Abstract. Mosquitoes were collected on human bait over a 16-month period (September 1988 to December 1989) in an urban and a rural area of Kinshasa, Zaïre. P.falciparum malaria sporozoite rates were determined by ELISA. In the urban area Culex quinquefasciatus accounts for 96% of the 121 bites/ person/night (b/p/n). The only anopheline is Anopheles gambiae, sensu stricto, with an average of 5.1 b/p/n and a sporozoite rate of 1.86%. The entomological inoculation rate (EIR) averages 0.08 infective b/p/n. Malaria transmission is almost interrupted at the end of the dry season. In the rural area mosquito nuisance is small (20b/p/n), almost entirely due to six species of Anopheles including four vectors of malaria: An.gambiae (13.3 b/p/n), An.funestus (2.4b/p/n), An.nili (0.4b/p/n) and An.brunnipes (0.7b/p/n) with mean sporozoite rates of 7.85%, 6.60%, 6.63% and 0.53% respectively. An.paludis (0.4b/p/n) and An.hancocki (0.2b/p/n) were not found infective. Malaria transmission is intense and perennial: the overall EIR varies monthly between 0.60 and 3.29 infective b/p/n. The specific contributions of An.gambiae, An.funestus and An.nili average 1.07, 0.14 and 0.03 infective b/p/n respectively. Malaria transmission peaks during the rainy season in both study areas. The daily mean survival rates for An.gambiae were 0.91 and 0.78 in the rural and urban area, respectively. All An.gambiae examined belonged to the forest cytotype (Coluzzi et al., 1979). Through its effect on the sporozoite rate, the higher vector survival rate in the rural environment appears to be the major determinant of the greater malaria transmission rate in the rural area as compared to urban Kinshasa. 相似文献

1. Anopheles arabiensis Patton and An. funestus Giles were identified as vectors of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in the Mwea-Tebere irrigation scheme, Kenya. An. arabiensis was the only member of the An. gambiae complex identified from chromosome characteristics. Other Anopheles species found included An. pharoensis Theobald, An. rufipes Gough and An. coustani Laveran. Survival rates per gonotrophic cycle for An. arabiensis averaged 0.37 during the short rains (October-November), 0.49 during the dry season (February) and 0.78 during the long rains (May-June). Vectorial capacities were correspondingly low due to low survival rates and a high degree of zoophily. The average duration of infective life for P. falciparum was 0.2 days for both An. arabiensis and An. funestus. In contrast, entomological inoculation rates were comparatively high: 6-8 infective bites/man/month. An. pharoensis averaged 110 bites/man/night during the short rains; 1/999 (0.1%) was positive by ELISA for P. falciparum circumsporozoite antigen, but the ELISA evidence is not conclusive for vector incrimination. In correspondence with clinical observations, the transmission of P. malariae and P. ovale is unlikely due to the low vector survival rates. The observed anomaly between low vectorial capacities and high entomological inoculation rates demonstrates the importance of accurately estimating vector sporozoite rates to monitor unstable malaria transmission in irrigated areas. 相似文献

