Summary Increasing body density by increasing bone density has been cited as a means by which semiaquatic mammals are able to control their buoyancy in water. In order to investigate the relationship of bone density to buoyancy and the degree of morphological adaptation to a semiaquatic existence, we examined limb-bone densities in a single mammalian family. Among genera within the Mustelidae, i.e., weasels and their relatives, there is an apparent trend toward increasing limb-bone density associated with a gradation from a terrestrial to an aquatic way of life. However, the association of increasing bone density with increasing adaptation to an aquatic environment is tempered by the realization that increasing body size may also influence bone density in larger, terrestrial mammals. These results are in accordance with previous data on bone density in other mammalian orders and suggest that a new hypothesis which encompasses historical, physiological, and behavioral information would be best suited to explaining differences in this morphological relationship.  相似文献

Ecological niches of organisms vary across geographical space, but niche shift patterns between regions and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. We studied shifts in the pH niche of 42 temperate forest plant species across a latitudinal gradient from northern France to boreo‐nemoral Sweden. We asked 1) whether species restrict their niches with increasing latitude as they reach their northern range margin (environmental constraints); 2) whether species expand their niches with increasing latitude as regional plant species richness decreases (competitive release); and 3) whether species shift their niche position toward more acidic sites with increasing latitude as the relative proportion of acidic soils increases (local adaptation). Based on 1458 vegetation plots and corresponding soil pH values, we modelled species response curves using Huisman–Olff–Fresco models. Four niche measures (width, position, left and right border) were compared among regions by randomization tests. We found that with increasing latitude, neutrophilic species tended to retreat from acidic sites, indicating that these species retreat to more favorable sites when approaching their range margin. Alternatively, these species might benefit from enhanced nitrogen deposition on formerly nutrient‐poor, acidic sites in southern regions or lag behind in post‐glacial recolonization of potential habitats in northern regions. Most acidophilic species extended their niche toward more base‐rich sites with increasing latitude, indicating competitive release from neutrophilic species. Alternatively, acidophilic species might benefit from optimal climatic conditions in the north where some have their core distribution area. Shifts in the niche position suggested that local adaptation is of minor importance. We conclude that shifts in the pH niche of temperate forest plants are the rule, but the directions of the niche shifts and possible explanations vary. Our study demonstrates that differentiating between acidophilic and neutrophilic species is crucial to identify general patterns and underlying mechanisms.  相似文献

Plants can respond to environmental impacts by variation in functional traits, thereby increasing their performance relative to neighbors. We hypothesized that trait adjustment should also occur in response to influences of the biotic environment, in particular different plant diversity of the community. We used 12 legume species as a model and assessed their variation in morphological, physiological, life-history and performance traits in experimental grasslands of different plant species (1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 60) and functional group (1–4) numbers. Mean trait values and their variation in response to plant diversity varied among legume species and from trait to trait. The tall-growing Onobrychis viciifolia showed little trait variation in response to increasing plant diversity, whereas the species with shorter statures responded in apparently adaptive ways. The formation of longer shoots with elongated internodes, increased biomass allocation to supporting tissue at the cost of leaf mass, reduced branching, higher specific leaf areas and lower foliar δ13C values indicated increasing efforts for light acquisition in more diverse communities. Although leaf nitrogen concentrations and shoot biomass:nitrogen ratios were not affected by increasing plant diversity, foliar δ15N values of most legumes decreased and the application of the 15N natural abundance method suggested that they became more reliant on symbiotic N2 fixation. Some species formed fewer inflorescences and delayed flowering with increasing community diversity. The observed variation in functional traits generally indicated strategies of legumes to optimize light and nutrient capturing, but they were largely species-dependent and only partly attributable to increasing canopy height and community biomass with increasing plant diversity. Thus, the analysis of individual plant species and their adjustment to growth conditions in communities of increasing plant diversity is essential to get a deeper insight into the mechanisms behind biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships.  相似文献

