A disease characterized by edema, proteinuria, hypoproteinemia and hypertension was seen in late gestation in patas monkeys. The initial sign was edema of the perineum, ankles and lower trunk. The onset was abrupt, occurring 7 days or less prepartum. The affected animals were not depressed, and convulsions were not seen. In 6 of the 98 pregnancies during a 1-year period, symptoms of the disease were present. The highest incidence was manifested by primiparous animals with 3 of 36 pregnancies affected. Two of 38 second pregnancies and 1 of 24 third pregnancies were also affected. Five of the animals recovered spontaneously and were normal 14 days postpartum. Edema persisted for 30 days in one female. This animal continued to be hypertensive and had persistent mild proteinuria and hypoproteinemia. She was killed approximately 1 year postpartum due to severe renal disease. The spontaneous disease seen in patas monkeys resembled toxemia of pregnancy in humans more closely than the experimentally induced disease in other animals.  相似文献

The naturally-occurring metabolite of prostaglandin F2alpha, 15-keto prostaglandin F2alpha (15-keto PGF2alpha), elicited rapid and sustained declines in serum progesterone concentrations when administered to rhesus monkeys beginning on day 22 of normal menstrual cycles. Evidence for luteolysis of a more convincing nature was obtained in studies where a single dose of 15-keto PGF2alpha was given on day 20 of ovulatory menstrual cycles in which intramuscular injections of hCG were also given on days 18-20; serum progesterone concentrations fell precipitously in monkeys within 24 hours following intramuscular administration of 15-keto PGF2alpha. However, corpus luteum function was impaired in only 4 of 11 early pregnant monkeys when 15-keto PGF2alpha was administered on days 30 and 31 from the last menses, a time when the ovary is essential for the maintenance of pregnancy. Gestation failed in 2 additional monkeys 32 and 60 days after treatment with 15-keto PGF2alpha, but progressed in an apparently normal manner in the remaining 5 animals. Two pregnant monkeys treated with 15-keto PGF2alpha on day 42 from the last menstrual period, a time when the ovary is no longer required for gestation, continued their pregnancies uneventfully. Corpus luteum function was not impaired in 9 control monkeys which received injections of vehicle or hCG at appropriate times during the menstrual cycle or pregnancy.  相似文献

Feedback lighting provides illumination primarily during the subjective night (i.e., the photosensitive portion of the circadian cycle) in response to a given behavior. This technique has previously been used to test the nonparametric model of entrainment in nocturnal rodents. In three species (Rattus norvegicus, Mesocricetus auratus, and Mus musculus), the free-running period of the locomotor activity rhythm was similar whether the animals were exposed to continuous light or discrete light pulses occurring essentially only during the subjective night (i.e., feedback lighting). In the current experiments, feedback lighting was presented to squirrel monkeys so that light fell predominantly during the subjective night. Feedback lighting was linked to the drinking behavior in this diurnal primate so that when the animal drank, the lights went out. Despite the seemingly adverse predicament, the monkeys maintained regular circadian drinking rhythms. Furthermore, just as the period of the free-running activity rhythms of nocturnal rodents exposed to continuous light or feedback lighting were similar, the period of the drinking rhythms of the squirrel monkeys in continuous light and feedback lighting were comparable (25.6 +/- 0.1 and 25.9 +/- 0.1 hours, respectively), despite a substantial decrease in the total amount of light exposure associated with feedback lighting. The free-running period of monkeys exposed to continuous dark (24.5 +/- 0.1 hours) was significantly shorter than either of the two lighting conditions (P < 0.001). The results presented for the drinking rhythm were confirmed by examination of the temperature and activity rhythms. Therefore, discrete light pulses given predominately during the subjective night are capable of simulating the effects of continuous light on the free-running period of the circadian rhythms of a diurnal primate. The response of squirrel monkeys to feedback lighting thus lends further support for the model and suggests that the major entrainment mechanisms are similar in nocturnal rodents and diurnal primates.  相似文献

