Growth and reproduction in a Florida population of bay scallop, Argopecten irradians (Lamarck), existing at the southern limit of its distribution, was monitored over a 3-yr period. Somatic growth accompanied increasing water temperature between May and August, when maximum mantle, digestive gland, and adductor muscle weights and indexes were observed. From July through September, reproductive development was correlated with a decline in adductor muscle weight and index. Maximum gonad weight, gonad index, and oocyte diameter were found in late September and early October. Spawning commenced at this time in conjunction with decreasing water temperature.In comparison to more northern populations, the reproductive cycle of the Florida bay scallop occurs later in the year and is characterized by a higher gametogenic initiation temperature, a decreased maximum gonad index and decreased oocyte diameter, and a shift in reproductive energy resources from digestive gland (available food) to adductor muscle (pre-stored reserves). Increased metabolic rate associated with higher temperature and coupled with decreased food supply results in the Florida bay scallop having less energy available for reproduction, ultimately limiting its southern distribution.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the biochemical composition of Rapana venosa in relation to reproductive cycle and environment on the northern coast of China were investigated from March 2012 to February 2013. The results indicated that R. venosa has an annual reproductive cycle with synchronized gonad development in both females and males. Gametogenesis was initiated in September and gametes developed slowly during the winter, followed by rapid gonad development during spring and summer. Most individuals from this study were sexually mature between May and June, and gamete release occurred mainly between May and August. The peak of spawning was found in July and the recovery of the gonad was observed between August and November. The key biochemical components including glycogen, protein and lipid were analysed in four tissues, specifically the gonad, digestive gland, mantle and foot. The declining glycogen content in the gonad, digestive gland and mantle during maturation suggested that glycogen was consumed during the development of the gonad. Lipids and protein can be stored in the digestive gland and used during the winter in a period of food shortage. The protein and lipid contents in the ovaries increased during gonad development, which suggested that the protein and lipid had been accumulated as vitellin in oocytes.  相似文献

Sterol composition and content and their seasonal variations over 18 months were investigated in adductor muscle, digestive gland and gonads of Pecten maximus. Sterols were isolated by Silicagel 60 thin layer chromatography and identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Eleven sterols were identified, with cholesterol, brassicasterol, 24-methylenecholesterol and 22-trans-dehydrocholesterol being the principal components. The same sterols were found in all three tissues independent of season. The relative amounts of each sterol present in each tissue differed. Total sterol levels in gonad and muscle were higher than in digestive gland. Statistically significant differences (P<0.05) were found between the concentrations of each of the sterols isolated from the gonad or muscle and digestive gland. The seasonal variations in the sterol content of the gonad seem be related to the reproductive cycle, while the sterol content of the digestive gland appears to be linked to diet, mainly diatoms or dinoflagellates. The muscle sterol content showed minor changes throughout the year.  相似文献

This paper reports the parasites found in three commercially exploited bivalve molluscs (Mytella guyanensis, Anomalocardia brasiliana and Iphigenia brasiliana) of an estuarine region of Ilhéus, south of Bahia, Brazil (14°48′23′′S; 39°02′47′′W). Samples of 20 individuals of each species were collected fortnightly from August 2005 to August 2006. A total of 1480 individuals was collected and processed by standard histologic techniques; the histologic sections were stained with Harris haematoxylin and eosin and examined with light microscope. The water temperature in the study area varied from 24 to 30.5 °C and the salinity from 0 to 23 ppt. Remarkable differences were found in the parasitic community between the three mollusc species involved in the study, which occupied different habitats in the estuarine region of the Cachoeira river. The following parasites were found: intracellular rickettsia-like colonies in digestive epithelia; intracellular gregarine Nematopsis sp. in gills, mantle, gonad, digestive gland and foot muscle; sporocysts of a Bucephalidae trematode in gonads, mantle, gills, digestive gland and foot; unidentified digenetic metacercariae in digestive gland and gonad; metacestodes of Tylocephalum sp. in connective tissue in the digestive gland and in gonad; and an unidentified metazoan in mantle and intestinal lumen. No significant temporal variation in the prevalence of any parasite was detected, which could be due to the narrow temperature range of the region and the absence of patterns of salinity and rainfall variation through the year. The infestation by sporocyst was the only pathological threat detected for the studied populations because of its potential for host castration. The low infection intensity and/or prevalence of the other parasites and the lack of obvious lesions suggest that there is no other serious pathological risk for the studied mollusc populations.  相似文献

