We investigated the reproductive biology of Crotalaria micans, a colonizing species that occurs in disturbed sites. The flowers have two whorls of stamens with differential growth and dimorphic anthers. The inner anthers serve two functions: 1) to cooperate with the stylar brush in the pollen presentation, and 2) to push the remaining pollen within the keel onto the stigma at the end of the receptivity period. Flowers pass through three phases: a) male phase, when outer anthers release their pollen, but stigmas are not receptive; b) female phase, when stigmas are receptive, but still separated from flowers' own pollen, and c) an autogamous phase, when the round anthers grow towards the stigma, leading to delayed autonomous self-pollination. Because C. micans is completely self-compatible, delayed self-pollination and geitonogamy result in approximately 76% of seeds being self-fertilized.  相似文献

The Bignoniaceae possess sensitive bilobate stigmas that close after stimulation. We determined factors involved in stigma closure and reopening in four species of Bignoniaceae from the National Parks of Catimbau, Northeastern Brazil (Anemopaegma laeve, Arrabidaea limae, Jacaranda rugosa and Tabebuia impetiginosa). The study showed that any mechanical touch promoted the stigmatic closure. Only the deposition of viable con-specific pollen (self- and cross-pollen), however, maintained stigmas permanently closed. In Arrabidaea limae part of the stigmas reopened after self- and cross-pollination. After mechanical stimulation, deposition of pollen from other plant species, of dead con-specific pollen or of sand, the stigma lobes opened again after 38 to 68 min. The definitive closure may have a negative effect on the reproductive success of the involved plants, because the stigmas are permanently unavailable for pollen deposition. In self-incompatible species with mass-flowering blooming pattern, where pollinators promote high levels of geitonogamy, definitive stigma closure causes low fruit set.  相似文献

In most plant species with abiotic pollination systems, pollen is dispersed in three dimensions. Theoretical considerations suggest, however, that there are significant advantages for two-dimensional pollination systems over three-dimensional systems, especially if pollen is dispersed in conveyances or aggregations of large diameter. We report that two-dimensional pollination systems occur in the genera Halodule, Halophila, Lepilaena, and Ruppia, where pollen grains are not transported through the water singly, but in rafts or search vehicles. These genera possess unusual pollen morphologies which facilitate assemblage of pollen grains into search vehicles. These floating search vehicles have large diameters, thus greatly increasing probability of encountering a stigma. The grains have a hydrophobic surface that appears to mediate adhesion by an external coating of proteins and carbohydrates. Similar adaptations to two-dimensional pollination are found in the target organs, the stigmas. The long filamentous stigmas of the marine genera float, as do the indusiate stigmas of the freshwater genera, creating small depressions in the water surface. Pollination occurs through the collision of a moving search vehicle with a floating stigma. The existence of similar pollen search vehicles, stigma morphologies, and flowering phenologies in these unrelated hydrophilous genera evidences convergent evolution towards efficient search strategies in surface-pollinated aquatic plants.  相似文献

Appropriate timing of flowering is critical for propagation and reproductive success in plants. Therefore, flowering time is coordinately regulated by endogenous developmental programs and external signals, such as changes in photoperiod and temperature. Flowering is delayed by a transient shift to cold temperatures that frequently occurs during early spring in the temperate zones. It is known that the delayed flowering by short-term cold stress is mediated primarily by the floral repressor FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC). However, how the FLC-mediated cold signals are integrated into flowering genetic pathways is not fully understood. We have recently reported that the INDUCER OF CBF EXPRESSION 1 (ICE1), which is a master regulator of cold responses, FLC, and the floral integrator SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS 1 (SOC1) constitute an elaborated feedforward-feedback loop that integrates photoperiod and cold temperature signals to regulate seasonal flowering in Arabidopsis. Cold temperatures promote the binding of ICE1 to FLC promoter to induce its expression, resulting in delayed flowering. However, under floral inductive conditions, SOC1 induces flowering by blocking the ICE1 activity. We propose that the ICE1-FLC-SOC1 signaling network fine-tunes the timing of photoperiodic flowering during changing seasons.  相似文献

