Pyloric caeca were removed through the raytips of sea stars, Pisaster giganteus (Stimpson), beginning their seasonal period of gonad growth. Four months later their feeding rate, gonad growth, and gametogenic activity were lower than those of intact animals, while body growth rate remained the same. Removal of only the raytips also depressed feeding rate and gonad growth. When sea stars were starved, gonad growth and gametogenic activity were lower in animals without pyloric caeca, but body weight loss was the same as in intact animals. We conclude that when food is abundant, materials are utilized to enhance somatic and gonad growth. With decreasing reserves, due either to reduced food intake and/or pyloric caecum removal, somatic maintenance and growth have priority over gonad growth in material and energy allocation. Such a pattern of resource allocation is appropriate for long-lived iteroparous animals, such as these sea stars.  相似文献

Growth and reproduction in a Florida population of bay scallop, Argopecten irradians (Lamarck), existing at the southern limit of its distribution, was monitored over a 3-yr period. Somatic growth accompanied increasing water temperature between May and August, when maximum mantle, digestive gland, and adductor muscle weights and indexes were observed. From July through September, reproductive development was correlated with a decline in adductor muscle weight and index. Maximum gonad weight, gonad index, and oocyte diameter were found in late September and early October. Spawning commenced at this time in conjunction with decreasing water temperature. In comparison to more northern populations, the reproductive cycle of the Florida bay scallop occurs later in the year and is characterized by a higher gametogenic initiation temperature, a decreased maximum gonad index and decreased oocyte diameter, and a shift in reproductive energy resources from digestive gland (available food) to adductor muscle (pre-stored reserves). Increased metabolic rate associated with higher temperature and coupled with decreased food supply results in the Florida bay scallop having less energy available for reproduction, ultimately limiting its southern distribution.  相似文献

Abstract. The gametogenesis of the earthworm Hormogaster elisae , an endemic species of central Spain, was studied over a 12-month period. The ovaries, seminal vesicles, male funnels, and spermathecae of 156 specimens were removed by dissection. Microscopic analysis of these organs allowed the study of the gametogenic cycle, and provided information on copulation method and reproductive cycle. Individuals of H. elisae have two pairs of spermathecae, the posterior of which is more important for the storage of sperm. In summer, the earthworms enter quiescence, and oogenesis and spermatogenesis are interrupted. The gametogenic processes occur mainly during autumn and winter. Ovules are produced during all months except August and September, and the spermathecae contain sperm over the full 12-month period. There is a reproductive peak in spring, when most ovules are produced and the clitellum is most developed.  相似文献

At Kaikoura, New Zealand (42°25′S: 173°42′E), tagged, immature Astrostole scabra (Hutton) usually remained within intertidal pools for <30 days. There was no seasonal vertical migration or intermixing of sub-populations. Intertidal seastars were smaller, had a thicker skeleton, and were damaged more frequently than their subtidal counterparts. The onset of sexual maturity in this species occurred coincidentally with the adoption of an exclusively subtidal habitat (20–146 m), the attainment of a radius of at least 110 mm, and a reduction in skeleton thickness. In 1975, 1976, and 1977, spawning was in late August-early September. Gametogenesis commenced in February–March. There was no seasonal inverse correlation between gonad and pyloric caeca indices. In undamaged, subtidal seastars of both sexes, gonad production was related to body size such that the volume of gonad produced by August increased linearly with respect to eviscerated wet weight. Regeneration partly suppressed gonad production, and large intertidal seastars had reduced gonad indices. The periodicity of reproductive events could not be correlated unequivocally with any physical or biotic exogenous environmental factor.  相似文献

This is the characterisation of the reproductive dynamics of Rhinella schneideri in an urban area during two non‐consecutive periods. Germ cells are similar to those of other anuran species, but some characteristics were more marked for R. schneideri, such as the morphological similarity of spermatogonia and oogonia, which may be related to their potential for development into both stem cell types. The presence of lampbrush chromosomes, the extensive variation in number and organisation of the nucleoli and the organisation of the nuclear cortex are also characteristic of this species. All of these features appear to work together, participating in the dynamic growth of the oocyte. In some specimens, previtellogenic oocytes were also observed in the seminiferous tubules, which may be related to anthropogenic changes induced in the study area. In the first study period, reproductive dynamics revealed synchrony between the sexes, with the preparation of the gonads from October to December and the reproductive season from October to January, coinciding with the rainy season. In the second period, reproductive synchrony was also observed, but gonad preparation occurred from February to June and the reproductive season was from August to November, before the rainy season. These changes in the reproductive cycle suggest that urbanisation affects the reproduction of this species.  相似文献

