The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there are any effects of skin temperature changes on sweating response in the first few minutes of mild exercise. Six healthy males performed a bicycle exercise at 100 W (50 rpm) for 30 min under an ambient temperature of 23° C (40% RH). Esophageal temperature (T es), mean skin temperature (T– sk), local skin temperature at the lower left scapula (T sl), local sweating rate (M. sw), and cutaneous blood flow by laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) were measured continuously. Although T sl decreased markedly just after the onset of sweating, T– sk did not change. M. sw did not increase constantly in the early stages of exercise, and there was a temporary interruption in the increase of M. sw. This interruption in sweating was affected by the rate of change in T sl rather than by the absolute value of T sl, since there was a positive and significant correlation between the time of the interruption in the increase of M. sw and the rate of decrease in T sl (y=6.47x+0.04; r=0.86, P<0.05). The results suggest that sweating response in the early stages of exercise may be influenced by changes in local skin temperature due to evaporative cooling. The whole body sweating response was measured at rest in eight women during the follicular (F) and the luteal (L) phases of the menstrual cycle. Subjects were exposed for 30-min to neutral (N) environmental conditions [ambient temperature (Ta) 28 degrees C] and then for 90-min to warm (W) environmental conditions (Ta, 35 degrees C) in a direct calorimeter. At the end of the N exposure, tympanic temperature (Tty) was 0.18 (SEM 0.06) degrees C higher in the L than in the F phase (P less than 0.05), whereas mean skin temperature (Tsk) was unchanged. During W exposure, the time to the onset of sweating as well as the concomitant increase in body heat content were similar in both phases. At the onset of sweating, the tympanic threshold temperature (Tty,thresh) was higher in the L phase [37.18 (SEM 0.08) degrees C] than in the F phase [36.95 (SEM 0.07) degrees C; P less than 0.01]. The magnitude of the shift in Tty,thresh [0.23 (SEM 0.07) degrees C] was similar to the L-F difference in Tty observed at the end of the N exposure. The mean skin threshold temperature was not statistically different between the two phases. The slope of the relationship between sweating rate and Tty was similar in F and L. It was concluded that the internal set point temperature of resting women exposed to warm environmental conditions shifted to a higher value during the L phase compared to the F phase of the menstrual cycle; and that the magnitude of the shift corresponded to the difference in internal temperature observed in neutral environmental conditions between the two phases.  相似文献

To examine the mechanisms underlying the age-related decrement in the ability to sweat, seven older (64-76 years) and seven younger (20-24 years) men participated in a 60-min sweating test. The test consisted of placing the subject's lower legs in a water bath at 42 degrees C while sitting in a controlled environment of 35 degrees C ambient temperature and 45% relative humidity. The rectal (Trc) and skin temperatures, local sweating rates (m(sw): on the forehead, chest, back, forearm and thigh) and the frequency of sweat expulsion (f(sw)) were measured during the test. No group difference was observed in the mean body temperature (Tb) throughout the passive heating, although the older men had a higher Tre and a lower mean skin temperature during the last half of the 60-min test. There were no group differences in the Tb threshold for sweating, although the time to the onset of sweating tended to be longer for the older men regardless of body site. The m(sw) increased gradually for approximately 35 min after the start of heat exposure in the older men and for 30 min in the younger men and then reached a steady state. During the first half of the test, the older men had a significantly lower m(sw) at all sites. During the last half of the test, only m(sw) on the thigh was significantly lower in the older men than in the younger men. There was no group difference in the slope of f(sw) versus Tb (an indicator of the change in the central sudomotor response to thermal input). The slope of m(sw) versus f(sw) (an indicator of the change in peripheral activity in response to central sudomotor changes) was significantly lower on the thigh in the older men, but there were no differences for the other sites. These results suggest that in older men the lower thigh m(sw) observed during the last half of the heat test was possibly due to age-related modifications of peripheral mechanisms involving the sweat glands and surrounding tissues. It was not due to a change in the central drive to sudomotor function. Furthermore, the sluggish m(sw) responses in the older men appear to have been related to age-related modifications of the sensitivity of thermoreceptors in various body regions to thermal stimuli. They may also involve lower sweat glands' sensitivity to cholinergic stimulus or sluggish vasodilatation, and do not reflect age-related changes in the central drive.  相似文献

