Nosema herpobdellae was recorded in populations of the leech Erpobdella octoculata from lakes in northwest England and North Wales and is redescribed using light and transmission electron microscopy. It differes from N. glossiphoniae in the nature of the infection and tissues parasitized and from N. tractabile in its larger spore size, longer polar filament, in the angle of the anterior coils of the polar filament to the spore long axis, and apparently in its developmental cycle. The infection was found in a massive xenoma, in the connective tissue surrounding the gut, which was presumed to be formed from a single hypertrophied cell. Its developmental cycle included merogony and sporogony. 相似文献

The blastozoan echinoderm genus Gogia is reported for the first time in the Early and the Middle Cambrian of Mexico. Reports in different members of the section of San José de Gracia (Sonora State, northwestern Mexico) extend the palaeogeographical range of the genus to the South Laurentia, and the stratigraphic range of Gogia granulosa to the whole first half of middle Middle Cambrian. Isolated plates occur in rocks deposited in detrital inner platform and complete specimens, in carbonate outer platform, confirming their ability to live in diverse environments. Their presence in these different environments through the Early-Middle Cambrian on Laurentia agrees with the onshore-offshore expansion of echinoderms during Cambrian. 相似文献

The Early Cambrian helcionelloid mollusc Anabarella australis is described from North-East Greenland, representing the second occurrence of the species outside of Australia. Other Australian molluscs of this age are known from many localities including North China, Siberia, Altai, Transbaikalia, southern Kazakhstan, Mongolia, eastern Germany and Spain. These records, supported now by A. australis, demonstrate the close proximity of continents in the Early Cambrian. 相似文献

Morphometric studies are a fundamental tool in paleontology to answer taxonomic, functional and evolutionary questions. In particular, appropriate functional interpretation often requires consideration of ontogenetic changes in the structures studied. The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is one of the most representative large mammal species of the Eurasian Pleistocene. Available ontogenetic studies on woolly mammoth mandible have focused on the first ontogenetic stages of the mandible development up to 4-5 years and have suggested that the symphysial process is sexually dimorphic. In the present work, we studied ontogenetic changes and sexual dimorphism in 45 mandibles from subadult and adult stages (8-56 African Elephant Years). Our results show positive correlations among almost all the morphometric variables measured, as well as an increase of mandible size with age. This increase does not differ among the variables examined, although the highest values are related with the symphysis height and the opening of the horizontal branches, and the lower ones with the greatest length (dimension), which implies the increase in the relative mandible width and height throughout the individual life. Sexual dimorphism in the mandible is at best slight, and the symphysial process is not diagnostic for sexing purposes. In addition, differences in age were an important confounding factor to assess sexual dimorphism and should be considered in future uses of sexual dimorphism assessment techniques. 相似文献

In extreme cases leaves in male plants of the dioecious genus Leucadendron (Proteaceae) are up to an order of magnitude smaller than female leaves. This secondary sexual dimorphism (SSD) in leaf size has previously been suggested to be due to intra-male sexual selection, leading to an increase in male allocation to reproduction in dimorphic species. After critically evaluating previous data provided to support this hypothesis, I suggest on both theoretical grounds and on re-analysis that this argument is unlikely and unsupported. Leaf size dimorphism could theoretically evolve directly due to disruptive ecological selection between genders, leading to niche dimorphism either within or between habitats. I test this ecological causation hypothesis by providing data on specific leaf area (sla) and water use efficiency (δ 13C) of leaves from males and females of several Leucadendron species. Results confirm the expectation of minimal gender differences. I argue that leaf dimorphism is a consequence of selection on flower size and architecture. 相似文献

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that causes progressive muscular weakness. Fused in Sarcoma (FUS) that has been identified in familial ALS is an RNA binding protein that is normally localized in the nucleus. However, its function in vivo is not fully understood. Drosophila has Cabeza (Caz) as a FUS homologue and specific knockdown of Caz in the eye imaginal disc and pupal retina using a GMR-GAL4 driver was here found to induce an abnormal morphology of the adult compound eyes, a rough eye phenotype. This was partially suppressed by expression of the apoptosis inhibitor P35. Knockdown of Caz exerted no apparent effect on differentiation of photoreceptor cells. However, immunostaining with an antibody to Cut that marks cone cells revealed fusion of these and ommatidia of pupal retinae. These results indicate that Caz knockdown induces apoptosis and also inhibits differentiation of cone cells, resulting in abnormal eye morphology in adults. Mutation in EGFR pathway-related genes, such as rhomboid-1, rhomboid-3 and mirror suppressed the rough eye phenotype induced by Caz knockdown. Moreover, the rhomboid-1 mutation rescued the fusion of cone cells and ommatidia observed in Caz knockdown flies. The results suggest that Caz negatively regulates the EGFR signaling pathway required for determination of cone cell fate in Drosophila. 相似文献

