Predicting the effects of global climate change on species interactions has remained difficult because there is a spatiotemporal mismatch between regional climate models and microclimates experienced by organisms. We evaluated resource selection in a predominant ectothermic predator using a modeling approach that permitted us to assess the importance of habitat structure and local real‐time air temperatures within the same modeling framework. We radio‐tracked 53 western ratsnakes ( Pantherophis obsoletus) from 2010 to 2013 in central Missouri, USA, at study sites where this species has previously been linked to prey population demographics. We used Bayesian discrete choice models within an information theoretic framework to evaluate the seasonal effects of fine‐scale vegetation structure and thermal conditions on ratsnake resource selection. Ratsnake resource selection was influenced most by canopy cover, canopy cover heterogeneity, understory cover, and air temperature heterogeneity. Ratsnakes generally preferred habitats with greater canopy heterogeneity early in the active season, and greater temperature heterogeneity later in the season. This seasonal shift potentially reflects differences in resource requirements and thermoregulation behavior. Predicted patterns of space use indicate that ratsnakes preferentially selected open habitats in spring and early summer and forest–field edges throughout the active season. Our results show that downscaled temperature models can be used to enhance our understanding of animal resource selection at scales that can be addressed by managers. We suggest that conservation of snakes or their prey in a changing climate will require consideration of fine‐scale interactions between local air temperatures and habitat structure. 相似文献

Temperature imposes significant constraints on ectothermic animals, and these organisms have evolved numerous adaptations to respond to these constraints. While the impacts of temperature on the physiology of ectotherms have been extensively studied, there are currently no frameworks available that outline the multiple and often simultaneous pathways by which temperature can affect behaviour. Drawing from the literature on insects, we propose a unified framework that should apply to all ectothermic animals, generalizing temperature's behavioural effects into: (1) kinetic effects, resulting from temperature's bottom‐up constraining influence on metabolism and neurophysiology over a range of timescales (from short to long term), and (2) integrated effects, where the top‐down integration of thermal information intentionally initiates or modifies a behaviour (behavioural thermoregulation, thermal orientation, thermosensory behavioural adjustments). We discuss the difficulty in distinguishing adaptive behavioural changes from constraints when observing animals' behavioural responses to temperature. We then propose two complementary approaches to distinguish adaptations from constraints, and categorize behaviours according to our framework: ( i) ‘kinetic null modelling’ of temperature's effects on behaviour; and ( ii) behavioural ecology experiments using temperature‐insensitive mutants. Species delimitation is complicated where morphological variation is continuous or poorly subdivided, but for taxonomic convenience it is common practice to separate and name geographical groups to capture this variation. DNA-based approaches may be used to test if these groups in fact represent historically divided, discrete species entities. The Cicindela hybrida complex (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) is an assemblage of up to seven morphologically recognized species and 15 subspecies with wide distribution in the Palaearctic region. We sequenced a discontinuous segment of 1899 bp of mtDNA including three regions (coxI, rrnL+trnL2+nad1, cob) for a total of 99 specimens from 36 sampling localities across Europe, revealing 48 haplotypes. Four major clades could be identified corresponding to geographical groups from central Iberia, Ukraine, central Europe, and a band from the Atlantic Iberian coast to northern Europe. Taking into account further subdivisions within these clades, four of the six named species included in the analysis were recognizable by applying various procedures for species delimitation. Age estimates from calibrated molecular clocks date the diversification of the hybrida group within the past 2 million years (Myr), and the separation of the northern clade within 0.4 Myr. Nested clade analysis revealed the rapid range expansion of the northern group consistent with postglacial dispersal, but we did not find support for specific source population(s) in the postulated southern refugia. The evolutionary framework based on mtDNA sequences is shown to identify species entities as discrete clusters of closely related sequences and provides an objective system for delineating and recognizing hierarchically structured groups. In the case of the C. hybrida complex, these groups largely coincided with those established from morphology. The study adds further support to the utility of mtDNA-based sequence profiles (the 'DNA taxonomy') as a rapid and objective synthesis of evolutionary diversity and as reference system for communication. 相似文献

