Sterile and fertile shoots of a microphyllous vascular plant are described from the Lower Devonian Posongchong Formation (? upper Siegenian), Yunnan Province, southern China and placed in the new taxon Halleophyton zhichangense gen. et sp. nov. The sterile axes are characterized by conspicuous, contiguous swollen rhomboidal to hexagonal leaf bases and relatively broad spatulate laminae. The relief of the leaf bases is not so pronounced in the fertile areas, which bear numerous cauline sporangia with two equal valves. In vegetative characters the new fossils, although smaller and more fragmentary, resemble Drepanophycus gaspianus but in the absence of information on the fertile parts of the latter and because of the controversy surrounding the concept of the genus Drepanophycus, we decided to erect a new genus. Its relationship to the lycophytes sensu stricto is equivocal as exact details of the relationship of sporangium with leaf and sporangium vascularization remain unknown.  相似文献

Structural colors are generated by scattering of light by variations in tissue nanostructure. They are widespread among animals and have been studied most extensively in butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera), which exhibit the widest diversity of photonic nanostructures, resultant colors, and visual effects of any extant organism. The evolution of structural coloration in lepidopterans, however, is poorly understood. Existing hypotheses based on phylogenetic and/or structural data are controversial and do not incorporate data from fossils. Here we report the first example of structurally colored scales in fossil lepidopterans; specimens are from the 47-million-year-old Messel oil shale (Germany). The preserved colors are generated by a multilayer reflector comprised of a stack of perforated laminae in the scale lumen; differently colored scales differ in their ultrastructure. The original colors were altered during fossilization but are reconstructed based upon preserved ultrastructural detail. The dorsal surface of the forewings was a yellow-green color that probably served as a dual-purpose defensive signal, i.e. aposematic during feeding and cryptic at rest. This visual signal was enhanced by suppression of iridescence (change in hue with viewing angle) achieved via two separate optical mechanisms: extensive perforation, and concave distortion, of the multilayer reflector. The fossils provide the first evidence, to our knowledge, for the function of structural color in fossils and demonstrate the feasibility of reconstructing color in non-metallic lepidopteran fossils. Plastic scale developmental processes and complex optical mechanisms for interspecific signaling had clearly evolved in lepidopterans by the mid-Eocene.  相似文献

Modern marine stromatolites in the Exuma Cays,Bahamas: Uncommonly common   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Modern stromatolites in open marine environments, unknown until recently, are common throughout the Exuma Cays, Bahamas. They occur in three distinct settings: subtidal tidal passes, subtidal sandy embayments and intertidal beaches. These stromatolites have a relief of up to 2.5 m and occur in water depths ranging from intertidal to 10 m. Surfaces near the sediment-water interface are typically colonized by cyanobacterial mats, whereas high relief surfaces are commonly colonized by algal turf and other macroalgae such asBatophora, Acetabularia, andSargassum. The internal structure of the stromatolites is characterized by millimeter-scale lamination defined by differential lithification of agglutinated sediment. In thin section, the lithified laminae appear as micritic horizons with distinct microstructures: they consist of thin micritic crusts (20–40 μm thick) overlying layers of micritized sediment grains (200–1000 μm thick); the micritized grains are cemented at point-contacts and are trucated along a surface of intense microboring. The Exuma stromatolites are built by cyanobacterial-dominated communities. These laminated prokaryotic structures grade to unlayered thrombolites built by eukaryotic algae. The variety of sites, settings and shapes of stromatolites in the Exuma Cays present excellent opportunities for future studies of stromatolite morphogenesis.  相似文献

Morphologically complex trace fossils, recording the infaunal activities of bilaterian animals, are common in Phanerozoic successions but rare in the Ediacaran fossil record. Here, we describe a trace fossil assemblage from the lower Dunfee Member of the Deep Spring Formation at Mount Dunfee (Nevada, USA), over 500 m below the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary. Although millimetric in scale and largely not fabric‐disruptive, the Dunfee assemblage includes complex and sediment‐penetrative trace fossil morphologies that are characteristic of Cambrian deposits. The Dunfee assemblage records one of the oldest documented instances of sediment‐penetrative infaunalization, corroborating previous molecular, ichnologic, and paleoecological data suggesting that crown‐group bilaterians and bilaterian‐style ecologies were present in late Ediacaran shallow marine ecosystems. Moreover, Dunfee trace fossils co‐occur with classic upper Ediacaran tubular body fossils in multiple horizons, indicating that Ediacaran infauna and epifauna coexisted and likely formed stable ecosystems.  相似文献

