Pinealectomized rats did not differ from pseudooperated animals in the time of onset, degree and duration of apomorphine-induced stereotypy. However, pinealectomy normalized stereotypy during repeated apomorphine injections to young (7-8 weeks), but not old (26-28 weeks) rats, slowing down minute fluctuations of stereotyped motions.  相似文献

Workers in many insect societies interact via body contact withtheir nest mates, and social biting and other forms of contactmay play a general role in regulating task performance. HereI present evidence that social biting affects task performancewithout direct reproductive conflict in Polybia occidentalis,a swarm-founding eusocial wasp. Polybia occidentalis workersengaged in social biting with nest mates. Most workers thatwere active on the nest surface participated in biting interactions,but individuals differed significantly in their rates of biting and of being bitten. Rates of being bitten corresponded withnonreproductive task performance: more biting was directedat foragers than nonforagers, and foraging rates were correlatedwith rates of being bitten. Furthermore, some on-nest workersinitiated foraging activity immediately after they were bitten.Together these patterns suggest that social biting influencesforaging rates by increasing workers' probabilities of leavingthe nest. Variation in biting rates did not correspond withdifferences in reproductive physiology: highly active bitersand recipients did not differ in body size or in ovary development.In P. occidentalis and in other eusocial insects with largeworker forces, biting and other types of social contact amongworkers may regulate task performance independently of directreproductive competition.  相似文献

The phenomenon of fighting was investigated under laboratory conditions using polecats ( Mustela putorius, M. furo and interspecific hybrids). Diadic interactions between male polecats were recorded on 16 mm cine film in an unfamiliar area of 16 m2, one individual having been introduced ten minutes before its opponent.
The behaviour patterns involved in fighting are described and their frequencies of occurrence, duration and average bout lengths specified. Biting, which occupied 41% of the animal's time in fighting, and attacking, which made up 27% of the bouts of behaviour, were the most important actions involved in fighting. Polecats most commonly bite their opponent's neck and bites in this region were the longest in duration. Success in gaining a bite was influenced by the opponent's behaviour at the time of the attack.
Polecats fight when one individual bites its opponent and the opponent retaliates by biting; bite was shown to be the commonest response to being bitten. The length of a fight appears to be determined by the levels of motivation to bite of the two opponents, while biting and being bitten operate as a positive feed back mechanism. The fight terminates when the more aggressive opponent ceases to make spontaneous attacks. The reasons why one individual wins a fight are that it consistently spends more time than its opponent in biting, it persists for longer in making spontaneous attacks and its method of attacking is more efficient.  相似文献

Abstract Devil facial tumour disease (DFTD), is an emerging infectious cancer thought to be spread by biting. It is causing ongoing, severe population decline of the Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii), the largest surviving marsupial carnivore and there are concerns that DFTD may lead to extinction of the devil. Whether extinction is likely depends on contact rates and their relationship to host density. We investigated contact rates using two different datasets. The first consisted of field observations of contact and biting behaviour around prey carcasses and, the second was a 3‐year longitudinal series of injuries in a marked devil population. During feeding interactions at carcasses, contact rates were significantly positively associated with population density and subadults delivered more bites than adult males and females. Injuries from the marked devil population did not differ between adult males and females. In two of the three years, penetrating biting (resulting in injury) increased markedly during the mating season and was more frequent in adults than in subadults. Among injured devils with wounds penetrating the dermal layer, adults were more frequently bitten in the head (the location of primary tumours) in the mating season than in other seasons, and had more head bites than subadults. Our results suggest that the mating season may be the key period for disease transmission. If most penetrating bites occur during mating interactions, DFTD transmission is likely to be frequency dependent, which means that there would be no threshold host density for disease persistence, and disease‐induced extinction is possible.  相似文献

Abstract.Tsetse flies probe more on a heated surface with a trace of uric acid than on one without. Uric acid is one of the components of human sweat and it elicits spike responses from taste hairs on the flies' legs. In this paper it is examined how heat from the surface and taste interact to affect the biting behaviour of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes Newstead 1910 (Diptera: Glossinidae) over successive days of food deprivation. The biting behaviour consists of bouts of probing, both ambulatory and stationary, intercalated with short hops of flight. The number of bouts increases over successive days, whereas the average bout duration does not. Although uric acid alone could not induce the flies to probe, in combination with surface heat it affected the flies greatly. Average bout duration was two‐fold that on a heated surface not treated with uric acid. The frequency of bouts was not affected by uric acid. These experiments and auxiliary ones on mechanoreceptive input and odours lead to the insight that the factors which affect biting behaviour can be viewed as a hierarchy. The hierarchy extends from those that affect the onset of biting to those that affect its course.  相似文献

