Variations in translocation and incorporation of 14C-labeled photosynthate in actively growing vegetative and reproductive tissues of 20-year-old Pinus resinosa trees with time were investigated. Five hours after exposure of 1-year-old needles on second order branches to 14CO2, 90% of the recoverable activity was still in the needles. The 1-year-old bark showed a small amount of activity, but terminal sinks had accumulated little 14C. After 24 hours, activity in the 1-year-old needles decreased to 59% while actively growing terminal and lateral shoots and 2nd year cones had accumulated considerable tracer. Whereas activity in the 1-year-old bark increased, recovery from the 1-year-old wood was only 1.8%. After 1 week, relative activity in the 1-year-old needles had declined to 27%. Recovery of 14C from various sinks was high and in the following order: 2nd year cones > terminal needles > lateral needles > terminal internode > lateral internodes > 1-year-old wood. Ninety per cent of the 14C recovered after 5 hours was in the ethanol-soluble form, but by the end of 1 week only half was in the soluble fraction. Incorporation of tracer into insoluble compounds was high in expanding internodes and in 1-year-old xylem, and low in 2nd year cones. Total activity in the terminal internode generally declined toward the distal end while specific radioactivity increased. Only 5% of the 14C recovered from cones was localized in developing seeds, but specific radioactivity of seeds was higher than in the cone scales and axis.  相似文献

Field surveys were carried out to assess the effects of intra‐tree variation in developing shoot length within and among crown levels on the density and abundance of the balsam shoot‐boring sawfly, Pleroneura brunneicornis Rohwer (Hymenoptera: Xyelidae), in young balsam fir, Abies balsamea (L.) Mill. (Pinaceae). Overall, cardinal direction had no influence on shoot‐borer density or abundance; however, the highest percentage and abundance of bored shoots occurred on intermediate‐sized shoots within the crown (i.e., in the mid‐crown and on the distal‐lateral and medial‐lateral shoots). Comparatively, few shoot borers occurred in the upper or lower crown levels, or on the relatively large terminal shoots within branches. This distribution appears indicative of the higher suitability of intermediate‐sized shoots within hosts for either egg lay or larval performance. Results of this study are most consistent with predictions of the ‘optimal module size’ hypothesis, which posits that herbivore responses to plant module size should reflect the balance of tradeoffs between utilizing relatively large, nutritious shoots vs. small, more easily exploited shoots.  相似文献

A tissue culture technique for rapid vegetative propagation of mature jackfruit trees using apical bud cultures has been developed. Shoot-tip cultures were established on MS medium with 5–10 mm explants dissected from terminal buds of new growth from trunk. After initial culture of bud explants, one- to two-node pieces were taken from the microshoots formed and used to proliferate further axillary shoots for multiplying and maintaining shoot cultures. Benzyladenine and kinetin (4.5–9.0 µM), either separately or together, supported shoot proliferation; higher concentrations of the cytokinins inhibited bud breaking and favoured callus formation at the explant bases. Bud explants taken from emerging trunk sprouts invariably produced clumps of multiple shoots, whereas buds obtained from actively growing top branches generally elongated to form a solitary shoot. November to January was the best season for initiation of cultures from field-grown trees. Shoots proliferated at the initial subcultures had mature morphology and were difficult-to-root. Shoots assumed to be juvenile-like developed at the later passages and could be rooted with 60–80% success using 1/2-MS salts and 10 µM of indolebutyric acid or naphthaleneacetic acid. Regenerated plantlets were transferred to the soil and about 50% survived.  相似文献

The within-crown distribution of cones (strobili) was mapped on 48 mature grafts of Sitka spruce [Picea schensis (Bong.) Carr.]. The total number of cones per tree was increased by a mainstem injection of 20 mg GA4/7 and 8 mm wide bark ring. The cones and buds were classified as either lateral or terminal on each individual branch. The distribution of lateral female, terminal female, lateral male and terminal male cones, showed a general progression from the upper distal to lower proximal regions of the tree crown in all 12 clones. Evidence for preferential allocation of cones to particular branch types is presented. The region of the tree with the greates number of cones varied with treatment and reflected differences in the sex ratio of the individual trees. There is evidence for a relationship between branch length, position within the crown and the type of cone produced.  相似文献

Backgrounds and Aims

Shoot demography affects the growth of the tree crown and the number of leaves on a tree. Masting may cause inter-annual and spatial variation in shoot demography of mature trees, which may in turn affect the resource budget of the tree. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of masting on the temporal and spatial variations in shoot demography of mature Betula grossa.

