The morphology of the male reproductive system as well as sperm transfer in Branchiura has been described for Dolops ranarum and Argulus japonicus. In this study, the reproductive system and accessory structures are described for male Chonopeltis australis using histology, light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. For the first time, we describe sperm transfer by means of a spermatophore in this genus. The internal and external morphology and mechanism of sperm transfer is compared with other Branchiura, where it has been described. The morphology of the reproductive system of C. australis is similar to that of D. ranarum while the accessory structures and the spermatophore produced are similar to that of A. japonicus. The small cyclopoid copepod Oithona is widely occurring in polar areas; however, knowledge of its biology and ecology is very limited. Here, we investigate the population dynamics, vertical distribution, and reproductive characteristics of Oithona spp. from late winter to summer, in a subarctic fjord of West Greenland. During winter–early spring, the abundance of Oithona spp. was low (1.8 × 103 ind. m?2) and the population was mainly composed of late copepodites and adults, whereas in summer, abundance peaked and younger stages dominated (1.1 × 106 ind. m?2). In general, all stages of Oithona spp. remained in the upper 100 m, with nauplii exhibiting a shallower distribution. Although no general seasonal migration was found, a deeper distribution of the adult females in winter was observed. The mean clutch size of Oithona spp. varied from 16 to 30 eggs per female, peaking in summer. Egg production rates (EPR) were low in winter–early spring (0.13 ± 0.03 eggs female?1 day?1) and reached maximum values in summer (1.6 ± 0.45 eggs female?1 day?1). EPR of Oithona spp. showed a significantly positive relationship with both temperature and protozooplankton biomass, and the development of the population seemed to be appreciably affected by temperature. Oithona spp. remained active throughout the study, stressing the key importance of these small copepods in high-latitude ecosystems, especially in periods when larger copepods are not present in the surface layer.  相似文献

The Branchiura are fish ectoparasites which include the well-known and very commonly found genus Argulus. But the Branchiura also contains the monotypic genus Dipteropeltis, about which only very little is known. In this investigation of two female paratype specimens we describe for the first time the external morphology of Dipteropeltis based on Scanning Electron Microscopy. We show that Dipteropeltis has a pre-oral spine, unique suction disc support structures, an Argulus-like mouth cone and second maxillae with a combination of features seen in both Argulus and Chonopeltis. These data are compared with data from the three remaining branchiuran genera Dolops, Chonopeltis and Argulus and discussed in a phylogenetic context based on a recently proposed phylogeny of the group.  相似文献

Understanding how spatial ecology varies between life stages, and whether there is an overlap of critical areas (e.g., nursery areas, breeding sites), may provide significant benefits to conservation planning. The present work examined the space use and residency of shark-like batoids (families Rhynchobatidae and Rhinobatidae) in a nearshore system. An array of 63 acoustic receivers deployed in Cleveland Bay, north Queensland, Australia, passively tracked 15 G. typus and 20 Rhynchobatus spp. between 2009 and 2011. Glaucostegus typus were monitored between 1 and 766 days (mean?=?333?±?69 days) and were present in the site from 1 to 198 days (mean 73?±?25 days). Both adult male and female G. typus exhibited philopatric behaviour patterns, leaving the bay and returning after periods of about 9–12 months to use the same areas where they were detected in previous years. Individuals with lower residency had larger activity spaces. Rhynchobatus spp. were monitored for 1 to 707 days (mean?=?231?±?50 days) and were present in the site from 1 to 350 days (mean 82?±?24 days). Rhynchobatus spp. exhibited no synchronicity in use of the bay. Both G. typus male and female residency changed with size of individuals, in comparison size had no effect on the residency of Rhynchobatus spp. The present study improves our understanding of shark-like batoid spatial ecology in nearshore waters and may provide useful information for the management of these populations.  相似文献

