Humans have increased the availability of nutrients including nitrogen and phosphorus worldwide; therefore, understanding how microbes process nutrients is critical for environmental conservation. We examined nutrient limitation of biofilms colonizing inorganic (fritted glass) and organic (cellulose sponge) substrata in spring, summer, and autumn in three streams in Michigan, USA. Biofilms were enriched with nitrate (NO3 ), phosphate (PO4 3−), ammonium (NH4 +), NO3  + PO4 3−, NH4 + + PO4 3−, or none (control). We quantified biofilm structure and function as chlorophyll a (i.e., primary producer biomass) and community respiration on all substrata. In one stream, we characterized bacterial and fungal communities on cellulose in autumn using clone library sequencing and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis to determine if community structure was linked to nutrient limitation status. Despite oligotrophic conditions, primary producer biomass was infrequently nutrient limited. In contrast, respiration on organic substrata was frequently limited by N + P combinations. We found no difference between biofilm response to NH4 + versus NO3 enrichment, although the response to both N-species was positively related to water column PO4 3− concentrations and temperature. Molecular analysis for fungal community composition suggested no relationship to nutrient limitation, but the dominant members of the bacterial community on cellulose were different on NO3 , PO43, and NO3  + PO4 3− treatments relative to control, NH4 +, and NH4 + + PO4 3− treatments, which matched patterns for biofilm respiration rates from each treatment. Our results show discrete patterns of nutrient limitation dependent upon substratum type and season, and imply changes in bacterial community structure and function may be linked following nutrient enrichment in streams.  相似文献

This study presents the tidal exchange of ammonium, nitrite + nitrate, phosphate and silicate between two salt marshes and adjacent estuarine waters. Marsh nutrient fluxes were evaluated for Pointe-au-Père and Pointe-aux-épinettes salt marshes, both located along the south shore of the lower St. Lawrence Estuary in Rimouski area (QC, Canada). Using nutrients field data, high precision bathymetric records and a hydrodynamic numerical model (MIKE21-NHD) forced with predicted tides, nutrients fluxes were estimated through salt marsh outlet cross-sections at four different periods of the year 2004 (March, May, July and November). Calculated marsh nutrient fluxes are discussed in relation with stream inputs, biotic and abiotic marsh processes and the incidence of sea ice cover. In both marshes, the results show the occurrence of year-round and seaward NH4 + fluxes and landward NO2  + NO3 fluxes (ranging from 9.06 to 30.48 mg N day−1 m−2 and from −32.07 to −9.59 mg N day−1 m−2, respectively) as well as variable PO4 3− and Si(OH)4 fluxes (ranging from −3.73 to 6.34 mg P day−1 m−2 and from −29.19 to 21.91 mg Si day−1 m−2, respectively). These results suggest that NO2  + NO3 input to marshes can be a significant source of NH4 + through dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). This NH4 +, accumulating in marsh sediment rather than being removed through coupled nitrification–denitrification or biological assimilation, is exported toward estuarine waters. From average P and Si tidal fluxes analysis, both salt marshes act as a sink during high productivity period (May and July) and as a source, supplying estuarine water during low productivity period (November and March).  相似文献

We evaluated (1) the longitudinal pattern of stream chemistry and (2) the effects of the riparian zone on this longitudinal pattern for nitrate (NO3 ), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total dissolved iron (Fe). We selected two small watersheds; the “southern watershed” had an extending riparian wetland and the “northern watershed” had a narrow riparian area. Stream NO3 concentrations decreased from the spring to outlet of both watersheds. In the southern watershed, stream DOC concentration decreased from the spring to midstream and then increased to the outlet. Stream Fe concentration in the southern watershed longitudinally increased. On the other hand, the northern watershed exhibited no longitudinal pattern for DOC and Fe concentrations. In both watersheds, while NO3 concentrations in the soil and ground water were lower than those in the stream waters, DOC and Fe concentrations exhibited the opposite patterns. The longitudinal decreases of NO3 concentrations in both streams and increase of stream Fe in the southern watershed mainly resulted from the inflow of the soil and ground water to the stream. The decrease in stream DOC from the spring to midstream in the southern watershed was due to the deep groundwater having low DOC, while the subsequent increase to the surrounding soil and ground water. Moreover, considerations of stream solute flow with soil and ground water chemistry suggested other mechanisms adding NO3 and removing/diluting DOC and Fe, especially for the northern watershed; coexistence of oxidizing and reducing conditions in the riparian zone might control the longitudinal concentration change in the stream water chemistry.  相似文献

