Any change in a plant that occurs following herbivory or environmental factors is an induced response. These changes include phytochemical induction, increases in physical defenses, emission of volatiles that attract predators and parasitoids of herbivores, and reduction in plant nutritional quality for herbivores, which is termed induced resistance. Induced resistance has been demonstrated ubiquitously in plants. It is one of our goals to review what is known about the induced resistance to herbivorous insects in cotton, including three resistance secondary metabolites (terpenoid, tannin, and flavonoids) that are contained at any significant levels of resistance to herbivorous insects in cotton cultivates. In many cases, the quantities or quality of secondary metabolites in plant are changed after attacked by insects. This review focuses on induced plant resistance as quantitative or qualitative enhancement of defense mechanism against insect pests, especially on the abiotic-elicitors-induced resistance in cotton plants. The abiotic-elicitor of cupric chloride, an exogenous inorganic compound, may induce the secondary metabolites accumulation and is referred to as a copperinducible elicitor (CIE). Finally, we discuss how copperinducible elicitor may be used in the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system for cotton resistance control.

Plant secondary metabolites are unique sources for pharmaceuticals, food additives, flavors, and industrially important biochemicals. Accumulation of such metabolites often occurs in plants subjected to stresses including various elicitors or signal molecules. Secondary metabolites play a major role in the adaptation of plants to the environment and in overcoming stress conditions. Environmental factors viz. temperature, humidity, light intensity, the supply of water, minerals, and CO2 influence the growth of a plant and secondary metabolite production. Drought, high salinity, and freezing temperatures are environmental conditions that cause adverse effects on the growth of plants and the productivity of crops. Plant cell culture technologies have been effective tools for both studying and producing plant secondary metabolites under in vitro conditions and for plant improvement. This brief review summarizes the influence of different abiotic factors include salt, drought, light, heavy metals, frost etc. on secondary metabolites in plants. The focus of the present review is the influence of abiotic factors on secondary metabolite production and some of important plant pharmaceuticals. Also, we describe the results of in vitro cultures and production of some important secondary metabolites obtained in our laboratory.

Being sessile, plants are subjected to a diverse array of environmental stresses during their life span. Exposure of plants to environmental stresses results in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These activated oxygen species tend to oxidize various cellular biomolecules like proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids, a process that challenges the core existence of the cell. To prevent the accumulation of these ROS and to sustain their own survival, plants have developed an intricate antioxidative defence system. The antioxidative defence system comprises various enzymatic and nonenzymatic molecules, produced to counter the adverse effect of environmental stresses. A sizable number of these molecules belong to the category of compounds called secondary metabolites. Secondary metabolites are organic compounds that are not directly involved in the growth and development of plants but perform specialized functions under a given set of conditions. Absence of secondary metabolites results in long-term impairment of the plant’s survivability. Such compounds generally include pigments, phenolics, and so on. Plant phenolic compounds such as flavonoids and lignin precursors have been reported to accumulate in response to various biotic and abiotic stresses and are regarded as crucial defence compounds that can scavenge harmful ROS. Another important category of plant metabolites, called brassinosteroids, exhibit stress regulatory and growth-promoting activity and are classified as phytohormones. Elucidation of the physiological and molecular effects of secondary metabolites and brassinosteroids have catapulted them as highly promising and environment-friendly natural substances, suitable for wider application in plant protection and crop yield promotion. The present review focuses on our current understanding of how plants respond to the generation of excessive ROS and the role of secondary metabolites and brassinosteroids in countering the adverse effects of environmental stresses.

Effect of latitude on flavonoid biosynthesis in plants
The growth conditions in different latitudes vary markedly with season, day length, light quality and temperature. Many plant species have adapted well to the distinct environments through different strategies, one of which is the production of additional secondary metabolites. Flavonoids are a widely spread group of plant secondary metabolites that are involved in many crucial functions of plants. Our understanding of the biosynthesis, occurrence and function of flavonoids has increased rapidly in recent decades. Numerous studies have been published on the influence of environmental factors on the biosynthesis of flavonoids. However, extensive long‐term studies that examine the effect of the characteristics of northern climates on flavonoid biosynthesis are still scarce. This review focuses on the current knowledge about the effect of light intensity, photoperiod and temperature on the gene–environment interaction related to flavonoid biosynthesis in plants.

