The component Allee effect has been defined as ‘a positive relationship between any measure of individual fitness and the number or density of conspecifics’. Larger plant populations or large patches have shown a higher pollinator visitation rate, which may give rise to an Allee effect in reproduction of the plants. We experimentally tested the effect of number of conspecifics on reproduction and pollinator visitation in Eschscholzia californica Cham., an invasive plant in Chile. We then built patches with two, eight and 16 flowering individuals of E. californica (11 replicates per treatment) in an area characterised by dominance of the study species. We found that E. californica exhibits a component Allee effect, as the number of individuals of this species has a positive effect on individual seed set. However, individual fruit production was not affected by the number of plants examined. Pollinator visitation rate was also independent of the number of plants, so this factor would not explain the Allee effect. This rate was positively correlated with the total number of flowers in the patches. We also found that the number of plants did not affect the seed mass or proportion of germinated seeds in the patches. Higher pollen availability in patches with 16 plants and pollination by wind could explain the Allee effect. The component Allee effect identified could lead to a weak demographic Allee effect that might reduce the rate of spread of E. californica. Knowledge of this would be useful for management of this invasive plant in Chile.  相似文献

Intra- and interspecific density dependence has profound consequences for plant population and community dynamics. In long-lived plants, however, lifetime patterns and mechanisms of density dependence are difficult to study. Here, we examine effects of intraspecific and community density on the lifetime fecundity of two long-lived shrub species from South African Fynbos: Protea repens (animal-pollinated, hermaphroditic) and Leucadendron rubrum (wind-pollinated, dioecious). Both species are serotinous, retaining seeds in cones until fire kills the mother plant. We measured lifetime fecundity as the product of cone number, proportion of cones that are not damaged by predation and seed set (fertile seeds per intact cone). Intraspecific and community densities were quantified by counting individuals of target species and all Proteaceae in small- and large-scale neighbourhoods (10 m and 50 m radius) around each focal individual. Additionally, we determined the age and size of focal individuals. We found that lifetime fecundity of the wind-pollinated L. rubrum is density independent. In contrast, the lifetime fecundity of the animal-pollinated P. repens increases with large-scale intraspecific density and shows a hump-shaped relationship to large-scale community density. Community density has a hump-shaped effect on seed set (probably through partial absence of generalized pollinators at low and competition for pollinators at high densities) and negatively affects cone number per individual. For both species, plant age decreases seed set while increasing lifetime fecundity. The qualitative differences in the density dependence of lifetime fecundity may arise from differences between animal and wind pollination. In particular, interactions with generalized animal pollinators may cause community-level Allee effects with profound consequences for the future dynamics of long-lived plant populations and communities.  相似文献

Plant species may be subject to Allee effects if individuals experience a reduction in pollination services when populations are small or sparse. I examined temporal variation in reproductive success of the monocarpic Haleakala silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp. macrocephalum) over five years, to determine if plants flowering out of synchrony with most of the population (i.e., in low flowering years) exhibited lower percent seed set than synchronously-flowering plants (i.e., those flowering in high flowering years). Through two pollination experiments conducted over multiple years, I also measured pollen limitation and self-incompatibility in this species. The number of flowering plants varied greatly among years, as did reproductive success. Percent seed set was significantly correlated with the number of plants flowering annually, such that plants flowering in high flowering years (1997 and 2001) exhibited significantly higher percent seed set than did plants flowering in low flowering years (1998-2000). In the 3-year pollen limitation study, plants flowering asynchronously were pollen-limited, whereas plants flowering synchronously were not. This species is strongly self-incompatible. Results of this study demonstrate that the Haleakala silversword experiences reduced reproductive success in low flowering years, and suggest that this Allee effect is pollinator-mediated. Allee effects in plants are an understudied yet potentially important force with implications for the population dynamics and conservation of rare species.  相似文献