Abstract. Anopheline mosquito populations were studied during 1992 in seven villages south of Bagamoyo, coastal Tanzania, prior to malaria control intervention using insecticide treated bednets. To collect mosquitoes, CDC light traps were used in ten houses per village fortnightly for 12 months. Anopheles females were identified and checked by ELISA for the presence of malaria sporozoite antigen and source of bloodmeal. An. funestus peaked in June-July after the long rains. Three members of the An. gambiae complex had different seasonality: An. arabiensis, An. gambiae and small numbers of An. merus were collected.
In most villages transmission was extremely high and perennial with the entomological inoculation rate reaching three to eleven infective bites per person per night in July and persisting at around 0.1 and 1 for most of the remainder of the year. Sporozoite infection rates within the An. gambiae complex ranged from 2% to 25%, with the peaks in January and July following the two rainy periods. An. funestus showed a similar pattern. 1. Three sibling species of mosquitoes of the Anopheles gambiae complex are found in the Senegal River Basin: An. melas Theobald, An. gambiae Giles and An. arabiensis Patton. 2. An. melas is restricted to the river delta and environs where saltwater breeding places are present. 3. An. gambiae and An. arabiensis are sympatric in the study area; An. arabiensis predominates in coastal zones where it breeds also during the dry season; An. gambiae predominates in inland areas where breeding is mostly restricted to the rainy season (July-September). 4. An. arabiensis is chromosomally polymorphic all over the study area, with much variation of inversion frequencies, particularly for the 2Ra arrangement. 5. Transmission characteristics of malaria were studied in Matola, a coastal suburb of Maputo, the capital City, in southern Mozambique, from November 1994 to April 1996. The local climate alternates between cool dry season (May-October) and hot rainy season (November-April) with mean annual rainfall 650-850 mm. Saltmarsh and freshwater pools provide mosquito breeding sites in Matola. Malaria prevalence reached approximately 60% among people living nearest to the main breeding sites of the vectors. Plasmodium falciparum caused 97% of malaria cases, others being P. malariae and P. ovale. Potential malaria vector mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) collected at Matola during daytime indoor-resting (n = 1021) and on human bait at night (n = 5893) comprised 12% Anopheles coustani Laveran (93% biting outdoors), 46% An. funestus Giles (68% biting indoors) and 42% An. gambiae Giles sensu lato (60% biting outdoors). All 215 specimens of An. gambiae s.l. identified genetically were An. arabiensis Patton. Anopheles funestus populations remained stable throughout the year, whereas densities of the An. gambiae complex fluctuated considerably, with An. arabiensis peaking during the rainy season. No concomitant rise in malaria incidence was observed. Human landing indices of An. funestus and An. arabiensis averaged 1.8 and 3.8 per man-night, respectively. Overall Plasmodium sporozoite rates were 2.42+/-1.24% in 2181 An. funestus and 1.11+/-1.25% in 1689 An. arabiensis dissected and examined microscopically. Mean daily survival rates were 0.79 for both vector species. Estimated infective bites/person/year were 15 An. funestus and 12 An. arabiensis. Biting rates were greatest at 2100-24.00 hours for An. funestus (68% endophagic) and 21.00-03.00 hours for An. arabiensis (40% endophagic). The entomological inoculation rate (EIR) declined sharply over very short distances (50% per 90m) away from breeding-sites of the vectors. Consequently, P. falciparum prevalence among Matola residents was halved 350 m within the town. Implications for the protective effectiveness of a 'cordon sanitaire' by residual house-spraying and/or the use of insecticide-treated bednets are discussed. 相似文献

The macroinvertebrate species and assemblages of headwater streams of the River Tyne catchment in northern England were classified and their relationship with environmental variables based on stream structure, water acidity, distance from source and land cover investigated using constrained ordination and logistic regression. Fuzzy classification of data from 322 stream sites generated five assemblages. Stream structure, quantified as an exposure index, was found to be the most important environmental variable, with water acidity also important. Distance from source and land cover had less influence on species and assemblage distribution. A considerable amount of variation in assemblage distribution was explained using a two-variable logistic regression with stream structure (exposure index) and water acidity (pH) in a template. Site structure and water acidity appeared to be related to drift, geology and topography with little anthropogenic influence. The applicability of the habitat template concept for explaining the distribution of stream macroinvertebrates is discussed. 相似文献

Irregular peaks of P.falciparum malaria incidence were monitored in Suriname during 1982-86. An attempt is made to correlate these fluctuations of malaria rates with rainfall and river level in relation to the periodic availability of breeding habitats for the malaria vector Anopheles darlingi Root. Densities of adult female An.darlingi were recorded in the Upper-Marowijne region of Suriname, in a focus of malaria along the Marowijne River. Peaks in biting densities correlated well with periods of (i) high water level in the long rainy season, (ii) low water level in the long dry season, and (iii) abundant rainfall in the short rainy season. Critical levels of river-height and rainfall were defined which could explain most of the monthly fluctuations in malaria parasite incidence observed in this area. 相似文献

