The aim of this work is to report on the physical characteristics of carrier material (perlite), biomass growth on the carrier material and the biogas production during an apparent steady state period in an inverse anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (IAFBR) for treating high strength organic wastewater. Before starting up the reactor, physical properties of the carrier material were determined. One millimeter diameter perlite particle is found to have a wet specific density of 295 kg/m(3) with specific surface area of 7.010 m(2)/g. This material has provided a good surface for biomass attachment and development. The biofilm concentration (in terms of attached volatile solids (AVS)) attached to carrier material was found to be 0.66 g(AVS)/g(solid). Most particles have been covered with a thin biofilm of uniform thickness. Once the inverse anaerobic fluidized bed system reached the steady state, the organic load was increased step wise by reducing hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 2 days to 0.16 day, while maintaining the constant feed of chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration. This system has achieved 84% COD removal and reached the biogas production of 13.22 l/l/d at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 35 kgCOD/m(3)/d.  相似文献

This article describes the bed expansion characteristics of a down-flow anaerobic fluidized bed reactor treating a synthetic wastewater. Experiments were carried out in a 0.08 m diameter and 1 m length PVC column. The carrier used was ground perlite (an expanded volcanic rock). Particles characteristics were 0.968 mm in diameter, specific density of 213 kg x m-3 and Umf (minimal fluidization velocity): 2.3 m x h-1. Experimental data of terminal velocities and bed expansion parameters at several biofilm thicknesses were compared to different models predicting the bed expansion of up-flow and down-flow fluidized beds. Measured bed porosities at different liquid superficial velocities for the different biofilm thicknesses were in agreement with the Richardson-Zaki model, when Ut (particle terminal velocity) and n (expansion coefficient) were calculated by linear regression of the experimental data. Terminal velocities of particles at different biofilm thicknesses calculated from experimental bed expansion data, were found to be much smaller than those obtained when Cd (drag coefficient) is determined from the standard drag curve (Lapple and Sheperd, 1940) or with others' correlations (Karamanev and Nikolov, 1992a,b). This difference could be explained by the fact that free-rising particles do not obey Newton's law for free-settling, as proposed by Karamanev and Nikolov (1992a,b) and Karamanev et al. (1996). In the present study, the same free-rising behavior was observed for all particles (densities between 213 and 490 kg x m-3).  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of wastewater from a distillery industry having very high COD (1,10,000-1,90,000 mg/L) and BOD (50,000-60,000 mg/L) was studied in a continuously fed, up flow fixed film column reactor using different support materials such as charcoal, coconut coir and nylon fibers under varying hydraulic retention time and organic loading rates. The seed consortium was prepared by enrichment with distillery spent wash in a conventional type reactor having working capacity of 3 L and was used for charging the anaerobic column reactor. Amongst the various support materials studied the reactor having coconut coir could treat distillery spent wash at 8d hydraulic retention time with organic loading rate of 23.25 kg COD m(-3)d(-1) leading to 64% COD reduction with biogas production of 7.2 m3 m(-3)d(-1) having high methane yield without any pretreatment or neutralization of the distillery spent wash. This study indicates fixed film biomethanation of distillery spent wash using coconut coir as the support material appears to be a cost effective and promising technology for mitigating the problems caused by distillery effluent.  相似文献

Support materials of low‐density for fluidized bed reactors provide several operational advantages, including lower energy requirements and proper biofilm growth balance. The aim of this investigation was to study the extent of biofilm growth and bed fluidization in an experimental reactor, using polyester resin (ρpr = 1220 kg/m3) and vitrified expanded perlite (ρvep = 1710 kg/m3) as alternative support materials to conventional silica sand. A noteworthy amount of biofilm was observed to be attached to both support materials from the very beginning of the bioreactor operation. Nevertheless, there were significant variations in biofilm growth and activity over the course of the experimental trials. For both perlite and polyester beds, the highest biofilm mass and the highest total number of mesophilic bacteria were observed between the 7th and the 10th day, showing a steady state trend at the end of the experimental runs. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal levels were concomitant with biofilm mass and total mesophilic bacteria changes, although the polyester bed efficiency was slightly higher than that for the perlite bed. As expected, the polyester bed was fluidized at a lower re‐circulation flow compared to the perlite bed. Reactor back‐washing was not required for these support materials since biomass excess was adequately separated by means of a special internal device. The efficiencies of removal of organic matter achieved were acceptable (up to 78 %) despite the low volume of the support material (25 %) and the low hydraulic retention time (30 min).  相似文献

