The daily food consumption of 26 California sea lions at the Harderwijk Marine Mammal Park was recorded. Average annual food consumption of males increased with age to stabilize at approximately 4,000 kg/year by the age of 10 years. Females showed a rapid increase in average annual food consumption until they were 3 years old. Thereafter, females housed outdoors averaged 1,800 kg/year, whereas those housed indoors ate approximately 1,400 kg/year. Between the ages of 4 and 7 years, the food intake of males began to fluctuate seasonally, decreasing between May and August. The low food intake in summer was associated with an increase in aggressive behavior. Seasonal fluctuation in the food intake of non‐reproductive females was negligible. Between the ages of 6 and 8 years, many females began to reproduce successfully. Pups were born in May and June. The females' food intake decreased approximately 3 days before birth and ceased the next day. Feeding resumed the day after birth, and by 2 days after birth, it had usually returned to normal. On average, female intake increased in the year of conception, the year of birth, during which the pup was suckled for 6 months, and the following calendar year, during which the pup was weaned. Pups began to eat fish at approximately 11 months of age. When forcefed, they were fully weaned within 2 to 23 days. Male weight and body length increased until approximately 20 years of age. Females increased in body length until 6 years and in weight until approximately 13 years of age. The relationship between standard body length and body weight is given. Objective: The longitudinal relationship between the consumption of energy‐dense snack (EDS) foods and relative weight change during adolescence is uncertain. Using data from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Growth and Development Study, the current analysis was undertaken to examine the longitudinal relationship of EDS food intake with relative weight status and percentage body fat and to examine how EDS food consumption is related to television viewing. Research Methods and Procedures: One hundred ninety‐six nonobese premenarcheal girls 8 to 12 years old were enrolled between 1990 and 1993 and followed until 4 years after menarche. At each annual follow‐up visit, data were collected on percentage body fat (%BF), BMI z score, and dietary intake. Categories of EDS foods considered were baked goods, ice cream, chips, sugar‐sweetened soda, and candy. Results: At study entry, girls had a mean ± SD BMI z score of ?0.27 ± 0.89, consumed 2.3 ± 1.7 servings of EDS foods per day, and consumed 15.7 ± 8.1% of daily calories from EDS foods. Linear mixed effects modeling indicated no relationship between BMI z score or %BF and total EDS food consumption. Soda was the only EDS food that was significantly related to BMI z score over the 10‐year study period, but it was not related to %BF. In addition, a significant, positive relationship was observed between EDS food consumption and television viewing. Discussion: In this cohort of initially nonobese girls, overall EDS food consumption does not seem to influence weight status or fatness change over the adolescent period.  相似文献

The dietary intake of platinum and gold by 84 small children, 42 boys and 42 girls at the age of 14 to 83 months, with different food consumption behaviour living in urban and rural areas of Germany was measured by the duplicate method with a seven day sampling period from May to September 1998. The levels in the food duplicates were in the range of < 0.01 to 450 ng Pt/kg (dry weight) (median: 22) and < 0.14 to 28 microg Au/kg (dry weight) (median: 0.645). Related to the body weight, Pt was in the range of < 0.81 to 32 ng/(kg (body weight) x week) (median: 2.3) and Au was < 0.015 to 2.6 microg/(kg (body weight) x week) (median: 0.068). Children consuming exclusively products from the super market showed slightly higher Pt concentrations in the food duplicates and a higher dietary intake per body weight than children with food consumption including products from the family owned vegetable gardens or the surrounding area and/or products from domestic animals of the surrounding area. No influence of the food consumption behaviour was found for the concentrations in the food duplicates or the dietary intake of Au.  相似文献