Simulated swards of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) growing in 1-m3 soil blocks in the glasshouse were either well watered or deprived of water for 57 d and then rewatered. The first aim was to measure effects of drought on sugar (water-soluble carbohydrate) composition of laminae and sheaths of mature laminae, and bases and laminae of young (growing) leaves. The second aim was to use pulse labelling with 14CO2 to follow the partitioning of recently-fixed assimilates, and the assembly and consumption of reserve sugars (fructans). Over the last 7 d of drought growth almost stopped, old leaves died faster than they were replaced, and total sugar (which had doubled in concentration during drought) was rapidly consumed. Leaf laminae had lower content of total sugars and of large fructan (DP>5) than did growing bases and sheaths. Drought greatly reduced the rate at which sugar was exported from the laminae to the sheaths and growing leaf bases, and the rate at which it was converted to fructan. Nevertheless, fructan accumulated over the first 50 d of drought. Rewatering did not result in depolymerization and remobilization of sugars that had been formed during the last 7 d of drought, but stimulated their further assembly into high-DP fructans. Our hypothesis, that accumulation of neo-kestose (a DP-3 fructan) in droughted laminae was a symptom of sugar remobilization just before death, was disproved. It is concluded that sugar reserves contribute to drought resistance only under extreme conditions. The specific role of fructan in dry environments might be to improve regrowth when drought is relieved, rather than to enhance growth during drought.  相似文献

Early to Late Silurian (Llandovery‐Ludlow) body and trace fossils from the Heceta Formation of southeastern Alaska are preserved in the oldest widespread carbonates in the Alexander terrane. These fossils represent the earliest benthos to inhabit diverse shallow and deep subtidal environments in the region and are important indicators of early stages in benthic community development within the evolving Alexander arc. The ichnofossils are particularly significant because they add to a small but growing body of knowledge about trace fossils in deep‐water carbonates of Paleozoic age.

Carbonate turbidites that originated along a deep marine slope within the arc yield a low‐diversity suite of trace fossils consisting of five distinct biogenic forms. Simple burrows (Planolites, two forms), ramifying tunnels (Chondrites), and tiny cylindrical burrows (?Chondrites) represent the feeding activities (fodinichnia) of pre‐turbidite animals that burrowed in the lime mud before the influx of coarser sediment deposited by turbidity currents. These trace fossils are associated locally with cross‐cutting burrows created as domichnia (Palaeophycus). Rarer hypichnial burrows and endichnial traces were created by post‐turbidite animals that fed soon after the deposition of coarse detritus from turbidity flows.

Trace fossils in these deposits reflect much lower diversity levels than in Paleozoic siliciclastic turbidites. This difference may represent unfavorable environmental conditions for infaunas, differential preservation, or significant paleogeographic isolation of the Alexander terrane during the Silurian. Greater utilization of trace fossils in terrane analysis may help to resolve this issue and provide new data for reconstructing the paleogeography of circum‐Pacific terranes.  相似文献

