Two hypotheses, nutrient constraints and detoxification limitation, have been proposed to explain the lack of specialists among mammalian herbivores. The nutrient constraint hypothesis proposes that dietary specialization in mammalian herbivores is rare because no one plant can provide all requisite nutrients. The detoxification limitation hypothesis suggests that the mammalian detoxification system is incapable of detoxifying high doses of similar secondary compounds present in a diet of a single plant species. We experimentally tested these hypotheses by comparing the performance of specialist and generalist woodrats (Neotoma) on a variety of dietary challenges. Neotoma stephensi is a narrow dietary specialist with a single species, one-seeded juniper, Juniperus monosperma, comprising 85–95% of its diet. Compared with other plants available in the habitat, juniper is low in nitrogen and high in fiber, phenolics, and monoterpenes. The generalist woodrat, N. albigula, also consumes one-seeded juniper, but to a lesser degree. The nutrient constraint hypothesis was examined by feeding both species of woodrats a low-nitrogen, high-fiber diet similar to that found in juniper. We found no differences in body mass change, or apparent digestibility of dry matter or nitrogen between the two species of woodrats after 35 days on this diet. Moreover, both species were in positive nitrogen balance. We tested the detoxification limitation hypothesis by comparing the performance of the generalist and specialist on diets with and without juniper leaves, the preferred foliage of the specialist, as well as on diets with and without α-pinene, the predominant monoterpene in juniper. We found that on the juniper diet, compared with the specialist, the generalist consumed less juniper and lost more mass. Urine pH, a general indicator of overall detoxification processes, declined in both groups on the juniper diet. The generalist consumed half the toxin load of the specialist yet its urine pH was slightly lower. Moreover, the generalist consumed significantly less of the treatment with high concentrations of α-pinene compared to the control treatment, while the specialist consumed the same amount of food regardless of α-pinene concentration. For both groups, urine pH declined as levels of α-pinene in the diet increased. The generalist produced a significantly more acidic urine than the specialist on the treatment with the highest α-pinene concentration. Our results suggest that in this system, specialists detoxify plant secondary compounds differently than generalists and plant secondary compounds may be more important than low nutrient levels in maintaining dietary diversity in generalist herbivores. Leaf δ13C is an indicator of water-use efficiency and provides useful information on the carbon and water balance of plants over longer periods. Variation in leaf δ13C between or within species is determined by plant physiological characteristics and environmental factors. We hypothesized that variation in leaf δ13C values among dominant species reflected ecosystem patterns controlled by large-scale environmental gradients, and that within-species variation indicates plant adaptability to environmental conditions. To test these hypotheses, we collected leaves of dominant species from six ecosystems across a horizontal vegetation transect on the Tibetan Plateau, as well as leaves of Kobresia pygmaea (herbaceous) throughout its distribution and leaves of two coniferous tree species ( Picea crassifolia, Abies fabri ) along an elevation gradient throughout their distribution in the Qilian Mountains and Gongga Mountains, respectively. Leaf δ13C of dominant species in the six ecosystems differed significantly, with values for evergreen coniferous13C values of the dominant species and of K. pygmaea were negatively correlated with annual precipitation along a water gradient, but leaf δ13C of A. fabri was not significantly correlated with precipitation in habitats without water-stress. This confirms that variation of δ13C between or within species reflects plant responses to environmental conditions. Leaf δ13C of the dominant species also reflected water patterns on the Tibetan Plateau, providing evidence that precipitation plays a primary role in controlling ecosystem changes from southeast to northwest on the Tibetan Plateau.  相似文献