Little is known about the biology and life cycle of the Australian stingless bee, Austroplebeia australis (Friese). The ontogenic times for developing offspring, as well as the longevity of adults, drive the overall life cycle of a social colony. The developmental times for brood within stingless bee species which build cluster-type nests, such as A. australis, are as yet unreported. A technique was developed whereby ‘donor’ brood cells were separated from the main brood cluster and ‘grafted’ into hive annexes, allowing workers from within the colony to access the brood ‘grafts’ for hygiene and maintenance activities, whilst enabling observation of developing brood. The mean ontogenic time for A. australis workers, maintained at ~27 °C, was 55 days, which is similar to that reported for other stingless bees. The maximum longevity of A. australis was determined by marking cohorts of worker bees within five colonies. Workers within all colonies demonstrated extended longevity, with an overall maximum longevity of 161 days, with the oldest bee living for 240 days. Extended longevity may result from evolutionary adaptations to the floral resource scarcity, which is regularly experienced in semi-arid, inland Australia, the natural habitat of A. australis.  相似文献

The greatest diversity of stingless bee species is found in warm tropical regions, where brood thermoregulation is unnecessary for survival. Although Austroplebeia australis (Friese) naturally occurs in northern regions of Australia, some populations experience extreme temperature ranges, including sub-zero temperatures. In this study, the temperature was monitored in A. australis colonies’ brood chamber (n = 6) and the hive cavity (n = 3), over a 12-month period. The A. australis colonies demonstrated some degree of thermoconformity, i.e. brood temperature although higher correlated with cavity temperature, and were able to warm the brood chamber throughout the year. Brood production continued throughout the cold season and developing offspring survived and emerged, even after exposure to very low (?0.4 °C) and high (37.6 °C) temperatures. Austroplebeia australis, thus, demonstrated a remarkable ability to survive temperature extremes, which has not been seen in other stingless bee species.  相似文献

Oomyzus sokolowskii Kurdjumov is a larval endoparasitoid of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L., which is one of the most destructive pests of cruciferous vegetables worldwide. The performance of O. sokolowskii parasitizing P. xylostella on cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis), Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis), pakchoi (Brassica chinensis), cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata), and broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) was determined under laboratory conditions. Our results showed that O. sokolowskii performed best on cauliflower compared with the others, with the greatest net reproductive rate (R o = 34.99), intrinsic rate of increase (r m = 0.196), offspring emerged/host larva (9.0), percentage of parasitized host larvae with adults emerged (67.6 %), adults produced (43.6/female), and the shortest developmental time from egg to adult (15.8 days). Chinese cabbage-, pakchoi-, cabbage-, and cauliflower-adapted O. sokolowskii performed the best in percentage of parasitized host larvae with adults emerged, offspring adults produced per female, and offspring produced per host larva when parasitizing fourth instar P. xylostella larvae on cauliflower. The percentage of host-adapted female O. sokolowskii parasitizing different host-adapted fourth instar P. xylostella larvae was similar. Based on our results, we suggest that O. sokolowskii had performed best on cauliflower, which might be the best host plant to rear O. sokolowskii.  相似文献

‘Gynodioecy–dioecy’ is one of the pathways by which dioecy can arise from hermaphroditism. Studies on sex determination and development of gynodioecious systems have focused on temperate and/or annual species. Little is known about the evolutionary dynamics of gynodioecy and dioecy in perennial tropical species, where these systems have more frequently evolved. Maytenus obtusifolia is an abundant species in restingas in southeastern Brazil. The sexual system of M. obtusifolia was investigated by studying the floral structure and reproductive biology. We considered the sexual system as an intermediate step in the pathway gynodioecy-dioecy. The characterization of the hermaphrodite morph was complex, because of a gradient of variation in floral morphology and reproductive characteristics (sizes of the style and stigmatic surface, pollen viability, embryo sacs containing hypertrophied synergids, and fruit set). This variation leads to different proportions of functional male and female flowers among hermaphrodite plants and is responsible for the different levels of reproductive success. Female reproductive success and pollen viability were negatively correlated with the hermaphrodite morph (r = ?0.67). The higher fruiting intensity and fruit/flower ratio of females (41 %) compared to hermaphrodites (2 %) and the fact that female plants produce more and better-quality seeds support the female compensation. We suggest that female sterility may be linked to the set of changes in the carpels. The differences in the quality and quantity of pollen grains of hermaphrodite plants, and the similar individual rates of pollen viability observed for three consecutive flowering events, may indicate a relationship with nuclear cytoplasmic sex determination.  相似文献

