The marine tubificid oligochaete fauna of Belize is the most diverse that has been described for the Caribbean Sea, with records for over 50% of all known Caribbean species. Tubificids were sampled at 77 stations around the outer barrier of the coral reefs off the Belize mainland. A total of 1,529 individuals representing 52 species were collected. Species distribution patterns were controlled mainly by sediment type and the presence or absence of mangroves. Six species (Phallodrilus molestus, Tubificoides bermudae, Inanidrilus leukodermatus, Heterodrilus flexuosus, Bathydrilus formosus, Smithsonidrilus hummelincki) with diverse life history characteristics were common and had broad habitat preferences being found in various types of heterogeneous sandy sediments. Heterodrilus flexuosus was the only common species in these samples known only in Belize. The other five common species range from Belize to Florida or Bermuda. Most other species have narrower habitat preferences and are limited to specific habitats. For example, one group of gutless species was restricted to organically enriched fine to medium sands, a group of Limnodriloidinae occurred only in mud around mangrove cays, and a group of meiofaunal species were restricted to saline groundwater.  相似文献

Some excavating sponges of the genus Cliona compete with live reef corals, often killing and bioeroding entire colonies. Important aspects affecting distribution of these species, such as dispersal capability and population structure, remain largely unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine levels of genetic connectivity and dispersal of Cliona delitrix across the Greater Caribbean (Caribbean Sea, Bahamas and Florida), to understand current patterns and possible future trends in their distribution and effects on coral reefs. Using ten species‐specific microsatellite markers, we found high levels of genetic differentiation between six genetically distinct populations: one in the Atlantic (Florida‐Bahamas), one specific to Florida and four in the South Caribbean Sea. In Florida, two independent breeding populations are likely separated by depth. Gene flow and ecological dispersal occur among other populations in the Florida reef tract, and between some Florida locations and the Bahamas. Similarly, gene flow occurs between populations in the South Caribbean Sea, but appears restricted between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic (Florida‐Bahamas). Dispersal of C. delitrix was farther than expected for a marine sponge and favoured in areas where currents are strong enough to transport sponge eggs or larvae over longer distances. Our results support the influence of ocean current patterns on genetic connectivity, and constitute a baseline to monitor future C. delitrix trends under climate change.  相似文献

Distributed in tropical and warm-temperate waters worldwide, Lobophora species are found across the Greater Caribbean (i.e., Caribbean sensu stricto, Gulf of Mexico, Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda). We presently discuss the diversity, ecology, biogeography, and evolution of the Greater Caribbean Lobophora species based on previous studies and an extensive number of samples collected across the eastern, southern, and to a lesser extent western Caribbean. A total of 18 Lobophora species are now documented from the Greater Caribbean, of which five are newly described (L. agardhii sp. nov., L. dickiei sp. nov., L. lamourouxii sp. nov., L. richardii sp. nov., and L. setchellii sp. nov.). Within the Greater Caribbean, the eastern Caribbean and the Central Province are the most diverse ecoregion and province (16 spp.), respectively. Observed distribution patterns indicate that Lobophora species from the Greater Caribbean have climate affinities (i.e., warm-temperate vs. tropical affinities). In total, 11 Lobophora species exclusively occur in the Greater Caribbean; six are present in the western Atlantic; two in the Indo-Pacific; and one in the eastern Pacific. Biogeographic analyses support that no speciation occurred across the Isthmus of Panama, and that the Greater Caribbean acted as a recipient region for species from the Indo-Pacific and as a region of diversification as well as a donor region to the North-eastern Atlantic. The Greater Caribbean is not an evolutionary dead end for Lobophora, but instead generates and exports diversity. Present results illustrate how sampling based on DNA identification is reshaping biogeographic patterns, as we know them.  相似文献