The acquisition of adequate quantities of nitrogen is a challenge for herbivorous vertebrates because many plants are in low nitrogen and contain secondary metabolites that reduce nitrogen digestibility. To investigate whether herbivores maintain nitrogen balance on plant diets low in nitrogen and high in secondary compounds, we studied the effect of juniper (Juniperus monosperma) ingestion on the nitrogen balance of two species of herbivorous woodrats (Neotoma stephensi and N. albigula). These woodrat species feed on the foliage of juniper: N. stephensi is a juniper specialist, whereas N. albigula is a generalist that incorporates some juniper in its diet. Based on the nitrogen contents of the natural diets of these woodrats, we predicted that the generalist would be in negative nitrogen balance on a juniper diet whereas the specialist would not be affected. We found that both species of woodrat had low-nitrogen requirements (334.2 mg N/kg0.75/day) and that a diet of 50% juniper did not result in negative nitrogen balance for either species. However, excretion patterns of nitrogen were altered; on the 50% juniper diet, fecal nitrogen losses increased ~38% and urinary nitrogen losses were half that of the control diet. The results suggest that absorption and detoxification of juniper secondary compounds may be more important for restricting juniper intake by the generalist than nitrogen imbalance.  相似文献

1. Stable isotope analysis, coupled with dietary data from the literature, was used to investigate trophic patterns of freshwater fauna in a tropical stream food web (Guadeloupe, French West Indies).
2. Primary producers (biofilm, algae and plant detritus of terrestrial origin) showed distinct δ13C signatures, which allowed for a powerful discrimination of carbon sources. Both autochthonous (13C-enriched signatures) and allochthonous (13C-depleted signatures) resources enter the food web. The migrating behaviour of fishes and shrimps between marine and freshwater during their life cycles can be followed by carbon isotopes. Here, shrimp δ13C signatures were shown to shift from −16‰ (for juveniles under marine influence) to −24.7‰ (for adults in freshwater habitats). For resident species, δ13C values partly reflected the species' habitat preferences along the river continuum : species living in river mouths were 13C-enriched in comparison with those collected upstream.
3. Nitrogen isotopic ratios were also discriminating and defined three main trophic guilds among consumers. The δ15N values of herbivores/detritivores were 5.0–8.4‰, omnivores 8.8–10.2‰ and carnivores 11–12.7‰.
4. Mixing model equations were employed to calculate the possible range of contribution made by respective food sources to the diet of each species. The results revealed the importance of omnivorous species and the dependence of riverine biota on terrestrial subsidies, such as leaf detritus and fruits. Finally, the abundance of shrimps and their feeding habits placed in relief their key role in tropical freshwater food webs. Isotopic analysis provides a useful tool for assessing animal feeding patterns.  相似文献

Foliar δ^13C values, an indicator of long-term intercellular carbon dioxide concentration and, thus, of long-term water use efficiency (WUE) in plants, were measured for Pinus massoniana Lamb., P. elliottii Engelm., Cunninghamia laceolata (Lamb.) Hook., and Schima superba Gardn. et Champ. in a restored forest ecosystem in the Jiazhu River Basin. Seasonal variation and the relationship between the foliar δ^13C values of the four species and environmental factors (monthly total precipitation, monthly average air temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, and monthly total solar radiation and evaporation) were investigated. The monthly δ^13C values and WUE of the four species increased with increasing precipitation, air temperature, solar radiation, and evaporation, whereas δ^13C values of the four species decreased with increasing relative humidity and atmospheric pressure. Despite significant differences in δ^13C seasonal means for the four species, our results demonstrate a significant convergence in the responses of δ^13C values and WUE to seasonal variations in environmental factors among the species investigated and that the δ^13C signature for each species gives a strong indication of environmental variables.  相似文献

The antiquity of the use of seaweed to feed domestic animals was investigated through carbon ( δ 13C) and oxygen ( δ 18O) isotope analysis of tooth enamel bioapatite. The analysis was performed on sheep and cattle teeth from two Neolithic sites in Orkney (Scotland). At the Knap of Howar, c . 3600 bc , carbon isotopes reflect grazing on terrestrial plants throughout the year for both sheep and cattle, with no contribution of seaweed to their diet. At the Holm of Papa Westray North (HPWN), c . 3000 bc , significant contribution of seaweed to the sheep diet during winter is indicated by bioapatite δ 13C values as high as −5.7‰, far outside of the range of values expected for the feeding on terrestrial C3 plants, and δ 18O values higher than expected during winter, possibly caused by ingestion of oceanic water with seaweed. Ingestion of seaweed by sheep at HPWN might have been necessitated by severe reduction of pastures during winter. Results suggest that sheep ingested fresh seaweed rather than dry fodder, perhaps directly on the shore as sheep do nowadays on North Ronaldsay. A significant difference between the two populations is the exclusive reliance on seaweed by the North Ronaldsay sheep, which have developed physiological adaptations to this diet. Contribution of seaweed to the sheep winter diet at HPWN might have been a first step towards this adaptation.  相似文献

