The mussel genus Xenostrobus comprises eight named extant species from the Indo-West Pacific, including Xenostrobus inconstans, Xenostrobus pulex and Xenostrobus securis from Australia, the latter two also occurring in New Zealand. Xenostrobus species are predominantly restricted to estuaries or sheltered marine habitats although X. pulex inhabits the rocky intertidal on open coasts. Xenostrobus has recently been suggested to be congeneric with the freshwater invasive species Limnoperna fortunei. Xenostrobus securis is itself invasive in the Far East and Europe. This study employed DNA sequences from cytochrome c oxidase (COI), the D1 expansion region of 28S rRNA and the internal transcribed spacers of the ribosomal cistrons to investigate species relationships and habitat transitions in Australasian Xenostrobus. It is unlikely that Xenostrobus and Limnoperna are congeneric as their COI sequences are very different. There was unexpected complexity in defining Xenostrobus species. Xenostrobus pulex from New Zealand is probably a distinct species to the Australian taxon of that name with the name X. neozelanicus available for that taxon. Xenostrobus inconstans and Australian X. pulex were not reciprocally monophyletic in COI analyses. The phylogeography of the COI haplotypes of X. securis suggests that it may be a cryptic species complex, although this possibility could not be confirmed by sequences of the other genes.  相似文献

We investigated the factors controlling the relative abundancesof two Daphnia species, D.pulex and D.laevis, in a small Wisconsinpond. D.pulex was the dominant Daphnia species in fall 1977and summer-fall 1978; D.laevis was the only Daphnia speciespresent in summer 1979. The abundance of D.laevis was positivelycorrelated with the abundance of the notonectid, Buenoa confusa.In predation trials, notonectides exhibited a distinct preferencefor D.pulex over similarly-sized D.laevis, but Chaoborus larvaefed at similar rates on both Daphnia species. Behavioral observationsrevealed that Buenoa adults were much less efficient at capturingD.laevis than D.pulex. Quantitative results of these predationtrials were combined with estimates of predator and prey densityand distribution to evaluate the effect of predation on thedaphnid populations. The effect of predation varied throughtime and microhabitat, and only infrequently could predationaccount for total prey mortality. D.laevis was most abundantat times and in places where Buenoa predation was most intense.Competition experiments illustrated the competitive superiorityof D.pulex over D.laevis. D.pulex was able to competitivelyexclude D.laevis in long term experiments, and D.pulex's fecunditywas higher than that of D.laevis in shorter experiments. Inlong-term experiments, Chaoborus larvae at natural densitieswere able to keep both Daphnia species at low, constant levelsand neither species clearly dominated when Chaoborus was present.The relative abundances of D.pulex and D.laevis were controlledby a complex of biotic and abiotic factors. Pond depth and predatordensity determined the intensity of predation on daphnid populations.When notonectid predation was intense, D.laevis dominated; whenthe intensity of predation by notonectids was low, D.pulex dominateddue to its superior competitive abilities. The life cycle of the trochid snail Diloma suavis (Philippi, 1849),was studied on an intertidal rocky shore at Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture,where two mytilid bivalves, Septifer virgatus (Wiegmann) andHormomya mutabilis (Gould), formed vertically contiguous musselbeds in the upper-middle and lower zones, respectively. At lowtide in April, the snail density increased with decreasing shoreheight and was greatest at the middle level of the H. mutabilisbed. Then, the density decreased towards the lower littoralfringe. Newly settled juveniles smaller than 2 mm in shell heightappeared abundantly in late summer and autumn within algal turfon the lower shore. As snails grew larger than 2 mm, they appearedwithin the gaps of the H. mutabilis bed and the S. virgatusbed. They increased in size monotonically towards the next summer,but rate of growth in shell height tended to be great in autumnand small in winter. Seasonal change in the density of snailsfound within the gaps of the mussel beds was remarkable during athree year period, increasing from autumn to winter and then decreasingtowards next summer. Reproduction occurred in summer, and adultsnails disappeared by September. It is thus suggested that this specieshas a one year lifespan and shows a habitat shift from algal turfto the gaps of the mussel beds with growth. We tested the prey preference of Chaoborus sp. on Daphnia pulexwith different defensive morphologies. The protective functionof inducible morphological defences, such as neck spine andlonger tail spine, was evaluated Second instar D.pulex individualsof two clones differing in their strength of neck spine inductionwere offered as prey to both Chaoborus obscuripes and Chaoborusflavicans. We used logistic regression analysis to evaluatethe effect of morphometry on the vulnerability of Daphnia. Thepresence of a neck spine and increased total length protectedD.pulex from Chaoborus predation. However, individuals witha longer tail spine were more vulnerable to Chaoborus predationChaoborus obscuripes was able to eat daphnids with a neck spinedue to the larger gape size of this chaoborid. Introduction of sculpins into a stream previously devoid of these predators significantly reduced drift rate of Gammarus pulex. The drift of insect larvae was not affected. High amounts of exudates after implantation of sculpins were probably responsible for the low number of drifting G. pulex specimens. Laboratory experiments confirmed reduced locomotory activity of G. pulex when exposed to caged sculpins, an observation that excludes reduced drift activity as a result only of predation.The average size of drifting G. pulex specimens was larger during the night than during the day. This result is in accordance with the hypothesis that large individuals should, in relation to small ones, turn nocturnal because of greater predation risk during daytime. Presence of sculpins did not alter the size composition of drifting G. pulex.  相似文献