Hemiptarsenus varicornis (Girault), a destructive host-feeding wasp, is an important biocontrol agent/larval ectoparasitoid of agromyzid leafminers worldwide. In the present study, the life history and life table of H. varicornis reared with Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) were studied at a constant 27 °C. The developmental durations of female and male eggs, larvae, prepupae, pupae and total immature wasps were 1.00 and 1.00, 2.57 and 2.62, 0.45 and 0.37, 3.88 and 3.52, and 7.90 and 7.52 days, respectively. This wasp showed three types of host-killing behavior: reproductive parasitization (parasitism), non-reproductive host feeding (host feeding), and host stinging without oviposition or feeding (host stinging), resulting in 133.9, 303.8, and 84.2, respectively, killed host larvae. We confirm that H. varicornis is a strong synovigenic parasitoid, with an ovigeny index of 0.003. The number of host-feeding events was strongly correlated with parasitism, host-stinging events, longevity and total host mortality. The intrinsic rate of increase, the finite rate of increase, the net reproductive rate, the gross reproduction rate, and the mean length of a generation of H. varicornis were 0.3011/day, 1.3624/day, 66.22 offspring/individual, 168.33 offspring/individual, and 13.56 days, respectively. These results could contribute to a better understanding of the biocontrol efficiency of this destructive host feeder.  相似文献

Two new species of bothriocephalidean tapeworms, Bothriocephalus australis n. sp. from the flatheads Platycephalus bassensis Cuvier (type host) and P. aurimaculatus Knapp off southern Australia and B. celineae n. sp. from a hybrid serranid Cephalopholis aurantia (Val.) × C. spiloparaea (Val.) from off New Caledonia, are described. B. australis is unique in the possession of the combination of the three characters: an elongate, obliquely situated cirrus-sac; a wide genital atrium surrounded by chromophilic cells; and a well-developed apical disc. Bcelineae is typified by the presence of a low number of testes per segment (14–26), forming one or two incomplete longitudinal bands on each side of segment, and the small size of the strobila (total length 24 mm) which consists of less than 100 segments.  相似文献

群落中各营养级的相互作用在群落结构形成中起了重要作用.以南方菟丝子(Cuscuta australis R.Br.)和三叶鬼针草(Biden pilosa L.)为研究对象,采用完全随机区组实验设计方法,测定并分析基质养分(不施肥与施肥)对寄生植物生长的影响,探讨寄生植物生物量与寄主生长特性、生物量和光源捕获能力的相关性.结果表明,施肥显著增加寄生植物南方菟丝子的吸器数量、缠绕圈数、相对盖度、营养器官生物量、生殖器官生物量和总生物量,但对生殖器官的生物量比无显著影响.施肥显著增加寄主植物的根、茎、叶生物量和总生物量、叶生物量比、比叶面积和叶绿素含量,但显著降低根冠比与根生物量比.南方菟丝子生物量与三叶鬼针草生物量、叶生物量比、比叶面积以及相对叶绿素含量之间均存在显著正相关,与根生物量比和根冠比存在显著负相关.研究结果表明施肥可以提高寄主植物的光资源捕获能力,将更多地生物量分配至叶等光合机构上,从而促进寄主植物(生产者)的生长,并间接促进寄生植物(初级消费者)的生长.  相似文献