Preterm labor (PTL) affects up to 25% of human pregnancies in developing countries, but there are few therapeutic options. Based on the key role of oxytocin (OXT) in labor and parturition, OXT antagonists are a potentially useful class of drugs for PTL. Barusiban is a new selective, potent, and long-acting OXT receptor antagonist. In this study barusiban was given by continuous i.v. infusion to monkeys during the last 3 wk of pregnancy; the monkeys were also given daily doses of OXT to induce uterine contractions and simulate PTL. Barusiban effectively suppressed OXT-induced PTL-like contractions and prevented early delivery. In contrast, fenoterol (a beta2-adrenoceptor [beta2-AR] agonist used as a comparative control) did not inhibit uterine contractions in this model. Barusiban was particularly effective in maintaining low intrauterine pressure (IUP) near the end of pregnancy, which is when IUP in both OXT controls and fenoterol-treated females increased substantially. Although barusiban delayed the onset of labor, it did not prevent normal delivery. These data demonstrate the safety and efficacy of barusiban in reducing uterine contractility in response to repeated OXT challenge, and suggest that barusiban may be therapeutically effective in long-term treatment of PTL.  相似文献

The report summarizes our four year experience with the breeding of squirrel monkeys, a New World species used widely in experimental research. Breeding squirrel monkeys in captivity has hitherto been considered capricious, with success in most instances not exceeding 50%. By a combination of hand picking the animals, housing in a harem-type situation with one male to several females, and sound nutrition, a success rate of 85–91% live births to number of pregnancies has been achieved. The rate of stillbirths and abortions in the group maintained on a well-balanced diet did not exceed 10% of the total pregnancies. This compares favorably with any successful breeding program with Old World monkeys, whose reproductive physiology is relatively well understood. It is clear from our studies that adequate quantities of proteins are essential for optimum reproduction. Among the pregnant animals maintained on a diet containing about 50% of their normal requirements of protein (8% calories from a protein source), the incidence of abortions increases significantly. In this group, the rate of abortions to total pregnancies ranges from 40.5 to 61.5%. The females maintained on a protein deficient diet during pregnancy are so protein hungry that an extruded fetus is a welcome food and no time is lost in devouring all of the placenta and the fetus. This type of cannibalism has never been observed among the mothers maintained on a high protein regimen.  相似文献

The influences of ovarian hormones on food intake, taste preferences, and glucoregulation were examined in intact and ovariectomized rhesus monkeys. Intake of intact monkeys was lowest in the preovulatory stage of the cycle, when estrogen levels are elevated, and exogenous estradiol transiently suppressed food intake of ovariectomized monkeys in a dose-related manner, confirming previous observations. Progesterone treatment did not affect food intake when given alone, but it did attenuate the effect of estradiol when both hormones were given concurrently. Preferences for sweet solutions were not detectably influenced by chronic treatment with estradiol or progesterone, and compensatory responses to ingestion of sugar were unaltered by hormone treatment. Glucose tolerance tests did not reveal significant influences of ovarian hormones on glycemia, but insulin levels were elevated during periods of progesterone treatment. These results do not support the suggestion that fluctuations in caloric intake during the menstrual cycle are secondary to changes in taste preference or glucoregulation. However, possible changes in sweet preference and glucoregulation shortly after initiation of estrogen treatment, i.e., during the time of suppressed food intake, remain to be examined.  相似文献

