Epidemiological studies were performed in a Japanese fishing village when catches of fish were highest and in a Japanese farming village with usual fish consumption. Intake of eicosapentaenoic, docosahexaenoic and also arachidonic acid were significantly higher in the fishing village during the 3 days of the study than in the farming village. The correlation between eicosapentaenoic acid intake on the day when urine was collected and excretion of delta 17-2,3-dinor-6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha, the main urinary metabolite of prostaglandin I3, was highly significant, whereas there was no correlation between arachidonic or linoleic acid intake and excretion of 2,3-dinor-6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha, the main urinary metabolite of prostaglandin I2. We suggest that the arachidonic acid pool for prostaglandin I2 production is not quickly influenced by dietary linoleic or arachidonic acid because of a large pool size of arachidonic acid and a slow conversion of linoleic acid to arachidonic acid, while prostaglandin I3 formation is directly related to the intake of eicosapentaenoic acid.  相似文献

We measured PGI2-, PGI3-, and TXA2/3-M (the main urinary metabolites of prostacyclin and thromboxane of the two and three series) in 24-hour urine in a fishing village (21 participants) and a farming village (19 participants) in Japan, expecting to find more PGI3-M in the fishing village than in the farming village. The food consumption for three consecutive days prior to a blood collection was recorded and analyzed for eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) content. Urine was collected for 24 hours prior to the blood sampling. When our studies were performed (April, 1985), catches of fish were the lowest on record around the fishing village, and the consumption of EPA in the fishing village was less than half of that in the farming village. EPA levels in red cell membrane phospholipids were higher in the fishing village than in the farming village. PGI2-, PGI3-, and TXA2/3-M levels were higher in the farming village than in the fishing village. There was a significant correlation between PGI2- and PGI3-M (r=0.80, n=40) and between PGI3-M and the EPA consumption during the day of urine collection (r=0.52, n=40). We conclude that PGI3 production is probably dependent less on the levels of EPA in tissues estimated by the EPA levels in red cell membranes than on the EPA consumption at the moment.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that mortality from cardiovascular diseases in fishing villages was lower than that in farming villages. In contrast, few reports on the population living in a tourist village have appeared. Then, we report here the characteristic features of a tourist town, and that in fishing and farming towns. The rural farming town in Gunma prefecture had a population of 15,100. The population working in the primary industry was 17.1%, and the farming population was 17.0%. The fishing town in Shizuoka prefecture had a population of 11,700. The population working in the primary industry was 11.0%, and the fishing population was 10.2%. The rural tourist town in Shizuoka prefecture had a population of 17,800. The population working in the tertiary industry was 60.2%, and the wholesaling or retailing population was 16.6%. Standardized mortality ratios of cardiovascular diseases in the tourist town reported by Shizuoka health officials were higher than the fishing town. The rate of participation at ages of 50-59 years for the basic health examination in the tourist town was lower than the fishing and the farming towns. From the results of the health examination of residents at ages of 50-59 years, the high prevalence of obesity and hypertension in men and high prevalence of hypertension in women were found in the tourist town. In the tourist town, self-employed women at ages of 50-59 years had irregular time of meals and insufficient care of diet in comparison with employed women. Furthermore, the prevalence of hypertension in self-employed women was also higher than that of employed women. We could suggest that health status in communities might be associated with job-related factors.  相似文献

Maternal and umbilical fatty acid status in relation to maternal diet   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The aim of this study was to describe the dietary fat intake during pregnancy and to study the relationship between the intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and the fatty acid composition of maternal and umbilical plasma phospholipids (PLs) and cholesterol esters (CEs) at delivery. In addition, the contribution of food groups to the intake of total fat and fatty acids in the diet was quantified.Maternal and umbilical blood samples were collected at delivery from 30 healthy pregnant women. The women completed a food frequency questionnaire during the first and third trimesters. The total fat intake during pregnancy is 85 (SD 24) g/day. The mean intake of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) is 33.4 g/day, of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) 28.6 g/day and of PUFA 15.2 g/day. Major sources of fat, MUFA and PUFA are fats, oils and sauces. Major sources of SFA are meat and poultry followed by cheese and eggs. Meat and poultry contribute the most to the intake of 20:4n-6 whereas fish is the major source of 20:5n-3 (EPA) and 22:6n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) in the diet. Linoleic acid, EPA and DHA (w%) in PL of maternal plasma are positively related to the intake of these fatty acids during pregnancy. No association is found between the maternal intake of the two parent essential fatty acids (18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3) and their fraction in umbilical PL or CE. EPA and the sum of n-6 fatty acids (w%) in umbilical plasma PL are positively correlated with the dietary intake of these fatty acids.  相似文献

