Ancyronyx buhid sp. n. and Ancyronyx tamaraw sp. n. are described based on adults and larvae, matched using their cox1 or cob DNA sequence data. Additional records of Ancyronyx schillhammeri Jäch, 1994 and Ancyronyx minerva Freitag & Jäch, 2007 from Mindoro are listed. The previously unknown larva of Ancyronyx schillhammeri is also described here, aided by cox1 data. The new species and larval stages are described in detail and illustrated by SEM and stacked microscopic images. Keys to the adult and larval Ancyronyx species of Mindoro and an updated checklist of Philippine Ancyronyx species are provided. The usefulness as bioindicators, the phylogenetic relationships and biogeographic aspects affecting the distribution patterns are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Time-series data collected over a four-year period were used to characterize patterns of abundance for pelagic fishes in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) before (2007–2009) and after (2010) the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Four numerically dominant pelagic species (blackfin tuna, blue marlin, dolphinfish, and sailfish) were included in our assessment, and larval density of each species was lower in 2010 than any of the three years prior to the oil spill, although larval abundance in 2010 was often statistically similar to other years surveyed. To assess potential overlap between suitable habitat of pelagic fish larvae and surface oil, generalized additive models (GAMs) were developed to evaluate the influence of ocean conditions on the abundance of larvae from 2007–2009. Explanatory variables from GAMs were then linked to environmental data from 2010 to predict the probability of occurrence for each species. The spatial extent of surface oil overlapped with early life habitat of each species, possibly indicating that the availability of high quality habitat was affected by the DH oil spill. Shifts in the distribution of spawning adults is another factor known to influence the abundance of larvae, and the spatial occurrence of a model pelagic predator (blue marlin) was characterized over the same four-year period using electronic tags. The spatial extent of oil coincided with areas used by adult blue marlin from 2007–2009, and the occurrence of blue marlin in areas impacted by the DH oil spill was lower in 2010 relative to pre-spill years.  相似文献

Based on a comparative molecular study of scarab chafers we matched adult and larval instars to identify and describe unknown larvae of Sericini. Here, we use for the first time a two‐fold DNA taxonomy approach based on: (i) mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers of a local sample (from Nepal) of adults and larvae, in combination with character and tree‐based species delimitation methods; and (ii) a global search of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) sequences with GenBank data. In the latter analysis we used a sequence of a specimen that resulted in the first analysis conspecific with the larvae of Maladera affinis (Blanchard) as the query sequence in GenBank, and checked in a minimum evolution tree whether larva–adult matches from the local approach were altered through interference with other taxa of the worldwide database. Both approaches unambiguously identified the unknown larvae as belonging to M. affinis and Maladera cardoni (Brenske). Based on this robust framework of taxonomic identification we could associate names to the larval morphology of the third larval instar of these two Nepalese Maladera species, which are both known for their economical importance in agriculture. They are described here in detail and are compared with known related taxa, especially with Maladera castanea (Arrow).  相似文献

Male specimens of the sea spider species Nymphon unguiculatum, carrying eggs, larvae and postlarvae in various stages of development, were collected off the South Shetland Island at water depths between 112 and 472 m in austral summer 2006/2007. Here, we describe the external morphology of four postembryonic stages (protonymphon, instar 1, instar 2, and instar 3) carried by these specimens. We found that (1) protonymphon larvae hatch from the eggs; (2) larvae and postlarval stages have yolk reserves and are characterized by a relatively large size (average body lengths of 0.46, 0.55, 0.65 and 0.73 mm in the successive stages); (3) postlarvae remain on the ovigerous legs of males during several moults; (4) a spinning apparatus is present; (5) the development of walking legs is sequential. The larval and postlarval development of N. unguiculatum is compared with that known from other pycnogonid species.  相似文献