Based on the hypothesis that the relation between sweating rate and body temperature should be different during exercise and rest after exercise, we compared the sweating response during exercise and recovery at a similar body temperature. Healthy male subjects performed submaximal exercise (Experiment 1) and maximal exercise (Experiment 2) in a room at 27° C and 35% relative humidity. During exercise and recovery of 20 min after exercise, esophageal temperature (Tes), mean skin temperature, mean body temperature ( ), chest sweating rate ( ), and the frequency of sweat expulsion (F SW) were measured. In both experiments, andF SW were clearly higher during exercise than recovery at a similar body temperature (Tes, ). was similar during exercise and recovery, or a little less during the former, at a similarF SW. It is concluded that the sweating rate during exercise is greater than that during recovery at the same body temperature, due to greater central sudomotor activity during exercise. The difference between the two values is thought to be related to non-thermal factors and the rate of change in mean skin temperature.  相似文献

To evaluate the mechanism of potentiation of sweating after long-term physical training, we compared sweating function in trained and untrained subjects using the frequency of sweat expulsion (f sw) as an indicator of central sudomotor activity. Nine trained male subjects (trained group) and eight untrained male subjects (untrained group) performed 30-min cycle exercise at 35% maximal oxygen uptake at 25°C ambient temperature and 35% relative humidity. Oesophageal temperature (T oes), mean body temperature b, chest sweating rate ( sw,chest), forearm sweating rate ( forearm), andf sw were measured. The slopes of the sw,chest versus body temperature (T oes and b) and versusf sw relationships in the trained group were significantly greater than those in the untrained group (both,P < 0.05), while there was no difference between the groups in the slopes of the sw,chest versus body temperature or versusf sw relationships. Neither the body temperature threshold for initiation of chest or forearm sweating nor the slope of thef sw- b relationship differed between groups. We concluded that, during light exercise at moderate ambient temperature, the sw,chest in the subjects who had undergone long-term physical training was greater than that in the untrained subjects while the sw,forearm was not changed. The greater sw,chest in the trained subjects was concluded to be due to an increase of sensitivity of peripheral mechanisms.  相似文献

Sweating rate, rectal and skin temperatures and respiration rate were measured at weekly intervals from 7 days of age (for 4 weeks in Experiment 1; 6 weeks in Experiment 2) in winter- and summer-born Friesian calves exposed to a temperature of 39°C dry bulb and 32°C wet bulb in a climate chamber. Four calves were studied in each season in both experiments. In Experiment 1, ambient temperatures were from 3° to 9°C higher in early summer than in late winter. During each 39°C exposure, sweating rate increased from basal levels of 40–90 to plateau levels of 120–300 g/m2 per h after 90–120 min. The increase in sweating rate with age was most pronounced in winter-born calves, but summer-born calves had higher values at 1 week of age (167±52.4 vs 94.4±30.1 g/m2 per h). Seasonal differences in ambient temperature were greater in Experiment 2 (11° to 17°C). In this case summer-born calves had higher sweating rates at each age (plateau values of 220–320 g/m2 per h), and showed a more rapid increase in sweating rate during each 39°C exposure than winter-born calves (plateau values of 100–250 g/m2 per h). The results demonstrate major changes in sweating competence during the first 4–6 weeks of life in Friesian calves, a quite pronounced effect of season (ambient temperature) on the levels of sweating achieved, and indicate that low sweating rates in newborn calves are a contributing factor in deaths due to hyperthermia in semi-arid grazing areas.  相似文献

To examine the core-shell model of temperature distribution and the possible role of subcutaneous temperature in heat regulation, comprehensive temperature measurements were made on six nude resting men exposed for 2-3 h to comfort (27 degrees C), cold (15 degrees C) and heat (45 degrees C). Cold produced strong shivering and heat caused heavy sweating. Temperatures were recorded every 10 min from: esophagus, rectum and auditory canal; back muscle and thigh muscle at 20 mm and 40 mm depths; 6 subcutaneous sites; and 16 skin sites. Average temperatures at these 29 sites were tabulated at the ends of comfort, hot and cold and the onsets of sweating and shivering. Body temperature changes were slow to develop, the skin temperatures being fastest, and successively deeper tissues progressively slower. There was occasional after-drop and after-rise. The data were consistent with the core-shell concept. The temperature gradient from subcutaneous tissue to skin, which differed substantially with comfort, the onset of shivering and the onset of sweating, could serve as a regulatory signal. The data are now in computer format and may be of interest to biothermal modelers.  相似文献