The effects of nutrient enrichment on the release of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen (DOC and DON, respectively) from the coral Montipora digitata were investigated in the laboratory. Nitrate (NO3 ) and phosphate (PO4 3−) were supplied to the aquarium to get the final concentrations of 10 and 0.5 μmol l−1, respectively, and the corals were incubated for 8 days. The release rate of DON per unit coral surface area significantly decreased after the nutrient enrichment, while the release rate of DOC was constant. Because the chlorophyll a (chl a) content of zooxanthellae per unit surface area increased, the release rate of DOC significantly decreased when normalized to unit chl a. These results suggested that the incorporation of NO3 and PO4 3− stimulated the synthesis of new cellular components in the coral colonies and consequently, reduced extracellular release of DOC and DON. Actually, significant increase in N and P contents relative to C content was observed in the coral’s tissue after the nutrient enrichment. The present study has concluded that inorganic nutrient enrichment not only affects coral-algal metabolism inside the colony but also affects a microbial community around the coral because the organic matter released from corals functions as energy carrier in the coral reef ecosystem.  相似文献

Suppression of nitrate formation within an exotic conifer plantation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Nitrate-N losses to stream waters and soil inorganic N pools, nitrifying potentials and NO3-N production rates were measured in 2 adjacent watersheds, one used as pasture and the other planted in exotic conifer forest (Pinus radiata D. Don). Estimated NO3-N loss to stream waters draining the pine and pasture watersheds were 0.6kg ha−1 y−1 and 7.6 kg ha−1 y−1 respectively. Ammonium-N pool sizes were not significantly different between soils in the two watersheds but NO3−N pools and nitrifying potentials were always lower in the pine watershed soil samples. Laboratory incubation experiments indicated that suppression of NO3−N formation in pine watershed soils required the presence of live tree roots and was not due to the direct action of allelopathic chemicals on nitrifiers.  相似文献

Although they drain remarkably similar forest types, streams of the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) vary widely in their NO3 concentrations during the growing season. This variation may be caused by differences in the terrestrial systems they drain (for example, varying forest age or composition, hydrology, soil organic matter content, and so on) and/or by differences between the streams themselves (for example, contrasting geomorphology, biotic nitrogen [N] demand, rates of instream nitrogen transformations). We examined interstream variation in N processing by measuring NH4 + and NO3 uptake and estimating nitrification rates for 13 stream reaches in the HBEF during the summers of 1998 and 1999. We modeled nitrification rates using a best-fit model of the downstream change in NO3 concentrations following short-term NH4 + enrichments. Among the surveyed streams, the fraction of NH4 + uptake that was subsequently nitrified varied, and this variation was positively correlated with ambient streamwater NO3 concentrations. We examined whether this variation in instream nitrification rates contributed significantly to the observed variation in NO3 concentrations across streams. In some cases, instream nitrification provided a substantial portion of instream NO3 demand. However, because there was also substantial instream NO3 uptake, the net effect of instream processing was to reduce rather than supplement the total amount of NO3 exported from a watershed. Thus, instream rates of nitrification in conjunction with instream NO3 uptake were too low to account for the wide range of streamwater NO3 . The relationship between streamwater NO3 concentration and rates of instream nitrification may instead be due to a shift in the competitive balance between heterotrophic N uptake and nitrification when external inputs of NO3 are relatively high. The modification of large areas of tropical forest to agricultural uses has consequences for the movement of inorganic nitrogen (N) from land to water. Various biogeochemical pathways in soils and riparian zones can influence the movement and retention of N within watersheds and affect the quantity exported in streams. We used the concentrations of NO3 and NH4 + in different hydrological flowpaths leading from upland soils to streams to investigate inorganic N transformations in adjacent watersheds containing tropical forest and established cattle pasture in the southwestern Brazilian Amazon Basin. High NO3 concentrations in forest soil solution relative to groundwater indicated a large removal of N mostly as NO3 in flowpaths leading from soil to groundwater. Forest groundwater NO3 concentrations were lower than in other Amazon sites where riparian zones have been implicated as important N sinks. Based on water budgets for these watersheds, we estimated that 7.3–10.3 kg N ha−1 y−1 was removed from flowpaths between 20 and 100 cm, and 7.1–10.2 kg N ha−1 y−1 was removed below 100 cm and the top of the groundwater. N removal from vertical flowpaths in forest exceeded previously measured N2O emissions of 3.0 kg N ha−1 y−1 and estimated emissions of NO of 1.4 kg N ha−1 y−1. Potential fates for this large amount of nitrate removal in forest soils include plant uptake, denitrification, and abiotic N retention. Conversion to pasture shifted the system from dominance by processes producing and consuming NO3 to one dominated by NH4 +, presumably the product of lower rates of net N mineralization and net nitrification in pasture compared with forest. In pasture, no hydrological flowpaths contained substantial amounts of NO3 and estimated N removal from soil vertical flowpaths was 0.2 kg N ha−1 y−1 below the depth of 100 cm. This contrasts with the extent to which agricultural sources dominate N inputs to groundwater and stream water in many temperate regions. This could change, however, if pasture agriculture in the tropics shifts toward intensive crop cultivation.  相似文献

