To define the role of asymptomatic autoimmune thyroiditis in the cause of breast cancer, the presence of circulating thyroid autoantibodies was studied in two populations, one with a high risk of breast cancer (British women) and one with a low risk (Japanese women). Ostensibly healthy women and patients with breast cancer from both countries were studied. There was no difference in the incidence of thyroid autoantibodies between women with breast cancer and healthy women in either race. The incidence of thyroid autoantibodies in healthy British women, however, was two to three times that in healthy Japanese women. The incidence of reticulin antibodies, was considerably higher in both groups of Japanese women. No remarkable differences in the incidence of antinuclear, smooth-muscle, antimitochondrial, gastric parietal cell, or liver-kidney microsomal antibodies were found between women with breast cancer and healthy women or between the two races. Only the incidence of antinuclear antibodies was marginally higher in Japanese patients with advanced cancer. These results indicate that asymptomatic autoimmune thyroid disease is more prevalent among British than among Japanese women, but they fail to provide direct evidence that autoimmune thyroid disease is associated with breast cancer. Prospective studies of women with autoimmune thyroiditis and studies of young women from low-risk and high-risk populations are needed.  相似文献

Primary objective: To carry out a preliminary evaluation of subclinical inflammation and its genetic background in young adults.

Research design: Fifty-five healthy Japanese young adults aged 19-27 years (37 males and 18 females, mean age: 22.3 years), and 58 healthy Japanese adults aged 40 to 60 years (21 males and 37 females, mean age: 51.5 years) were included in this study.

Methods and procedures: We measured plasma high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and screened for the C677T polymorphism of the 5-10 methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR), which is considered a genetic risk factor for atherosclerosis, by HinfI digestion.

Main outcomes and results: Hs-CRP levels of the young adult group were significantly lower than the levels of the middle aged group (0.014±0.030 mg/dl vs. 0.031±0.040 mg/dl, p=0.005). The levels were significantly higher in males than in females (0.028±0.019 mg/dl vs. 0.013±0.010 mg/dl, p=0.008) among young adults. Furthermore, we evaluated the relationship of the C677T genotype and hs-CRP values, but found no association between them.

Conclusions: Although the sample size is limited, our preliminary study demonstrated the profiles of hs-CRP in Japanese young adults. Further investigation will be needed to establish the guidelines for customized school health education using sensitive laboratory and genetic markers.  相似文献

The circulating blood volume has been measured in 65 healthy Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) with the dye T-1824 (Evans blue). The values obtained were 83 ± 13 ml/kg in females, and 85 ± 12 ml/kg in females, almost the same as the figures reported in man.Sex difference of blood volume has been reported to be present in man, but from the data obtained here no significant difference was found in the Japanese monkey.In young monkeys aged from 1 to 5.5 years, the blood volume was 77 ± 5 ml/kg in males, and 78 ± 4 ml/kg in females. The blood volume of the monkey was found to increase with age; a significant difference was demonstrated between adult males and young males.  相似文献

It was previously shown that there is seasonality in the amount of dietary carbohydrate not absorbed from the intestine after breakfast, the amount of carbohydrate in winter being significantly larger than that in autumn in young Japanese subjects. In order to investigate this phenomenon further, the experiment was repeated on 22 elderly Japanese female subjects (61–78 yrs of age) during the four seasons of the year. The amount of unabsorbed dietary carbohydrate by the breath hydrogen test, which measures the amount of hydrogen in exhaled air, was then esitmated. A 6 g solution of lactosucrose, an indigestible trisaccharide, was used for comparison. Two groups of subjects, 16 subjects in Osaka and 6 subjects in Nagano, were studied in the summer (July to August) and autumn (October to November) of 2005 and the winter (January to February) and spring (April to May) of 2006. The following results were found using the pooled data of the total of 22 subjects. With regard to the amount of breath hydrogen excretion of the lactosucrose solution, there was no significant difference between the four seasons. There was a significant seasonal change in the efficiency of dietary carbohydrate absorption from the intestine after breakfast. The percentage of total carbohydrate that was not absorbed was lowest in the spring and highest in the winter. A comparison of the results from studies on the elderly and young subjects revealed the percentage of total carbohydrate that was not absorbed in the elderly was significantly lower than in the young in the winter, spring, and summer. These results indicate that there is seasonal variation in the efficiency of dietary carbohydrate absorption from the intestine among elderly female Japanese subjects as well as young female Japanese subjects. They also suggest that the efficiency of dietary carbohydrate absorption from the intestine after breakfast is retained in these naturally active and healthy elderly subjects.  相似文献