Recent epidemiologic studies have shown that rates of cardiovascular disease are lower in populations such as the Greenland Eskimos than in those that do not eat seafood, even though the levels of dietary fat intake are often similar. Dietary fish oils are rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid of the omega-3 series. EPA has been shown to prolong bleeding time and to decrease platelet aggregation and blood viscosity. EPA inhibits the production of prostaglandins from endogenous arachidonic acid, which is associated with the formation of thromboxane A2 and may also dampen cyclo-oxygenase and lipoxygenase metabolites involved in mediating endothelial cell proliferation. Dietary fish oils are now available in the form of EPA-enriched capsules. Short-term trials in humans have shown that EPA significantly reduces the levels of plasma triglycerides and may increase the levels of high-density lipoproteins; however, no consistent effect on serum cholesterol levels has been shown. The results of evaluations of EPA''s use in patients with renal disorders, mild hypertension, inflammatory disorders or hyperlipidemia have been promising. On the basis of the epidemiologic and biologic evidence dietary fish oils warrant further study in extensive clinical trials.  相似文献

The fat content and fatty‐acid profiles of herring, Clupea harengus membras, from the southern Baltic Sea varied depending on when (fishing season) and where (fishing grounds) the fish were caught as well as on their size and sex. The fat, protein and dry matter content and the fatty‐acid profiles were assayed in C. h. membras muscle tissue. The changes observed in fatty‐acid profiles were determined by factors such as specimen mass and fat content, which, in turn, depended on fishing season. This is explained by dietary differences between juvenile and older fish. Gonad maturation and spawning in the latter are also factors. The study results provide confirmation of the hypothesis that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), in particular docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), play vital roles in the sexual maturation of C. h. membras.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the transfer of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6) from fish oil into goats’ milk. Goats were sequentially offered three diets: control (C) pellets (lucerne hay-oat grain: 60/40 w/w), C plus tuna oil protected against ruminal biohydrogenation (PTO pellets), and C plus unprotected tuna oil (UTO pellets). In supplemented diets, tuna oil constituted 3% of total dry matter (DM), and each supplement was fed for 7 days, with 12 days allowed between the two fish oil feeding periods to minimise carry-over effects. Dry matter intake, milk yield, protein and fat yield were reduced by feeding UTO, but not PTO, pellets. Goats produced ω-3 enriched milk (0.3–0.5% EPA and 1.01–1.12% DHA) when fed either supplement. The rate of transfer of dietary EPA and DHA to milk ranged from 3.5 to 7.6%. Significant transfer of EPA and DHA from tuna oil into goat milk, without deleterious effects on intake or milk yield is possible, provided that the oil supplement is substantially protected against ruminal biohydrogenation.  相似文献

Seven-week old female rats fed restricted foods including the fish oils Docosahesaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and perilla oil with food intake decreased by 50%, had increases of fracture force and bone mineral density (BMD) and decreases in levels of Deoxypiridinoline (Dpd) and Calcium (Ca) in the urine, compared with those of rats with osteoporosis due to restricted soy bean oil food intake. Therefore, the fish oils DHA and EPA and perilla oil depressed excretion of urinary Ca and inhibited osteoporosis due to restricted food intake.  相似文献