Fish lice (Argulus spp; family Argulidae) are branchiuran crustaceans that parasitize both marine and freshwater fishes. Argulus spp can be a major threat to fish health, because heavy infestations can cause significant morbidity and mortality. In addition, fish lice are known to be the vehicle for other fish diseases. During rounds at our facility, Argulus japonicus was collected from the caudal and anal fins of 3 goldfish (Carassius auratus).These goldfish were asymptomatic, and no additional cases were noted after manual removal of the lice. As soon as any Argulus organisms are identified, management and treatment are recommended because infections can escalate rapidly. Currently, there are no FDA-approved drugs for the control and treatment of this parasite, but several chemicals including organophosphates and diflubenzuron have been used with success. The screening and quarantine of incoming fish is the best way to avoid a facility-wide Argulus infestation.Fish lice (Argulus spp) are members of a large group of branchiuran crustaceans that infest and cause disease in fish. More than 100 different species of Argulus are distributed worldwide.12 The 3 most studied species—Argulus foliaceus, A. japonicus, and A. coregoni—are found in freshwater systems.12 Argulus lice have compound eyes, a suctorial proboscis, 2 anteroventral prominent sucking discs that serve as attachment organs, 4 pairs of thoracic swimming legs, and a laterally expanded carapace that forms respiratory alae.2Argulus japonicus is native to Asia, where its typical hosts, goldfish (Carassius auratus) and common koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) are also located.6 In the United States, A. japonicus is present in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Washington, and Wisconsin.6 It is suspected that A. japonicus has been transported around the world unintentionally, with stocks of ornamental fish, particularly koi carp.6 During rounds at our facility, the branchiuran parasite A. japonicus was collected from the caudal and anal fins of 3 goldfish (Carassius auratus).Argulus spp can be a major threat to fish health. Heavy infestations of this parasite can cause significant morbidity and mortality.3,6 In addition, Argulus lice have been known to be the vehicle for other fish pathogens, including Rhabdovirus carpio, larval nematodes, and the fungus Saprolegnia.1,4 Fish without visible lice may show nonspecific signs of infestation, including spot or pinpoint hemorrhages, anemia, fin and scale loss, increased mucus production, lethargy, erratic swimming, and poor body condition.12 Fish may rub against surfaces in an attempt to relieve irritation or to remove the parasites.12 In some cases, there may be no obvious signs of disease other than presence of the parasite.12  相似文献

The behavior of polar deep-sea nekton is very poorly known. To obtain insight into mating behavior of the abundant and ecologically important sub-Antarctic deep-sea squid Onykia ingens, our goals were to (1) quantify spermatophore production; (2) determine the preferred location for spermatangia deposition; (3) investigate whether male and female O. ingens mate with multiple mates; and (4) discuss the location of implanted spermatangia in light of mating behavior and egg fertilization. Toward this end, we examined male and female O. ingens specimens from Falkland Island and New Zealand waters. Male O. ingens store up to 198 spermatophores (mean 103 ± 61; n = 12) in their reproductive system, which are produced over a period of considerable somatic growth (200–400 mm ML), and which may have a considerable size range. Males insert their long extendible terminal organ in the mantle cavity of the female, potentially through the funnel, to deposit spermatophores in one or more of four regions on the female’s body. Most implanted spermatangia (52.5 %) were found in the funnel region, but many were also found inside the mantle cavity closer to the oviducts. Males with longer terminal organs therefore may be able to position closer to the oviducts where fertilization chances are higher than for spermatangia located in the funnel region. The number of implanted spermatangia per individual female (4–60, mean 29 ± 20; n = 24), the multiregional spermatangia deposition, and the different outer appearance of spermatangia, suggested that females have multiple mating events. Since males produce more spermatophores (up to 200) than the number of spermatangia in one region (<60), it is likely that males too mate with more than one female. We show how quantitative assessment of reproductive characteristics can provide insight into the reproductive behavior of deep-sea species for which in situ observations are currently lacking.  相似文献