Bee dietary preferences,or the floral resources that they consistently collect, likely impact where a species can persist. For this reason it is likely that bee dietary preferences are dependent upon the composition of the plant community. In this study,we evaluated floral visits and pollen loads of the mining bee,Andrena angustitarsata Viereck, across a 630 km north-south range to understand dietary preferences along a floral resource gradient.Previous research,in a more geographically limited area, suggested this species was an eclectic oligolege on predominantly Apiaceae and in part Rosaceae. In the present study we found the species predominately visited and collected pollen from Apiaceae and Rosaceae, but visited 12 flower families and collected pollen from 32,distinguishing them as generalist foragers. The frequency of Apiaceae pollen on the bees and the species-level specialization index(a measure of visit specialization)were higher in regions with higher Apiaceae abundance. In addition Apiaceae and Rosaceae were the only plant families significantly preferred for pollen collection, regardless of floral abundance. We conclude that across our study region A.angustitarsata has a generalist dietary breadth, but also has dietary preference for Apiaceae and Rosaceae. Our study indicates that while bees may overall make generalist foraging decisions they may still prefer and likely benefit from selecting fewer flower taxa.  相似文献

Enriched δ13C values (annual average – 11.2‰) suggest that in the study site (Stagnone di Marsala, Italy) the sand smelt Atherina boyeri exploited benthic prey throughout the year. In particular, Mysidacea and Isopoda seemed to dominate the diet. Stomach content data from the literature was in partial agreement with the present isotopic analysis suggesting that, while Mysidacea and Isopoda are exploited by A. boyeri , Copepoda Harpacticoida and Amphipoda are the dominant food items of the sand smelt diet. Several hypotheses are proposed to explain such partially different results from the two techniques. Both season and size influenced the δ13C and δ15N values of A. boyeri . Although throughout the sampling year, A. boyeri showed very enriched δ13C and δ15N values consistent with a diet based on benthic resources, it showed significant seasonal differences in both nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios. Such a finding suggests that the food preferences of A. boyeri undergo small seasonal differences, probably as a consequence of prey availability. Size also affected the isotopic composition of the sand-smelt indicating that this species shows ontogenetic diet shifts in the study site. Compared with other Mediterranean trophic data of the sand smelt these results substantiate the great adaptability of A. boyeri to the local environmental resources and its trophic plasticity.  相似文献

Leaves of 407 individuals of Reaumuria soongorica (Pall.) Maxim. collected from the major distribution areas were measured to investigate the distribution characteristics of the stable carbon isotope in this desert plant, as well as correlations between δ^13C values and environmental factors. Results showed that δ^13C values in R. soongorica ranged from -22.77‰ to -29.85‰ and that the mean δ^13C value (-26.52‰) was higher than a previously reported δ^13C value for a different desert ecosystem. This indicates that R. soongorica belongs to the C3 photosynthetic pathway and has higher water use efficiency than other species. The correlations between δ^13C values and environmental factors demonstrated that the foliar δ^13C values in R. soongorica increased significantly with decreasing mean annual precipitation and mean relative humidity, and decreased with decreasing duration of sunshine and evaporation. The spatial distribution trend of δ^13C values in R. soongorica was not obvious and there was no significant correlation between the δ^13C values and mean annual temperature. We conclude that different distribution trends in δ^13C values for R. soongorica were likely caused by stomatal limitation rather than by nutrient-related changes in photosynthetic efficiency and that precipitation played an important role in the wide distribution range of R. soongorica. This pattern of δ^13C values for R. soongorica reinforced that it is a super-xerophil in terms of its adaptive strategies to a desert environment.  相似文献

