Anaphes diana (Girault) (=Patasson lameerei Debauche), a mymarid egg parasite ofSitona spp., was introduced from Europe beginning in 1976 and is now tentatively established in the United States. Techniques are described for the separation of eggs ofSitona spp. from soil, using a series of fine-mesh sieves, water, and a saturated salt solution. Data from 9 years of sampling in an alfalfa field at Newark, Del. (>19,300 host eggs extracted), showed that the mean peak density of viable overwintering eggs ofSitona hispidulus (F.) was 14.6 per 100 cm3 of 1 cm deep surface soil. At the study site,Sitona egg densities consistently increased during the fall as a result of oviposition, peaked during January and February and decreased during the spring as a result of egg hatch. Although the incidence of parasitism byA. diana remained surprisingly low (0.29%), the fact that the species was recovered during 3 years and up to 7 years after the last release, indicates that it has colonized at the Delaware release site.   相似文献

A comparative study of the functional response ofColeomegilla maculataDeGeer (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) fourth instars was conducted under laboratory, greenhouse, and field conditions. In the laboratory, individual larvae were placed in 9-cm petri dishes for 24 h, with 1, 3, 5, or 7 Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata[Say]) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) egg masses. Each egg mass was standardized at 15 eggs. In the greenhouse and field,C. maculatalarvae were provided with an equivalent of 0.5 to 35L. decemlineataegg masses/m2of potato leaf. Fourth instars ofC. maculataexhibited a type II functional response toL. decemlineataeggs under laboratory, greenhouse, and field conditions. Predator search efficiency was inversely related with prey density. The maximum mean attack rate (8.7 eggs) byC. maculatalarvae in the field was about half the mean attack rate in the laboratory (17.6 eggs) and greenhouse (20.1 eggs). The difference in prey density between the laboratory and field seems to have been a major contributing factor in determining the rate of predation, whereas differences in environmental conditions (e.g., temperature and possible alternate food) may explain the differences observed in the predation rate in the greenhouse and field.  相似文献

Parasitism ofLygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) eggs by three species ofMymaridae, Anaphes iole Girault,Erythmelus miridiphagus Dozier andPolynema pratensiphagum Walley and one species ofScelionidae, Telenomus sp., was investigated at Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Québec. The maximum level of field parasitism ofL. lineolaris eggs by individual species was 15.4, 53.8, 70.0 and 16,7%, respectively. Parasitoids were retrieved from eggs ofL. lineolaris inserted in stems and branches ofAmaranthus retroflexus L.,Chenopodium album L.,Coronilla varia L.,Rumex obtusifolius L. andSolanum tuberosum L. Amaranthus retroflexus andS. tuberosum sustained a large population ofL. lineolaris and egg parasitism was high enough to consider it as a potential control factor.   相似文献

Delia radicum (L. 1758) is a major pest of cabbage crops in northern Europe. Due to more constraining laws relating to insecticide use, new strategies to control this pest are urgently needed. Manipulating insect behavior through infochemicals is a promising approach. The recent identification of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) as a compound that both attracts the main predators of D. radicum and inhibits oviposition by the fly gives a challenging opportunity to develop such strategy. The aim of the present study was to confirm such potential of DMDS, in the field. Through the 8 weeks of the first egg laying peak of the fly we assessed, the potential of artificially increasing the levels of this molecule in the close vicinity of broccoli plants to 1/attract predators, 2/stimulate predatory activity and 3/limit damage done by the fly. Despite a lower number of D. radicum eggs as food resource, DMDS effectively increased predator catches in treated plots (119 Aleochara bilineata (Gyllenhal, 1810) caught in treated plot, while only 21 in control plots). However, damages done by the fly were of the same magnitude order in treated plots than in control ones. Number of D. radicum larvae and pupae recovered in plant roots were similar, despite the important decrease in eggs laid. This result, together with the observation that the numbers of eggs predated in artificial patches were lowered in the presence of the molecule, seems to indicate that increasing DMDS amounts disturbed the foraging activity of the fly predators. Consequences of these findings for the future of DMDS use in crop protection against D. radicum are discussed.  相似文献