We describe seasonal changes in the biochemical composition of digestive gland, adductor muscle and gonad and surrounding mantle area in Crassostrea gigas from the Western Atlantic coast of France. Seasonality in histology of storage tissues and glycogen storage capacity in isolated vesicular cells were also studied. Proteins, the main muscle components did not contribute to the gametogenetic effort. Glycogen and lipids were stored in the digestive gland, gonad and surrounding mantle area during the wintering period and the gonad and surrounding mantle area represented the main storage compartment supplying the reproductive effort. Gametogenesis in spring and summer was associated with an increase in lipid and protein contents and took place at the expense of glycogen reserves. Histological study of storage tissue in the gonad led us to define four seasonal stages of storage tissue development. In vitro, glycogen storage capacity in isolated vesicular cells was high from November to March and markedly reduced during gametogenesis, decreasing below detectable levels after spawning. This physiological state should be taken into account with relation to summer mortalities occurring in commercial growing areas.  相似文献

This study aims to test whether environmental conditions including the trophic habitat and diet impact the biochemical composition of storage organs and affect the nutritional quality of eggs of Octopus vulgaris. Trophic habitat and gonad quality of neighbouring populations off the Portuguese coast, subject to different oceanographic regimes, were compared using the digestive gland and beaks as recorders of trophic and habitat preferences, and gonads as indicators of egg quality. Cholesterol, phospholipids and triacylglycerol content, essential fatty acid (EFA) profile of the digestive gland and stable isotopes, δ15N and δ13C, in the buccal mass flesh and beaks were indicators of the differences in the trophic habitat between populations. For gonad quality, the same bio-indicators were used to identify differences with maturation. The study shows that, although diet influences the EFA profile of the gonads to a certain degree, the main lipid content, phospholipids and cholesterol content in the gonads are not influenced by habitat conditions. This, therefore, suggests that O. vulgaris is able to influence the quality of egg content independent of diet. The species is believed to be an income breeder which attains maturity upon reaching a sufficient condition level, then channelling energy directly from food to gonad development.  相似文献

Lipid content and class in the Northern krill Meganyctiphanes norvegica (digestive gland, stomach, gonad, fat body, abdomen) was investigated and correlated with sex and reproductive stage. Ready to spawn females, have high lipid content in ovaries, while in males and spent females, the major site of lipid deposits was the digestive gland, followed by the fat body. These differences among spawning and spent females are indicative of strong interactions between the ovary and digestive gland and the ovary and fat body during vitellogenesis. Triacylglycerols (TAG) were the major neutral lipid class with high levels in the digestive gland. The major phospholipid was phosphatidylcholine (PC) particularly in the muscular tissue of the abdomen. Phosphatidyl-ethanolamine (PE) and -serine-inositol (PS-PI), were present at intermediate levels. Reproductive males were depleted in TAG and diacylglycerols (DAG) in the digestive gland, gonad and fat body, and had 4 times lower cholesterol in the gonad than ready to spawn females. Furthermore, ready to spawn females had in the ovary higher amounts of TAG, DAG and phospholipids (PC, PE, PS-PI) than spent females. Linear relationships between lipid content and main lipid class (TAG, PC, PE, PS-PI) in different fractions of males and ready to spawn females showed that: (1). TAG was stored for both sexes in all cephalothorax fractions with highest values in the digestive gland and ovary fluid; (2). PC was accumulated for both sexes in the fat body and the gonad with a higher slope for females, with the highest values in the ovary fluid and in the abdomen of males and that (3). PS-PI was stored only in the ovary and abdomen of mature females. These results are discussed in terms of the strategy developed by Meganyctiphanes norvegica to allocate lipids to the next generation for optimised embryogenesis.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the biochemical changes that occur during sexual maturation of the squids Illex coindetii and Todaropsis eblanae. In both species, amino acids and protein content increased in the gonad throughout maturation, but the allocation of these nitrogen compounds from the digestive gland and muscle was not evident. A significant (P < 0.05) increase in the content of lipids and fatty acids was observed in the gonad and digestive gland. It seems that both species take energy for egg production directly from food, rather than from stored products. Analyses for cholesterol revealed a significant (P < 0.05) increase in the gonad, and the lipid content differences between species are potentially related to different feeding ecologies. The glycogen reserves in the gonad increased significantly (P < 0.05), suggesting that glycogen has an important role in the maturation process. It was evident that sexual maturation had a significant effect upon the gonad energy content, but because the energy variation in the digestive gland and muscle was nonsignificant (P > 0.05), there was no evidence that storage reserves are transferred from tissue to tissue.  相似文献