The relationships between five classes of Japanese people (i.e., 96 centenarians, 96 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, 96 Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, 96 type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients, and 96 healthy non-obese young males) and their mitochondrial single nucleotide polymorphism (mtSNP) frequencies at individual mtDNA positions of the entire mitochondrial genome were examined using the radial basis function (RBF) network and the modified method. New findings of mitochondrial haplogroups were obtained for individual classes. The five classes of people were associated with the following haplogroups: Japanese centenarians-M7b2, D4b2a, and B5b; Japanese AD patients-G2a, B4cl, and N9b1; Japanese PD patients-M7b2, B4e, and B5b; Japanese T2D patients-B5b, M8al, G, D4, and F1; and Japanese healthy non-obese young males-D4g and D4b1b. From the points of common haplogroups among the five classes, the cente- narians have the common haplogroups M7b2 and B5b with the PD patients and common haplogroup B5b with the T2D patients. In addition, the 112 Japanese semi-supercentenarians (over 105 years old) recently reported were also examined by the method proposed. The results obtained were the haplogroups D4a, B4c1a, M7b2, F1, M1, and B5b. These results are different from the previously reported haplogroup classifications. As the proposed analysis method can predict a person's mtSNP constitution and the probabilities of becoming a centenarian, AD patient, PD patient, or T2D patient, it may be useful in initial diagnosis of various diseases.  相似文献

Although several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of the vasopressin analog DDAVP in enhancing human memory, no previous study has reported the dose-response relationship of DDAVP to memory in healthy young adults. The present study was undertaken to explore the dose-response curve for DDAVP on recall of implicational sentences. Five doses of DDAVP (0, 5, 15, 30, and 60 micrograms) were administered intranasally to healthy young adult male volunteers. Results demonstrated a facilitation in cued recall after treatment with the 60-micrograms dose and a general impairment in recall after treatment with the 15-micrograms dose. These effects were independent of subject's weight, vocabulary ability, and concentration of salivary cortisol.  相似文献

The relationships between Japanese Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients and their mitochondrial single nucleotide polymorphism (mtSNP) frequencies at individual mtDNA positions of the entire mitochondrial genome are described using the radial basis function (RBF) network and the modified method. Japanese AD patients are associated with the haplogroups G2a, B4c1, and N9b1. In addition, to compare mitochondrial haplogroups of the AD patients with those of other classes of Japanese people, the relationships between four classes of Japanese people (i.e., Japanese centenarians, Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients, type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients, and non-obese young males) and their mtSNPs are also described. The four classes of people are associated with following haplogroups: Japanese centenarians—M7b2, D4b2a, and B5b; Japanese PD patients—M7b2, B4e, and B5b; Japanese T2D patients—B5b, M8a1, G, D4, and F1; and Japanese healthy non-obese young males—D4g and D4b1b. The haplogroups of the AD patients are therefore different from those of the other four classes of Japanese people. As the analysis method described in this article can predict a person’s mtSNP constitution and the probabilities of becoming an AD patient, centenarian, PD patient, or T2D patient, it may be useful in initial diagnosis of various diseases.  相似文献

The immediate effects of female partner preference on male mating behaviors and its potential influence on male reproductive success and conception in the Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) were analyzed. Although male dominance interactions probably led to low-ranking males having more single-day consortships and high-ranking males more multi-day consortships, dominant males were unable to prevent females from mating with preferred subordinate males. Ultimately, there was no marked difference in the number of estimated offspring sired. Females chose not to mate with certain males and actively mated with others, suggesting that female partner preferences do affect conception. Evidence for this was found in paternity estimates, which reflected observed preferences for particular middle-ranking young adult males.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to test whether the electromagnetic field emitted by standard GSM mobile phones results in changes in heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) of 35 healthy young male and female subjects. Two parallel signals, electrocardiogram and infrared surface plethysmogram were recorded and compared to test their validity for the analysis. Plethysmographic recording is proved to be a fast and reliable method for HRV measurements. In the radiofrequency (RF) exposure study, there was no significant difference in the values of HR and HRV between the RF and the sham groups. Our preliminary study demonstrates that, in our experimental conditions, RF fields emitted by cellular phones do not cause observable effects on the regulation of heart rate of healthy, young adults.  相似文献

The effects of a wide variety of social, economic and demographic factors on age-specific first marriage and live birth rates in 46 Japanese prefectures were analyzed using stepwise regression analysis for 1970 and again for 1975 after classification of those twenty-two factors by factor analysis. The principal results were as follows: (1) high employment (high income) and social mobility caused by industrialization had a strongly positive influence on the first marriage and birth rates for young females, (2) rural and urban residence factors had positive effects on the marriage and birth rates for young males and females, respectively, (3) old age factor had an inverse effect on the marriage rates for both males and females over a wide range of ages, and (4) young age factor promoted the birth rate for young and middle-aged females. The characteristics of the first marriage and live birth rates in Japan were discussed in the light of these findings.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of an acute dose of DDAVP on speed and consistency of planning and execution of simple and complex movements in healthy young adults. A simple reaction time task (SRT), a simple movement task (SMT), and a complex movement task (CMT) were performed with and without a 0.6 ml intranasal dose (60 micrograms) of DDAVP. Results indicated DDAVP-treated individuals planned and executed CMT and SRT tasks faster and more consistently than did placebo-treated subjects. There were nonsignificant DDAVP effects on speed and variability of both RT and MT processes involved in the SMT.  相似文献