Populations of the sand crab, Emerita analoga, are well establishedon the California coast. However, populations in Oregon occursporadically and appear to be restocked by larvae drifting northfrom California. Due to increased northward transport in winterduring El Niño events, we would expect that larval recruitmentto northern populations should be higher during these periods.This hypothesis was tested by comparing larval abundances betweennon-El Niño and El Niño years, 1997 and 1998,respectively. In 1997, larval abundances and seasonality weresimilar to historical data from 1969–71. First zoeal (Z1)stage larvae were present during these summers, but in low numbers,indicating that E.analoga spawned off the coast of Oregon. In1998, strong larval recruitment from the south occurred, demonstratedby a large number of fifth zoeal stage (Z5) larvae collectedoff Oregon in April and May. The large numbers of Z1 found insummer 1998 indicate that the Z5, which arrived from Californiaearlier that spring, successfully recruited to adulthood andreproduced. These data indicate that Oregon E.analoga populationsare probably dependent on larvae travelling from Californiain the Davidson Current. It follows that this species couldbe used as an indicator of coastal current fluctuations suchas those seen during El Niño events.  相似文献

The early life history of the viviparous scorpaenid,Sebastes inermis, in Sendai Bay, Japan, was studied and early development described. Newborn preflexion larvae ofS. inermis were about 5.2 mm BL. Notochord flexion occurred at 5.4–8.0 mm BL and transformation at 14–20 mm BL. Preflexion and flexion larvae ofS. inermis were distinguished from similar larvae by the pigmentation pattern along the dorsal and ventral midlines of the tail. Pigmentation inS. inermis was light throughout the larval and early juvenile periods. Planktonic larvae were particularly abundant in coastal waters of Sendai Bay but not offshore. Vertical and horizontal larval sampling indicated that early larvae occupied near surface waters and horizontal larval sampling indicated that early larvae shift to a benthic habitat occurred at about 12 mm BL, at the end of the postflexion larval period.Sebastes inermis do not have a distinct pelagic juvenile stage, unlike many North Pacific species ofSebastes.  相似文献

Abstract We investigated the effectiveness of short mitochondrial DNA fragments for the identification of lycid larvae. The rrnL, cox1 and nad5 mtDNA sequences from 17 specimens of immature stages of Lycidae and Lampyridae were combined with a previously published dataset of homologous fragments representing all major lineages of Lycidae and outgroups. Their relationships were analysed under parsimony criteria. We demonstrate that high‐density profiles are necessary for accurate identification of unknown samples to generic and tribal levels and that a multilocus approach is critical for obtaining reliable results. Although widely used, the cox1 mtDNA fragment showed the worst performance for identification at genus level when the query species was not present in the library. Stronger support for deeper branches came from rrnL mtDNA. The neotenic female larvae and male adult stages of Platerodrilus sp. and Macrolibnetis depressus Pic, 1938 were associated by mtDNA fragments. Based on the present identification, larvae of Dictyopterini (Dictyopterini gen. sp., Dictyoptera aurora Herbst, 1784), Sulabanus sp., Leptotrichalus sp. (Metriorrhynchini) and Macrolibnetis depressus Pic, 1938 (Platerodrilini) are described for the first time. Further species of Platycis Thomson, 1859, Plateros Bourgeois, 1979, Macrolycus Waterhouse, 1878, Cautires Waterhouse, 1879 and Lyponia Waterhouse, 1878 are identified by morphology and molecular markers. The data on larval morphology and their usefulness for classification are discussed.  相似文献

The moth Omphisa fuscidentalis (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) is a univoltine insect with a larval diapause period lasting up to 9 months. We studied changes in O(2) consumption in conjunction with cytochrome c oxidase activity and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) gene expression. O(2) consumption changed within a day, showing a supradian rhythm with a ca.12-h cycle at 25 degrees C. During the first two-thirds of the diapause period, from October to March, O(2) consumption was constant until January and then increased by March. Topical application of methoprene, a juvenile hormone analog (JHA), to diapausing larvae terminated the diapause and was associated with an increase in O(2) consumption rate at diapause termination. In JHA-treated larvae, cytochrome c oxidase activity in fat bodies was high at the beginning of the prepupal period and highest at pupation. cox1 expression in fat bodies displayed a transient peak 8 days after JHA application and peaked in the prepupal period. Taken together, our results show that the break of diapause by JHA is associated with the activation of cox1, bringing about an increase in cytochrome c oxidase activity, followed by an increase in O(2) consumption rate.  相似文献