瘤背石磺(Onchidium struma)是雌雄同体、异体交配的腹足纲贝类,其生殖系统较为复杂,通过解剖学和组织切片技术对成体瘤背石磺的生殖系统及产卵前后的组织学变化进行了系统的研究.结果表明:(1)雄性生殖系统主要南阴茎囊、阴茎、雄性附性腺、两性腺(早期主要产生精于)和储精囊等部分组成,而雌性生殖系统则由两性腺(后期主要产生卵子)、生殖细胞输送管、蛋白腺、黏液腺、受精囊和阴道等组成;(2)雄性生殖系统的组织学结构在产卵前后变化较小,但两性腺、卵蛋白腺和黏液腺的组织学在产卵前后变化显著;(3)产卵后的两性腺由于成熟卵子的排放,整体结构松散,部分腺泡中有少量未排出的成熟卵细胞和卵黄合成早期的卵母细胞;(4)产卵前的卵蛋白腺中含有许多强嗜碱性的小颗粒(组织学结构类似于卵鞘中的胚胎外周蛋白),产卵后腺体中的颗粒相对较大,且呈嗜酸性;(5)产卵前的黏液腺中存在嗜碱性区、嗜酸性区和混杂区三种区域,但是产卵前黏液腺以嗜酸性细胞为主,而产卵后的黏液腺中以嗜碱性细胞区域为主,且分泌管道中有一些嗜碱性物质.由此可见,卵蛋白腺的主要功能是分泌卵蛋白包裹受精卵形成卵外周蛋白层,而黏液腺则在产卵过程中分泌黏液物质形成卵鞘结构及链状的卵带.  相似文献

Aminopeptidase-I is polymorphic in the marine bivalve Mytilus edulis and catalyzes the liberation of neutral and aromatic N-terminal amino acids from oligopeptides. The enzyme is abundant in the digestive gland, where it is lysosomal, but is present in several other tissues. Temporal variation in enzyme activity was monitored for 2.5 years in two natural populations. The temporal pattern of variation was similar in gill, mantle, and digestive gland tissues; variations occurred over both short and long time periods. Enzyme activity under ambient temperature conditions was seasonally related to temperature in gill and digestive gland, but varied with reproductive cycle in mantle tissue. In the last, maximum activity corresponded to the postreproductive period in each population. Enzyme activity varies in response to tissue-specific metabolic demands. Population differences in enzyme activity are due to both genotype-dependent enzyme activity, since allele frequencies differ between populations, and environmental salinity. High salinity induces high activity, which is a response to the need for higher intracellular concentrations of free amino acids for cell volume regulation. Salinity has comparable effects on enzyme activity in natural and experimental populations. Genotype-dependent specific activities are a consequence of both differing kinetic properties among genotypes [Koehn, R. K., and Siebenaller, J. S. (1981). Biochem. Quasi-monthly samples of the Antarctic pectinid bivalve Adamussium colbecki were examined to determine the gametogenic pattern and periodicity. Both female and male gametogenic patterns show a very distinct seasonal development, with the initiation of gametogenesis in October and spawning in late September and early October of the following year. The duration of the gametogenic cycle is unusually short for Antarctic benthos, being 12 months. Reproductive effort (ratio of gonad mass to total tissue mass) is significantly higher in males than females, and males are ready to spawn earlier in the austral winter than females. The digestive gland also shows a strong seasonal cycle but develops earlier than the gonad. We propose that energy from the spring bloom is stored in the digestive gland before being transferred to the gonads. Gonad size, digestive-gland size and, to a lesser extent, adductor-muscle size, are related to adult size in most samples. The length of the gametogenic cycle suggests that reproduction in A. colbecki is more pectinid than Antarctic.  相似文献

