Summary There is a range of egg size phenotypes in Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) that has a large genetic component. It was hypothesized that egg size variation could play an important role in survival of newly hatched ducklings during their first few days out of the nest when they are most susceptible to thermal stress and starvation. Precocial young must be physiologically capable of maintaining homeothermy in order to spend adequate time foraging. Duckling size at hatching was highly correlated with egg mass, and those hatching from heavier eggs were able to maintain homeothermy at colder environmental temperatures than those from lighter eggs. Heavy ducklings had significantly lower mass-specific cooling rates, but lower critical temperature did not vary significantly among ducklings of different size. Although insulation and energy reserves were not proportionally greater in larger ducklings, those hatching from heavier eggs can survive starvation longer than those from lighter eggs. The relative cold tolerance of young from light and heavy eggs will affect the ratio of time spent foraging to time spent being brooded by the female parent. Although there is no direct evidence that selection is acting on egg size, variation in this trait within a population could be maintained by fluctuating environmental conditions at hatch.  相似文献

A marine Pseudomonas sp. S9 produced and released an extracellular polysaccharide during complete energy and nutrient starvation in static conditions. The presence of the polysaccharide on the cell surface, demonstrable by immune transmission electron microscopy, correlated with changes in the degree of adhesion to hydrophobic surfaces. Polysaccharide coated cells showed a lower degree of adhesion than did cells devoid of the polymer. After 10 h of starvation, no ruthenium red stained antibody stabilized polysaccharides could be observed on the cell surface. The polysaccharide was not produced during growth since lysates of mid-log phase cells did not precipitate the antiserum. The relative proportions of sugars in the polysaccharide were 28% glucose, 35% N-acetylglucosamine and 37% N-acetylgalactosamine. The released polysaccharide did not significantly alter the physical parameters of surface tension and viscosity of the starvation regime. Cells starved in agitated conditions did not produce any extracellular polysaccharides and exhibited a different adhesion pattern to hydrophobic surfaces.Non-standard abbreviations FSS Four salt solution - GLC gas liquid chromatography - MS Mass spectrometry - NSS nine salt solution  相似文献

The relationships of larval nutritional resources with adult body size, starvation resistance and reproductive decisions are not always clear. Burying beetle larvae with inadequate nutrition are hypothesized to develop into relatively large adults that are able to contest for breeding resources. The trade‐off is that the emerging adult has minimal energy reserves and is more susceptible to starvation, and must gain proportionately more weight after emerging. These hypotheses are investigated in Nicrophorus orbicollis Say. In addition, sex differences in size–mass ratios as well as starvation and recovery in reproductively mature females are examined. The larval mass to adult size ratio is similar in male and female N. Orbicollis and, contrary to prediction, small larvae do not result in adults that are relatively large in size for their mass. Emerging adults of lesser mass resist starvation less well, as expected. Emerging adults of smaller pronotal size gain more relative mass but less absolute mass than larger adults. In reproductively mature adult females, recovery from food deprivation is rapid, with most if not all the weight that is lost during a 9–10‐day starvation period being re‐gained within 1 day of engorging. The ability to gain weight rapidly and regulate body mass provides a nutritional framework for understanding the larva to adult transition and the reproductive and parenting decisions of burying beetles that otherwise would appear to be of too high risk.  相似文献

Comparative microbial functions in the plant root zone were studied by evaluating rhizosphere-derivedPseudomonas andArthrobacter growth in chemostat culture and responses to root-exudate-related nutrients after varied starvation periods. These organisms were chosen to represent zymogenous and autochthonous microbes, respectively. In chemostat culture, thePseudomonas isolate showed increased energy charge and decreased populations with higher growth rates, whereas theArthrobacter had lower energy charge and cell population values which did not change appreciably with growth rate. The responses of these two types of organisms also differed with starvation. ThePseudomonas lost its ability to respire efficiently in the presence of several known root exudate components, whereas theArthrobacter isolate, in comparison, maintained a lower but more consistent ability to utilize these nutrients with increased starvation. TheArthrobacter also showed increased utilization of several substrates after starvation, suggesting its potential ability to function under restricted nutrient availability conditions. These results suggest thatPseudomonas-type organisms in the rhizosphere may best function in periods of more intense exudate release, whereas organisms of theArthrobacter- type may be more efficient at nutrient utilization during periods of lesser nutrient flux. Based on these data the rhizosphere-derivedPseudomonas isolate was considered to be an appropriate bacterium to use in more complex rhizosphere microcosm experiments where nutrient flux dynamics would be emphasized.  相似文献