How reproductive isolation is related to divergent natural selection is a central question in speciation. Here, we focus on several ecologically specialized taxa or 'call types' of red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra complex), one of the few groups of birds providing much evidence for ecological speciation. Call types differ in bill sizes and feeding capabilities, and also differ in vocalizations, such that contact calls provide information on crossbill phenotype. We found that two call types of red crossbills were more likely to approach playbacks of their own call type than those of heterotypics, and that their propensity to approach heterotypics decreased with increasing divergence in bill size. Although call similarity also decreased with increasing divergence in bill size, comparisons of responses to familiar versus unfamiliar call types indicate that the decrease in the propensity to approach heterotypics with increasing divergence in bill size was a learned response, and not a by-product of calls diverging pleiotropically as bill size diverged. Because crossbills choose mates while in flocks, assortative flocking could lead indirectly to assortative mating as a by-product. These patterns of association therefore provide a mechanism by which increasing divergent selection can lead to increasing reproductive isolation.  相似文献

Microorganisms produce a variety of surface-active agents (or surfactants). These can be divided into low-molecular-weight molecules that lower surface and interfacial tensions efficiently and high-molecular-weight polymers that bind tightly to surfaces. These surfactants, produced by a wide variety of microorganisms, have very different chemical structures and surface properties. It is therefore reasonable to assume that different groups of biosurfactants have different natural roles in the growth of the producing microorganisms. Moreover, as their chemical structures and surface properties are so different, each emulsifier probably provides advantages in a particular ecological niche. Several bioemulsifiers have antibacterial or antifungal activities. Other bioemulsifiers enhance the growth of bacteria on hydrophobic water-insoluble substrates by increasing their bioavailability, presumably by increasing their surface area, desorbing them from surfaces and increasing their apparent solubility. Bioemulsifiers also play an important role in regulating the attachment–detachment of microorganisms to and from surfaces. In addition, emulsifiers are involved in bacterial pathogenesis, quorum sensing and biofilm formation. Recent experiments indicate that a high-molecular-weight bioemulsifier that coats the bacterial surface can be transferred horizontally to other bacteria, thereby changing their surface properties and interactions with the environment.  相似文献

Species introductions can alter local food-web structure by changing the vertical or horizontal diversity within communities, largely driven by their body size distributions. Increasing vertical and horizontal diversities is predicted to have opposing effects on stability. However, their interactive effects remain largely overlooked. We investigated the independent and collective effects of vertical and horizontal diversities on food-web stability in alpine lakes stocked with variable body size distributions of introduced fish species. Introduced predators destabilize food-webs by increasing vertical diversity through food chain lengthening. Alternatively, increasing horizontal diversity results in more stable food-web topologies. A non-linear interaction between vertical and horizontal diversities suggests that increasing vertical diversity is most destabilizing when horizontal diversity is low. Our findings suggest that the size structure of introduced predators drives their impacts on stability by modifying the structure of food-webs, and highlights the interactive effects of vertical and horizontal diversities on stability.  相似文献

Mild proteolytic treatment of SW1116 tumor cells with trypsin or plasmin increases their plasmin-binding ability considerably by increasing the number of binding sites without altering their affinity. This mechanism may be operative for increasing the concentration of active plasmin at the surface of tumor cells. C-terminal lysine residues are involved in plasmin binding to cells, since treatment of cells with carboxypeptidase B decreases this binding by 50%.  相似文献

The testosterone of men in industrial societies peaks in their twenties and tends to decline with increasing age. Apart from this individual-level decline, there have been reports of a secular (age-independent population-level) decline in testosterone among American and Scandinavian men during the past few decades, possibly an indication of declining male reproductive health. It has been suggested that both declines in testosterone (individual-level and population-level) are due to increasing male obesity because men in industrial society tend to add body fat as they age, and overall rates of obesity are increasing. Using an unusually large and lengthy longitudinal dataset (991 US Air Force veterans examined in six cycles over 20 years), we investigate the relationship of obesity to individual and population-level declines in testosterone. Over twenty years of study, longitudinal decline in mean testosterone was at least twice what would be expected from cross-sectional estimates of the aging decline. Men who put on weight intensified their testosterone decline, some greatly so, but even among those who held their weight constant or lost weight during the study, mean testosterone declined 117 ng/dl (19%) over 20 years. We have not identified the reason for secular decline in testosterone, but we exclude increasing obesity as a sufficient or primary explanation, and we deny the supposition that men who avoid excessive weight will maintain their youthful levels of testosterone.  相似文献