Plants produce a plethora of phytochemicals including sugars, amino acids (AAs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and secondary metabolites (SMs) with different ecological functions. To attract pollinators and defenders and ensure reproductive success, plants mainly rely on VOCs, while to reward insects, plants synthesize nectar rich in sugars and AAs. Furthermore, plant SMs can play various roles. Some components are able to interact with the nervous system of insects by binding to neuron receptor proteins and thus manipulate pollinator behavior. Others, like alkaloids and phenolics, protect from nectar robbers and enhance memory and foraging efficiency, or, as in the case of flavonoids, exhibit high antioxidant activities supporting pollinator well-being. This review discusses the impact of VOCs and nectar SMs on insect behavior and pollinator health.

Species of fungal genus Trichoderma are characterized by a versatile lifestyle, high adaptability to the changing environmental conditions and the ability to establish sophisticated interactions with other organisms. Due to their ability to antagonize plant pathogens and to elicit the plant defence responses against biotic/abiotic stresses, Trichoderma spp. are commonly used as commercially biopesticides and biofertilizers. The Trichoderma success in the rhizosphere is supported by a wide arsenal of specialised metabolites (SMs) providing morphological and physiological autoregulation, self-protection and facilitating fungal communication. This review aims to explore the roles of SMs in the biology of fungi, with special emphasis on the genus Trichoderma and on how divergence in the SMs genetic structure determine Trichoderma lifestyles. Trichoderma genomes are endowed with a high number of SMs biosynthetic genes, and understanding the genetic basis of their biosynthesis is crucial for determining the role of these metabolites in Trichoderma ecophysiology and for expanding their application in crop protection. Recent advances on the characterization of the Trichoderma SMs genetic inventory driven by computational biology are discussed.

Isolating quality DNA from tissues/cells presents a variety of problems in particular when plants are used as the source material. The specific characteristics of plants like the presence of rigid polysaccharide cell wall, pigments, chemical heterogeneity of secondary metabolites found in diverse species of plants, etc., necessitate special consideration and skill during isolation procedure. Until now, numerous protocols have been published for the purpose, but none is found to be universally applicable. Various factors starting from the selection of source material to the concentration of metabolites present in the plant decide the course of the isolation procedure. The present review is an update of various methods used for plant genomic DNA isolation, and it epitomizes the various problems faced and the solutions made to contend with them during DNA isolation from plant cells.

Light spectra significantly influence plant metabolism, growth and development. Here, we review the effects of monochromatic blue, red and green light compared to those of multispectral light sources on the morpho-anatomical, photosynthetic and molecular traits of herbaceous plants. Emphasis is given to the effect of light spectra on the accumulation of secondary metabolites, which are important bioactive phytochemicals that determine the nutritional quality of vegetables. Overall, blue light may promote the accumulation of phenylpropanoid-based compounds without substantially affecting plant morpho-anatomical traits compared to the effects of white light. Red light, conversely, strongly alters plant morphology and physiology compared to that under white light without showing a consistent positive effect on secondary metabolism. Due to species-specific effects and the small shifts in the spectral band within the same color that can substantially affect plant growth and metabolism, it is conceivable that monochromatic light significantly affects not only plant photosynthetic performance but also the “quality” of plants by modulating the biosynthesis of photoprotective compounds.

Saponins are a large group of secondary metabolites occurring in significant amounts in many plant species. However, the saponin content of plants is variable and it can be influenced by the surrounding environment. The local geoclimate, seasonal changes, external conditions such as light, temperature, humidity and soil fertility, as well as cultivation techniques, affect both the quantitative amount and qualitative composition of saponins. Such variation substantially impacts on the quality and properties of wild and cultivated plants exploited for pharmaceutical, nutritional and industrial applications. This review summarizes the available data on the effects of abiotic environmental factors on saponin level in plants, especially those of considerable economic importance, highlighting current problems such as the reduction in natural plant resources, over-exploitation and destruction of wild habitats, climate shifts as well as the consequences of the growing demand for plant-derived medicinal and industrial products. The need for a theoretical basis for a reasonable harvest, attempts at the domestication of wild plant species and the development of new agricultural technologies allowing high production under optimized conditions are also discussed.