Cellana grata is a high-zoned, exposed-shore limpet with a lifespanof 3 years. Patclloida pygmaeais a low-zoned, sheltered-shorelimpet with a lifespan of I year. C. grata migrates up-shorein winter, but occurs lower on the shore in summer. This migrationis synchronized with variations in algal availability high onthe shore; such variations are, however, themselves relatedto seasonal changes in wave height. P. pygmaea is restrictedto the low shore, year round. The movements upwards in winterand downwards in summer are still evident. Algal species richnessincreased from September to reach a peak between December andMarch, and to abruptly diminish between May and June. The encrustingalgae Brachytrichia maculans, Hildenbrandia prototypus, Lithothamnionsp. and Ralfsia vcrrucosa were present year round. The timingof juvenile recruitment of C. grata and P. pygmaea was fromOctober to July and February to October, respectively. Temperaturemay be important in enhancing juvenile survival by affectingthe seasonal pattern of algal occurrence on the shore. Seasonalfluctuations in the rate of growth were recorded for both specieswith the time of fastest growth of C. grata and P. pygmaea occurringbetween October and March and September and February, respectively.Mortality of both species occurred mainly in summer. On a sandy beach at Shoal Bay in Princess Royal Harbour, Albany,southwestern Western Australia, lives a small muricid gastropodthat feeds virtually monotonically on the overwhelmingly dominantresident bivalve Katelysia scalarina. Lepsiella paivae livesburied in the sand and attacks its prey within it. Because ofits small size (<13 mm shell height), bivalve prey isalso small and this study demonstrates a preference for K. scalarinaof 5 mm shell length, i.e. juveniles. Laboratory experimentsalso suggested a possible preference for attack of the rightvalve. Lepsiella paivae can and does, however, attack largerprey (up to 15 mm shell length), but cannot consume themcompletely. A second visit to Princess Royal Harbour in theAustral winter, when there was no juvenile K. scalarina present,showed L. paivae to be attacking at the sand surface, also bydrilling, the small (<4 mm) gastropod Hydrococcus brazieri(Hydrococcidae). SEM studies of experimentally determined drillholes of L. paivae show them to be of variable form, some straightsided, others bevelled (like a naticid) and <500 µmin diameter. On this sheltered Southern Ocean beach, therefore,L. paivae has specialized to attack juvenile bivalves by burrowingafter them. Juveniles of the green-lipped mussel Perna viridis (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) were exposed to either chemical cues of damaged conspecifics or predator, including the swimming crab Thalamita danae and the muricid gastropod Thais clavigera. Byssus production was monitored for 48?h but the highest production rate occurred in the first 6?h. Longer and thicker byssal threads with a larger total volume were produced by P. viridis exposed to damaged conspecifics and predators as compared with the control. Numbers of individuals which shed stalks during the experiment varied significantly from 0 to 50%, and with a significantly higher value obtained for the control. Results indicated that byssus production is a plastic response which could be induced by exposure to chemical signals from predators and damaged conspecifics, the latter producing the largest response. Firmer byssal attachment not only reduces predation risk but also non-predation mortality by securing an animal more effectively to its habitat.  相似文献