不同植物种子依靠不同的方式实现扩散,啮齿动物对林木种子搬运后在取食点微生境和贮藏方式的选择存在偏好,研究其贮藏行为与微生境的关系是探究幼苗建成的关键。在秦岭中段火地塘林区,采用标签标记法,以锐齿槲栎、华山松和油松种子为材料,探究了小型啮齿动物对松栎混交林建群种种子扩散过程的影响。结果表明:1)油松种子原地取食率显著高于锐齿槲栎和华山松种子,且啮齿动物更倾向于搬运后取食(60%)和埋藏(4.33%)华山松种子,搬运后取食距离也为华山松最大(2.49 m);锐齿槲栎小种子被搬运后埋藏的距离最大(4.92 m)。2)除华山松种子外,其他类型种子被搬运后单个取食的比例均在85%以上;油松种子不存在埋藏点,而其他类型种子90%以上均以单个形式被埋藏。3)大部分种子被啮齿动物搬运后选择在裸地丢弃;锐齿槲栎大种子(87.5%)、小种子(78.57%)和华山松种子(53.33%)较大比例被啮齿动物埋藏在灌丛下方,埋藏在裸地的种子较少。4)大部分种子在灌丛下方被取食,仅华山松种子被啮齿动物搬运到洞穴取食;除油松种子被大量原地取食外,其他类型种子被搬运到取食点的种子比例基本呈现由微生境植被复杂到简单(灌丛—草丛—灌丛边缘—裸地)而逐渐减小的趋势。种子的营养价值及取食和搬运过程中啮齿动物付出的成本是影响种子命运的关键性因子,且啮齿动物对种子埋藏和取食地点的微生境存在较明显的选择性。 相似文献

A young of the year female white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, was tagged with a pop-up satellite archival tag off Southern California in early June of 2000. The tag was recovered after 28 days, and records of temperature, depth and light intensity were extracted. Depth and temperature records indicate a number of interesting behaviors, including a strong diurnal pattern. At night the shark remained in the top 50 m, often making shallow repetitive vertical excursions. Most dives below the mixed layer were observed during the day, 91% of which occurred from 05:00 to 21:00 h, with depths extending to 240 m. Many of the dives exhibited secondary vertical movements that were consistent with the shark swimming at the bottom (at depths from 9 to 165 m) where it was most likely foraging. The white shark experienced dramatic and rapid changes in temperature, and demonstrated a considerable tolerance for cold waters. Temperatures ranged from 9°C to 22°C, and although 89% of the total time was spent in waters 16–22°C, on some days the small shark spent as much as 32% of the time in 12°C waters. The deep dives into cold waters separate the white sharks from mako sharks, which share the California Bight nursery ground but appear to remain primarily in the mixed layer and thermocline. Movement information (derived from light-based geolocation, bottom depths and sea surface temperatures) indicated that the white shark spent the 28 days in the Southern California Bight, possibly moving as far south as San Diego, California. While the abundance and diversity of prey, warm water and separation from adults make this region an ideal nursery ground, the potential for interaction with the local fisheries should be examined. 相似文献

Understanding the responses of foragers to patchy distributionsof resources has formed a fundamental challenge in behavioralecology. Two currencies have been used to assess the patch preferencesof herbivoresintake rate maximization and risk sensitivity.We wished to understand if small mammalian foragers, collaredlemmings ( Dichrostonyx groenlandicus), choose patches to maximizefood intake rate or to reduce risk of starvation in "variable"environments. Moreover, we examined the possibility that maximizingintake rate depends on the spatial scale of patchiness. We designedan experiment offering two alternative patches of food, varyingthe predictability of food rewards and the "potential intakerate" at different spatial scales. Collared lemmings did notconsistently select patches that maximized their intake rateat either scale studied. Instead, they chose patches offeringthe least variation in food reward over the course of the experiment.Collared lemmings used prior knowledge gained from previousforaging bouts to assess food variability. We interpret theseresults as evidence for risk-averse foraging strategies, whichare predicted for continuous foragers aiming to minimize riskof starvation. 相似文献

Habitat structure is important to consider in all ecological studies considering the relationships between animals and their environment. Habitat structure can be studied at different scales, from landscape to microhabitat. I studied here the response of two endemic terrestrial birds living in the dry forest of Madagascar. These birds belong to the genus Coua. The study is made at the microhabitat scale in a gallery forest, which has been logged selectively in order to limit the degradation of the forest. Selective logging is promoted to be respectful of the environment by allowing us to exploit the forest without destroying it and the wildlife encountered here. At the microhabitat scale, I underline that selective logging does not affect the Coquerel's coua, which can exploit new microhabitats and increase its density. On the other hand, the giant coua was affected by the restriction of optimal microhabitats for foraging. This species could be adapted to the new habitat by modifying its favourite foraging sites, but by decreasing also the population density. This species was affected by forest degradation, even considered as not destroying. At last, I considered how Coquerel's coua could be used as umbrella species for the endangered mesite. 相似文献