The duration of startles provides an inverse measure of motivation to resume the previous activity. Here, we use a novel method in which one convict cichlid fish (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) of a competing pair was startled independently of the opponent. Fish were given various opponents and the mean startle duration determined. This mean was negatively correlated with the mean use of highly escalated ‘frontal activities’ such as biting and frontal display, but not the less escalated lateral displays or tail beating. Thus the startle duration was a reliable surrogate measure of the most escalated components of aggressive interactions. That is, it provided a motivational probe for aggressiveness of individual fish. Fight motivation is often determined in terms of fight duration or physiological costs for losers, who reveal the costs they are prepared to pay. We discuss various potential advantages of the motivational probe over previous measures, particularly with respect to winners and losers and different times during the interactions.  相似文献

Monthly collections were made of man‐biting female blackflies: Simulium auripellitum Enderlein, S. guianense Wise, S. minusculum Lutz and S. nigrimanum Macquart (Diptera: Simuliidae) from four catching stations in the newly discovered focus of human onchocerciasis at Minaçu (13°35′ S 48°18′ W), 300 km north of Brasília in Goiás State. These provided baseline data on biting habits, population density and seasonal prevalence during the year before completion of the Serra da Mesa hydroelectric dam on the Rio Tocantins near Minaçu, in a project investigating the effect of dam construction on onchocerciasis transmission in the area. All four simuliid species were most abundant during the dry season, and only bit in low numbers (S. auripellitum S.minusculum, S. nigrimanum) or were absent (S. guianense) in the wet season. Simulium minusculum was the predominant species at all catching stations, being particularly abundant by the large River Tocantins. The other three species were mainly associated with smaller rivers. In the dry season, biting rhythms of S. minusculum varied with catching site, while S. nigrimanum showed peaks of activity in early morning and during the afternoon. Experimental infection with Onchocerca volvulus (Leuckart) (Nematoda: Onchocercidae), from a human volunteer, showed that this parasite could develop fully in the four simuliid species, which are all considered to be potential vectors in the area.  相似文献

Circadian rhythms of animals are reset by exposure to light as well as dark; however, although the parameters of photic entrainment are well characterized, the phase-shifting actions of dark pulses are poorly understood. Here, we determined the tonic and phasic effects of short (0.25 h), moderate (3 h), and long (6-9 h) duration dark pulses on the wheel-running rhythms of hamsters in constant light. Moderate- and long-duration dark pulses phase dependently reset behavioral rhythms, and the magnitude of these phase shifts increased as a function of the duration of the dark pulse. In contrast, the 0.25-h dark pulses failed to evoke consistent effects at any circadian phase tested. Interestingly, moderate- and long-dark pulses elevated locomotor activity (wheel-running) on the day of treatment. This induced wheel-running was highly correlated with phase shift magnitude when the pulse was given during the subjective day. This, together with the finding that animals pulsed during the subjective day are behaviorally active throughout the pulse, suggests that both locomotor activity and behavioral activation play an important role in the phase-resetting actions of dark pulses. We also found that the robustness of the wheel-running rhythm was weakened, and the amount of wheel-running decreased on the days after exposure to dark pulses; these effects were dependent on pulse duration. In summary, similarly to light, the resetting actions of dark pulses are dependent on both circadian phase and stimulus duration. However, dark pulses appear more complex stimuli, with both photic and nonphotic resetting properties.  相似文献