Methods

The shoot demography was analysed in the upper and lower parts of the tree crown in mature trees and saplings over 7 years. Mature trees and saplings were compared to differentiate the effect of masting from the effect of exogenous environment on shoot demography. The fate of different shoot types (reproductive, vegetative, short, long), shoot length and leaf area were investigated by monitoring and by retrospective survey using morphological markers on branches. The effects of year and branch position on demographic parameters were evaluated.

Key Results

Shoot increase rate, production of long shoots, bud mortality, length of long shoots and leaf area of a branch fluctuated periodically from year to year in mature trees over 7 years, in which two masting events occurred. Branches within a crown showed synchronized annual variation, and the extent of fluctuation was larger in the upper branches than the lower branches. Vegetative shoots varied in their bud differentiation each year and contributed to the dynamic shoot demography as much as did reproductive shoots, suggesting physiological integration in shoot demography through hormonal regulation and resource allocation.

Conclusions

Masting caused periodic annual variation in shoot demography of the mature trees and the effect was spatially variable within a tree crown. Since masting is a common phenomenon among tree species, annual variation in shoot demography and leaf area should be incorporated into resource allocation models of mature masting trees.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Sex allocation has been studied mainly in small herbaceous plants but much less in monoecious wind-pollinated trees. The aim of this study was to explore changes in gender segregation and sex allocation by Pinus halepensis, a Mediterranean lowland pine tree, within tree crowns and between trees differing in their size or crown shape.

Methods

The production of new male and female cones and sex allocation of biomass, nitrogen and phosphorus were studied. The relationship between branch location, its reproductive status and proxies of branch vigour was also studied.

Key Results

Small trees produced only female cones, but, as trees grew, they produced both male and female cones. Female cones were produced mainly in the upper part of the crown, and male cones in its middle and lower parts. Lateral branch density was correlated with the number of male but not female cones; lateral branches were more dense in large than in small trees and even denser in hemispherical trees. Apical branches grew faster, were thicker and their phosphorus concentration was higher than in lateral shoots. Nitrogen concentration was higher in cone-bearing apical branches than in apical vegetative branches and in lateral branches with or without cones. Allocation to male relative to female function increased with tree size as predicted by sex allocation theory.

Conclusions

The adaptive values of sex allocation and gender segregation patterns in P. halepensis, in relation to its unique life history, are demonstrated and discussed. Small trees produce only female cones that have a higher probability of being pollinated than the probability of male cones pollinating; the female-first strategy enhances population spread. Hemispherical old trees are loaded with serotinous cones that supply enough seeds for post-fire germination; thus, allocation to males is more beneficial than to females.  相似文献

A method was developed for the establishment of shoot cultures from Douglas-fir trees selected for outstanding growth and form in a 12-year-old genetic test. Vegetative buds from the lower crown were sterilized and grafted in vitro onto juvenile clonal rootstock. The rootstocks were produced from adventitious buds induced on cotyledons, and were maintained through micropropagation. Buds that established grafts slowly elongated into shoots, which were harvested and multiplied through micropropagation. Grafts often grew several new shoots which in turn could be harvested. In 1987, 2830 buds were grafted from 18 superior trees. Twenty nine grafts (1%) produced shoots which established 11 of the 18 trees in culture. Their appearance and behavior in vitro became more juvenile over 1–3 years, as indicated by shoot and needle morphology, disappearance of episodic growth pattern, increase in multiplication rates, and ability of needles to produce adventitious buds. The five most prolific of the 11 clones were given a pre-rooting treatment and planted in soil under fog. The success of rooting and subsequent establishment in soil varied from 5 to 17% depending on clone. In contrast, trees multiplied in vitro for 1–2 years longer showed soil establishment rates from 8–60%. This technique allows establishment, multiplication, and maintenance in vitro of cultures from high value Douglas-fir genotypes. Such cultures may serve as a starting point for further research on rejuvenation and cloning.  相似文献

Ten young Lodgepole pine trees were studied for variation in monoterpene composition of the shoot cortical oleoresin due to position within the crown. There was no significant difference between whorls, but small differences occurred between the lateral and terminal shoots of branches. The nature of the differences varied between trees; 3-carene showed the most consistent positional difference.  相似文献