Using marine reserves to estimate fishing mortality   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The proportion of a fish stock that is killed by fishing activity is often calculated as the catch divided by the estimated stock biomass. However, stock biomass is notoriously difficult to estimate reliably, and moreover, the catch may be uncertain or misreported and does not include losses due to discarding. In all too many fisheries, these difficulties have lead to underestimates of total fishing mortality and the commercial demise of the fishery. No‐take marine reserves eliminate fishing mortality from within their boundaries and, for species that exhibit seasonal migratory behaviour, comparison of reserves with fished areas can provide direct estimates of the proportion killed by fishing. For an important exploited species in New Zealand, seasonal changes in density of sub‐legal fish at three marine reserves were similar in both reserve and adjacent non‐reserve areas. However, this result did not hold for legal‐size fish, and the difference in seasonal change between reserved and non‐reserved areas was used to obtain direct estimates of the total localized fishing mortality in the non‐reserve area over 6‐month periods. Estimates of the percentage of legal‐size fish killed by fishing ranged from 70 to 96%. These results demonstrate an unanticipated practical benefit from marine reserves that goes beyond their ecological role.  相似文献

Dietary fat influences the physico-chemical properties of meat, and fatty acid (FA) composition may have implications on human health. The objectives of the experiment were to study tissue FA partitioning and the effect of dietary fat source on tissue FA composition. Seventy crossbred gilts (61.8 ± 5.2 kg BW average) were fed one of seven treatments: a diet containing a very low level of fat (no fat (NF)) and six fat-supplemented diets (10%: tallow (T), high-oleic sunflower oil (HOSF), sunflower oil (SFO), linseed oil (LO), fat blend (FB: 55% tallow, 35% SFO, 10% LO) and fish oil blend (FO: 40% fish oil, 60% LO). Differential tissue FA depositions were observed, with flare fat being the most saturated, followed by intermuscular, and subcutaneous being the least saturated. Monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) deposition showed an opposite tissue pattern. Subcutaneous fat showed the highest MUFAs, intermuscular fat showed intermediate values and flare fat showed the lowest MUFAs. Intramuscular polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content was less susceptible to dietary treatment modifications compared with other depots. Significant tissue FA modifications were observed due to dietary treatments, mainly in diets rich in PUFA. The saturated fatty acids (SFA) were high in NF-fed and low in HOSF-fed animals, MUFA were high in HOSF-fed and low in SFO-, LO- and FO-fed animals, while PUFA were high in SFO- and LO-fed and low in HOSF-, T- and NF-fed animals. Pigs fed LO and FB showed detectable levels of EPA, which depended on the linolenic content of the diet. The only effective way to increase tissue DHA contents was to add DHA in the diet through FO feeding. Araquidonic acid was high in SFO diets and low in LO and FB diets, and also high in intramuscular fat compared with other tissues. EPA and DHA were also high in intramuscular fat compared with other fat depots. The deposition of oleic and linoleic acids depended on the composition of dietary fat, as their deposition varied between diets, even at similar levels of intake of each FA. The NF diet resulted in the greatest proportion of SFAs (palmitic and stearic) of all treatments tested. SFAs were less susceptible to modification than MUFA in response to the different PUFA levels supplemented in the diet. T resulted in less fat deposition in some of the fat depots and more in others, suggesting that T could partition fat differently among fat depots.  相似文献

Postprandial activation of hemostatic factors: role of dietary fatty acids   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Intake of dietary fat is an important determinant of the plasma concentration of triacylglycerol-rich lipoproteins, and the degree of alimentary lipemia is reported to have effects on hemostatic status including platelet function. Although association between the amount of dietary fat intake, lipemic response and certain cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors (VIIa and PAI-1) has been reported, the significance of the fatty acid composition of ingested fat for the postprandial lipid concentrations and the hemostatic factors is still unclear. Accumulating evidence suggests a relationship between dietary fatty acids and emerging hemostatic CVD risk factors, although much of this evidence is incomplete or conflicting. In order to improve our knowledge in this area, sufficient sample size in future studies are required to take into account of the genetic variation (gene polymorphisms for VII, PAI-1), sex, physical activity, stage of life factors, and sufficient duration to account for adaptation for definitive conclusions.  相似文献