Sampling spatial and temporal variation in soil nitrogen availability   总被引:18,自引:0,他引:18
There are few studies in natural ecosystems on how spatial maps of soil attributes change within a growing season. In part, this is due to methodological difficulties associated with sampling the same spatial locations repeatedly over time. We describe the use of ion exchange membrane spikes, a relatively nondestructive way to measure how soil resources at a given point in space fluctuate over time. We used this method to examine spatial patterns of soil ammonium (NH+ 4) and nitrate (NO 3) availability in a mid-successional coastal dune for four periods of time during the growing season. For a single point in time, we also measured soil NH+ 4 and NO 3 concentrations from soil cores collected from the mid-successional dune and from an early and a late successional dune. Soil nitrogen concentrations were low and highly variable in dunes of all ages. Mean NH+ 4 and NO 3 concentrations increased with the age of the dune, whereas coefficients of variation for NH+ 4 and NO 3 concentrations decreased with the age of the dune. Soil NO 3 concentration showed strong spatial structure, but soil NH+ 4 concentration was not spatially structured. Plant-available NH+ 4 and NO 3 showed relatively little spatial structure: only NO 3 availability in the second sampling period had significant patch structure. Spatial maps of NH+ 4 and NO 3 availability changed greatly over time, and there were few significant correlations among soil nitrogen availability at different points in time. NO 3 availability in the second sampling period was highly correlated (r = 0.90) with the initial soil NO 3 concentrations, providing some evidence that patches of plant-available NO 3 may reappear at the same spatial locations at irregular points in time. The effects of macronutrients (NO3 , NH4 + and PO4 3−) on cell growth and triterpenoids production inCentella asiatica cell suspension cultures were analyzed using the Box-Behnken response surface model experimental design. In screening and optimization experiments, PO4 3− as a single factor significantly influenced cell growth where increasing the phosphate level from 0.1 to 2.4 or 2.6 mM, elevated cell growth from 3.9 to 14–16 g/L. The optimum values predicted from the response surface model are 5.05 mM NH4 +, 15.0 mM NO3 and 2.6 mM PO4 3−, yielding 16.0 g/L cell dry weight with 99% fitness to the experimental data. While the NH4 +-NO3 interaction influenced cell growth positively in the optimization experiment, NH4 + and NO3 as single factors; and interactions of NO3 -PO4 3−, NH4 +-PO4 3− and NH4 +-NO3 were all negative in the screening experiment. Cell growth and the final pH level were positively affected by PO4 3−, but negatively affected by NH4 + and NH4 +-PO4 3− interactions. The different effects of factors and their interactions on cell growth and final pH are influenced by a broad or narrow range of macronutrient concentrations. The productions of triterpenoids however were lower than 4 mg/g cell dry weight.  相似文献

Experimental and theoretical work emphasize the role of plant nutrient uptake in regulating ecosystem nutrient losses and predict that forest succession, ecosystem disturbance, and continued inputs of atmospheric nitrogen (N) will increase watershed N export. In ecosystems where snowpack insulates soils, soil-frost disturbances resulting from low or absent snowpack are thought to increase watershed N export and may become more common under climate-change scenarios. This study monitored watershed N export from the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) in response to a widespread, severe soil-frost event in the winter of 2006. We predicted that nitrate (NO3 ) export following the disturbance would be high compared to low background streamwater NO3 export in recent years. However, post-disturbance annual NO3 export was the lowest on record from both reference (undisturbed) and treated experimental harvest or CaSiO3 addition watersheds. These results are consistent with other studies finding greater than expected forest NO3 retention throughout the northeastern US and suggest that changes over the last five decades have reduced impacts of frost events on watershed NO3 export. While it is difficult to parse out causes from a complicated array of potential factors, based on long-term records and watershed-scale experiments conducted at the HBEF, we propose that reduced N losses in response to frost are due to a combination of factors including the long-term legacies of land use, process-level alterations in N pathways, climate-driven hydrologic changes, and depletion of base cations and/or reduced soil pH due to cumulative effects of acid deposition.  相似文献