The ordination of benthic invertebrate communities in the South Platte River Basin in relation to environmental factors 总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3
1. Spatial patterns of benthic-invertebrate communities were examined in the 62 900 km2 South Platte River Basin in Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming, U.S.A., to determine major environmental factors associated with invertebrate distribution. Stable substrates were sampled semiquantitalively for invertebrates from 27 July to 7 August 1992, at twenty-one sites. Data on physical and chemical variables were collected concurrently at each site. 2. Four site groups were identified using derrended correspondence analysis (DCA), one in the mountains and three in the plains (braided channels, tributaries near the confluence with the main stem, and sites affected by effluent from wastewater-treatment plants). DCA axis 1 separated sites into the two major ecoregions (Southern Rocky Mountains and Western High Plains), and regression of DCA axis 1 with environmental variables indicated significant relationships primarily with slope, water temperature, specific conductance, and concentrations of organic nitrogen + ammonia and total phosphorus in surface water. Regression of DCA axis 2 with environmental variables indicated significant relationships with channel width and concentrations of nitrate + nitrite in surface water. 3. Invertebrate community composition and structure varied between ecoregions with greater number of taxa and number of insect families in mountain streams than in plains streams. Within an ecoregion, land use affected the invertebrate community. 4. Factors affecting invertebrate community distribution in stream ecosystems are scale dependent. 相似文献

There is increasing consensus that the global climate will continue to warm over the next century. The biodiversity-rich Amazon forest is a region of growing concern because many global climate model (GCM) scenarios of climate change forecast reduced precipitation and, in some cases, coupled vegetation models predict dieback of the forest. To date, fires have generally been spatially co-located with road networks and associated human land use because almost all fires in this region are anthropogenic in origin. Climate change, if severe enough, could alter this situation, potentially changing the fire regime to one of increased fire frequency and severity for vast portions of the Amazon forest. High moisture contents and dense canopies have historically made Amazonian forests extremely resistant to fire spread. Climate will affect the fire situation in the Amazon directly, through changes in temperature and precipitation, and indirectly, through climate-forced changes in vegetation composition and structure. The frequency of drought will be a prime determinant of both how often forest fires occur and how extensive they become. Fire risk management needs to take into account landscape configuration, land cover types and forest disturbance history as well as climate and weather. Maintaining large blocks of unsettled forest is critical for managing landscape level fire in the Amazon. The Amazon has resisted previous climate changes and should adapt to future climates as well if landscapes can be managed to maintain natural fire regimes in the majority of forest remnants. 相似文献

Changes in flow management to restore ecosystem health have been proposed as part of many restoration projects for regulated
rivers. However, uncertainty exists about how the biota will respond to flow management changes. The objectives of this study
were to estimate the relative importance of key abiotic predictor variables to aquatic macroinvertebrate drift densities in
the Missouri River and to compare these results among reaches of the river. A multi-year, multi-location database of spring
macroinvertebrate drift net sampling was used to develop relations between drift density and variables representing discharge,
temperature, and turbidity in the Missouri River from Fort Randall Dam, South Dakota to the mouth of the Little Nemaha River,
Nebraska. Multimodel inference using generalized linear mixed models and an information theoretic approach were used to estimate
the relative importance of the predictor variables and the parameters. The results varied by reach. Discharge-related factors
were more important at the upstream end of the study area, and turbidity was more important at the downstream end of the study
area. Water temperature or degree days were also important predictors in the upstream reaches. The results below Gavins Point
Dam suggest that increased macroinvertebrate drift densities are a response to reduced habitat and food availability. The
results identify important variables for drift density that could be used in future experimental studies of flow manipulation
for the Missouri or other large, regulated rivers.