With limitations imposed by the lack of appendages and elongatemorphology, snakes exhibit a variety of unique ritualistic behaviorsin the contexts of agonistic encounters and courtship and mating.During male combat rituals, actions involve high vertical displaystances (crotaline) to horizontal stances (colubrid) with eithermale attempting to force the other's head down. Superior positionappears to be important during these encounters. Dominant andsubordinate actions and postures are recognized. Courting snakesexhibit a variety of positions and movements, performed primarilyby the male, which appear to passify the female and induce herreceptivity. Actions involved may be chin rubbing, body jerksor caudocephalic waves, cephalocaudal waves, tail searching,pushing, nudging, biting, and tail raising. Sequences and phasesof the actions used vary with the species. Significant featuresof these behaviors are the different actions taking place separatelyor simultaneously along the elongate cylindrical snake. The study of host-parasite relationships involving vector-borne parasites requires understanding interactions between parasites and vectors. The capacity of haemosporidians to infect insects has clear evolutionary consequences for the transmission of diseases. Here, we investigated (i) the associations between blood parasites, biting midges and birds and (ii) the potential specificity between biting midge and haemosporidian haplotypes. A total of 629 parous biting midges Culicoides and 224 wild birds (belonging to seven species) from a locality of central Spain were individually examined for the presence of Haemoproteus and Plasmodium parasites by sequencing a fragment of cytochrome B. Biting midges were identified morphologically and characterized on the basis of a fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase (COI) gene. Overall, 12 Haemoproteus and three Plasmodium haplotypes were isolated and sequenced. Among them, 10 haplotypes were exclusively isolated from biting midges, three haplotypes only from birds and two haplotypes from both biting midges and birds. Biting midge haplotypes showed both specific and generalist relationships with Haemoproteus haplotypes but only generalist relationships with Plasmodium haplotypes. Several C. festivipennis and C. kibunesis haplotypes established significant coevolutionary links with Haemoproteus haplotypes. These results shed light on the specificity of interactions between vectors and blood parasites.  相似文献

variety of non-conventional treatments was applied to biting louse ( Bovicola ovis ) infested sheep in order to evaluate ways in which farmers could control the louse infestations and still maintain Organic Production Standards.
In one trial, louse scores of sheep shorn but kept dry or wetted by water alone or with water plus detergent were compared with unshorn sheep treated similarly. Shearing alone accounted for a 35.7–66.3% reduction in mean louse scores. Wetting alone either with water or with water and added detergent accounted for a 26.9–35.3% reduction in mean louse scores. The combined effects on mean louse scores of shearing and wetting, as opposed to shearing alone, were statistically significant on two of the three farms at 32–35 days post-treatment. The effects persisted for the duration of the trial (between 48 and 52 days), at which point shearing and wetting with detergent provided 95.3–99.6% control of lice. In a second trial, a range of insecticidal substances considered acceptable by Organic Production Standards, azadirachtin (neem), pyrethrum, soap, was applied to louse-infested sheep and their efficacy compared with that of a commercial formulation of cypermethrin. The sheep treated with azadirachtin and pyrethrum had significantly fewer lice than either the control or soap treated sheep over the 48 days of the trial. Neither azadirachtin nor pyrethrum were significantly less effective than cypermethrin. Control (reduction in louse score) of 85.0–100% was achieved over the period of the trial.
It is concluded that most of the non-conventional treatments evaluated had a useful and cost-effective role to play in reducing louse numbers on sheep for at least 40–50 days. The lack of persistence compared with that obtained with conventional insecticides was the only apparent drawback.  相似文献

Studies have demonstrated that electronic mosquito repellers are useless and that some of them could even increase the attraction of mosquitoes. While testing some electronic repellers, we noted that they also promoted an increase in biting rates. The present work has evaluated three commercial devices and a computer program working on five different sound frequencies. In a test chamber, the number of Aedes aegypti L. bite attempts was computed during four cycles of 3 min each by alternately turning the devices off and on. The mosquito biting rates for five sound frequencies (ranging from 9.6 kHz to 18.2 kHz) initially demonstrated a significant increase (ranging from around 20% to 50%), which decreased from 8.3% to 25.1% when the repellers were turned off. The biting rate significantly increased at 11.8 kHz (33.7%) when the device was turned on again. The danger of using electronic repellers and the role of sound frequencies stimulating mosquito biting are discussed.  相似文献