This study tested whether children's eating behavior and parental feeding prompts during a laboratory test meal differ among children born at high risk (HR) or low risk (LR) for obesity and are associated with excess child weight gain. At 4 years of age, 32 HR children (mean maternal prepregnancy BMI = 30.4 kg/m2) and 29 LR children (maternal BMI = 19.6 kg/m2) consumed a test meal in which their eating behavior was assessed, including rate of caloric consumption, mouthfuls/min, and requests for food. Parental prompts for the child to eat also were measured at year 4, and child body composition was measured at ages 4 and 6 years. T‐tests, and logistic and multiple regression analyses tested study aims. Results indicated that HR and LR children did not differ in eating rate or parental feeding prompts. Greater maternal BMI, child mouthfuls of food/min, and total caloric intake/min during the test meal predicted an increased risk of being overweight or obese at age 6, whereas greater active mealtime was associated with a reduced risk of being overweight or obese. Regression analyses indicated that only mouthfuls of food/min predicted changes in BMI from 4 to 6 years, and mouthfuls of food/min and gender predicted 2‐year changes in sum of skinfolds and total body fat. Thus, a rapid eating style, characterized by increased mouthfuls of food/min, may be a behavioral marker for the development of childhood obesity.  相似文献

Energy pathways of a natural brown trout Salmo trutta population were constructed. The main subjects taken into account were: the biomass, calorific values and production of the population, natural mortality and annual yield, energy intake, calorific values and composition of the food, efficiency of food absorption, spawning and migration of young trout. The specific energy value of trout increased with increasing weight of the fish. An energy decrease of almost 50% was demonstrated for the spawning trout of both sexes, and the calorific values prior to spawning were not reached before the next summer. Energy intake was estimated to 6.87, 10.31, 8.42 and 9.15 kcal m−2 lake surface for the years 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972 respectively. Although a great number of food items were found in the trout stomachs, the four groups Gammarus lacustris, Lepidurus arcticus , Trichoptera and Chironomidae accounted for 2/3 of the total consumption. The efficiency of food absorption varied between 42 and 53%. The mean age of trout entering the lake from the nursery streams was ca. 3 yr. The annual amount of this immigration was estimated to be 0.28 and 0.24 kcal m−2 lake surface for 1969 and 1970 respectively. Annual production of trout in the take was estimated to be 1.46 and 2.66 kcal m−2 respectively for the same years. For both these years balance was found between biomass at the beginning of the year plus immigration of young and total production, minus catch by man, natural mortality and spawning on the one hand and biomass at the end of the year on the other hand.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion of the zebra musselDreissena polymorpha from 3 sites in lakes were estimated regularly over the course of 1 1/2 years at ambient temperature. They showed a pronounced annual cycle, when expressed in absolute terms (at standard shell length) and in weight specific terms (at standard tissue weight). The atomic ratio of oxygen consumed to ammonia-N released (O/N ratio) was lowest in late summer at all sites (10 to 20) and highest during winter and spring (50 to > 100). The mean body weight exponent pooled from these sites was 0.78 (95% confidence interval±0.07) for the oxygen consumption rate and 0.80 (confidence interval±0.10) for the ammonia excretion rate. Both oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion were significantly correlated with the water temperature at the 2 shallow water sites, where temperature variation was most pronounced. Correlation with seston content or gonad volume were insignificant at these sites. The quotient of filtration capacity to oxygen consumption rate was about 3 times higher at the site with the poorest food conditions compared to the other sites. Net growth efficiency was highly variable; its annual average was 35 to 40 per cent and independent of locality and animal size.  相似文献

We recently reported that intracerebroventricular infusions of ANG II decreased food intake and increased energy expenditure in young rats. The aim of the present study was to determine if intracerebroventricular ANG II has similar effects in adult rats. The time course of the effect was also investigated with the idea that at earlier time points, a potential role for increased hypothalamic expression of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the anorexia could be established. Finally, the contribution of ANG II-induced water drinking to the decrease in food intake was directly investigated. Rats received intracerebroventricular saline or ANG II using osmotic minipumps. Food intake, water intake, and body weight were measured daily. Experiments were terminated 2, 5, or 11 days after the beginning of the infusions. ANG II (approximately 32 ng.kg(-1).min(-1)) produced a transient decrease in food intake that lasted for 4-5 days although body weight continued to be decreased for the entire experiment most likely due to increased energy expenditure as evidenced by increased uncoupling protein-1 mRNA expression in brown adipose tissue. At 11 and 5 days, the expression of CRH mRNA was decreased. At 2 days, CRH expression was not suppressed even though body weight was decreased. The decrease in food intake and body weight was identical whether or not rats were allowed to increase water consumption. These data suggest that in adult rats ANG II acts within the brain to affect food intake and energy expenditure in a manner that is not related to water intake.  相似文献