The dioecious plant Silene latifolia depends on nocturnal insects for pollination. To increase the chance of cross-pollination, pollen grains seem to be released and stigmas seem to be receptive simultaneously at night. We divided the floral development of S. latifolia into 1–20 stages, and determined the timetables of male and female function. The corolla of both male and female flowers opens at sunset (1900 hours) and closes at sunrise (0900 hours). To investigate the period of the reproductive phase of male and female function, we measured the germination rate on a pollen medium and the pollen germination rate on stigma during the period when stamens and stigmas were viable in the timetable. Male flowers had early- and late-maturing stamens that had the highest pollen viability, germination rate and pollen tube growth at midnight (0000 hours) at 1 day after flowering (DAF) and 0000 hours at 2 DAF. In contrast, female flowers maintained a germination rate of nearly 100 % from 1800 hours at 1 DAF to 1200 hours at 3 DAF. These results suggested that S. latifolia transferred the matured pollen grains from male flowers to female flowers only at night.  相似文献

Pollen hydration on dry stigmas is strictly regulated by pollen–stigma interactions in Brassicaceae. Although several related molecular events have been described, the molecular mechanism underlying pollen hydration remains elusive. Multiple B-class pollen coat proteins(PCP-Bs) are involved in pollen hydration. Here, by analyzing the interactions of two PCP-Bs with three Arabidopsis thaliana stigmas strongly expressing S-domain receptor kinase(SD-RLK), we determined that SD-RLK28 directly intera...  相似文献

Tristyly is a rare floral polymorphism known to occur in only five flowering plant families. One unresolved and potential additional case of tristyly concerns the genus Hugonia in the Linaceae. Here we confirm the existence of tristyly in the genus by reporting floral measurements made on Hugonia serrata Lam., an extremely rare species endemic to the Mascarene Islands of La Réunion and Mauritius in the southern Indian Ocean. We conducted an extensive search of all natural habitats on La Réunion Island where the species had been previously reported. Twenty-eight individuals were found, of which nine were in flower. Of the nine flowering individuals five had long-styled flowers with the stigmas placed above the two levels of anthers, three had intermediate length styles with the stigmas placed between the two anther levels, and one had stigmas placed below the two anther levels, i.e., three floral morphs could be identified based on the sequence of stigma and anther positions. Reciprocity and precision indices calculated for sexual organ length in each morph confirm that this variation is well within the range of values observed by previous workers on other tristylous species in other families. Our empirical data confirm the existence of tristyly in the genus Hugonia, thereby raising the number of known families in which tristyly occurs to six. Pollen size, pollen number, and anther length increased slightly with stamen length, but the low number of plants precludes statistical tests of these trends. A bibliographic survey suggests that tristyly may occur in several other species of the genus.  相似文献

Arabidopsis has three cytokinin receptors genes: CRE1, AHK2 and AHK3. Availability of plants that are homozygous mutant for these three genes indicates that cytokinin receptors in the haploid cells are dispensable for the development of male and female gametophytes. The triple mutants form a few flowers but never set seed, indicating that reproductive growth is impaired. We investigated which reproductive processes are affected in the triple mutants. Anthers of mutant plants contained fewer pollen grains and did not dehisce. Pollen in the anthers completed the formation of the one vegetative nucleus and the two sperm nuclei, as seen in wild type. The majority of the ovules were abnormal: 78% lacked the embryo sac, 10% carried a female gametophyte that terminated its development before completing three rounds of nuclear division, and about 12% completed three rounds of nuclear division but the gametophytes were smaller than those of the wild type. Reciprocal crosses between the wild type and the triple mutants indicated that pollen from mutant plants did not germinate on wild-type stigmas, and wild-type pollen did not germinate on mutant stigmas. These results suggest that cytokinin receptors in the sporophyte are indispensable for anther dehiscence, pollen maturation, induction of pollen germination by the stigma and female gametophyte formation and maturation.Key words: cytokinin, cytokinin receptor, female gametophyte, male gametophyte, stigma  相似文献

Background and Aims

Reproductive assurance, the ability to produce seeds when pollinators or mates are scarce, is thought to be the major advantage of selfing in flowering plants. However, few studies have performed a direct cost–benefit analysis of the selective advantage of selfing, particularly given a long-term perspective among populations or across several flowering seasons within population. This study examined the fertility consequences of autonomous selfing in Roscoea schneideriana (Zingiberaceae), a small perennial Himalayan ginger typically found in habitats at around 3000 m a.s.l.