Menidia beryllina (Cope) is an annual species that inhabits coastal estuaries along the east coast of the United States from Cape Cod to the Gulf of Mexico. In Rhode Island, USA, its peak spawning time and the duration of the spawning vary among years and estuaries. However, the onset of gonadal maturation is more consistent (early May), suggesting that it may be regulated by more consistent cues than those regulating spawning. To determine the effects of photoperiod and temperature on the regulation of the onset of maturation two laboratory experiments were conducted and the results compared to field observations. In the first experiment, fish collected from the field in February were exposed to each of four treatments: increasing photoperiod/increasing temperature; increasing photoperiod/low temperature; low photoperiod/increasing temperature; and low photoperiod/low temperature. Only fish exposed to both increasing photoperiod and increasing temperature were able to complete maturation. Fish exposed to low photoperiod and increasing temperature responded by enlarging their livers, a response that was also observed in field fish collected in the fall. Fish exposed to the remaining two treatments neither matured their gonads nor enlarged their livers. In the second experiment fish collected from the field in early March were exposed to three treatments with different photoperiod regimes (daylight constant at 9.5 h, increasing up to 12 h, or increasing up to 15 h) and one increasing temperature regime. Fish in the 9.5-h treatment initiated maturation but were not able to complete the process, those exposed to the 12-h photoperiod matured and spawned for a short period of time before the gonads began to regress, and those exposed to the 15-h photoperiod matured and spawned large numbers of eggs throughout the remainder of the experiment. The 9.5- and 12-h photoperiod exposures also resulted in accumulation of reserves in the liver in both females and males. The 15-h photoperiod treatment resulted in liver enlargement in females, which were undergoing vitellogenesis, but not in males. Males exposed to the 9.5- and 12-h photoperiod accumulated significantly more visceral fat than those exposed to the 15-h photoperiod. In females, the amount of visceral fat accumulated was inversely proportional to the hours of light. These findings suggest that this species has evolved mechanisms that enable it to anticipate the coming of winter as well as the coming of suitable breeding conditions and ensure that it exhibits the appropriate response at the appropriate time (reserve accumulation for the winter or gonad maturation in the spring).  相似文献

本文对镍处理下高冰草幼苗生长,茎部和根部丙二醛(MDA)含量,可溶性蛋白含量,超氧化物岐化酶(SOD)、过氧化物酶(POD)和过氧化氢酶(CAT)活性及叶片光合色素含量的变化进行了研究.结果表明,低浓度镍(10 μmol·L~(-1))对高冰草幼苗生长无显著抑制效应,但随镍浓度增加各项生长指标显著减少,且镍对高冰草幼苗根部损伤更为显著.光合色素含量随镍浓度升高呈减少趋势.高冰草茎部和根部MDA含量与镍浓度呈显著正相关关系.根部可溶性蛋白含量随镍浓度升高呈增加趋势.低浓度镍处理(10 μmol·L~(-1))下,SOD、POD和CAT活性均有所提高,保护酶系统处于正常状态,但随镍浓度升高,3种保护酶活性受到不同程度抑制,保护酶系统平衡被破坏.
Abstract:
Agropyron elongatum seedlings were exposed to different concentration Ni to study their growth and the changes in MDA and soluble protein contents and SOD, POD and CAT ac-tivities in their shoots and roots, and the photosynthetic pigment content in their leaves. Low con-centration (10 μmol·L~(-1)) Ni had no significant inhibitory effects on the seedlings growth, but the growth indices decreased significantly with increasing Ni concentration, being more markedly for roots than for shoots. The leaf photosynthetic pigment content had a decreasing trend with in-creasing Ni concentration, while the MDA content in shoots and roots had significant positive cor-relation with Ni concentration. The soluble protein content in roots increased with increasing Ni concentration. Under low concentration (10μmol·L~(-1)) Ni, the SOD, POD and CAT activities all increased, and the protective enzyme system was well-balanced. When the Ni concentration was increasing, the three enzyme activities were inhibited to different extents, and the balance of protective enzyme system was broken.  相似文献

