Weanling male and female field voles from laboratory stock and from the F1 generation of wild-caught animals were placed in a long (16L:8D) or short (6L:18D) photoperiod for 28 or 56 days. Both types of field vole showed the well-established effect of photoperiod upon sexual maturation, with animals in the long photoperiod having larger and more active gonads than animals in the short photoperiod. After 28 and 56 days laboratory stock females were more mature, sexually, and had a higher growth rate than did Wild F1 females. There was no difference between the two types of males at 28 days, but by 56 days laboratory stock males were more sexually mature and had a higher growth rate than did Wild F1 males. These differences between the two types occurred in the long and short photoperiods. There was no interaction between photoperiod and type of vole. The use of laboratory stock animals in experiments could lead to an incorrect assessment of the effect of photoperiod in the control of seasonal breeding in wild populations.  相似文献

Adult male prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) were housed for 10 wk and exposed to long (16L:8D) or short (8L:16D) photoperiods at 21 degrees or 5 degrees C. Maintenance in short day lengths reduced testicular, epididymal, and seminal vesicle mass and also significantly depressed spermatogenic activity. Cold ambient temperature further suppressed gonadal size in voles exposed to short days. Several pelage characteristics were affected by photoperiod, but not by temperature. Increased fur density, fur depth, and length of guard hair and underhair were observed in voles exposed to short days. Intrascapular brown fat and gonadal fat pad mass as well as body mass were significantly less in voles housed in cold temperatures than in voles exposed to warm ambient temperatures; photoperiod did not affect these parameters. Approximately 30% of the male voles exposed to short days maintained their reproductive systems, yet they clearly processed photoperiodic information; all short-day males, regardless of reproductive condition, had comparable winter pelage development. Our results suggest that in prairie voles, photoperiod may be a predictive cue for reproductive function in nature; however, it appears that pelage development is a more obligatory response to photoperiod than is reproduction.  相似文献

Rates of growth and sexual maturation of microtine rodents vary in response to photoperiod. Previous work with Microtus montanus has shown that the photoperiod present prior to weaning influences how voles will respond to photoperiods seen following weaning. The data presented demonstrate that information about the photoperiod seen by the mother during pregnancy influences the postweaning development of male M. montanus. Adult M. montanus were paired in photoperiods consisting of 8, 14 or 16 h light/day. Their litters were conceived and born in these photoperiods. On the day of birth the litters were recorded and retained in the gestation photoperiod (Groups C8, C14 and C16) or transferred to the 14-h photoperiod (Groups E8 and E16). The growth of males was followed from weaning until 74 days of age, at which time the voles were sacrificed and their reproductive organs weighed. There were no differences in body weight or length between groups at 18 days of age. At 74 days of age the development of the voles could be ranked in the following sequence: C8 less than E16 less than C14 less than E8 less than C16.  相似文献

House mice (Mus musculus) have traditionally been characterized as nonphotoperiodic because reproductive function is unaffected by day length in the laboratory. In the present study, the reproductive responsiveness of CF1 mice to a naturally occurring plant metabolite was assessed in animals that were maintained in either long (16L:8D) or short (8L:16D) photoperiods from birth until the end of the study. Males and females were implanted i.p. with either an empty Silastic capsule or one containing 6-methoxy-2-benzoxazolinone (6-MBOA) at either 21 or 60 days of age for 3 days. Other 31-day-old mice were implanted with capsules for 8 wk. Three-day exposure to 6-MBOA stimulated uterine growth in short-day, adult females, but did not affect adult females housed in long photoperiods. Short-term treatment with 6-MBOA did not significantly affect reproductive parameters in either long- or short-day peripubertal house mice, or in adult males regardless of photoperiod, nor did exposure to 6-MBOA for 8 wk influence reproduction in males in either photoperiodic condition. However, short-day female mice had significantly reduced ovarian and uterine masses after 8 wk chronic 6-MBOA treatment as compared to long-day animals or mice unexposed to 6-MBOA. Short-day females exposed to 6-MBOA for 8 wk developed a denser pelage compared to long-day mice treated with this compound. Photoperiod-mediated differential responsiveness to 6-MBOA indicates that female house mice can discriminate long from short days, and these results suggest that the physiological mechanisms for photoperiodic responsiveness remain extant in this species previously characterized as nonphotperiodic.  相似文献