The present study was carried out to investigate the impact of climate change on land suitability for agricultural development in a sub-basin of Karkheh River Basin, Iran. For this, land suitability of the sub-basin was evaluated twice; once regardless of the climate change impact, and again by involving the impact of climate change. Simple Limitation Approach was used to evaluate the suitability of the sub-basin for cultivation of winter wheat. According to the results, around 22.57% (124121.16 ha) of the study area is suitable for cropping while the capability of 39.29% (216086.13 ha) of the sub-basin was evaluated to be poor/moderate for this purpose. In this research, in order to investigate the impact of climate change on farmlands, the changing trend of the four variables of maximum and minimum temperature, precipitation, and radiation were stimulated by the year 2039 using downscaled interpolation of IPCM general circulation model under three emission scenarios of A1B, A2, and B1. The stimulation was done by LARS-WG Software. The overlaying was done once more, but this time using the stimulated values. Comparing the current and stimulated land suitability maps revealed the fact that, in the most pessimistic future under A1B scenario, approximately 15.51% (85288.95 ha) of the study area will lose its capability for farming as a result of an increase of 1.3?C in temperature, and a decrease of 20.43% mm in total precipitation. The research finding emphasizes the risk of climate change on land health for farming purposes. 相似文献

Direct impacts of human land use and indirect impacts of anthropogenic climate change may alter land cover and associated ecosystem function, affecting ecological goods and services. Considerable work has been done to identify long‐term global trends in vegetation greenness, which is associated with primary productivity, using remote sensing. Trend analysis of satellite observations is subject to error, and ecosystem change can be confused with interannual variability. However, the relative trends of land cover classes may hold clues about differential ecosystem response to environmental forcing. Our aim was to identify phenological variability and 10‐year trends for the major land cover classes in the Great Basin. This case study involved two steps: a regional, phenology‐based land cover classification and an identification of phenological variability and 10‐year trends stratified by land cover class. The analysis used a 10‐year time series of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer satellite data to assess regional scale land cover variability and identify change. The phenology‐based regional classification was more detailed and accurate than national or global products. Phenological variability over the 10‐year period was high, with substantial shifts in timing of start of season of up to 9 weeks. The mean long‐term trends of montane land cover classes were significantly different from valley land cover classes due to a poor response of montane shrubland and pinyon‐juniper woodland to the early 1990s drought. The differential response during the 1990s suggests that valley ecosystems may be more resilient and montane ecosystems more susceptible to prolonged drought. This type of regional‐scale land cover analysis is necessary to characterize current patterns of land cover phenology, distinguish between anthropogenically driven land cover change and interannual variability, and identify ecosystems potentially susceptible to regional and global change. 相似文献

Vegetation and land-use mosaics of shrub land, grassland, farmland and reforested land are characteristic for residential areas of the Wolong nature reserve in Sichuan province, southwest China. The patterns represent a stage in long-term human disturbance and natural secondary succession since deforestation. The aim of this paper was to elucidate the soil-land cover types, soil-slope position relationships on a typical disturbed slope in the humid mountainous region. Soils were taken from four typical land cover types (shrub land, grassland, farmland and reforested land) under four slope positions (upper slope, middle slope, lower slope, foot slope) to study the distribution of soil nutrients and moisture on the transect scales of the slope. To elucidate the influence of land-use and slope position on soil quality, two integrated quantitative indexes were developed to compare soil quality under different land-use types (QI) and under different slope positions (PI). The results showed shrub land had the highest QI value, while the QI of reforested land and farmland had lower values. Foot slopes and upper slopes had higher soil quality levels compared to middle slopes and lower slopes. The results indicated that on the slope scale shrub land had high soil quality levels. The results also suggested that in the area of China where the climate favors secondary succession, leave nature as it is is a better choice than the policy change farmland to forest land. 相似文献

