The rate of entrance of water into impaled cells of Halicystis Osterhoutii, Blinks and Blinks, has been determined directly by measurements of the rise of sap in a capillary for dilute sea waters (containing between 90 and 30 per cent sea water). The velocity constant remains reasonably constant down to 50 per cent sea water but it decreases markedly in lower concentrations.  相似文献

Transient changes in free intracellular Ca2+ concentration were monitored in the presynaptic terminal of the giant synapse of the squid, by means of the Ca2+-sensitive dye arsenazo III. Calibration experiments showed a linear relation between the amount of Ca2+ injected by iontophoresis into the terminal, and the peak size of the arsenazo light absorbance record. A light signal could be detected on tetanic stimulation of the presynaptic axon bathed in sea water containing 45 mM Ca2+. During a 1 s tetanus the light signal rose approximately linearly, even though transmitter release declined rapidly and the light signal subsequently declined with a half-time of 2-6 s. The Ca2+ transient elicited by single nerve impulses was recorded by signal averaging, and showed a time course very much slower than the duration of transmitter release.  相似文献

Studies on hydrocarbon composition of Black Sea musselsMytilus galloprovincialis sampled from different habitats indicate that the quantity and composition of hydrocarbons distributed in the molluscs depend on season and sea-water quality. The data obtained under experimental conditions testify to the possibility of hydrocarbon concentration in mussel tissues after death. During filtration in sea water containing oil and oil products, these pollutants are bound into faeces and pseudofaeces which contain a greater percentage of aromatic compounds than the oil initially present in sea water. Quantitative data are presented on hydrocarbon changes in mussel excretory products during transfer from oil-polluted to clean sea water. When Black Sea crabsEriphia verrucosa are fed with mussels containing fuel-oil components accumulated from sea water, the pollutants concentrate in the whole body of the crab. This is in contrast to parenteral oil uptake, which leads to a concentration of most of the hydrocarbon in the muscles.  相似文献

Thyroid biosynthesis in glassed eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) was studied to establish whether salinity changes could affect it, when they live in sea water or in fresh water containing 125I. Aqueous extrait of homogenized cephalic heads of glassed eels contains an iodinated protein 17-19 S having thyroglobulin-like properties and including iodotyrosins (MIT and DIT) and thyroid hormones (3 and T4). Biosynthesis of this proteins is roughly twice more important in fresh water than in sea water at 19-21 degrees C and its specific radioactivity (125I) is practically double in fresh water.  相似文献

The pH of sea water remains relatively constant at 7·8–8·3 but, in lower salinity environments, inshore and in estuaries, localized changes in pH can be caused by effluent discharge. Eggs and larvae of the Atlantic herring, Clupea harengus L., can be spawned and develop in these areas and thus may be exposed to acidic conditions. Larvae hatched from eggs exposed to sea water at pH 7·0 or 6·0 or 5·2, in comparison to controls, showed a significant reduction in the mean volume of muscle fibres and mitochondria, degeneration of mitochondrial cristae and swelling of the sarcoplasmic reticulum. These sublethal ultrastructural changes would cause reduced metabolic activity and loss of contractility leading to reduced swimming and equilibrium ability with consequent loss of viability.  相似文献

The seeds of Crithmmm maritimum L. were germinated floating on various concentrations of sea water up to 50% at constant temperatures of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25°C and at alternating temperatures of 5 and 15°C. 5 and 25°C. and 15 and 25°C. Significantly higher germination was obtained at alternating than at constant temperature. When two constant temperatures at which no germination occurred were alternated, good germination was obtained. There was reduced germination and increase in time of first germination as sea water concentration increased, in the absence of sea water, high temperature caused not only severe inhibition of germination but also permanent injury to the seeds. The results help to explain the germination behaviour of the species in nature.  相似文献

The family Otariidae comprises the only group of marine mammals that habitually use their pectoral appendages to generate propulsive forces during swimming. This method of propulsion was examined in the California sea lion ( Zalophus californianus ), a representative member of the family. High-speed films were taken as a sea lion swam against a water current generated inside a large flow channel. Thrust production was determined by examining the body's movement at various stages of the propulsive cycle. Sea lions generate thrust continuously throughout the stroke. Over its initial three-quarters, foreflippers act as hydrofoils creating forward thrust and lift as they move vertically through the water. Thrust production is greatest, however, near the end of the stroke, when flippers are used as paddles and are oriented broad side to the oncoming flow. The force generated by this three-phased system of propulsion is likely to be greater than that attainable by either an exclusively lift-based hydrofoil or drag-based paddling style of swimming.
The kinematic changes that enable sea lions to change speed were also investigated. Film records revealed that stroke amplitude became greater with speed, although total stroke duration remained essentially constant. Sea lions increase stroke frequency with velocity but large variations in the measured values suggest that changes in amplitude and flipper angle of attack are also important parameters for modulating swimming speed.  相似文献