The density of a plant population is expected to influence reproductive success through changes in the quantity and quality of pollination service, or because both density and reproduction respond to quality of the local environment. We reported previously that seed set in sparse natural populations of Delphinium nuttallianum and Aconitum columbianum was lower than in nearby dense populations, whereas quantity of pollination service was equivalent. To explore the hypotheses that environmental quality or pollination quality are lower in sparse natural populations, leading to lower seed set, we manipulated density using arrays of potted plants. In three replicate experiments with D. nuttallianum, pollinator visitation rate and seed set were indistinguishable in sparse and dense arrays, consistent with the interpretation that environmental quality contributed to the earlier result in natural populations of this species. In three replicates with A. columbianum, visitation rate tended to increase with density, and seed set increased significantly, in contrast to our earlier result. One element of pollination quality, the degree of within-plant selfing, did not vary between sparse and dense arrays. These results highlight the complexity of mechanisms by which population parameters may influence plant reproductive success, and the temporal variation that characterizes pollination service.  相似文献

Seed production and predispersal seed predation in the shrub Acacia suaveolens were examined over 3 consecutive years in eight populations in south-eastern Australia. Seed-crop sizes varied both between and within populations of different ages. Seed production was maximal in the first one to four flowering seasons after establishment, and then declined with plant age. The size of the annual seed-crop was also influenced by rainfall for that year. Predispersal seed predation varies between populations over fruiting seasons with the initial large seed-crops resulting in predator satiation. Within one fruiting season, no significant variation in the extent of predispersal seed predation was found in any of three populations studied. There were two major forms of predispersal seed loss: toss of whole fruits to Melanterius corosus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and external insect seed grazers, and loss of individual seeds within fruits to M. corosus. Exclusion experiments showed that seeds lost to these predispersal seed predators would otherwise have been matured by the parent plant. The effects of predispersal seed predation cannot be directly related to seedling recruitment. Indirectly, such predation may influence the dispersion of seeds in the soil profile and hence, subsequent recruitment.  相似文献

Astragalus australis var. olympicus is an endemic plant of the Olympic Mountains, Washington. It is considered a Species of Concern by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This study focused on the reproductive biology of the plant from flower production through seed germination to identify possible weak points that might contribute to its rarity and impede its conservation. Most plants produced a large mean number of flowers and ovules (314.8 and 4106, respectively), but relatively few of these formed fruits and seeds (25.8 and 3.8%, respectively). In decreasing importance, ovules in fruits were lost to predation, seed abortion, and lack of fertilization. The percentages of these fates differed among sites and years. Excluding pollinators by bagging flowers reduced fruit set by ∼50%, but seed set per fruit and seed mass were unaffected. Germination was affected by scarification, temperature, and moisture availability. About 11% of seeds damaged by predispersal seed predators (weevil larvae) remained viable and were released from dormancy. I hypothesize that predispersal seed predation (over 80% at one site) has a negative effect on population growth. Conservation of this species could benefit from improved fruit set and decreased seed predation.  相似文献

Background and Aims

A plant investing in reproduction partitions resources between flowering and seed production. Under resource limitation, altered allocations may result in floral trait variations, leading to compromised fecundity. Floral longevity and timing of selfing are often the traits most likely to be affected. The duration of corolla retention determines whether fecundity results from outcrossing or by delayed selfing-mediated reproductive assurance. In this study, the role of pollination schedules and soil water availability on floral longevity and seed production is tested in Collinsia heterophylla (Plantaginaceae).

Methods

Using three different watering regimes and pollination schedules, effects on floral longevity and seed production were studied in this protandrous, flowering annual.

Key Results

The results reveal that soil water status and pollination together influence floral longevity with low soil water and hand-pollinations early in the floral lifespan reducing longevity. However, early pollinations under excess water did not extend longevity, implying that resource surplus does not lengthen the outcrossing period. The results also indicate that pollen receipt, a reliable cue for fecundity, accelerates flower drop. Early corolla abscission under drought stress could potentially exacerbate sexual conflict in this protandrous, hermaphroditic species by ensuring self-pollen paternity and enabling male control of floral longevity. While pollination schedules did not affect fecundity, water stress reduced per-capita seed numbers. Unmanipulated flowers underwent delayed autonomous selfing, producing very few seeds, suggesting that inbreeding depression may limit benefits of selfing.