Mesophotic coral ecosystems (below 30–40 m depth) host a large diversity of zooxanthellate coral communities and may play an important role in the ecology and conservation of coral reefs. Investigating the reproductive biology of mesophotic corals is important to understand their life history traits. Despite an increase in research on mesophotic corals in the last decade, their reproductive biology is still poorly understood. Here, gametogenesis and fecundity of the Indo-Pacific mesophotic coral, Acropora tenella, were examined in an upper mesophotic reef (40 m depth) in Okinawa, Japan for the first time. Acropora tenella is a hermaphrodite with a single annual gametogenic cycle, and both oogenesis and spermatogenesis occurring for 11–12 and 5–6 months, respectively. Timing of spawning of this species was similar to other shallow Acropora spp. in the region. However, colonies had longer gametogenic cycles and less synchronous gamete maturation compared to shallow acroporids with spawning extended over consecutive months. Both the polyp fecundity (number of eggs per polyp) and gonad index (defined as the number of eggs per square centimeter) of A. tenella were lower than most acroporids. Our findings contribute to understanding of the life history of corals on mesophotic reefs and suggest that the reproductive biology of upper mesophotic corals is similar to that of shallow-water corals.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of the sub-Antarctic limpet, Nacella (Patinigera) macquariensis Finlay, 1927 is described from monthly gonad indices and slide smears of gonadal tissue. Two populations were sampled, from the eulittoral zone and at ≈4 m depth into the sublittoral zone. Gametogenesis started 2 months earlier in the eulittoral zone population; the breeding period, however, was sufficiently long to overlap in the two populations. This phase difference in reproductive cycles is discussed with respect to possible genetic divergence and correlation between timing within the reproductive cycle and environmental factors. Lipid was a prominent component of both the digestive gland and the gonad, but not of the foot. Changes in lipid levels during the reproductive cycle indicated that the digestive gland stored lipids which were transferred to the gonad during gametogenesis.  相似文献

Anthopleura xanthogrammica (Brandt) and A. elegantissima (Brandt) were collected monthly (1974–1976) from a variety of intertidal habitats in Washington State. Histological preparations were used to examine oocyte maturation, testis maturation, gonad number, and gonad volume. Maturation was examined over two years and both species were found to build gonad during the winter, spring, and summer followed by spawning in the late summer and autumn. Gonad volume and gonad number increase with individual size after a certain minimum size has been reached. Gonad volume as a function of body size does not change with habitat although the size structure of the population may change substantially.  相似文献

The period of gonads development was first studied from one to five years in the freshwater pearl mussel Hyriopisis schlegelii. It lasted for 36 months and was divided into three main stages: initiation of gonad formation, a stable growth phase, and a reproductive cell development phase. Each reproductive cycle consisted of five stages: proliferative stage (from late January to late February), growth stage (from late February to late March), maturation stage, spawning stage (from early April to late October) and recovery stage (from early November to late January). Interestingly, a hermaphroditic phenomenon was observed in this mussel for the first time, which appears during the development stage from 26 to 32 months. Male and female follicular tissues coexisted in hermaphrodite individuals with the male follicular tissue accounting for more than 90% of the whole gonad tissue. No hermaphroditic phenomenon was observed in matured gonad. We thus speculate that self-fertilization does not exist in H. schlegelii.  相似文献

Short-term fluctuations in the reproductive condition of thelimpet Cellana capensis are described. Gravimetric and histologicalanalyses of gonadal development were carried out on samplescollected at 4 day intervals over a 3 month period from theMkambati Nature Reserve, Transkei. The results indicate a distinctlack of reproductive synchrony within the population, whichapplied not only to gametogenic development per se but alsoto spawning activity. Some of the spawning events identifiedduring the study period were more marked than others, thesemay reflect a greater degree of synchronization in activity. Results presented suggest that C. capensis is probably a ‘partial’rather than a ‘complete’ spawner. The implicationsof asynchronous spawning activity for the reproductive successof broadcast spawners are also discussed. (Received 6 December 1988; accepted 15 February 1989)  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the biochemical composition of Rapana venosa in relation to reproductive cycle and environment on the northern coast of China were investigated from March 2012 to February 2013. The results indicated that R. venosa has an annual reproductive cycle with synchronized gonad development in both females and males. Gametogenesis was initiated in September and gametes developed slowly during the winter, followed by rapid gonad development during spring and summer. Most individuals from this study were sexually mature between May and June, and gamete release occurred mainly between May and August. The peak of spawning was found in July and the recovery of the gonad was observed between August and November. The key biochemical components including glycogen, protein and lipid were analysed in four tissues, specifically the gonad, digestive gland, mantle and foot. The declining glycogen content in the gonad, digestive gland and mantle during maturation suggested that glycogen was consumed during the development of the gonad. Lipids and protein can be stored in the digestive gland and used during the winter in a period of food shortage. The protein and lipid contents in the ovaries increased during gonad development, which suggested that the protein and lipid had been accumulated as vitellin in oocytes.  相似文献