Objective: The objective was to investigate whether calcium intake is independently associated with body fat in peripubertal girls. Research Methods and Procedures: A total of 45 healthy premenarcheal girls (initially 10.5 ± 0.6 years of age) completed a 2‐year prospective observational study. Percent body fat and trunk fat (by DXA), height, weight, maturational stage, and eating attitudes (children's Eating Attitudes Test [EAT]) were measured at baseline and at 1 and 2 years. Physical activity (by questionnaire) and calcium intake (by calcium‐specific food frequency questionnaire and 3‐day food records) were assessed at 6‐month intervals. Results: Girls with 2‐year mean calcium intake below and above the median had similar age, height, lean mass, and maturational stage at baseline, but girls below the median had significantly higher baseline percentage body fat (29.3 ± 10.3% vs. 22.0 ± 6.8%, p < 0.01) and trunk fat (24.2 ± 10.6% vs. 15.8 ± 6.8%, p < 0.01). However, differences were no longer significant when covariates (most notably children's EAT dieting score) were considered. Regression analysis revealed that dieting score was a consistent positive predictor of percentage body and trunk fat at all cross‐sectional time‐points, accounting for >20% of the variance, but did not predict 2‐year change in percentage fat. Calcium intake did not enter longitudinal regression equations for 2‐year change in percentage fat. Discussion: In this group of girls, an inverse cross‐sectional association between calcium intake and body fat appeared to result from avoidance of foods high in calcium by girls who were concerned about their body weight or shape. Calcium intake was not associated with change in fat over time.  相似文献

A bioenergetics model was used to estimate daily food consumption and growth of benthic whitefish Coregonus lavaretus (L.) of age groups 1+ to 10+, in oligotrophic Lake Kilpisjärvi, northern Finnish Lapland. Fish and zooplankton samples and water temperature data were collected twice per month from February to December 1993. Simulation results indicated wide seasonal variations in consumption and growth rates. Growth was in general slow; especially in age-group 6 the net increase in weight was slight. The fit of the model to the weight data was good, and the model was able to follow even rapid seasonal variations in the weight. There were clear changes in the diet during the year. In March, when the food intake was reduced, copepods, mainly adult calanoids, formed the bulk of the food consumed. The most intensive consumption period lasted from June to late September. Chironomid pupae and planktonic cladocerans were the major summer food items. The largest individuals fed mainly on molluscs during summer. Zooplankton survey and consumption estimates did not show directly that the population density of copepodids and adults of Eudiaptomus graciloides were affected by whitefish predation although their population density decreased in spring. Nauplii, showing the maximum population density in April, were not consumed. The role of copepod consumption in the timing of Diphyllobothrium ditremum plerocercoid transmission to whitefish was also discussed. The increased copepod consumption rate during winter results in high energy intake but also an increased risk of food transmitted parasite infection.  相似文献

The body size of adult Cook Islanders on Rarotonga for the years 1952, 1966 and 1996 has been increasing. The rate of increase in stature of women aged 20-39 years was 0.5cm per decade across the period 1952-1966, and 0.8cm per decade for the period 1966-1996. The rate of increase of weight in the 20-29 years age group was 0.6kg per decade in period 1, and 7.3kg per decade in period 2. In the age group 30-39 years, the rates were 3.2kg per decade and 5.1kg per decade respectively. Changing food availability for the period 1961-2000 is used to compare estimates of dietary energy availability with estimates of physiological energy requirements. There has been reduced availability of traditional staples, a likely reduction in consumption of fish, increased consumption of meat, and a decline in the availability of dietary fats and oils. Daily per capita energy intakes in 1952 and 1966 greatly exceed an hypothetical physiological maximum value for energy expenditure, suggesting a large positive energy balance in 1952 and an even greater one in 1966, both predisposing to weight gain. Although daily per capita energy availability in 1996 is similar to the hypothetical physiological maximum value for energy expenditure, it exceeds the measured level of energy expenditure at that time. It is speculated that excessive energy intake relative to requirement is more likely to predispose to positive energy balance and weight gain than decline in energy expenditure, although to a lower extent than in 1966 and 1952.  相似文献