Populations of Polybessurus bipartitus Fairchild ex Green et al., a large morphologically distinctive microfossil, occur in silicified carbonates of the Upper Proterozoic (700-800 Ma) Limestone-Dolomite "Series," central East Greenland. Large populations of well-preserved individuals permit reconstruction of P. bipartitus as a coccoidal unicell that "jetted" upward from the sediment by the highly unidirectional secretion of extracellular mucopolysaccharide envelopes. Reproduction by baeocyte formation is inferred on the basis of clustered envelope stalks produced by small cells. Sedimentological evidence indicates that P. bipartitus formed surficial crusts locally within a shallow peritidal carbonate platform. Among living microorganisms a close morphological, reproductive, and behavioral counterpart to Polybessurus is provided by populations of an as yet underscribed cyanobacterium found in coastal Bahamian environments similar to those in which the Proterozoic fossils occur. In general morphology and "jetting" behavior, this population resembles species of the genus Cyanostylon, Geitler (1925), but reproduces via baeocyte formation. Polybessurus is but one of the more than two dozen taxa in the richly fossiliferous biota of the Limestone-Dolomite "Series." This distinctive population, along with co-occurring filamentous cyanobacteria and other microfossils, contributes to an increasingly refined picture of ecological heterogeneity in late Proterozoic oceans.  相似文献

Anatomically preserved Woodwardia virginica (Blechnaceae) and a newly recognized onocleoid fern are described from the middle Miocene Yakima Canyon flora of central Washington State, USA. Identification of the W. virginica fossils is based on a combination of vegetative pinnules, rhizome and stipe anatomy, and fertile pinnules with indusiate sori and sporangia like those of extant W. virginica. Fronds are isomorphic. Vegetative pinnae are elongated and pinnatifid, with a secondary vein paralleling the midvein. Secondary veins of the pinnule lobe anastomose to form primary areoles and are either simple or dichotomize toward the margin. Rhizomes have a simple dictyostele with 3-5 cauline vascular bundles and often a sclerotic hypodermis. Leaf traces contain two large adaxial vascular bundles that occur laterally and adaxially, flanking an arc of 4-6 smaller bundles. Fertile pinnules have linear sori that are somewhat embedded in the laminae and are enclosed by a thin indusium. Leptosporangia display a vertical annulus and an elongated stalk. A second fern, Wessiea yakimaensis gen. et sp. nov., is represented by anatomically preserved branching rhizomes and attached frond bases that conform to the Onoclea-type pattern of rhizome and frond-base vasculature. Rhizomes have a simple dictyostele of 4-5 cauline meristeles. Leaf divergence is helical, with paired hippocampiform rachial traces. These two ferns occur in the same matrix with specimens of Osmunda wehrii. They demonstrate that filicalean fern assemblages similar to those of extant temperate floras were well established in western North America by the middle Miocene and further emphasize the exceptional species longevity of some homosporous pteridophytes.

Heinberg C.: The internal structure of the trace fossils Gyrochorte and Curvolithus .
An extremely mica-rich sandstone from the Lower Cretaceous of Milne Land, East Greenland has yielded new data on the internal construction of certain trace fossils. The sediment contains the following forms: Gyrochorte, Curvolithus, Siphonites, Planolites , and small endichnia. Mica orientation within Curvolithus and Gyrochorte permits a detailed analysis of the manner in which the animals burrowed in order to produce the characteristic back-fill structures. Weiss' interpretation of Gyrochorte as the burrow of a worm which progressed obliquely through the sediment, is supported on the basis of the internal structure.  相似文献

Fossil melanin granules (melanosomes) are an important resource for inferring the evolutionary history of colour and its functions in animals. The taphonomy of melanin and melanosomes, however, is incompletely understood. In particular, the chemical processes responsible for melanosome preservation have not been investigated. As a result, the origins of sulfur‐bearing compounds in fossil melanosomes are difficult to resolve. This has implications for interpretations of original colour in fossils based on potential sulfur‐rich phaeomelanosomes. Here we use pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py‐GCMS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) to assess the mode of preservation of fossil microstructures, confirmed as melanosomes based on the presence of melanin, preserved in frogs from the Late Miocene Libros biota (NE Spain). Our results reveal a high abundance of organosulfur compounds and non‐sulfurized fatty acid methyl esters in both the fossil tissues and host sediment; chemical signatures in the fossil tissues are inconsistent with preservation of phaeomelanin. Our results reflect preservation via the diagenetic incorporation of sulfur, i.e. sulfurization (natural vulcanization), and other polymerization processes. Organosulfur compounds and/or elevated concentrations of sulfur have been reported from melanosomes preserved in various invertebrate and vertebrate fossils and depositional settings, suggesting that preservation through sulfurization is likely to be widespread. Future studies of sulfur‐rich fossil melanosomes require that the geochemistry of the host sediment is tested for evidence of sulfurization in order to constrain interpretations of potential phaeomelanosomes and thus of original integumentary colour in fossils.  相似文献