Two mussels, Choromytilus meridionalis (Krauss) and Aulacomyaater, (Molina) were used as indicators of biotic factors thatapparently result in radically different sublittoral communitiesat two closely situated islands on the South African west coast.Specimens of both species were attached to submerged plates,which were either unprotected or protected from predation bycages. C. meridionalis grew faster and tolerated silting andsmothering better than A. ater. At Malgas Island adults of C.meridionalis are completely absent and those of A. ater scarcedue to intense predation by rock-lobsters. When protected againstpredation, growth of both species was significantly faster andsurvivership higher at Malgas than at Marcus Island, where C.meridionalis is abundant but A. ater absent. When the musselswere unprotected at Malgas, they were eaten in a few hours.At Marcus Island where rock-lobsters are virtually absent, cagedmussels grow faster than unprotected individuals and survivedlonger. Drilling whelks (mostly Nucella squamosa (Lamarck))were major predators at Marcus. Relative intensity of rock-lobsterpredation and competition between the mussels appear to controlthe structure and diversity of the sublittoral communities atthese sites, rather than physical factors. Variability of predation intensity is an important cause of spatial differences of community structure and organization in the intertidal rocky shore. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the within- and between-patch variability of the effects of different types of predators (small invertebrates and birds) on Mytilus trossulus Gould, which occupies an intermediate position in the competitive hierarchy among sessile organisms in disturbance patches within a California mussel (Mytilus californianus Conrad) bed community on the central Oregon Coast. Predation by birds did not significantly affect the mortality of M. trossulus. On the contrary, predation by small invertebrate whelks (Nucella spp.) had a significant effect on M. trossulus mortality. Predation by whelks also caused between- and within-patch variability of mortality of M. trossulus. Within patches, M. trossulus mortality at patch margins was significantly higher than at patch centers only when invertebrate predators were present. Wave exposure did not cause between-patch variability of predation intensity. Between-and within-patch variability of predation intensity may be caused by the variability of supply of whelks from the surrounding mussel mat. The movement of predators between patches and surrounding matrices may play an important role in the patch dynamics of these communities.  相似文献

Hexaplex trunculus (Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most abundant and widespread muricid gastropods in the Northern Adriatic Sea, but relatively little is known about the feeding ecology of this predator. We examined the activity of H. trunculus on a sublittoral mussel bed at 24 m depth through in situ time-lapse observations and bulk samples. The camera photographed a 0.25 m2 section of the mussel bed at 6-min intervals for ~ 23 h. Photos were examined frame-by-frame for gastropod movement and activities, especially interactions between H. trunculus and Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819). Our survey indicates high activity-levels of H. trunculus on the sea floor: all gastropods made minor movements, most made major movements, and most left the field of view during the study-interval. On average, individuals remained stationary for only 7.3 h. Two predation attempts on Mytilus involving conspecific competition were documented, and one Hexaplex was consuming a mussel at the onset of the deployment. Additionally, 487 M. galloprovincialis from four diver-taken 0.25 m2 quadrates were measured and examined for traces of marginal chipping and drilling predation. Mytilus from surface samples ranged from 11.1 mm to 95.5 mm in length, and one of the four samples had a significantly different average shell length from the others. 114 H. trunculus were collected and measured. Hexaplex ranged from 22.1 mm to 86.1 mm and the mean shell length did not differ among samples, though they were overwhelmingly medium and large. Predation frequency (the ratio of successfully preyed upon bivalves to the total number of bivalves sampled) is high at the studied site (> 55%), and large gastropods preferred a chipping mode of predation to drilling, supporting earlier laboratory studies showing a preference for M. galloprovincialis and this predation strategy. Prey effectiveness (the ratio of failed predatory attacks to total predatory attacks) is also high (63.8%), and no evidence of a size refuge was found. Feeding in H. trunculus is highly facultative, calling for caution when using drill holes to estimate predation intensities; whenever possible, traces of multiple predation modes should be considered.  相似文献

A well-structured metalimnetic community, composed mainly ofphototrophic purple bacteria, Cryptomonas, and a few speciesof ciliates and rotifers, was regularly found between 1984 and1991 in Lake Cis. These populations appeared during spring,reached high concentrations and remained in the metalimnionuntil winter mixing. We had previously postulated that thesemetalimnetic populations could persist in such high numbersbecause they were free of efficient predation, since the oxygen-sulfideinterface provided a refuge from predation. In September 1992,an abundant Daphnia pulex population developed in the lake whichresulted in drastic changes in the formerly stable community.The presence of D.pulex induced an extreme clear-water phasein the epilimnion and the metalimnetic populations were severelyreduced. Feeding experiments with Cryptomonas and heterotrophicand phototrophic bacteria as food for D.pulex resulted in clearancerates around 0.7 ml individual–1 h–1. The impactwas very high on the microaerophilic populations, whereas theanaerobic populations were least affected, since sulfide limitedthe vertical distribution of D.pulex. We conclude from thisevidence that the metalimnetic populations in previous yeanwere mostly food limited (bottom-up control) and that theirhigh abundances were in great part due to a lack of efficientpredation.  相似文献