The study was aimed at treating the complex, combined wastewater generated in Mangolpuri industrial cluster. It was considered as a low strength wastewater with respect to its organic content. Anaerobic treatment of this wastewater was studied using an anaerobic hybrid reactor (AHR) which combined the best features of both the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and anaerobic fluidized bed rector (AFBR). The performance of the reactor under different organic and hydraulic loading rates were studied. The COD removal reached 94% at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 2.08 kg COD m(-3)d(-1) at an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6.0 h. The granules developed were characterized in terms of their diameter and terminal settling velocity.  相似文献

The ability of an anaerobic hybrid reactor, treating coffee wastewater, to achieve a quick start-up was tested at pilot scale. The unacclimatized seed sludge used showed a low specific methanogenic activity of 26.47 g CH4 as chemical oxygen demand (COD)/kg volatile suspended solids (VSS) x day. This strongly limited the reactor performance. After a few days of operation, a COD removal of 77.2% was obtained at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.89 kg COD/m3 x day and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 22 h. However, suddenly increasing OLR above 2.4 kg COD/m3 x day resulted in a deterioration in treatment efficiency. The reactor recovered from shock loads after shutdowns of 1 week. The hybrid design of the anaerobic reactor prevented the biomass from washing-out but gas clogging in the packing material was also observed. Wide variations in wastewater strength and flow rates prevented stable reactor operation in the short period of the study.  相似文献

This paper examines the effect of organic loading rate on the removal efficiency of COD and TOC anaerobic thermophilic fluidized bed reactor (AFBR) in the treatment of cutting-oil wastewater at different hydraulic retention time (HRT) conditions. The essays are development at laboratory scale using a porous support medium. The AFBR reactor was subjected to a programme of steady-state operation over a range of hydraulic retention times, HRTs, in the range 12-2h and organic loading rates, OLRs, between 11.9 and 51.3kgCOD/m(3)d. The highest efficiency was 95.9% for an OLR of 13kgCOD/m(3)d and HRT of 11h. Over an operating period of 92 days, an OLR of 51.3kgCOD/m(3)d was achieved with 67.1% COD removal efficiency (71.3% TOC) in the experimental AFBR reactor. Although the level of biogas generation was not high, the anaerobic fluidized bed technology provided significant advantages over the conventional physico-chemical treatment applied in the factory. The effluent had a better quality (lower organic loading) and it was possible to reuse it in different applications in the factory (e.g., irrigation of gardens). The biological treatment did not lead to the generation of oily sludge, which is considered as hazardous waste by legislation. Furthermore, a continuous stream is produced and this reduced the impact of large flows discharged 4-5 times per week to the urban collector and MWWTP (municipal wastewater treatment plant).  相似文献

Investigations were carried out by using rigid polyurethane foam as a packing material in the anaerobic contact filter (series) to treat distillery spentwash. The effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) in treatment efficiency of reactor (I) and (II) was evaluated at different initial substrate concentrations ranging from 1500 mg/l to 19,000 mg/l. The effect of toxic parameters such as sulphate present in the distillery spentwash and the corresponding parameters such as total sulphide and un-ionized hydrogen sulphide generated during digestion of wastewater were evaluated to assess the reactor performance. The results showed that at 4 d HRT the overall COD removal percent ranged from 98% to 73% for an influent COD of 1500 mg/l to 19,000 mg/l. The overall performance of COD removal percent in reactor (I) and (II) at 2, 3 and 4 d HRT's were investigated. At 3 d HRT the reactor (II) showed a higher COD removal percent when compared to reactor (I), which clearly shows the role of hydraulic retention time in degradation of the organic matter present in the wastewater above an influent COD concentration of 5000 mg/l.  相似文献

Pot ale from a pilot-scale malt whisky distillery was treated using a mesophilic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) digester. Stable operation was observed at organic loading rates (OLRs) of 5.46 kg COD/m3 day or less when the pot ale was diluted with tap water. Digester failure occurred when undiluted pot ale was used, even though OLR was less than 5 kg COD/m3 day. Overall performance was worse than that observed previously when UASB digesters were used to treat pot ale from a different source supplemented with trace elements. A substantial proportion of effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD) was present as volatile fatty acids (VFA), particularly during periods of reactor stress, indicating that overall performance was limited by the rate of VFA conversion. Wastewater alkalinity rose during digestion. The sludge which developed in the reactor was flocculent but did not form compact granules.  相似文献

Studies are carried out on the treatment of wastewater from a bulk drug industry using an anaerobic fixed film reactor (AFFR) designed and fabricated in the laboratory. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total dissolved solids (TDS) of the wastewater are found to be very high with low Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) to COD ratio and high total suspended solid (TSS) concentration. Acclimatization of seed consortia and start up of the reactor is carried out by directly using the wastewater, which resulted in reducing the period of startup to 30 days. The reactor is studied at different organic loading rates (OLR) and it is found that the optimum OLR is 10 kg COD/m3/day. The wastewater under investigation, which is having considerable quantity of SS, is treated anaerobically without any pretreatment. The COD and BOD of the reactor outlet wastewater are monitored and reduction at steady state and optimum OLR is observed to be 60-70% of COD and 80-90% of BOD. The reactor is subjected to organic shock loads at two different OLR and it is observed that the reactor could withstand shocks and performance could be restored to normalcy at that OLR. The results obtained indicated that AFFR could be used efficiently for the treatment of wastewater from a bulk drug industry having high COD, TDS and TSS.  相似文献

