The leech Calliobdella vivida (Verrill) is the vector of Trypanoplasma bullocki. At 10°C, infective-stage flagellates were first present in the leech's proboscis sheath five days after feeding. At 5°C, infective-stage flagellates were not present in the leech's proboscis sheath until 10 days after feeding, but at 20°C, flagellates were located there as early as 24 h after feeding. Infected leeches retained flagellates through three subsequent feeds on uninfected fish. When flagellates were first observed in hogchoker, Trinectes maculatus (Bloch & Schneider), they were much larger than infective stages from the leech. Average flagellate length then decreased during early acute phase, but gradually increased thereafter. Peak parasitemia was greater in a hogchoker inoculated by only one leech but held at colder temperature than in a hogchoker inoculated by 45 leeches, suggesting that temperature may be more important than inoculum in determining peak parasitemia. Cell division in the fish host is described. SEM studies of fish blood flagellates revealed a pre-oral ridge and a cytostome.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Goussia girellae n. sp. is described from the opaleye fish, Girella nigricans. Merogonic stages were observed in the apices of intestinal epithelial cells, in the lamina propria, and in extra-intestinal sites including liver, gills, and spleen. Gamonts were observed in the intestinal epithelial cells. Only unsporulated oocysts were detected in the intestine, and sporulation occurred when feces containing oocysts were incubated for 48 h in seawater at 21°C. Oocysts are elongated (24.8 × 14.7 μm) with a wall about 200 nm thick and have no residuum, micropyle, or polar granule. Sporocysts are ellipsoid (8.5 × 4.5 μm), have a thin two-layered wall approximately 30 nm thick, and consist of two valves joined by a suture. Although moribund opaleye were also infected with Gyrodactylus sp., Cryptobia sp., Cardicola sp., and epitheliocystis organisms (chlamydia), all fish were heavily infected with G. girellae and morbidity was thus attributed to the coccidium.  相似文献

Trypanosoma fallisi n. sp. is described from Bufo americanus in Ontario. The parasite was observed in 65 of 94 toads examined. The trypanosomes were pleomorphic with respect to the age of infections, being longer and broader in early infections (during spring and summer) and shorter and more slender during late summer and autumn. They ranged in size from 38–76 μm in body length and 3–8 μm in width, with a free flagellum 6–30 μm long. Epizootiological and experimental evidence suggests that this trypanosome is transmitted to the toads by the leech, Batracobdella picta. Trypanosoma fallisi is morphologically similar to T. bufophlebotomi described in Bufo boreas from California, but geographic isolation, host and vector differences as well as slight morphological differences indicate that speciation has occurred. Similar trypanosomes from Bufo americanus (which were identified as T. bufophlebotomi) in Michigan, are probably T. fallisi. This species shares many ultrastructual features with trypanosomes of other lower vertebrates and also of mammals.  相似文献

Multiplication of Trypanosoma pacifica was common in the fish host from observations of live flagellates and Giemsa-stained blood smears. Multiplication began with the elongation of the kinetoplast, thickening of the posterior portion of the body, and appearance of a new flagellum near the kinetoplast. The new flagellum was very rigid when less than 3 microm in length, but it became flexible as it elongated. When the new flagellum was approximately 12 microm in length, cell division began and the kinetoplast also began to divide. The timing of nuclear division was variable. Generally, it did not occur until division of the kinetoplast had begun, but occasionally binucleate individuals were observed before cell or kinetoplast division was apparent. As division continued, 1 nucleus migrated past the dividing kinetoplast into the future daughter trypanosome. Finally, the kinetoplast completed division and the trypanosomes separated. Cell division was unequal, with the daughter trypanosome being smaller than the parent and with a more weakly developed undulating membrane.  相似文献

Summary

Bathypecten vulcani is considered a relict species from the Paleozoic, based on shell characteristics such as the presence of calcite prisms. To date, it is the only pectinid species reported from hydrothermal ecosystems. Histological and ultrastructural studies show that spermatogenesis is identical to that of littoral pectinids. The spermatozoon has a 2.7 μm long pyriform head and a 40 μm flagellum. The four mitochondria of the mid-piece are about 1.2 μm in diameter. The nucleus contains dense chromatin fibres and possesses a wide, shallow (0.1 μm) anterior fossa and a narrow, deeper (0.2 μm) posterior nuclear fossa. Comparison of the ultrastructural characteristics of the spermatozoon of B. vulcani with those of littoral pectinids shows that they can be used as a diagnostic feature of this species. In particular, its acrosome characters will be a useful complement to the shell characters in the study of the phylogenetic position of this species in relation to other pectinids.  相似文献