Aim Lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) are popular ornamental fishes native to the Indo‐Pacific that were introduced into Florida waters and are rapidly spreading and establishing throughout the Western Atlantic (WA). Although unfortunate, this invasion provides an excellent system in which to test hypotheses on conservation biology and marine biogeography. The goals of this study are: (1) to document the geographical extent of P. volitans and P. miles; (2) to determine whether the progression of the lionfish invasion is the result of expansion following the initial introduction event or the consequence of multiple introductions at various WA locations; and (3) to analyse the chronology of the invasion in conjunction with the genetic data in order to provide real‐time assessments of hypotheses of marine biogeography. Location The Greater Caribbean, including the US east coast, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Caribbean Sea. Methods Mitochondrial control region sequences were obtained from lionfish individuals collected from Bermuda and three Caribbean locations and analysed in conjunction with previously published data from five native and two non‐native locations (US east coast and the Bahamas; a total of six WA locations). Genetic variation within and among groups was quantified, and population structure inferred via spatial analyses of molecular variance, pairwise ΦST, exact tests, Mantel tests and haplotype networks. Results Mitochondrial DNA screening of WA lionfish shows that while P. miles is restricted to the northernmost locations (Bermuda and the US east coast), P. volitans is ubiquitous and much more abundant. Invasive populations of P. miles and P. volitans have significantly lower levels of genetic diversity relative to their native counterparts, confirming that their introduction resulted in a strong founder effect. Despite the relative genetic homogeneity across the six WA locations, population structure analyses of P. volitans indicate significant differentiation between the northern (US east coast, the Bahamas and Bermuda) and the Caribbean populations. Main conclusions Our findings suggest that the ubiquity of WA lionfish is the result of dispersal from a single source of introduction in Florida and not of multiple independent introductions across the range. In addition, the progression of the lionfish invasion (as documented from sightings), integrated with the genetic evidence, provides support for five of six major scenarios of connectivity and phylogeographical breaks previously inferred for Caribbean organisms.  相似文献

The ultrastructure and distribution of receptor cells near the mouth and (where present) the pharynx of Hofstenia miamia, Proporus bermudensis, Conaperta thela, and Convoluta convoluta (Acoela) were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy of specimens stained with a fluorescence marker for actin. Five types of monociliary receptors were identified: (1) non‐collared receptors with a single long and narrow ciliary rootlet; (2) non‐collared receptors with a wide main ciliary rootlet and a smaller posterior rootlet; (3) non‐collared receptors with a single wide and hollow ciliary rootlet with a granulated core; (4) Collar (?) receptors with obliquely radial filament bundles in the cell apex and with a single hollow ciliary rootlet composed of numerous strand‐like elements; and (5) Collar receptors lacking a striated rootlet but with a granular body (swallow's nest rootlet). While H. miamia bears the first two receptor types, P. bermudensis has receptors of type 1, 3 and 5, and Cona. thela and Conv. convoluta have receptors of type 3, 4 and 5. The density of receptors is generally highest at the anterior body tip, regardless of where the mouth is located. Most receptor types occur scattered over the whole body but type 2 receptors of H. miamia are restricted to the pharynx and mouth region. The lack of a common receptor type specific for the mouth and pharynx of the investigated species points to an independent origin of the pharynges in Hofsteniidae and in Proporidae and of the mouth tube in Convolutidae. Moreover, the homology of the so‐called collar receptors in Acoela with typical collar receptors in other invertebrates is questioned.