Conclusions

In plants where herkogamy and dichogamy facilitate outcrossing, floral longevity determines reproductive success and mating system. Reduction in longevity under drought suggests a strong environmental effect that could potentially alter the preferred breeding mode in this mixed-mated species. Extrapolating the findings to unpredictable global drought cycles, it is suggested that in addition to reducing yield, water stress may influence the evolutionary trajectory of plant mating system.  相似文献

Pedicularis rex, a self-compatible alpine herb, depends exclusively on pollinators for reproduction. Previous study has revealed that 74.7 % of genetic variability occurs among populations in Yunnan, indicating a mixed mating system for the species. The large floral display also indicates high potential geitonogamy. Therefore, plant density and display size may be important factors influencing the realized mating system of P. rex. In the study reported here we explored the effects of plant density and floral display size on pollinator movements and thus outcrossing rate in two patches of in P. rex at low and high plant densities. We examined foraging behavior of bumblebees, measured reproductive outputs under hand and natural pollination, and estimated the outcrossing rates using RAPD markers. Floral display size was significantly larger and bumblebees visited significantly more flowers in sequence on individual plants in the sparse patch than in the dense patch. We found a significant positive correlation between floral display size and successive visits in the sparse patch, but not in the dense patch. Regression analysis revealed a significant inverse correlation between fruit production and flower production per plant with a theoretical maximum of 63 fruits per plant, but no relationship between seed production and flower production per plant. Contrary to previous studies on genetic structure, however, we found an unexpectedly high outcrossing rate in both the sparse and the dense patch (t m = 1.151 and 0.924, respectively). Resource limitation may intensify seed competition and result in selected seed abortion, which may largely explain the unexpectedly high outcrossing rate.  相似文献

Inflorescences of the terrestrial aroid Xanthosoma daguense in the Andes of Colombia are visited by Dinastinae and Nitidulidae beetles. Plants produce one inflorescence at a time, which is pollinated during the first night of opening. Dynastine beetles act as pollinators, whereas Nitidulids lay eggs in the inflorescence and the larvae damage the seeds. We explored the effects of floral offer and distance among inflorescences on the number of pollinator visits, fruit production, and predispersal seed predation. Number of Dynastine visits per inflorescence tended to increase with increasing distances among inflorescences, but fruit predation increased when inflorescences were more clumped. Both pollinator visitation rates and predispersal seed predation were low at high floral offer. Fruit set increased when inflorescences were visited by two or more Dynastines, but the proportion of fruits damaged by Nitidulid larvae was equivalent to the increase in fruit production due to more Dinastine visits. The net result was a similar number of undamaged fruits in all infructescences produced, independent of the number of Dinastine visits. Our results revealed that both pollinators and predators responded to the number of available inflorescences and their spatial distribution, but they had opposing effects on the infructescences. Thus, our study suggests that the interaction of two ecological processes, pollination and predispersal seed predation, may cancel each other's effects under natural conditions.  相似文献

Summary A simple model is presented describing the interaction between weather conditions, seed production of a longlived herb, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria (Asclepiadaceae), and abundance of a predispersal seed predator, Euphranta connexa (Diptera, Tephritidae). The model is used to investigate the role of weather-induced fluctuations in seed set on the interaction between plant and seed predator and the resulting longterm production of seeds escaping predispersal seed predation.As weather variability increases Euphranta populations become less effective in tracking their food resources, leading to increased longterm production of dispersing seeds. Occasional years of crop failure due to drought stress may thus in the long run be of benefit to the plant.  相似文献

Many of the mammals undergoing drastic declines in tropical forests worldwide are important seed dispersers and seed predators, and thus changes in mammal communities due to hunting will affect plant recruitment. It has been hypothesized that larger-seeded species will suffer greater reductions in seed removal and thus greater increases in predispersal seed predation than smaller-seeded species. We compared primary and secondary seed removal and predispersal seed predation of two tree species between hunted and nonhunted sites in Central Panama. Seeds of Oenocarpus mapora (Arecaceae) are 16-times greater in size than those of Cordia bicolor (Boraginaceae). We quantified primary seed removal and predispersal seed predation using seed traps, and we assessed secondary seed removal using seed removal plots. Primary removal of C. bicolor was 43 percent lower in the hunted sites, while primary removal of O. mapora was not significantly different. Secondary removal of unprotected O. mapora seeds on the ground was 59 percent lower in hunted sites, while secondary removal of C. bicolor was not significantly different. Predispersal seed predation of O. mapora by mammals was significantly lower in hunted sites, while predispersal seed predation by insects was not significantly different in either species. In combination with other studies, our results suggest that seed size is not a reliable predictor of the impacts of hunting. Mammal defaunation differentially affects stages and modes of seed dispersal and seed predation of different plant species, suggesting that these influences are complex and related to multiple plant traits.  相似文献