We found that bacteria closely related to Alcanivorax became a dominant bacterial population in petroleum-contaminated sea water when nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients were supplied in adequate quantity. The predominance of Alcanivorax bacteria was demonstrated under three experimental conditions: (i) in batch cultures of sea water containing heavy oil; (ii) in columns packed with oil-coated gravel undergoing a continuous sea water flow; and (iii) in a large-scale tidal flux reactor that mimics a beach undergoing tidal cycles with fresh sea water. These results suggest that bacteria related to Alcanivorax are major players in the bioremediation of oil-contaminated marine environments.  相似文献

Abstract— —Studies were undertaken to correlate the changes in the synthesis of brain nuclear RNA during olfactory stimulation in saltwater catfish ( Galeichthys felis ). Catfish allowed to swim for 1 hr in sea water containing morpholine (10−4 M) showed an increase in brain nuclear RNA and a change in base ratios in contrast to controls in plain sea water. These changes in brain nuclear RNA were reversed within 24 hr to the levels of unstimulated controls when morpholine stimulated fish were transferred to fresh sea water.
In a split-brain preparation in an isolated catfish head, one naris was washed with morpholine in sea water (10−6 M), while the other naris was washed with plain sea water. The stimulated half of the brain, compared to the unstimulated half, showed the same changes in nuclear RNA as those noted in free swimming catfish. Brain cytoplasmic fractions did not exhibit any changes in RNA following olfactory stimulation. Amyl acetate, shrimp extract, and extracts from red fish skin as odorants also elicited changes in brain nuclear RNA. With each odorant there was an increase in amount of RNA and also a change in base ratio, where the base ratio changes were different for each odorant tested. With camphor as an odorant, there was an increase in brain nuclear RNA, while with menthol as an odorant, there was a decrease in brain nuclear RNA. In both instances the base ratio of the RNA did not change in contrast to the controls. These studies suggest that olfactory stimulants affect a change in content and character of the RNA in brain nuclei, whereas irritants to the olfactory epithelium change the content of brain nuclear RNA but do not alter the base ratio.  相似文献

The chemical shifts and line widths of the Watson-Crick ring NH resonances of the self-complementary duplex of d-ApTpGpCpApT have been monitored in the presence of 0.1 M phosphate at neutral pH in aqueous solution. While the resonance positions of the terminal and internal AT base pairs shift upfield and broaden as average resonances with increasing temperature (helix and coil exchange several times prior to exchange with water from the coil form), those of the central GC base pairs broaden in the absence of upfield shifts (exchange with water occurs each time helix converts to coil). The line-width changes at the AT base pairs monitor the lifetime of the coil state at these positions prior to exchange with water while the line-width changes at the GC base pairs monitor the lifetime of the helix prior to dissociation to strands. This permits the separation of the propagation reaction at the AT base pairs from the nucleation reaction at the GC base pairs during helix formation. The experimental data have been quantitatively analyzed to yield (at 20 degrees) a nucleation formation rate of approximately 10(3) sec-1 for the GC base pairs (bimolecular rate constant of approximately 6 times 10(6) l. mol-1 sec-1) and a dissociation rate of 6 times 10(2) sec-1 at these same base pairs (unimolecular dissociation to strands). The unimolecular propagation reactions at the terminal and terminal base pairs are associated with reaction rates greater than 10(4) sec-1. These values are consistent with a slow formation of a stable nucleus at the GC base pairs followed by a rapid propagation reaction at the AT base pairs. The line width of the (GC) central base pairs in the presence of phosphate is a direct measure of the lifetime of the total helix and yields an activation energy of 45 kcal for helix to coil conversion measured over a narrow temperature range. The exchange from the coil form with water is catalyzed by 0.1 M phosphate with a rate constant kHPO2-/4 = 0.2 times 10(6) 1. mol-1 sec-1.  相似文献