Taxonomic distinctness of ciliated protozoan communities at genus-level resolution was studied over a 12-month period (June 2007–May 2008) in Jiaozhou Bay, northern China. Samples were collected biweekly from three different depths at each of five sites. A range of physico-chemical parameters were also measured in order to determine water quality. Multivariate and univariate analyses showed that (1) spatial patterns of ciliated protozoan communities were significantly different among the five sampling sites (P < 0.05); (2) there were no significant differences among the three depths at each site (P > 0.05); (3) the taxonomic patterns of ciliate communities at genus-level resolution were significantly correlated with the spatial variation of environmental variables, in particular nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), sum of NO3-N and nitrite nitrogen (NO n -N), and soluble reactive phosphate (SRP); (4) the Margalef’s index did not show a significant correlation with chemical parameters although it was higher for the less eutrophic than the more eutrophic sites (P > 0.05); (5) the average taxonomic distinctness (Δ+) and variation in taxonomic distinctness (Λ+) of the ciliate communities at genus-level resolution were significantly negatively correlated with the combination of NO n -N and SRP; (6) the paired taxonomic biodiversity indices (Δ+ and Λ+) showed a clear decreasing trend of departure from the expected taxonomic breadth in response to water quality. These results suggest that spatial patterns and taxonomic distinctness (especially the paired Δ+ and Λ+) of ciliated protozoan communities at genus-level resolution can be used as potential indicators for assessing marine water quality while minimizing costs in terms of the time and resources needed for sample analysis.  相似文献

Nitrate, ammonium, dissolved organic N, and dissolved oxygen were measured in stream water and shallow groundwater in the riparian zones of two tropical watersheds with different soils and geomorphology. At both sites, concentrations of dissolved inorganic N (DIN; NH4 +- and NO3 -N) were low in stream water (< 110 ug/L). Markedly different patterns in DIN were observed in groundwater collected at the two sites. At the first site (Icacos watershed), DIN in upslope groundwater was dominated by NO3 -N (550 ug/L) and oxygen concentrations were high (5.2 mg/L). As groundwater moved through the floodplain and to the stream, DIN shifted to dominance by NH4 +-N (200–700 ug/L) and groundwater was often anoxic. At the second site (Bisley watershed), average concentrations of total dissolved nitrogen were considerably lower (300 ug/L) than at Icacos (600 ug/L), and the dominant form of nitrogen was DON rather than inorganic N. Concentrations of NH4 + and NO3 were similar throughout the riparian zone at Bisley, but concentrations of DON declined from upslope wells to stream water. Differences in speciation and concentration of nitrogen in groundwater collected at the two sites appear to be controlled by differences in redox conditions and accessibility of dissolved N to plant roots, which are themselves the result of geomorphological differences between the two watersheds. At the Icacos site, a deep layer of coarse sand conducts subsurface water to the stream below the rooting zone of riparian vegetation and through zones of strong horizontal redox zonation. At the Bisley site, infiltration is impeded by dense clays and saturated flow passes through the variably oxidized rooting zone. At both sites, hydrologic export of nitrogen is controlled by intense biotic activity in the riparian zone. However, geomorphology appears to strongly modify the importance of specific biotic components.  相似文献