Two ‘stromatolites’ from Carboniferous and Triassic carbonates previously regarded as microbial bioconstructions are analysed and reinterpreted as sponge‐microbial build‐ups. The automicritic aggregations in these build‐ups are similar to the previously reported fossils of keratose demosponges in showing moulded anastomosing filamentous structures. All the studied columnar or domal constructions were formed in turbulent water with high sedimentation rate. The Carboniferous build‐ups were constructed in the shallow subtidal zone of an open shelf or a ramp. The laminations within the stromatolite‐like columns are composed of alternating dark micritic laminae of sponge fossils and pale laminae of neomorphic microspars. The accretion of these columns is probably related to the repeated cycles of sponge growth, rapid lithification after burial, re‐exposure and erosion, and settlement of new generations. The Triassic rocks are presumed to have been precipitated in a slightly evaporitic environment based on lithological features. They show a transition from planar laminae, which were formed under the influence of microbial mats, to stromatolitic columnar or domal build‐ups, which are dominated by stacked micritic clumps of probable sponge fossils. The sponge–microbe alternation may have been controlled by variation of salinity. Comparable with a recent study, this work shows that sponge‐related bioconstructions can be morphologically similar to microbialites in the level of mega‐ and mesostructures.  相似文献

The secondary layer of organophosphatic-shelled brachiopods consists of stratiform laminae in glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), pervaded by canals with chitinous walls. The laminae are composed of various aggregates of protein-coated granules of apatite, 4–8 nm in size, 10 or so soluble proteins, β-chitinous meshes and sheets, and a possibly proteinaceous actin-like network. The succession is disposed in rhythmic sets grading between predominantly apatitic and wholly membranous laminae. The most conspicuous set consists of apatitic rods (baculi) in trellised arrays associated with laminae of compacted mosaics and spherules of apatite. The baculi are composed of mosaics accreting around axial fibrous proteins; apatitic aggregates are also scattered throughout the GAGs and accrete on proteinaceous networks and chitinous meshes. Baculi, subtended between two compact laminae, first appeared in Early Cambrian times and are a synapomorphy of lingulides. Subsequently, the secretion of one or another of the compact laminae was suppressed in the two surviving clades, with sets of the lingulid Glottidia and the discinids, respectively, grading inwardly from, and to, compact laminae. Suppression of baculate secretion also occurred in the dorsal valve of living Discinisca while, in Lingula, baculi have been replaced by botryoidal aggregates of mosaics at least since Carboniferous times.  相似文献

Cell walls of tips and bases of laminae of flag leaves from 11 cultivars of winter wheat of varying susceptibility to Puccinia striiforntis yellow rust) were compared by examining their phenolic components released by treatment with a commercial cellulase. Isolated cell walls of both susceptible and resistant cultivars released water-soluble carbohydrate esters of phenolic acids, the major acid detected being trans-ferulic. There was no relationship between the amount of phenolic esters released by cellulase and susceptibility to yellow rust. The leaf lamina tips, which were much more susceptible to yellow rust than the corresponding bases, had lower cell wall contents than the bases and their walls were more degradable by cellulase. Examination of transverse sections of leaf laminae of cv. Little Joss showed that cells whose walls contained phenolic groups that gave a red colour reaction with p-nitrobenzene diazonium tetrafluoroborate, occupied a larger area of leaf lamina bases than of the tips. A greater percentage of the abaxial epidermal cells of the bases, compared with the tips, had walls that gave this red colour reaction. We suggest that the presence of phenolic groups in these walls may be related to the greater resistance of the bases to P. striiforntis.  相似文献