The ruminal, cellulolytic bacterium, Fibrobacter succinogenes A3C, grew rapidly on cellulose, cellobiose, or glucose, but it could not withstand long periods of energy source starvation. If ammonia was limiting and either cellobiose or glucose was in excess, the viability declined even faster. The carbohydrate-excess, ammonia-limited cultures did not spill energy, but they accumulated large amounts of cellular polysaccharide. Cultures that were carbohydrate-limited had approximately 4 nmol ATP mg cell protein–1, but ATP could not be detected in cultures that had an excess of soluble carbohydrates. However, if F. succinogenes A3C was provided with excess cellulose and ammonia was limiting, ATP did not decline, and the cultures digested the cellulose soon after additional nitrogen sources were added. From these results, it appears that excess soluble carbohydrates can promote the death of F. succinogenes, but cellulose does not.  相似文献

Energy homeostasis is an essential characteristic of all organisms, requiring fluctuation in energy accumulation, mobilization, and exchange with the external environment. In insects, energy mobilization is under control of the lipase brummer (bmm), which regulates nutritional status by hydrolyzing the ester bonds in triacylglycerol (TAG). In the present study, we investigated the role of bmm in the lipid mobilization and starvation resistance in the brown planthopper (BPH; Nilaparvata lugens), which is economically one of the most important rice pests in Asia. A severe decrease in TAG and glyceride contents was observed in the starved BPHs, while there was a partial rescue after refeeding. The starvation condition caused a significant increase in the expression levels of Nlbmm, and supplement of food after starvation dramatically reduced the Nlbmm expression. Sucrose rescue after starvation significantly suppressed the expression of Nlbmm, while caused an accumulation of TAG and glyceride. Knockdown of Nlbmm by double‐stranded RNA treatment extended the lifespan to starvation, whereas it increased the level of TAG and glyceride in the BPHs. The decreased lipolysis rate by dsNlbmm‐treated BPHs eventually resulted in increase of starvation resistance. These data demonstrated that the regulation of energy homeostasis by Nlbmm affects starvation resistance, probably through lipid mobilization control in N. lugens.  相似文献

The chemosensory detection of prey by the freshwater leech Nephelopsis obscura (Erpobdellidae) was investigated in the laboratory. Without direct tactile contact N. obscura of all three size classes tested were unable to detect and react to any of the prey types (Gammarus lacustris, Chironomus sp., Tubifex sp) or prey conditions (live, asphyxiated, homogenate) tested. The length of the starvation period (0–56 days) did not affect these results, nor did it increase activity. N. obscura thus appears to be an opportunistic wanderer rather than a stalker-hunter.  相似文献

Synopsis Chronically starved rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) showed a significant fall in liver size, total liver glycogen, liver glycogen concentration and plasma glucose levels. Liver lipid concentration did not differ significantly from controls although total liver lipid reserves fell during the first 40 days of starvation but had partly recovered after 65 days of starvation. Plasma cortisol and T3 levels did not show consistent changes concomitant with food deprivation over the 65 day period of the experiment. However, plasma T4 levels in fish starved for 40 or 65 days were significantly lower than comparably fed animals. The involvement of T4 in intermediate metabolic processes in salmonids is discussed.  相似文献