Four experiments examined the role of photoperiod in the regulation of seasonal breeding in the prairie vole. Adult male voles maintained in short (8L:16D) as compared to long (16L:8D) photoperiods for 10 wk had reduced testicular and seminal vesicle weights, but fertility was not impaired. Male prairie voles reared from birth until 35 days of age in short as compared to long photoperiods also had reduced testicular and seminal vesicle weights, as well as diminished fertility. The incidence of pregnancy did not differ between long- and short-day female voles paired for 6 days with long- or short-day males (93%, 86%, 89%, and 88%, respectively). Photoperiod did not affect the incidence or the timing of postpartum pregnancies in long- or short-day females paired with long-day males through the birth of several litters. Adult male prairie voles retain only marginal sensitivity to short photoperiods, maturing males are highly responsive to short days, and adult females are insensitive to photoperiod. These data suggest that termination of the breeding season in the autumn may be due to the lack of fecund males in the population.  相似文献

Individuals of numerous species limit energy expenditure during winter by inhibiting reproduction and other nonessential functions. To time these adaptations appropriately with the annual cycle, animals rely on environmental cues that predict, well in advance, the onset of winter. The most commonly studied environmental factor that animals use to time reproduction is photoperiod. Rodents housed in short photoperiods in the laboratory or in naturally declining day lengths exhibit pronounced alterations in reproductive function concomitant with alterations in the hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone neuronal system. Because animals in their natural environment use factors in addition to photoperiod to time reproduction, the present study sought to determine the independent effects of photoperiod and temperature, as well as the interaction between these factors, on reproductive parameters and the GnRH neuronal system. Male prairie voles were housed in either long (LD 16:8) or short (LD 8:16) day lengths for 10 weeks. Animals in each photoperiod were further subdivided into groups housed in either mild (i.e., 20 degrees C) or low (i.e., 8 degrees C) temperatures. As shown with immunohistochemistry, voles that underwent gonadal regression in response to short photoperiods and long-day voles housed in low temperatures (and maintained large gonads) exhibit higher GnRH-immunoreactive (GnRH-ir) neuron numbers in the preoptic area/anterior hypothalamus (POA/AH) relative to all other groups. In addition, voles that underwent gonadal regression in response to both short days and low temperatures did not exhibit an increase in GnRH-ir neuron numbers compared to long-day, mild-temperature controls. These data suggest that photoperiod and temperature interact to influence reproductive function potentially by alterations of the GnRH neuronal system.  相似文献

Environmental factors play an important role in the seasonal adaptation of body mass and thermogenesis in wild small mammals. In this study, we performed a factorial experiment (temperature x photoperiod) in which Brandt's voles and Mongolian gerbils were acclimated to different photoperiods (long photoperiod, 16L : 8D; short photoperiod, 8L : 16D) and temperatures (warm, 23 degrees C; cold, 5 degrees C) to test the hypothesis that photoperiod, temperature, or both together can trigger seasonal changes in serum leptin level, body mass, thermogenesis, and energy intake. Our data demonstrate that Brandt's voles showed a remarkable decrease in body mass in both the cold and a short photoperiod. However, no significant changes in body mass were found for gerbils exposed to similar conditions. The short photoperiod induced a decrease in serum leptin levels for both voles and gerbils that might contribute to an increase in energy intake. Furthermore, the short photoperiod induced an increase of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) content for both voles and gerbils, and cold can further enhance the increase in voles. No interactions between photoperiod and temperature were detected for the two species. Brandt's voles can decrease their body mass through changes in energy intake and expenditure, while Mongolian gerbils can keep body mass relatively stable by balancing energy metabolism under winterlike conditions. Leptin was potentially involved in the regulation of body mass and thermogenic capacity for the two species.  相似文献