The mature spermatozoa of Buthus occitanus are threadlike in shape and divided into sperm head, middle piece, and end piece. The sperm head is corkscrew shaped anteriorly and in this region bears an unusual acrosomal complex consisting of a ring-shaped acrosomal vacuole associated with a subacrosomal filament and a perinuclear amorphous component. The subacrosomal filament extends posteriorly into a tube-like invagination of the elongated nucleus. The middle piece is characterized by elongated mitochondria which spiral around the anterior part of the flagellum in an extended collar separated from the flagellum by an extracellular cleft, termed the central flagellar tunnel. In addition to the usual 9 × 2 + 2 axonemal pattern in flagella, 9 × 2 + 1 and 9 × 2 + 3 patterns also were observed. The end piece is represented by the free flagellum. Similarities and diversities of scorpionid spermatozoa are discussed with respect to systematic relationships.  相似文献

Details of zoospore germination in Chorda tomentosa Lyngb. are outlined. Uninucleate zoospores, when released are embedded in a mucilaginous mass of carbohydrate which dissolves and the biflagellate zoospores become motile. The long anterior flagellum is composed of a highly coiled terminal region and a rigid lower section bearing mastigonemes. The rigid, short posterior flagellum lacks mastigonemes. After initial contact by the tightly coiled region of the anterior flagellum, the zoospore draws itself to the substrate by flagellar resorbtion. After deposition of 3 wall layers the germling produces a germ tube. During this time the disc-shaped chloroplast enlarges undergoing changes in shape. As the germ tubes reach ca. 15 μm they cease forward growth and swell at their tips. The majority of cytoplasm of the original zoospore moves into the tube. Just before the nucleus enters the tube, centriole replication occurs. Mitosis is presumed to take place somewhere in the germ tube so that at 24 h, 2-celled gametophytes are produced.  相似文献

Morphologic and biometric data on bloodstream stages of Trypanosoma melophagium are presented. An increasing parasitemia with 111 trypomastigote stages of T. melophagium were found in Giemsa-stained thin blood smears taken from a splenectomized, cortisone-treated sheep recently infested with Melophagus ovinus infected with T. melophagium. The arithmetic mean and standard deviation in μm of the distances between posterior end and kinetoplast were 14.7 and 2.9, from the kinetoplast to the center of the nucleus 5.1 and 1.1, and from there to the anterior end 19.5 and 1.9. The free flagellum measured 6.0 μm ± 1.6 μm. The median and the range of the central 70% of values (median ± 35%) of the nuclear index were 1.1 and 0.9–1.2 and of the kinetoplastic index 3.8 and 3.3–4.9. The same data in μm for the maximal width were 3.1 and 2.1–4.6, and for the width at the level of the nucleus 2.9 and 2.2–4.6. The larger and smaller diameters of the nucleus measured 2.6 (2.2–3.7) μm and 1.7 (1.3–1.7) μm, respectively. The corresponding kinetoplast diameters were 1.1 (0.9–1.3) μm and 0.9 (0.6–0.9) μm, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract

A trypanosomatid flagellate, Herpetomonas sp., is recorded from an adult Mythimna separata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Promastigote, paramastigote, and opisthomastigote stages measured 3.4–12 × 1.3–4.3 μm, Giemsastained, with flagella measuring 13.8–18.7 μm. A few amastigotes (3.9–8.3 × 3.7–6.7 μm) were also observed. Fourteen larvae fed with a suspension of flagellates were found later to be infected with the protozoan. No flagellate infections were found in the hymenopteran parasitoid, Apanteles ruficus (Haliday), or the hyperparasitoid, Trichomalopsis sp.  相似文献