Analysis of the Carboniferous brachiopod zones of eastern Australia shows that they were affected by two major controlling factors - eustatic changes of sea level, and a deterioration (cooling) of climate. Eustatic lowering of sea level caused the removal of the sea from narrow shelf areas and a loss of habitat, and was responsible for the first (late early to middle Visean) of two major episodes of faunal extinction. Subsequent transgression restored a modified warm-water cosmopolitan fauna to the shelf regions. Smaller changes in sea levels were probably responsible for the abrupt disappearance of many species or genera at zonal boundaries and their replacement by a new set of species and genera in succeeding zones. The second major episode of extinction was caused by the lowering of temperature in the latest Visean to early Namurian because of the rapid southerly movement of Australia. The warm water cosmopolitan fauna was eliminated and replaced by the low-diversity Gondwana fauna. Both mechanisms produced particular faunal signatures. The diversity of faunas on either side of the hiatus produced by eustatic lowering of sea level is constant in areas with uniform climatic conditions, and in warm to temperate regions there are low levels of endemism. Faunas associated with a sudden lowering of temperature suffer a significant drop in diversity but are characterized by a high level of endemism.  相似文献

After acclimation, Carcinus can maintain calcium balance in dilute (35-100%) but not in low calcium sea water. 71% of total haemolymph calcium (9-54 +/- 0-42 mM) was in ionic form as compared with 90-9%(9-9mM) in sea water. On acclimation to dilute sea water the calcium activity of the haemolymph was greater than that of the medium, the difference being maintained by active calcium uptake. Carcinus is highly permeable to Ca2+, influx from sea water being 0-513 +/- 0-07 mumoles g-1 h-1 and the time constant for calcium influx 4-3 +/- 0-48 h. Calcium space represented ca. 25% wet body weight independent of body size or salinity of acclimation medium.  相似文献

1. Using the unfertilized egg of the sea urchin, Arbacia, as osmometer, it was found that the rate with which water enters or leaves the cell depends on the osmotic pressure of the medium: the velocity constant of the diffusion process is higher when the cell is in concentrated sea water, and lower when the sea water medium is diluted with distilled water. Differences of more than tenfold in the value of the velocity constant were obtained in this way. When velocity constants are plotted against concentration of medium, a sigmoid curve is obtained. 2. These results are believed to indicate that cells are more permeable to water when the osmotic pressure of the medium is high than when it is low. This relation would be accounted for if water should diffuse through pores in a partially hydrated gel, constituting the cell membrane. In a medium of high osmotic pressure, the gel is conceived to give up water, to shrink, and therefore to allow widening of its pores with more ready diffusion of water through them. Conversely, in solutions of lower osmotic pressure, the gel would take up water and its pores become narrow.  相似文献

Activity and respiration in the anemone, Metridium senile (L.), were monitored under both constant and fluctuating salinity conditions. During constant exposure to 50% sea water it was found that the animals retracted the tentacles and that the rate of oxygen consumption decreased by ≈50%. The same response was elicited from animals in 100% sea water in a contracted state. Animals exposed to continually fluctuating salinities were found to retract the tentacles, contract the body wall, and produce amounts of mucus during periods of decreasing salinities. These reactions were reversed during exposure to increasing salinity. Oxygen consumption never ceased entirely in animals exposed to dilute sea water and it was found that during declining oxygen tension M. senile regulated its oxygen consumption until the environmental oxygen tension fell to ≈30% saturation.  相似文献