Evaluation of mean skin temperature formulas by infrared thermography   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
To study the reliabiliity of formulas for calculating mean skin temperature (T sk), values were computed by 18 different techniques and were compared with the mean of 10,841 skin temperatures measured by infrared thermography. One hundred whole-body infrared thermograms were scanned in ten resting males while changing the air temperature from 40° C to 4° C. Local, regional average and mean skin temperatures were obtained using an image processing system. The agreement frequency, defined as the percentage of the calculated T sk values which agreed with the corresponding infrared thermographic T sk within ±0.2° C, ranged for with the various formulas from 7% to 80%. In many sites, the local skin temperature did not coincide with the regional average skin temperature. When the local skin temperatures which showed the highest percentage similarity to the regional average skin temperature within ±0.4° C were applied to the formula, the agreement frequency was markedly improved for all formulas. However, the agreement frequency was not affected by changing the weighting factors from specific constants to individually measured values of regional surface area. By applying the physiologically reliable accuracy range of ±0.2° C in the moderate and ±0.4° C in the cool condition, agreement frequencies of at least 95% were observed in formulas involving seven or more skin temperature measurement sites, including the hand and foot. We conclude that calculation of a reliable mean skin temperature must involve more than seven skin temperature measurement sites regardless of ambient temperature. Optimal sites for skin temperature measurement are proposed for various formulas. Received: 2 December 1996 / Accepted: 25 June 1997  相似文献

Natives of the tropics are able to tolerate high ambient temperatures. This results from their long-term residence in hot and often humid tropical climates. This study was designed to compare the peripheral mechanisms of thermal sweating in tropical natives with that of their temperate counterparts. Fifty-five healthy male subjects including 20 native Koreans who live in the temperate Korean climate (Temperate-N) and 35 native tropical Malaysian men that have lived all of their lives in Malaysia (Tropical-N) were enrolled in this study after providing written informed consent to participate. Quantitative sudomotor axon reflex testing after iontophoresis (2 mA for 5 min) with 10% acetylcholine (ACh) was used to determine directly activated (DIR) and axon reflex-mediated (AXR) sweating during ACh iontophoresis. The sweat rate, activated sweat gland density, sweat gland output per single gland activated, and oral and skin temperature changes were measured. The sweat onset time of AXR (nicotinic-receptor-mediated) was 56 s shorter in the Temperate-N than in the Tropical-N subjects (P < 0.0001). The nicotinic-receptor-mediated sweating activity AXR (1), and the muscarinic-receptor-mediated sweating activity DIR, in terms of sweat volume, were 103% and 59% higher in the Temperate-N compared to the Tropical-N subjects (P < 0.0001). The Temperate-N group also had a 17.8% (P < 0.0001) higher active sweat gland density, 35.4% higher sweat output per gland, 0.24°C higher resting oral temperature, and 0.62°C higher resting forearm skin temperature compared to the Tropical-N subjects (P < 0.01). ACh iontophoresis did not influence oral temperature, but increased skin temperature near where the ACh was administered, in both groups. These results suggest that suppressed thermal sweating in the Tropical-N subjects was, at least in part, due to suppressed sweat gland sensitivity to ACh through both recruitment of active sweat glands and the sweat gland output per each gland. This physiological trait guarantees a more economical use of body fluids, thus ensuring more efficient protection against heat stress.  相似文献

Cytological details of endosperm development after pollination with irradiated pollen were studied in Actinidia deliciosa (kiwifruit) cultivar Hayward. Pollinations were carried out involving five different sources of pollen (Matua, Tomuri, Burt, Berryman, and fruiting male) irradiated with gamma rays at doses of 700 and 900 Gy. Non-irradiated crosses were used as controls. Irradiated pollen induced development of approximately 25–30% of the ovules. Two types of ovules were observed: (1) with both embryo and endosperm and (2) with endosperm only. No mitotic abnormalities were found in control or irradiated endosperms. Mitotic divisions were regular and nuclei spherical and evenly spaced. However, the cells of irradiated endosperm usually contained low amounts of storage products. Ploidy level of the endosperms was evaluated by nuclear size (volume) with the use of image analyzis. Mean nuclear size in control and irradiated endosperms was 1598.3 and 750.9 μm3, respectively. It is concluded that endosperm produced after pollination with irradiated pollen is autonomous and represents the 2n level. Received: 14 October 1998 / Revision accepted: 10 March 1999  相似文献