To examine the interactions between age and photoperiod on reproduction and spleen weights, we exposed adult male and female rice rats of various ages to photoperiods of 16:8-h light-dark photoperiods (16L:8D) or 12L:12D. After 10 wk, animals were killed and the following data were recorded: weights of testes, seminal vesicles, uterus, ovaries, body, and spleen and, in addition, vaginal patency. Young adult males displayed a greater degree of testicular and seminal vesicle regression in short photoperiods than did older males; the testes of most older males did not regress in response to short photoperiods. Spleen weight was unresponsive to short photoperiods in all males, but was affected by age. Females, however, exhibited reproductive organ regression and decreased vaginal patency in response to short photoperiods at all ages examined. Body weights were affected by photoperiod in young females, and, as in males, photoperiod had no effect on spleen weights. These data suggest that the reproductive response to photoperiod in adult male rice rats declines with age, whereas in adult females it does not.  相似文献

Male California voles were maintained in long (14L:10D) or short photoperiods (10L:14D) for 10 weeks and fed a standard diet of rabbit chow and water ad libitum. One additional group in each photoperiod received the standard diet plus supplements of spinach 3 times weekly. A fifth group was housed in 14L:10D and fed the standard diet, but for 10 weeks water availability was restricted to several hours each morning. Testes and seminal vesicles were heaviest in long-day voles fed spinach supplements and lightest in short-day voles fed only the standard diet; the latter animals manifested reduced testicular spermatogenesis. Testicular weights were also depressed in voles with restricted access to water. It is suggested that photoperiods that simulate those of winter induce regression of the reproductive organs of male California voles but the availability of green vegetation counteracts the inhibitory effects of short daylengths.  相似文献

2. 2. Testes regressed when animals were exposed to a short photoperiod (L:D 8:16) and recrudesced under a long photoperiod (L:D 16:8).
3. 3. Animals entered torpor under both photoperiods and no significant differences were observed in the frequency or physiological variables of torpor of S. crassicaudata between the short and long photoperiods.
4. 4. The differences in the response to photoperiod in thermal physiology and reproduction suggest that, unlike in many rodent species, torpor and reproduction in S. crassicaudata are controlled by separate environmental cues and mechanisms.

The concept of critical day length is well established among rodents; reproductive function is maintained when day lengths are greater than some specific threshold. In addition to day length cues, seasonal breeding in deer mice can also be regulated by food availability. The caloric threshold necessary to support reproduction remains unspecified for seasonally breeding rodents. The present study examined the interaction between photoperiod and food availability on reproductive function in adult male deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). A critical caloric intake profile was constructed in long (16L:8D) and short (8L:16D) photoperiods; groups of deer mice in both photoperiods either received food ad libitum or 90, 80, or 70% of their individual ad libitum food intake for 10 wk. At autopsy, paired testes, epididymides, and seminal vesicles were removed and weighed. Body mass, total body fat, and total body water contents were also obtained. Short, as compared to long, day lengths inhibited the reproductive systems of male deer mice. However, food consumption interacted with photoperiod to affect reproductive function. Significant reductions in reproductive organ size as well as spermatogenic activity were observed among short-day mice after a 10% reduction in ad libitum food intake. Long-day animals required a 20% reduction in caloric intake to depress reproductive function. Body mass and total body water content were generally unaffected by either photoperiod or food consumption. Total body fat content was reduced in short- as compared to long-day mice. Individual reproductive responsiveness to short days increased as food availability decreased.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Melatonin secretion in ewes was entrained by 22-h light-dark cycles whether of long (16L:6D) or short (6L:16D) photoperiod. In photoperiods of 6L:16D, a phase-delay of melatonin secretion was evident, leading to a dark-phase duration shorter than that found in 8L:16D. Early onset of estrus was induced in anestrous ewes kept in 8L:16D, but not 6L:16D, from 22 July compared to controls in natural light. In photoperiods of 16L:6D, the melatonin profile corresponded precisely to the dark phase. Early offset of estrus was induced in estrous ewes kept in both 18L:6D and 16L:6D from 18 December compared to controls in natural light. Thus, when the duration of melatonin secretion was appropriate to the long photoperiod (16L:6D), but with a constantly changing phase position, a long-day reproductive response was found. Activity-rest cycles were not entrained by 16L:6D; thus the synchronization of melatonin and activity-rest cycles does not appear to be essential for the induction of a long-day reproductive response. These results support the hypothesis that the duration, not the circadian-phase position, of melatonin is critical to the induction of photoperiodic effects.  相似文献

