Ultrastructure of the nerve apparatus in the arteries of the brain base has been studied in cats. The structure of peri- and adventitial nerves has been investigated electron microscopically. Three types of efferent axons and four types of synaptic vesicles (small agranular and granular, large granular, large electron opaque vesicles) have been revealed. Vesicle-containing axons in the brain arteries approach the external smooth muscle cells of about 80 nm. Terminal axonal dilatations possessing direct and mediated connections with muscular cells of the middle tunica have been revealed.  相似文献

A morphologic and morphometric examination of the major cerebral blood vessels in the dog was carried out to determine whether there were vasa vasorum in these arteries and what features might be associated with them. True vasa vasorum confined to the media were not seen in any of the vessels examined. Microvessels confined to the adventitia, however, were found in the internal carotid and vertebral arteries but not in the basilar, middle cerebral, or anterior spinal arteries. Animal size, vessel size as determined by adventitial and medial area, and the number of smooth muscle cell lamellae were not associated with the presence of these adventitial vessels; they occurred only in arteries with both an intra- and extradural portion. It therefore appears that most canine cerebral arteries do not have vasa vasorum.  相似文献

Residual strains and stresses are those that exist in a body when all external loads are removed. Residual strains in arteries can be characterized by the opening angle of the sector-like cross-section which arises when an unloaded ring segment is radially cut. A review of experimental methods for measuring residual strains and the main results about the variation of the opening angle with arterial localization, age, smooth muscle activity, mechanical environment and certain vascular pathologies are presented and discussed. It is shown that, in addition to their well-established ability to homogenize the stress field in the arterial wall, residual strains make arteries more compliant and thereby improve their performance as elastic reservoirs and ensure more effective local control of the arterial lumen by smooth muscle cells. Finally, evidence that, in some cases, residual strains remain in arteries even after they have been cut radially is discussed.  相似文献

Excessive cholesterol constitutes a major risk factor for vascular disease. Within cells, cholesterol is distributed in detergent-sensitive and detergent-resistant fractions, with the largest amount of cholesterol residing in cellular membranes. We set out to determine whether various arteries differ in their ability to accumulate esterified and non-esterified cholesterol in detergent-sensitive versus detergent-resistant fractions throughout the course of a high-cholesterol diet. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were placed on 2 % cholesterol diet while a control group was receiving iso-caloric standard chow. Liver, aorta, and pulmonary, mesenteric, and cerebral arteries were collected at 2–6, 8–12, 14–18, and 20–24 weeks from the start of high-cholesterol diet. After fraction separation, esterified and free non-esterified cholesterol levels were measured. In all arteries, largest cholesterol amounts were present in detergent-sensitive fractions in the non-esterified form. Overall, cholesterol in aorta and cerebral arteries was elevated during 14–18 weeks of high-cholesterol diet. Cerebral arteries also exhibited increase in esterified cholesterol within detergent-sensitive domains, as well as increase in cholesterol level in the detergent-resistant fraction at earlier time-points of diet. Pulmonary artery and mesenteric artery were largely resistant to cholesterol accumulation. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis revealed up-regulation of low-density lipoprotein receptor (Ldlr) and low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (Lrp1) gene expression in cerebral arteries when compared to mesenteric and pulmonary arteries, respectively. In summary, we unveiled the differential ability of arteries to accumulate cholesterol over the course of a high-cholesterol diet. The differential accumulation of cholesterol seems to correlate with the up-regulated gene expression of proteins responsible for cholesterol uptake.  相似文献