The invasion of wetlands by Phragmites australis is a conservation concern across North America. We used the invasion of Chesapeake Bay wetlands by P. australis as a model system to examine the effects of regional and local stressors on plant invasions. We summarized digital maps of the distributions of P. australis and of potential stressors (especially human land use and shoreline armoring) at two spatial scales: for 72 subestuaries of the bay and their local watersheds and for thousands of 500 m shoreline segments. We developed statistical models that use the stressor variables to predict P. australis prevalence (% of shoreline occupied) in subestuaries and its presence or absence in 500 m segments of shoreline. The prevalence of agriculture was the strongest and most consistent predictor of P. australis presence and abundance in Chesapeake Bay, because P. australis can exploit the resulting elevated nutrient levels to enhance its establishment, growth, and seed production. Phragmites australis was also positively associated with riprapped shoreline, probably because it creates disturbances that provide colonization opportunities. The P. australis invasion was less severe in areas with greater forested land cover and natural shorelines. Surprisingly, invasion was low in highly developed watersheds and highest along shorelines with intermediate levels of residential land use, possibly indicating that highly disturbed systems are uninhabitable even to invasive species. Management strategies that reduce nutrient pollution, preserve natural shorelines, and limit nearshore disturbance of soils and vegetation may enhance the resilience of shorelines to invasion.  相似文献

Pseudoviviparous species are considered to rely almost entirely on vegetative propagation, because flowers are replaced by sprouts, and seedling recruitment is rare. We compared reproductive allocation (inflorescence and seed production) in three propagation modes presented by sympatric species of Leiothrix (Eriocaulaceae): rhizomatous and seminiferous (RS—L. crassifolia); rhizomatous, seminiferous, and pseudoviviparous (RSP—L. spiralis); and seminiferous and pseudoviviparous, in which seed production is considered rare due to reduced inflorescence size and small number of pistillate flowers (SP—L. arrecta and L. propinqua). We hypothesize that such propagation modes constitute a continuum of reproductive investment, that is: RS > RSP > SP. We harvested 154 Leiothrix spp. individuals at the Serra do Cipó, SE Brazil, from which we recorded the number of capitula and seeds, mean seed weight, and dry biomass allocated to plant structures. We then compared distinct propagation modes in relation to reproductive allocation, inflorescence-based and seed-based reproductive effort, and biomass partitioning. Contrary to expectations, the reproductive investment hierarchy found was SP ≥ RS > RSP. Our results do not fully concur with the current view that pseudoviviparous plants allocate few resources to reproduction. We suggest that the larger reproductive investment observed in SP helps to wait for better recruitment conditions in crowded and highly competitive mature populations (temporal escape), and to cope with destructive disturbances such as fire, since SP species lacks rhizomes.  相似文献

Periclimenes paivai is notable for its symbiotic lifestyle with jellyfish. The objective of this study was to investigate the fecundity and reproductive output of females, and specifically to determine whether females protected in their host have a greater reproductive success than other shrimp species. All anatomical parts of the medusae were analyzed and the P. paivai individuals were separated. Among 83 females analyzed, 65 presented embryos in the first developmental stage, and 18 were in the final stage of development. The mean fecundity was 229.08 ± 120.04 in initial-stage embryos and 191 ± 114.76 in final-stage embryos. We observed a positive relationship between the embryo number and the female size; however, the embryo number was not related to the embryonic stage, which indicates that females did not lose their embryos during the incubation period. The weight of brood mass during production is closely related to the female weight according to the results of linear regression, as fecundity increased with female size. In its symbiosis, P. paivai can increase the amount of energy used to produce embryos (mean reproductive output = 10.38%) and can elevate the reproductive success.  相似文献