1.  The δ13C and δ15N signatures of zooplankton vary with dissolved organic carbon (DOC), but inconsistent and limited taxonomic resolution of previous studies have masked differences that may exist among orders, genera or species and are attributable to dietary and/or habitat differences. Here we investigate differences among the isotopic signatures of five zooplankton taxa ( Daphnia , Holopedium , large Calanoida, small Calanoida and Cyclopoida) in Precambrian shield lakes with a sixfold range of DOC concentration.
2.  δ13C signatures of Daphnia , small calanoids and large calanoids became more depleted with increasing lake DOC, whereas Holopedium and cyclopoid δ13C became enriched with increasing DOC concentration.
3.  The variability of δ13C and δ15N isotopic signatures among zooplankton groups was reduced in high-DOC, compared to low-DOC lakes, especially for δ13C. Differences in δ13C and POM-corrected δ15N accounted for up to 33.7% and 19.5% of the variance, respectively, among lakes of varying DOC concentration.
4.  The narrow range of signatures found in higher DOC lakes suggests that different taxa have similar food sources and/or habitats. In contrast, the wide range of signatures in low-DOC lakes suggests that different taxa are exploiting different food sources and/or habitats. Together with the variable trends in zooplankton isotopic signatures along our DOC gradient, these results suggest that food web dynamics within the zooplankton community of temperate lakes will change as climate and lake DOC concentrations change.  相似文献

Stable isotope and scat analyses were used in concert to determine trophic level and dietary overlap among California sea lions from different rookeries in the Gulf of California. Isotopic analysis of the fur of sea lion pups revealed differences in δ15N and δ13C values among rookeries during the breeding season. Mean δ15N and δ13C values varied from 20.2‰ to 22.4‰ and from −15.4‰ to −14.0‰, respectively. The pattern of differences among rookeries was similar between years in most cases. Isotopic variations among rookeries were associated with differences in prey consumption. There was a significant correlation between δ15N value and trophic level, as determined by scat analysis. Joint application of isotopic and scat analyses allowed us to identify how the feeding habits of sea lions vary with location. Our results suggest the presence of spatial structure in available prey as well as the localized use of prey by sea lions across the Gulf of California.  相似文献

Carbon isotope ratio of leaf dry matter, δ 13C, was measured on species occurring within Baiyin desert community, consisting of valley, slope and ridge microhabitats, and within Shandan desert community, consisting of Gobi desert and seasonal flooded creek microhabitats, in Northwest China. δ 13C of C3 species increased with a decrease in soil water availability, suggesting that water-use efficiency (WUE) increased with decreasing soil moisture, whereas for all C4 species, δ 13C tended to decrease with decreasing soil water availability, suggesting that WUE also increased with decreasing soil moisture. Above results indicated that water-use pattern was conservative under drought for C4 and C3 plants. In this present study, C4 species' occurrences within different microhabitats were investigated and C4 plants were observed to be absent and/or scarce within relatively lower soil moisture microhabitats, whereas they occurred and/or even had a high abundance within relatively higher soil moisture microhabitats, suggesting limited moisture available was a key factor of limiting C4 distribution in arid region of Northwest China.  相似文献

1. Nitrogen and carbon stable-isotope ratios (δ15N and δ13C) of body tissues, mound/nest materials and dietary substrates were determined in termite species with differing trophic habits, sampled from the Mbalmayo Forest Reserve, southern Cameroon.
2. δ15N of termite tissues was enriched gradually along a spectrum of species representing a trophic gradient from wood- to soil-feeding. Species that could be identified from their general biology and from gut content analysis as feeding on well-rotted wood or as wood/soil interface feeders showed δ15N intermediate between sound-wood-feeders and soil-feeders. It is proposed that δ15N is therefore a possible indicator of the functional position of species in the humification process. Differences in δ13C were also observed between wood-feeding and soil-feeding forms.
3. High values of δ15N in soil-feeding termites suggest that nitrogen fixation is of little importance in these species.
4. A wide range of isotope effects (the difference in isotope ratios between termites and their diet) was observed for both nitrogen (Δδ15N = –1.6 to + 8.8‰) and carbon (Δδ13C = –2.2 to + 3.0‰), which suggests a diversity of nutrient acquisition mechanisms within termites and diverse relationships between termites and their intestinal micro-organisms.  相似文献