Localized etiolation of branches in the crown of a 30-year-old chestnut tree produced plant material that responded much better to establishment and multiplication in vitro than unetiolated material, whose cultures were very difficult to maintain (response being measured in terms of the percentage of cultures established, the mean number of shoots formed per explant, the number of 8-mm segments per new shoot, the length of longest shoot in each culture, and the coefficient of multiplication). Only 22% of the initial explants from unetiolated material were successfully established, as against 79% for etiolated material, with similar differences between the coefficients of multiplication of the two lines in successive cultures. Accordingly, partial etiolation of branches is proposed as a suitable pretreatment for in vitro propagation of selected mature trees, when physiologically juvenile materials such as stump sprouts, epicormic shoots or root suckers are not available.  相似文献

To understand the influence of seed-cone production on the upper-crown expansion of canopy trees of Abies mariesii Masters, the influence of the annually fluctuating number of seed cones on the terminal-leader length of the main stem and primary branches was analyzed using seed-cone rachises remaining on the terminal leaders of the primary branches. The influence of climatic factors during the period of vegetative-bud growth and shoot elongation was also analyzed. For the upper-crown expansion, factors influencing the number of horizontally elongating branches on the top of the main stem were also examined. According to model fitting, the terminal-leader length of the main stem was negatively influenced by seed-cone production 1 year before shoot elongation. In contrast, the terminal-leader length of the primary branches was not clearly influenced by seed-cone production, but was positively influenced by the mean temperature in September 1 year before shoot elongation and in July in the year of shoot elongation. The number of horizontally elongating branches on the top was positively influenced by the terminal-leader length of the main stem 1 year before horizontal elongation on the top and negatively influenced by seed-cone production 2 years earlier. Thus, in the upper part of the crown, the allocation of photosynthate to seed cones mainly affects the arrangement of needles and seed cones up to the higher positions. This trade-off between seed-cone production and upper-crown expansion influences the canopy shape and reproductive strategy of A. mariesii .  相似文献

Nerve terminals with different length of their branches and with different types of ramification have been studied in the experiments performed on frog cutaneous-pectoralis muscle using electrophysiological and morphological techniques. It has been found that the spatial distribution of the nerve impulse-evoked transmitter secretion along each terminal branch is complex: The secretion increases distalward along the proximal by nearly a third of the terminal length and decreases linearly along its more distal portions. An increase in terminal length is followed by distalward shift of the secretion peak, by more gradual decay in the secretion if plotted along distal portions of the terminal, and by a decreased contribution of the secretion from distal portions to total secretion from the terminal. The critical terminal length at which total secretion from the terminal reached its maximum has been estimated. The distalward decrease of a secretion along the secondary terminal branches is similar to that found in the distal portion of the main terminal branch next to the ramification knot. An increase in terminal length and in the number of branchings is followed by decreased conduction velocity and transmitter release synchronism. The mechanisms determining limitations of the terminal length and the appearance of secondary terminal branches are discussed.Neirofiziologiya/Neurophysiology, Vol. 25, No. 3, pp. 170–175, May–June, 1993.  相似文献

Abstract A new conifer, Austrohamia acanthobractea, sp. nov., is described from the Jurassic Daohugou flora, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. The material consists of impressions represented by well‐preserved leafy twigs and branches as well as ovulate cones. Leafy shoots with at least two orders of branching; ultimate branchlets alternate or sub‐opposite with helically arranged leaves, decurrent at base with distal rounded tip; dorsiventrally flattened and univeined. Ovuliferous cones elliptical, less than 1 cm long, terminally borne on ultimate and penultimate branches, composed of helically arranged bracts with ovules disposed on their adaxial surfaces. The presence of similar, if not identical taxa, on both sides of the Pacific indicates the cosmopolitan distribution of primitive Cupressaceae between East Asia (Eurasia) and South America in the Pangaea.  相似文献