The effects of duration and variation in photoperiod on testis weight, testicular sperm production, semen output, and hormone status over the reproductive season in male turkeys were investigated. In Experiment 1, four groups of males raised from 17 to 23 wk of age under a constant short photoperiod were subjected to a constant short (Group 1: 7L:17D; Group 2: 10.5L:13.5D), constant long (Group 3: 14L:10D) or progressively increasing photoperiod (Group 4: 7L:17D to 14L:10D) up to 60 wk of age. In Experiment 2, four groups of males first raised as in Experiment 1 up to 23 wk of age were placed under a constant short (Group 5: 10.5L:13.5D), constant long (Group 6: 14L:10D), or night-interrupted photoperiod (Group 7: 6L:2.5D:1L:14.5D, referred to as subjective 9.5L:14.5D; Group 8: 6L:3.5D:1L:13.5D), referred to as subjective 10.5L:13.5D) up to 60 wk of age. Males in Groups 2-4 had similar reproductive characteristics, whereas sexual maturity was delayed from 29 to 49 wk in males from Group 1. In Experiment 2, males in Groups 5 and 8 had similar reproductive characteristics, whereas sexual maturity was delayed in males in Group 7 in a manner similar to that observed in Group 1. In both experiments, plasma LH and testosterone concentrations were poor indicators of testis development and semen production, irrespective of age and photoperiod. We conclude that a moderately short photoperiod such as 10.5L:13.5D or subjective 10.5L:13.5D may stimulate reproductive characteristics of male turkeys in a manner comparable to constant long or increasing photoperiods. We inferred the existence of a threshold of photosensitivity in male turkeys for photoperiods longer than 9.5L:14.5D, but shorter than or equal to 10.5L:13.5D.  相似文献

Daylengths during the spring are repeated in reverse order in the autumn. For some photoperiodic species, a given photoperiod may be stimulatory for reproduction in the spring and inhibitory in the autumn. The mechanisms regulating this type of seasonal response have, until recently, remained a mystery. Horton (1984a) showed in Microtus montanus that the photoperiod experienced by the mother influences the gonadal development of her young after weaning. To determine if this phenomenon is characteristic of other photoperiodic rodents, adult Djungarian hamsters were paired on 16L:8D, 14L:10D, or 12L:12D. Young males born from these pairings were killed at 15, 28, and 34 days of age to assess gonadal development (testes weight). At 15 days testicular development was identical in all groups; by 28 days, however, males raised in 16L:8D or 14L:10D exhibited a greater degree of testicular development than those raised in 12L:12D. Next, females maintained on each of the three photoperiods throughout gestation were transferred, with their offspring, to the other two photoperiods at birth. Postnatal exposure to 14L:10D or 12L:12D inhibited testicular development in young that had been gestated on 16L:8D. Both 16L:8D and 14L:10D stimulated testicular growth in animals that had been gestated on 12L:12D or 14L:10D. Therefore, a) 16L:8D stimulates testicular growth in all animals, b) 12L:12D inhibits testicular growth in all animals, and c) the testicular response to 14L:10D depends on the photoperiod experienced by the mother during pregnancy.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Adult male marbled newts (Triturus marmoratus) were collected at the end of the spermatogenesis period and exposed to different photoperiods (natural-daylength-simulated photoperiod, total darkness, 8L:16D, 12L:12D, 16L:8D, and continuous light) for 3 mo. Temperature was maintained at 20 degrees C. Two additional groups of newts were blinded and exposed to either the natural-simulated photoperiod and to 16 h of light per day respectively. Quantitative histologic studies on testicular development and germ cell volume per testis were performed. The newts captured in the field at the beginning (initial controls) or at the end of the experiments (final controls) were in the period of testicular quiescence. Newts kept in total darkness or exposed to a short photoperiod (8L:16D) showed germ cell development up to primary spermatocytes, whereas germ cell development in the newts exposed to long photoperiods (12L:12D or 16L:8D) progressed to elongated spermatids. The newts exposed either to intermediate photoperiods (natural-simulated photoperiod) or to constant light showed an intermediate degree of germ cell development (up to round spermatids). No significant differences between non-blinded and blinded animals were found. These results suggest that (1) mild temperature initiates testicular development in the period of testicular quiescence, (2) long photoperiods associated with mild temperatures produce spermatogenesis in this period, (3) complete darkness or constant light are less effective than some intermediate photoperiod, and (4) the effect of photoperiod on testicular function in newts is not related to ocular photoreception.  相似文献