Abstract. Larvae of the staphylinid subfamily Trichophyinae are described for the first time based on larvae of a new species of Trichophya from the southwestern United States. Adults and larvae of the new species, Trichophya texana Ashe & Newton (type locality Texas, Brewster Co., Big Bend National Park), are described and illustrations of both provided. Also given are a key for separation of the Nearctic species of Trichophya , a checklist of the known World fauna of the Trichophyinae (including first report of the genus from Mexico and Guatemala), and a characterization of the subfamily Trichophyinae based on both larvae and adults. The relationships of major genera and higher taxa in the tachyporine group of staphylinid subfamilies are analysed cladistically using larval characters. No larval characters were found that provide evidence for the monophyly of the tachyporine group; no evidence was found for the monophyly of the Tachyporinae; Charhyphus, Olisthaerus and Phloeocharis (Phloeocharinae + Olisthaerinae) form a monophyletic group; the Trichophyinae and Habrocerinae are sister groups and together probably are the sister group to the Aleocharinae; the Aleocharinae are confirmed to be monophyletic based on larval characters; and Gymnusa + Deinopsis form the sister group to the remainder of the Aleocharinae.  相似文献

Identifying the sex of larvae is important in social Hymenoptera. Until now for Polistes wasps it has been necessary to genotype larvae at microsatellite loci, and assign their sex based on homozygosity at these loci. In our study on the paper wasp Polistes dominulus we have found morphological differences between larval sexes that can be used for larvae from the 3rd instar on to easily and cheaply identify larval sex: the external gonopore and the shape and size of larval gonads. The robustness of these indicators was supported by genotype data at four microsatellite loci. Using gonopore and gonad features for sex assignment will assign diploid males as males, unlike techniques based on genetic loci or chromosomes. The distribution of the genus Barbadocladius Cranston & Krosch (Diptera: Chironomidae), previously reported from Chile to Bolivia, has extended northwards. Larvae, pupae and pupal exuviae of this genus have been found in the high mountain tropical streams of Peru to 9°22′56″, but are restricted to very high altitude streams (altitudes over 3,278 m asl) compared to the lower altitude streams (below 1,100 m asl) in which the genus is reported in Chile and Argentina. Based on morphological studies, both described species in the genus, Barbadocladius andinus Cranston & Krosch and Barbadocladius limay Cranston & Krosch, have been found in Peru as pupae or pupal exuviae. Morphological analysis of the larvae and pupae revealed no differences between the two described species from Patagonia and Peru, which are of similar size and with a similar armament of hooklets and spines in pupal tergites and sternites. However, molecular analysis of larvae and pupae revealed that in Peru, there are at least two different evolutionary lines, one distributed widely and another restricted to one site. Phylogenetic analysis (using cox1 mitochondrial sequences) of all available sequences of Barbadocladius shows that the Chilean and Argentinean material differs from that of Peru. Therefore, a total of four molecular segregates are identified, although morphologically, neither larvae nor the pupae may be differentiated.  相似文献

Abstract. Torsion is a process in gastropod ontogenesis where the visceral body portion rotates 180° relative to the head/foot region. We investigated this process in the limpet Patella caerulea by using light microscopy of living larvae, as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of larvae fixed during the torsion process. The completion of the 180° twist takes considerably less time in larvae of Patella caerulea than previously described for other basal gastropod species. At a rearing temperature of 20–22°C, individuals complete ontogenetic torsion in ?2 h. Furthermore, the whole process is monophasic, i.e., carried out at a constant speed, without any evidence of distinct ‘fast” or ‘slow” phases. Both larval shell muscles—the main and the accessory larval retractor—are already fully contractile before the onset of torsion. During the torsion process both retractors perform cramp‐like contractions at ~30 s intervals, which are followed by hydraulic movements of the foot. However, retraction into the embryonic shell occurs only after torsion is completed. The formation of the larval operculum is entirely in‐dependent from ontogenetic torsion and starts before the onset of rotation, as does the mineralization of the embryonic shell. The reported variability regarding the timing (mono‐ versus biphasic; duration) of torsion in basal gastropod species precludes any attempt to interpret these data phylogenetically. The present findings indicate that the torsion process in Patella caerulea, and probably generally in basal gastropods, is primarily caused by contraction of the larval shell muscles in combination with hydraulic activities. In contrast, the adult shell musculature, which is independently formed after torsion is completed, does not contribute to ontogenetic torsion in any way. Thus, fossil data relying on muscle scars of adult shell muscles alone appear inappropriate to prove torted or untorted conditions in early Paleozoic univalved molluses. Therefore, we argue that paleontological studies dealing with gastropod phylogeny require data other than those based on fossilized attachment sites of adult shell muscles.  相似文献