Self-injurious behavior (SIB) occurs in about 10% of individually housed monkeys. Monkeys with SIB bite their own bodies frequently, occasionally inflicting wounds as a result. At present, there is no standard treatment for this phenomenon. We examined the effectiveness of puzzle feeders in alleviating SIB in monkeys with a veterinary record of self-inflicted wounding. Two groups of monkeys (SIB and controls) were exposed to puzzle feeders for a 6 week period. Three levels of maze difficulty were examined. All monkeys used the feeders, but manipulation was confined to a brief period immediately after the feeders were loaded each day (1000 h) and was infrequent during the later sampling periods (1100 and 1400 h). The most difficult maze yielded a slight increase in usage at 1100 h. During the puzzle feeder phase, whole body stereotypies, including pacing and rocking, were reduced substantially in all monkeys at 1000 h when feeder manipulation was at its highest. However, self-biting in the SIB group was unchanged. Some monkeys actually bit themselves while manipulating the feeder. Long-term effects on abnormal behavior were assessed by comparing behavior during the feeder phase to baseline periods and to a phase in which the monkeys were provisioned with treats placed directly into their food box. Whole body stereotypies, including pacing, were reduced during both treatment phases; however, the reduction was associated only with the 1000 h observation. Puzzle feeders were more effective than treats alone in alleviating whole body stereotypies. Self-biting was unchanged through all phases. Puzzle feeders are beneficial from the perspective of eliciting manipulation. They also yield transient reductions in whole body stereotypy, an effect that does not extend beyond the direct manipulation of the feeder. Capuchin monkeys (Sapajus spp.) in captive settings frequently manipulate and throw objects. In the wild, they may push or drop stones and sticks toward targets during inter- or intraspecific threat displays. In addition, female capuchin monkeys exhibit a broad repertoire of behaviors during their proceptive period, including facial expressions, vocalizations, stereotyped body postures, and touch-and-run behavior. This study reports stone throwing as a newly-described communicative behavior during the proceptive display of females in a group of bearded capuchin monkeys (S. libidinosus) in Serra da Capivara National Park, Brazil. During a two-year study, three females from one group were seen throwing stones at males during their proceptive phase. After this period, three other females in the same group exhibited the same behavior. Although it may be possible that this pattern is the result of several independent innovations by each female, the apparent absence of this behavior in other groups leads us to suggest that we have documented the diffusion of a new behavioral trait or tradition within this capuchin social group.  相似文献

Optimal environments for captive primates are assumed to be those which simulate certain ecological features and elicit a wide range of species-typical behavior patterns. Outdoor environments are often thought to be more suitable than indoor environments in that they provide more space and potentially higher levels of stimulation. The purpose of this study was to compare the long-term behavioral responses of several groups of animals that had been reared identically during the first two years of life and then exposed to different environments. Two groups were moved into separate “enriched” indoor pens while one group was moved to an outdoor area covering approximately 5 acres. The monkeys were observed during the first year of life and again in these different environments between the ages of 6 and 10. Although behaviorally similar during the first year of life, monkeys developed different response patterns to indoor and outdoor environments. Contrary to commonly held views, indoor monkeys were not more aggressive, nor did they show higher levels of stereotypical behavior. Instead, indoor monkeys exhibited higher levels of grooming, sexual posturing, tactile/oral exploration, and passive visual behavior than their outdoor counterparts. These differences are consistent with the reconciliation model of de Waal. Individual monkeys also showed remarkable stability in certain traits over the 5-year period. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Female bonnet monkeys were injected i.v. with 25 microliters antiserum to FSH on Days 5, 6 or 7 of the cycle: the length of the luteal phase was shortened but there was no alteration in cycle length. Proven fertile females (N = 6) were caged throughout the period of the experiment (6 cycles) with proven fertile males and treated with 25 microliters FSH antiserum on Day 7 of each of 3 successive cycles. Out of 18 cycle exposures during the treatment phase, 17 were ovulatory, but no pregnancies occurred. In the post-treatment phase, 5 monkeys became pregnant within 3 cycle exposures. These results show that it is possible to render female monkeys infertile by creating luteal insufficiency and this can be achieved repeatedly in a reproducible manner by depriving the cyclic females of FSH support on Day 7 of consecutive cycles.  相似文献