Mastication, which includes biting, is of great importance not only for the intake of food but also for the mental, physical and physiological functioning of the body. For example, biting suppresses the stress response. Although biting and nitric oxide (NO) appear to modulate brain dynamics during stress, the underlying mechanisms have not been elucidated. In this study, we examined the effect of biting during restraint stress on NO levels in the rat hypothalamus. To this end, we used NO-selective electrodes that were calibrated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. We implanted the electrodes and probes for perfusion of solutions into the brain of rats, near the hypothalamus. Saline containing 10 mM N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), which is one of the most commonly used inhibitors of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), was employed as the perfusate. L-NAME prevented increases in NO levels in the rat hypothalamus that were induced by restraint stress and biting. Hypothalamic NO levels in rats under restraint stress for 180 min were increased above levels observed in unrestrained control rats. The increase in hypothalamic NO (from 2.123 muM to 4.760 muM) during restraint stress was reduced after biting for 30 min. The decay rate of NO levels after biting was -0.584 pA/min (-0.071 muM/min). We conclude that: (i) it is possible to evaluate NO levels in vivo in rat brain; (ii) NO levels are increased by restraint stress; and (iii) this increase is prevented by biting behavior.  相似文献

The Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island, SC, is surrounded by tidal salt marshes, which are breeding habitats for many pestiferous biting flies. Knowledge of biting fly behavior patterns is needed to develop effective pest management strategies in urban areas adjacent to salt marshes. We measured biting midge (Ceratopogonidae) and mosquito (Culicidae) seasonal abundance and diel activity patterns on Parris Island using CO2‐baited suction traps from November 2001 – November 2004. Of the three biting midge species collected, Culicoides furens was most abundant (86.2% of total) and was present in high numbers from late March to November. Culicoides hollensis (12.0% of total) was present during spring and fall but absent in summer and winter; and Culicoides melleus (1.7% of total) was present in spring through fall but absent in winter. Abundance of C. furens had a positive linear correlation with air temperature and rainfall. There were nonlinear correlations between air temperature and C. hollensis and C. melleus numbers, which were most abundant at moderate temperatures. Of 18 mosquito species collected, the most abundant were Aedes taeniorhynchus (42.7% of total), Aedes sollicitans (26.3% of total), Culex salinarius (15.6% of total), Culex quinquefasciatus (7.3% of total), and Aedes vexans (5.7% of total); other species comprised <5% of collections. Aedes taeniorhynchus numbers were positively correlated with temperature and rainfall, and Cx. salinarius was correlated with soil moisture. Activity of most biting midges and mosquitoes were highest the first two hours following sunset. Species of biting flies were present in all months, suggesting that year‐round control measures are necessary to reduce exposure to potential disease vectors and nuisance biting.  相似文献

Tail biting in domestic pigs relates to a range of risk factors, primarily in the pigs’ environment. Preventive tail docking is widely used, and various experimental approaches suggest that docking reduces the risk of tail biting. However, whether the docking length affects the prevalence of tail biting outbreaks is less studied, as is how a shortened tail will affect pigs’ social behaviour. The aim of this study was to investigate how three different tail docking lengths, measured at docking, as well as retained intact tails (Short: 2.9 cm; Medium: 5.7 cm; Long: 7.5 cm; and Undocked) affected tail biting risk and behaviour directed at other finisher pigs with the same docking length treatment. Tail lesions were scored weekly, as was behaviour at pen level after introduction to finisher pens and until a potential outbreak of tail biting or slaughter. Pigs from four commercial herds (258 litters) entered the study. Before the pigs entered the finisher section and data collection started, some pigs were excluded, mainly due to tail biting outbreaks in the weaner section. The risk of a tail biting outbreak differed significantly between treatments (P=0.001), with a lowered risk of a tail biting outbreak in Short pens compared with Undocked (P<0.001) and Medium (P<0.05), and was affected by herd as well (P<0.001). Pens in the Long and Undocked treatments were pooled for the behavioural analysis due to low representation, especially in the Undocked treatment. The probability of tail contacts, where a pig interacted with a pen mate’s tail, differed between docking length treatments and was highest in the Long/Undocked compared with the Short treatment (P<0.01), but docking length did not affect aggressive behaviour. Docking length affected the risk of a tail biting outbreak and the frequency of tail-directed behaviour in our participating herds, of which three reported a high prevalence of tail biting problems. Only the shortest docking length treatment (Short) reduced the tail biting risk, but did not completely prevent tail biting outbreaks.  相似文献