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cerebral injury after ischemia-reperfusion (I/R). Fish n-3 essential fatty acids (EFA), contain eicosapentaenoic acids (EPA) and docosahexoenoic acids (DHA), exhibit antioxidant properties. DHA is an important component of brain membrane phospholipids and is necessary for the continuity of neuronal functions. EPA prevents platelet aggregation and inhibits the conversion of arachidonic acid into thromboxane A(2) and prostaglandins. They have been suggested to be protective agents against neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. In this study, the neuroprotective effects of fish n-3 EFA on oxidant-antioxidant systems and number of apoptotic neurons of the hippocampal formation (HF) subjected to cerebral I/R injury was investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats. Six rats were used as control (Group I). Cerebral ischemia was produced by occlusion of both the common carotid arteries combined with hypotension for 45 min, followed by reperfusion for 30 min, in rats either on a standard diet (Group II) or a standard diet plus fish n-3 EFA (Marincap((R)), 0.4 g/kg/day, by gavage) for 14 days (Group III). At the end of procedures, the rats were sacrificed and their brains were removed immediately. The levels of malonedialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were measured in left HF. In addition, the number of apoptotic neurons was counted by terminal transferase dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL) assay in histological samples of the right HF. We found that SOD activities and MDA levels increased in Group III rats compared with Group II rats. On the other hand, CAT activities and NO levels were found to be decreased in Group III rats compared with Group II rats. Additionally, the number of apoptotic neurons was lower in Group III in comparison with Group II rats. The present findings suggest that fish n-3 EFA could decrease the oxidative status and apoptotic changes in ischemic rat hippocampal formation. Dietary supplementation of n-3 EFA may be beneficial to preserve or ameliorate ischemic cerebral vascular disease.  相似文献

Dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids has been positively correlated with cardiovascular and neuropsychiatric health in several studies. The high seafood intake by the Japanese and Greenland Inuit has resulted in low ratios of the omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), with the Japanese showing AA:EPA ratios of approximately 1.7 and the Greenland Eskimos showing ratios of approximately 0.14. It was the objective of this study to determine the effect of supplementation with high doses (60 g) of flax and fish oils on the blood phospholipid (PL) fatty acid status, and AA/EPA ratio of individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), commonly associated with decreased blood omega-3 fatty acid levels. Thirty adults with ADHD were randomized to 12 weeks of supplementation with olive oil (< 1% omega-3 fatty acids), flax oil (source of alpha-linolenic acid; 18:3n-3; alpha-LNA) or fish oil (source of EPA and docosahexaenoic acid; 22:6n-3; DHA). Serum PL fatty acid levels were determined at baseline and at 12 weeks. Flax oil supplementation resulted in an increase in alpha-LNA and a slight decrease in the ratio of AA/EPA, while fish oil supplementation resulted in increases in EPA, DHA and total omega-3 fatty acids and a decrease in the AA/EPA ratio to values seen in the Japanese population. These data suggest that in order to increase levels of EPA and DHA in adults with ADHD, and decrease the AA/EPA ratio to levels seen in high fish consuming populations, high dose fish oil may be preferable to high dose flax oil. Future study is warranted to determine whether correction of low levels of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids is of therapeutic benefit in this population.  相似文献