We examined the effect of prey (Tetranychus urticae) egg density on leaving rate of the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis, from leaf disks using predators with different feeding experiences and levels of external volatile cues related to their prey. Predators stayed longer on disks with prey eggs than on those without prey eggs. However, at each prey egg density predators stayed longer in the absence of prey-related volatiles from an external source. Starved predators stayed longer in a prey patch than those that had not experienced starvation. At each prey density, starved P. persimilis consumed a greater proportion of prey eggs than satiated predators. The total prey consumption of starved predators appears to be related to their longer residence time on source disks compared to satiated predators and also the per capita consumption rate was greater for starved predators compared to satiated predators.  相似文献

Egg size variation often has large effects on the fitness of progeny in insects. However, many studies have been unable to detect an advantage of developing from large eggs, suggesting that egg size variation has implications for offspring performance only under adverse conditions, such as during larval competition, periods of starvation, desiccation, or when larvae feed on low-quality resources. We test this hypothesis by examining the consequences of egg size variation for survivorship and development of a seed-feeding insect, Stator limbatus, on both a low-quality (Cercidium floridum) and a high-quality (Acacia greggii) host plant. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis. S. limbatus larval performance was affected by egg size only when developing on the poor-quality host (C. floridum); larvae from large eggs survived better on C. floridum than those from small eggs, while there was no evidence of an effect of egg size on progeny development time, body weight, or survivorship when larvae developed on A. greggii. These results indicate intense selection for large eggs within C. floridum-associated populations, but not in A. greggii-associated populations, so that egg size is predicted to vary among populations associated with different hosts. Our results also support this hypothesis; females from a C. floridum-associated population (Scottsdale) laid larger eggs than females from an A. greggii-associated population (Black Canyon City).  相似文献

Field andlaboratory studies on predation of rice leaffolder eggs (i.e., Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée) and Marasmia patnalis Bradley) were conducted to identify major predator species. Direct observations of predation on field-exposed eggs showed that in two seasons Metioche vittaticollis (Stål) and Anaxipha longipennis (Serville) were the major predators of leaffolder eggs. Together these crickets took the largest part of all eggs consumed during observation (92%) and had the highest ratio of visits with predation to their total observed visits to plants with leaffolder eggs. Furthermore, the activity pattern of the crickets matched best the daily pattern of egg disappearance, and the seasonal trends in their observed visits correlated best with the seasonal trends in egg disappearance. Minor predators feeding on field-exposed rice leaffolder eggs were Ophionea nigrofasciata Schmidt-Goebel, Micraspis sp., and Conocephalus longipennis (de Haan). The latter species was the most commonly observed egg predator, but had a negligible share in the total predation. In petri dish tests the consumption of leaffolder eggs by the predatory crickets M. vittaticollis and A. longipennis was far greater than that of four other predators. Female cricket adults consumed at least 80 eggs per day, and all individuals accepted leaffolder eggs as food. According to daily egg consumption and acceptance rates, the predators ranked as follows: M. vittaticollis, A. longipennis > Micraspis sp. > O. nigrofasciata > Paederus fuscipes Curtis, C. longipennis. Predator ranking according to the ratio of visits with predation to total visits in the field was identical to the ranking based on the egg consumption tests. Due to their large predation potential, predatory crickets will probably play an important role in leaffolder egg predation, even when their densities are low compared to those of other predator species.  相似文献

The effect of various feeding intervals on reproduction and longevity of the predatory bugPodisus sagitta (Fabricius) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was studied in the laboratory. Isolated pairs of adult bugs were given moisture in excess and were fed 1 seventh-instar larva of the greater wax moth,Galleria mellonella (L.), with a mean weight of 90 mg every 1, 3, 7, 14 and 21 days. Reproduction ofP. sagitta reflected well the feeding intervals. Females fed at increasing time intervals reduced reproductive outputs by decreasing oviposition frequency and size of egg batches. Predators fed every 21 days produced a mean of only 1.0 egg per day in comparison with 9.9 eggs per day for females fed daily. Longevity of females fed daily was 110.7 days; females fed less frequently tended to live longer, with a maximum mean longevity of 217.5 days for females fed every 14 days. No cannibalism among adults was observed, but females were occasionally seen to feed on their own eggs. Availability of moisture was found to be essential for the predators to survive during periods of low food supplies. These findings are discussed in relation to the predator's adaptation strategies in conditions of prey scarcity.   相似文献