Abstract. - 1 Females of the aphid hyperparasitoid Dendrocerus carpenteri (Curtis) search successfully for hosts during both day and night. Oviposition numbers per host patch did not differ significantly between day and night.
- 2 D.carpenteri females also displayed a nocturnal flight activity, showing that they are not only capable of searching on a given host plant but also of dispersing between host plants.
- 3 Nocturnal oviposition activity was mainly influenced by egg load. Females with a high egg load laid more eggs at night than females with a comparatively low egg load. Thus, D.carpenteri females may use nocturnal foraging to compensate for the lack of oviposition opportunities during day.
- 4 D.carpenteri females which foraged continuously for hosts both day and night (= for 24 h per day) benefitted from an 1.4-fold increase in lifetime reproductive success when compared to females which foraged only by day (= for 16 h per day).
- 5 The benefit of night foraging for this species is a significantly increased reproductive success.

The device measures temperature differences across the sample and across a polyethylene plate with known conductivity which is placed in series with the sample. 3. 3. The conductivity of the polyethylene was determined from the steady state temperature difference and heat flux through the wall of a polyethylene pipe with a central heat source. 4. 4. The accuracy of the device is ±4.0%. 5. 5. The thermal conductivity of harp seal (Phoca groenlandica) and minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) blubber, as determined by use of this device, is very close to previously reported values.

The response of oxygen consumption (VO2), thermal conductance (Cd and Cmin, body temperature (Tb), and evaporative water loss (EWL) of Tatera leucogaster and Desmodillus auricularis were measured over the range of ambient temperatures (Ta) from 5–35°C. 2. 2. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) of T. leucogaster was 0.841 ± 0.049 ml O2 g−1 h−1 and lower than predicted, while that of D. auricularis was similar to the expected value (1.220 ± 0.058 ml O2 g−1 h−1). D. auricularis had a high, narrow thermoneutral zone (TNZ) typical of nocturnal, xerophilic, burrowing rodents. 3. 3. D. auricularis and T. leucogaster regulated Tb over the range Ta = 5–35°C and kept EWL and dry thermal conductance at a minimum below the TNZ. However, the EWL of T. leucogaster increased rapidly above Ta = 30°C. 4. 4. After comparison with data from other species, it was concluded that there is an optimum size for xeric, nocturnal, burrowing rodents.

The concept of final preferendum is reexamined in light of data concerning acclimation in a cyclic thermal regime. Because of Shuttling behavior to temperatures above and below the mean preferendum, and because of faster acclimation upward than downward, which result in acclimation to a temperature exceeding the mean of the cycle, a fish may finally gravitate to a preferendum which does not equal acclimation temperature. It is suggested that a distinction be made between the crossover-point preferendum, where preference and acclimation are equal, and the ultimate preferendum to which a fish will ultimately gravitate. 相似文献

1. The interface between thermal biology and foraging mode has attracted little scientific attention, but may be crucially important to the biology of ectothermic predators. Slip & Shine (1988c) suggested that the ability of large heavy-bodied snakes to ambush nocturnally active mammals relied on the snakes' control of cooling rates through their thermal inertia (via body size and postural adjustments) and microhabitat selection. 2. We tested assumptions underlying this hypothesis, using Diamond Pythons ( Morelia s . spilota ) from southeastern New South Wales. Our laboratory studies confirmed that larger body sizes and coiled postures significantly retarded cooling rates, and that body temperature affected the snakes' ability to detect potential prey items. 3. The magnitude of these effects on cooling rates was great enough to extend the time period substantially over which an adult Diamond Python, lying in ambush in a suitable microhabitat, would be able to detect and capture nocturnally active prey. For example, the times taken for pythons to reach thermal equilibration under our experimental conditions (cooling from 33 to 12°C) were <1h for hatchling pythons regardless of posture, 1 h for outstretched juveniles, 2 h for coiled juveniles and outstretched adults, and almost 8 h for coiled adults. 4. The high rates of cooling of juvenile pythons, even when they are tightly coiled, may force them to rely upon diurnally active prey rather than crepuscular or nocturnal species. 相似文献