Sub-fossil stromatolites (5000-3000 years old) occur on the marginal flat surrounding Marion Lake (South Australia). A micrite/microsparite crystal fabric characterises these fine-grained, well-laminated stromatolites, which lack trapped grains. The internal lamination is characterised by a sub-millimetric alternation of porous and dense laminae. The microfabric of the laminae is ubiquitously composed of a fine (10-20 μm) peloidal texture, with many thinner aphanitic layers. Aggregates of very fine, low-Mg calcite and aragonite constitute both peloidal and aphanitic micrite, which is coated, respectively, by spherulitic and fringing acicular microspar. Micrite, with a high organic matter content, is formed of coalescing nanospheres grading into small polyhedrons, probably composed mainly of aragonite, with less calcite enriched in Mg, Sr, Na and S. Bacteria-like microfossils and relics of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) occur abundantly within this micritic framework. The former consist of empty moulds and mineralised bodies of coccoid forms, whereas EPS relics consist of sheet-like or filamentous structures that appear both mineralised and more often still preserved as a C-enriched dehydrated substance that represents the main organic matter component of the deposit. Acicular crystals, which show a prismatic elongate shape, are composed of Mg-depleted aragonite that lacks fossils or organic relicts. Degrading EPS and micro-organisms appear gradually to be replaced and entombed by the nanospherical precipitates, implying the existence of processes of organo-mineralisation within an original syn-sedimentary microbial community. Succeeding micron-scale crystals merge to form isolated or connected micritic aggregates (the peloids), followed by the gradual formation of the acicular crystals as purely inorganic precipitates.  相似文献

Hitherto undescribed strata containing well-preserved fish occur at the base of the Tortonian, Upper Coralline Limestone Formation at Il Fawwara, Malta. The major elements of the fish fauna are Bregmaceros albyi, Syngnathus sp.a sciaenid and indeterminate members of the Percoidei. Collectively these fish are considered to represent part of a shallow marine assemblage tolerant to both sedimentation and salinity fluctuations.Detailed work on the associated fossils and sediments leads to the conclusion that this bed accumulated during a brief interval when shallow water sediments and biota were intermittently carried into a small shelf depression by a succession of density flows. Evidence is presented to suggest that these flows were set in motion by periodic storm activity affecting shallow water areas adjacent to a carbonate coastline of low relief.  相似文献

Pieces excised from leaf bases and laminae of seedlings of Triticum aestivum L. cv. Lennox were slowly frozen, using a specially designed apparatus, to temperatures between 2° and 14° C. These treatments ranged from non-damaging to damaging, based on ion-leakage tests to be found in the accompanying report (Pearce and Willison 1985, Planta 163, 304–316). The frozen tissue pieces were then freeze-fixed by rapidly cooling them, via melting Freon, to liquid-nitrogen temperature. The tissue was subsequently prepared for electron microscopy by freeze-etching. Ice crystals formed during slow freezing would tend to be much larger than those formed during subsequent freeze-fixation. Ice crystals surrounding the excised tissues were much larger in the frozen than in the control tissues (the latter rapidly freeze-fixed from room temperature). Large ice crystals were present between cells of frozen laminae and absent from controls. Intercellular spaces were infrequent in control leaf bases and no ice-filled intercellular spaces were found in frozen leaf bases. Intracellular ice crystals were smaller in frozen tissues than in controls. It is concluded that all ice formation before freeze-fixation was extracellular. This extracellular ice was either only extra-tissue (leaf bases), or extra-tissue and intercellular (laminae). Periplasmic ice was sometimes present, in control as well as slowly frozen tissues, and the crystals were always small; thus they were probably formed during freeze-fixation rather than during slow freezing. The plasma membrane sometimes showed imprints of cell-wall microfibrils. These were less abundant in leaf bases at 8° C than in controls, and were present on only a minority of plasma membranes from laminae. Therefore, extracellular ice probably did not compress the cells substantially, and changes in cell size and shape were possibly primarily a result of freezing-induced dehydration. Fine-scale distortions (wrinkles) in the plasma membrane, while absent from controls, were present, although only rarely, in both damaged and non-damaged tissues; they were therefore ice-induced but not directly related to the process of damage.  相似文献

