This study investigated the roles of cortisol and growth hormone (GH) during a period of fasting in overwintering salmonid fish. Indices of carbohydrate (plasma glucose, liver glycogen), lipid (plasma free fatty acids (FFAs)) and protein metabolism (plasma protein, total plasma amino acids) were determined, together with plasma GH, cortisol and somatolactin (SL) levels at intervals in three groups of rainbow trout (continuously fed; fasted for 9 weeks then fed; fasted for 17 weeks). In fasted fish, a decline in body weight and condition factor was accompanied by reduced plasma glucose and hepatic glycogen and increased plasma FFA. No consistent elevation of plasma GH occurred until after 8 weeks of fasting when plasma GH levels increased ninefold. No changes were observed in plasma total protein and AA until between weeks 13 and 17 when both were reduced significantly. When previously fasted fish resumed feeding, plasma glucose and FFA, and hepatic glycogen levels rapidly returned to control values and weight gain resumed. No significant changes in plasma cortisol levels, related to feeding regime, were evident at any point during the study and there was no evidence that SL played an active role in the response to fasting. The results suggest that overwinter fasting may not represent a significant nutritional stressor to rainbow trout and that energy mobilisation during fasting may be achieved without the involvement of GH, cortisol or SL.  相似文献

The present study was conducted to investigate whether individual rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss can simultaneously anticipate two daily meals, and to evaluate the influence of time-restricted feeding schedules and light-dark (L:D) cycles on the timing of self-feeding activity. Individual rainbow trout were capable of anticipating not only a single meal but also two daily meals scheduled at different times; the duration of anticipation was short and precise. This seems to be the first convincing evidence to show that a single fish can simultaneously anticipate two daily meals. Change in the onset and cessation of light did not affect the duration of food-anticipatory activity, although it led to shift the phases of the light-related self-feeding activity. Moreover, under constant light and ad lib feeding conditions, only one band of rhythmic activity was observed in individual rainbow trout that had previously developed food-anticipatory activity to each of the two daily meals.  相似文献

The effect of feeding the probiotic Kocuria SM1 to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum) on disease resistance was evaluated. Thus, rainbow trout were fed Kocuria SM1 supplemented diets at concentrations of 108 cells g−1 feed for up to four weeks, and then challenged intraperitoneally with Vibrio anguillarum at weekly intervals. A two-week feeding regime led to the maximum reduction in mortalities, i.e. 16%, compared to mortalities of 62, 30 and 22% for one, three and four week feeding regimes, respectively. These compared to 70–90% mortalities of the controls. An enhanced cellular and humoral immune response, notably greater head kidney macrophage phagocytic and peroxidase activities, and higher serum lysozyme and total protein levels were recorded after two weeks of probiotic administration. These results reveal that a two-week feeding regime with Kocuria SM1 leads to higher disease protection in rainbow trout, with protection linked to stimulation of immune parameters.  相似文献

The effect of feeding time (dawn or midnight) on nitrogen excretion and energy expenditure was studied in immature rainbow trout using measurements of respiratory gas exchange. Fish (mean individual weight 70 g) were maintained indoors under natural photoperiod and fed by hand (commercial food pellets) at a rate of 1% weight/day−1. Rates of ammonia and CO2 excretion and O2 uptake were measured every hour. Ammonia excretion increased immediately after feeding in fish fed at midnight, and 2h after feeding in fish fed at dawn. Ammonia excretion and energy supply from protein catabolism, were higher in trout fed at midnight than in those fed at dawn, while total energy expenditure was the same in both groups. The results suggested that trout fed in phase with their natural feeding rhythm use dietary protein more efficiently for growth than do trout fed out of phase with the natural rhythm.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in the gastric evacuation rate ( R ) and gut contents of a wild population of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss feeding on natural prey at four water temperatures (2, 7, 9 and 12° C) were measured. The R and mass of the gut contents increased with water temperature, and prey items changed seasonally. These results suggest that the R of fish feeding on natural food depends primarily on water temperature, with their consumed prey being a secondary factor.  相似文献