Constraints on rates of detoxification and elimination of plant toxins are thought to be responsible for limiting dietary specialization in mammalian herbivores. This hypothesis, known as the detoxification limitations hypothesis, suggests that most mammalian herbivores are generalists to avoid overdosing on toxins from a single plant species. The hypothesis also predicts that the few mammalian specialists that exist should have adaptations for rapid detoxification and elimination of plant secondary compounds. We took a pharmacological approach to test whether specialists eliminate toxins from the bloodstream faster than generalists. We compared elimination rate and total exposure of alpha-pinene in closely related dietary specialist and generalist woodrats, Neotoma stephensi and N. albigula, respectively. Animals were orally gavaged with alpha-pinene, a plant secondary compound present in the natural diets of both woodrat species. We collected venous blood at 3, 6, 10, 15, and 20 min post-ingestion of alpha-pinene. Blood was analyzed for alpha-pinene concentration using gas chromatography. We found that specialist and generalist woodrats did not differ in elimination rates of alpha-pinene. However, specialists had lower exposure levels of alpha-pinene than generalists due to lower initial delivery of alpha-pinene to the general circulation. The levels of alpha-pinene detected in the bloodstream of specialists were 4.7-5.3x lower over all time intervals than generalists. Thus, specialists encounter a functionally lower dose of toxin than generalists. We suggest that the lower exposure level of specialist woodrats may be due to mechanisms in the gut that decrease toxin absorption. Regardless of mechanism, lower exposure to plant toxins may allow specialists to forage on diets with high toxin concentrations thereby facilitating dietary specialization.  相似文献

Carbon stable-isotope analysis showed that individual brown trout Salmo trutta in Loch Lomond adopted strategies intermediate to that of freshwater residency or anadromy, suggesting either repeated movement between freshwater and marine environments, or estuarine residency. Carbon stable-isotope (δ13C) values from Loch Lomond brown trout muscle tissue ranged from those indicative of assimilation of purely freshwater-derived carbon to those reflecting significant utilization of marine-derived carbon. A single isotope, two-source mixing model indicated that, on average, marine C made a 33% contribution to the muscle tissue C of Loch Lomond brown trout. Nitrogen stable isotope, δ15N, but not δ13C was correlated with fork length suggesting that larger fish were feeding at a higher trophic level but that marine feeding was not indicated by larger body size. These results are discussed with reference to migration patterns in other species.  相似文献

The potential trophic impact of introduced brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis on native brown trout Salmo trutta in a mountain stream (south-west France) was investigated using stable isotope analysis (SIA). The isotopic signatures (δ13C and δ15N) of S. fontinalis were similar regardless of the absence or presence of S. trutta , and SIA mixing models revealed that S. fontinalis diet consisted mainly of terrestrial invertebrates. Conversely, a significant shift in S. trutta isotopic signatures (depletion of 1·6‰δ13C and enrichment of 0·6‰δ15N) was observed in sympatry with S. fontinalis ; this may be due to a dietary shift towards terrestrial invertebrates. Contrary to an expected dietary divergence in sympatry, an elevated level of dietary overlap was observed between the non-native and native salmonids when in co-occurrence. This dietary convergence is more likely to be due to behavioural interactions than to variations in food availability or fish displacements.  相似文献