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variation in the fish community structure were studied in a tropical non-estuarine embayment in Chwaka Bay, Zanzibar (Tanzania). Fish samples were collected bi-monthly (at each spring low tide) for 1 year (November 2001–October 2002) from a range of bay habitats ranging from mangroves deep inside the bay to seagrass beds close to the mouth of the bay. Additionally, environmental variables were examined to determine their relationship with the fish community structure. Being a non-estuarine embayment, the environmental variables as well as the fish community structure in each habitat remained relatively constant for most part of the year; however, a marked decline was observed during the rainy period (April–May). Significant variations in fish community variables (density, biomass and species richness) and in water temperature and salinity were observed during the rainy season in all habitats, with larger changes in the mangrove and mud/sand flats habitats than in the seagrass beds. Seasonal variations in water clarity and dissolved oxygen were not significant, though. Many species disappeared from the mangrove and mud/sand flats habitats during the rainy season and those which persisted showed a remarkable decrease in density. Moreover, the results indicate that mangroves were the preferred settling habitats for Gerres filamentosus, Gerres oyena, Lethrinus lentjan and Monodactylus argenteus, especially during the dry period (December–February) before the rainy season. This observation is contrary to what has been reported from some other tropical regions where greater abundance and species richness was observed during the rainy season. A significant relationship was found between density of fish and temperature, salinity and turbidity. Since salinity was the most conspicuously changing environmental variable with seasons, we propose that salinity, alone or in combination with low visibility and temperature, was probably the most important environmental factor structuring the fish assemblage in the mangrove and mud/sand flats habitats, particularly during the rainy season. Sponge species may present several morphotypes, but sponges that are morphologically similar can be separate species. We investigated morphological variation in Mycale laevis, a common Caribbean reef sponge. Four morphotypes of M. laevis have been observed (1) orange, semi-cryptic, (2) orange, massive, (3) white, semi-cryptic, and (4) white, massive. Samples of M. laevis were collected from Key Largo, Florida, the Bahamas Islands, and Bocas del Toro, Panama. Fragments of the 18S and 28S rRNA ribosomal genes were sequenced and subjected to phylogentic analyses together with sequences obtained for 11 other Mycale species and additional sequences retrieved from GenBank. Phylogenetic analyses confirmed that the genus Mycale is monophyletic within the Order Poecilosclerida, although the subgenus Aegogropila is polyphyletic and the subgenus Mycale is paraphyletic. All 4 morphotypes formed a monophyletic group within Mycale, and no genetic differences were observed among them. Spicule lengths did not differ among the 4 morphotypes, but the dominant megasclere in samples collected from Florida and the Bahamas was the strongyle, while those from Panama had subtylostyles. Our data suggest that the 4 morphotypes constitute a single species, but further studies would be necessary to determine whether skeletal variability is due to phentotypic or genotypic plasticity.  相似文献

