorded behavioral and physical characteristics of prey items and used log-linear models to analyze their importance as deterrents to predation by P. clavata. The most important determinant of probability of prey rejection by P. clavata was a prey's diet breadth; specialists were rejected by the ants significantly more than generalists. Other less important, but significant, predictors of prey rejection included ontogeny, morphology and chemistry. Late instar caterpillars were rejected more frequently than early instars, hairy caterpillars were rejected more frequently than caterpillars with other morphologies, and one caterpillar species with an unpalatable extract was rejected more frequently than two species with palatable extracts.  相似文献

In this study, the demography of the common demosponge Ircinia felix was examined at Tamarindo, a coral reef located in the island municipality of Culebra, Puerto Rico. A preliminary study comparing the size structure of two subpopulations within the reef, Tamarindo Norte (TN) and Tamarindo Sur (TS), indicated that sponges at TN are significantly larger than sponges at TS. This result served as a baseline for the present comparative study in which we aimed to determine whether the spatial differences in population size structure can be explained either by a difference in rates of survival, growth, or recruitment, or a combination of these. To accomplish our goal, we followed the growth, survival and recruitment of I. felix at the two localities for one year. Growth was the only demographic parameter that differed significantly between localities. Because the most obvious distinction between the study sites was the absence of the octocoral Gorgonia ventalina at TS, we hypothesized that the faster overall growth rate of sponges at TN was related to the presence of the octocoral. To test this hypothesis, we compared growth rates between sponges associated with the octocoral and those individuals not associated. We found that sponges growing near G. ventalina grew significantly faster than non-associated sponges. This result suggests that the octocoral facilitates the growth of I. felix and therefore may account, at least in part, for the spatial differences in population size structure.  相似文献

Summary Small, relatively sedentary herbivores like amphipods and polychaetes (mesograzers) often live on the plants they consume and should therefore view plants as both foods and living sites. Large, relatively mobile herbivores like fishes commonly move among, and feed from, many plants; they should view plants primarily as foods and rarely as potential living sites. In marine communities, fishes that consume plants are also important predators on mesograzers. Since seaweeds avoided by fishes should represent safer living sites for small herbivores, mesograzers living on and consuming seaweeds that are not eaten by fishes should have higher fitness than mesograzers living on plants preferred by fishes. In previous work, we demonstrated that seaweed secondary metabolites that deterred feeding by a fish and sea urchin had no effect on feeding by a common amphipod (Hay et al. 1987a). We then hypothesized that mesograzers would, in general, be less affected by seaweed chemical defenses than larger, more mobile herbivores like fishes. In this investigation, we evaluate the generality of this hypothesis by comparing the feeding of an omnivorous fish (Lagodon rhomboides) with that of an omnivorous, tube-building polychaete (Platynereis dumerilii) to see if the mesograzer prefers seaweeds avoided by the fish and if it is less affected by seaweed chemical defense. Platynereis dumerilii fed almost exclusively on Dictyota dichotoma, the seaweed eaten least by Lagodon rhomboides. The diterpene alcohols (dictyol-E and pachydictyol-A) produced by Dictyota significantly deterred feeding by Lagodon but did not affect, or at one concentration stimulated, feeding by Platynereis. Our data support the hypothesis that small, relatively sedentary herbivores that live on plants are more resistant to chemical defenses than are large, relatively mobile herbivores that move among many plants.  相似文献

Antarctic sponges are commonly fouled by diatoms, sometimes so heavily as to occlude pores employed in filter feeding and respiration. This fouling becomes heavier during the annual summer microalgal bloom. Polar and non‐polar extracts of eight species of marine sponges from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica were assayed for cytotoxicity against sympatric fouling diatoms. To identify compounds potentially released by sponges as defenses against diatom biofouling, only fractions of crude extracts that were soluble in seawater or 2% methanol in seawater were assayed. Significant bioactivity was present in seven of the eight species. Both Mycale acerata and Homaxinella balfourensis displayed moderate levels of defense against diatoms even though they are not or are only weakly chemically defended against bacteria and predators. Calyx acuarius extracts, which do have antipredator and antibacterial effects, had no effect on diatoms except at levels many fold higher than present in the intact animal. These results strongly suggest some level of specificity for chemical defenses against diatom fouling in antarctic sponges.  相似文献

The diet and feeding ecology of 12 cyprinid fishes were studied in the Thalayanai stream of southern India. The diet of Barbodes sarana, Danio aequipinnatus and Rasbora daniconius were specialized in terrestrial and aquatic insects. Hypselobarbus dobsoni and Garra mullya consumed vegetative matter and unicellular algae as their most important dietary component, respectively. Hypselobarbus curmuca and Hypselobarbus dubius specialized in crustaceans and molluscs. Puntius amphibious, Puntius bimaculatus, Puntius dorsalis, Puntius filamentosus and Puntius tambraparniei fed on variety of food resources (aquatic insects, algae and detritus) and their feeding intake varied between wet to dry seasons. Levin’s index of diet breadth showed the broadest diets for P. dorsalis in both seasons, whereas G. mullya had a narrow feeding spectrum in both seasons. Among co-existing species, diet overlaps were substantially low during both wet and dry season. These results suggest that feeding specialization and low diet overlap reduce inter-specific competition, allowing co-existence of these cyprinid fishes in this highly structured stream assemblage.  相似文献

Fresh bracken Pteridium aquilinum L. Kühn or crude bracken extracts deterred 9 non-adapted phytophagous insect species from feeding or settling. Feeding deterrent activity to 5 out of 7 insect species was present in crude bracken extracts at all times over the growing season and was significantly highest in May. Sequential isolation and purification of deterrents indicated that the sesquiterpene pterosin F (6-chlorethyl-2,5,7-trimethyl-indan-1-one) occurred in sufficiently high concentrations in late May/early June bracken frond (24–28 mg/kg fresh wt) to be partially responsible for the deterrent effects of crude bracken extracts to two insect species. A number of other fractions had feeding deterrent activity, but these were not characterized or quantified.  相似文献