This report presents preliminary observational data on the sociosexual behavior of two newly formed groups of older (11.5 to 18.5 years of age, mean age of 15.3 years) bonnet monkeys observed over a period of 18 weeks. Qualitatively, their sexual behavior was similar to that of the younger mature bonnets. The males and females engaged in species-typical proceptive and receptive behavior patterns. The mean duration of copulations was somewhat shorter than that reported for younger mature bonnets. Decreased sexual function was recorded in males that were chronically ill. One male that copulated infrequently died of renal failure in the sixth week of study. Another male that was never observed copulating suffered from fatal diabetes mellitus. One male died apparently during coitus; autopsy findings were compatible with sudden cardiac death. The findings indicate that sexual dysfunction in aged primates can be a sign of serious illness. Sexual and agonistic behaviors for males correlated significantly, a finding reported in studies of rhesus macaques, which are typically a more aggressive macaque subspecies. Low sexual behavior during the first six-week period in Group A was correlated with a high amount of grooming. Possibly, increased grooming by females serves as a reactive behavior under conditions which do not allow sexual outlet.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Evidence in support of and contrary to the hypothesisthat rhesus monkeys possess a sexual pheromonal system is presentedand discussed. New evidence demonstrates that solicitationsof females given estradiol are more attractive to males in partbecause the females allow males to mount much more frequentlyonly when the females have initiated the sexual interaction.In addition, evidence is presented which demonstrates that anodorous control substance stimulates sexual activity just aswell as the purported "active component" of vaginal secretionsunder restricted conditions of evaluation. Finally, preliminaryevidence suggests the possibility that odorous products fromthe vagina, unrelated to short-chain aliphatic acids, presentqualitatively distinct cues to the male during the periovulatoryphase of the menstrual cycle. However, only sexually experiencedmales, and not young adult "virginal" males nor adult isosexually-rearedmales, selectively attended to midcycle vaginal products whenthese were placed on environmental surfaces. It is concludedthat male rhesus monkeys may utilize odorous cues from the femaleduring sexual interactions, but these cues are neither necessarynor sufficient for the coordination of fertile matings. Furthermore,olfactory communication in this species does not fit the accepteddefinition of pheromone: the odors are not specific for onespecies; the behavior elicited is not specific to sexual arousal;and volatile materials other than vaginal products can stimulatesexual activity.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of a daily injection of morphine hydrochloride on galactorrhea in male cynomolgus monkeys. Three groups of three monkeys (nine total) were used. The treatment schedule was separated into three periods: pre-treatment, treatment, and post-treatment. Each group of monkeys was subcutaneously injected daily with 1.5, 3.0, or 6.0 mg/kg (monkey weight) of morphine for 74–130 days, respectively, during the treatment period, and with saline during the pre-treatment and post-treatment periods. We then measured the prolactin (PRL) and testosterone (T) levels from weekly blood samples that were taken 20 hours after injection. No statistically significant differences in either the PRL or T level were detected throughout the treatment period. However, monkeys treated with 3.0 and 6.0 mg/kg/day showed a decrease in T level and an increase in PRL level during the early post-treatment period. Seven of the nine monkeys produced a milk-like secretion from their mammary gland (a symptom of galactorrhea) during the treatment and post-treatment periods. For several months of post-treatment period (average 6.75 months), we monitored the time-course changes in PRL and T levels in all monkeys for 10 hours after a single injection of morphine at the same dose given during the treatment period. Morphine induced a sudden increase in the PRL level (peaked within 30 minutes) and a gradual decrease in the T level (leveled off within 6.5–10 hours), and then returned to basal levels. These results indicate that morphine does not cause a long-term effect on hormonal changes and that a morphine-induced transient rise in PRL levels accompanied by a decrease in T levels can induce spontaneous galactorrhea in male cynomolgus monkeys.  相似文献

Fifty female squirrel monkeys were each immunized with 200 micrograms of a purified preparation of the 55,000 macromolecule (ZP3) from porcine zona pellucida. The fertility status of these immunized monkeys, as well as the effect of ZP3 antibodies on ovarian function, was monitored. High anti-ZP3 titers were achieved (greater than 75% binding levels as determined by radioimmunoassay) and remained high (approximately 67% binding level) for the duration of this study. Hormonal evaluations indicated initial disturbances in normal ovarian steroid secretion and function that were confirmed by laparoscopic observation and oocyte production data. Histological examination of ovaries at 6-7 mo post-injection suggested an interference in folliculogenesis. No pregnancies were observed in the immunized monkeys during this period. By 10-15 mo post-immunization, hormonal and laparoscopic data indicated that ovarian function was recovering in injected monkeys despite the continued presence of high titers to ZP3. Collectively, these results demonstrate that although immunization with ZP3 initially produces disturbances in normal ovarian function that inhibit fertility, these effects are reversible. Such findings encourage the continued intensive investigation of purified porcine zona macromolecules for immunocontraceptive purposes.  相似文献