We experimentally tested the hypothesis that energy reserve depletion varies inversely with size in the fish Menidia menidia, an estuarine fish known to exhibit size-dependent winter mortality. Individuals in two size groups were starved at two winter temperatures (4°and 8°C) and sacrificed at a range of time intervals (up to 127 days). Lipid levels and lean tissue were analyzed to estimate somatic energy storage. As predicted, energy depletion was greater at high temperatures, and proportionally greater in small than in large fish. After 60 days of starvation at 4°C, small fish retained an average of 67% of their original energy reserves (vs 53% at 8°C), while large fish retained an average of 80% (vs 66% at 8°C). At 4°C, fish that were fed depleted their energy reserves as rapidly as unfed fish, but at 8°C, fish that were fed maintained reserves at higher levels than unfed fish. A high proportion of unfed fish (56% at 4°C, 27% at 8°C) died before they were to be sacrificed. Survival probability did not vary with size, nor was it influenced by the amount of energy reserves. The rate of energy depletion (equivalent to routine metabolic rate) decreased gradually over time, particularly in small fish. Routine metabolism did not conform to a single scaling relationship. Within each temperature-size group, the routine rate declined more rapidly than metabolically active mass (lean mass). At 8°C, the difference between size groups in energy depletion rate conformed closely to the expected allometry exponent of 0.8. In contrast, at 4°C, the estimated allometry exponent increased over the experiment (−0.19 to 2.5). We conclude that strategies to minimize energy loss may often modify bioenergetic scaling relationships. Received: 30 September 1998 / Accepted: 10 February 1999  相似文献

Macroautophagy/autophagy is a self-degradation process that combats starvation. Lipids are the main energy source in kidney proximal tubular cells (PTCs). During starvation, PTCs increase fatty acid (FA) uptake, form intracellular lipid droplets (LDs), and hydrolyze them for use. The involvement of autophagy in lipid metabolism in the kidney remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the autophagy-mediated regulation of renal lipid metabolism during prolonged starvation using PTC-specific Atg5-deficient (atg5-TSKO) mice and an in vitro serum starvation model. Twenty-four h of starvation comparably induced LD formation in the PTCs of control and atg5-TSKO mice; however, additional 24 h of starvation reduced the number of LDs in control mice, whereas increases were observed in atg5-TSKO mice. Autophagic degradation of LDs (lipophagy) in PTCs was demonstrated by electron microscopic observation and biochemical analysis. In vitro pulse-chase assays demonstrated that lipophagy mobilizes FAs from LDs to mitochondria during starvation, whereas impaired LD degradation in autophagy-deficient PTCs led to decreased ATP production and subsequent cell death. In contrast to the in vitro assay, despite impaired LD degradation, kidney ATP content was preserved in 48-h starved atg5-TSKO mice, probably due to increased utilization of ketone bodies. This compensatory mechanism was accompanied by a higher plasma FGF21 (fibroblast growth factor 21) level and its expression in the PTCs; however, this was not essential for the production of ketone bodies in the liver during prolonged starvation. In conclusion, lipophagy combats prolonged starvation in PTCs to avoid cellular energy depletion.  相似文献

Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonosis. The importance of urban leptospirosis is recognized in Japan: urban rats carry pathogenic leptospires and people acquire these pathogens through contact with surface water or soil contaminated by the urine of the infected animals. To determine the current Leptospira carriage rate in urban rats, 29 wild rats were trapped in the central area of Fukuoka and strains isolated from their kidneys and urine analyzed. When semi‐solid Korthof's medium containing 0.1% agar was used for isolation, 72.2% and 30.8% of the kidney and urine cultures, respectively, were found to be Leptospira‐positive. The isolates belonged to Leptospira interrogans, and were classified into two groups (serogroups Pomona and Icterohaemorrhagiae) based on the results of gyrB sequence analysis and microscopic agglutination testing (MAT). Strains belonging to serogroup Icterohemorrhagiae grew well in liquid medium. On the other hand, serogroup Pomona isolates multiplied very little in liquid medium, but did grow in a semi‐solid medium. Although strains belonging to serogroup Pomona have not been recognized as native to Japan, this strain may be widely distributed in urban rats. Representative strains from each group were found to be highly pathogenic to hamsters. Our findings should serve as a warning that it is still possible to become infected with leptospires from wild rats living in inner cities of Japan. Furthermore, the use of semi‐solid medium for culture will improve the isolation rate of leptospires from the kidneys of wild rats.  相似文献