Summary A consecutive demonstration of both aminergic and cholinergic nerves of rat cerebral arteries was carried out on whole mount preparations. For demonstration of aminergic nerves the glyoxylic acid method was used, while for cholinergic nerves Karnovsky's technique was utilized consecutively. This procedure provided a highly sensitive and reproducible demonstration of the two systems on the same specimen. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Aminergic and cholinergic nerves were distributed densely in the proximal portions of the major cerebral arteries examined. They were dense in the arteries of the anterior circulation and sparse in the posterior circulation. Each nerve had two different patterns, i.e. circular and longitudinal. Both circular and longitudinal patterns were observed in the proximal portions of the arteries, while in the distal portions, longitudinal fibres were predominantly present. 2) Superior cervical ganglionectomy produced no change in cholinergic nerve distribution, while it caused decreased density of aminergic nerves on the ipsilateral side on the arteries of the anterior circulation. The contralateral anterior cerebral arteries were partially affected. Bilateral sympathectomies abolished aminergic nerves in all arteries except the vertebral artery.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that endothelial cells from resistance arteries and epicardial conduit coronary arteries differ in their expression of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and calcium metabolism, and that these differences contribute to the mechanism underlying disparate physiological vasodilator responses observed between the two populations of vessels. The functional vasodilator responses of isolated resistance arteries and epicardial conduit coronary arteries were compared in vitro using both the receptor-independent agonist A23187 ionophore to increase intracellular calcium and the receptor-dependent agonist bradykinin. Constitutive NOS (cNOS) activity in monocultures of endothelial cells derived from resistance arteries and conduit arteries was assayed using a fibroblast-reporter cell method. Intracellular calcium concentration was assessed using fura-2 microfluorometry. Nitric oxide production was determined using a chemiluminescence technique, while cNOS protein was quantitated by Western blot analysis. A23187 was a less potent vasodilator of resistance arteries studied in vitro, compared to epicardial conduit arteries (EC50 = 1.6 μM, resistance artery vs. EC50 = 0.03 μM, conduit artery); however, bradykinin was more potent in resistance arteries (EC50 = 0.3 nM, resistance artery vs. EC50 = 2 nM, conduit artery). In pure monocultures of endothelium, nitric oxide production measured by chemiluminescence both basally and in response to A23187 was significantly less in resistance arteries (6.1 ± 0.5, basal vs. 10.80 ± 0.55, stimulated nmol/μg protein), compared to conduit arteries (7.7 ± 0.5, basal vs. 17.00 ± 1.52, stimulated nmol/μg protein; P < 0.05 resistance artery endothelium vs. conduit artery endothelium). cNOS enzyme activity assessed by cGMP production in reporter cell fibroblasts was also lower in resistance arteries compared to conduit arteries (0.17 ± 0.03 vs. 0.33 ± 0.05 fmol cGMP/μg protein, respectively; P < 0.05 resistance artery endothelium vs. conduit artery endothelium). Conduit arteries expressed 2.1 × more cNOS protein than resistance arteries, as assessed by Western blotting of cellular homogenates. No significant differences were found with microfluorimetry in either basal or ionophore-stimulated intracellular calcium concentrations. The results signified that porcine resistance arteries expressed less NOS and produced less nitric oxide than epicardial conduit arteries both basally and in response to an increase in intracellular calcium. This difference was reflected functionally as a decreased vasodilatory response to increased intracellular calcium in resistance arteries that could not be explained on the basis of differences in the metabolism of intracellular calcium. In contrast, the functional vasodilator response of intact vessels to a receptor-mediated agonist was enhanced in resistance arteries compared to conduit arteries, suggesting an important role of signal transduction mechanisms in specific physiological responses. Thus, the ability of the endothelium to regulate on a regional basis the expression of NOS and integrate receptor-mediated responses with these differences may provide a mechanism for diverse vasomotor responses in different populations of vessels. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Vertebral arteries are two arteries whose structure and location in human body result in development of special flow conditions. For some of the arteries, one can observe a significant difference between flow rates in the left and the right arteries during ultrasonography diagnosis. Usually the reason of such a difference was connected with pathology of the artery in which a smaller flow rate was detected. Simulations of the flow through the selected type of the vertebral artery geometry for twenty five cases of artery diameters have been carried out. The main aim of the presented experiment was to visualize the flow in the region of vertebral arteries junction in the origin of the basilar artery. It is extremely difficult to examine this part of human circulation system, thus numerical experiments may be helpful in understanding the phenomena occurring when two relatively large arteries join together to form one vessel. The obtained results have shown that an individual configuration and diameters of particular arteries can exert an influence on the flow in them and affect a significant difference between flow rates for vertebral arteries. It has been assumed in the investigations that modelled arteries were absolutely normal, without any pathology. In the numerical experiment, the non-Newtonian model of blood was employed.  相似文献

To analyze the accumulation of elements in the rami of the coronary arteries, the authors determined element contents in both the coronary arteries and their rami of the Thai by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. The subjects consisted of 13 men and 6 women, ranging in age from 34 to 83 yr. It was found that a higher accumulation of calcium and phosphorus occurred in the proximal sites of coronary arteries such as the anterior descending, right coronary, left coronary, and circumflex arteries than the distal sites such as the diagonal, lateral, conus, acute marginal, and posterior descending arteries. The accumulation of calcium and phosphorus in the anterior descending and right coronary arteries of the Thai increased remarkably in the fifties, thereafter decreased, and increased again in the eighties. It should be noted that a very high accumulation of calcium and phosphorus in the coronary arteries occurred in the fifties. In regard to relationships among the average contents of elements in the coronary arteries and their rami, it was found that there were very significant direct correlations between calcium and phosphorus contents, between calcium and magnesium contents, and between phosphorus and magnesium contents. These results suggested that as calcium and phosphorus increased in the coronary arteries and their rami, magnesium increased simultaneously in all of the coronary arteries and their rami.  相似文献