Insect seed predation may vary depending on seed production. The present study considers the hypothesis that the rates of seed predation tend to be smaller in years of higher fruit production. Thus, we monitored the production of fruits and predation of seeds of the palm Syagrus romanzoffiana over 2?years in the Atlantic Forest (Parque Municipal da Lagoa do Peri, Florianópolis, SC, Brazil), between July 2006 and June 2008. Plots of 0.25?m2 were fitted under 20 mother plants and fruits were monthly collected for assessment of abundance and seed predation. There was variation in fruit production between the 2?years and among reproductive plants. Predation rates were high and occurred in the predispersal phase by the Curculionidae Revena rubiginosa Boheman, Anchylorhynchus aegrotus Fahraeus, and Anchylorhynchus variabilis Gyllenhal. Seed predation by these species of Anchylorhynchus is first registered in the present study. In average, about 60% of the seeds monthly produced in the population tend to escape insect predation in year of high or low production, becoming available for recruitment. The predation rate was not related to the amount of fruits produced per reproductive plant. Also, different than expected, there was a positive relation between the rates of seed predation and the total of fruits produced monthly on the plots. Thus, no evidence for the satiation of insect seed predators was found in this study with S. romanzoffiana.  相似文献

Communities of Sorghum intrans, a tropical annual grass of north-west Australia, contain sparse patches several metres in diameter within otherwise dense swards. These patches are persistent for at least ca. 4 years, despite the fact that these species are annuals which lack a persistent seed-bank. Three possible causes of the sparse patches were investigated at a site near Darwin: loss of viable seeds through granivory or death; high plant mortality; or poor fecundity. This was done by augmenting the seed-banks of S. intrans in the sparse patches, and thinning stands of seedlings in the surrounding, naturally dense areas, and comparing the results of these perturbations with controls. Granivory did not appear to be a cause of the sparse patches. Furthermore, the seeds in the sparse patches did not become inviable over the dry season. Compared with the plants of S. intrans in the naturally high-density areas, survival of the plants in the augmented patches was not reduced, but vigour and seed production were. Conversely, plants in the thinned stands had a higher survival rate and very much greater vigour and seed production than plants in either the undisturbed patches or the undisturbed surrounding areas. Biotic constraints to plant growth such as grazing and disease appeared to be unimportant. These sparse patches result from poor site potential for S. intrans which limits its growth and reproductive output.  相似文献

The Allee effect is a positive causal relationship between any component of fitness and population density or size. Allee effects strongly affect the persistence of small or sparse populations. Predicting Allee effects remains a challenge, possibly because not all causal mechanisms are known. We hypothesized that reproductive interference (an interspecific reproductive interaction that reduces the fitness of the species involved) can generate an Allee effect. If the density of the interfering species is constant, an increase in the population of the species receiving interference may dilute the per capita effect of reproductive interference and may generate an Allee effect. To test this hypothesis, we examined the effect of heterospecific males on the relationship between per capita fecundity and conspecific density in Callosobruchus chinensis and C. maculatus. Of the two species, only C. maculatus females suffer reproductive interference from heterospecific males. Only C. maculatus, the species susceptible to reproductive interference, demonstrated an Allee effect, and only when heterospecific males were present. In contrast, C. chinensis, the species not susceptible to reproductive interference, demonstrated no Allee effect regardless of the presence of heterospecific males. Our results show that reproductive interference in fact generated an Allee effect, suggesting the potential importance of interspecific sexual interactions especially in small or sparse populations, even in the absence of a shared resource. It may be possible to predict Allee effects produced by this mechanism a priori by testing reproductive interference between closely related species.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Cucumis melo subsp. agrestis (Cucurbitaceae) is cultivated in many African regions for its edible kernels used as a soup thickener. The plant, an annual, andromonoecious, trailing-vine species, is of high social, cultural and economic value for local communities. In order to improve the yield of this crop, the first step and our aim were to elucidate its breeding system.