Methods

The floral biology of R. schneideriana was studied in natural populations; the capacity for autonomous selfing was estimated using pollinator exclusion experiments; the timing of selfing was quantified by anther removal at different times during flowering; whether autonomous selfing increases seed production was tested by emasculating flowers; and the magnitude of inbreeding depression was estimated by comparing relative performance of progeny from self- and cross-pollinations. Pollinator observations were also conducted in the natural populations.

Key Results

The hooked stigmas of most flowers curl towards the anther and can contact pollen grains at an early stage of anthesis. Flowers with potential pollinators excluded set of as many seeds per fruit as hand-selfed and opened flowers. Autonomous selfing mostly occurs within 2 d of anthesis and can increase seed production by an average of 84 % in four populations during the flowering seasons of 2005–2007. Visits by effective pollinators were extremely rare. The cumulative inbreeding depression of R. schneideriana was 0·226.

Conclusions

Autonomous selfing in R. schneideriana is achieved by stigmas curling towards the anthers early in flowering. It is suggested that under the poor pollination conditions, autonomous selfing has been selected for in this alpine ginger because it provides substantial reproductive assurance with very low costs.Key words: Zingiberaceae, Roscoea, autonomous self-pollination, reproductive assurance, inbreeding depression, pollinator failure, Himalayan species  相似文献

Biological invasions are a threat to the maintenance of ecological processes, including pollination. Plant-flower visitor networks are traditionally used as a surrogated for pollination at the community level, despite they do not represent the pollination process, which takes place at the stigma of plants where pollen grains are deposited. Here we investigated whether the invasion of the alien plant Impatiens glandulifera (Balsaminaceae) affects pollen transfer at the community level. We asked whether more alien pollen is deposited on the stigmas of plants on invaded sites, whether deposition is affected by stigma type (dry, semidry and wet) and whether the invasion of I. glandulifera changes the structure of the resulting pollen transfer networks. We sampled stigmas of plants on 10 sites invaded by I. glandulifera (hereafter, balsam) and 10 non-invaded control sites. All 20 networks had interactions with balsam pollen, although significantly more balsam pollen was found on plants with dry stigmas in invaded areas. Balsam pollen deposition was restricted to a small subset of plant species, which is surprising because pollinators are known to carry high loads of balsam pollen. Balsam invasion did not affect the loading of native pollen, nor did it affect pollen transfer network properties; networks were modular and poorly nested, both of which are likely to be related to the specificity of pollen transfer interactions. Our results indicate that pollination networks become more specialized when moving from the flower visitation to the level of pollen transfer networks. Therefore, caution is needed when inferring pollination from patterns of insect visitation or insect pollen loads as the relationship between these and pollen deposition is not straightforward.  相似文献

Background and Aims Floral traits are essential for ensuring successful pollination and reproduction in flowering plants. In particular, style and anther positions are key for pollination accuracy and efficiency. Variation in these traits among individuals has been well studied, but less is known about variation within flowers and plants and its effect on pollination and reproductive success. Methods Style deflexion is responsible for herkogamy and important for pollen deposition in Passiflora incarnata. The degree of deflexion may vary among stigmas within flowers as well as among flowers. We measured the variability of style deflexion at both the flower and the plant level. The fitness consequences of the mean and variation of style deflexion were then evaluated under natural pollination by determining their relationship to pollen deposition, seed production and average seed weight using structural equation modelling. In addition, the relationship between style deflexion and self-pollen deposition was estimated in a greenhouse experiment.Key Results We found greater variation in style deflexion within flowers and plants than among plants. Variation of style deflexion at the flower and plant level was positively correlated, suggesting that variability in style deflexion may be a distinct trait in P. incarnata. Lower deflexion and reduced variation in that deflexion increased pollen deposition, which in turn increased seed number. However, lower styles also increased self-pollen deposition. In contrast, higher deflexion and greater variability of that deflexion increased variation in pollen deposition, which resulted in heavier seeds. Conclusions Variability of style deflexion and therefore stigma placement, independent from the mean, appears to be a property of individual P. incarnata plants. The mean and variability of style deflexion in P. incarnata affected seed number and seed weight in contrasting ways, through the quantity and potentially quality of pollen deposition. This antagonistic selection via different fitness components may maintain diverse style phenotypes.  相似文献