Spectral reflectance and transmittance of leaves to ultraviolet irradiation were determined under laboratory conditions for seven species of hardwood trees, namely red oak (Quercus rubra, L), black oak (Q. velutina, Lamarch), white oak (Q. alba, L.), sugar maple (Acer saccharum), Norway maple (A. plantanoides), hickory (Carya tomemtosa), sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), and black oak litter. The experimental system consisted of a solar simulator, an integrating sphere, and a spectroradiometer. Experiments were repeated three to five times for both adaxial and abaxial surfaces of fresh leaves chosen at randomly. The spectral distributions and simple averages of the radiative properties in the wavelength ranges of ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280–320 nm) and ultraviolet-A (UV-A, 320–400 nm) were determined. The spectral distributions of reflectance were similar between adaxial and abaxial surfaces, although the magnitude varied among tree species. Leaf reflectance was very low for the ultraviolet spectrum in general and varied among species and between adaxial and abaxial surfaces. It was generally higher over the UV-A waveband compared to UV-B, and higher on the abaxial than adaxial surface. The broadband reflectance in the UV-A range (over all species) was 5.0 and 3.9% for abaxial and adaxial surface, respectively, compared to 3.5 and 2.8% in UV-B. The transmittance through leaves was extremely small in the UV-B (<0.1%) and nearly zero in the UV-A spectral range. Consequently, the absorptance of ultraviolet radiation by leaves, as determined from the measured reflectance and transmittance, was quite high, being more than 90% for all the combinations of species and wavebands examined. The reported results are useful for studies requiring spectral radiative properties of the examined leaves with respect to ultraviolet irradiation.  相似文献

柚树(Citrus grandis)叶片光合作用对补增UV-B辐射的响应   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

Abstract Continuous unilateral microbeam (1 mm) irradiation of coleoptiles of Avena saliva L. produces growth responses in non-irradiated regions of the organ. Irradiation of the apex is followed by differential growth which commences in the apical zone, but then moves in a basipetal direction and results in positive curvature. Irradiation of the base also results in differential growth which commences at the apex and moves basipetally. However, the growth differential in this case results in negative curvature. The results of basal irradiation suggest the likely occurrence of acropetal transmission of the phototropic signal. The rate of movement of this signal is faster than the documented rate of auxin transport.  相似文献

Effect of hypoxia (12% O2) on skin temperature recovery was studied on healthy young men. Forty male volunteers free of any respiratory disorder were randomly selected to participate in the study. Skin temperature, peripheral blood flow, heart rate and end expiratoryPO2 andPCO2 were measured. During hyoxic ventilation the peripheral blood flow was reduced and a corresponding drop in skin temperature occurred. This was partly due to hyperventilation associated with hypoxic ventilation. The recovery of skin temperature after cooling the hand for 2 min in cold water (10–12° C) took 5.5±0.1 min during normal air breathing; during hypoxic ventilation even after 9.1±0.3 min when the skin temperature recovery curve plateaued, the skin temperature remained about 2° C below control. The results of the present investigation indicate that hypoxia interferes with the normal functioning of the thermoregulatory mechanism in man. Hyperventilation associated with hypoxic ventilation is also partly responsible for incomplete recovery of skin temperature.  相似文献