Rhinogobius sp. CB is a common amphidromous goby in Japan. I investigated egg and clutch sizes along a river course and within a spawning season in the Aizu River, Kii Peninsula, Japan. Clutch size within the same female size did not differ along the course of the river, but decreased from early to later in the spawning season. Egg size within the same female size decreased from early to later in the spawning season and from the upper to the lower reaches. These results mean energy resources allocated to the ovary decreased seasonally and locally. Several factors are presented to explain these variations, such as female somatic conditions, a tradeoff between reproduction and growth, food availability, water temperature, and presence of competitive species. Some factors explaining the seasonal and local variations in egg size, such as water temperature and food availability for offspring, are also presented. Egg size correlated well with female size. The trend in egg size variation with female size seems to be an adaptation for their migrating pattern, as larvae from larger female, which tended to inhabit the upper reaches, would have a greater endurance against starvation during their migration to the sea.  相似文献

Differences in adult oviposition behavior of the aphidophagous hover flies Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer) and Eupeodes corollae (F.) (Diptera: Syrphidae) led us to formulate and test hypotheses concerning their larval behaviour. In laboratory experiments, larval E. balteatus lived longer when starved than larval E. corollae, and this difference increased with age at which starvation commenced. Larval E. balteatus crawled faster than larval E. corollae, and this difference increased under starvation. Limited aphid supply reduced larval and pupal survival more for E. corollae than for E. balteatus. However, the effect of limited aphid supply on adult body size did not differ for the two species. E. balteatus oviposition and larval behavior make it a more promising candidate for introducing to control Diuraphis noxia (Mordwilko) (Homoptera: Aphididae) where this aphid has become an exotic pest.  相似文献

Effects of respiratory activity on starvation survival of marine vibrios   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The marine bacterium Vibrio fluvialis NCTC11328 responded to nutrient depletion by a reduction in cell volume, and this was prevented by conditions that eliminated respiration as a source of energy. Addition of the protonophore, CCCP, removal of oxygen and introduction of mutations leading to defects of the respiratory chain prevented size reduction during periods of nutrient limitation. Further, survival of the wild-type strain during starvation was reduced under anaerobic conditions and survival of respiratory mutants under aerobic conditions was reduced compared with that of the parent strain. Removal by mutation of the respiratory Na+ pump from Vibrio alginolyticus did not inhibit size reduction or lead to reduced viability in starved cultures.Abbreviations ANa medium A containing 0.4 M sodium chloride - ANaS ANa containing 50 mM sodium succinate - CCCP carbonyl cyanide-m-chlorophenylhydrazone - CFU colony forming units - FMNH flavine mononucleotide - MMS modified Morita's salts solution - MMSGC MMS containing 20 mM glucose and 0.1% (w/v) casamino acids - MMST MMS buffered to pH 8.5 with 50 mM tricine - NM nutrient Morita's broth - Ox oxidase - DH dehydrogenase - NTG N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine  相似文献