1. Data from field surveys, laboratory experiments and computer simulations of community dynamics revealed that a novel interaction among intraguild predation, physiological adaptation and environment may explain the complex distributions of two putatively competing aquatic amphipods. 2. Gammarus pulex and G. tigrinus both thrive in fresh and oligohaline waters in western Europe. However, the native European G. pulex excludes the invading North American G. tigrinus from freshwaters of relatively low conductivity, whereas the reverse occurs at higher conductivities. Additionally, there is much spatio-temporal fluctuation in the patterns of coexistence of these species. 3. Laboratory experiments in The Netherlands and Ireland revealed that mutual predation of moulting individuals occurred frequently between these species. However, predation frequencies were differentially in favour of G. pulex under the ionic conditions to which this species is physiologically adapted (freshwater). On the other hand, predation was not differential under the ionic conditions to which G. tigrinus is physiologically adapted (oligohaline water). 4. A mathematical model, which extends the logistic equation to include mutual intraguild predation, simulated interactions over a range of values of relevant population parameters. This indicated that G. pulex would be excluded when balanced instantaneous rates of mutual predation were combined with the known greater reproductive output of G. tigrinus. However, this reproductive advantage is overcome by any relatively small bias in the instantaneous rate of predation favouring G. pulex, leading to the exclusion of G. tigrinus. This occurs even when the reproductive advantage to G. tigrinus is relatively large. Moreover, the model generated ‘switches’ in species dominance that are determined by the relative values of reproductive rate and mutual predation. The time taken to ‘switch’ may explain the transient periods of apparent coexistence of these species observed in the field. 5. The complex community dynamics of such species may thus be understood in terms of variation in the intensity of species interactions mediated by behavioural, physiological and environmental factors.  相似文献

The association between the green alga Coccomyxa parasitica (Chlorococcales)and the mussel Mytilus edulis chilensis at Goose Green, Falkland Islandsis reported. C. parasitica occurred within the soft tissueswith an overall infestation rate of 16%. The highest levelsof infestation (23%) occurred in individuals from the middleof the main mussel bed, with considerably lower levels of infestation inthe upper and lower regions (<1% and 5% respectively). Noconsistent seasonal pattern in infestation rate was detectedbetween September 1993 and February 1996. C. parasitica wasmost commonly observed in tissues located in the posterior territoryof the host, in areas most directly exposed to light. Tissuesof infested mussels were rather watery and translucent and theadductor muscle appeared weak and stringy. During the summermonths when Falkland mussels are in peak reproductive condition,dry flesh weight of infested mussels was significantly lowerthan non–infected mussels of comparable size suggestingthat infestation by C. parasitica may reduce reproductive output.However it is uncertain whether poor condition of the host isdue to the presence of the parasitic alga or whether C. parasiticainfests only those mussels that are already in poor condition. 1 Present address: 3, St Marys Walk, PO Box 530, Stanley, Falkland Islands (Received 10 June 1998; accepted 8 September 1998)  相似文献