1. Specific activity and kinetic constants of trypsin from the pyloric caeca of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were measured. 2. Although one group was fed more than twice as much as the other (1.8 compared to 0.7% body weight per day), there were no significant differences in the weight of the pyloric caeca, specific activity of trypsin, or kinetic constants (apparent Km or Vmax) between the two groups. 3. 1. The effect of high levels of dietary salt up to 12% NaCl on kidney function in freshwater rainbow trout was investigated. 2. Renal response to dietary NaCl load includes increases in urinary flow rate and glomerular filtration rate, together with a slight reduction in ionic reabsorption capacity. 3. The renal salt excretion rate, which was doubled to about 100 microM/kg/hr, in fish fed the high salt diet, is not entirely a consequence of a reduction in tubular ionic reabsorption but also of increased glomerular filtration. 4. Compensatory growth responses of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were studied by examining food intake and growth of individual fish held within groups that were switched between regimes that involved full and restricted feeding. Restricted feeding led to marked interindividual variability in food intake, probably as a result of the establishment of feeding hierarchies. This disparity in food acquisition was reflected in highly heterogeneous growth amongst the fish fed low rations. When fish were transferred from restricted to full rations, they became hyperphagic and displayed high rates of growth. Growth compensation was most marked amongst those fish which had shown the poorest growth during the period of feed restriction. These results suggest that the feeding hierarchies established under feed restriction did not persist, but were rapidly broken down when food became increasingly available, enabling the previously suppressed fish to gain access to food and to display rapid growth.  相似文献

Sexually immature rainbow trout were acclimated to small-volume (1 m3) holding tanks and then exposed to short-term stress to examine the relationship between feeding, stress, plasma ghrelin levels and other plasma stress parameters. Plasma ghrelin levels showed an increase 24 h after a single feed, plasma lactate and glucose levels decreased over the same period and plasma cortisol levels were low and constant. One hour of confinement stress resulted in elevations of plasma cortisol, glucose and lactate and depression of plasma ghrelin levels. In a separate experiment, 2 h of confinement stress also depressed feeding immediately after stress, concomitant with increases in plasma cortisol, lactate and glucose; however, in this case there was no change in plasma ghrelin concentrations. A repeat of the 2-h confinement experiment using fish that had not been acclimated to small-volume holding tanks produced a more marked elevation in plasma cortisol and a stronger suppression of feeding post-stress but in this case also, there was no change in plasma ghrelin levels. The results of this study confirm that feeding in rainbow trout is suppressed by confinement stress although the effect is transitory in this domesticated stock. Similar to that in other fishes, plasma ghrelin levels appear to be modulated by feeding status and may be influenced by stress, suggesting an orexigenic role for ghrelin in rainbow trout.  相似文献

The effect of six different feeding times was tested on feed intake, growth performance, proximate body composition and nutrient retention in the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss . Using a non‐linear regression model, a significant rhythmic pattern over a 24 h period was observed for feed gain ratio and nutrient retention responses to feeding time. Specific growth rate and protein growth rate responses were also rhythmic but the trends were not significant. There was no clear effect of feeding time on feed intake and proximate body composition. The study suggested that feed intake, at least under the experimental conditions encountered, was synchronized to feeding time while some physiological rhythms involved in nutrient metabolism were probably synchronized to photoperiod.  相似文献