Brewery wastewater was treated in a pilot-scale anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) in which a floating cover(@) was employed. Long time experiments showed that the reactor worked stably and effectively for COD removal and gas production. When the organic loading rate was controlled between 1.5 kg COD/m3 d and 5.0 kg COD/m(3)d, and hydraulic retention time one day, COD removal efficiency could reach more than 90%. Sludge granulation was achieved in the reactor in approximately 60 days, which is much less than the granulation time ever reported. In addition, high specific methanogenic activity (SMA) for formate was observed. The study suggests that the ASBR technology is a potential alternative for brewery wastewater treatment.  相似文献

The supernatant of hydrothermally treated sludge was treated by an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor for a 550-days running test. The hydrothermal parameter was 170 °C for 60 min. An mesophilic 8.6 L UASB reactor was seeded with floc sludge. The final organic loading rate (OLR) could reach 18 kg COD/m3 d. At the initial stage running for 189 days, the feed supernatant was diluted, and the OLR reached 11 kg COD/m3 d. After 218 days, the reactor achieved a high OLR, and the supernatant was pumped into the reactor without dilution. The influent COD fluctuated from 20,000 to 30,000 mg/L and the COD removal rate remained at approximately 70%. After 150 days, granular sludge was observed. The energy balance calculation show that heating 1.0 kg sludge needs 0.34 MJ of energy, whereas biogas energy from the supernatant of the heated sludge is 0.43 MJ.  相似文献

Laboratory scale anaerobic upflow filter, sludge blanket and hybrid bed reactors were operated for 860 days in the treatment of high ammonia landfill leachate. Organic loading was gradually increased from 1.3 to 23.5 kg COD/m3 day in the start-up period and then fluctuated according to the COD concentration of raw leachate. To prevent free ammonia inhibition, influent pH was reduced to 4.5 after Day 181 and consequently COD removal efficiencies above 80% were achieved in all reactors. However, the anaerobic filter and hybrid bed reactor were generally found slightly more efficient and stable than the UASB reactor. In addition to conventional anaerobic reactor control parameters, the complementary techniques of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), cloning and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) were used to identify and compare the microbial profiles in the reactors at Day 830. Molecular analyses revealed that acetoclastic Methanosaeta species were prevalent in all reactors and configuration did not have an impact on microbial diversity in the long-term.  相似文献

The influence of mixing and phase hold-ups on gas-producing fluidized-bed reactors was investigated and compared with an ideal flow reactor performance (CSTR). The liquid flow in the anaerobic fluidized bed reactor could be described by the classical axially dispersed plug flow model according to measurements of residence time distribution. Gas effervescence in the fluidized bed was responsible for bed contraction and for important gas hold-up, which reduced the contact time between the liquid and the bioparticles. These results were used to support the modeling of large-scale fluidized-bed reactors. The biological kinetics were determined on a 180-L reactor treating wine distillery wastewater where the overall total organic carbon uptake velocity could be described by a Monod model. The outlet concentration and the concentration profile in the reactor appeared to be greatly influenced by hydrodynamic limitations. The biogas effervescence modifies the mixing characteristics and the phase hold-ups. Bed contraction and gas hold-up data are reported and correlated with liquid and gas velocities. It is shown that the reactor performance can be affected by 10% to 15%, depending on the mode of operation and recycle ratio used. At high organic loading rates, reactor performance is particularly sensitive to gas effervescence effects. Copyright 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Two anaerobic inverse fluidized bed reactors were utilized to evaluate organic matter removal from brewery wastewater, applying different OLR and testing two support materials. Hydrodynamic tests varying liquid flow and solid concentration were developed on the supports in order to establish operational conditions. A batch colonization stage was applied using 25% active volume of extendosphere and triturated polyethylene as support materials. The reactors were subsequently operated continuously with stepwise increments in organic loading rate until limiting conditions was reached. For the supports studied, IFBR technology was suitable for organic matter removal present in brewery wastewater with COD removal efficiencies greater than 90%. The reactor with triturated polyethylene support showed an excellent COD removal with OLR values up to 10 g COD/Ld, whereas the reactor with extendosphere support had an excellent hydrodynamic and biologic behavior working with OLR values up to 70 g COD/Ld.  相似文献