The queen conch, Strombus gigas, is a marine resource of ecological and economical importance in the Caribbean region. Given its importance in this region, and the critical status of most populations, the reproductive biology of this species has been studied to support management decisions. It was from these studies that a generalized sporozoan infection was detected. This study describes the geographic distribution of a coccidian (Apicomplexa) parasite infecting the digestive gland of S. gigas throughout the Caribbean. The parasite was present in every location sampled. Based on histological analysis, the parasites from all locations are similar and appear to complete their life cycle within the digestive gland. The highest occurrence of the parasites was registered in samples from Puerto Rico (54 parasites per field) and Martinique (45 parasites per field). The lowest incidence was registered on the Mexican coast of Yucatan peninsula, at Alacranes and Chinchorro with 17 parasites per field. Data showed significant differences among sites (Kruskal Wallis H = 106.957; p ? 0.05). The abundance of parasites found in the digestive ducts and in the faeces suggests the liberation of parasites to the environment. A gradual decrease in abundance was found from East to West of the Caribbean sea.  相似文献

The annual reproductive cycle of the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus (Lamarck) was examined in individuals collected from four habitats in the Anclote estuary near Tarpon Springs, Florida. Two periods of advanced gametogenic activity were apparent, but this bimodal pattern was not necessarily reflected by gonad growth curves. Differences in reproductive events among sub-populations were related primarily to patterns of gonad growth. Reproductive synchrony present during spring became less apparent as spawning and recovery within the sub-populations took place at differential rates during late-spring and summer. The final spawnout in late summer returned the sub-populations into gametogenic synchrony.  相似文献

Specifics of the digestive cycle were studied in normal individuals of Gray’s mussel Crenomytilus grayanus and in those infested by trematodes from an unpolluted area of the sublittoral zone of Peter the Great Bay in May (during the day), June, July, and August. Four types of tubules corresponding to four phases of the digestive cycle were identified, and three varieties of destructing tubules were distinguished. It was shown that normally phases of absorption and digestion prevailed in the digestive gland. The portion of absorptive tubules (type II) was 95% in spring and 79% in summer. The total portion of destructing and restoring tubules (types III and IV) did not exceed 10% in spring and 20% in summer, and portion of tubules at the initial condition (type I) was 4% in spring and 2% in summer. During the day, insignificant variations in the ratio of different type tubules were recorded. It was revealed that, normally, granulocytomes were formed during utilization of necrotic tubules. Parasitic invasion of trematodes entailed swelling of the gland and a change in the proportion of tubules: the number of absorptive tubules decreased to 20%, the number of destructing and restoring tubules increased up to 60% and 12%, respectively.  相似文献