We assessed the daily patterns of parameters involved in energy metabolism in plasma and brain of rainbow trout. Where daily rhythms were found, we analyzed the potential influence of feeding. Immature rainbow trout were randomly distributed in 3 groups: fish fed for 7 days, fish fasted for 7 days, and fish fasted for 7 days and refed for 4 days. On sampling day, fish of fed and refed groups were fed at 11.00 h, and all fish were sampled from each treatment group using the following time schedule: 14.00, 18.00, 21.00, 00.00, 04.00, 07.00, 10.00 and 14.00 h. The results obtained from metabolic parameters assessed in plasma and brain can be grouped into three different categories, such as (i) those displaying no 24 h changes in fed fish such as plasma lactate, protein or acetoacetate levels, as well as brain amino acid and protein levels, and lowKm(glucose) hexokinase, and aspartate aminotransferase activities, (ii) those displaying 24 h changes that were apparently dependent on feeding since they disappeared in fasted fish such as the case of plasma cortisol, glucose and triglyceride levels, as well as brain glycogen, glucose, and lactate levels, and pyruvate kinase and hexokinase IV activities, and (iii) those parameters displaying 24 h changes apparently not dependent on feeding such as plasma amino acids, brain acetoacetate levels as well as several enzyme activities measured in brain such as glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and lactate dehydrogenase-oxidase. In general, 24 h changes dependent on feeding indicate an increased use of glucose in brain several hours post-feeding whereas those changes not dependent on feeding were characterized by reduced levels/activity at the night period suggesting a metabolic depression in brain during darkness.  相似文献

Three groups of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss , (initial weight 40 g) were fed one of three rations (low, medium or high) for 73 days. Consumption by individual fish within the three ration groups was measured on four occasions (days 27, 55, 64 and 72) using radiography. Food intake by individual fish varied between days and this variability was expressed using the coefficient of variation (CV). Dominant fish within each ration group were defined as individuals with the greater share of the group meal and these fish had low CVs for food intake indicating relatively little variation in daily consumption. By contrast, the fish which had consumed a low mean proportion of the group meal displayed high CVs for food intake, indicating considerable variability in the sizes of individual meals consumed by these fish. As group ration increased, the range of meal sizes and individual CVs in daily feeding decreased, suggesting that the strength of the feeding hierarchy and the variability in individual consumption decreased as food availability increased. It is suggested that radiography can be used to assess social relationships within groups of fish allowing the assessment of feeding hierarchies in larger groups of fish than would be possible by observational techniques.  相似文献

Rainbow trout peritoneal macrophages were stimulated in vitro using Concanavalin A (Con A) and in vivo using formalin-killed Aeromonas salmonicida in Freund's incomplete adjuvant (FIA). Whether these cells had been activated was determined by the measurements of oxygen anions (NBT reduction), H2O2 production (oxidation of phenol red), RNA synthesis (3H-uridine incorporation), acid phosphatase activity and bactericidal activity.
In vitro -stimulated macrophages showed an increased NBT reduction and 3H-uridine incorporation over a range of Con A concentrations, compared with untreated control macrophages, but no detectable increases in H2O2 production or bactericidal activity were observed. On the other hand, in vivo -stimulated peritoneal cells showed increases in all the assays compared with FIA-elicited control cells, and were considered to have been activated.  相似文献

1. A pepsinogen, Ia on the basis of its electrophoretic mobility, from rainbow trout stomach, has an optimum pH near 2 for activation. 2. The cognate pepsin is denatured at pH values above 7, in contrast to the zymogen, which is slightly more alkali-stable. It has an optimum pH of 3 for proteolysis of denatured hemoglobin. 3. The intrinsic reactivity of the zymogen and pepsin (rates of activation and of proteolysis, respectively) are quite high, but as they operate at the environmental temperature of the fish, are remarkably similar to rates of activation and proteolysis by mammalian pepsinogens and pepsins.  相似文献

Rainbow trout trained to operate a demand feeder showed a marked preference for a diet flavoured with a synthetic mixture of chemicals over the unfavoured diet. The gustatory feeding stimulant activity resided in the amino acid fraction and was stereospeciflc for the L-forms. Certain mixtures of L-amino acids were stimulatory, while the individual components of the mixtures were inactive or repellent.  相似文献