We describe seasonal changes in the biochemical composition of digestive gland, adductor muscle and gonad and surrounding mantle area in Crassostrea gigas from the Western Atlantic coast of France. Seasonality in histology of storage tissues and glycogen storage capacity in isolated vesicular cells were also studied. Proteins, the main muscle components did not contribute to the gametogenetic effort. Glycogen and lipids were stored in the digestive gland, gonad and surrounding mantle area during the wintering period and the gonad and surrounding mantle area represented the main storage compartment supplying the reproductive effort. Gametogenesis in spring and summer was associated with an increase in lipid and protein contents and took place at the expense of glycogen reserves. Histological study of storage tissue in the gonad led us to define four seasonal stages of storage tissue development. In vitro, glycogen storage capacity in isolated vesicular cells was high from November to March and markedly reduced during gametogenesis, decreasing below detectable levels after spawning. This physiological state should be taken into account with relation to summer mortalities occurring in commercial growing areas.  相似文献

Changes in the carotenoid content in gonads of two sea urchins species were investigated during maturation. The content of echinenones and carotenes, the two major carotenoid fractions in gonads, is highest for Strongylocentrotus intermedius at the spawning gametogenic stage of gonad maturation for both sexes. For S. nudus, the content of these pigments is highest at stages of active gametogenesis and spawning for males and at the growth stage for females. A comparison of the carotenoid content dynamics during maturation of gonads for males, females and animals at the resting (sexual inactivity) stage was also carried out.  相似文献

Echinaster (Echinaster) sepositus is one of the most abundant sea stars in western Mediterranean rocky bottoms, yet its reproductive biology remains virtually unknown. Here we report the ultrastructure of its gametogenesis over 2 consecutive years. It is a gonochoric species with an annual reproductive cycle spawning gametes in late summer and early autumn. Each arm of every individual contained two gonads (dark red in females and yellow in males). In both sexes, the gonad was a single, large sac composed of several smaller sacs. The gonad wall consisted of two multilayered sacs, outer and inner, separated by the genital haemal sinus. The histology of the gonad wall was consistent with that found in other asteroids. Oogenesis was continuous during the year, but eggs were spawned only in late summer. Oocytes were in close relationship with follicular cells that are suggested to transfer nutrients to the oocytes. Spermatogenesis was restricted to 5–6 months in spring-summer. It occurred in columns with an axial interstitial cell supporting each column, and producing processes towards the lumen that remained connected to spermatogenic cells by intercellular junctions. Developing sperm cells were found along the length of the column, while spermatozoa were found free in the testis lumen. Spermatogenesis followed the pattern described for echinoderms, to give rise to an acrosome-bearing, round-shaped spermatozoon. The histology and cytology of the reproductive process in E. sepositus followed the general pattern found for asteroids.  相似文献

The reproductive ecology of the hermaphroditic broadcast spawning scleractinian reef coral Platygyra daedalea was studied on lagoonal reefs in Kenya. While single annual gametogenic cycles occurred in 84% of colonies, biannual gametogenic cycles were recorded in 16% of colonies and these patterns occurred in two morphotypes. In colonies with a single annual cycle, oogenesis occurred for 6–7 months from September to March and spermatogenesis for 5 months from November to March. In biannually spawning colonies, oogenic cycles overlapped for at least 2 months prior to gamete release. The major spawning period occurred in February and March, with minor spawning also occurring in August–October in biannually spawning colonies. Reproductive effort was lower during the minor winter compared to the major summer spawning, with fewer colonies reproducing (12.5–19.2%), not all mesenteries producing oocytes (32.5%) and less than half of the mesenteries with mature oocytes had associated spermaries (48.1%).  相似文献

The population structure and reproductive biology of Uca inversa (Hoffman) were studied in Mozambique for the first time. Crabs were randomly sampled on monthly basis during low tide periods from January to December 2002 at Costa do Sol mangrove, Maputo Bay, southern Mozambique. A total of 1131 crabs was obtained, of which 518 (45.8%) were males, 322 non-ovigerous females (29.3%) and 281 (24.8%) ovigerous females, respectively. The present population presents non-normal size frequency distributions, with males reaching greater size than females. The overall sex ratio (M:F) (1:0.84) was significantly different from the 1:1 ratio. Ovigerous females were present throughout the year and the embryonic development showed synchrony with the gonadosomatic index, in which females carrying eggs close to hatching were more abundant when the gonadosomatic index reached minimum values in the population. Egg number increases with female size. Juvenile recruitment was also continuous with high proportion of young recruits being recorded in winter, probably due to the high reproductive activity displayed in summer. U. inversa exhibits a rapid embryonic cycle accompanied by a rapid larval development and settlement in the study area.  相似文献