This article describes the relationship between 10 selected properties of the sediments (chlorophyll a and b, colloidal and total carbohydrate, water concentration, sediment type, organic matter, erosion threshold and erosion rate) and meio- and macrofauna within and among three different habitats in an urbanized intertidal mudflat/mangrove forest in Tambourine Bay, Sydney Harbour, Australia. Many of the biogeochemical variables were significantly different among habitats, often grading from mudflat to mangrove canopy. In contrast to previous studies, patterns of distribution of macrofauna among habitats were weak. For the meiofauna, only copepods showed any significant difference among habitats, with the greatest numbers in the open mudflat habitat and least under the mangrove canopy. There was a gradient in fauna among the habitats; overall macrofauna abundances were greatest under the mangrove canopy and least on the mudflat, while meiofauna abundance was greatest in the pneumatophore habitat and least under the canopy. Correlations between fauna and properties of sediment were generally weak. When the habitats were analysed separately, some correlations were strengthened but relationships were inconsistent. Thus, while some taxa vary significantly among habitats there was not a strong relationship between biogeochemical properties and either macro- or meiofauna. This suggests that localised factors other than the measured properties of the sediments are driving patterns in fauna at these small scales, which requires further investigation to be unravelled.  相似文献

Aim To infer phylogenetic relationships among five species of the cave‐adapted shrimp genus Typhlatya in order to test competing hypotheses of dispersal and colonization of the disjunct cave localities occupied by these five species. Location Typhlatya species are found in caves and anchialine ponds across the northern margin of the Caribbean Sea, along the Mediterranean and Adriatic coasts and on oceanic islands in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific oceans. This study focuses on five species, one from Bermuda, one from the Caicos Islands and three from the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Methods Partial sequences (c. 1400 bp) from the mitochondrial cytochrome b, 16S rDNA and COI genes were obtained from representative samples of the five species. Phylogenetic inference was carried out with maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses. Parsimony networks were constructed for the Bermudian species Typhlatya iliffei and one Yucatan species Typhlatya mitchelli, to determine the degree of connectivity among populations inhabiting different cave systems. Results All three land masses were recovered as monophyletic. The two insular marine species from Bermuda and the Caicos Islands formed a clade, while the three continental freshwater species from the Yucatan Peninsula formed another. Within both Bermuda and the Yucatan, shared haplotypes were found in different cave systems, suggesting recent or ongoing gene flow among populations in both locales. Main conclusions The two insular marine Typhlatya species originated from an ancestral marine population, possibly already cave‐adapted, that is suggested to have colonized the Caicos Islands and subsequently dispersed to Bermuda via the Gulf Stream. Divergence estimates suggest that colonization occurred before the formation of present‐day anchialine cave habitat, which did not form on either island until the late Pliocene to early Pleistocene. Divergence estimates also indicate that the Yucatan freshwater species split before the formation of freshwater cave habitat in the Yucatan. These species could have inhabited crevicular marine habitats before the late Pliocene/early Pleistocene in the Yucatan or elsewhere in the Caribbean, and subsequently migrated to freshwater caves once they formed.  相似文献

Spurilla neapolitana (Delle Chiaje, 1823) was considered to be a species with a broad geographic range and substantial colour variability; however, analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear gene data revealed that it is a complex of five distinct species. Further anatomical and morphological examinations determined that coloration is one of the main diagnostic traits for all five species, although some display substantial colour pattern variation. As a result of this study, S. neapolitana is determined to be restricted to the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic. Spurilla sargassicola Bergh, 1871 from the Caribbean is redescribed and confirmed as a valid species. The name Spurilla braziliana MacFarland, 1909 is retained for western Atlantic and Pacific populations. Two new species are described herein. S purilla onubensis sp. nov. occurs in Europe, with a range overlapping that of S. neapolitana. Aim Understanding the patterns and processes underlying phenotype in a polytypic species provides key insights into microevolutionary mechanisms of diversification. The red‐eyed treefrog, Agalychnis callidryas, exhibits strong regional differentiation in colour pattern, corresponding to five admixed mitochondrial DNA clades. We evaluated spatial diversity patterns across multiple, putative barriers to examine the fine‐scale processes that mediate phenotypic divergence between some regions while maintaining homogeneity between others. Location We examined patterns of phenotypic diversification among 17 sites that span five putative biogeographic barriers in lower Central America (Costa Rica and Panama). Methods We tested the extent to which genetic distance (FST) derived from six multilocus nuclear genotypes covaried with measures of phenotypic distance (leg coloration) within and between biogeographic regions. We used linear regression analyses to determine the role of geographic and genetic factors in structuring spatial patterns of phenotypic diversity. Results The factors that best explained patterns of phenotypic diversity varied among biogeographic regions. We identified one geographic barrier that impeded gene exchange and resulted in concordant phenotypic divergence across the Continental Divide, isolating Caribbean and Pacific populations. Across Caribbean Costa Rican populations, one barrier structured phenotypic but not genetic diversity patterns, indicating a role for selection. In other regions, the putative barriers had no determining effect on either genetic or leg colour structure. Main conclusions The processes mediating the distribution and diversification of colour pattern in this polytypic, wide‐ranging treefrog varied among biogeographic regions. Spatially varying selection combined with the isolating effects of geographic factors probably resulted in the patchy distribution of colour diversity across Costa Rican and Panamanian populations.  相似文献

Mangroves has been described for the whole Caribbean are in their different habitats. The island of Dominica (West Indies) has always been excluded from the distribution area due to supposed inadequated conditions for mangrove growth. However, there are small areas with proper edaphic conditions for mangal in which black mangrove (Avicennia germinans L.) and white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa L.) has been found. Even the occurrence of an additional Avicennia species is under discussion.  相似文献