Influence of elevated CO2 and O3 on Betula pendula Roth crown structure   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Elevated CO(2) and ozone effects were studied singly and in combination on the crown structure of two Betula pendula clones. Measurements were made at the end of the second fumigation period in an open-top-chamber experiment with 9-year-old trees. Shoot ramification (number of long and short daughter shoots), shoot length, and number of metamers, leaves and buds were measured at four positions in every tree. As a result of increased temperature, trees in chambers had longer shoots and more frequent shoot ramification than control trees not enclosed in chambers. Ozone treatment decreased shoot ramification significantly. Additionally, ozone treatment resulted in an increased number of metamers in one clone. There was no statistically significant interaction between ozone effect and crown position; however, there was a slight tendency for the lower crown to be more affected by ozone. Elevated CO(2) caused a significant increase in the number of long-shoot metamers. Therefore, 2x ambient CO(2) concentration partly ameliorated the negative effect of ozone because the increased number of leaves per shoot counteracted the decreased branching. Although the main effects of elevated ozone and CO(2) were similar in the two clones, slight, statistically insignificant, differences appeared in their responses when interactions with crown position were considered.  相似文献

In trees, leaf life span is closely related to successional status. Although leaves are attached to shoots, shoot life span has been insufficiently studied in the context of ecological systems. Interspecific variation in shoot survivorship was investigated over 27 months in 15 temperate hardwood tree species. Relationships between shoot architecture and shoot survival were also investigated. Shoot life span was shortest in early successional species, and longest in late successional species, in each of the families Betulaceae and Fagaceae. In Salicaceae, all of which were early successional species, shoot life span was longer in mountainous than in riparian species. Early successional or riparian species distributed longer shoots densely, even in proximal positions on mother shoots, resulting in mutual shading and consequent early and massive shoot shedding. By contrast, late successional or mountainous species concentrated shoots in distal positions, allowing shoots to receive equally favorable light, resulting in a longer life span. These results reveal close relationships between shoot life span and environmental resource availability or successional status and suggest a causal relationship between shoot shedding and shoot architecture.  相似文献

Successful propagation of seedlings and mature trees of Sorbus domestica L. has been achieved by in vitro methods. Multiple shoot formation was obtained by placing shoot apices or nodal segments on a modified Schenck and Hildebrandt medium containing benzyladenine. Regenerated shoots were excised and induced to root on media with auxin. In the best treatments 75–85% of shoots from juvenile material rooted. Rooting capacity of shoots from mature explants was lower (30%) and was not improved by dipping the base of shoots in concentration solutions of indolebutyric or naphthaleneacetic acids. Plantlets were ultimately established in soil.Abbreviations BA benzyladenine - IAA indoleacetic acid - IBA indolebutyric acid - NAA naphthaleneacetic acid  相似文献

In vitro plantlet regeneration systems for the seed geranium (Pelargonium x hortorum Bailey) using cotyledon, hypocotyl and root explants were optimized by studying the influence of seedling age, growth regulators and excision orientation on organogenesis. Indole-3-acetic acid combined with zeatin yielded the highest rate of shoot production on cotyledon explants (0.2–2 shoots per explant). More shoots were produced on explants cut from the most basal region of cotyledons from 2 to 4-day-old seedlings than from older seedlings or more distal cut sites. Hypocotyl explants produced the highest number of shoots, up to 40 shoots per explant, on indole-3-acetic acid (2.8–5.6 mM) + zeatin (4.6 mM) or thidiazuron (4.5 mM). Maximum shoot formation (0.3–1.4 shoots per explant) on root explants occurred when they were cultured on medium containing zeatin. Regenerated shoots rooted best on a basal medium containing no growth regulators. There were substantial differences among cultivars in shoot formation from each of the explant systems.Abbreviations BA 6-benzylaminopurine - 2,4-d 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid - IAA indole-3-acetic acid - NAA naphthaleneacetic acid - TDZ thidiazuron  相似文献