The biology of the earwig,Doru taeniatum (Dohrn), a reported predator ofSpodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), was studied in the laboratory.D. taeniatum under laboratory conditions was easily reared, mated readily and females tended eggs and first instar nymphs.D. taeniatum developed through 4 nymphal instars and reached imago in approximately 30 days. It is an omnivore in the laboratory and capable of developing and reproduction on plant pollen alone, and on Lepidoptera eggs (Sitotroga carealella) (Olivier) alone. Immatures developed most rapidly and females were most fecund when fed either a combination ofS. cereallea eggs and pollen, orS. cerealella eggs alone. Predator foraging behaviour affects the outcome of enemy–enemy interactions. Using a combination of fieldwork and laboratory experiments, we show that intraguild predation may be important in the field distribution of generalist predators that share a common prey: the eggs (and larvae) of the leaf beetle Phratora vulgatissima, a major insect pest in coppicing willow plantations. We focused on a species from the hoverfly genus Parasyrphus (Syrphidae), which may exhibit large temporal and spatial variation in density. Predator and prey densities were quantified in 40 field plots in willow plantations. The likelihood of finding hoverfly eggs declined with increasing densities of two predatory mirids, Orthotylus marginalis and Closterotomus fulvomaculatus, which exhibit less mobile behaviour similar to that of hoverfly larvae. The density of a more mobile predatory bug species, the anthocorid Anthocoris nemorum, was not associated with hoverfly occurrence. These results corroborate the hypothesis that less mobile predators should be stronger intraguild predators than mobilepredators. Further partial support for this hypothesis was obtained in the laboratory study where individual predators were presented with clutches of P. vulgatissima eggs containing one hoverfly egg: the less mobile C. fulvomaculatus and O. marginalis tended to consume the hoverfly egg more readily than the more mobile A. nemorum. However, most individuals of all three bug species consumed the egg of the potential competitor – the syrphid – within 24 h. The field study also showed that hoverfly occurrence was positively associated with the density of their prey and with the presence of nearby forests. We conclude that intraguild predation, abundance of prey and the surrounding habitat affect the distribution of hoverflies in this system and should be considered when developing biological control methods.  相似文献

A strain ofFusarium solani sensu Snyder & Hansen invaded the eggs of the insectPanstrongylus geniculatus in a vivarium. None of the invaded eggs hatched. To establish experimentally the pathogenicity of thisFusarium species against the eggs ofP. geniculatus, the fungus and the eggs were incubated together under different relative humidities and temperatures. At 64% relative humidity and 26 °C, the fungus grew well colonizing and penetrating all of the chorions.Three embryos died and were also colonized byF. solani. Only 4 nymphs hatched and survived to day 20. It is concluded that the isolate ofF. solani was capable of colonizing and invading the chorion of the eggs under certain humidity and temperature conditions and cause the death of the embryos.  相似文献

Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was reared on eggs ofRiptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Heteroptera: Alydidae) at various temperatures under long-day (L16:D8) or short-day (L10:D14) conditions. There was no diapause during egg, larval or pupal stages under any set of conditions examined. However, at 15°C under short-day conditions, vitellogenesis was arrested in all adult females and they entered diapause. At 15°C under long-day conditions, or at 20°C under short-day conditions, some adult females entered diapause. Under the latter set of conditions, the adult females laid eggs but they laid fewer eggs than under long-day conditions, Even at 25°C, under short-day conditions, adult females laid fewer eggs than under long-day conditions, and this low rate of oviposition was attributed to the retarded development of ovaries. Diapause adults reared at 15°C were more resistant to low temperature than nondiapause adults reared at 25°C.  相似文献

