We used an extensive network of more than 170 radio receiving stations to document fine-scale passage efficiency of adult anadromous Pacific lamprey at Bonneville and The Dalles Dams in the lower Columbia River in the northwestern U.S.A. Each spring from 1997 to 2000, we released 197–299 lamprey with surgically implanted radio transmitters. Unique transmitter codes and the date and time of reception at each antenna site were downloaded electronically, and initial processing was conducted to eliminate false positive signals. The resulting large Oracle database was analyzed using an ArcView-based coding protocol. Underwater antennas positioned outside the fishway entrances detected lamprey approaches, and antennas positioned immediately inside the entrances indicated successful entries. Entrance efficiency (the number of lamprey that successfully entered a fishway divided by the number that approached that fishway) was compared for different types of entrances (main entrances versus orifice entrances) and entrance locations (powerhouse versus spillway). Lamprey used orifice-type entrances less frequently than main entrances, and passage success was generally low (< 50%) at all entrances to fishways at Bonneville Dam (the lowest dam in the system). Lamprey activity at the entrances was highest at night, and entrance success was significantly higher at The Dalles Dam (the next dam upstream from Bonneville Dam) than at Bonneville Dam. In 1999 and 2000, construction modifications were made to Bonneville Dam spillway entrances, and water velocity at these entrances was reduced at night. Modifications to increase lamprey attachment at the entrances improved lamprey entrance efficiency, but entrance efficiency during reduced velocity tests was not significantly higher than during control conditions.  相似文献

Suspension feeders concentrate organic material from the water column and enhance deposition to the surrounding benthos. On the South Fork of the Eel River (Mendocino, California) two suspension feeders, the freshwater mussel Margaritifera falcata and Pacific lamprey larvae Lampetra tridentata, co‐occur in areas with low flow velocities and boundary sheer stresses. We investigated mussel/lamprey larvae interactions, and their impacts on nutrient and organic matter cycling, in flow‐through enclosures placed where lamprey larvae and mussels naturally occurred. Over the 80‐day study, lamprey larvae grew faster in the presence of mussels and in food addition treatments. Our results suggest that lamprey larvae benefit from native mussels, and that lamprey populations and organic matter retention in rivers may decrease with the rapid decline of native freshwater mussels.  相似文献

1. A survey of 12 vertebrate species showed that palmitate was bound by an albumin-like serum protein in all classes tested except the dogfish and the lamprey. 2. The major palmitate-binding protein of the Pacific lamprey was isolated and found to be of molecular mass 19,000. 3. The amino acid composition of this protein indicates that it is not a member of the albumin superfamily. 4. 1. Spatial patterns in channel morphology and substratum composition at small (1–10 metres) and large scales (1–10 kilometres) were analysed to determine the influence of habitat heterogeneity on the distribution and abundance of larval lamprey. 2. We used a nested sampling design and multiple logistic regression to evaluate spatial heterogeneity in the abundance of larval Pacific lamprey, Lampetra tridentata, and habitat in 30 sites (each composed of twelve 1‐m2 quadrat samples) distributed throughout a 55‐km section of the Middle Fork John Day River, OR, U.SA. Statistical models predicting the relative abundance of larvae both among sites (large scale) and among samples (small scale) were ranked using Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) to identify the ‘best approximating’ models from a set of a priori candidate models determined from the literature on larval lamprey habitat associations. 3. Stream habitat variables predicted patterns in larval abundance but played different roles at different spatial scales. The abundance of larvae at large scales was positively associated with water depth and open riparian canopy, whereas patchiness in larval occurrence at small scales was associated with low water velocity, channel‐unit morphology (pool habitats), and the availability of habitat suitable for burrowing. 4. Habitat variables explained variation in larval abundance at large and small scales, but locational factors, such as longitudinal position (river km) and sample location within the channel unit, explained additional variation in the logistic regression model. The results emphasise the need for spatially explicit analysis, both in examining fish habitat relationships and in developing conservation plans for declining fish populations.  相似文献