Gravel-sand river terraces were nearly eliminated from central European landscape by river channelization. Monotypic stands of common reed (Phragmites australis) growing on such terraces are often stressed by drought, which makes them vulnerable to Lipara spp. (Diptera: Chloropidae) gallmakers. Although Lipara are considered ecosystem engineers, only fragmentary information is available on the biology of their parasitoids and inquilines. We analyzed the assemblages of arthropods (Arachnida, Collembola, Dermaptera, Psocoptera, Thysanoptera, Hemiptera, Raphidioptera, Neuroptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera) that emerged from 17,791 Lipara-induced galls collected in winter from 30 reed beds in the Czech Republic, 15 of which were situated at (post)industrial sites (gravel-sandpits, tailing ponds, limestone quarries, colliery dumps, and reclaimed lignite open-cast mines) and 15 were in near-natural habitats (medieval fishponds, and river and stream floodplains). The Chao-1 estimator indicated 229.3 ± 18.1 species in reed galls at (post)industrial and 218.1 ± 23.6 species at near-natural sites, with the Sørensen index reaching only 0.58. We identified 18 red-listed species and four new species for the Czech Republic (Gasteruption phragmiticola, Echthrodelphax fairchildii, Haplogonatopus oratorius and Enclisis sp.), representing mostly obligate (64 %) or facultative (9 %) reed specialists. We propose that Lipara gall-associated assemblages undergo a long-term cyclic ecological succession. During first 10 years after reed bed formation, only Lipara spp. and several other species occur. During next decades, the reed beds host species-rich assemblages with numerous pioneer species (Singa nitidula, Polemochartus melas) that critically depend on presence of prior disturbances. Middle-aged reed beds (near medieval fishponds) are prevalently enriched in common species only (Oulema duftschmidi, Dimorphopterus spinolae). Habitats with the longest historical continuity (river floodplains) host again species-rich assemblages with several rare species that probably require long-term habitat continuity (Homalura tarsata, Hylaeus moricei). Landscape dynamics is thus critical for the persistence of a full spectrum of reed gall inquilines, with (post)industrials serving as the only refugia for pioneer species ousted from their key nesting habitats at once cyclically disturbed gravel-sand river terraces.  相似文献

Mesophotic coral ecosystems (below 30–40 m depth) host a large diversity of zooxanthellate coral communities and may play an important role in the ecology and conservation of coral reefs. Investigating the reproductive biology of mesophotic corals is important to understand their life history traits. Despite an increase in research on mesophotic corals in the last decade, their reproductive biology is still poorly understood. Here, gametogenesis and fecundity of the Indo-Pacific mesophotic coral, Acropora tenella, were examined in an upper mesophotic reef (40 m depth) in Okinawa, Japan for the first time. Acropora tenella is a hermaphrodite with a single annual gametogenic cycle, and both oogenesis and spermatogenesis occurring for 11–12 and 5–6 months, respectively. Timing of spawning of this species was similar to other shallow Acropora spp. in the region. However, colonies had longer gametogenic cycles and less synchronous gamete maturation compared to shallow acroporids with spawning extended over consecutive months. Both the polyp fecundity (number of eggs per polyp) and gonad index (defined as the number of eggs per square centimeter) of A. tenella were lower than most acroporids. Our findings contribute to understanding of the life history of corals on mesophotic reefs and suggest that the reproductive biology of upper mesophotic corals is similar to that of shallow-water corals.  相似文献

Closely related species in nature often show similarities in suites of direct and indirect traits that reveal aspects of their phylogenetic history. Here we tested how common descent affects trait evolution in several closely related parasitoid species in the genera Cotesia and Microplitis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Microgastrinae) by comparing development, resource use and allocation into reproduction and maintenance. Parasitoids in these genera exhibit traits, like haemolymph feeding as larvae and external pupation that are rare in most parasitoid lineages. The growth of parasitized hosts was reduced by 90 % compared with healthy hosts, and maximum host size depended to a large extent on adult parasitoid size. Development time was longer in the more generalist parasitoids than in the specialists. Adult body mass was sexually dimorphic in all Cotesia species, with females being larger, but not in Microplitis spp. In contrast, in one of the Microplitis species males were found to be the larger sex. Egg load dynamics during the first 6 days after emergence were highly variable but egg number was typically higher in Cotesia spp. compared to Microplitis spp. Longevity in the various species was only greater in female than in male wasps in two Microplitis sp. There was a clear inverse relationship between resource use and allocation, e.g. maximum egg load and longevity, in these parasitoids. Our results reveal that adaptation to constraints imposed by host quality and availability has resulted in trait convergence and divergence at the species, genus and subfamily level.  相似文献