The abundant herbivorous mud-snail Hydrobia ulvae is an ecosystem engineer in soft-bottom intertidal habitats due to its grazing and bioturbation activity. However, mud snails are commonly infected by trematodes that reduce their overall activity, which in turn may affect their impact on the surrounding benthic community. To test this hypothesis, we performed field experiments manipulating both the abundance of uninfected snails (0, 7500 and 15.000 ind. m- 2) and the level of snail parasitism (0, 33 and 100% trematode prevalence) on a Danish mud-flat. The results showed that increasing snail abundance and parasitism generally had opposite effects on the community of microphytobenthos and zoobenthos. Increasing snail density increased the chlorophyll-a concentration in the substrate (enhancement), whereas increasing parasitism decreased it. In accordance, the benthic primary producers were generally less nutrient limited at high snail density and mostly so at high levels of snail parasitism. Moreover, epipsammic diatoms were favoured over epipelic diatoms at increasing snail density, whereas the opposite was evident at increasing snail parasitism. At the community level, increasing snail density increased evenness among epipelic diatoms, whereas increasing snail parasitism decreased evenness and species diversity. Probably through the action of trophic cascades and varying levels of disturbance, the zoobenthic community was influenced by experimental treatments as well. The indirect effects of snail parasitism influenced significantly the abundance of more faunal species (seven) than did snail density (two). At the community level, increasing snail density decreased evenness and lowest species richness coincided with intermediate snail density. In contrast, increasing snail parasitism resulted in increasing evenness and peaking species richness at intermediate level of parasitism. Together, the results show that parasites solely through their impact on the behaviour of a single community member can be significant indirect determinants of community organisation and function.  相似文献

Three cytokinins and their ribosides were tested in conjunction with brassinosteroid (BR) for their effects on ethylene production in etiolated mung bean ( Vigna radiata L. Rwilcz cv. Berken) hypocotyl segments. When varying concentrations of BR were tried in combination with a fixed amount of kinetin (10 μ M ), there was an increase in ethylene production with increasing concentrations of BR up to 3 μ M , and a decline beyond. A stimulation in ethylene production was observed with increasing concentrations of each of the cytokinins used. However, when applied in conjunction with 3 μ M BR, all cytokinin concentrations produced similar stimulatory patterns. When 3 μ M BR or 10 μ M 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) was applied in conjunction with increasing concentrations of IAA, there was a stimulation in ethylene production with increasing concentrations of IAA. However, 3 μ M BR and 10 μ M BAP together with varying concentrations of IAA failed to alter the level of ethylene production.  相似文献

We compared non-shivering thermogenesis between two adjacent populations of the common spiny mouse Acomys cahirinus from different habitats, in relation to increasing salinity. Individuals were captured from the north- and south-facing slopes of the same valley, that represent "Mediterranean" and "desert" habitats, respectively. We hypothesized that the two populations of mice would differ in their thermoregulatory capacities, reflecting their need to cope with the environmental stress in each habitat. We measured resting metabolic rate by recording oxygen consumption, body temperature and response to an injection of exogenous noradrenaline. Mice were maintained on diets with increasing levels of salt intake to examine their abilities to cope with increasing osmotic stress. Mice from north-facing slopes generally had a higher resting metabolic rate and a higher increase in oxygen consumption in response to noradrenaline than mice from south-facing slopes. Increasing salinity decreased resting metabolic rate values, body temperature, and oxygen consumption in response to noradrenaline in both populations, and diminished slope-dependant differences. We suggest that these differences could be a result of an ongoing adaptive process to different climatic conditions, typical of the Mediterranean region, that are a demonstrable example of evolution in action.  相似文献

Biologically generated structures create habitat and influence the distribution and abundance of species in many marine systems. In the rather monotonous and nutrient-poor environment of the deep-sea, cold seep environments and their associated chemosynthetic communities offer islands of primary production and habitat to a generally sparsely distributed macrofauna. In this study, we investigate the structure of macrofaunal assemblages associated with vestimentiferan aggregations on the upper Louisiana slope of the Gulf of Mexico and the relationships between assemblage composition and the size and complexity of the vestimentiferan-generated habitat. Using custom-designed and custom-built devices, we collected seven whole vestimentiferan aggregations along with their associated fauna during the summers of 1997 and 1998. Sixty-five species were found associated with the four vestimentiferan aggregations collected in 1998, more than doubling the number of species previously reported for seeps in this region. Individual aggregations contained between 23 and 44 different non-vestimentiferan species. General trends of increasing species richness with increasing habitat size and increasing faunal density with increasing habitat complexity were identified, but substantial variability suggested other factors also control the composition of faunal associates. Faunal abundances decreased with increasing aggregation age. Seep endemics dominated the communities of younger aggregations, but non-endemic species dominated communities of older aggregations. Relative dominance of the heterotrophic community by primary consumers decreased, while predatory secondary and higher-order consumers increased with increasing aggregation age. These trends are discussed in terms of successional changes in aggregation structure, habitat heterogeneity and environmental conditions.  相似文献