Since the rabbit's eye more nearly resembles the human eye than any other mammal used in experimental investigations, a detailed study of its ciliary arteries has been made. A closely timed series of embryos injected through the living umbilical vein and rendered transparent show, in thick sections, silhouetted vessels in perspective. Heretofore the ciliary arteries have been studied from their first identification until they have reached the primitive choriocapillaris, but no farther. This study shows their complete history including their relation to the circulus arteriosus iridis major and to the pupillary membrane. Our special concern has been ferreting out the mode of migration of the components of the definitive arteries. New findings include: (1) an arteriovenous plexus which mediates the transference from vessels anastomotic with it to other such vessels; (2) functionally different segments of the primitive ciliary arteries; (3) different arterial and venous plexuses which play roles in embryonic development; (4) discovery of the realignment of the choriocapillaris into vertical vessel meshes with transverse anastomoses between them, each of which have different fates; (5) the mode of development of the circulus arteriosus iridis major; (6) a crown of venous vessels looping around the iris margin; and (7) a special arterial supply for the ciliary processes.  相似文献

The stability of arteries is essential to normal arterial functions and loss of stability can lead to arterial tortuosity and kinking. Collagen is a main extracellular matrix component that modulates the mechanical properties of arteries and collagen degradation at pathological conditions weakens the mechanical strength of arteries. However, the effects of collagen degradation on the mechanical stability of arteries are unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of collagen degradation on the critical buckling pressure of arteries. Arterial specimens were subjected to pressurized inflation testing and fitted with nonlinear thick-walled cylindrical model equations to determine their stress strain relationships. The arteries were then tested for the critical buckling pressure at a set of axial stretch ratios. Then, arteries were divided into three groups and treated with Type III collagenase at three different concentrations (64, 128, and 400 U/ml). Mechanical properties and buckling pressures of the arteries were determined after collagenase treatment. Additionally, the theoretical buckling pressures were also determined using a buckling equation. Our results demonstrated that the buckling pressure of arteries was lower after collagenase treatment. The difference between pre- and post- treatment was statistically significant for the highest concentration of 400U/ml but not at the lower concentrations. The buckling equation was found to yield a fair estimation to the experimental critical pressure measurements. These results shed light on the role of matrix remodeling on the mechanical stability of arteries and developments of tortuous arteries.  相似文献

The natriuretic peptides (NPs) ANF, BNP, and CNP have potent anti-proliferative and anti-migratory effects on vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs). These properties make NPs relevant to the study of human coronary atherosclerosis because vascular cell proliferation and migration are central to the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. However, the existence and cytological distribution of NPs and their receptors in human coronary arteries remain undetermined. This has hampered the development of hypotheses regarding the possible role of NPs in human coronary disease. We determined the pattern of expression of NPs and their receptors (NPRs) in human coronary arteries with atherosclerotic lesions classified by standard histopathological criteria as fatty streak/early atherosclerotic lesions, intermediate plaques, or advanced lesions. The investigation was carried out using a combination of immunocytochemistry (ICC), in situ hybridization (ISH), and semi-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Both by ICC and ISH, ANF was found in the intimal and medial layers of all lesions. BNP was highly expressed in advanced lesions where it was particularly evident by a strong ISH signal but weak ICC staining. CNP was demonstrable in all types of lesions, giving a strong signal by ISH and ICC. This peptide was particularly demonstrable in the endothelium, as well as in the SMCs of the intima, media, and vasa vasorum of the adventitia and in macrophages. By ISH, NPR-A was not detectable in any of the lesions but both NPR-B and NPR-C were found in the intimal and the inner medial layers. By RT-PCR, mRNA levels of all NPs tended to be increased in macroscopically diseased arteries, but only the values for BNP were significantly so. No significant changes in NPR mRNA levels were detected by PCR. In general, the signal intensity given by the NPs and their receptors by ICC or ISH appeared dependent on the type of lesion, being strongest in intermediate plaques and decreasing with increasing severity of the lesion. This study constitutes the first demonstration of NPs and NPR mRNAs in human coronary arteries and supports the existence of an autocrine/paracrine NP system that is actively modulated during the progression of atherosclerotic coronary disease. This suggests that the coronary NP system is involved in the pathobiology of intimal plaque formation in humans and may be involved in vascular remodeling.  相似文献

Comprehensive examination was made in women (mean age 49.6 +/- 7.4 years) with rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed abnormalities of brachiocephalic and coronary arteries in 86% of cases. Duplex scanning of brachiocephalic arteries revealed changes in 82% of the women. 64-section spiral computed tomography established coronary artery abnormalities in 33% of cases. There were isolated changes in the brachiocephalic arteries in 50% of the patients, a concomitant lesion of the brachiocephalic and coronary arteries in 32%, and isolated changes in the coronary arteries in 4%. A direct correlation was found between the index of coronary artery calcification and the intima-media thickness of brachiocephalic arteries.  相似文献