Withania somnifera is an important medicinal plant that contains withanolides and withaferins, both bioactive compounds. We have tested the effects of macroelements and nitrogen source in W. somnifera cell suspension cultures with the aim of optimizing the production of biomass and withanolide A. The effects of the macroelements NH4NO3, KNO3, CaCl2, MgSO4 and KH2PO4 at concentrations of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0× strength and of the nitrogen source [NH4 +/NO3 (mM/mM) ratio of: 0.00/18.80, 7.19/18.80, 14.38/18.80, 21.57/18.80, 28.75/18.80, 14.38/0.00, 14.38/9.40, 14.38/18.80, 14.38/28.20, and 14.38/37.60 (mM)] in Murashige and Skoog medium were tested for biomass and withanolide A production. The highest accumulation of biomass [147.81 g l−1 fresh weight (FW) and 14.02 g l−1 (dry weight (DW)] was recorded in the medium containing a 0.5× concentration of NH4NO3, and the highest production of withanolide A content was recorded in the medium with 2.0× KNO3 (4.36 mg g−1 DW). The NH4 +/NO3 ratio also influenced cell growth and withanolide A production, with both parameters being larger when the NO3 concentration was higher than that of NH4 +. Maximum biomass growth (110.45 g l−1 FW and 9.29 g l−1 DW) was achieved at an NH4 +/NO3 ratio of 7.19/18.80, while withanolide A production was greatest (3.96 mg g−1 DW) when the NH4 +/NO3 ratio was 14.38/37.60 mM.  相似文献

The present work deals with optimization of adventitious shoot culture of Bacopa monnieri for the production of biomass and bacoside A and has investigated the effects of macro elements (NH4NO3, KNO3, CaCl2, MgSO4 and KH2PO4) and nitrogen source [NH4 +/NO3 ] of Murashige and Skoog (Physiol Plant 15:473–497, 1962) medium (MS) on accumulation of biomass and bacoside A content. Optimum number of adventitious shoots (99.33 shoots explant−1), fresh weight (1.841 g) and dry weight (0.150 g) were obtained in the medium with 2.0× strength of NH4NO3. The highest production of bacoside A content was also recorded in the medium of 2.0× NH4NO3, which produced 17.935 mg g−1 DW. The number of adventitious shoot biomass and bacoside A content were optimum when the NO3 concentration was higher than that of NH4 +. Maximum number of shoots (70.00 shoots explant−1), biomass (fresh weight 1.137 g and dry weight 0.080 g) and also bacoside A content (27.106 mg g−1 DW) were obtained at NH4 +/NO3 ratio of 14.38/37.60 mM. Overall, MS medium supplemented with 2.0× NH4NO3 is recommended for most efficient bacoside A production.  相似文献

Nitrogen dynamics in Lake Okeechobee: forms, functions, and changes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Total nitrogen (TN) in Lake Okeechobee, a large, shallow, turbid lake in south Florida, has averaged between 90 and 150 μM on an annual basis since 1983. No TN trends are evident, despite major storm events, droughts, and nutrient management changes in the watershed. To understand the relative stability of TN, this study evaluates nitrogen (N) dynamics at three temporal/spatial levels: (1) annual whole lake N budgets, (2) monthly in-lake water quality measurements in offshore and nearshore areas, and (3) isotope addition experiments lasting 3 days and using 15N-ammonium (15NH4 +) and 15N-nitrate (15NO3 ) at two offshore locations. Budgets indicate that the lake is a net sink for N. TN concentrations were less variable than net N loads, suggesting that in-lake processes moderate these net loads. Monthly NO3 concentrations were higher in the offshore area and higher in winter for both offshore and nearshore areas. Negative relationships between the percentage of samples classified as algal blooms (defined as chlorophyll a > 40 μg l−1) and inorganic N concentrations suggest N-limitation. Continuous-flow experiments over intact sediment cores measured net fluxes (μmol N m−2 h−1) between 0 and 25 released from sediments for NH4 +, 0–60 removed by sediments for NO3 , and 63–68 transformed by denitrification. Uptake rates in the water column (μmol N m−2 h−1) determined by isotope dilution experiments and normalized for water depth were 1,090–1,970 for NH4 + and 59–119 for NO3 . These fluxes are similar to previously reported results. Our work suggests that external N inputs are balanced in Lake Okeechobee by denitrification.  相似文献