Methods for collection and microbiological examination of feces of larval honey bees, Apis mellifera, are described. Feces collected on sterile agar were inoculated onto selective media, some of which were acidified to approximate more closely the pH of larval food and the larval gut. A total of 104 microbial isolates were obtained from fecal collections of 20 larvae, although the feces of 4 of these larvae contained no detectable microbes. Microorganisms isolated in order of frequency were Bacillus spp., Gram-variable pleomorphic bacteria (Achromobacter eurydice?), molds (primarily Penicillia), actinomycetes, Gram-negative bacterial rods, and yeasts. It appears that larvae can become inoculated with microorganisms which are found in adult bees and pollen from ingestion of contaminated food. However, evidence for a constant symbiotic microflora which could contribute significant amounts of biochemicals to larvae is lacking.  相似文献

Reproductive altruism and cooperative brood care are key characteristics of eusocial insects and reasons for their ecological success. Yet, Hymenopteran societies are also the stage for a multitude of intracolonial conflicts. Recently, a conflict between adult and larval colony members over caste fate was described and evidence for overt conflict was uncovered in several bee species. In theory, diploid larvae of many Hymenopteran species should experience strong fitness benefits, if they would be able to change their developmental pathway towards the queen caste. However, larval self-determination potential is low in most advanced eusocial Hymenopterans, because workers often control larval food intake and queenworker caste dimorphisms are generally high. In the ant genus Hypoponera, larvae actively feed on food provided by workers and here we show extremely low queenworker size differences in these ants: the lowest in H. opacior, where fertile wingless (intermorphic) queens weigh on average only 13% more than workers. Thus, slightly better nutrition during development might change the fate of a Hypoponera larva from a completely sterile worker to a fertile queen. One possibility to obtain extra food for Hypoponera larvae with their well-developed mandibles would be to cannibalise adjacent larvae. Indeed, we observed frequently larval cannibalism in ant nests. Yet, adult workers apparently try to prohibit larval cannibalism by carefully separating larvae in the nest. Larvae, which were experimentally brought into close contact, were rapidly set apart. Workers further sorted larvae according to size and responded swiftly to decreasing food levels, by increasing inter-larval distance. Still, an experimental manipulation of the larval cannibalism rate in H. schauinslandi failed to provide conclusive evidence for the link between larval cannibalism and caste development. Hence, further experiments are needed to determine whether the widespread larval cannibalism in Hypoponera and the untypical brood distribution can be explained by an overt caste conflict. This work is based on recent studies describing new species in Spiochaetopterus (Annelida Polychaeta). New morphological features were brought to light in studies of adults from widely separate areas. A parallel study of planktonic larvae in three areas (northern Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of California, Mediterranean Sea) led to the isolation of several larval categories, each related to an already described species. The large number of species already described shows that the founder species has been subjected to an intense adaptive radiation and that in spite of the ability of larvae to disseminate, each species now inhabits only a limited geographical area. Teleplanic larvae are thus not as effective as is generally supposed in controlling the adult area. The new paradigm implies that individuals from widely separate areas belong to species other than Spiochaetopterus costarum. Although larvae of each species are capable of covering long distances, larval transport may be interrupted at various stages of the life cycle for a variety of reasons. The most powerful causes of failure are not linked to the lifespan of planktonic larvae, but rather to constraints on the ability to realize physiological functions, including fecundation. The putative cosmopolitanism of S. costarum, before new species were described, was the result of both inadequate morphological examination and the use of questionable ecological arguments linked to larval dispersal.  相似文献