Trehalose is a major blood sugar in insects with a range of physiological functions, including an energy source and a cryoprotectant. Hemolymph trehalose concentrations are tightly regulated according to physiological conditions. An insulin‐like peptide, SeILP1, downregulates hemolymph trehalose concentrations in Spodoptera exigua. Here, we identified a factor that upregulates hemolymph trehalose concentration in S. exigua. Hemolymph trehalose concentrations were significantly increased after immune challenge or under starvation in a time‐dependent manner. To determine endocrine factors responsible for the upregulation, stress‐associated mediators, such as octopamine, serotonin, or eicosanoids were injected, but they did not upregulate hemolymph trehalose. On the other hand, injection with Schistocerca gregaria adipokinetic hormone (AKH) significantly increased hemolymph trehalose concentration in S. exigua. During upregulation of hemolymph trehalose by AKH injection, trehalose degradation appeared to be inhibited because expression of trehalase and SeILP1 were significantly suppressed while that of trehalose phosphate synthase was not significantly changed. Interrogation of a Spodoptera genome database identified an S. exigua AKH‐like gene and its expression was confirmed. During starvation, its expression concentrations were increased, although RNA interference specific to the AKH‐like hypertrehalosemic factor (SeHTF) gene significantly prevented the upregulation of hemolymph trehalose concentrations during starvation. A synthetic peptide of SeHTF was prepared and injected into S. exigua larvae. At nanomolar concentration, the synthetic SeHTF peptide effectively upregulated hemolymph trehalose concentrations. Here we report a novel hypertrehalosemic factor in S. exigua (SeHTF).  相似文献

Synopsis Newly hatched amphidromous Rhinogobius sp. CB (cross band type) larvae drift downstream to the sea to grow and develop before returning upstream as juveniles. Since larger and older individuals usually inhabit the upper reaches of rivers, larvae from larger females are more likely to suffer higher risks of starvation or predation during their longer migration to the sea. We examined the relationship between reproductive parameters (egg volume and clutch size) and maternal length. We collected adult Rhinogobius sp. CB along the course of the Aizu River (Wakayama Prefecture, Japan) and spawned them under laboratory conditions. We measured egg volumes and clutch sizes, as well as larval starvation tolerance. Both egg volume and clutch size increased with standard length or age of the maternal fish, while egg density in these clusters did not correlate with standard length. Gonad-somatic index (GSI) also tended to increase with maternal standard length. There was a significant positive correlation between egg size and the 72-h survival rate of unfed hatchlings. Intra-specific variation of egg volumes and clutch sizes in this species seems to be an adaptation for enhancing offspring survivorship during migration to the sea. Some females spawned a second time. Second spawned egg sizes were smaller than first spawned egg sizes, although there was no difference in clutch size between the two. Egg size variation between subsequent spawns may be an adjustment to the changes in seasonal environmental conditions.  相似文献

The effect of starvation and subsequent re‐feeding to satiation on compensatory growth performance, insulin and blood serum values were investigated in juvenile Persian sturgeon (Acipencer persicus) with an average weight 108.04 ± 0.28 g (mean ± SEM) and in the same rearing condition over an 8‐week period. Sturgeons were allocated to one of five feeding treatments: controls (C, continuous feeding), W1 (1 week starvation), W2 (2 weeks starvation), W3 (3 weeks starvation) and W4 (4 weeks starvation), followed by a single 4 weeks of re‐feeding to satiation. Changes in growth performance and blood serum indices were examined at the end of weeks 4 and 8. Body weight, specific growth rate (SGR), condition factor (CF) and weight gain were determined to have significantly decreased during starvation. Fish starved for 1 week reached the same weight as the control fish after re‐feeding for 4 weeks, indicating that complete compensatory growth occurred. Although the specific growth rate in W2, W3 and W4 fish was greater than that in the control fish after re‐feeding, W2, W3 and W4 fish did not reach the same body weight as control fish at the end of re‐feeding period, and showed partial compensation only. Blood plasma, glucose and insulin concentrations did not change significantly during starvation and re‐feeding (P > 0.05). This suggests that sturgeon are able to maintain glycaemia during starvation, probably due to their non‐carbohydrate dietary source. Plasma total lipid and triglyceride levels increased in starvation treatments, whereas the increases were significant only in W3 treatment (P < 0.05). After a 4‐week re‐feeding period, their levels decreased in comparison to the starvation periods. Increases in plasma total lipid and triglyceride levels appear to be due to their roles as preferred nutrients for mobilization in Persian sturgeon and the magnitude and duration of compensatory growth depended on the length of food deprivation.  相似文献