The reproductive system of gobiid fishes (family Gobiidae), especially among hermaphroditic goby species, is morphologically diverse. Two hermaphroditic species in the genus Gobiodon, G. okinawae and G. oculolineatus, have several modifications of the gonoduct and gonad that are associated with secretion production and storage. In this study, an examination of six additional Gobiodon species, G. citrinus, G. fulvus, G. histrio, G. micropus, G. quinquestrigatus and G. rivulatus, revealed similar reproductive modifications. Among these six Gobiodon species, a number of features were found to be shared amongst each other and with G. okinawae and G. oculolineatus. All individuals had either an ovariform gonad or an ovotestis; no individuals had a purely testicular gonad. The gonadal lobes extended caudally past, rather than terminating at, their union with the gonoduct. Accessory secretory structures associated with the reproductive complex, termed accessory gonoduct structures, or AGdS, always originated from the gonoduct. The ovariform gonad was comprised entirely of ovarian tissue, while the ovotestis was divided into three morphologically distinct regions. Only one of the ovotestis regions was strictly gametogenic, consisting of both early stage oocytes and sperm-filled seminiferous lobules. The second region of the ovotestis was made up of stromal tissue surrounding some compressed lumina and a small number of early-stage oocytes. The third region was highly lobulated and acted as a storage region for eosinophilic secretions. Anteriorly, the stromal region of each of the two ovotestis lobes disappeared and the gametogenic and secretory storage regions of the ovotestis separated into two discrete lobes. In all of the examined Gobiodon species, all individuals having an ovotestis also had AGdS. However, AGdS presence among individuals having an ovariform gonad varied in a species-specific manner, with the AGdS being fully differentiated and well-developed in a number of species, and either in a very early stage of development, or absent, in others. The distribution of these AGdS states among Gobiodon species corresponds with that of several other morphological features that have been proposed by Harold et al. (Bull Mar Sci 82:119–136, 2008) as phylogenetically informative for intra-generic clade identification. Reproductive characters may prove informative in the development of hypotheses of relationships among gobiid fishes.  相似文献

Morphological changes in the sexual organs of the pulmonates were observed throughout a year and correlated with reproductive-cycle periods. Reproductive-organ weights of the snail Megalobulimus abbreviatus were recorded seasonally and gonad sections were analyzed morphologically. The weights were used to obtain the organosomatic index. Mean oocytic diameter and oocytic maturation index were based on gonad sections. It was concluded that M. abbreviatus is an iteroparous snail whose annual reproductive cycle is characterized by mating and egg laying throughout spring and early summer, and also by reproductive system preparation, occurring over the remainder of the summer until the end of winter, for a new breeding season.  相似文献

The gametogenic cycle and number of spawning seasons per year of the female Chlamys (Azumapecten) farreri farreri were investigated by qualitative and quantitative analyses, and also the size at 50% of group sexual maturity (the size of first sexual maturity) was calculated to inform natural living resource management. In qualitative histologic analysis, the gametogenic cycle of this species can be classified into five successive stages: early active stage, late active stage, ripe stage, partially spawned stage, and spent/inactive stage. The spawning season occurs annually from July to September. In quantitative statistical analysis using an image analysis system, the patterns of monthly changes in reproductive cells were shown to be maximum in June and then dropped sharply from July to September. From these data, it is apparent that the C. (A.) farreri farreri has a unimodal annual gametogenic cycle. Shell heights at 50% of group sexual maturity were estimated as 51.47?mm and was 100% for scallops over 61.0?mm.  相似文献

Histological characterization of the hermaphroditic gonad (HG) and seasonality of gametogenesis were investigated in a population of Siphonaria lessonii from the coast of Buenos Aires Province (37°16′S, 56°58′W). Monthly analysis of the frequency of gametogenic stages, as well as the number and mean size of oocytes, were used to determine reproductive events over a 2‐year period (June 2012–May 2014). Female and male gametes were observed simultaneously within acini of adult individuals and continuously throughout the period studied. Oogenesis commenced in the beginning of austral autumn, with gonads characterized mainly by proliferation of female cells. From this moment, oocytes gradually increased in number and area until spring, when a large number of individuals were found in the evacuation stage. The same trend was observed from early gonad maturation to advanced stages, indicating that gonad development was closely related to the frequency of oocyte stages and to the area (size) of oocytes. Spermatogenesis was also observed as a continuous process throughout the year, although spent acini were more frequent from November until February. Reproductive seasonality and gametogenesis were associated with changes in temperature and day length.  相似文献