One hundred and one Angus cows (average weight 614 kg) and their bull calves (average weight 213 kg) grazing improved summer pastures were used to determine cow and calf intake of liquid supplement, and its effect on forage intake and performance. Forty-seven pairs had access to a 410 g CP/kg DM molasses-based liquid supplement in an open feeder and 54 pairs were not supplemented. The study was conducted in southwestern Montana from July 28 to October 3, 1997. Cows consumed significantly more supplement (0.3 kg/day) than calves (0.1 kg/day) but both consumed 0.5 g/kg bodyweight per day. Supplemented cows gained 0.12 kg/day more (p<0.05) than unsupplemented cows; however, there was no difference (p>0.10) in body condition score change. Average daily gain by supplemented calves was 30% greater (p<0.01) than average daily gain by unsupplemented calves. Forage intake (g/kg body weight) by both supplemented cows and calves was 64% greater (p<0.01) than forage intake by unsupplemented cows and calves. There was no difference (p>0.10) in milk intake between supplemented and unsupplemented calves. There was no difference (p>0.10) in time spent at the supplement feeder between cows and calves, averaging 5.0 min/day. Time at the feeder was lowest for 7-year-old cows, intermediate for 6- and 8-year-old cows, and highest for 9-year-old cows (p<0.10). There was no difference (p>0.10) in supplement feeding bouts/day between age groups of cows. Calf liquid supplement intake (g/kg body weight) and time spent at the supplement feeder were similar to intake and time spent at the feeder by cows. Liquid supplementation increased forage intake and average daily gain by cows and calves grazing improved forages in late summer. The cost for additional weight gained by the supplemented calves was US$ 0.33/kg and October cattle prices in Montana were US$ 1.64/kg. Liquid supplementation was cost effective under the conditions of this study.  相似文献

The present study was to investigate the effects of diltiazem, a ghrelin receptor agonist, on food intake and gastrointestinal functions in rats. Rats were intragastrically administered with diltiazem solution (daily 16 mg/kg, 30 mg/kg or 80 mg/kg, 30 d), and the rats with saline as control. To detect the effects of diltiazem on food intake and body weight, the average daily food intake and body weight were recorded, and the serum metabolic hormones of plasma growth hormone (GH) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) were tested by radioimmunoassay. By means of the spectrophotometer and the modified Mett's method, the effects of diltiazem on rat's gastrointestinal function and pepsin activity were tested, respectively. In addition, the gastric juice's acidity of rats was detected by titration and the secretion amount was calculated. The results showed that the food intake and body weight were maximally promoted by diltiazem at the dose of 30 mg/kg daily (30 d). The average daily food intake and body weight were significantly increased, and the serum concentrations of GH and NPY were also remarkably increased in diltiazem-treated groups compared with those in control group. The results also showed that the gastric emptying rate, gastric acid secretion and the activity of pepsin were significantly increased in diltiazem-treated group compared with those in control group. These results suggest that diltiazem induces enhancement of eating, in the same time, it can also stimulate the gastrointestinal function and regulate growth of rat.  相似文献