Distribution of benthic algae in the upper Illinois River basin in relation to geology and land use 总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
- 1 Benthic‐algal distributions in the upper Illinois River basin, IL, U.S.A., were examined in relation to geology, land use, water chemistry and stream habitat using (detrended) (canonical) correspondence analysis, autecological metrics and indicator‐species analysis in order to identify the major environmental gradients influencing community variation.
- 2 Ionic composition and major nutrient [i.e. nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)] concentration of surface waters, salinity (Na‐Cl type), substratum type and physiognomic form of dominant species were primary factors contributing to variation in benthic‐algal assemblages of the basin. Basin geology was a significant contributing factor, but the explained variance associated with this factor was less than that related to land use.
- 3 Proportions of algal biomass consisting of cyanophytes, filamentous chlorophytes, halophilic diatoms and diatoms which utilize nitrogen heterotrophically were greater in eutrophic river segments than in less nutrient‐enriched segments. Composition of the benthic flora indicated meso‐eutrophic or eutrophic conditions throughout the basin; there were few diatoms indicative of hypertrophic waters. Shifts in diatom‐assemblage structure in response to nutrient loading provided an incomplete representation of the community‐response curve.
- 4 A weighted‐averages regression model based on total P and benthic‐algal abundances (all divisions included) yielded a highly significant correlation (r2 = 0.83) between species‐inferred [WA(tol)] and observed total P, with systematic bias (increased deviation of residuals) occurring only at concentrations greater than ~ 1.0 mg L?1 total P. This result indicates that total P regression and calibration models can be predictable for a river basin receiving excessive loadings of phosphorus.

土壤斥水性(SWR)阻碍入渗及再分布过程.虽然斥水土壤在世界广泛存在,但其产生机理并不明确.本文采用滴水穿透时间(WDPT)法、酒精摩尔浓度(MED)法和接触角(θ)法测定了新疆玛纳斯河流域典型土壤的SWR指标,其中θ的测定采用高度法和质量法.对WDPT是否受烘干及不同容重的影响进行对比,探讨各SWR指标之间的联系,并分析了SWR的关键理化性质影响因子,探讨土壤斥水的机理和原因.结果表明: 高容重土壤的WDPT值更大,烘干土壤的WDPT值比风干土壤大;3种SWR指标(WDPT、MED及θ)之间有一定的相关关系,但MED与θ的相关性并不明显,表明各SWR指标之间虽有一定联系,但表征方面具有差异性;采用高度法和质量法测量水与土壤的θ值时,高度法的θ值大于质量法,高度法之间重复差异小于质量法;使用正辛烷作为参比溶液测量水与土壤的θ值时,其重复的差异较小,低于无水乙醇;在多种理化性质中,黏粒含量比其他土壤属性更显著地影响WDPT和θ;[K+]、[Na+]均与θ呈正相关;蒙脱石含量与WDPT、MED呈负相关.综上,土壤SWR的测定方法中,WDPT法操作简单但易受影响;MED法缩短了入渗时间但试验过程耗时;接触角法操作复杂,结果相对精确,采用正辛烷作为参比溶液的高度法更可靠.建议采用多种指标综合表征土壤斥水性. 相似文献

Some coupled land-climate models predict a dieback of Amazon forest during the twenty-first century due to climate change, but human land use in the region has already reduced the forest cover. The causation behind land use is complex, and includes economic, institutional, political and demographic factors. Pre-eminent among these factors is road building, which facilitates human access to natural resources that beget forest fragmentation. While official government road projects have received considerable attention, unofficial road building by interest groups is expanding more rapidly, especially where official roads are being paved, yielding highly fragmented forest mosaics. Effective governance of natural resources in the Amazon requires a combination of state oversight and community participation in a 'hybrid' model of governance. The MAP Initiative in the southwestern Amazon provides an example of an innovative hybrid approach to environmental governance. It embodies a polycentric structure that includes government agencies, NGOs, universities and communities in a planning process that links scientific data to public deliberations in order to mitigate the effects of new infrastructure and climate change. 相似文献

利用长江源区1986、2000与2014年3期的遥感影像,结合实地野外考察获得该地区在这3个时间点的土地覆盖类型图。根据各时期之间的土地覆盖格局的变化确定土地类型之间的转移概率,进一步完成对该地区马尔科夫链模型的构建、检验与预测。结果表明:1986—2014年,长江源区的土地覆盖格局的变化特征符合马尔科夫过程,通过马尔科夫链模型能够对该地区的覆盖格局变化过程进行有效的模拟;长江源区的土地覆被退化趋势明显,湿地、中高覆盖草地等面积不断下降,裸地、沙地以及低覆盖草地等面积则一直在增加;2000年以后,由于三江源区自然保护区的建立以及降水量的增加等因素影响,长江源区的植被退化状况得到明显改善。 相似文献