Changes in the size and age structure of the canopy of the leguminous shrub Retama sphaerocarpa in semi-arid south-eastern Spain were investigated by monitoring growth and survivorship of cladodes (photosynthetic stems) on marked shoots over a period of 26 months. Three basic morphological types of cladodes – long shoots, short shoots, and secondary short shoots – were distinguished. The canopy of the shrubs contained three annual cohorts of cladodes in spring and summer. The number and size of shoots produced each year was highly variable and was apparently related to the amount of rainfall during the preceding cool season. The spring cohort of 1994 produced only 37% of cladodes compared with 1993. Two cohorts of shoots were actually initiated in spring and late summer of each year, but the second cohort produced only 2–12% of the number of cladodes compared with the spring cohort. The proportions of the different cohorts in the canopy changed rapidly from April to August, but only slowly during the remainder of the year when only two annual cohorts remained after extensive litterfall in late summer. This late summer litterfall caused a substantial reduction in green canopy area (40–50%) which was achieved mainly be shedding of one year old cladodes. The life expectancy of cladodes decreased with increasing order of their morphological type from 850 ± 25 days in long shoots to 563 ± 4 days and 546 ± 9 days in short shoots and second order short shoots, respectively.Flowering and fruiting took place from May to July, almost exclusively on one year old cladodes, and coincided with the maximum development of the canopy. Flowering intensity was high in 1994, when individual shoots supported a mean number of approximately 150 flowers. Shoots produced an average of 12.6 ± 0.6 and 5.3 ± 1.0 fruits per shoot in 1993 and 1994, respectively. Most of the annual fruit crop (80–90%) was shed during litterfall in late summer. A proportion of 10–20% was retained in the canopy for up to 12 months, however, with some fruits persisting for more than 22 months.  相似文献

Summary Shoot systems developed over 3 successive years were investigated on 55 understorey Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr. trees. Paired comparisons of preformed-leaf content of terminal buds and numbers of leaves produced on new shoots showed that neoformed leaves were produced in large numbers. Parent-shoot character was not useful in predicting numbers of preformed leaves, was better related to total leaves produced, but left the majority of the variation unexplained. This reflected the capacity of any terminal bud to produce a shoot with more or less neoformation, depending on conditions for growth. All shoots over 6 cm long produced sylleptic shoots that bore from two to many leaves and were arranged in a mesitonic pattern along the parent. Some of the longer sylleptic shoots produced lateral buds or second-order sylleptic shoots. Monopodial second-year extensions of sylleptic-shoot axes followed an acrotonic pattern, as did proleptic shoots from the few lateral buds borne on the parent shoots. Such lateral buds were more frequent on shorter parent shoots: they typically occurred near the proximal and distal ends. Duration of shoot extension was positively correlated with shoot length: terminal buds became evident as shoot extension neared cessation.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between variation in age and shoot characteristics of the host plant Salix exigua Nuttall (coyote or sandbar willow) and the attack and survival of Euura sp. (an unnamed leaf-midrib galling sawfly). Variation in shoot characteristics resulted from reduced growth as willow ramets aged. Mean shoot length per ramet and mean longest leaf length per shoot decreased by 95% and 50% respectively between 1- and 9-year-old willow ramets. All measured shoot characteristics-shoot length, longest leaf length, number of leaves per shoot, and mean internode length-were significantly negatively correlated with ramet age (r 2 ranged from –0.23 to –0.41). Correlations between shoot characteristics were highly positive, indicating that plants also grew in a strongly integrated fashion (r 2 ranged from 0.54 to 0.85). Four hypotheses were examined to explain sawfly attack patterns. The host-plant hypothesis was supported in explaining enhanced larval sawfly survival through reduced plant resistance. As willow ramets aged, the probability of Euura sp. attack decreased over 10-fold, from 0.315 on 1-year-old ramets to 0.024 on 2- to 9-year-old ramets. As shoot length increased, the probability of sawfly attack increased over 100-fold, from 0.007 on shoots <100 mm, to 0.800 on shoots in the 1001–1100 mm shoot length class. These attack patterns occurred even though 1-year-old ramets and shoots >500 mm each represented less than 2% of the total shoots available for oviposition. Host plant induced mortality of the egg/early instar stage decreased by 50% on longer leaves and was the most important factor determining survival differences between vigorous and non-vigorous hosts. Sawfly attack was not determined by the resource distribution hypothesis. Although shoots <200 mm contained 82% of the total leaves available, they contained only 43% of the galls initiated. The attack pattern also was not explained by the gall volume hypothesis. Although gall volume increased on longer shoots, there was no significant variation in mid or late instar mortality over shoot length, as would be expected if food resources within smaller galls were limited. The natural enemy attack hypothesis could not explain the pattern of oviposition since predation was greater on longer shoots and leaves. In addition, larval survival was related to oviposition behavior. Due to a 69% reduction in late instar death and an 83% reduction in parasitism, survival of progeny in galls initiated close to the petiole base was 2.8 times greater than in galls initiated near the leaf tip. A 75% reduction in gall volume over this range of gall positions may account for the observed increases in late instar mortality and parasitism.  相似文献