Abstract The pro-adenohypophysis (pro-AH) of migrating adult river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis, has been examined from October, when the gonads are developing slowly, until May, when the sexual maturation is completed. Two granulated cell types are dominating. One is chromophobic (C2, 95 nm), the other is basophilic (B1-B3) and probably gonadotropic. The mean diameter of the basophil secretory granules increases from 150 nm in October to 220 nm in April and May. The staining affinity of a rare, granulated cell type (D, 115 nm) has not been established. No acidophil cells are found in the pro-AH. The ultrastructural characteristics of the lead hematoxylin positive cells found sometimes in paraffin sections are unknown. Non-glandular stellate cells are common. They contain microfilaments, are probably contractile, and transform to phagocytes during the last months before spawning. This phagocytosis involves only the basophil cells. It is suggested that the stellate cells in this way destroy excess hormone. All cell types in the pituitary accumulate large irregular lipid droplets during the last month before spawning. These lipid droplets seem to be expelled from residual bodies as an end product of autolysis and phagocytosis.  相似文献

采用光镜和电镜技术研究日本七鳃鳗(Lampetra japonica)消化系统的组织结构。结果显示,日本七鳃鳗食道褶皱处黏膜上皮为复层立方上皮,褶皱基部为变移上皮。由于生活方式的特化,其胃退化。前肠、中肠和后肠黏膜上皮均为单层柱状上皮,其中并未发现杯状细胞,有肠腺,肠上皮有密集的纤毛,上皮细胞内各种细胞器均较丰富,肌纤维斜行。肝小叶界限不清,肝内无胆管。内分泌性胰由若干个大小不等和形状不定的细胞团组成。口腔腺上皮细胞高柱状,游离端充满酶原颗粒和微管泡系,细胞间有分泌小管。日本七鳃鳗消化器官的组织结构特点与其特殊的取食方式和进化地位密切相关。  相似文献

Radio-tagged adult Pacific lamprey Entosphenus tridentatus held in a raceway with Plexiglas-lined walls and bottom healed more slowly and retained sutures longer than fish held in an all-concrete raceway or one with Plexiglas walls and a cobble-lined bottom. On all substrata, healing depended on when sutures were lost, and fish that lost their sutures in <14 days post-surgery healed faster than those that kept sutures longer. The regulation of the Jamari River advanced peak floods by 1–2 months and increased dry-season discharges from 60 to 200 m3 s–1, resulting in water levels approximately 1 m above those recorded before regulation. Daily variation in water level associated with fluctuations in electricity production by the dam propagated to the lower reaches of the tributary Candeias River. Dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, pH, and conductivity measured over 1.5 years on three locations along the regulated and two free-flowing rivers indicated important alterations in the case of oxygen concentrations. DO levels shifted from saturated (7–8 mg l–1) during the flood season (when the spillways were open releasing epilimnetic water) to hypoxic (1.5–3 mg l–1) during the dry season (when the floodgates were closed and only hypolimnetic water used to run the turbines was feeding the river). Fluctuations in water level and variation in dissolved oxygen tended to be greater at the site closest to the dam, gradually attenuating downstream. Mitigation of the downstream effects of river regulation would require modifications in the operation of the dam.  相似文献

The retinal pigment epithelium of Lampetra fluviatilis was studied by electron microscopy. The epithelial cells differ in many details from those of gnathostomes. The lateral cell membranes are difficult to distinguish. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is well developed; in some animals undulated membrane complexes, comprising systems of tightly fused double membrane plates, are related to the endoplasmic reticulum. Myeloid bodies are common and well developed, but pigment granules are comparatively sparse. The intercellular space between pigment epithelium and photoreceptors is rather wide. There are only a few inclusion bodies with membranous contents. The importance of the pigment epithelium in the retinal metabolic exchange is discussed in view of the fine structure of the cells. Compared with that of hagfishes, the lamprey retina is well developed. However, any comparison must be made against the background of a diphyletic development of the two groups.  相似文献