The feeding kinematics, suction and hydraulic jetting capabilities of captive harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) were characterized during controlled feeding trials. Feeding trials were conducted using a feeding apparatus that allowed a choice between biting and suction, but also presented food that could be ingested only by suction. Subambient pressure exerted during suction feeding behaviors was directly measured using pressure transducers. The mean feeding cycle duration for suction-feeding events was significantly shorter (0.15±0.09 s; P<0.01) than biting feeding events (0.18±0.08 s). Subjects feeding in-water used both a suction and a biting feeding mode. Suction was the favored feeding mode (84% of all feeding events) compared to biting, but biting comprised 16% of feeding events. In addition, seals occasionally alternated suction with hydraulic jetting, or used hydraulic jetting independently, to remove fish from the apparatus. Suction and biting feeding modes were kinematically distinct regardless of feeding location (in-water vs. on-land). Suction was characterized by a significantly smaller gape (1.3±0.23 cm; P<0.001) and gape angle (12.9±2.02°), pursing of the rostral lips to form a circular aperture, and pursing of the lateral lips to occlude lateral gape. Biting was characterized by a large gape (3.63±0.21 cm) and gape angle (28.8±1.80°; P<0.001) and lip curling to expose teeth. The maximum subambient pressure recorded was 48.8 kPa. In addition, harbor seals were able to jet water at food items using suprambient pressure, also known as hydraulic jetting. The maximum hydraulic jetting force recorded was 53.9 kPa. Suction and hydraulic jetting where employed 90.5% and 9.5%, respectively, during underwater feeding events. Harbor seals displayed a wide repertoire of behaviorally flexible feeding strategies to ingest fish from the feeding apparatus. Such flexibility of feeding strategies and biomechanics likely forms the basis of their opportunistic, generalized feeding ecology and concomitant breadth of diet.  相似文献

Aggressive encounters between pairs of male mountain dusky salamanders (Desmognathus ochrophaeus) were staged in the laboratory in the absence of any obvious limited resource. We observed aggressive interactions which sometimes escalated to biting. Physical injuries were inflicted during some aggressive encounters; however, the consequences of injury for future fitness are uncertain. Several behaviour patterns used in contests apparently functioned as threat displays, and these sometimes ended contests before they escalated to biting. We could detect no significant influences of three types of asymmetries among males in determining the winners and losers of contests (body size, recent mating experience and familiarity with the testing arena). Three cases of 'homosexual' courtship were observed. Both intermale aggression and intermale courtship may be interpreted as forms of competition for mates.  相似文献

Proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) socioecology was studied at the Natai Lengkuas Station, Tanjung Puting National Park, in Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia. Data on the nature of intergroup interactions were collected on ten one-male groups and two all-male groups using event sampling during follows and also through evening census surveys. Proboscis monkeys form stable one-male groups, with specific groups regularly associating at their sleeping sites (band members). Both intraband and interband high-intensity agonistic displays (slapping, chasing, biting) were rare. Lower intensity agonistic displays (vocalizations, leaping-branch shaking, and erect penis and open-mouth displays) occurred frequently. Temporal avoidance between bands may have been mediated by early morning vocalizations and branch shaking displays by the adult males. Associations between groups may play a role in displacement avoidance and/or predation avoidance.  相似文献

The tail of pigs has been suggested as a welfare indicator as it can provide insight into a pig’s behavioural and emotional states. Tail posture and motion have so far mainly been studied in the context of tail biting behaviour. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between pigs’ natural behaviour and their tail posture and tail motion. This was studied in a free-range farm in which tail biting is absent. In total 214 pigs of different age categories were observed individually (sows, gilts, boars, and 6-month old pigs) or by group (6-month and 1-year old pigs) for their tail posture, tail motion and behaviour, using live observations and videos obtained by drone. Results showed that a fully curled tail occurred most during locomotion (P < 0.001); and an actively hanging tail occurred more during foraging (P < 0.001), excavation (P = 0.006), feeding (P = 0.017), receipt of agonistic behaviour (P = 0.036), and non-agonistic social interactions (P = 0.046). A fully curled tail (P < 0.001) and a half curled tail (P < 0.005) occurred least in the group of sows. Tail motion was infrequent (6.7% of observations), and involved mainly loosely wagging, which occurred more during locomotion (P = 0.006) and non-agonistic social interactions (P = 0.006). A higher temperature-humidity index increased the probability of half curled tails (P < 0.001) and loose wagging (P < 0.001), while reducing the probability of active (P < 0.001) and passive hanging tails (P = 0.013). These results provide insight into tail posture and tail motion in pigs under semi-natural conditions, showing especially that hanging tails are not primarily associated with tail biting, and that the use of tail postures for welfare assessment should be in consideration with the context in which the animals are kept.  相似文献