A series of laboratory and field studies were done to evaluate a range of leguminous plant species for their feeding potential by adult weevils of the genusSitona Germar. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Three species ofSitona, S. lineatus L.,S. flavescens Marsh. andS. hispidulus F. all of which are found commonly on white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in the UK were offered a range of 11 legume species,T. repens (white clover, cv. Olwen),T. pratense L. (red clover, cv. Marcom),T. fragiferum L. (strawberry clover, cv. Palestine),T. hybridum L. (hybrid clover, cv. Tetra),T. incarnatum L (crimson clover),T. dubium Sibth. (lesser yellow trefoil),Lotus corniculatus L. (birdsfoot-trefoil, cv. Leo),L. uliginosus Schkuhr. (large birdsfoot-trefoil),Melilotus alba Desr. (white melilot),Medicago sativa L. (lucerne, cv. Europe) andM. lupulina L. (black medick) in two laboratory experiments. The weevils were offered a choice of these legumes in one experiment whilst in the other they did not have a choice of food material. These legumes were also sown in the field and a number of measurements of damage, together with counts ofSitona spp., were made. In the laboratoryS. lineatus andS. hispidulus favoured some of the legumes to a greater or lesser extent than white clover.S. flavescens was more restricted in its feeding than the other two weevil species. In the field studyS. lineatus invaded the experimental area quickly and tended to favourMedicago spp. andMelilotus spp. Later in the yearS. flavescens dominated the sitona fauna on the experiment, with the exception of aggregations ofS. lineatus onM. sativa andM. alba. In a separate screen of 5 varieties of white clover (cvs Donna, Menna, Kersey, Olwen and Grasslands Huia), cv. Olwen appeared to be the most susceptible to sitona attack.  相似文献

Short-term effects on consumption and oviposition rates of four strainsof Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) after a diet shiftwere evaluated. The new feeding conditions experienced by the predators weresixfixed densities of eggs or protonymphs of Tetranychusurticae Koch placed on excised strawberry leaflet discs andmaintained under laboratory conditions (25±1°C,75–85% RH, 16L: 8D). The observations were made on the first and thefifthday of the experiment. The phytoseiids came from three long-term mass-rearedstrains fed on T. urticae, Dermatophagoides farinaeHughes,or Quercus spp. pollen, respectively. The fourth strainwascollected directly in a strawberry field. Time since diet transfer can be addedto the factors (i.e. feeding history and prey density) already known to affectthe functional and numerical responses of N. californicus, both when it feeds on prey eggs and protonymphs. If consumption rates wereaveraged over all strains and densities, 9.04 and 11.41 eggs, and 6.97 and 6.48protonymphs were consumed on the first and the fifth day, respectively. If thesame was done for oviposition rates, predators feeding on eggs produced 1.46and2.36 eggs/female/day, whereas predators feeding on protonymphs produced 1.35and2.29 eggs/female/day. Time had the greatest impact on the functional responseofthe strain that had previously fed on tetranychids, while an effect of time onthe numerical response was detectable in all strains.  相似文献

In spring and summer, two groups of natural enemies are successfully used for biological control of western flower thrips,Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) in greenhouses: phytoseiid mites (Amblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) and, to a lesser extent,A. barkeri (Hughes)) and anthocorid bugs (Orius spp.). During winter, however, these predators often fail to control the pest. One likely cause for failure is the predators' tendency to enter diapause under short day conditions. In addition, eggs of predatory mites are generally susceptible to low humidity conditions, which often arise in greenhouses when outside temperatures drop below zero, or at bright, hot days in summer. In search for a thrips predator that is not hampered by these conditions, five subtropical phytoseiid species were selected which were known to feed on thrips:A. hibisci (Chant),A. degenerans Berlese,A. limonicus s.s. Garman and McGregor,A. scutalis (Athias-Henriot) andA. tularensis (Congdon). These species were compared toA. cucumeris andA. barkeri, with respect to the following features: (1) predation and oviposition rate with youngF. occidentalis larvae as prey, (2) oviposition rate on a diet of sweet pepper pollen, (3) drought tolerance spectrum of eggs, and (4) incidence of reproductive diapause under short day conditions. The results showed thatA. limonicus exhibited the highest predation and oviposition rates on a diet of thrips larvae. Moreover,A. limonicus females showed total absence of diapause under the conditions tested. A major disadvantage of this species was, however, that its eggs were most sensitive to low air humidity conditions. Least sensitive to low air humidity were eggs ofA. degenerans andA. hibisci. Females ofA. degenerans andA. hibisci also showed total absence of diapause, and intermediate rates of predation and oviposition, on both thrips larvae and pollen. In conclusion, we argue thatA. degenerans andA. hibisci are the most promising candidates for biological control ofF. occidentalis under conditions of low humidity and short day length. The success of these candidates remains to be shown in greenhouse experiments.  相似文献