Structural peculiarities of pial arteries and their active microvascular segments-sphincters in offshoots and precortical arteries have been investigated, using electron and light microscopy. Our studies have revealed that these vascular segments, which can independently change their lumen, possess multiple myoendothelial junctions, as well as neuro-muscular contacts. A mathematical model of carotid arteries is constructed from the known experimental data. Passive properties of the vascular wall are characterized by an alternating module of elasticity, the active ones by the specific power of muscle contraction. Its maximum value (0,023 n/m-3) is shown to be reached with intravascular pressure 190 mm Hg. The dependence of inner radius on the power of muscle contraction is studied at different values of intravascular pressure. It is shown that theactive properties of carotid arteries are essentially determined by their passive properties and depend on the stretching of the vessel wall.  相似文献

The thickness of the media of the aorta and the carotid, iliac, and renal arteries was measured in hibernating and nonhibernating marmots. A positive correlation was found between body weight and the thickness of the media of carotid and iliac arteries. The relation noted apparently was not due to the mean arterial pressure prior to and during hibernation, since there was no difference in the thickness of the media between nonhibernating and hibernating females. The difference due to gender could be accounted for by the greater average body weight of males. The media of the renal arteries demonstrated no relation between their thickness and body weight.  相似文献

To elucidate the compositional changes of the cerebral arteries with aging, the authors investigated age-related changes of the calcium and phosphorus contents in the cerebral arteries by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. The subjects consisted of 11 men and 5 women, ranging in age from 52 to 96 yr. The anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries derived from the same subjects were used in the present study. It was found that there were no significant relationships between age and calcium or phosphorus content in the anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries, indicating that the accumulation of calcium and phosphorus scarcely occurred in the anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries with aging. It was examined whether there were relationships in the calcium and phosphorus contents among the anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries. It was found that there was a significant relationship in both the contents of calcium and phosphorus between the middle and posterior cerebral arteries, but not between the anterior and middle cerebral arteries nor between the anterior and posterior cerebral arteries.  相似文献

Examiniation of 163 series of coeliacograms and 10 series of angiograms of the superior mesentery artery has established thatby a conventional method the gallbladder artery is revealed in 79.1% of observations. The gall-bladder is blood supplied by a solitary or a double artery , or by numerous small vessels (scattered type of blood supply). Distinctive features of the gall-bladder arteries are:the site of their origination, the type of branching, irregular sinous course and false enlargements of the lumen as well as the disposition of arteries and their branches coinciding withthe topographs of the bladder determined in the parenchymatous phase. The main causes preventing determination of the gall-bladder arteries are both insufficiently contrast angiograms andpoor accumulation of the contrast substance in the bladder wall. Superposition of theshade of the enlarged liver is one of the obstacles in determinating the gall-bladder arteries. The author's experience show that the sourses of the gall baldder blood supply can be revealedin most cases in ordinary coeliacograms.  相似文献

To examine whether the calcium accumulation in the arteries is related to the way of walk or not, the calcium contents were determined in various arteries of Japanese monkeys of quadrupedal walk by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. Japanese monkeys consisted of five males and four females, ranging in age from 2 to 29 yr. Age-related changes of the calcium content were examined in various monkey arteries. Significant relationships between age and calcium content were found in the arteries, such as the axillary, brachial, radial, subclavian, common carotid, common iliac, and femoral arteries, but not statistically in the thoracic and abdominal aortas, ulnar, external iliac, internal iliac, popliteal, and tibial arteries. The average contents of calcium were compared between the two groups of the monkeys below 14 yr and over 24 yr of age. Below 14 yr, the calcium content was a little higher in the arteries, such as the common, external and internal iliac, and femoral arteries than that of the other ones. Over 24 yr, the calcium content increased remarkably in the arteries, such as the thoracic aorta, common, internal and external iliac, common carotid, and subclavian arteries. The calcium contents of the thoracic aorta, common, internal and external iliac, common carotid, and subclavian arteries increased by more than two times over 24 yr compared with those below 14 yr. In a comparison between the calcium contents of the arteries in the anatomically corresponding regions of the upper and lower limbs, no statistically significant differences were found in the subjects over 24 yr as well as the subjects 2–29 yr of age. The calcium accumulation in the arteries of monkeys with aging was different from those in the arteries of humans, because in the case of human, a very high accumulation of calcium occurred in the arteries of the lower limb with aging in comparison with those in the upper limbs. Therefore, it is likely that different ways of walk or different species are partly affected in the calcium accumulation in the arteries with aging.  相似文献