Terrestrial and marine invertebrate organisms both leave records of their activities in the sediment in the form of trace fossils, at least during certain stages of their ontogeny. In contrast, trace fossils produced by vertebrate organisms are scarce, although terrestrial trace fossils provide exclusive insights into the social behaviour of their producers. In the marine realm, vertebrate trace fossils are relatively rare, difficult to identify and problematic to interpret. However, in certain settings, observations on serendipitously preserved and exposed trace fossils can shed light on the predatory behaviour of marine vertebrates. In Miocene outer shelf to nearshore sandstones of the Taliao Formation in NE Taiwan, large numbers of bowl‐shaped trace fossils can be observed. Morphology and size range (diameter typically 10–30 cm, average depth around 10 cm) of these trace fossils agree well with feeding traces of modern stingrays, and the trace fossil Piscichnus waitemata, which has been attributed to bottom feeding rays. Stingrays direct a jet of water from their mouths to excavate a bowl‐shaped pit to expose their prey. In the material filling the excavated bowl, broken pieces of two other common trace fossils, Ophiomorpha and Schaubcylindrichnus, are often found, and in a number of cases, vertical shafts of Ophiomorpha surrounded by dispersed pieces of wall material have been observed. In contrast, surrounding sediment rarely contains this kind of broken pieces of wall material. These observations clearly indicate that stingrays specifically targeted the producers of the trace fossils: thalassinoid crustaceans and worms, respectively. The targeted predation of these relatively deep burrowers furthermore suggests that the rays used their electroreceptive organs to locate the prey; as such, direct targeting of buried prey only based on olfactory senses has been shown to be ineffective in experiments with extant myliobatiform rays.  相似文献

Abstract:  A new Late Cretaceous titanosaur sauropod from the Bauru Basin of Brazil, Uberabatitan ribeiroi gen. et sp. nov., represented by at least three specimens, is described. The material comes from a level of coarse sandstone within the Serra da Galga sequence in Uberaba County, Minas Gerais State. The fossiliferous strata belong to the Marília Formation (Serra da Galga Member), Bauru Group, considered to be Maastrichtian in age. The fossils occur in the uppermost levels of the above-mentioned unit; thus, Uberabatitan ribeiroi is the youngest titanosaur to have been recorded from the Bauru Basin. The autapomorphies that support the new species are: (1) anterior and mid-cervicals with postzygodiapophyseal lamina (podl) segmented in zygapophyseal and diapophyseal laminae, of which the first extends rostrodorsally over the second; (2) mid-dorsals with a robust lateral lamina formed mainly by a diapophyseal lamina (probably homologous to the postzygodiapophyseal lamina), and, to a lesser extent, by a relic of the spinodiapophyseal lamina (spdl); (3) mid (and probably posterior) dorsals with accessory neural laminae, which are lateral to the prespinal lamina, and probably homologous to the spinoprezygapophyseal laminae (sprl); (4) mid-caudal centra with deeply excavated lateral faces; (5) pubis very thick and robust, with a very stout longitudinal crest on its external (ventral) face; and (6) proximal end of the tibia with a prominent lateral protuberance, which articulates with an equally prominent medial knob of the fibula. The titanosaurian assemblage at Uberaba includes, apart from U. ribeiroi , well-preserved specimens assigned to species of uncertain affinities ( Trigonosaurus pricei and Baurutitan britoi ), as well as a few vertebrae assigned to aeolosaurines.  相似文献

Environmental factors controlling the distribution of shallow-water gorgonians of Puerto Rico were inferred from a Reciprocal Averaging ordination analysis. The data set included several samples taken before and after the passage of Hurricane David and the mass mortality of the sea urchin Diadema antillarum. We could infer only a single environmental gradient associated with the distribution of gorgonians. Stations at opposite extremes of this gradient were characterized by combinations of high wave action with low topographic relief, or low wave action with high topographic relief. This gradient was also associated with sediment transport across the bottom (bedload). A detailed examination of ordination results in relation to Hurricane David and the Diadema mortality indicated that sediment transport, rather than water movement and topographic relief, is more directly related to the distribution of shallow-water gorgonians.  相似文献