Methods

Eight experimental pollination treatments were performed during three growing seasons to assess spontaneous selfing, self-compatibility and effects of pollen source (hermaphroditic vs. male flowers). Pollination success was determined by pollen tube growth and reproductive success was assessed by fruit, seed and seedling numbers and characteristics. The pollinator guild was surveyed and the pollination distance determined both by direct observations and by indirect fluorescent dye dispersal.

Key Results

The species is probably pollinated by several Hymenoptera, principally by Hypotrigona para. Pollinator flight distances varied from 25 to 69 cm. No evidence for apomixis or spontaneous self-pollination in the absence of insect visitors was found. The self-fertility index (SFI = 0) indicated a total dependence on pollinators for reproductive success. The effects of hand pollination on fruit set, seed number and seedling fitness differed among years. Pollen tube growth and reproductive success did not differ between self- and cross-pollinations. Accordingly, a high self-compatibility index for the fruit set (SCI = 1·00) and the seed number (SCI = 0·98) and a low inbreeding depression at all developmental stages (cumulative δ = 0·126) suggest a high selfing ability. Finally, pollen origin had no effect on fruit and seed sets.

Conclusions

This andromonoecious species has the potential for a mixed mating system with high dependence on insect-mediated pollination. The selfing rate through geitonogamy should be important.  相似文献

Small populations may suffer more severe pollen limitation and result in Allee effects. Sex ratio may also affect pollination and reproduction success in dioecious species, which is always overlooked when performing conservation and reintroduction tasks. In this study, we investigated whether and how population size and sex ratio affected pollen limitation and reproduction in the endangered Ottelia acuminata, a dioecious submerged species. We established experimental plots with increasing population size and male sex ratio. We observed insect visitation, estimated pollen limitation by hand‐pollinations and counted fruit set and seed production per fruit. Fruit set and seed production decreased significantly in small populations due to pollinator scarcity and thus suffered more severe pollen limitation. Although frequently visited, female‐biased larger populations also suffered severe pollen limitation due to few effective visits and insufficient pollen availability. Rising male ratio enhanced pollination service and hence reproduction. Unexpectedly, pollinator preferences did not cause reduced reproduction in male‐biased populations because of high pollen availability. However, reproductive outputs showed more variability in severe male‐biased populations. Our results revealed two component Allee effects in fruit set and seed production, mediated by pollen limitation in O. acuminata. Moreover, reproduction decreased significantly in larger female‐biased populations, increasing the risk of an Allee effect.  相似文献

Herbivory and disease can shape the evolution of plant populations, but their joint effects are rarely investigated. Families of plants of Brassica rapa (Brassicaceae) were grown from seeds collected in two naturalized populations in an experimental garden. We examined leaf infection by the fungus Alternaria, seed predation by a gall midge (Cecidomyiidae) and plant life-history traits. Plants from one population had heavier seeds, were more likely to flower, had less fungal infection, had more seed predation and were more fecund. Fungal infection score and seed predation rate increased with plant size, but large plants still had the greatest number of undamaged fruits. Spatial heterogeneity in the experimental garden was significant; seed predation rate and fecundity varied among blocks. An apparent tradeoff existed between susceptibility to disease and seed predation: plants with the highest fungal infection score had the lowest seed predation rate. Alternaria infection varied between populations, but the disease had no effect on fecundity. Seed predation did reduce fecundity. Damaged fruits had 31.4% fewer intact seeds. However, evidence for additive genetic variation in resistance to seed predation was weak. Therefore, neither disease nor seed predation was likely to be a strong agent of genetically based fecundity selection.  相似文献