The ability of amylin to reduce acute food intake in rodents is well established. Longer-term administration in rats (up to 24 days) shows a concomitant reduction in body weight, suggesting energy intake plays a significant role in mediating amylin-induced weight loss. The current set of experiments further explores the long-term effects of amylin (4-11 wk) on food preference, energy expenditure, and body weight and composition. Furthermore, we describe the acute effect of amylin on locomotor activity and kaolin consumption to test for possible nonhomeostatic mechanisms that could affect food intake. Four-week subcutaneous amylin infusion of high-fat fed rats (3-300 microg.kg(-1).day(-1)) dose dependently reduced food intake and body weight gain (ED(50) for body weight gain = 16.5 microg.kg(-1).day(-1)). The effect of amylin on body weight gain was durable for up to 11 wks and was associated with a specific loss of fat mass and increased metabolic rate. The body weight of rats withdrawn from amylin (100 microg.kg(-1).day(-1)) after 4 wks of infusion returned to control levels 2 wks after treatment cessation, but did not rebound above control levels. When self-selecting calories from a low- or high-fat diet during 11 wks of infusion, amylin-treated rats (300 microg.kg(-1).day(-1)) consistently chose a larger percentage of calories from the low-fat diet vs. controls. Amylin acutely had no effect on locomotor activity or kaolin consumption at doses that decreased food intake. These results demonstrate pharmacological actions of amylin in long-term body weight regulation in part through appetitive-related mechanisms and possibly via changes in food preference and energy expenditure.  相似文献

Prevention of obesity and increase in longevity in obesity-prone rodents can be achieved by long-term moderate dietary restriction. In order to examine the likelihood that caloric restriction could have similar salutary effects in humans, rhesus monkeys, after reaching mature adult stature, were placed on a protocol to clamp or stabilize body weight by weekly caloric adjustment Further weight gain was prevented by this caloric titration procedure, and thus middle-age onset obesity, which is very common in this species, was prevented. The present study analyzed daily food intake for six weight-clamped monkeys and six ad libitum fed age-matched animals over a 3- year period, ages 18.5 to 21.5 years. After approximately 9 years of caloric restriction the daily calorie load to maintain stable adult body weight proved to be 40% less than the amount ingested by ad libitum fed animals. Calories per kg body weight did not differ significantly between the groups although the ad libitum fed animals were significantly fatter than the weight-clamped group. Prevention of obesity using this weight clamp protocol has also maintained lower insulin levels and higher glucose tolerance in the restricted animals.  相似文献

Food consumption and digestion of male and female dugongs (Dugong dugon) was examined by analyzing long-term (1979–1998) feeding records at Toba Aquarium (Japan). Throughout all captive feeding periods, dugongs consumed eelgrass (Zostera marina) and showed steady increases in feed consumption with a consistent weight gain of 42–45?kg a year. The daily consumption of male and female dugongs increased from 10–15?kg to 23–26?kg of fresh eelgrass, accounting for approximately 14 and 7% of their body weight at one and seven years old, respectively. Both dugongs had a marginal dry matter digestibility of over 90%. Food consumption varied between seasons and individuals. There were major reductions (P<0.05) in consumption by the male in November and January and by the female in August and September. The seasonal reductions in food consumption coincided with high digestibility of eelgrass.  相似文献

Heart rates, respiratory rates, body temperatures, ad libitum ‘day’ and ‘night’ food consumption and body weight changes have been examined in 15 mature Merino wethers shorn in moderate environmental conditions. All sheep showed a depression in food consumption for two days after shearing. Sheep that gained weight during the next three weeks then increased their food consumption at night by approximately 30% although the average daily consumption was only increased by 5%. Sheep that lost weight showed a depressed food consumption throughout the three week period after shearing. Marked increases in the temperature difference between ear skin and air as well as thermal tachypnoea during the warmest period of the day were recorded in all sheep 14–16 days after shearing. This indicated that the critical temperature for all sheep had decreased by about 10°C. These signs of acclimatisation appeared at similar times in all sheep, suggesting that increased resistance to body cooling developed at similar rates in weight gain and weight loss sheep and independent of the origin of body heat production. The results of the investigations are discussed in relation to the concept that the initial response to cold stress includes a depression in food intake and that the duration of this depression is a function of the cold stimulus and the strain it induces in the sheep.  相似文献