Michelia coriacea (Magnoliacae) is a critically endangered tree, endemic to Southeast Yunnan province, China. Most of the individuals in the extant populations normally bear flowers, but fruit set and fertile seed production rates were only 6.7% and 0.2%, respectively. To identify possible causes of reproductive barriers, the following studies were carried out: examination of stamen and pistil development; experiments using controlled pollination; observations of behavior and frequency of floral visitors in both cultivated and natural populations. The results revealed that about 60% of pollen was abnormal and approx. 70% of ovules had delayed development. Hand pollination could effectively enhance the fruit set (F4,25=35.139, P<0.0001) and seed set per fruit (F4,25=85.022, P<0.0001). Both cultivated and wild M. coriacea had an extremely low frequency of floral visitors. Some beetles, a few species of Andrenidae and some Bombus sp. are likely to be the effective pollinators. The fruit set and seed set per fruit from controlled self-pollination and cross-pollination were significantly different (P<0.05), and thus it is inferred, that inbreeding depression may be a contributing factor in the very low seed production. It appears that low seed set in M. coriacea is due to a combination of factors: abnormalities in pollen and ovules, low number of effective pollinators, and inbreeding depression. 相似文献

Heterocotyle pastinacae Scott, 1904 is redescribed and a neotype is designated. H. pastinacae is most easily distinguished from other members of the genus by the elaborate arrangement of sclerotised spines in the vagina.
The male copulatory organ also serves to differentiate it from other species in the genus. A possible function for the vaginal
spines and unique form of the male copulatory organ is discussed. The use of head organ number as a generic character is considered

Two new species of fossil snipe flies (Rhagionidae) from the Daohugou Formation of Chifeng City in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (northeastern China) are described as Palaeoarthroteles jurassicus nov. sp. and P. pallidius nov. sp. The detailed structure of the lophophore is a key diagnostic character in the definition of higher brachiopod taxa. The problematic Heliomedusa orienta Sun and Hou, from the Lower Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte of Yunnan, southwestern China, has a well-preserved lophophore, which is unlike that of any known extant or extinct brachiopods. Based on a comparative study of lophophore disposition in H. orienta and the extant discinid Pelagodiscus atlanticus, the in- and excurrent pattern and shell orientation of H. orienta are described and discussed. Reconstructions of lophophore shape and function are based on numerous specimens and comparison with P. atlanticus. The lophophore is composed of a pair of lophophoral arms that freely arch posteriorly rather than coiling anteriorly as commonly seen in fossil and recent lingulids. The lophophore is attached to the dorsal lobe of the mantle; it has neither calcareous nor chitinous supporting structures, and is disposed symmetrically on either side of the valve midline. The mouth can be inferred to be located at the base of the two brachial tubes, slightly posterior to the anterodorsal projection of the body wall. The lophophoral arms bear laterofrontal tentacles with a double row of cilia along their lateral edge, as in extant lingulid brachiopods. The main brachial axes are also ciliated, which presumably facilitated transport of mucous-bound nutrient particles to the mouth. The unique organization of the lophophore in Heliomedusa is not like any known fossil and living brachiopods. This clearly demonstrates that H. orienta is not a member of any crown group. It is here considered as a member of the brachiopod stem group, which challenges recent interpretations of a close discinid affinity. 相似文献

The Chungan ground lizard, Takydromus sylvaticus, long known only from five females collected in Fujian Province of China, was recently found in Anhui Province of the country. The newly collected specimens included the first male specimens (n=7), in which the tail bases were stouter than in conspecific females. Ventral scales in these males were invariably keeled, whereas in females those forming the four median rows were smooth. Females had more dorsal scales (47-48) than males (42-43) in the median longitudinal row between axilla and groin. Takydromus sylvaticus differed from the closely related T. dorsalis in having more dorsal scales in the median longitudinal row between axilla and groin (42-48 versus 32-40, respectively), more rows of large dorsal scales between the hind legs (10 versus 7-8, respectively), shorter hind legs, two distinct white longitudinal stripes on each side of the body, and no black stripe in the preocular and postocular regions. The number of transverse rows of ventral scales between collar and femoral pores in T. sylvaticus (26-28) was larger, but with a slight overlap, than that in T. dorsalis (22-26). Ecological observations on T. sylvaticus were also documented. 相似文献

Three-dimensionally preserved specimens of an indeterminate species of Sphenothallus Hall occur in limestones in the uppermost Guojiaba and lower Xiannudong formations (Qiongzhusian and early Canglangpuan stages, Lower Cambrian) in southern Shaanxi Province, China. The specimens consist of a small (up to 3 mm long), gradually tapered, subcircular to elliptic (transversely) tube that is broken at both ends, commonly with the fracture edge at the wide (apertural) end of each face forming a V- or U-shaped notch. Some specimens preserve the subconical upper (proximal) part of the holdfast, and all specimens are black. Combined scanning and transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive elemental analyses show that the tube wall is finely laminated, with individual laminae measuring about 1 μm thick, and consists mainly of calcium phosphate but also contains organic material. Sphenothallus specimens from the Lower Cambrian Guojiaba and Xiannudong formations represent the earliest known record of this genus, and indicate that the origin of this taxon is coeval with and possibly related to the Early Cambrian bioradiation event. 相似文献

Validity of the species Liparis schantarensis (Lindberg and Dulkeit, 1929) (Scorpaeniformes: Liparidae) is confirmed and redescribed based on six new specimens collected
in Avacha Bay on the southeastern Kamchatka Peninsula. These specimens are the first records of this species reported in more
than 70 years and the first outside the Sea of Okhotsk. Distinguished from almost all other members of the genus Liparis by a comblike anteriormost part of the dorsal fin, both males and females have 5–7 elongated anterior dorsal fin rays, with