Ionic composition of the vacuolar sap of Noctiluca miliariswas as follows: [Na+] = 487.3 mM, [K+]=24.1 mM, [Ca2+]=6.6 mM,[Mg2+]=2.8 mM, [Cl]=500mM, [NH4+]=15–25 mM, and[SO42–]=undetectable. To measure the vacuolar pH of singleliving cells, a pH-sensitive glass microelectrode was used.The vacuolar pH value was 3.50 ±0.18. When the cellswere transferred from normal sea water into osmotically adjusted50% sea water for one day, the vacuolar ion concentrations remainedalmost constant. Upon immersing the cells in osmotically unadjustedsea water of various concentrations for one day, the observedincrements or decrements of the vacuolar ion concentrationscould be accounted for largely by the migration of water outof or into the cells. A complex of adaptive changes occurring in the Pacific salmon fry in the process of migration to the sea is described, including behavior, ion content in carcasses, and morphological changes in Stannius bodies, gill epithelium, and nephron tubular epithelium. Participating in experiments with transfer from fresh water into a two-layer aquarium (the lower layer - sea water, the upper layer - fresh water) were smolts of chum salmon and underyearlings of masu salmon as well as the trachurus and leiurus forms of the three-spined stickleback Casterosteus aculeatus. All fish, regardless of their salt preference, at once after placement into the two-layer aquarium, occupied the sea water zone, at the very bottom of the aquarium. After 1 h, there started brief excursions of masu salmon and chum salmon to the upper, fresh water layer; however, both forms of the three-spined stickleback did not participate in these excursions. After 12 h, the chum salmon settled down in the lower, sea water layer, while the masu salmon - in the upper, fresh water layer. Both forms of the three-spined stickleback never left the sea water layer and felt quite comfortably on the aquarium bottom. It seems that the high tolerance of the both stickleback forms to wide salinity limits allows them to choose the convenient position regardless of the water salt composition. By analyzing the material obtained for three years (2001-2003) on structure and functions of the gill epithelium chloride cells (CC), we have come to the conclusion that the fresh water fry of two salmon species, chum and masu salmons, caught at the same time and practically in the same water reservoirs can be divided into three groups. The underyearlings of the masu salmon as a rule are characterized by the thickened epithelium of secondary gill lamellae, but by a very small number of CC. In smolts of chum salmon, on the contrary, the epithelium is sufficiently thin, but enriched in the CC that demonstrate an active structure in the very beginning of migration to sea. However, with approaching the sea (and with an increase of terms of migration) the CC activity drops, but their amount does not change. And only after migration to the sea the CC activity rises again, although their amount seems to remain unchanged. The described peculiarities of behavior and of the ion composition regulation in the migrating salmon fry confirm the hypothesis that the salmons evolutionized in fresh water, that the Oncorhynchus genus appeared in large spaces of saltish waters, such as the Japan Sea at the period of the early Pleistocene, and that learning of fry of the Oncorhynchus genus (for instance, of O. gorbuscha and O. keta) is the most specialized in the salmons migrating to the sea, whereas the fresh water species of chars (Salvelinus) and of trouts (Salmo) are more primitive.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the adaptability of the guppy to various salt concentrations. The guppy, Poecilia reticulata , (total length 11–40 mm) were subjected to abrupt and gradual changes from fresh water (salinity=0.1%) to various salinities (%). No mortality occurred when the fish were transferred from fresh water to 50% sea water (19.5%). Through gradual adaptation from 50% sea water to 80% of the fish were able to tolerate 100% (39%) sea water for 7 days. After a 7 day stay in sea water, fish were readapted to fresh water during a 3 h period. Through gradual adaptation fish were also able to tolerate salinities ranging from 39.0% (100% sea water) to 58.5%. After a 30 day stay in 150% sea water (58.5%), fish were readapted to fresh water over a 5 h period. The results indicate that they were well able to tolerate the abrupt change from 100 or 150% sea water to fresh water. Females that stayed in 150% sea water (58.5%) for 30 days had embryos in their gonads.  相似文献

Summary Isolated heads of trout (Salmo gairdneri) were used to study the unidirectional flux of sodium and chloride across the gills in salt water.Two perfusion techniques were employed. Under constant pressure perfusion, the addition of adrenaline during the perfusion causes an increase in the flow-rate. Under constant flow-rate conditions, adrenaline provokes a decrease in pressure. A comparison of influx determination made with these two techniques of perfusion shows that variations in flow-rate of perfusion do not affect the assessment of these fluxes.A net efflux of sodium, but not of chloride, is demonstrated in sea water. The effluxes of sodium and chloride observed in sea water are decreasedd about 50% during a rapid transfer to fresh water. The addition of potassium to this medium stimulates the effluxes of sodium and chloride, suggesting a Na/K exchange participating in the chloride excretion.Adrenaline causes an inhibition of sodium and chloride efflux in sea water which persists after transfer to fresh water and the addition of potassium. Only the influx of chloride is inhibited at a concentration of 10–5 M whereas the sodium influx is unaffected. The presence of adrenaline results in a net influx of both sodium and chloride.The differential action of adrenaline on the influxes of sodium and chloride suggests that the hemodynamic modifications provoked by this catecholamine occur independently of its aforementioned ion exchange effects.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption (MO2), haemoglobin oxygen saturation level (SVO2) and pH (pHv) in prebranchial blood were measured in lugworms experimentally confined in sea water at 15 degrees C. Total blood flow through the gills (Vb) was estimated. For sea water oxygen partial pressure (PwO2) between 120 and 150 Torr MO2, SVO2 and Vb were high and nearly constant. For PwO2 less than 120 Torr, Vb fell quickly, MO2 progressively dropped, and metabolism remained aerobic at the expense of the prebrancial blood oxygen store. For PwO2 less than 50 Torr, Vb and SvO2 values were extremely low, and the low pHv and the modified buffer power of the surrounding sea water showed that anaerobic metabolism was occurring. Changes in respiratory gas exchanges and metabolism during the tidal cycle are deduced from the comparison of these results with data obtained in the field.  相似文献