Hermit‐crab transported shells of the West Indian top shell Cittarium pica occur in numerous terrestrial fossil deposits on Bermuda, which is the most remote outpost of this Caribbean species. Cittarium is so far known only from deposits of interglacial ages corresponding to marine isotope stages (MIS) 11, 9, 5e, and 1 (Holocene). In at least the cases of MIS 11 and 5e, Cittarium appears at the very beginning of the interglacial. The species is definitely absent from well‐stratified cave deposits of the last glacial (MIS 4–2). It is hypothesized that colder sea‐surface temperatures (SSTs) during glacial periods caused Cittarium to be extirpated on Bermuda, and that it has made at least four independent colonizations of the island in the past 400 000 years. Because of the limited larval life of Cittarium, the window for colonization may be a very narrow period at the onset of interglacials when the SST has risen sufficiently to make Bermuda habitable but the velocity of the Gulf Stream is still sufficiently rapid to transport viable larvae from the Bahamas. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 110 , 235–243.  相似文献

At Humingbird Cay, Exuma, Bahamas, distributions of bothRhizophora mangle (red mangrove) andAvicennia germinans (black mangrove) are closely correlated with amounts of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the soil.R. mangle is primarily distributed within large areas of low to moderate H2S concentrations (mean= 40 mg/l). H2S levels underA. germinans are lower (mean = 22 mg/l), but the area immediately beyond their root zone often has extremely high sulfide concentrations (mean= 120 mg/l). These results suggest that past attempts to explain mangrove distribution in terms of monotonic soil gradients, the dispersal characteristics of propagules, and interspecific competition are incomplete, and that it will be necessary to examine the link between soil sulfur chemistry and mangrove distribution more fully.  相似文献

Coral reef anthozoans exhibit extensive morphological variation across and within environmental clines making it difficult to define species boundaries. The relative contributions of genetic variation and ecophenotypic plasticity to the observed phenotypic variation are unknown in most cases. The branching octocoral Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae is widely distributed throughout the Caribbean and colonies vary in appearance within and among populations. We performed genetic and morphological analyses of P.elisabethae from multiple locations within the Bahamas, as well as a Florida Keys and a distant western Caribbean location to determine the levels of genetic and morphological variation (colony form and sclerites characteristics) across populations from different sites, and assessed whether there was congruence between the genetic and morphological variation. Based on sequences of the internal transcribed spacer region of the ribosomal DNA, four groups were found that generally correspond to the geography of the Bahamas. Morphometric analysis of branch and branchlet characteristics indicated that colonies from two of the sites differed from the rest, but there was no clear correspondence between genetic and morphological variation. In general, there were no qualitative differences in the sclerites from the different populations. However, there were some differences in the dimensions of scaphoids and rods of colonies from different sites. This study has shown that P. elisabethae displays genetic and morphologic variation among some populations of the Bahamas, Florida and San Andres, Colombia. P. elisabethae is harvested in the Bahamas and these findings should be considered in management plans and conservation efforts for the species.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis for several Caribbean reef fish species that there is no difference in nursery function among mangrove, seagrass and shallow reef habitat as measured by: (a) patterns of juvenile and adult density, (b) assemblage composition, and (c) relative predation rates. Results indicated that although some mangrove and seagrass sites showed characteristics of nursery habitats, this pattern was weak. While almost half of our mangrove and seagrass sites appeared to hold higher proportions of juvenile fish (all species pooled) than did reef sites, this pattern was significant in only two cases. In addition, only four of the six most abundant and commercially important species (Haemulon flavolineatum, Haemulon sciurus, Lutjanus apodus, Lutjanus mahogoni, Scarus iserti, and Sparisoma aurofrenatum) showed patterns of higher proportions of juvenile fish in mangrove and/or seagrass habitat(s) relative to coral reefs, and were limited to four of nine sites. Faunal similarity between reef and either mangrove or seagrass habitats was low, suggesting little, if any exchange between them. Finally, although relative risk of predation was lower in mangrove/seagrass than in reef habitats, variance in rates was substantial suggesting that not all mangrove/seagrass habitats function equivalently. Specifically, relative risk varied between morning and afternoon, and between sites of similar habitat, yet varied little, in some cases, between habitats (mangrove/seagrass vs. coral reefs). Consequently, our results caution against generalizations that all mangrove and seagrass habitats have nursery function.  相似文献

