Summary Four populations of Abies concolor, white fir, were sampled along an elevational transect in the central Sierra Nevada mountains of California. This paper is based on data taken during the first two years' growth in a nearby nursery at Placerville, California. Ten of the thirteen growth, size, and needle morphological characteristics had significant differences between population samples, while eleven characteristics had significant differences between open-pollinated families within the population samples. High-elevation population samples were smaller in size and needle measurements, had fewer adaxial stomatal rows, blunter needle tips, and a shorter growing season. Most characteristic values were distributed ecotypically between the two lower- and the two higher-elevation population samples. Analyses of the patterns of variation demonstrated that characteristics of size and growth showed greater differentiation between population samples than did characteristics of needle morphology. It was concluded that the differences between characteristic patterns were caused by the more intense selection pressures acting upon the characteristics of size and growth. No consistent differences were discovered between these population samples in terms of total amounts of within-population genetic variation. The failure to find differences in intra-population variation may be due to the high rates of migration that probably exist within such a transect, and the fact that none of the populations included in this study are truly marginal. There were large differences between characteristics for total within-population variation; a positive but non-significant correlation was found between high coefficients of variation and those characteristics with much differentiation between populations. It is postulated that the maintenance of this intra-population variation was caused by microhabitat adaptations and gene flow. Evidence for increased genetic variation within open-pollinated families due to pollen immigration is presented, and its implications discussed.  相似文献

Bacterial populations usually consist of distinct clones, often apparently adapted to specific niches. A formal model is developed whereby niche-specific selection maintains the polymorphisms involved in clonal adaptation. Infrequent transfer of non-adaptive alleles to a clone is balanced by the selection for the resident adaptive allele. The model can account for the extensive polymorphism in surface antigens observed in bacteria, and also for the existence of sympatric clones of pathogenic species which differ in host range and/or mode of pathogenesis. Niche-specific selection combined with low levels of genetic transfer can also account for the high level of neutral variation in bacteria, and indirectly for their ability to respond rapidly to environmental changes.  相似文献

Majorant estimations of the probabilities pr for the surviving of the clone of the dividing cells have been obtained in the catastrophic situation (monotonous diminishing of the clone almost to zero during the period of time from t=0 to t=T, T approximately 100 generation). At t=0 the clone consisted of 10(6) individuals. Average selection coefficient (s) was found to determine pr only roughly, that is the clone with s greater than --0.09 survives almost in all cases, whereas the clone with s greater than --0.13 becomes extinct practically always. Within this interval ps-inversion can be observed, i.e. preferential surviving of the clone with a worse s value. Results of three communications lead to the conclusion that the mutants with small selective advantage practically cannot be selected.  相似文献

Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) sequence evolution and population heterogeneity were examined by T1 oligonucleotide mapping. Individual clones isolated from clonal pools of wild-type Indiana serotype VSV displayed identical T1 maps. This was observed even after one passage at high concentrations of the potent viral mutagen 5-fluorouracil. Under low-multiplicity passage conditions, the consensus T1 fingerprint of this virus remained unchanged after 523 passages. Interestingly, however, individual clones from this population (passage 523) differed significantly from each other and from consensus sequence. When virus population equilibria were disrupted by high-multiplicity passage (in which defective interfering particle interference is maximized) or passage in the presence of mutagenic levels of 5-fluorouracil, rapid consensus sequence evolution occurred and extreme population heterogeneity was observed (with some members of these population differing from others at hundreds of genome positions). A limited sampling of clones at one stage during high-multiplicity passages suggested the presence of at least several distinct master sequences, the related subpopulations of which exhibit at least transient competitive fitness within the total virus population (M. Eigen and C.K. Biebricher, p. 211-245, in E. Domingo, J.J. Holland, P. Ahlquist, ed., RNA Genetics, vol. 3, 1988). These studies further demonstrate the important role of selective pressure in determining the genetic composition of RNA virus populations. This is true under equilibrium conditions in which little consensus sequence evolution is observed owing to stabilizing selection as well as under conditions in which selective pressure is driving rapid RNA virus genome evolution.  相似文献

The potential of maintaining multilocus polymorphism by migration-selection balance is studied. A large population of diploid individuals is distributed over finitely many demes connected by migration. Generations are discrete and nonoverlapping, selection may vary across demes, and loci are multiallelic. It is shown that if migration and recombination are strong relative to selection, then with weak or no epistasis and intermediate dominance at every locus and in every deme, arbitrarily many alleles can be maintained at arbitrarily many loci at a stable equilibrium. If migration is weak relative to selection and recombination, then with weak or no epistasis and intermediate dominance at every locus and in every deme, as many alleles as there are demes can be maintained at arbitrarily many loci at equilibrium. In both cases open sets of such parameter combinations are constructed, thus the results are robust with respect to small, but arbitrary, perturbations in the parameters. For weak migration, the number of demes is, in fact, a generic upper bound to the number of alleles that can be maintained at any locus. Thus, several scenarios are identified under which multilocus polymorphism can be maintained by migration-selection balance when this is impossible in a panmictic population.   相似文献

Two mitochondrial populations with cytochrome c oxidase activity, and densities of 1.07 and 1.08 g/ml have been separated by means of a dextran-sucrose gradient. The highest enzymatic specific activity appeared in the 1.07 g/ml band. The mitochondria assayed by their in vivo cycloheximide resistant leucine incorporation appeared at the 1.08 g/ml density band of the gradient. Some amount of activity of cytochrome c oxidase, and leucine incorporation appeared at the bottom of the gradient. The cytochrome spectra in liquid nitrogen of each band showed different proportion of cytochrome(s) a, b and c. The highest ratio of cytochrome a and cytochrome b in respect to cytochrome c appeared in the 1.08 g/ml band.  相似文献

The distribution of mitochondria from Aspergillus nidulans on a dextran-sucrose gradient resulted in the fractionation of three bands. The lightest band presented the highest respiratory and cytochrome c oxidase activities and was also the most active in the incorporation of tritiated glycerol. Pulse-chase experiments with 3H-glycerol suggested that mitochondria from the light band was transformed to denser organelles as the organism grew.  相似文献