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) carries an increased vascular risk due to lifelong elevation of the number of circulating low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles, but also to alterations in triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) metabolism. Supplementation with eicosapentaenoic (EPA) or docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids reduced LDL particle number and/or increased LDL size in different populations, but studies in FH are scarce. We investigated cross-sectionally whether intake of EPA and DHA in the usual diet is associated with a less atherogenic lipoprotein profile in subjects with FH (n=215). Lipoprotein particle number and size distributions were assessed with nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. EPA and DHA proportions in serum phosphatidylcholine, a biomarker of fish intake, were determined by gas chromatography. After adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors, including fasting triglycerides, serum phosphatidylcholine EPA (but not DHA) related inversely to medium VLDL, total LDL particle number and very small LDL, resulting in a net direct association with LDL size. Additionally, EPA was directly associated with concentrations of large HDL. We conclude that increased serum phosphatidylcholine EPA derived from seafood intake with the usual diet is associated with a less atherogenic lipoprotein profile in subjects with FH. Increased fish intake and/or EPA supplements might contribute to reduce the residual risk of statin-treated FH subjects.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo quantify dietary intake of secondary education students in Badajoz, Spain, evaluating food frequency use in teenagers of both sexes.Material and methodsThe study sample consisted of 1197 secondary education students (49.9% male and 50.1% female). After giving informed consent, they completed a self-administered food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) including 51 food items divided into five separate categories. This questionnaire was modified from the one used at the Valencian Community in 2003 and previously validated in a pilot study on 374 students.ResultsMale and females students reported higher intakes of 70.6% and 17.6% of foods analyzed respectively, while intake of 11.8% of food items was similar in both sexes. Sex differences were statistically significant for 35% of foods (of which 72% and 28% were taken more frequently by males and females respectively). Intake of milk and dairy products appeared to be adequate, while intake of fish and seafood was low consumption of meat products was high. Intake of vegetables, fruits, bread, and cereals was below the recommended levels. Intake of pasta, rice, and oils was adequate, and there was not a high consumptio of cookies or industrial pastries. There was an excess intake of sweets, but intake of soft drinks was not high.ConclusionsThese results show intermediate values as compared to other national surveys.  相似文献

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and cardiovascular disease risk factors   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Numerous epidemiological and controlled interventional trials have supported the health benefits of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in the form of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) plus eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) from fish and fish oils as well as from algal sources. The beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease and related mortality including various risk factors for cardiovascular disease (particularly lowering circulating triglyceride levels and the triglyceride:HDL-cholesterol ratio) have been observed in the absence of any concomitant blood cholesterol lowering. With appropriate dosages, consistent reductions in both fasting and postprandial triglyceride levels and moderate increases in fasting HDL-cholesterol levels have been observed with algal DHA in the majority of trials. These results are similar to findings for fish oils containing DHA and EPA. Related to greater fish intake, higher levels of DHA in circulating blood biomarkers (such as serum phospholipid) have been associated with reduced risks for the progression of coronary atherosclerosis and lowered risk from sudden cardiac death. Controlled clinical trials have also indicated the potential for algal DHA supplementation to have moderate beneficial effects on other cardiovascular disease risk factors including blood pressures and resting heart rates. Recommended intakes of DHA+EPA from numerous international groups for the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease have been forthcoming, although most have not offered specific recommendations for the optimal individual intake of DHA and EPA.  相似文献

1. Platelet phospholipid compositions were studied in four species of phocid seals consuming herring or herring and shrimp and in human subjects consuming a normal mixed diet. 2. There were no major differences in platelet phospholipid, cholesterol and protein levels between different species of seal nor between seals and human subjects, nor in the relative abundance of the individual types of phospholipid. 3. The seal platelet phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), were greatly enriched in the omega 3 fatty acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and depressed in arachidonic acid (AA) relative to the corresponding human platelet phospholipids. 4. Much less accumulation of EPA in phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylinositol (PI) was found. 5. The EPA contents of the individual seal platelet phospholipids exhibited considerable differences (including EPA discrimination from PI) but gave patterns which were generally similar to those reported for human volunteers consuming fish/fish oils enriched in EPA. 6. These results suggest that the seal platelet may be a useful model for studying the metabolism and function of the omega 3 fatty acids, such as EPA, in relation to platelet reactivity, phospholipid turnover and the formation of AA- and EPA-derived eicosanoids.  相似文献

The n-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) regulate hepatic lipid and glucose metabolism; however, EPA and DHA are naturally present in human diets in foods of animal origin, which are generally high in protein with variable triglycerides and uniformly low amounts of carbohydrate. We used dietary information for 611 individuals of 1.5-66 years to address whether EPA and DHA are associated with protein, but not fat intake. EPA, DHA and arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) intakes were positively associated with protein, but not fat intake, whereas linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and α-linolenic acid (18:3n-3) intakes were positively associated with fat, but not protein intake. Children 1-3 years of age have lower EPA and DHA intakes than children over 4 years or adults. Recommendations regarding EPA and DHA intake should focus on protein sources, rather than diet fat, and consider their potential roles in amino acid and protein metabolism.  相似文献