The role of the digestive gland, with respect to non-structural lipid, was examined using proximal analysis, histochemistry and quantitative histological techniques in the tropical loliginid squids Sepioteuthis lessoniana (Lesson) and Photololigo sp. The digestive gland of both species was characterized by large and numerous lipid droplets in the apical portion of the digestive cells and very few in the basal portion. The apical lipid droplets were released into the lumen of the gland and subsequently rapidly removed. Despite the numerous large apical lipid droplets, the lipid concentration in the digestive glands of S. lessoniana and Photololigo sp. was lower than that reported for most squid species. There was no relationship between lipid concentration and stage of digestion, suggesting that lipid is not stored in the gland after a meal. There was also no relationship between lipid concentration and the sex of an individual or stage of reproductive maturity, suggesting that these squids are not storing lipid in the digestive gland for use in fuelling reproductive maturation or providing an energy source for oocytes. I believe this study is the first to combine proximal analysis and quantitative histological techniques to examine the role of the squid digestive gland with respect to non-structural lipids. The results indicate that the digestive gland of these tropical loliginid squids is excreting, not storing, excess dietary lipid.  相似文献

The reproductive state of six populations of the commercial sea urchin P. lividus was investigated. Specimens were sampled monthly from six sites of southern Spain. The development of the gonad during the period of study was measured using histological methods and categorised by four stages for females and two for male specimens. A Gonadosomatic Index was also established. The six populations exhibited similar reproductive patterns, having mature gonads during almost all months while reconstitution and spent were present mainly in autumn. The population from Sancti Petri had the highest Gonadosomatic Index value. Higher food availability may explain this difference.  相似文献

Four annual reproductive cycles were followed in the echinoid, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (Stimpson), at three places on the central Oregon coast near 44°45′N lat., where intermittent upwelling depresses coastal sea temperatures from June through September. Monthly measurements were made of the gonad index of samples of 30 urchins and the relative frequency of five stages in oogenesis were determined from sectioned ovaries from these samples.Individuals in these populations are synchronous in their annual cycle of gonad growth, oogenesis, and spawning, the latter taking place between late December and March. The population usually undergoes one major, complete spawning within a period of 30 days. When large reserves of stored nutrients are present, ova continue to mature over a longer period and may be present in quantity from December into April. Gonad weight does not change significantly from March through June. From July through November the gonad undergoes its annual growth at a mean instantaneous relative growth rate of ≈ 1 % per day. Gonad growth is not significantly correlated with sea temperature. Variable temperatures resulting from upwelling do not result in erratic fluctuations in the reproductive cycle, probably because of the annual change in feeding rate, the seasonal shift in energy utilization, and the constancy of the amount of food assimilated during gonad growth. Gonad size and annual growth rates may differ significantly between years and locations, indicating that both are influenced by local environmental factors, probably food availability and degree of wave action.The frequency of oogonial clusters is least in mid-winter, increases after spawning, reaches an annual maximum in June and declines in the fall. Primary oocyte growth is very slow until October, when it increases abruptly, and some oocytes become ova as early as late October. When stored nutrients are low, many oocytes do not complete growth by January, and are not spawned until May. Prolongation of the spawning period delays the increase in frequency of oogonial clusters in the following new cycle. The timing of the annual increase in oogonial cluster frequency and of the onset of rapid oocyte growth did not otherwise vary between places and years. In these populations, entrainment or synchronization of the reproductive cycle to seasonal environmental events probably occurs at the beginning of one or all of these critical annual events: oogonial proliferation, annual gonad growth and rapid oocyte growth.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction by fission were studied in four populations of Coscinasterias calamaria (Gray), two in Otago Harbour in the South Island of New Zealand and two in the North Island near Auckland. The annual reproductive cycle in both islands of New Zealand is clearly defined with a spawning season between November and January. In both sites the pyloric caeca index was approximately inverse to the gonad index cycle as found in other forcipulate asteroids. There are substantial differences in the sex ratios of mature starfish at each site studied, with 1:1 ratios in two populations, one population heavily biased towards females and the fourth consisting almost entirely of males. Morphometric variation in arm number due to splitting was studied and the frequency of splitting varied considerably between the four populations. Generally speaking sublittoral C. calamaria divide less frequently than intertidal starfish and populations in which food is less abundant or of poorer quality are more fissiparous and put less energy into sexual reproduction, than populations with plentiful readily available food in the form of mussels. The significance of the different reproductive patterns in C. calamaria is discussed.  相似文献