The influence of land use on potential fates of nitrate (NO3 ) in stream ecosystems, ranging from denitrification to storage in organic matter, has not been documented extensively. Here, we describe the Pacific Northwest component of Lotic Intersite Nitrogen eXperiment, phase II (LINX II) to examine how land-use setting influences fates of NO3 in streams. We used 24 h releases of a stable isotope tracer (15NO3-N) in nine streams flowing through forest, agricultural, and urban land uses to quantify NO3 uptake processes. NO3 uptake lengths varied two orders of magnitude (24–4247 m), with uptake rates (6.5–158.1 mg NO3-N m−2 day−1) and uptake velocities (0.1–2.3 mm min−1) falling within the ranges measured in other LINX II regions. Denitrification removed 0–7% of added tracer from our streams. In forest streams, 60.4 to 77.0% of the isotope tracer was exported downstream as NO3 , with 8.0 to 14.8% stored in wood biofilms, epilithon, fine benthic organic matter, and bryophytes. Agricultural and urban streams with streamside forest buffers displayed hydrologic export and organic matter storage of tracer similar to those measured in forest streams. In agricultural and urban streams with a partial or no riparian buffer, less than 1 to 75% of the tracer was exported downstream; much of the remainder was taken up and stored in autotrophic organic matter components with short N turnover times. Our findings suggest restoration and maintenance of riparian forests can help re-establish the natural range of NO3 uptake processes in human-altered streams.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of removing near-stream Rhododendron and of the natural blowdown of canopy trees on nutrient export to streams in the southern Appalachians. Transects were instrumented on adjacent hillslopes in a first-order watershed at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory (35°03′N, 83°25′W). Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NO3 -N, NH4 +-N, PO4 3−-P, and SO4 2− were measured for 2 years prior to disturbance. In August 1995, riparian Rhododendron on one hillslope was cut, removing 30% of total woody biomass. In October 1995, Hurricane Opal uprooted nine canopy trees on the other hillslope, downing 81% of the total woody biomass. Over the 3 years following the disturbance, soilwater concentrations of NO3 -N tripled on the cut hillslope. There were also small changes in soilwater DOC, SO4 2−, Ca2+, and Mg2+. However, no significant changes occurred in groundwater nutrient concentrations following Rhododendron removal. In contrast, soilwater NO3 -N on the storm-affected hillslope showed persistent 500-fold increases, groundwater NO3 -N increased four fold, and streamwater NO3 -N doubled. Significant changes also occurred in soilwater pH, DOC, SO4 2−, Ca2+, and Mg2+. There were no significant changes in microbial immobilization of soil nutrients or water outflow on the storm-affected hillslope. Our results suggest that Rhododendron thickets play a relatively minor role in controlling nutrient export to headwater streams. They further suggest that nutrient uptake by canopy trees is a key control on NO3 -N export in upland riparian zones, and that disruption of the root–soil connection in canopy trees via uprooting promotes significant nutrient loss to streams. Since 1987 we have studied weekly change in winter (December–April) precipitation, snowpack, snowmelt, soil water, and stream water solute flux in a small (176-ha) Northern Michigan watershed vegetated by 65–85 year-old northern hardwoods. Our primary study objective was to quantify the effect of change in winter temperature and precipitation on watershed hydrology and solute flux. During the study winter runoff was correlated with precipitation, and forest soils beneath the snowpack remained unfrozen. Winter air temperature and soil temperature beneath the snowpack increased while precipitation and snowmelt declined. Atmospheric inputs declined for H+, NO3, NH4+, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and SO42−. Replicated plot-level results, which could not be directly extrapolated to the watershed scale, showed 90% of atmospheric DIN input was retained in surface shallow (<15 cm deep) soils while SO42− flux increased 70% and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) 30-fold. Most stream water base cation (CB), HCO3, and Cl concentrations declined with increased stream water discharge, K+, NO3, and SO42− remained unchanged, and DOC and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) increased. Winter stream water solute outputs declined or were unchanged with time except for NO3 and DOC which increased. DOC and DIN outputs were correlated with the percentage of winter runoff and stream discharge that occurred when subsurface flow at the plot-level was shallow (<25 cm beneath Oi). Study results suggest that the percentage of annual runoff occurring as shallow lateral subsurface flow may be a major factor regulating solute outputs and concentrations in snowmelt-dominated ecosystems.  相似文献

The accumulation of inorganic and organic osmolytes and their role in osmotic adjustment were investigated in roots and leaves of vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides) seedlings stressed with 100, 200, and 300 mM NaCl for 9 days. The results showed that, although the contents of inorganic (K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl, NO3, SO42− and H2PO3)) and organic (soluble sugar, organic acids, and free amino acids) osmolytes all increased with NaCl concentration, the contribution of inorganic ions (mainly Na+, K+, and Cl) to osmotic adjustment was higher (71.50–80.56% of total) than that of organic solutes (19.43–28.50%). The contribution of inorganic ions increased and that of organic solutes decreased in roots with the enhanced NaCl concentration, whereas the case in leaves was opposite. On the other hand, the osmotic adjustment was only effective for vetiver grass seedlings under moderate saline stress (less than 200 mM NaCl).  相似文献