The efficiency of S. mansoni miracidia in locating and infecting Biomphalaria pfeifferi in Gezira canals has been studied under field conditions. When S. mansoni eggs were introduced into clean stagnant water in small field channels, the miracidia hatched to infect 100% of 30 snails in cages at the release point. Fifteen metres upstream and downstream 13% of caged snails were infected but no infections were found in snails 20 m away. When eggs were released into the same canal in flowing water (8.3 cm · s–1), no infections were detected in any of the caged snails placed 0–100 m downstream. Releasing hatched miracidia instead of eggs resulted in infections in all cages at 5 m intervals from 0-100 m. The release of eggs into flowing water was likened to the method by which S. haematobium eggs are deposited during urination. The 0% infection suggests that eggs will be swept away from the point of contamination by the flow. Thus only urination into stagnant water will lead to heavy snail infection rates. When eggs were released into a small pond-like minor canal tail end snail infection rates were only 3%. This was probably due to the larger water volume, smaller number of caged snails, and the presence of vegetation and other fauna which may be decoys or predators. The results highlight how very high snail infection rates can be produced under ideal conditions but also show how large snail and miracidia numbers are required in natural situations.  相似文献

Egg size was measured at different rates of egg laying in three polyphagous carabid species, known to be useful predators of cereal aphids; the small Bembidion lampros Herbst and the medium-sized Pterostichus cupreus L. and P. melanarius Illiger. Variations in fecundity, as well as the ability of the medium-sized species to also build up fat reserves, were obtained when beetles were subjected to different dietary regimes consisting of aphids, or foods with a lower or higher protein content. Egg size was found to be dependent on the rate of egg laying within a species. A diet of cereal aphids appeared to be adequate for egg production in these polyphagous carabids, but female P. cupreus were unable to build up fat reserves when they ingested aphids contaminated with the aphicide pirimicarb. Beetles were able to devote resources to more and larger eggs (B. lampros), or to larger eggs and/or fat reserves (P. melanarius/P. cupreus) when given access to a carbohydrate-rich food with low protein content. The highest rate of egg laying was obtained when female P. cupreus and P. melanarius were given a more varied diet at frequent intervals; including regular shifts between unsprayed aphids, carbohydrate-rich food and protein-rich maggots. Within the varied diet treatment a negative relationship was obtained between egg size and egg number among similar-sized individuals of P. cupreus and P. melanarius; females producing the largest number also laid the smallest eggs. Egg size affected larval survival, since first instars hatching from large eggs were found to survive longer than those hatching from small eggs. The influence of differences in food intake on reproduction, maintenance metabolism, and survival of fieldinhabiting carabids is discussed.  相似文献

We assessed the reproductive responses of adult female Iphiseius degenerans and Neoseiulus teke to increasing density of three stages of their prey, Mononychellus tanajoa, on cassava leaf discs under laboratory conditions. The oviposition rates increased with number of prey consumed per predator per day with a maximum of approximately two eggs per day for I. degenerans and four eggs per day for N. teke. The oviposition rate of N. teke was higher when consuming eggs than other prey stages. Neoseiulus teke was more efficient than I. degenerans in converting consumed prey into egg production. The data were adequately described by simple mathematical models.  相似文献

The egg parasitoid,Platytelenomus busseolae (Gahan) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) was recorded from egg masses of the corn stalk borer,Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefebvre) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on maize in the area of Istiaea, Central Greece. Natural parasitism was studied during the years 1986, 1987. A total of 3,382 egg masses, containing 205,227 eggs, was collected from corn fields. Parasitized eggs were found from end July to mid-October. In 1986. 76.2% of the egg masses and 42.8% of all eggs were parasitized, while in 1987, respective values were 27.6% and 12.9%. The inferior performance of the parasitoid in 1987 may be due to the unfavorable winter and summer conditions. Parasitism decreased when the host population was at its peak, but it increased again within 1 to 3 weeks. A small percentage of egg masses was completely parasitized (9.5% and 4.7% for the 2 years respectively). In 1987, the sex ratio, ♀♀/♂♂ was 1.5: 1 and 26.2% of the egg masses produced only ♂♂. Mated ♀♀ produced 3 times more ♀♀ than ♂♂. It seems that the parasitoid, under favorable weather conditions, can play a significant role in the control of the corn stalk borer.   相似文献