Rate of force development (RFD) plays an important role when performing rapid and forceful movements. Cold-induced afferent input with transient skin cooling (SC) can modulate neural drive. However, the relationship between RFD and SC is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether SC increases RFD during isometric knee extension. Fifteen young healthy men (25 ± 8 yrs old) contracted their quadriceps muscle as fast and forcefully as possible with or without SC. Skin cooling was administered to the front of the thigh. Torque and electromyographic activity were measured simultaneously. Peak torque was not affected by SC. Skin cooling induced a significant increase in RFD at the phase 0–30 and 0–50 ms. The root mean square of the electromyography of vastus medialis, rectus femoris and vastus lateralis at the phases 0–30–50–100 ms increased significantly or tended to increase with SC. These results suggest that SC may increase neural drive and improve RFD in the very early phases of contraction.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of moderate treadmill exercise session on body surface and core temperature in dog measured by means of two infrared instruments. Ten Jack Russell Terrier/Miniature Pinscher mixed-breed dogs were subjected to 15 min of walking, 10 min of trotting and 10 min of gallop. At every step, body surface temperature (Tsurface) was measured on seven regions (neck, shoulder, ribs, flank, back, internal thigh and eye) using two different methods, a digital infrared camera (ThermaCam P25) and a non-contact infrared thermometer (Infrared Thermometer THM010-VT001). Rectal temperature (Trectal) and blood samples were collected before (T0) and after exercise (T3). Blood samples were tested for red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin concentration (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct). A significant effect of exercise in all body surface regions was found, as measured by both infrared methods. The temperature obtained in the eye and the thigh area were higher with respect to the other studied regions throughout the experimental period (P<0.0001). RBC, Hb, Hct and Trectal values were higher at T3 (P<0.05). Statistically significant higher temperature values measured by infrared thermometer was found in neck, shoulder, ribs, flank, back regions respect to the values obtained by digital infrared camera (P<0.0001). The results obtained in this study showed that both internal and surface temperatures are influenced by physical exercise probably due to muscle activity and changes in blood flow in dogs. Both infrared instruments used in this study have proven to be useful in detecting surface temperature variations of specific body regions, however factors including type and color of animal hair coat must be taken into account in the interpretation of data obtained by thermography methodology.  相似文献

Summary In 1876, Darwin observed that tendrils of Pisum sativum oriented the long axis of their circumnutational sweep to keep it approximately normal to the direction of the sun's rays. Using various types of irradiation sources, the present study confirms Darwin's findings. Although blue light slightly increases the rate of circumnutation, only infrared irradiation (i.e. heat), effects the reorientation. The response can therefore be termed Diathermotropic. Diathermotropism in circumnutating tendrils is probably a device to bend the leaves of the elongating weak-stemmed plant away from the shade and toward the sun.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to describe the dependence on ambient temperature of distal joint temperature at the forelimbs of racehorses. The study also investigated the influence of differing ambient temperatures on the temperature difference between joints: this was measured ipsilaterally (i.e. between the carpal and fetlock joints along each forelimb) and contralaterally (i.e. between the same joints of the left and right forelimbs). Sixty-four healthy racehorses were monitored over 10 months. At each session, three thermographic images were taken of the dorsal, lateral and medial aspects of the distal forelimbs. Temperature measurements were made from regions of interest (ROIs) covering the carpal and fetlock joints. There was a strong correlation between ambient temperature and absolute joint temperature at all ROIs. The study also observed a moderate correlation between ambient temperature and the ipsilateral temperature differences between joints when measured from the medial and lateral aspects. No significant correlation was noted when measured dorsally. The mean contralateral temperature differences between joints were all close to 0 °C. The data support previous reports that the temperature distribution between the forelimbs of the healthy equine is generally symmetric, although some horses differ markedly from the average findings.  相似文献

Infrared thermography (IRT) was used to assess surface temperature change as an indirect measure of muscle activity and exercise associated changes in blood flow in the working hind limb muscles of horses (n=7) undergoing water treadmill exercise. Three treatments were investigated including the treadmill ran dry (TD), water at the height of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) and water at the height of the carpus (CP). Maximum skin surface temperature was recorded from the region of the semitendinosus muscle during exercise at each water height. There was a significant difference in surface hind limb temperature between exercise on the water treadmill ran dry and with water at the height of the PIP and CP (P<0.0001) with hotter temperatures recorded during the TD treatment. There was a greater increase in surface temperature of the hind limbs from pre exercise to maximum temperature during the PIP and CP treatments when compared to the TD treatment, however, this was not significant (P=0.58). There was no significant difference in surface hind limb temperature found between exercise in water at the height of the PIP and water at the height of the CP. The findings from this study suggest that IRT is able to non-invasively detect muscle activity and associated changes in blood flow whilst horses are exercised on a water treadmill. IRT could potentially be used as an alternative method to assess muscle activity and temperature change in an aquatic environment where existing methods present methodological challenges.  相似文献