The Ambrosia species represent one of the most problematic groups of invasive weeds around the world. The ease with which they are introduced and spread in new countries, their generalist ecological requirements, and functional traits facilitate their invasion and subsequent naturalization in new areas. All of these aspects contribute to increasing their global social and economic impact, which is mostly related to pollen allergy. Here we analyze available scientific publications about Ambrosia artemisiifolia, A. psilostachya, A. tenuifolia, and A. trifida, with the aim of defining the current level of knowledge and summarizing important data that are currently scattered throughout the literature. Specifically, we analyzed the following: (1) their current global distribution and current stage of invasion; (2) traits and requirements promoting their introduction, reproductive success, and adaptation to climate and environment in the nonnative range; as well as (3) current knowledge about allergens and elements increasing their impact.  相似文献

Acclimation to one environmental factor may constrain acclimation to another. Synechococcus elongatus (sp. PCC7942), growing under continuous light in high inorganic carbon (Ci; approximately 4 mm) and low-Ci (approximately 0.02 mm) media, achieve similar photosynthetic and growth rates under continuous low or high light. During acclimation from low to high light, however, high-Ci cells exploit the light increase by accelerating their growth rate, while low-Ci cells maintain the prelight shift growth rate for many hours, despite increased photosynthesis under the higher light. Under increased light, high-Ci cells reorganize their photosynthetic apparatus by shrinking the PSII pool and increasing Rubisco pool size, thus decreasing the photosynthetic source-to-sink ratio. Low-Ci cells also decrease their reductant source-to-sink ratio to a similar level as the high-Ci cells, but do so only by increasing their Rubisco pool. Low-Ci cells thus invest more photosynthetic reductant into maintaining their larger photosystem pool and increasing their Rubisco pool at the expense of population growth than do high-Ci cells. In nature, light varies widely over minutes to hours and is ultimately limited by daylength. Photosynthetic acclimation in S. elongatus occurs in both high and low Ci, but low-Ci cells require more time to achieve acclimation. Cells that can tolerate low Ci do so at the expense of slower photosynthetic acclimation. Such differences in rates of acclimation relative to rates of change in environmental parameters are important for predicting community productivity under variable environments.  相似文献

研究不同深度土壤碳(C)、氮(N)、磷(P)含量及其化学计量比对气候因子(年降水量(MAP)和年平均气温(MAT))的响应差异,对于理解气候变化如何影响生态系统功能具有重要意义。通过对蒙古高原干旱半干旱草地44个样点的野外调查,探讨了不同深度(0–20、20–40、40–60、60–80 cm)土壤C、N、P含量及其化学计量比与MAP和MAT的关系。主要结果:(1)随土壤深度的增加,土壤C和N含量逐渐减少,土壤P含量不变;土壤C:P和N:P逐渐降低,土壤C:N相对稳定。(2)土壤C、N、P含量以及土壤C:P、N:P与MAP显著正相关,与MAT显著负相关,土壤C:N与MAP显著负相关,与MAT无相关性;随着土壤深度的增加,土壤C、N、P含量及其化学计量比与气候因子的相关性均逐渐减弱。(3) MAP和MAT对不同深度土壤C、N、P含量和化学计量比的影响存在显著差异;随着土壤深度的增加, MAP和MAT对土壤C、N、P含量及其化学计量特征变化的总解释度逐渐减少。该研究表明气候因子对土壤元素化学计量特征具有自上而下的调控作用,蒙古高原草地土壤表层C、N、P含量及其化学计量比与MAP和MAT的关...  相似文献

Traditional interpretations of the evolution of animal societies have suggested that their structure is a consequence of attempts by individuals to maximize their inclusive fitness within constraints imposed by their social and physical environments. In contrast, some recent re-interpretations have argued that many aspects of social organization should be interpreted as group-level adaptations maintained by selection operating between groups or populations. Here, I review our current understanding of the evolution of mammalian societies, focusing, in particular, on the evolution of reproductive strategies in societies where one dominant female monopolizes reproduction in each group and her offspring are reared by other group members. Recent studies of the life histories of females in these species show that dispersing females often have little chance of establishing new breeding groups and so are likely to maximize their inclusive fitness by helping related dominants to rear their offspring. As in eusocial insects, increasing group size can lead to a progressive divergence in the selection pressures operating on breeders and helpers and to increasing specialization in their behaviour and life histories. As yet, there is little need to invoke group-level adaptations in order to account for the behaviour of individuals or the structure of mammalian groups.  相似文献