Monkeys form expectations for outcomes based on interactions with human experimenters. Capuchins, a cooperative New World monkey species, not only anticipate receiving rewards that the experimenter indicates, but also apparently anticipate rewards based on what the experimenter has given to their partners. However, this could be due to subjects responding to either outcomes or experimenters. Here we examine whether capuchins will continue to interact with human experimenters who are occasionally unreliable. We tested 10 monkeys with a series of familiar human experimenters using an exchange task. The experimenters had never before participated in exchange studies with these monkeys, hence the monkeys learned about their behavior during the course of testing. Occasionally experimenters were unreliable, failing to give a reward after the monkey returned the token. The monkeys did recognize these interactions as different, responding much more quickly in trials following those that were nonrewarded than in other situations with the same experimenter. However, subjects did not change their preference for experimenters when given the opportunity to choose between the unreliable exchanger and another exchanger, nor did subjects learn to prefer reliable experimenters from watching other monkeys’ interactions. Instead, subjects returned the tokens to the same location from which they received it. These results indicate that capuchins may not be sensitive to isolated instances in which experimenters are unreliable, possibly because of a strong bias to returning the token to the location from which it was donated.  相似文献

We describe the development of social play behavior and assess factors influencing the development of play in infant Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana). Infant snub-nosed monkeys began to exhibit social play at 3 months of age, when they spent an average 0.89% of time engaging in this behavior (range: 0.7-1.12%). At 6 months of age, there was a significant increase in the proportion of time spent in social play, averaging 9.78% of observation time (range: 4.92-17.08%). However, from 7 to 9 months of age during the winter, social play decreased gradually before rising again from 10 months of age in the spring. Play behavior in infant snub-nosed monkeys is influenced by environmental temperature. Males were observed to play more than females, although further data on this are required. Social rank did not influence the social play of wild Sichuan snub-nosed monkey infants.  相似文献

The sexual behavior of a group of free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) was studied for 13 consecutive months in an attempt to determine whether or not sexual activity occurred year-round, and the importance of sexual attraction to rhesus monkey social organization.Estrous behavior was seen both inter-menstrually and peri-menstrually, producing a shorter mean estrous cycle length than reported by other workers. New data was gathered on the interrelationships among age, dominance rank, and sexual activity; son-mother and brothersister matings; and sexual favoritism among free-ranging rhesus monkeys.A few females who failed to conceive during the fall breeding season showed cyclic estrous behavior throughout the entire annual cycle. Hypotheses are given as to possible physiological bases for birth season sexual cycles.Several forms of inter-animal bonding, including sexual bonding, are enumerated, and their importance to rhesus monkey social organization discussed.  相似文献

This study, based on three years of mating behavior observations and 10 years of birth records, reveals that Sichuan golden monkeys in captivity displayed a marked seasonality of mating behavior and births. The peak of matings occurred around October, and births occurred in March-June. The birth peak followed the mating peak by six to seven months. This seasonal cycle of matings and births was similar to observations made in the wild, where both temperature and food resources were favorable in spring. The time delay between peaks of matings and births was the approximate length of gestation, which implies that mating behavior was concentrated during the period of conception. We suggest that the peak of births in captive Sichuan golden monkeys occurred during the time of year with the most favorable environmental conditions, and the peak of matings corresponded with the period of conception.  相似文献

The majority of studies of social learning in primates have tested subjects in isolation and investigated the effects of learning over very short periods of time. We aimed to test for social learning in two social groups of colobus monkeys, Colobus guereza kikuyuensis. Subjects were shown video footage of familiar monkeys either pushing or pulling a plastic flap to obtain a food reward, while they were given simultaneous access to the same apparatus. Action frequencies showed a significant difference between the two groups, with the pull group performing a higher proportion of pulls to pushes, compared with the push group. Copying persisted even in later sessions during which the demonstration footage was not being shown. We conclude that we successfully generated two contrasting behavioural traditions in these groups of monkeys. We do not know how long this contrast in behaviour would have persisted had we been able to continue testing for an even longer period of time, but further studies using similar designs and even longer test periods would have the power to confirm whether stable behavioural variation can be sustained between groups of monkeys, supported by social transmission.  相似文献