While prolactin (PRL) has been reported to increase food intake by virgin female rats, its effects on food intake by male rats are relatively unexplored. The present studies examined the possibility that PRL has sex-specific effects on food intake by rats. In the first study, intact female and male rats were given subcutaneous injections of saline vehicle or ovine (o) PRL (1.0 mg/kg) twice daily at 08:00 and 20:00 h for 10 days. Food intake, body weight, and water intake were measured daily. Results indicate that oPRL administration increased food intake by an average of 4.5 g per day in female subjects, but did not significantly alter body weight or water intake. Male rats treated with oPRL did not significantly alter their food intake, even after an additional five days of treatment. In the second study, a wide range of oPRL doses (vehicle, 0.02, 0.2, 2.0, and 20.0 mg/kg/day) were tested in gonadectomized female and male rats. The results indicate that female rats responded to increasingly larger doses of oPRL with greater increases in food intake, with a maximum increase of approximately 6. 1 g per day at a dose of 20.0 mg/kg. In contrast, male rats maintained baseline levels of intake across all oPRL doses tested. These data suggest that PRL has sex-specific effects on food intake.  相似文献

Twenty Wistar and 20 Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats were divided into two diet copper intake groups at 5 wk of age. One group was fed 18 mg Cu as cupric carbonate/kg feed and the other group 100 mg Cu/kg feed. The basal diet was formulated after the AIN-76 diet. Animals were fed their respective diets until 20 wk of age. At age 8, 14, and 20 wk rats were placed in metabolic cages and food and water consumption as well as urine output were quantitated. Systolic blood pressures were measured triweekly by the tail-cuff method. Rats fed 100 mg Cu/kg feed showed an increase in systolic pressure compared to rats fed 18 mg Cu/kg feed. The increase was more pronounced for the Wistar strain. Body weights, urine output, and feed and water consumption did not differ (p>0.05) by copper intake. Rats fed 100 mg Cu/kg feed did have greater hemoglobin levels. Heart: body and liver: body weight strain differences were apparent. This study demonstrated increased blood pressure in rats fed excess diet copper.  相似文献

Changes in food consumption and related processes have a significant impact on the flow of nitrogen in the environment. This study identifies both flows within the system and emissions to the hydrosphere and atmosphere. A case study of an average inhabitant of the city of Linköping, Sweden, covers the years 1870, 1900, 1950, and 2000 and includes changes in food consumption and processing, agricultural production, and organic waste handling practices. Emissions to the hydrosphere from organic waste handling increased from 0.57 kilograms of nitrogen per capita per year (kg N/cap per year) to 3.1 kg N/cap per year, whereas the total flow of nitrogen to waste deposits grew from a negligible amount to 1.7 kg N/cap per year. The largest flow of nitrogen during the entire period came from fodder. The input of chemical fertilizer rose gradually to a high level of 15 kg N/cap per year in the year 2000. The total load per capita disposed of to the environment decreased during these 130 years by about 30%.  相似文献

Annual variations in moult, body mass, and the plasma concentrations of luteinizing hormone, prolactin and the gonadal steroids, oestradiol and testosterone, were measured in captive White storks ( Ciconia ciconia ). Data were collected at approximately monthly intervals for 13 months on storks hatched over five successive years, the youngest ones being in their first, the oldest in their fifth, year of life.
Moulting of wing feathers occurred during the summer months, April through August. Young birds began to moult at least one month earlier, and replaced more wing feathers each year, than did three- to five-year-old birds. Body mass exhibited remarkably consistent annual cycles with minima of2–9-3-5 kg, during the summer months, and maxima of3–8-4-5 kg, during the winter months. Young males were heavier at all times of the year than young females, although this difference was gradually reduced to non-significant levels by four years of age. Luteinizing hormone, prolactin and the gonadal steroids, oestradiol and testosterone, exhibited annual cyclic changes, usually of a bi-modal nature. No major differences in hormone profiles, however, were found between any of the age groups. The phenomenon of deferred maturity in the stork does not parallel that of puberty found in many mammals.  相似文献