Characteristic patterns of changes in pulmonary diffusing capacity (DL) at rest and during exercise were investigated and characteristics of normal DL values concerned on sex, age, and ethnic groups were examined by viewing our studies and other reports. The relation of DL and pulmonary capillary blood volume (Vc) was represented as a logarithmic regression at rest and as a linear regression during exercise. The curve relation at rest is considered to show that the increase in Vc mainly reflects the process of transport from pulmonary capillary recruitment to pulmonary capillary dilation. The increasing rate of DL was not decreased during exercise, which seemed to be due to an increase in pulmonary blood flow accompanying exercise. The linear regression was also found between DL and oxygen intake during exercise and the slope was always constant among individuals and among subject groups. The general results concerned with sex difference in Japanese or ethnic difference between Japanese and Caucasians in both sexes could show that DL per stature was greater in males or Caucasians than in females or Japanese in young adults, however, the sex or ethnic difference disappeared in middle or old aged group. DL per alveolar volume which showed no sex or ethnic difference in young adults, was greater in middle or old aged group of females or Japanese than in that of males or Caucasians.  相似文献

Female mate choice is responsible for the evolution of male secondary sexual ornaments. If male ornamental traits reflect indirect, genetic benefits and/or direct, material benefits to females, choosy females may benefit from their choice, indirectly and/or directly. We examined a breeding population of Japanese barn swallows Hirundo rustica gutturalis to determine whether male tail streamer length reflected indirect and/or direct benefits to females. There was no significant positive relationship between male streamer length and the number of extra-pair young (EPY) sired, suggesting that male tail streamers are not a signal of indirect benefits (i.e. good genes theory). In addition, we found no evidence that males with longer streamers fed their offspring more frequently or sired more within-pair young (WPY). The result indicates that male streamer length probably does not act as a signal of direct benefits. Our finding that the length of tail streamers in Japanese barn swallows plays no role in sexual selection is not consistent with studies on European subspecies, but is consistent with studies on North American subspecies where sexual selection on tail streamer is weak. The present study supports the recent suggestion that the pattern of sexual selection on tail streamer length in barn swallows varies geographically. Instead of tail length, males in better condition sired more EPY and WPY. Males in better condition, however, did not feed their nestling more frequently. These results indicate that females gain indirect benefits but not direct benefits, in terms of feeding of young, on choosing social mates.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that altered hemodynamic responses to postural changes are associated with aging, cardiovascular responses to head-up tilt (HUT) and head-down tilt (HDT) were examined in 12 healthy young (average age, 24.6 +/- 1.7 years) and 12 healthy elderly (average age, 68.6 +/- 2.2 years) men. Subjects were passively tilted from supine to 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees HUT and HDT. Responses to these perturbations were determined 5 min after tilting with measures of heart rate (HR), blood pressure (SBP, DBP), and echocardiographically determined left ventricular diameter in systole and diastole (LVIDs, LVIDd). In HUT there were no significant age effects. In both young and elderly, SBP decreased significantly (p less than 0.05), and DBP and HR increased significantly. Ejection fraction (EF), mean arterial blood pressure (MABP), and rate-pressure product (RPP) were unchanged in both groups. In HDT, the hemodynamic responses of the young and elderly were in opposite directions and significant age effects were found for SBP, DBP, HR, LVIDs, EF, MABP, and RPP. In HDT, the young appear to increase cardiac output primarily due to an increase in EF and end-diastolic volume (LVIDd), while HR is unchanged and SBP is decreased. MABP is unchanged, suggesting a small decrease in total peripheral resistance. The elderly may increase cardiac output slightly, owing to an increase in LVIDd with no change in EF, and a large increase in HR. Theaflavins are reddish-colored polyphenols in black tea. To test the efficacy of theaflavin administration on body fat and muscle, we performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study and investigated the effect of theaflavins administration on the body composition using of healthy subjects. In this study, 30 male and female Japanese were enrolled and participants were randomly allocated to receive placebo, theaflavin (50 or 100 mg/day), or catechin (400 mg/ml) for 10 weeks. The effects were evaluated using body weight, body fat percentage, subcutaneous fat percentage, and skeletal muscle percentage. Theaflavin administration significantly improved body fat percentage, subcutaneous fat percentage, and skeletal muscle percentage when compared to with the placebo. In contrast, there was no significant difference in all measured outcomes between the catechin and the placebo groups. The results indicate that oral administration of theaflavin had a beneficial effect on body fat and muscle in healthy individuals.  相似文献

Thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) is an anaphylatoxin-inactivating enzyme generated by proteolytic cleavage of its zymogen, and is the same enzyme as that first designated by our group as procarboxypeptidase R (proCPR). TAFI in plasma is presumed to influence vascular disease in its role as a fibrinolysis inhibitor. The activity of TAFI is strongly influenced by genetic polymorphism, especially at amino acids Thr/Ala-147 and Thr/Ile-325. In this study, we analyzed 202 healthy controls who were not on any medication, had no unusual medical history and whose blood data were normal. In a previous report, we established an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) specific for non-activated TAFI (proCPR), and investigated levels of unactivated TAFI as an estimate of anti-fibrinolytic capacity. In this study, we determined normal Japanese TAFI levels for each age, sex, and genetic polymorphism of Thr/Ala-147 and Thr/Ile-325, and also showed that the TAFI level in young adult women is lower than in aged women.  相似文献