Summary The transformation ofPhysarum polycephalum flagellates to myxamoebae is characterised by disappearance of the flagellum. This transition, from the flagellate to the myxamoeba was observed by phase contrast light microscopy and recorded by time lapse video photography to determine whether flagellates shed their flagella or they are absorbed within the cell. In addition, the kinetics of flagellum disappearance were also studied. Our observations indicate that the flagellum was absorbed within the cell; the process occurred within seconds. Flagellum resorbtion was preceded by typical morphological cell changes. The shape of the nucleus altered and its mobility within the cell decreased. It was not possible to observe the flagellum within the cell with phase contrast video recordings. Thin section electron microscopy was used to study this intracellular phenomenon. Several stages of flagellum dissolution could be identified within the cell. The two most important stages were: an axoneme surrounded by the flagellar membrane within a plasma membrane lined pocket or vacuole and the naked axoneme without its membrane, free within the cell cytoplasm. The existence of cytoplasmic microtubules prevented identification of any further dissolution stages of the flagellum. A group of microtubules adjacent to the flagellum but within the cytoplasm was observed in flagellates and also in those cells which possesed enveloped axonemes. The flagellum did not dissociate from the kinetosomes before resorbtion.Immunofluorescence studies with the 6-11-B-1 monoclonal antibody indicated that acetylated microtubules exist in myxamoebae after transformation from flagellates for up to 40 min. Acetylated tubulin is not limited to the centrioles in these cells.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A trichomonad flagellate, Tritrichomonas mobilensis n. sp., is described from the large intestine of the squirrel monkey, Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis. The organism has a lanceolate body 7–10.5 μm in length; a well developed undulating membrane; a stout, tubular axostyle with periaxostylar rings that terminate in a cone-shaped segment projecting from the posterior end of the cell; and a moderately wide costa. The anterior flagella are about as long as the body, and the recurrent flagellum is of the acroneme type. All its characteristics suggest that the new species belongs in the Tritrichomonas augusta type of the subfamily Tritrichomonadinae.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Oocysts of Eimeria natricis sp. n. and Eimeria sipedon sp. n. were isolated from 2 Northern Water Snakes, Natrix sipedon sipedon (Linnaeus), in Iowa. Oocysts of E. natricis were elongate, slightly ovoid, averaging in size 32.3 × 17.5 μm; sporocysts averaged 15.7 × 8.2 μm. Oocysts of E. sipedon were broadly ovoid averaging in size 18.0 × 15.9 μm; sporocysts averaged 12.0 × 7.4 μm. In both species, sporocyst residua were present, but micropyles, polar granules and oocyst residua were lacking.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Sphaeromyxa maiyai sp. n. (Myxosporidea: Myxiidae) is described from the gall bladder of the Pacific tomcod Microgadus proximus Girard, from Newport, Oregon. The plasmodial stage is discoid averaging between 1 and 2 cm. The spore averages 27.6 × 5.6 μm in breadth, with pyriform polar capsules measuring 9.3 × 3.7 μm. This study describes the sperm morphology of the mayfly Hexagenia (Pseudeatonica) albivitta (Ephemeroptera). Its spermatozoon measures approximately 30 μm of which 9 μm corresponds to the head. The head is composed of an approximately round acrosomal vesicle and a cylindrical nucleus. The nucleus has two concavities, one in the anterior tip, where the acrosomal vesicle is inserted and a deeper one at its base, where the flagellum components are inserted. The flagellum is composed of an axoneme, a mitochondrion and a dense rod adjacent to the mitochondrion. A centriolar adjunct is also observed surrounding the axoneme in the initial portion of the flagellum and extends along the flagellum for at least 2 μm, surrounding the axoneme in a half‐moon shape. The axoneme is the longest component of the flagellum, and it follows the 9+9+0 pattern, with no central pair of microtubules. At the posterior region of the flagellum, the mitochondrion has a dumb‐bell shape in cross sections that, together with the rectangular mitochondrial‐associated rod, is responsible for the flattened shape of the flagellum. An internal membrane is observed surrounding both mitochondrion and its associated structure.  相似文献