Little research has been devoted to the investigation of swimming energetics and performance in lie-in-wait predators. This study evaluated activity metabolism and swimming performance in juvenile snook, Centropomus undecimalis, a lie-in-wait predator, by determining oxygen uptake in a tunnel respirometer. Compared to previously reported results for more actively foraging species (i.e., white crappie, rainbow trout), snook exhibited lower maintenance metabolism (58.6ml O2kg–1WMh–1) and greater metabolic expansibility (6.5). Relative critical swimming speeds decreased isometrically with length, implying that small snook are capable of prolonged swimming in velocity regimes similar to those experienced by larger individuals. Swimming was most efficient at the transition between pectoral (low-speed) and caudal (high-speed) propulsion. The results of this study support previous speculation that maintenance costs may be reduced in lie-in-wait predators compared to other fishes.  相似文献

A critical analysis of literature data on the distribution, morphology, and phylogeography of the Arctic lamprey (Lethenteron camtschaticum) and five species of marine and anadromous fish such as navaga (Eleginus navaga), pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax dentex), Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii), and pond smelt (Hypomesus olidus) has been performed. The results show that all these species have colonized Northern European seas, distributing along the Arctic coastline of Eurasia after the glacier retreat. The reasons that the dispersal of these species in the Atlantic Ocean may be impeded (preference for a cold environment, competition, and decrease of the evolutionary potential) are discussed.  相似文献

Temperature and sea level are predicted to rise with climate change, bringing an urgency to evaluating future viability of native fish. Lamprey are confronted with widespread habitat degradation, migratory barriers, and episodes of environmental change projected to be commonplace in the future. In California, range contraction likely shifted lamprey rearing downstream, but the extent and physiological constraints that restrict estuarine rearing are unclear. We used a single-season occupancy model to describe juvenile lamprey estuarine distribution and found occupancy was regionally variable and constrained by temperature. Habitat and hydrology providing thermal refugia may be critical for future persistence.  相似文献

The effectiveness of morphometric and meristic characteristics for taxonomic discrimination of Lampetra tridentata and L. richardsoni (Petromyzonidae) during embryological, prolarval, and early larval stages (i.e., age class 1) were examined. Mean chorion diameter increased with time from fertilization to hatch and was significantly greater for L. tridentata than for L. richardsoni at 1, 8, and 15 days postfertilization. Lampetra tridentata larvae had significantly more trunk myomeres than L. richardsoni; however, trunk myomere numbers were highly variable within species and deviated from previously published data. Multivariate examinations of prolarval and larval L. tridentata (7.2-11.0 mm; standard length) and L. richardsoni (6.6-10.8 mm) were conducted based on standard length and truss element lengths established from eight homologous landmarks. Principal components analysis indicated allometric relationships among the morphometric characteristics examined. Changes in body shape were indicated by groupings of morphometric characteristics associated with body regions (e.g., oral hood, branchial region, trunk region, and tail region). Discriminant function analysis using morphometric characteristics was successful in classifying a large proportion (> 94.7%) of the lampreys sampled.  相似文献

After incubation of lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis erythrocytes in the standard medium for 90–120 min, intracellular Na+ and K+ content remained unchanged (28.7 ± 1.1 and 66.3 ± 1.5 mmol/l cells, respectively, n = 33). The erythrocyte ion content also did not change after treatment of the cells with ion transport inhibitors, Ba2 + and amiloride. Addition of 0.1 mM ouabain to the incubation medium led to a decrease of K+ content by 8.4 ± 1.2 and to an increase of Na+ content by 2.4 ± 0.8 mmol/l/2 h. Similar reciprocal changes in the cellular ion composition were observed after treatment of the erythrocytes by oxidative metabolism inhibitors (rotenone and CCCP—carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenyl-hydrazone). The metabolic blockers produced more significant ion composition changes in comparison with ouabain. An increase of intracellular Na+ content under effect of CCCP was completely inhibited by amiloride. It can be suggested that inhibition of oxidative metabolism is accompanied by a cell acidification and Na+/H+ exchange activation. Erythrocyte acidification by a K+/H+ ionophore led to a rapid cellular Na+ accumulation, which indicates the presence of a Na+/H+ exchanger with high activity. The K+ ionophore valinomycin produced a relatively small K+ loss from the lamprey erythrocytes to indicate a low anion conductance of the cells. The data obtained indicate an important role of oxidative metabolism in the monovalent ion homeostasis in the lamprey red blood cells.  相似文献

A number of investigations have been made on mammals, birds and teleost fishes by the Falck-Hillarp method for the cellular demonstration of such amines.