In this study we investigated Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. inflorescence development by characterizing morphological changes at the shoot apex during the transition to flowering. Sixteen-hour photoperiods were used to synchronously induce flowering in vegetative plants grown for 30 d in non-inductive 8-h photoperiods. During the first inductive cycle, the shoot apical meristem ceased producing leaf primordia and began to produce flower primordia. The differentiation of paraclades (axillary flowering shoots), however, did not occur until after the initiation of multiple flower primordia from the shoot apical meristem. Paraclades were produced by the basipetal activation of buds from the axils of leaf primordia which had been initiated prior to photoperiodic induction. Concurrent with the activation of paraclades was the partial suppression of paraclade-associated leaf primordia, which became bract leaves. The suppression of bract-leaf primordia and the abrupt initiation of flower primordia during the first inductive photoperiod is indicative of a single phase change during the transition to flowering in photoperiodically induced Arabidopsis. Morphogenetic changes characteristic of the transition to flowering in plants grown continuously in 16-h photoperiods were qualitatively equivalent to the changes observed in plants which were photoperiodically induced after 30 d. These results suggest that Arabidopsis has only two phases of development, a vegetative phase and a reproductive phase; and that the production of flower primordia, the differentiation of paraclades from the axils of pre-existing leaf primordia and the elongation of internodes all occur during the reproductive phase.  相似文献

Two new species of Schizostachyum Nees (Poaceae: Bambusoideae): S. yalyense N. H. Xia, V. T. Tran et H. N. Nguyen and Schizostachyum ninhthuanense N. H. Xia, V. T. Tran et H. N. Nguyen (Poaceae: Bambusoideae) are described and illustrated from Vietnam. Schizostachyum yalyense is similar to S. lima (Blanco) Merrill, but differs by culm sheaths with a concave apex 4–5 cm wide and 1.0–1.5 cm deep, pseudospikelets clustered on the wholly leafless flowering branches, possession of 2 bracts and lodicules. Schizostachyum ninhthuanense is related to S. hainanense Merrill ex McClure, but differs by culm sheaths covered with white hairs and having white–brown hairs at the apex, ligule margin densely pale‐ciliate, pseudospikelets clustered on wholly leafless flowering branches, presence of 3 lodicules, two stigmas apically on the style and the third stigma branching off from one of the two other stigmas.  相似文献

Abscisic acid (ABA) was applied in a concentration of 1. 10?3 M and 1. 10?4 M to the quantitative SD plantChenopodium rubrum under various light regimes. ABA did not influence flowering in plants under continuous illumination, enhanced flowering in plants subjected to long days and inhibited it in plants induced by short days. It was concluded that ABA can not substitute for inductive treatment but its action may be additive to initial stages of reproductive morphogenesis (enhanced growth rate and branching of the apical meristem) as evoked by long days.  相似文献

Delayed outcrossed pollination of female spinach plants (Spinacea oleracea L.) resulted in increased stigma length and a male-biased progeny sex ratio. One group of females was outcrossed 10–14 d after anthesis, a second group was never outcrossed, and a third group, the control, consisted of females that were outcrossed as soon as stigmas appeared. Stigma length was significantly greater for plants in the delayed and never outcrossed groups compared to the control. Furthermore, stigmas of virgin flowers grew until they were either pollinated or the plants produced anthers. Plants that were never outcrossed produced their own anthers and self pollinated. The resulting progeny were all female. The sons of the delayed outcrossed group produced more stamens, on average, than sons of the control group. The observed male-biased sex ratio among the progeny of delayed outcrossed plants could be due to gametic selection. To test for this, plants were held virgin until their stigmas reached a length of at least 3 mm. These stigmas were then pollinated either distally or proximally. No significant difference was found between the progeny sex ratios of these two treatments. However, both sex ratios were more male biased than progeny of plants pollinated the day of anthesis (control group of the first experiment). We conclude that maternal factors, rather than gametophytic selection, may be responsible for the male-biased sex ratio observed in the first experiment.  相似文献