Cryothecomonas longipes Schnepf and Kühn sp. nov. is a colourless biflagellate organism, 9–14 μm long and 7–9 μm wide when not filled with food vacuoles. It was detected in the North Sea, feeding with pseudopodia on diatoms. It penetrates the host shell, while the main body of the flagellate remains outside the frustule. Cells are covered with a multilayered theca. The pseudopodium protrudes through a preformed slit in the theca. Each flagellum also emerges through a pit in which the theca forms a funnel of complex structure that girdles each flagellum. The anterior flagellum is 9–15 μm long and oriented forward; the ventral flagellum, posteriorly directed, is 20–24 μm long and bears fine hairs. The flagellar roots consist of microtubules that emerge at satellites around the basal bodies and run along the flagellar pits. In addition, the ventral flagellum is accompanied by a band of six microtubules. It is proximally attached to a small fibrillar band, which interconnects the basal bodies. Cryothecomonas longipes has two or three types of extrusomes which pierce the theca when discharged. Their mode of discharge is discussed. Microbody-like vesicles containing small tubules are closely associated with older digestion vacuoles. Cryothecomonas longipes is compared with other species of the genus and a diagnosis is given. Cell structure, cell adhesion, and stalk formation have been examined by electron microscopy in the colonial flagellate, Cephalothamnium cyclopum. Each cell is obconical or spindle-shaped, pointed posteriorly and truncated anteriorly. The cell membrane is underlain by epiplasm 0.1 μm thick in the posterior region, but bands of microtubules support the anterior region which is differentiated into a flagellar pocket, oral apparatus and contractile vacuole. Each of 2 flagella, joined a short way above their bases by an interflagellar connective, has a paraxial rod and mastigonemes. One flagellum is free and is important in food gathering while the other is recurrent and lies in a shallow groove on the ventral cell surface but projects posteriorly into the stalk. The basal bodies of these flagella are bipartite structures connected by a pair of striated rootlets with accessory microtubular fibers. The oral apparatus consists of a funnel-shaped buccal cavity and cytostome. It is supported by helical and longitudinal microtubules and also has nearby striated and microtubular fibers. Possible roles of associated oral vesicles in relation to ingestion are discussed. A reticulate mitochondrion houses a massive kinetoplast which has a fibrillar substructure resembling that of dinoflagellate chromosomes. Adjacent flagellates adhere by laminate extensions of their posterior regions and attach by their recurrent flagella to a communally secreted stalk composed of finely fibrillar material. This study indicates that Cephalothamnium belongs in the order Kinetoplastida, and has many features in common with members of the family Bodonidae.  相似文献

The morphology of Trypanosoma humboldti n. sp. is described from living and stained specimens obtained from the blood of a catshark, Schroederichthys chilensis. This represents the first report of a trypanosome in fish from the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is distinguished by its size and apparent lack of pleomorphism. The presence of a leech, Branchellion ravenellii, attached to the catshark, raises the possibility that it can act as a vector. Additionally, this leech is recorded for the first time from the Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Freeze-fracture techniques reveal differences in fine structure between the anterior three flagella of Tritrichomonas foetus and its recurrent flagellum. The anterior flagella have rosettes of 9–12 intramembranous particles on both the P and E faces. The recurrent flagellum lacks rosettes but has ribbon-like arrays of particles along the length of the flagellum, which may be involved in the flagellum's attachment to the cell body. This flagellum is attached to the membrane of the cell body along a distinct groove that contains few discernible particles. Some large intramembranous particles are visible on the P face of the cell body membrane at the point where the flagellum emerges from the cell body. The randomly distributed particles on the P and E faces of the plasma membrane have a particle density of 919/μm2 and 468/μm2 respectively, and there are areas on both faces that are devoid of particles. Freeze-fracture techniques also reveal numerous fenestrations in the membrane of the Golgi complex and about 24 pores per μm2 in the nuclear. membrane.  相似文献

Spermiogenesis in Plagioscion squamosissimus occurs in cysts. It involves a gradual differentiation process of spermatids that is characterized mainly by chromatin compaction in the nucleus and formation of the flagellum, resulting in the spermatozoa, the smallest germ cells. At the end of spermiogenesis, the cysts open and release the newly formed spermatozoa into the lumen of the seminiferous tubules. The spermatozoa do not have an acrosome and are divided into head, midpiece, and tail or flagellum. The spermatozoa of P. squamosissimus are of perciform type with the flagellum parallel to the nucleus and the centrioles located outside the nuclear notch.  相似文献