The diversity of plant natural product (PNP) molecular structures is reflected in the variety of biochemical and genetic pathways that lead to their formation and accumulation. Plant secondary metabolites are important commodities, and include fragrances, colorants, and medicines. Increasing the extractable amount of PNP through plant breeding, or more recently by means of metabolic engineering, is a priority. The prerequisite for any attempt at metabolic engineering is a detailed knowledge of the underlying biosynthetic and regulatory pathways in plants. Over the past few decades, an enormous body of information about the biochemistry and genetics of biosynthetic pathways involved in PNPs production has been generated. In this review, we focus on the three large classes of plant secondary metabolites: terpenoids (or isoprenoids), phenylpropanoids, and alkaloids. All three provide excellent examples of the tremendous efforts undertaken to boost our understanding of biosynthetic pathways, resulting in the first successes in plant metabolic engineering. We further consider what essential information is still missing, and how future research directions could help achieve the rational design of plants as chemical factories for high-value products.

Variation in plant secondary metabolite content can arise due to environmental and genetic variables. Because these metabolites are important in modifying a plant’s interaction with the environment, many studies have examined patterns of variation in plant secondary metabolites. Investigations of chemical defenses are often linked to questions about the efficacies of plant defenses and hypotheses on their evolution in different plant guilds. We performed a series of meta-analyses to examine the importance of environmental and genetic sources of variation in secondary metabolites as well as the antiherbivore properties of different classes of defense. We found both environmental and genetic variation affect secondary metabolite production, supporting continued study of the carbon-nutrient balance and growth-differentiation balance hypotheses. Defenses in woody plants are more affected by genetic variation, and herbaceous plant defenses are more influenced by environmental variation. Plant defenses in agricultural and natural systems show similar responses to manipulations, as do plants in laboratory, greenhouse, or field studies. What does such variation mean to herbivores? A comparison of biotic, physical, and chemical defenses revealed the most effective defensive strategy for a plant is biotic mutualisms with ants. Fast-growing plants are most often defended with qualitative defenses and slow-growing plants with quantitative defenses, as the plant apparency and resource availability hypotheses predict. However, we found the resource availability hypothesis provides the best explanation for the evolution of plant defenses, but the fact that there is considerable genetic and environmental variation in defenses indicates herbivores can affect plant chemistry in ecological and evolutionary time.

Plants are a nearly unlimited source of phytochemicals. The plants produce various secondary metabolites, which are useful in its interaction with the environment, various stress factors and development of resistance against pathogen attack. A wide array of external stimuli are capable of triggering changes in the plant cell which leads to a cascade of reactions, ultimately resulting in the formation and accumulation of secondary metabolites which helps the plant to overcome the stress factors. The biotic and abiotic elicitors can result in an enhancement of the secondary metabolite production. The stimuli are perceived by receptors, which then result in the activation of the secondary messengers. These then transmit the signals into the cell through the signal transduction pathways leading to gene expression and biochemical changes. There is interplay of the signaling molecules also which regulates the entire pathway. This review is oriented towards the factors, which influence signal transduction pathway(s) with special reference to polyamines, calcium, jasmonates, salicylates, nitric oxide and ethylene. The interplay of these components to elicit a defense response is discussed. Molecular aspects of disease resistance and regulation of plant secondary metabolism has also been presented.

Plant secondary metabolites (SMs) play crucial roles in plant-environment interactions and contribute greatly to human health. Global climate changes are expected to dramatically affect plant secondary metabolism, yet a systematic understanding of such influences is still lacking. Here, we employed medicinal and aromatic plants (MAAPs) as model plant taxa and performed a meta-analysis from 360 publications using 1828 paired observations to assess the responses of different SMs levels and the accompanying plant traits to elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2), elevated temperature (eT), elevated nitrogen deposition (eN) and decreased precipitation (dP). The overall results showed that phenolic and terpenoid levels generally respond positively to eCO2 but negatively to eN, while the total alkaloid concentration was increased remarkably by eN. By contrast, dP promotes the levels of all SMs, while eT exclusively exerts a positive influence on the levels of phenolic compounds. Further analysis highlighted the dependence of SM responses on different moderators such as plant functional types, climate change levels or exposure durations, mean annual temperature and mean annual precipitation. Moreover, plant phenolic and terpenoid responses to climate changes could be attributed to the variations of C/N ratio and total soluble sugar levels, while the trade-off supposition contributed to SM responses to climate changes other than eCO2. Taken together, our results predicted the distinctive SM responses to diverse climate changes in MAAPs and allowed us to define potential moderators responsible for these variations. Further, linking SM responses to C-N metabolism and growth-defence balance provided biological understandings in terms of plant secondary metabolic regulation.