Fragmentation exposes plants to extreme environmental conditions with implications for species phenology and reproduction. We investigated whether isolation and edge effects influence size, flowering time, fruit set, and seedling establishment of Anadenanthera peregrina var. falcata. We compared trees in the interior (n?=?85), and on the edge (n?=?74) of a cerrado savanna fragment as well as in a pasture (n?=?26) with respect to size, flowering phenology, flower and fruit production, fruit and seed set, predispersal seed predation, and seedling establishment. Trees in the pasture were larger and produced a higher number of flowers and fruits than trees on the edge and interior, yet seed set did not differ across environments. The plant size structure explained the flower and fruit production, and the self-compatibility breeding system caused a similar seed set regardless of the environment. First flowering was later and fruit set higher in the interior. We argue that time of first flower influenced the fruit set of Anadenathera. Edge and isolated trees started to flower earlier as a response to microclimatic conditions—mainly temperature—reducing the fruit set. Predispersal seed predation was lower among pasture trees. Conversely, we found seedlings only on the edge and in the interior of cerrado, suggesting that the pasture was of poor quality habitat for Anadenanthera recruitment. Isolation affected the plant size structure and reproduction of Anadenanthera trees. Studies comparing plant phenology under contrasting environmental conditions may offer clues on how global change may affect plant reproduction in the tropics.  相似文献

Floral gender in angiosperms often varies within and among populations. We conducted a field survey to test how predispersal seed predation affects sex allocation in an andromonoecious alpine herb Peucedanum multivittatum. We compared plant size, male and perfect flower production, fruit set, and seed predation rate over three years among nine populations inhabiting diverse snowmelt conditions in alpine meadows. Flowering period of individual populations varied from mid‐July to late August reflecting the snowmelt time. Although perfect flower and fruit productions increased with plant size, size dependency of male flower production was less clear. The number of male flowers was larger in the early‐flowering populations, while the number of perfect flowers increased in the late‐flowering populations. Thus, male‐biased sex allocation was common in the early‐flowering populations. Fruit‐set rates varied among populations and between years, irrespective of flowering period. Fruit‐set success of individual plants increased with perfect flower number, but independent of male flower number. Seed predation by lepidopteran larvae was intense in the early‐flowering populations, whereas predation damage was absent in the late‐flowering populations, reflecting the extent of phenological matching between flowering time of host plants and oviposition period of predator moths. Seed predation rate was independent of male and perfect flower numbers of individual plants. Thus, seed predation is a stochastic event in each population. There was a clear correlation between the proportion of male flowers and the intensity of seed predation among populations. These results suggest that male‐biased sex allocation could be a strategy to reduce seed predation damage but maintain the effort as a pollen donor under intensive seed predation.  相似文献

开花物候是物种间相互作用的重要生活史特征和适合度因子,在全球气候变化的背景下而备受关注.为探讨开花时间如何存种内和种间水平上影响植物的传粉和生殖成功,我们连续3年(2003-2005)对不同花期和伴生种存在情况下的鹤首马先蒿(Pedicularis gruina)的传粉者访花忠实度、受粉率、坐果率、单果种子产量和果实被啃食频率进行了比较研究.结果表明鹤首马先蒿的坐果率主要受其传粉环境的影响:在没有伴生种时,不同时期鹤首马先蒿的坐果率没有显著差异,34-38%的花可以坐果;在有伴生种存在时既可以显著提高其坐果率,也可显著降低其坐果率,这取决于传粉者类型以及伴生种密穗马先蒿(P.densispica)花期的差异.密穗马先蒿具有花蜜和花粉双重报酬,在群落中可以作为主体物种吸引传粉者并间接促进与其伴生的鹤首马先蒿的传粉和生殖成功.同样无蜜的管花马先蒿(P.siphonantha)和鹤首马先蒿伴生,则是通过提高群落水平对传粉者的吸引力进而直接促进鹤首马先蒿的传粉和生殖成功.此外,研究结果也表明开花时间对坐果率没有显著影响,但是显著影响单果种子产量和果实被啃食的频率.在相同的传粉条件下早花期植株单果种子产量显著高于晚花期的种子产量,同时早花期的果实被啃食的频率显著增加.  相似文献