Abstract The grey mangrove tree, Avicennia marina, forms a hard substratum in an area otherwise dominated by soft-sediment. Various intertidal organisms attach to and move about on the trees. The abundant barnacles Elminius covenus, Hexaminius popeiana and Hexaminius foliorum live on a variety of substrata in mangrove forests. Their patterns of distribution and abundance were recorded and models proposed to explain these patterns. Densities of barnacles on bark, leaves and twigs of A. marina were estimated in a locality near Sydney. Elminius covenus were more abundant on bark than on leaves or twigs of A. marina. Hexaminius popeiana, although less abundant on bark than E. covenus, were not found on twigs or leaves. In contrast, H. foliorum were more abundant on twigs than leaves and were not found on the bark of A. marina. Densities of barnacles were greater in the seaward than in landward parts of the forest. Elminius covenus were the most abundant barnacles, H. foliorum were less abundant and H. popeiana were virtually absent in the landward zone. Barnacles in the seaward zone were most abundant at mid-tidal levels, less at high and low tidal levels of trunks and more abundant on lower than upper surfaces of trunks and leaves. The densities of barnacles differed according to the orientation of the bark or leaf. Models are proposed to explain the patterns of distribution and abundance of these barnacles. Each involves larval supply, settlement and post-settlement mortality. It is concluded that similar processes determining patterns of distribution and abundance for sessile organisms living on rock platforms may be applicable to sessile organisms living in the very different habitats of mangrove forests.  相似文献

Several western Atlantic species of Chelidonura have been described mainly based on differences in colour pattern. Sequence data from two mitochondrial [cytochrome oxidase I (COI), 16S] genes and a nuclear [histone 3 (H3)] gene have revealed that all colour forms previously recognized from across the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Bermuda belong to the same species, Chelidonura berolina. However, several specimens from the Bahamas are genetically and morphologically distinct and are herein described as a new species, Chelidonura normani sp. nov. Externally, C. normani can only be distinguished from C. berolina by the morphology of the posterior end of the body and not by colour pattern. Both C. berolina and C. normani are genetically and morphologically distinct from the eastern Atlantic species Chelidonura africana, but the split between C. berolina and C. normani predates the split between C. berolina and C. africana. All three species differ in their protoconch morphology, which suggests different developmental modes. Furthermore, all three species display a broad variation in colour pattern, which raises questions on the biological significance of colour in this group. Background

Regional genetic connectivity models are critical for successful conservation and management of marine species. Even though rocky shore invertebrates have been used as model systems to understand genetic structure in some marine environments, our understanding of connectivity in Caribbean communities is based overwhelmingly on studies of tropical fishes and corals. In this study, we investigate population connectivity and diversity of Cittarium pica, an abundant rocky shore trochid gastropod that is commercially harvested across its natural range, from the Bahamas to Venezuela.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We tested for genetic structure using DNA sequence variation at the mitochondrial COI and 16S loci, AMOVA and distance-based methods. We found substantial differentiation among Caribbean sites. Yet, genetic differentiation was associated only with larger geographic scales within the Caribbean, and the pattern of differentiation only partially matched previous assessments of Caribbean connectivity, including those based on larval dispersal from hydrodynamic models. For instance, the Bahamas, considered an independent region by previous hydrodynamic studies, showed strong association with Eastern Caribbean sites in our study. Further, Bonaire (located in the east and close to the meridional division of the Caribbean basin) seems to be isolated from other Eastern sites.

Conclusions/Significance

The significant genetic structure and observed in C. pica has some commonalities in pattern with more commonly sampled taxa, but presents features, such as the differentiation of Bonaire, that appear unique. Further, the level of differentiation, together with regional patterns of diversity, has important implications for the application of conservation and management strategies in this commercially harvested species.  相似文献