Photoperiod is the major regulator of reproduction in temperate-zone mammals. Laboratory rats are generally considered to be nonphotoresponsive, but young male Fischer 344 (F344) rats have a uniquely robust response to short photoperiods of 8 h of light. Rats transferred at weaning from a photoperiod of 16 h to photoperiods of < 14 h of light slowed in both reproductive development and somatic growth rate. Those in photoperiods < 13 h of light underwent the strongest responses. The critical photoperiod of F344 rats can be defined as 13.5 h of light, but photoperiods of 相似文献

Peripubertal reproductive development of Siberian hamsters is influenced by photoperiodic information received during gestation; the maternal pineal is important for this process. We observed that in the absence of the maternal pineal, the fetus appears to receive no information about gestational photoperiods. This is not the equivalent of receipt of a long-day signal by the fetus. Pinealectomized and sham-operated pregnant females were exposed to photoperiods of 12L:12D, 14L:10D, 16L:8D, or constant light (LL); young were reared from birth to 28 days of age in LL or 14L:10D. Regardless of the gestational photoperiod, LL-reared male young born to pinealectomized dams had smaller testes than LL-reared young of pineal-intact dams exposed to 16L:8D while pregnant. Thus, pinealectomy did not result in transmission of a long-day signal, nor did young born of pinealectomized dams receive short- or intermediate-day signals. Unlike young of pineal-intact females exposed to 12L:12D or 14L:10D while pregnant, young born of pinealectomized dams had small testes when reared in 14L:10D, irrespective of gestational photoperiod. Uterine weights of female young presented similar patterns of responses. In a second experiment, adult females were entrained to 12L:12D, 14L:10D, or 16L:8D for 3 wk prior to pinealectomy to determine if the effect of maternal pinealectomy would be altered. Entrainment to the new photoperiod prior to surgery did not alter the effects of maternal pinealectomy.  相似文献

Transfer of adult Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) from long (16 h light and 8 h dark, 16L:8D) to short (8L:16D) daily photoperiods induces an involution of the gonads and a cessation of reproductive behavior 8 to 10 weeks later. However, when male and female long-day hamsters were paired on transfer to short photoperiods, the males' gonads did not undergo the typical short-day response. Similarly, when male long-day hamsters were paired with refractory females (i.e., females housed in short photoperiods for at least 28 weeks so that they became unresponsive to short photoperiods), the response of the males' reproductive system to short photoperiods also was attenuated. Thus, social cues can override or delay the effects of photoperiod on the testes of this species. These results suggest that the inhibitory effects of long durations of melatonin secretion (in response to short photoperiods) on the male hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis may be attenuated by social cues such as contact with the opposite sex.  相似文献