1. We examined whether egg fatty acid (FA) profiles and stable isotopes (SIA) could be used in a comparative way to infer the diet of two aquatic bird species with contrasting feeding habits: a surface forager, the pheasant-tailed jacana ( Hydrophasianus chirurgus ), and a pursuit-diving forager, the little cormorant ( Phalacrocorax niger ), at Haleji Lake (Pakistan).
2. The species differed markedly in the overall percentage of saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Moreover, among jacanas, two groups of birds had relatively high or low concentrations of long-chain essential PUFAs (such as 18:2 n-6 and 20:4 n-6), suggesting differing contributions from animal prey and plant material.
3. These trophic differences were corroborated by δ15N values which indicated both a higher trophic position in cormorants relative to jacanas, and differences in trophic position for the two groups of jacanas. In this latter species δ13C values in both groups also pointed to differing diets, involving mainly grazing plants or a contribution from animal resources (aquatic invertebrates or insects).
4. Both lower values of δ13C and higher percentages of 18:1 n-7 detected in little cormorants may indicate the influence of the anoxic water, typical of a freshwater system densely covered by macrophytes.
5. These results indicate how both biomarkers offer complementary information in studies of feeding ecology, refining interpretations of trophic pathways which are usually based on FA or SIA alone. Comparisons of FA profiles and SIA among species also proved to be a reliable approach for inferring the diet of species for which information is scarce or contradictory, as is the case for the pheasant-tailed jacana.  相似文献

Stable isotope (δ15N and δ13C) values of individual tooth annuli of female Steller sea lions ( n = 120) collected from the 1960s through the 1980s were used for retrospective analyses of temporal changes in food webs in the Gulf of Alaska and North Pacific Ocean. We also examined isotopically contour feathers of tufted puffins ( n = 135) and crested auklets ( n = 37) through this period to test for broader isotopic patterns indicative of whole food web changes. Steller sea lions decreased slightly in δ13C and increased in δ15N values, suggesting an increasing trophic level and change in foraging location or oceanographic isotopic signature. Steller sea lion first and second tooth annuli were enriched in 15N and depleted in 13C compared with subsequent annuli, indicating the effects of maternal influence through weaning. The general pattern of increasing δ15N values among Steller sea lions supports previous conclusions regarding a reduction or redistribution of forage fishes and an increase of demersal and semi-demersal species in the North Pacific ecosystem. There were no significant changes in δ15N values for either bird species. However, δ13C values in both bird species again suggested changes in foraging location or a shift in oceanographic currents.  相似文献

Water deficit and high temperature often occur simultaneously, but their effects on plants are usually investigated separately. The aim of this study was to test how interactions between water stress and nocturnal warming affect carbon allocation in the perennial grass, Leymus chinensis . Plant biomass, dry mass allocation, 14C partitioning and carbon isotope composition (δ13C) were measured. Severe and extreme water stress during nocturnal warming decreased the allocation of dry mass and 14C partitioning below ground to the roots, but moderate water stress significantly increased the below-ground allocation of dry mass and 14C, especially at the lower night temperature. The δ13C values were more positive at day/night temperatures of 30/20°C than at 30/25°C, and greater in the roots than in the leaves. By plotting the δ13C values of the leaves against the δ13C values of the roots, the slopes of regressions were steeper at low than at high night temperature, also indicating that nocturnal warming reduces carbon allocation below ground to the roots. The results suggest that nocturnal warming may weaken acclimation during water stress in this species by regulating carbon allocation between source and sink organs.  相似文献

Trophic position, and often the source of feeding of predators in food webs, can be estimated using measurements of stable isotope ratios of nitrogen and carbon in predators and their prey. Muscle samples from 60 harp seals ( Pagophilus groenlandicus ) collected during May 1995 in nearshore waters of New foundland, Canada, were analyzed for δ13C and δ15N values. These values were compared with those for 63 prey samples representing seven species generally collected near the same area. Using diet-tissue isotopic fractionation factors derived from previous studies using captive animals, we infer a greater dependence of harp seals on lower trophic-level prey during April compared with results expected from exclusive diets of Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ), Atlantic herring ( Clupea harengus ), Greenland halibut ( Reinhardtius hippoglossoides ), or northern shrimp ( Pandalus borealis ). Our mean δ15N value for harp seals is lower than previous findings for seals collected on the winter whelping patch and may be a function of interannual or seasonal differences in diet. Subadult seals (aged 1-4 yr) had significantly lower δ15N values than adults (5 + yr), suggesting that older seals were feeding at a slightly higher trophic level.  相似文献