The effect of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) predation on the population dynamics of the water flea,Daphnia pulex, was examined during 1976 and 1977 in Becker Lake, a small, shallow, productive reservoir in northeastern Arizona.Rainbow trout were size-biased feeders, utilizing daphnids which were 1.3 mm in size or larger. Trout predation uponDaphnia pulex occurred mainly during winter and early spring when their numbers were relatively low but their clutch size high, suggesting that trout selectedDaphnia on the basis of brood pigmentation. By far the greatest proportion ofDaphnia mortality was due to nonpredatory sources, since generally less than 6% could be attributed to trout predation.TheD. pulex population exhibited a bimodal seasonal abundance curve which was attributed to ephippial egg production and trout predation during the winter and poor food quality/quantity during the summer.This work was supported in part by the Arizona Department of Game and Fish. Predation by fish has commonly been viewed as a primary driverof spatial and seasonal variation in Daphnia dominance and thesize structure of zooplankton communities. Yet, previous researchsuggests that large Daphnia do not always dominate in the absenceof predation. As alternatives to the planktivory model, numerousmechanisms have been put forth, including the effect of resourcecompetition and its interaction with resource quantity and qualityand abiotic factors (e.g. temperature). Here results are presentedof a field survey of 18 fishless, permanent ponds in southwestMichigan in which spatiotemporal variation in Daphnia pulexabundance and several potential determinants of this variationare explored. Results revealed a large amount of variation inD. pulex incidence and relative biomass, with some ponds exhibitingseasonal losses, some having few or no Daphnia, and some beingdominated by D. pulex for the entire sample period. Redundancyanalysis of zooplankton composition and pond environmental variables(biotic and abiotic) showed no relationship between D. pulexbiomass and measures of Chaoborus abundance, algal resourceproduction, or algal resource quality (including seston C:N:P).Instead, pH and temperature (both of which covaried) showedthe strongest relationship with D. pulex biomass.  相似文献

Umbonium vestiarium (L.) forms virtually the entire diet of3 (possibly 4) species of naticid snails and the starfish Astropectenvappa Mueller annd Troschel on some north Penang sandy shores.Umbonium comprises about 99% of numbers and tissue of macrofauna.Predation totalled some 1.75 Umbonium (ca. 33 mg dry tissue).m-2.day-1 across much of the downshore sand flats rising to 2.3Umbonium (ca. 45 mg). m-2. day-1 near MLWS. Natica maculosaLamarck comprised > 80% of the predators and took 77–94%of the Umbonium eaten. Natica antonii Phillippi alone addedto this toll on the upper reaches of the zone while Polinicesspp and Astropecten appear to have taken 12–14% of thetotal toll of Umbonium near MLWS. Total predation is indicatedat 237–327 kJ.m-2. year-1 across the shore and this representsalmost the total flow of energy from primary consumers to intertidalbenthic predators on such shores and accounts for some 15.6%(lower shore)—20.5% (upper shore) of total Umbonium production. Foraging activity of two mid- to low- shore species of limpet,Patella granulans (Prosobranchia) and Siphonaria concinna (Pulmonata)from an exposed shore on the Eastern Cape coast of South Africawas monitored. In both species, activity was compared duringspring and neap tides and, in P. granularis between summer andwinter. Rhythms of activity of the two species were similar,with foraging excursions being mainly associated with nocturnallow tide times, although some P. granularis foraged during daytimelow tides. It is suggested that foraging excursions in P. granularisare triggered by wave action. Both species foraged further onspring tides than on neap tides and this is suggested to bea result of the limited time limpets have to forage. P. granulariswas also found to forage further during summer when comparedto winter and the possibility that seasonal micro-algal productivityinfluences foraging distances in limpets is discussed. The foraging activity of both species could be divided into3 distinct phases, a relatively rapid outward phase, a muchslower foraging phase and a rapid homeward phase. Whether ornot these limpets graze throughout an excursion is not known.S. concinna was found to home to a fixed scar, although duringthe experiment some scar-swapping occurred. P. granularis didnot home to a fixed scar but possessed a ‘home range’(approx. 5 cm2) to which it returned after each excursion. Patella granularis was found to move randomly during foraging,whilst S. concinna foraged in a non-random direction -whichtook individuals upshore. No tidal-influence is thought to bepresent in this case and the possibility of a learning componentin the foraging behaviour of certain limpet species in relationto the return to optimal feeding patches is discussed. Although infaunal associates of living reef building coralsindude numerous phyla, initial settlement on the coral hosthas never been described. Experiments described here includedraising the larvae of a common Caribbean coral-boring mussel,Lithophaga bisulcata to observe their behaviour in the presenceof a variety of settlement substrates. On Stephanocoenia michelini,the most common host, larvae moved about the coral surface withimpunity, exploring the surface with the foot. On this coralspecies, competent pedi-veligers were ingested by the coralbut not necessarily digested. Penetration of the coral is initiatedby entering the coelenteron, where metamorphosis will presumablytake place. On species which L. bisulcata rarely inhabits, thelarvae appeared to be stung by nematocysts and withdrew thefoot rapidly from contact with the tissue Habitation of a living coral substrate appeared to be beneficialto the bivalve.