Iron starvation induced marked increases in flavodoxin abundance and decreases in light-saturated and light-limited photosynthesis rates in the diatom Chaetoceros muelleri. Consistent with the substitution of flavodoxin for ferredoxin as an early response to iron starvation, increases of flavodoxin abundance were observed before declines of cell division rate or chl a specific photosynthesis rates. Changes in the abundance of flavodoxin after the addition of iron to iron-starved cells indicated that flavodoxin was not actively degraded under iron-replete conditions. Greater declines in light-saturated oxygen evolution rates than dark oxygen consumption rates indicated that the mitochondrial electron transfer chain was not affected as greatly by iron starvation as the photosynthetic electron transfer chain. The carbon:nitrogen ratio was unaffected by iron starvation, suggesting that photosynthetic electron transfer was a primary target of iron starvation and that reductions in nitrate assimilation were due to energy limitation (the C:N ratio would be expected to rise under nitrogen-limited but energy-replete conditions). Parallel changes were observed in the maximum light-saturated photosynthesis rate and the light-limited initial slope of the photosynthesis-light curve during iron starvation and recovery. The lowest photosynthesis rates were observed in iron-starved cells and the highest values in iron-replete cells. The light saturation parameter, Ik, was not affected by iron starvation, nor was the chl-to-C ratio markedly reduced. These observations were consistent with iron starvation having a similar or greater effect on photochemical charge separation in PSII than on downstream electron transfer steps. Declines of the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence in iron-starved cells were consistent with PSII being a primary target of iron starvation. The functional cross-section of PSII was affected only marginally (<20%) by iron starvation, with the largest values observed in iron-starved cells. The rate constant for electron transfer calculated from fast repetition rate fluorescence was found to covary with the light-saturated photosynthesis rate; it was lowest in the most severely starved cells.  相似文献

Dry weight at eclosion, adult lifespan, lifetime fecundity, lipid and carbohydrate content at eclosion, and starvation and desiccation resistance at eclosion were assayed on a long-term laboratory population ofDrosophila melanogaster, and one recently wild-caught population each of four other species ofDrosophila, two from themelanogaster and two from theimmigrans species group. The relationships among trait means across the five species did not conform to expectations based on correlations among these traits inferred from selection studies onD. melanogaster. In particular, the expected positive relationships between fecundity and size/lipid content, lipid content and starvation resistance, carbohydrate (glycogen) content and desiccation resistance, and the expected negative relationship between lifespan and fecundity were not observed. Most traits were strongly positively correlated between sexes across species, except for fractional lipid content and starvation resistance per microgram lipid. For most traits, there was evidence for significant sexual dimorphism but the degree of dimorphism did not vary across species except in the case of adult lifespan, starvation resistance per microgram lipid, and desiccation resistance per microgram carbohydrate. Overall,D. nasuta nasuta andD. sulfurigaster neonasuta (immigrans group) were heavier at eclosion than themelanogaster group species, and tended to have somewhat higher absolute lipid content and starvation resistance. Yet, these twoimmigrans group species were shorter-lived and had lower average daily fecundity than themelanogaster group species. The smallest species,D. malerkotliana (melanogaster group), had relatively high daily fecundity, intermediate lifespan and high fractional lipid content, especially in females.D. ananassae (melanogaster group) had the highest absolute and fractional carbohydrate content, but its desiccation resistance per microgram carbohydrate was the lowest among the five species. In terms of overall performance, the laboratory population ofD. melanogaster was clearly superior, under laboratory conditions, to the other four species if adult lifespan, lifetime fecundity, average daily fecundity, and absolute starvation and desiccation resistance are considered. This finding is contrary to several recent reports of substantially higher adult lifespan and stress resistance in recently wild-caught flies, relative to flies maintained for a long time in discretegeneration laboratory cultures. Possible explanations for these apparent anomalies are discussed in the context of the differing selection pressures likely to be experienced byDrosophila populations in laboratory versus wild environments. This paper is dedicated to the memory of our friend and former colleague Dr Hans Raj Negi, who tragically passed away at a very young age in a road accident in November 2003.  相似文献
